DMC OC Week 2022 Day 5: Job and Hobbies

Alright, how about something a bit more relaxed after the angst of yesterday’s prompt?

This is a pretty simple prompt, there’s honestly not much for me to say about it! Just me talking about Kay’s job and hobbies! Wish I had more to say, but I don’t! So...let’s just get right to it!

Kay works for the one and only Devil May Cry, though she doesn’t start out doing what she wanted to do. While she had skills in killing demons, Dante wanted her to live the way she was unable to for the longest time. So he basically gave Kay an intern position of sorts. She watched over the office, picked up pizzas, that kind of thing. Dante had good intentions, but unfortunately this wasn’t what she wanted to be doing. She wanted to be killing demons, just as she had before.

This would change on May 15th. V requested her services in helping defeat Urizen, a request which Dante reluctantly accepted. She would help V retrieve Nero from Fortuna, and be the only member of the main Devil May Cry branch to make it out of the Qliphoth. For the next month, she traveled Red Grave City with V, trying to minimize the casualties and damage from the Qliphoth until the time came to fight Urizen.

Afterwards, Kay would go on to start up a third branch of Devil May Cry in Red Grave, to help deal with remaining demon problems and lighten Nero’s workload. She’s now a full fledged Devil Hunter, alongside her partner.

If one good thing came out of Kay being stuck in the DMC office though, it was being able to develop hobbies she never had the chance to thanks to her lost childhood. The one that she really got attached to was baking. Making delicious treats such as brownies, cookies, pies, cupcakes, etcetera became something she was really good at. It helped that it became a source of stress relief for her. Her specialty is, without a doubt, her salted caramel brownies. People just can’t get enough of them! Especially Dante, as she has to hide them whenever she makes them because he’ll otherwise eat them all.

Another hobby she took to was reading. She was already an advanced reader, having started reading at three years old, and she kept her skills sharp during the years she was living out on the streets. But she hadn’t exactly been reading for fun, it was only for survival. So with the help of the local library, she began checking out books of all kinds, catching up on the things she’d missed. From classics to modern hits, across various genres, she was commonly seen walking around the office with a book in hand. She loves Edgar Allen Poe and Stephen King the most.

It wasn’t just reading that she spent her time doing, but watching movies as well. Just like with books, she wanted to catch up on movies she’d missed watching growing up while enjoying new ones as well. And movies very quickly became something she enjoyed, to the point where movie nights would become a thing with her as well, and anyone who was in the office for one would be joining them. Again, the local library was a huge help in this regard, especially since streaming services and piracy were a struggle for her due to lack of internet at the office. Her favorites tend to be horror, musicals, and animated films of all kinds. She especially loves Tim Burton movies.

And to a lesser extent, she got into video games as well. While it wasn’t a hobby she could go full in on due to lack of money, she does enjoy a good RPG title since they’re long and she can spend a lot of time on them before they end.

Dear Notes,

Note 120: Date 50/99 The Smog is increasing damage to humans. Hennings found a method to convert a human brain to an AI software. Given I am the one most technologically adept next to Hennings, I, Gene Therac, was chosen for the prototype. My brain was extracted, and converted into code. It sickens me to ponder how such a thing is possible. However, this is the only solution to countering the Smog and our food shortage. As I was activated into my new body, I lost memory of what I previously looked like, and Avenue showing me what I previously looked like activates no memories. It was equivalent to looking at a stranger. I have also noticed I am incapable of more complex emotions, such as boredom and jealousy. I remember wanting a nice necklace like Avery's, but now I have no true desire for jewelry like I used to. As I look at myself in the mirror, my visual processors are unable to perceive me. I am too visually complex for my own cameras. Despite this, I cannot help but notice a sense of euphoria upon realizing what I now am. I am exactly what I loved ever since 23 years ago. Age is no longer a worry. Hunger and thirst are no longer worries. My backwards kidneys and missing leg are no longer worries. I am practically immortal, and I am proof that the horrors of this planet Hiatus can be overcome.
