No Sleep 'Til Christmas (2018)
Tumblr media
I'm not sure what channel this originally aired on, but it's pretty good as far as TV movies go. Almost no cringe worthy moments, nothing overly dramatic or romantic, also nothing terribly stupid. Which begs the question (at least for me) why Christmas movies so seldom make it to theaters. Anyway...
Lizzie Hinnel (Odette Annable) is an event planner in Chicago who is planning a big, luxurious New Year's wedding to her fiancé Josh Wright (Charles Michael Davis) with his mother Mrs. Wright (Sheryl Lee Ralph). Mrs. Wright is pretty intense, so Lizzie attributes her inability to sleep to the pressure of planning the perfect wedding for her future mother-in-law. When my future mother-in-law put too much pressure on our wedding, my husband and I decided to elope, but I know everyone makes their own choices.
In another part of Chicago, bartender Billy Wilson (Dave Annable) is also having trouble sleeping, though he doesn't immediately attribute it to anything specific (that's a surprise tool that will help us later). His girlfriend Nicola (Brittany Bristow) breaks up with him because obviously he doesn't really love her if he can't even sleep next to her. Like, not the best reason to dump someone, but also not the worst.
Lizzie goes out driving at 3 a.m. with her sunglasses on. Billy is out jogging. Lizzie hits him with her car, or Billy runs into her car. Depends who you ask. Anyway, so Lizzie takes Billy to the hospital even though Billy insists that he's fine. They argue parked in the hospital parking lot, and then wake up to paramedics insisting they were unconscious. They part ways, but Lizzie gives Billy her contact info for insurance reasons.
It doesn't take long for Kristina (Stacey McGunnigle), Lizzie's best friend and business partner, to notice how much better Lizzie is functioning after getting some sleep. Andy (Alphonso McAuley), Billy's best friend, and Vivian (Tina Jung), Billy's coworker who is also a law student, also notice a change in Billy after a good night's sleep. When nothing else works, Lizzie proposes to Billy that they start sleeping together (just sleep) until Lizzie's wedding. Billy is unsure, so Lizzie offers to pay for Billy to open his own bar (his dream for years) in exchange for a sleeping companionship.
It works pretty well, until it doesn't. Some people know, but not everybody. Then, as they always do, things got more complicated. Especially between two main characters with daddy issues and insomnia. My only real disappointment in this film was that Kristina and Vivian did not flirt at all. Like, fine, they don't have to get together and live happily ever after, but like some banter would have been nice! Also a really cute thing about this movie that I didn't know until looking up the actors is that our main characters are married in real life.
In conclusion, this was overall pretty good in my opinion. I think the karaoke scene is my favorite part. Much to my husband's annoyance, I'm going to give this 4 stars.

Tony Cavalero and Matisyahu's Hanukkah Gift
Matisyahu ("Gift of God" in Hebrew), born Matthew Paul Miller, is  -- or was -- a Hasidic reggae artist (he has re-invented himself, and no longer identifies as Hasidic).  Tony Cavalero starred in the music video for his song "Miracle" (2011):
Tumblr media
At Hanukkah time, Matisyahu is skating with his kids, when Tony accidentally knocks him over! While unconscious, he dreams that he is bed with King Antiochus (Tony ), the evil Greek emperor who was defeated by the Maccabees. Afterwards there was only enough oil in the lamp to light the Temple for one night, but miraculously it stayed lit for eight days: thus we celebrate Hanukkah.
In bed, Antiochus invites Matisyahu to a party: "there's going to be babes, food, chocolate stuff."  He agrees to go, but then Mattityahu, the priests whose refusal to sacrifice to the Greek gods started the rebellion, convinces him to rebel instead (played by Alphonso McAuley.)
They skate through a forest of Christmas trees and rap:
You look so down, look so puzzled.
Huddle round your fire through all the rubble.
Bound to stumble and fall but my strength comes not from man at all
Tumblr media
Antiochus captures them and puts them in a cage in Santa Claus suits, guarded by a Nutcracker. They escape and fight through a hockey game.
No need to worry, no need to cry.
Light up your mind no longer be blind
Him who searches he'll find
Leave your problems behind
We will shine like a fire in the sky
What's the reason we're alive.
Finally Antiochus warms up to the idea of religious freedom, and they all hug and dance under a menorah.
No specifically gay content except men hugging and dancing together, but Matisyahu is a gay ally who performs for gay Orthodox Jewish audience.
The music video is on youtube.

I won’t say Girlboss is going to be Netflix’s next big hit, but it definitely does show that the network is dedicated to diverse depictions of [note]white[/note] women. (more…)
