A story that ends in blood
The world has always been unkind, and when you have turned to yourself for comfort you have come face to face with an empty pit which seems to be laughing. You don’t care if it kills you but once you find someone whom you love and who loves you back, you will make sure nothing happens to them. They are yours. You will make a tear in this world and create a new place for you and your love if it comes to that. Because it has always been about love, and it is how it always ends.

Daphne Hughes - Braverman Bay
Violent devotion
Everyone seems to think you are faithless, but the thing is you haven’t yet found someone who will bring you to your knees and make you raise your head in reverence. This world has stopped bringing you joy, you want more of the divine. You want to dedicate your entire existence to someone; you want to make them realise they are not something terrible, make them see just how much beauty they are bringing to this world. You want to be the only one for them, the only one they have chosen to love. There’s a god shaped pit inside of you and only they can fit in it. And what if they choose to walk away? Didn’t I say this was violent devotion?

A knife called grief
You have left your house, you have left those people behind, but what are you going to do about the memories which have taken root in you? You can run but not without them. You want someone to sit with you on this cool marble floor while the sun burns everything.You want them to cut your rotten heart and theirs too. You want to sit with it in front of you, let them see you with all your flaws, which haven’t been your fault but you have been made to believe so, and you want them to love you anyways. Because you know you’d do that for them.

Rhiannon Emroth - Shepherds of Haven
An undoing influence
Can someone tell you what to do? You have been carrying so much love within you for so long it is starting to turn into anger (why does it matter, all you see is red anyways) and you have been dragging this body through each day and every night you are split open on your bed and it is so so so lonely. If someone were to walk in while you were on your bed that way and they stitched you back in a new way, lining the seams with their love and kisses, you’d probably find this dreary world a little more bearable. You want someone to turn you over and over until you look in the mirror and see yourself looking back at yourself with a gentleness which has been lacking in you since forever.

Consumption of a heart unloved
Here's a dining table, here’s a set of plates. here's your heart, red and bursting with love. you have tried to love people all your life, but no one seems to understand you. your own mother perhaps forgot to teach you how to protect yourself, maybe people whom you trusted chose to look the other way when all you wanted was a hand full of love. all you want is someone to take from you, all you want is someone to dig in your heart and eat it and kiss you afterwards - bloody and red. you want them to tell you that you are what they have been looking for, you want to be the one who ends their hunger.

Summer Rose
Professor!Santiago Garcia x female OC Co-written with @julesonrecord
Rating: E for Explicit 18+ Word Count: 6k Warnings: OC is named (Daphne Antonelli) but has minimal physical description. Age gap 10+ years. Both parties are consenting adults. Alcohol consumption, mutual pining, professor/student, oral sex (f and m receiving), 69, sexy mythology references, vaginal sex, protected sex, fingernails/scratching, a bit of biting. Summary: Daphne is having an absolutely terrible day and has missed office hours to turn in her final paper to Professor Garcia. When she turns up on his doorstep to turn in her assignment, the professor she's been crushing on for ages offers her a supportive ear -- and help relaxing. Notes: A little collaboration between myself and my beloved Jules featuring a character we've working on (Daphne) and today's wet daydream of college professor!Santiago. Honestly this is just a bit of porn with the barest thread of a plot, and we're not sorry. Also, just a disclaimer that I have no clue how one finishes a masters degree, but it doesn't matter. We're here for the porn, not the threadbare plot.
Tumblr media
Twilight is beautiful on campus. Santiago has always thought so, even before he had the letters after his last name that demarcate him as faculty. He enjoys the blush of the sun fading, the purple of the dusky sky fading to blue-black, indigo, then glitter with starlight.
He likes walking home after class this way; a quiet moment to ease his mind after lectures and before grading. This late in the semester, it will be one of the last walks before the summer term. As he passes through the quiet neighborhood and climbs his front doors, he glances up, spies Orion's Belt in the heavens. He thinks about introducing the story next time he holds his Mythology and Myth-Making class. Did he include it this year? He can't remember. He'd been... distracted.
His phone pings with a text as he sets his messenger bag on the dining room table and undoes his cuff buttons, rolling them up. Too damn hot for this, damn dress code rules... He peers down at the message, and notes it's from an unknown number. His students know to text him if they have an emergency, so he opens it straight away.
Hi, Professor Garcia. I know that it's after office hours, but the fact is...I missed office hours altogether. Would it be an inconvenience to call you and explain? Otherwise I'm not sure how to get my final paper to you. Thanks, Daphne Antonelli (Mythology and Myth-Making)
Santiago lifts an eyebrow. He recognizes the name. Oh yes, he recognizes it. In fact, he's called it to mind more often than is probably appropriate, along with the image of a very beautiful graduate student with a focused stare and drop-dead gorgeous eyes. She was an attentive student, responsive, ready to answer questions but never one to hog the spotlight, making insightful, empathetic, and razor-sharp questions. It was unlike her to miss anything, never mind not visit office hours. They'd spent many such visits over the semester. Short. Professional. Of course.
So why does his heart rate increase, his teeth sink into his bottom lip as he thoughtfully taps the phone screen, spelling out a careful, professional text?
Hi Daphne. As this is your final paper, I would really like to have it ASAP as I am required to submit grades on Monday. Why don't you swing by my home to drop it off?
Feel free to call, he types, then deletes before sending. He wanted to hear her voice. He did need that paper. No reason why he couldn't do both in person. No reason at all.
He had had his graduate students over for a spring dinner after midterms so they know how and where to find him. The bonfire that night had lasted for ages, as tipsy grad students who were feeling feisty with a full meal in their bellies debated the cultural implications of different myth origins and the similarities of some creation myths that they had just been discussing in class. Daphne had been amongst the students that night, animatedly defending her points with unmatched ferocity that was impossible to ignore.
The text that comes through a few moments later takes a while for her to decide on, judging from the continuously undulating bubbles indicating how long she was typing compared to the brevity of the eventual message.
Thank you for understanding. I'll be over shortly so the rest of your night isn't interrupted.
Satisfaction. He tosses the phone down and leans over the table with a slow sigh, taking a look around the room. The same old familiar wall-to-wall bookshelves line the tidy bungalow. The same pendant lamps up, tacky, that he'd meant to change when he bought this place... four years ago. His degrees might be hung in his office upstairs, his clothes are here, he shaves here, but who does he have here, really? Nobody. Warm sheets for a night and then no one. Nothing. There was no reason to bother, really—
And then Daphne. Daphne with her slowly blossoming smile that melted from shy to beaming when he said hello to her on campus. Daphne with her neat notes in the margins, Daphne with the legs that had so often been tucked primly next to his as they leaned over a book or paper together, never touching but so close, close enough so that he could smell her perfume: cinnamon, orchid, incense.
"Fuck," he mutters to the table. There's no way of hiding from himself, not really. He pushes off the wood and stalks to the kitchen for a beer. He cracks it open efficiently and takes a long swallow, Adam's apple bobbing. He wants her. That much is clear. How could he not? She was intelligent, fierce, gorgeous. He could fool himself all he wanted, her coming here was a bad idea. It's been a long semester, keeping her close but not too close.
But, he realizes with a jolt, she's about to graduate. This is her final, his course is over. He is... well, technically by Monday, no longer her professor.
"Fuck," he mutters again, this time to a magnet of a catfish, his only catch from a weekend out fishing with the guys.
It's twenty minutes later precisely when his doorbell rings. There was no sound of a car outside on the street or dramatic slam of a door, but when he opens the door there is a bicycle leaning against his front gate and a frazzled looking student on his front step.
"Hi, Professor." Daphne stands on his step with a mix of anxiety and embarrassment on her face and she digs into her bag right away to pull out a manila folder with his class name and number written on it alongside her name. "I'm so sorry about this. I know it's technically late and that you'll have to dock points for that. It's completely my fault."
"Hey, hey, easy." He lifts a palm and lowers it soothingly, taking the manila folder gently. "There's no need to be sorry, accidents happen." Then, as he knew he would, he asked, "Would you like to come in? It's the end of semester, though. Maybe you have a party you'd rather get to?" He smiles fondly, bumping his shoulder against the doorframe and folding his arms to show off his tanned forearms, shirt sleeves straining slightly.
Yeah, he's still got moves. And he wants to show them off. To Daphne. Who is no longer his student. Who's staring up at him with the anguish slowly sliding from her face. He wants to remove it, stroke her stress away with his thumb, ease it out of her slowly—
Fuck, he's screwed.
"I'm not really – I mean, I haven't –" She doesn't get invited to parties, is what she's trying to say. Not that she doesn't enjoy parties, because she does. She absolutely does. The night they spent here at his house just sitting around the fire talking and sharing a meal was one of her favorite graduate school memories. But she isn't great at socializing with the other students in her program, she's found. There is something a little odd about Daphne, and it has reverberated through her life to keep her just a little on the outside of normal.
Maybe that's why she nods, accepting the invitation with swallowed thanks, and steps inside her professor's house. Her professor who has more than a decade on her in terms of age but has never held his years of experience or knowledge over her head. If they were colleagues, she might have even considered him a friend. As it is, being his student, she's stuck in a sort of limbo with a useless crush and fond memories. "I've had kind of a crazy day," she admits sheepishly. "Even if I had been invited to any of the parties on campus, I don't think I would be going."
"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that, Daph," he says, with real sympathy. "Is everything all right? I just opened a beer, would you like anything?"
"A pipe burst at my place and my landlord is claiming I'm liable, then my computer crashed in the middle of doing one last edit on your term paper and the tech office gave me grief, it's just...it's been a long day." She barely even nodded in agreement that a drink would be a huge relief, but he is immediately retreating to his refrigerator to grab her a beer. "Oh, and my summer plans fell through today." Her shoulders sag, the stress of the day dragging her down and determined to keep her there. "I'm just lucky I got up to take a shower first thing this morning or else the day would've been even worse."
"Oh, Daph, that's a rotten one," he says, placing the opened beer on the coffee table and settling his hands on her shoulders. "What happened to your summer? Surely you're going off to some incredible internship, you're more than qualified." And she is. He'd have recommended her to any program she wanted, and had, in fact, written her a letter of recommendation earlier in the year. "You know I'm not going to dock points, right?" he asks more quietly. "None of today was your fault, sweetheart."
Sweetheart. That shouldn't burrow into her chest and bloom into warmth like it does, and Daphne's eyes drop to the floor immediately to carefully focus on the toes of her boots instead of looking him in the face. That's your professor. Don't be creepy. "I had that internship lined up in London with the publishing company but they pulled the rug out from under me." She shrugs, feeling more vulnerable in the moment than she wants to admit. "Apparently the CFO's kid decided all of a sudden that he wants to be an author, so they rescinded my offer. He's going to get it instead."
His chest pangs. He hates that there is nothing he can do to fix this for her -- because she's right. That's the cherry on top of an extremely long day, and all he can do then is what feels most natural, which is to lift her chin up with the crook of his finger, his voice soft, gentle. "Hey."
When she meets his gaze, he watches them flicker slightly, scanning his face as he drinks in hers. Her eyes are so pretty. Like fresh honey dripped from a spoon.
"I'm sorry, sweetheart," he says again, and means it. "You deserve that spot, but you'll find something better, okay? Hey, look at me." She had turned away slightly, embarrassed or perhaps made shy by his praise, but her eyes fix on him again, golden and fringed with thick lashes. "I promise, you will. There's lots of ways into this world, and you're too talented not to break in. Okay? You want to sit down, tell me about it?" His fingers clasp around her delicate elbow, ready to guide her to the couch.
"There's not a lot more to tell, to be honest." Two people with two beers steer almost mechanically toward the couch, and Daphne finds herself being seated on his plush leather sectional just before he sits down beside her. This spring has been chilly and he still has a throw blanket out, which he pulls close to them as if to have it at the ready. "No summer in London means I'm going to have to either go back home and figure out my next step there, or find a new place here and do the same. Because I'm sure as hell not staying in the place I'm in now. As if the landlord weren't bad enough, now the plumbing is going."
"Huh." He trails his arm over the back of the sofa, sipping his beer thoughtfully. "What kinda guy is this-" Asshole, he wants to say, but quells it, "Fellow? Any chance he'll back off? Perhaps once he... calms down, he can be reasoned with." He's approaching the boundary of reason himself. He can see it, taste it, the drip of something sweet down his throat. "Beautiful woman like you? You could convince a man of anything."
The pffft sound that comes out of her mouth goes with a wave of her hand, but she does accept a sip of the beer that he's brought her with a grateful sigh. "The apartment is a piece of shit anyway, if I'm honest. I hate it there. It's just that it's affordable." There's a moment's pause where Daphne's eyes widen in panic and she deflates again with a groan. "I already put in my notice at my job, oh my god."
"Hey, hey, Daphne." He puts his beer down and reaches for her, wrapping one arm around her waist, cupping her flushed cheek with the other hand. "C'mon, it's going to be okay, I promise, but for right now, I need you to relax, okay? Can you do that for me, bebita?" They're so close now, almost nose to nose. He's lost in her eyes again, but he can feel the burning heat of her little cheek in his palm.
She had been so sure she was going to start crying instantly with that realization, but two searing hot hands on her skin steady her. His touch is grounding, pulling her away from the edge of panic and drawing her into his aura so effortlessly that she didn't even realize how close he was until she felt his breath on her skin. "O—okay—" He can't know that the thing keeping her from having a complete panic attack on his couch right now is the fact that all the blood in her body has rushed to her aching clit, but damned if it isn't working. Daphne nods vaguely, trying to keep her head from swimming, but all she feels is his hands on her and the way his coffee brown eyes have turned to oceans in front of her. "Okay," she repeats softly.
"Okay?" Santiago nods, his breath coming a little fast. "I'll help you. I'll help you relax, sweetheart. You tell me to stop any time, okay?" He leans closer so slowly, their breaths mingling. He can almost count her eyelashes. Her nose is sweet and soft as it brushes his, but it's nothing compared to her plush lips. They seal against his and he feels the world fall out from under him. Something deep and ravenous unlocks and spills out all over his inside. He barely chokes down a groan.
There is no doubt that this is the most surreal moment of Daphne's life, and it isn't as though she hasn't been in some weird situations before. It's a miracle that she managed to get her beer bottle onto the nearby coffee table without spilling or knocking anything over, but she needs her hands for this. For a year and a half she's been working on a master's degree and avoiding too much contact with the one professor who makes her mind fog up and her daydreams wander, until finally she had landed in his classroom.
And now on his couch.
Kissing him.
If it were anything besides the most surreal moment of her life, she might have jumped backward or at the very least, pulled away. But Daphne has imagined kissing Santiago Garcia far too many times to do anything but sigh in response and open up for him like a summer rose.
"It's okay," he repeats soothingly between kisses: to himself, to her, to the waiting tension in the room. "I've got you, cariño. I've got you now, there you go, so sweet for me. So pretty. Beautiful, smart girl." He deepens the kiss, tasting her lips slowly, reverently, one hand sliding slowly down her soft sweater to rest on her waist and squeeze gently. He brushes his thumb over the soft material and then flicks it open, wanting closeness, to drag his palm up her thin blouse, wide and slow across her back.
The sound that bubbles out of her is a plaintive moan, unsure but wanting, and one of her hands grasps for steadiness on his arm even as the other instinctively sinks into his curls to keep him close. The battle is want versus wisdom, and it takes longer than she's proud of for Daphne to drag her lips from his and pant for a breath that still has no prayer of clearing her head.
"But." The fog in her mind has settled thick and heavy like the arousal in her core, and even as she's trying to straighten herself out she's still clinging to him with digging fingers and sharp nails. "You'll get fired," she manages to breathe out a few seconds later. Her only real protest being that she doesn't want him to get in trouble over a whim – which is surely all this is to him.
"Baby, no, no," he shakes his head, almost laughing with relief that that is her only concern. "No, you're graduating. I'm not your teacher any more. You handed in your paper. We can finally do what I – what I've been—" Shit. This is going to sound so bad. "What I've been thinking about since I met you," he admits.
Santi leans his forehead against hers, sighing. "I'm sorry. It's so inappropriate, but it's true. I've been waiting so long to kiss you, baby girl. Let me kiss you." He brushes his fingers over her knee, lifting her skirt just a little. "Let me make you feel so good, my little nymph. Do you even know how long you've been haunting me?" His mouth brushes her again, gently, over the corner of her mouth, the edge of her jaw, the flutter of her pulse, which smells delicious, deep and floral, her scent.
His cock aches against his zipper.
"Fuck." This time Daphne groans, sinking further into the couch, and feels herself giggle softly in disbelief more than she's actually aware of making the sound herself. "You've been haunted?" She challenges, eyes burning with courage now that she's heard his confession. Heard him beg. Did he really just beg for her? "Do you know how long I put off taking your class because I didn't know if I could even concentrate around you?"
Using the opportunity of her gently reclining body, Santiago leans in for the catch. "I never could," he murmurs into the hollow of her throat, his hands sweeping her skirt up, revealing her pretty legs, and god her thighs, so plush and luscious in his hands. He takes a moment to stroke there, brush the hem of her panties with his thumbs. "Never. You came in with Eros and made me Apollo." One thumb slips gently under the gusset of her panties. "Are you running, little nymph, hm?"
"Fuck—I—no, I—I don't even think my legs work now," she huffs, all at once tense as a bowstring with desire and measurably more relaxed as the reality of the man she's wanted forever finally touching her exactly where she wants him.
Well, not exactly. But it's not going to take long to get there at the rate they're going.
"What should I..." Daphne's head falls back on the sofa cushion as his thumb strokes her slit and she moans. "Santiago is a lot of syllables to moan."
"Santi. You can call me Santi from now on," he murmurs, removing his thumb from her panties only to twist the thin white cotton things, Jesus, so fucking wet, around his fingers and slide them down, down. He tosses them to the side and shucks off her high heeled boots while he's there, his eyes locked on where she glistens for him, needs him. "But you can call out any god you want to, bonita." He flicks his gaze to hers and smirks. "Show me how much you were paying attention, yeah?"
If she can even remember a single name from his class at this point she'll be shocked, and the cool air of his house on her overheated cunt is enough to have her squirming instinctively underneath him. Her brain has pretty much given up the ghost already, overstimulated in the very best way possible far before the rest of her body feels the same. Although she has a feeling that it will get there. "Santi..." Trying it out, there is a sweetness on her tongue and heaviness in her core that really is just a whine waiting to break free. Daphne's hands have found their way to his shirt front, fumbling to free the buttons even while she's nearly shaking with desire. "If you get to touch me, I want to touch you, too."
His lips find hers again, almost impatient to taste her again. "You can touch me, I want you to," he mutters against her lips, lifting her blouse hem from her skirt as she takes care of his buttons. Santiago doesn't pause, doesn't make it easy for her or for himself, drowning himself in the touch of her, the sweet little noises emanating from her throat, the ones taking a running leap on the way to begging for everything he's ready to give. He lifts her shirt over her head and begins tugging down her skirt an inch at a time, his fingers dragging slowly over her hips, her now bare legs.
Nothing is exactly torn away, not specifically, but the pile of clothing that collects beside his living room sofa accumulates quickly and haphazardly — shirts and sweaters and everything else discarded blindly as they drown in kissing each other and swallowing those moans that make their way to the surface over and over again. With that building freedom Daphne finds a buried courage — not that she is a timid lover by any means, but there is an eagerness below the surface here that she hasn’t felt in so long. When the only thing left between them is the flimsy pair of boxers that do nothing to disguise how achingly hard he is, Daph bites down on his bottom lip to pull a groan out of him and soothes it away by sucking on the same spot as her fingers slip under the waistband of his last remaining piece of clothing.
"Fuck," he hisses, hips jumping forward so that the weeping tip of his cock brushes against her hand and he groans. He sits up straighter, caught in a web, aching to touch her – at least take his boxers off, fuck – but loathe to move away from her curious little hand. He settles for sitting up on his knees, staring at the place she's touching him, watching her explore him as though in a trance.
Taking advantage of the momentary shift, Daphne sits up along with him and nudges Santi backward so that he is on his back now instead of her. His curls are mussed and his eyes are so black with lust that he looks positively debauched before she’s even had a chance to touch him very much. Once he’s on his back, though, Daphne hooks her thumbs in his boxers and peels them away, groaning at the sight of him. Harder than diamonds and leaking precum like an eager teenager, a sly smirk rides across her face knowing she did that to him. “I want to suck your cock,” she admits, gaze flickering between his length and his blackened eyes. “You have no idea how many hours I’ve spent imagining sucking your cock under that desk in your office.”
Santiago closes his eyes a moment. Is he fucking dreaming? Or is his most fucked fantasy coming true before his eyes?
"Probably almost as many as what I've spent imagining what that wet little pussy tastes like." His voice is a low rasp, but he pulls himself together enough to halt her hand on his throbbing dick. His fingers squeeze around hers, gliding over the rigid shaft slowly, with control. His breath fans over her forehead. "You want this, baby? Hm? Gonna have to give me something in return. Come here," he urges, a low purr, her very own siren. "Come here and give me a little taste, cariño."
“Even Kama had to worship a lover in order to find his release,” Daph breathes, having spent an entire semester doodling images of the Hindu love god’s sugarcane bow and bird companions in her notes while thinking of all the various ways her professor could be worshipped.
"Kama was burnt alive by Shiva, sweetheart, and I don't plan on doing any different to you. Come here, that's it." Santi helps Daphne turn in his lap, both of them facing the wall. He guides her hips over his face as he lies back on the couch. Thank fuck it was big enough, for this and more, and then her perfect pussy is hovering over his face, tantalizing him. At heart? Santiago likes torturing himself, loves the thrill of giving into pleasure. Perhaps that too, is why he waited so long to take this girl into his bed. Perhaps that's why he's slow and sure as he spreads her lips, flattens his tongue, and tastes her indulgently, from clit to hole.
Daphne's momentary flash of composure is gone again as soon as he tastes her. Her legs shake on either side of his head, thighs pressed to his ears so her moans are muffled but it isn't on purpose. It's just been so long since she had a man between her legs who knew what the fuck he was doing that just having her clit noticed is a vast improvement. Daphne's body sags momentarily before she is shifting all her weight to one hand and wrapping the other around the base of his cock to stroke his base with the pressure that he showed her – the pressure he likes – while she takes as much of him as she can into her mouth.
When he moans it's with a growl into her pussy she can feel vibrate all the way up through her lungs.
She's not fucking sitting, and he knows it's because she's still, however minutely now that her moans are ringing sweet and clear across his living room, in her head instead of fully in her perfect body the way he wants. Licking up her slick almost lazily, he drags his nails lightly up the outsides of her thighs before firmly catching her hips in hand and pressing her into his waiting mouth, his evening stubble scraping across her folds. Only then does he give her a real reason to moan, encouraging her to grind while his laps at her clit with his tongue, filling his hands with all the gorgeous skin he can reach.
"Sit," he grunts, "Fuck, baby, I wanna to go to the field of fucking reeds with this pussy on my face, come on, you can do it, give it to me."
Come on, carińo, I know you can come for me, such a good fucking girl, he thinks, his brain a hazy lightning storm at the sensation of her hot throat squeezing around him as she swallows. Fuck, he could let her do this all night, but he's hungry for her pleasure and he's so close, he can taste it. Santiago lifts her hips with a final loud suck and trails a finger around her slit, teasing, almost pressing, but only just, his thumb running circles around her clit. With a deep breath he lifts his mouth, slips his tongue and a single finger inside, fucking into her with slow, measured movements.
The overwhelming pleasure of having more than just the tip of his tongue inside her pussy has Daphne moaning so earnestly that she pulls off of him cock with a lurid pop. "Dammit—I—fuck, I'm going to cum—Santi, baby, oh my f—" The shaking of her legs and the coil in her core twist down on each other so her thighs tighten and he breathes into her like he's going to devour her whole as she falls apart at the seams.
Oh yes. He really likes hearing her moaning that, but not more than the way she gives in as her orgasm rocks through her, grinding her hips down, into his waiting, eager mouth, helping her ride him through it until the aftershocks ease. His voice is barely a scrape when he lifts her up, his aching cock swinging between his legs as he presses forward, eager for her mouth. "Did so good, baby, such a good girl for me. I need to fuck you. Need to fuck you, baby. How do you want it?"
"Any way." Daphne gasps, trying to wrap her head around any kind of how that's more artful than just sinking down on him right here and now. When she does wrap her head around it, though, she groans in a less ethereal tone. "Let me grab a condom." Like any sensible, sexually active college girl, she carries one in her regular purse. Emergency cock wrap, if you will. She just never thought she'd actually need it.
"Wait, I got it." He scoots up a moment, digging into the small table beside the couch. From the drawer Santi draws out the foil pouch and rips it open, quickly rolling it on before turning his attention back on Daphne, who's watching him with drowned eyes, eyes deep and longing and still so lovely.
"Lie back, sweetheart. You ready for me?" He slowly glides the head over her silky wet folds, smearing her slick across his tip.
Deciding she absolutely does not need to know how many other girls have been fucked on this couch -- possibly at the end of their own courses -- Daph pushed herself up on her elbows to kiss him fiercely. Tonight is not to be wasted. Tonight is to be a fantastic memory. "I'm ready." Her nails drag down the base of his scalp, having caught a near purr from him earlier when she did the same. "I want you to fuck me, Santi."
Almost before his name is out of her mouth, he's pushing inside her with a low rumble, his head falling back slightly into her hands. Her nails scrape sensation over his scalp and down his spine, and her cunt is licking flames over him, so warm and perfect he almost comes right fucking there, but halts, breathing damp against her lips, his teeth nipping her lip possessively.
They hold like that, frozen together in the heat of the moment as he regains his composure and she adjusts to the stretch and fill and thickness of his cock inside her. The only movement, in this long moment of coming together, is the languid slide and tangle of their tongues together as they drown in the intimacy of feverish kisses.
Gradually, Santi comes down enough to get restless, eager again. He nips and bites down over her jaw and descends on her throat, sucking a mark low on her collarbone as his hands pay some long overdue attention to her pretty, heaving tits. Mine.
When the mark on her neck is soothed with his tongue, he sits up slowly, his eyes a glittering black, his lips parted. He looks like he's about to devour her. He takes one of her calves in his hand, eyes never leaving hers, tipping her knee up towards her head and then out, spread wide for him. He grips her ankle in a warm hand. Then, with a grunt, he's pulling back and pitching forward hard enough for their skin to clap obscenely, fast enough to make them both soon begin to tremble.
The position that he's in has him almost entirely out of her reach, just close even to graze her nails over his chest as he thrusts into her at a pace frantic enough to make them both pant and heave. Her back arches off the couch with a keen and her hands grapple with the couch cushions for purchase to hold on tight as Santi fucks her so deeply and insistently that she can practically feel him all the way up in her throat.
"Gripping me so fuckin' tight, baby, Jesus," he says through his teeth, his jaw tight, streaks of pleasure raking down his chest with her sharp, clinging nails. Keeping his relentless pace, he bends forward, pushing her thigh up, testing her limit. When he's low enough he seizes her mouth with his, grinding deep.
"One more for me, pretty girl, one more," he whispers huskily, his other hand skimming down her body to rub at her clit.
"Fuck, fuck, fuck, so good baby, oh my fucking god—" Something in Daphne's mind short circuits, and the rambling begins in earnest the higher and higher she climbs toward a second orgasm. Tripping over her own tongue and throwing her hands up over her head as he slams into her so hard that either they are moving up the length of the sofa or the entire sofa is moving, Daph is completely lost in her pleasure. That volcano of pleasure building in her core is damn near ready to explode and the only thing she wants more than to erupt is to take him with her.
The second her expression breaks and she cries out for him, he's gone. He thinks he's done even before she clamps down on his cock like a goddamned vice, ripping his orgasm from him in a half dozen hard but increasingly languid strokes.
His upper body grows heavy, and with a groan he grinds in deeply just once more – never mind why – and leans his forehead on her soft breast, pulling out of her with a sigh. His entire body is basking, floating. If she puts her hands in his hair again he might even fall asleep.
There's a moment of quiet as he ties off and disposes of the condom, and for a split-second Santi disappears around a corner but he comes back with a warm, damp kitchen cloth to clean them both up with before curling back around her on the couch. "Goddamn," she huffs, giggling softly to herself as his arms come around her.
"Tell me about it," he says sleepily, flipping the throw blanket over the two of them as they settle, kiss, explore lazily what before had been greedily consumed. "Still not sure I'm not dreaming," he says, only half-joking, tracing her lips with a smile. "Did I really get so lucky?"
"I'm not sure how you're the starstruck one out of the two of us," Daphne teases, even though it's through a thin veil of honesty.
"Bonita, I've been increasingly starstruck all semester," he chuckles. "You have so much to look forward to. Shit, you're definitely going farther places than I am. I'm just happy to be here," he presses a kiss to her left tit, "To enjoy-" to her right nipple- "The satisfaction of being right." He kisses her forehead and studies her, his lids heavy. "Do you need anything before you fall asleep, baby girl? You wanna sleep here or in bed? I can't let you bike home this late, querida, so don't even try. Besides, you can shower here, my plumbing is fine." He smirks here, as if anticipating the swat he's earned himself.
"It's not that late." Daphne wrinkles her nose at herself. The protest was just good manners. She doesn't actually want to leave. She wants to wrap up in him and breathe in this comfort for as long as humanly possible. When he levels her with a disapproving look, Daph just ends up grinning. "Let's go to bed," she suggests, catching his lips as he drags them along her jaw. "And when I wake you up in the morning with my lips wrapped around your cock again, you'll be glad your back isn't sore."
The laugh bursts out of his chest with delight, easy and real. "All right, baby, all right, and what makes you think I won't beat you to it?" Santi pulls her to her feet, wrapping the soft blanket securely around her shoulders before guiding her upstairs with a hand at the small of her back.
No matter which one of them beats the other two it, they both know they aren't done. Whether it's a weekend, a week, a month, or even more. This night is just the beginning.

Okay, so my idea for a new Scooby Doo show is actually based on a lot of older media. Just not the ones you’re expecting (i.e, Not Mystery Incorporated)
The gang have been solving Mysteries since they were kids. (Ex: A Pup Named Scooby Doo) At first, they were going out to stop supernatural monsters themselves in an attempt to figure out why Scooby Doo can talk, among other things. But over time, they’ve kind of grown comfortable in just stopping greedy rich guys from trying to keep land. Why does Scooby Doo talk? Because he can
They continued just that for several years (Ex: Pre-Scrappy Doo Era) until after their final year of High School when the gang took a bit of a break
Shaggy and Scooby-Doo were the first to leave. Albeit due to family reasons. As they had to find their Uncle Albert while saving the world from a mad scientist hellbent on becoming “IMOOOOOORTAAAAAAAL” (Ex: Shaggy And Scooby-Doo Get A Clue)
Daphne and Velma followed. Daphne wound up winning a contest for a summer trip to Honolulu and took Velma with her. The trip quickly went awry, however. As their plane wound up off course and had to land in the Himalayas. They were thankfully given a place to stay by a man named Vincent Van Ghoul. Unbeknownst to all of them, a young con artist named Flim Flam snuck in to find something to sell. Accidentally opening a chest that contained 13 powerful ghosts of dark intention. As technical ghost catchers themselves, Daphne and Velma volunteered to help. Alongside Flim Flam (who didn’t have a choice in the matter) and a dog owned by Vincent’s Butler (Ex: The 13 Ghosts Of Scooby-Doo. With some major differences)
With the rest of the gang on their own separate ways, Fred just kind of drove around America to see the sights. Before he wound up working at a small but beloved diner. Unaware of the mysteries he’d be helping solve in a little town called Riverdale. (Ex: Archie’s Weird Mysteries but with more Fred. I know that’s not a Scooby-Doo Show but I can dream)
After their summer ended, the gang got back together to start their mystery business full time. Only this time with a new addition: Flim Flam. With no parents of his own, Daphne and Velma took him in.
Now even more determined than ever after finding out the Supernatural is real, (Except Shaggy and Scooby. Who ironically faced up against the most extreme you can take “Greedy Man”) Their first call brought them to a small island mansion somewhere in Louisiana. But things quickly took a turn when they discovered it was just a trap for them to get sacrificed. (Ex: Scooby-Doo On Zombie Island) Made even worse is that they were introduced to someone else they hadn’t seen on the island yet. A man who called himself Dr. Phineas Phibes. The same mad scientist who Shaggy and Scooby chased down. The man with one goal: To destroy them
This sets up the stage for our show. There are three kinds of plots here.
Stop the guy in the mask. (Think Be Cool, Scooby-Doo with how it formats it’s mysteries
Oh god, It’s a real ghost, Gang! (A soft reboot of the 90’s Direct-To-Video series)
Dr. Phibes Strikes Back. (The same plot as Shaggy And Scooby-Doo Get A Clue but with the rest of the gang. Uncle Albert also assists from his mansion)

☕️ WNSD
🎶 We're coming after you, We're gonna solve that mysteryyyyy 🎶
No okay but I loooovvvveeeeee What's New so much oh my god. It's probably the iteration of Scooby I've seen the highest percentage of episodes of (excluding SDMI) and if I had to pick my favorite Scooby series of them all. More than any of the others really (although a little WAY), What's New was the Scooby of my childhood, and so many of its episodes are just total classics for me as well.
I think WNSD is very beloved by the Scooby collective (and for good reason) but honestly STILL is underrated in my mind, especially the early episodes. I absolutely adore some of the little "plot twists" of the WNSD era and how creative it could be within the confines of "the Scooby formula". I mentioned many of these in another post recently but having unexpected solutions/elements like "the monkey did it!" or "we caught the wrong guy! We need to go back!" every few episodes just blew my brain wide open as a child (especially the second one there. I'm STILL in shock on that one) and are underappreciated by scooby fandom. (Despite WNSD winning the favorite scooby series poll I did lol)
Being my favorite doesn't mean that What's New is perfect though. There are still some moments I don't like, or that, while useful for a joke, fall flat for me character-wise. One example I think I've talked about before is the scene where they split up differently and Fred is left alone searching for clues with Shaggy. The punchline of this is the idea that Fred and Shaggy just don't have anything in common to talk about, going along in awkward silence until Fred asks Shaggy if he 'saw the game last night' to which he says no and they continue on in awkward silence. For me, that's not my favorite joke because I do believe that Fred and Shaggy are good friends and DO have lots to talk about, and while not my favorite interaction between the two, I can still mesh it pretty easily into my own personal canon with a few simple Watsonian explanations. Ex: They were both overthinking it and didn't know what to say, Fred grabbed a conversation starter from his go to list (he's been working very hard on his social interaction skills, okay?! Only 3/4 of them are about nets/mysteries/the gang/the Mystery Machine!) and struck out big time.
No but as I was saying as much as I adore WNSD, nothing is perfect, and at times (especially in some movies) What's New also suffers from the WAY/TSDS cultural................. awkwardness that comes from the "white guy dressing up as native/cultural legend" plot line.
OH AND THE SOUNDTRACK. What's New rightly gets its due (lol) for having an absolutely killer theme song (and sequence too!!!!) but I think it should get extra points on top of that as well for the chase music in each episode. What's New easily has some of my favorite chase music (leading to some favorite chase sequences) which makes watching it an even better time (some of those songs are catchy!!!!!) And I just love the way it handles music in general. What's New really just finds creative ways to explore and make interesting all aspects of the process, and move between them subtly and infrequently enough that it doesn't feel forced or thrown at you, but as a genuine exploration of what can be done with Scooby by people who care about it. (And while we're talking about music?!?!?!?! THE HAUNTED MYSTERY MACHINE EPISODE???????? 🤯😵🥰💘)
To me, What's New is just a really good show that is kind of seen as being "simple" (plan lol. Sorry I keep doing that but I can't help myself) or basic but really is much more creative and complicated than it looks when closely examined. It's a series that I think gets a lot of love while at the same time still not getting enough for everything it accomplished. Also it has some of my favorite Scooby castings out there. I mean, COME ON! Casey Kasem Shaggy at the same time as Grey Griffin Daphne? With Frank Welker Fred AND Scooby along with MINDY COHN (<3333333333333333333) Velma? Don't get me STARTED.
Anyways I just have SO much love for this series all the time. All the time. 24/7. Hope that answers your question on how I feel about it

Wednesday Wisdom: Book Selection of the Week!
Tumblr media
Are you thinking about what to read after this one? With all the recently published books, WhatsOn has brought this week's book selection. Bring out your inner bookworm and spend the entire day reading. With fantasy or historical fiction, books can awaken even the most dormant imaginations, melt. Even the hardiest hearts with a steamy romance novel, or allow us to experience life from someone else's perspective through nonfiction . Books also offer an escape when the real world feels too stressful or frightening. 1. Nineteen Eighty-Four, by George Orwell Although dismal, Nineteen Eighty-Four is a vital book to read. Published in 1949, it’s the author’s depiction of a dystopian future. And that is characterized by authoritarian state monitoring, mind control, and eternal conflict. The main character of the book is Winston, whose job is to edit old news to fit the party line. We follow Winston as he plots to overthrow the government he works for. Its iconic first line, "It was a bright frigid day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen," establishes the unpleasant mood for the remainder of this unnerving book. Without you realizing it, you probably already employ words from this popular book; examples include "Big Brother" and "Room 101." As you read "1984," think about these concerns. 2. His Dark Materials, a trilogy by Philip Pullman Three books make up Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials: Northern Lights (also known as The Golden Compass in the US). The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass. The story takes place in a fantasy world with many parallel universes. And some of which resemble Oxford in the real world. The main character, Lyra, lives in a world where humans are followed by creatures called daemons. who represent their souls in animal form. Lyra attends the fictional Jordan College in Oxford. You will be drawn in straight away by the interesting parallels. And early disparities between Lyra's universe and reality. And where you will undoubtedly be riveted as you travel with Lyra. As she reaches adulthood and learns that space and time are not what she had anticipated. 3. Great Expectations, by Charles Dickens Another coming-of-age tale, and probably the best one ever told, is presented here. Give Charles Dickens another try if you find him or if studying him in school turned you off of him. Like all of his books, Great Expectations is humorous and has a colorful cast of characters with creative names. It narrates the story of Pip, an orphan from a low-income upbringing. He discovers a lesson in life after finding personal fortune. That is to be an unpleasant experience that causes him to turn for the worst. The only people he has ever loved. Along the journey, he encounters the mysterious Miss Havisham. She is an elderly woman who has been left at the altar while her entire body has frozen. 4. Rebecca, by Daphne du Maurier Even if you don't often enjoy the Gothic, Rebecca will keep you riveted. After becoming married to Maxim de Winter, the proprietor of Manderley, the story's unnamed narrator describes her terrifying experiences there. The scary Mrs. Danvers, the housekeeper, is keen to demonstrate to Maxim's new bride. That she is not a replacement for her beloved Rebecca. She drowned the year before, Manderley shows to be plagued by memories of Maxim's former wife. We watch as the second Mrs. de Winter tries to blend in at Manderley. And learns the truth about Rebecca's true identity and what actually transpired to her. You will be tormented by its opening lines, just as millions of readers have been. Read the full article

ok, let’s try this again
re-starting bridgerton season 2, now with a new mindset after a week trying to accept the fact that they completely changed everything about my favourite book of the series
(part 1 - ep. 1)
spoilers ahead (if they’re even still spoilers after a week)
i was watching while keeping the book in mind (bc, yknow, this was supposed to be an adaptation), but instead of this helping me understand the characters and what was going on in their heads better, it made me kind of assign them with thoughts and feelings they weren’t thinking and feeling (at least yet). the show seems to be a lot more slowburn than the book, not to mention the incredibly annoying love triangle plot they decided to shove in
i had to go after a lot of spoilers, which is usually not how i prefer to consume media, but i needed something to replace what i knew from the book with. it absolutely sucks when an adaptation would be best-enjoyed if you’d never read the source material, but, as a marvel comics fan and someone whose favourite book series is the princess diaries, i guess i should fucking be used to it by now 🤡🤡🤡
==
Episode 1
Tumblr media
i hadn’t noticed, but it’s so cute how the first bridgerton to appear / the first character to get a solo shot this season is daphne 🥺 as if she’s passing on the baton

i’ve seen people complaining that hyacinth would be much more likely than eloise to be a proto-feminist but i have to disagree. eloise and hyacinth are extremely alike in some aspects, i can easily see both of them buying into proto-feminist philosophy. but they are also extremely different in other aspects, and this is easily seen on their respective bffs (best featherington friends).
the whole peneloise dynamic is that penelope always wanted to be at the center of high society, but was shunned - because of her lack of title, her more unconventional beauty, her mother’s impositions and attitude; while eloise has it all (titled father/brother, conventional beauty, mother/family who is not only beloved by their peers but are also loving and respectful towards her), but chooses to be where penelope was forced to. eloise is loud about her beliefs because doesn’t care for the (social) consequences. she hates it here, she wants out. no wonder she fucked off to the countryside the moment penelope got hitched, she wouldn’t last a second in london by herself.
hyacinth is completely different. her best friend was “the only featherington sister blessed both with natural beauty and charm” (penelope’s words). neither of them ended up on the shelf. hyacinth is just as smart, quick-witted and sharp-tongued as eloise, but, at the same time, both her and felicity know their way around high society way better than their older sisters ever could (lady whistledown notwithstanding). hya might as well agree with everything eloise thinks, but she goes an entirely different way about it. gareth accused lady danbury of “remaking [hyacinth] in her image”, but honestly she never had to. just like lady danbury, hyacinth is the type to see high society as a game, and it’s a game she’s going to win.
(and that’s why hyacinth stole eloise’s spot as my favourite bridgerton sibling in the books)

really want to know how tf they come up with those hairstyles. are there any ground rules or do they just go wild???? like, considering the costuming + hair&makeup departments have never opened a history book in their lives, what is the process here????
==
Tumblr media
*sweats*
==
Tumblr media
honestly, this should’ve been the first red flag. book!edwina just really wanted to marry a scholar
in fact, thinking about all the shit i already know they’ve pulled this season, most of it ultimately relied on mutilating edwina as character
==
there was something about the actress who plays mary, and i thought it was just that she’s really pretty, but i just realised she looks a lot like my mother
==
Tumblr media
oh i hadn’t noticed this! mr finch comments on lady whitledown’s plant puns later!
==
i love daphne being the older sister 🥺 ik eloise definitely hated it, but it’s so sweet of her to try and guide her on her first season. and it reminds me of how she used her title to help gregory out with lucy on his book
==
man i really want to know what kate was thinking while watching anthony dance. the book already starts with her knowing about his Rake reputation via lady whistledown (in fact, it’s the quote where the title of this episode comes from), even before they meet, so her first impression is already tainted. but here the slate is better than clean, they’ve already laughed together, so is she interested in him for edwina? for herself? dare she hope? maybe she’s interested in him for herself but doesn’t think she has a chance (not sure if this kate has as big self-steem issues as her book counterpart or if she’s just really focused on solving the marriage+money problems) and is lying to herself pretending she’s just scouting him out for edwina?
==
violet keeps trying to recruit benedict’s help and he’s just having none of it lmao
==
Tumblr media
i’ve seen people complaining about how lady danbury treated kate this season but honestly this scene alone is enough to justify anything she might throw at her later on. if i acted like this today my mother would be pissed, imagine in the 1810s
==
can’t get over how they spent all of season 1 with that siena drama only for her to not even appear on season 2
to think everyone was worried about them turning it into a siena/anthony/kate love triangle, and then they came out of left field with a edwina/anthony/kate love triangle and just ignored literally everything that happened to anthony on season 1
==
lmao and now that i think about it, i remember how people complained about anthony on td&i and it turns out he was originally written as having just inherited the title and julia quinn changed it last minute to edmund having died 10 years ago bc it would make more sense with what she was already writing on tvwlm. so with the tv series everyone thought we’d have a more likeable and cohesive anthony from the beginning......................
and then on season 1 they delivered the worst man i’ve ever seen in my life, truly acting like he’d just become viscount last year, having none of the beliefs and motivations and ideals and overall anything that he had on the books, and we were so sure they were changing his whole backstory................
and then on season 2 they completely ignored everything that happened on season 1 and basically the only thing that they kept from the book was anthony’s backstory....................
==
i thought i’d be able to finish all 3 episodes i’d already seen today, exactly bc i’d already seen them so i wouldn’t be pausing to comment all the time, but now i keep pausing to rant
==
Tumblr media
this scene! nice how they used it to parallel the way penelope is ignored as herself but celebrated as lady whistledown
==
gregory and hyacinth being together every time they appear on screen 🥺
==
someone on twitter pointed out how show!benedict has book!colin’s personality and so much makes sense now
==
love how anthony went from
Tumblr media
to
Tumblr media
in less than 50 minutes
==
Tumblr media
and that is exactly why lmao the self-sabotage is strong with this one
==
love prudence trying to talk shit about philippa with penelope but it never works bc penelope can’t stand her
==
Tumblr media Tumblr media
==
Tumblr media
why tf do the subtitles use usa spelling when the show is set on england????
==
besides anthony, something they’re treating completely different this season is the whole concept of a diamond/incomparable. on season 1, it was a totally abstract concept that just described the lady who received the most calls (which i’m sure is a lot more closer to how it worked on reality), but on this season the queen is dangerously close to issuing a certificate, and everyone is acting as if it’s always been this way???

EARLY YEARS;
Ethan Wood was born and raised to do one thing and one thing only: play soccer. Being the middle child of legendary University of North Carolina starting forward Olivier Wood and renowned athleisure wear designer Daphne Wood, there was only one path for this budding young soccer prodigy. And it was to follow in daddy’s footsteps donning the prestigious Carolina blue and white of his father’s alma mater.
His childhood was pleasant, raised on his family’s estate in the coveted Eight and filled with family getaways and father/son trips to UNC/Wake Forest rivalry matches. Matches that he hoped to one day play in. Young Ethan was a natural talent and he picked up the game rather quickly, spending every free moment practicing in the yard or scribbling down strategies. He wanted nothing more than to make his father proud and carry on his legacy.
HIGH SCHOOL;
Ethan was sent to one of the finest private schools on the island that money could buy. Of course, he wasn’t there for his grades and what he lacked in brains, his skills on the field made up for. He made varsity soccer his freshman year and then went on to become captain during his senior year, reveling in all the perks that came with being a star athlete: parties, hookups, popularity. As Ethan’s athletic abilities along with his ego continued to grow, so did his competitive edge, arrogance, and hot temper which is known for getting him into trouble on and off the pitch. He’s no stranger to an alcohol induced bawl and struggles to keep his temper under control.
COLLEGE;
It’s no secret that in the OBX money talks and Mr. Wood had deep pockets. A library donation and a legacy later, Ethan finally realized his dream and secured a spot on his beloved UNC soccer team. His temper being the reason for the trouble in the first place. It didn’t take long for him to become the frat star worthy of his reputation. Sure, he had to overcome those pesky freshman years, team hazing, and locker room banter, even spending the half a season on the bench for his hot headed temper. Nonetheless, he managed to make a name for himself even if slightly tarnished.
SEASON 1;
Fresh off his college graduation, Ethan returned to the Outer Banks with his sights set on playing professional soccer in the upcoming season. Before entering the real world in the fall, he joined the show for one last hurrah and boy did he get what he signed up for. The summer was filled with all sorts of shenanigans, parties, booze, and hook-ups.
Ethan rounded out the first season of OBX rather unscathed, save for a secret hook-up and an unlikely friendship that he formed with a pogue. He gained some notoriety from the show and it was a perfect launch for his new life in the public eye.
SEASON 2;
Ethan started footy training in the fall after the reality show ended, and he played for Inter Miami FC, a team owned by David Beckham himself. He took up residence in Miami for the soccer season and traveled the country with his team becoming the soccer star he always wanted to be. His rookie season was one for the books, and if you thought his ego couldn’t get any bigger, check again.
In his off time, Ethan maintained his growing popularity by making appearances at all the Miami hot spots and keeping up a rather impressive social media presence, constantly posting his fitness routines and workouts in addition to his nights out. This earned him a reputation off the pitch, and his name managed to find its way into the local papers and magazines. He did his best to keep in touch with his friends from the show despite his busy schedule, and even visited the OBX whenever he could.
With his first professional soccer season in the books, Ethan returned to the reality show for another summer, much to his PR team’s dismay who was working to clean up with reputation, not add to it. It was another summer filled with partying, booze, and messing around. A well deserved celebration after a triumphant soccer season. Ethan grew closer with his housemates and even started forming stronger connections with some of them as family, friends, or more.
POST SEASON 2;
High off another successful season of Outer Banks, Ethan went back to Miami with a newfound air of confidence about him and an extra pep in his step. He worked and trained twice as hard, determined to play even better than last year. He managed to  keep up his scoring average and earned ‘man of the match’ in several games. Ethan spent less time in the OBX, but instead invited his buddies to come matches and come visit whenever he got the chance. He loved to preform and there was something about having the cast around that made him play even better.
With only a handful of games left, Ethan suffered an injury that cut his season short. He tore his MCL and spent the months leading up to the summer recovering and going to physical therapy in Miami. His PR team advised him against returning to the show to focus on getting in shape for the upcoming season, but Ethan couldn’t pass up the opportunity to spend the summer in Australia with his crew.
POGUES VS KOOKS;
Ethan got into his fair share of Pogues vs Kooks scuffles back in high school. Nights filled with stupid boyish banter, booze, and blows. He likes to think he’s above all the rivalry now— playing pro ball and all—  but sometimes he still struggles to truly let go of the past and be the bigger person. He’s an athlete though and though, and rivalries are all just a part of the game.
HEADCANONS;
Despite the ever present confident air about him, Ethan is super generous especially when it comes to nights out and tipping. He is always happy to pick up the tab and doll out rounds of shots for him and his buddies at no charge. As selfish as he can be sometimes, he loves it when his friends are having a good time and is a firm believer in the more the merrier.
To help him keep his tempter on and off the pitch under control, Ethan got into boxing/mma and incorporates it into his workouts whenever he can. He can be found either going to a gym to practice his upper cuts or on beach working on them on his own. He does it mostly for fun, but every now and again finds himself having to throw down.
For the most part, Ethan can’t really cook, but on the off chance he’s not sneaking out after a one night stand, he makes a killer breakfast, usually in his boxers.
He has secret love for astronomy and mythology particularly hero myths and the stories behind the constellations. Growing up, he always found them fascinating and was the only one of his brothers who would actually sit and listen to his grandfather babble on about them. Those were some of his most cherished memories, and he often celebrates his goals by blowing a kiss to the heavens to dedicate them the ol’ man.
Moana is his absolute favorite Disney movie, and he will never say no to watching it. He also thinks Maui is the shit and knows all of the words to “You’re Welcome” by heart. Beware, he will actually belt it out if asked.
WANTED CONNECTIONS;
let’s make ‘em jealous; There’s no denying that Ethan and this person have chemistry. They are super flirty and all over each other, but in reality it’s all a rouse. They aren’t really into one another and are merely using each other to stir up some drama, cause a scene, and make the ones that really do catch their eyes jealous.  [OPEN]
the role model; Ethan didn’t really have many positive role models to look up to growing up, mainly just his father and his toxic masculinity. This person helps Ethan balance all that out and helps him deal with all those pesky emotions he was taught to keep suppressed inside in order to “be a man.” This person also keeps him in check and isn’t afraid to give him a much needed smack to the upside of the head when necessary. [OPEN]
the rival; To say Ethan is competitive is the understatement of the century, and he and this person have a rivalry for the ages. The two don’t like each other and this person never fails to get under Ethan’s skin. It could have even started back in school and carried over to now. Perhaps the reason Ethan had some trouble getting into UNC for soccer? Bonus points if they have to put all their differences aside and work together at some point for a common goal. [OPEN]
the hook-ups; Ethan really isn’t the type to stick around after a hook-up and is usually out before the sun comes up, never wanting to get attached. If anyone wants to give him a much deserved slap upside the head or just wants to keep things casual and flirty, let me know! [OPEN]
the real bros; for those looking for a second muse, Ethan has two brothers xD. Julian and Damian (names can totally change! I just headcannon them all ending in -an) He has one older brother who rejected the athlete/UNC/kook life leaving Ethan with the pressure to fill daddy’s soccer boots. They had a fall out and their relationship is shaky at best. Ethan also has a baby bro who he is definitely closer with. They get on rather typically through harmless banter and school boy shenanigans. He also has an innate protectiveness over him because he is older. [OPEN]
Totally open to anything and everything, so feel free to shoot me a message!! Also if you read all that WOW. You are the real MVP.

Shadow Over Seventh Heaven Review, Part I: Last Night I Dreamt I Went to Maljardin Again
Tumblr media
Once, April Tennant had been the greatest screen star of all. Even now that this stunning creature was gone, the victim of a hideous accident, her name still cast a magic glow. And nowhere was her haunting spell more alive than within her great walled estate of San Rafael.
It was here that April had lived in her storybook marriage with famed actor Richard Morgan. It was here that her memory was worshipped still. And it was here that lovely young Jenny Summers came as Richard Morgan's new bride--to discover the terror behind the tinsel in this place transformed from a paradise of the living to a hell of the undead.... (inside front cover)
Welcome, fellow Strangers and all others who happen upon this post. This week, I have decided to begin a new series exploring the Gothic novels written by co-creator and first headwriter of Strange Paradise, Ian Martin, under the pen name Joen Arliss. Mostly, the purpose of this series will be to compare the plot and characters of Strange Paradise and those of his novels and what that may indicate about his original intentions for the overarching story of the soap opera.
I got the idea to start this series while writing my review of Episode 26, after the contents of an article referenced in one of the scenes reminded me of the events in this book. On his now-defunct website Maljardin.com, Curt Ladnier covered some of the similarities between “Here Goes the Bride,” the CBS Radio Mystery Theater drama from which this book was adapted, and Strange Paradise, but I wanted to dive deeper and do one of my characteristic overanalyses. So fly with me to the grand southwestern estate of San Rafael and together let’s explore Shadow Over Seventh Heaven--and let me warn you, there will be spoilers for the entire Maljardin arc of SP.
As noted above, Shadow Over Seventh Heaven is an adaptation of a radio drama that Martin wrote for CBS Radio Mystery Theater. CBSRMT is, perhaps unquestionably, Ian Martin’s most famous work. Created by Himan Brown in 1974 and running for 1,399 nightly episodes, Martin wrote a total of 243 (including many adaptations of literary classics) and acted in 255, typically in supporting roles. He continued writing and acting on the series all the way until his death in 1981 at the age of 69. Given my tendency to procrastinate, which sometimes makes it difficult to write just one episode review a week even when I’m not busy, I envy him for being such a prolific writer. I suspect that all the soap scripts he wrote got him into the habit, and he just couldn’t break it.
Even more extraordinary is that he wrote and published five novels during the same period that he worked on CBSRMT. His first was Nightmare’s Nest (1979), an adaptation of the CBSRMT play “The Deathly White Man” (and not the other drama, also by him, of the same name), which is his answer to Jane Eyre and which also has some interesting connections with SP which I plan to explore in another review series. Next came this novel, and then Beloved Victim (1981), adapted from “A Lady Never Loses Her Head,” which I don’t recall having anything noteworthy in common with SP, but I may need to re-read it to make sure. He also wrote two mystery novels, The Shark Bait Affair and The Ladykiller Affair, for the Zebra Mystery Puzzler series, but those are both very rare now and I haven’t yet read either, so I can’t say anything about them. The book Mystery Women: An Encyclopedia of Leading Women Characters in Mystery Fiction does, however, provide some information on their protagonist, Kate Graham, along with short plot summaries. As someone with two trunk novels from the last decade and about fifty pages of a third--which I mostly stopped working on after I started this blog--I also envy him for this. How on Earth did he find the time?
But I digress. Like that of “Here Goes the Bride,” the plot of Shadow Over Seventh Heaven draws heavy inspiration from Daphne du Maurier’s famous Gothic romance Rebecca, but with some major differences in plot and characterization. The novel fleshes out the radio drama some more, adding additional details and plot twists that aren’t present in the original play, which arguably make it more interesting. One gets the impression that he had a lot of story in mind while he penned the original drama, but knew he could only squeeze so much into a 45-minute radio play and so had to leave many of the most interesting details out.
But that’s enough background information. Let’s begin our analysis and see what Ian Martin’s later work can tell us about his original intentions for Strange Paradise.
Introduction
Tumblr media
The face is lovely, matchless....
Opening like some gigantic and exotic flower as the camera zooms in...
It fills the screen, flawless, enticing....
The lower lip glistens, pulled away from those perfect teeth, trembling ever so slightly, promising undreamed-of delights for the man brave enough to taste its forbidden fruit....
The skin glows with an inner light....
The eyes beyond the thick fringe of dark eyelashes shimmer with the deep violet of a tropical night....
The pitiless exposé of the camera is defeated, no matter how close it probes in close-up....
This is beauty without blemish....
This is everyman's dream woman--sex symbol of the nation, and most of the world....
This is April Tennant!
Strange to think of her dead, for on the screen she is captured forever in all her vibrancy and stunning beauty....
Impossible to think of her lying, mangled and bleeding on the rocks, while the hungry sea licks out as if to possess her.
Incredible to think of her cold and in the grave. Which she has been for twelve months--or this story never would have begun (p. 5).
The first page of the novel introduces us to April Tennant, this novel’s Rebecca and also its Erica Desmond. Like Rebecca, she is the first wife of the protagonist’s love interest, whose tragic death will cast a shadow over her former estate. Like Erica, she was a famous actress--probably more so than Erica ever was--but the cause of her death is not the same as the alleged cause of Erica’s. In Episode 5 of Strange Paradise, Erica’s grieving husband Jean Paul claims that she died of eclampsia while pregnant with their son, although evidence uncovered by other characters in later episodes leads them to contest that claim. Instead, April’s death resembles that of Huaco, the wife of Jean Paul’s ancestor Jacques Eloi des Mondes who died when she fell from a cliff on Maljardin, Jacques’ island estate.
In this introduction, we also see what will become a theme of the novel: gaze. Not just the male gaze--the obvious POV of the introduction--but, more generally, the viewing of April Tennant almost exclusively through the eyes of other characters, both male and female. We never learn much about her inner life, even as we learn those of Jenny (our protagonist), Richard, and others. April is largely a mystery, a larger-than-life figure of ideal beauty who, in the eyes of the public, is more a legend than she is flesh and blood. It’s the same mystique that surrounds celebrities in real life that often makes other people forget that they, too, are human--if, indeed, that’s what April was. Or is there more to it? I guess we’ll have to find it.
Chapter 1
The first chapter begins with a detailed description of San Rafael--and by detailed, I mean that Ian Martin spends one and a half pages describing its wall, followed by two on the mansion itself. I won’t type out too many passages from this book for copyright reasons--for, unlike Strange Paradise, this book is still under copyright--but I will include some highlights. The wall surrounding the castle “was thick enough at the bottom to withstand any tremor of the California earth...topped by a corona of jagged broken glass and it ran for a mile and three-quarters in a great semicircle away from the rocky Pacific coast and back to it again” (p. 6). On its gate,
The ironwork swept and swirled in great balanced curlicues, and the frame was heavy and studded. The studs held great sheets of blackened steel, heavy enough to withstand a battering ram, blocking any vision of the grounds the wall concealed. And the vertical members of the scrollwork reared high above the frame of the door and the top of the wall in a bristling array of spikes, sharp as swords, arched forward to further discourage any hardy trespasser who might try to climb their height (pp. 6-7).
In case you haven’t already figured it out, Martin loved his purple prose. If you don’t like Byzantine descriptions of architecture, ironwork, clothing, or anything else, you probably shouldn’t read this book or any of Martin’s other novels. (Nightmare’s Nest is far purpler, however, than this one. There’s an entire chapter in there devoted to describing the protagonist’s lush Edwardian finery.) Fortunately for me, I love this kind of thing and will gladly devour description after description of gates covered in iron curlicues. My literary tastes tend toward “more is more” and I’m not ashamed to admit it.
We learn that San Rafael is a reconstruction of an old Spanish mission, commissioned by April and built in part by Richard himself, “who personally took charge of putting in all the glass that fronted on the sea.” The gardens that surround it give it “a riot of color--bougainvillea, hibiscus, passionflowers, trumpet vines--all enhanced and set off against the majesty of rows of carefully spaced Italian cedar, or Lombardy poplar” (pp. 7-8).
Despite all this radiant beauty--and as one might expect for reconstructed ruins from the era of Spanish colonialism--the estate is believed to be cursed, at least by “the superstitious peons who built the walls” (p. 9).  (That’s what the book uncharitably describes the Mexican builders--some parts of this book haven’t aged well, as you will see.) Two men died while rebuilding it, followed by April herself around a decade later.
Surprisingly, we learn at the end of this chapter that Richard Morgan’s background differs from that of Jean Paul Desmond. An actor himself, he “was king of the theater, and of East Coast entertainment. Their marriage was a royal one, and it vaulted both of them to new and undreamed-of heights of popularity” (pp. 9-10). It was this popularity that drove them to wall themselves in at San Rafael and use the police and guard dogs to keep rabid fans and paparazzi away--which, ultimately, didn’t work and only led to “a new wave of interest and snooping” (p. 10).
Chapter 2
Here we meet Richard’s sister Lisa, who is...well...quite an interesting character. She’s a beautiful woman with short hair, a deep voice, and--most importantly--an unusual, creepy level of attachment to her brother.
Tumblr media
Cersei Lannister Lisa Morgan.
Lisa has just received a phone call from the Philippines where her brother is. The call has left her “literally stunned” (p. 11), which means that the modern slang meaning of “literally” dates back 30+ years longer than I thought. Surprisingly, she isn’t drinking wine to calm her nerves like Cersei above, but that’s her loss.
As she gazes at the ocean to the west, her housekeeper, Conchita Aguilar,  enters. Chita (as she is usually called) has not just worked as April’s housekeeper for most of her life, but also "she and her husband, Juan, had quite literally brought up April” (p. 13); as a result, she is fiercely loyal to the family of her deceased mistress. Here is a portrait of her:
Looking at the tiny woman with her bright button eyes, the black Indian hair swept stiffly away from her face, parted in the middle and tidily put away in a tight bun low on the back of her neck, Lisa was surprised at the sudden urge to go and take this familiar person in her arms--or better still have Chita take her in hers.[...]Chita might be tiny, but she was all steel and whipcord (p. 13).
Tumblr media
Sound familiar?
Yes, Chita bears a resemblance to our beloved Raxl. They even have a similar background, for Raxl, too, comes from a people indigenous to Mexico, according to Episode 23.  Like Raxl, Chita is very old and has a mysterious magnetism that draws some people to her (which, in Raxl’s case, includes me). There are some minor differences--Chita doesn’t worship the Great Serpent, she uses gratuitous Spanish instead of gratuitous French, she has a living husband and grandson--but they are, in most ways, the same character. It’s clear that Ian Martin didn’t want to part with Raxl, and I don’t blame him one bit.
Also, for whatever reason, he was oddly insistent on both of them having a specific hairstyle. If you read the original script for the show’s pilot, you will see that he was almost as specific about Raxl’s hairstyle, mentioning “her hair tightly drawn over her ears to a small bun,” but less detailed about those of the other characters. Just an odd detail that probably bears little significance, but that I noticed.
Lisa tells Chita that Richard is on his way home with a new wife, a young, very wealthy orphan named Jenny Summers whom he met in the Philippines. This angers the ancient housekeeper, who argues that Jenny can never come to San Rafael
Because there is no place for her here--en la casa de La Señora! Everything here is hers--she still lives here, and will always live here. Her perfume is in every room, her pictures are everywhere, every ornament and ashtray and book I keep just the way she last touched it. There is no room for any other wife here! Oh, she will feel it, she will know it, because La Señora would never permit another woman to take her place (p. 16)!
Lisa insists that, despite the risk that Jenny won’t want to live on the estate and despite her equal displeasure about the situation, Chita keep an open mind regarding her and try not to be such a Mrs. Danvers about the situation. (OK, so she doesn’t actually say the last part; that’s just my paraphrase.) She also tries to pressure Chita into helping her take down the mementos of April at Richard’s orders, which she objects to, both for sentimental reasons and because they don’t have time to have the enormous fresco of April that adorns the former chapel. (Symbolism!)
Tumblr media
“It was a breathless and yet terrible beauty. For any woman who stood next to it had to be eclipsed” (p. 20).
Yes, you read that right: they rededicated the mission’s former chapel to the silver screen sex goddess April Tennant. After their wedding, Richard had a giant fresco of her painted there in place of its former altar. This is a clear indication that one or more of the people in this household worship April, whether literally or figuratively. More than that, the portrait glows like that of THE DEVIL JACQUES ELOI DES MONDES, and seems, like Jacques’ portrait, to be alive, the living essence of a dead person. “Most haunting of all was the feeling that this was the woman--that she could not have died, that any moment she would step off the wall, and her silver laughter would fill the house again (p. 20).”
Tumblr media
I’m sorry, Jacques. ;)
Coming up next: Jenny arrives at San Rafael and tries to adjust to living on an estate where almost everyone but Richard acts like they hate her.

Life in Film: Ben Wheatley.
As Netflix goes gothic with a new Rebecca adaptation, director Ben Wheatley tells Jack Moulton about his favorite Hitchcock film, the teenagers who will save cinema, and a memorable experience with The Thing.
“The actual process of filmmaking is guiding actors and capturing emotion on set. That’s enough of a job without putting another layer of postmodern film criticism over the top of it.” —Ben Wheatley
Winter’s coming, still no vaccine, the four walls of home are getting pretty samey… and what Netflix has decided we need right now is a lavish, gaslight-y psychological thriller about a clifftop manor filled with the personality of its dead mistress—and a revival of one of the best menaces in screen history. Bring on the ‘Mrs Danvers’ Hallowe’en costumes, because Rebecca is back.
In Ben Wheatley’s new film adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s best-selling 1938 novel, scripted by Jane Goldman, Lily James plays an orphaned lady’s maid—a complete nobody, with no known first name—who catches the eye of the dashing, cashed-up Maxim de Winter (Armie Hammer).
Very quickly, the young second Mrs de Winter is flung into the intimidating role of lady of Manderley, and into the shadow of de Winter’s late first wife, Rebecca. The whirlwind romance is over; the obsession has begun, and it’s hotly fuelled by Manderley’s housekeeper, Mrs Danvers (Kristin Scott Thomas, perfectly cast).
Tumblr media
Each adaptation of du Maurier’s story has its own quirks, and early Letterboxd reactions suggest viewers will experience varying levels of satisfaction with Wheatley’s, depending on how familiar they are with both the novel and earlier screen versions—most notably, Alfred Hitchcock’s 1940 Best Picture winner, starring Laurence Olivier Joan Fontaine, and Judith Anderson.
Why would you follow Hitchcock? It’s been 80 years; Netflix is likely banking on an audience of Rebecca virgins (the same kind of studio calculation that worked for Bradley Cooper’s A Star is Born). Plus, the new Rebecca is a Working Title affair; it has glamor, camp, Armie Hammer in a three-piece suit, the sunny South of France, sports cars, horses, the wild Cornish coast, Lily James in full dramatic heat, and—controversial!—a fresh twist on the denouement.
A big-budget thriller made for a streamer is Wheatley coming full circle, in a way: he made his name early on with viral internet capers and a blog (“Mr and Mrs Wheatley”) of shorts co-created with his wife and longtime collaborator, Amy Jump. Between then and now, they have gained fans for their well-received low-to-no budget thrillers, including High-Rise, Kill List and Free Fire (which also starred Hammer).
Over Zoom, Wheatley spoke to Letterboxd about the process of scaling up, the challenge of casting already-iconic characters, and being a year-round horror lover. [The Rebecca plot discussion may be spoilery to some. Wheatley is specifically talking about the du Maurier version, not his film.]
Tumblr media
Armie Hammer and Ben Wheatley on the set of ‘Rebecca’.
Can you tell us how you overcame any concerns in adapting a famous novel that already has a very famous adaptation? How did you want to make a 1930s story relevant to modern audiences? Ben Wheatley: When you go back to the novel and look at how it works, you see it’s a very modern book. [Author Daphne du Maurier is] doing stuff that people are still picking up the pieces of now. It’s almost like the Rosetta Stone of thrillers—it tells you everything on how to put a thriller together. The genre jumping and Russian-doll nature of the structure is so delicious. When you look at the characters in the book, they’re still popping up in other stuff—there’s Mrs Danvers in all sorts of movies.
It remains fresh because of its boldness. Du Maurier is writing in a way that’s almost like a dare. She’s going, “right, okay, you like romantic fiction do you? I’ll write you romantic fiction; here’s Maxim de Winter, he’s a widower, he’s a good-looking guy, and owns a big house. Here’s a rags-to-riches, Cinderella-style girl. They’re going to fall in love. Then I’m going to ruin romantic fiction for you forever by making him into a murdering swine and implicating you in the murder because you’re so excited about a couple getting away with it!”
That’s the happy ending—Maxim doesn’t go to prison. How does that work? He’s pretty evil by the end. It’s so subtly done that you only see the trap of it after you finish reading the book. That’s clearly represented in Jane Goldman’s adaptation that couldn’t be done in 1940 because of the Hays Code. That whole element of the book is missing [in Hitchcock’s Rebecca]. But I do really like this style of storytelling in the 1930s and ’40s that is not winky, sarcastic, and cynical. It’s going, “here’s Entertainment with a big ‘E’. We’re going to take you on holiday, then we’re gonna scare you, then we’re gonna take you around these beautiful houses that you would never get a chance to go around, and we’re gonna show you these big emotions.”
After High-Rise, you ended up circling back to more contained types of films, whereas Rebecca is your lushest and largest production. How was scaling up for you? Free Fire does feel like a more contained film, but in many ways it was just as complicated and had the same budget as High-Rise, since it’s just in one space. Happy New Year, Colin Burstead is literally a contained film, that’s right. What [the bigger budget] gave me was the chance to have a conversation where I say I want a hotel that’s full of people and no-one says you can’t have any people in it. You don’t have to shoot in a corner, so that scale is suddenly allowed.
Tumblr media
Elisabeth Moss and Tom Hiddlestone in Wheatley’s ‘High-Rise’ (2015).
The other movies I did are seen as no-budget or, I don’t even know the word for how little money they are, and even though High-Rise and Free Fire were eight million dollars each, they’re still seen as ultra-low budget. This is the first film that I’ve done that’s just a standard Hollywood-style movie budget and it makes a massive difference. It gives you extra time to work. All the schemes you might have had to work out in order to cheat and get around faster, but now it’s fine, let’s only shoot two pages today. We can go out on the road and close down all of the south of France—don’t worry about all the holidaymakers screaming at you and getting cross! That side of it is great.
You had the challenge to cast iconic actors for iconic roles. What were you looking for in the casting? What points of reference did you give the actors? I don’t think we really talked about it, but [Armie Hammer] definitely didn’t watch the Hitchcock version. I can understand why he wouldn’t. There was no way he was going to accidentally mimic [Laurence] Olivier’s performance without seeing it and he just didn’t want to have the pressure of that. I think that’s quite right. It’s an 80-year-old film, it’s a beloved classic, and we’d be mad if we were trying to remake it. We’re not.
The thing about the shadow that the film cast is that it’s hard enough making stuff without thinking about other filmmakers. I’ve had this in the past where journalists ask me “what were your influences on the day?” and I wish I could say “it was a really complicated set of movies that the whole thing was based around”, but it’s not like that. When you watch documentaries about filmmakers screening loads of movies for their actors before they make something—it’s lovely, but it’s not something I’ve ever done.
The actual process of filmmaking is guiding actors and capturing emotion on set. That’s enough of a job without putting another layer of postmodern film criticism over the top of it—“we’ll use this shot from 1952, that will really make this scene sing!”—then you’re in a world of pain. Basically, it’s my interpretation of the adaptation. The book is its own place, and for something like High-Rise, [screenwriter Amy Jump] has the nightmare of sitting down with 112 pages of blank paper and taking a novel and smashing it into a script. That’s the hard bit.
Tumblr media

Current industry news is not so great—cinemas are facing bankruptcy, film festivals in the USA are mostly virtual, Disney is focusing on Disney+ only. How do you feel about a future where streaming dominates the market and the theatrical experience becomes, as we fear, an exclusive niche? Independent cinema was born out of very few movies. If you look at the history of Eraserhead—that film on its own almost created all of cult cinema programming. One movie can do that. It can create an audience that is replicated and becomes a whole industry. And that can happen again, but it needs those films to do that. They will come as things ebb and flow. The streamers will control the whole market and then one day someone will go “I don’t want to watch this stuff, I want to watch something else” and they’ll go make it.
It’s like The Matrix, it’s a repeating cycle. There’ll always be ‘the One’. There’s Barbara Loden in 1970 making Wanda, basically inventing American independent cinema. So I don’t worry massively about it. I know it’s awkward and awful for people to go bankrupt and the cinemas to close down, but in time they’ll re-open because people will wanna see stuff. The figures for cinemagoers were massive before Covid. Are you saying that people with money are not going to exploit that? Life will find a way. Remember that the cinema industry from the beginning is one that’s in a tailspin. Every year is a disaster and they’re going bust. But they survived the Spanish Flu, which is basically the same thing.
Two months ago, you quickly made a horror movie. We’re going to get a lot of these from filmmakers who just need to create something this year. What can you identify now about this inevitable next wave of micro-budget, micro-schedule pandemic-era cinema? I’ve always made micro-budget films so that side of it is not so crazy. There will be a lot of Zoom and people-locked-in-houses films but they won’t be so interesting. They’re more to-keep-you-sane kind of filmmaking which is absolutely fine. Where you should look for [the ‘pandemic-era’ films] is from the kids and young adults through 14 to 25 who’ve been the most affected by it. They will be the ones making the true movies about the pandemic which will be in like five years’ time.
People going through GCSEs and A-Levels [final high-school exams in England] will have had their social contracts thoroughly smashed by the government after society tells them that this is the most important thing you’re ever gonna do in your life. Then the next day the government tells them “actually, you’ve all passed”, then the next day they go “no, you’ve all failed”, and then “oh no, you’ve all passed”. It’s totally bizarre. Anyone who’s in university at the moment [is] thinking about how they’ve worked really hard to get to that position and now they’ve had it taken away from them. That type of schism in that group will make for a unique set of storytelling impetus. Much more interesting than from my perspective of being a middle-age bloke and having to stay in my house for a bit, which was alright. Their experience is extreme and that will change cinema.
Tumblr media
Kristin Scott Thomas as Mrs Danvers in ‘Rebecca’.
It’s time to probe into your taste in film. Firstly, three questions about Alfred Hitchcock: his best film, most underrated film, and most overrated film? It’s tricky, there’s a lot to choose from. I think Psycho is his best film because, much like Wanda, it was the invention of indie cinema. He took a TV crew to go and do a personal project and then completely redefined horror, and he did it in the same year as Peeping Tom.
There’s stuff I really like in Torn Curtain. Certainly the murder scene where they’re trying to stick the guy in the oven. It’s a gut-wrenching sequence. Overrated, I don’t know. It’s just a bit mean, isn’t it? Overrated by who? They’re all massively rated, aren’t they?
Which film made you want to become a filmmaker? The slightly uncool version of my answer is the first fifteen minutes of Dr. No before I got sent to bed. We used to watch movies on the telly when I was a kid, so movies would start at 7pm and I had to go to bed at 7:30pm. You would get to see the first half-hour and that would be it. The opening was really intriguing. I never actually saw a lot of these movies until I was much older.
The more grown-up answer is a film like Taxi Driver. It was the first time where I felt like I’d been transported in a way where there was an authorship to a film that I didn’t understand. It had done something to me that television and straightforward movies hadn’t done and made me feel very strange. It was something to do with the very, very intense mixture of sound, music and image and I started to understand that that was cinema.
What horror movie do you watch every Hallowe’en? I watch The Thing every year but I don’t tend to celebrate Hallowe’en, to be honest. I’m of an age where it wasn’t a big deal and was never particularly celebrated. I find it a bit like “what’s all this Hallowe’en about?”—horror films for me are for all year-round.
What’s a brilliant mindfuck movie that perhaps even cinephiles haven’t seen? What grade of cinephile are we talking? All of the work by Jan Švankmajer, maybe. Hard to Be a God is pretty mindfucky if you want a bit of that, but cinephiles should know about it. It’s pretty intense. Marketa Lazarová too.
Tumblr media
‘Marketa Lazarová’ (1967) directed by František Vláčil.
What is the greatest screen romance that you totally fell head over heels for? I guess it’s Casablanca for me. That would be it.
Which coming-of-age film did you connect to the most as a teenager? [Pauses for effect] Scum.
Who is an exciting newcomer director we should keep our eyes on? God, I don’t know. I would say Jim Hosking but he’s older than me and he’s not a newcomer because he’s done two movies. So, that’s rubbish. He doesn’t count.
[Editor’s note: Hosking contributed to ABCs of Death 2 with the segment “G is for Grandad” while Wheatley contributed to The ABCs of Death with the segment “U is for Unearthed” and also executive produced the follow-up film.]
What was your best cinema experience? [Spoiler warning for The Thing.]
Oh, one that speaks in my mind is seeing The Thing at an all-nighter in the Scala at King’s Cross, and I was sitting right next to this drunk guy who was talking along to the screen. It was a packed cinema with about 300 people, and someone at the front told him “will you just shut up?” The guy says “I won’t shut up. You tell me to shut up again and I’ll spoil the whole film!” The whole audience goes “no, no, no!” and he went “it’s the black guy and the guy with the beard—everyone else dies!” That made me laugh so much.
Do you have a favorite film you’ve watched so far this year? Yeah, Zombie Flesh Eaters.

name   -   daphne marisol santos

dislikes   -   sleeping alone, being underestimated, appearing weak in public, losing attention to someone else, sitting still for too long, intense humidity, bad reviews, stumbling over her words, stepping on cracks in the pavement, people seeing her cry, talk show interviews
biography
daphne was born in the   ‘   ski capital of the east   ’   stowe, vermont. a town of just over four thousand people, the expectation of her excelling in an acting career was almost non-existent. but she was certain of her talent and she knew there was only one thing she wanted from life, so she moved to LA fresh out of high school and got to work with small jobs, slowly building up to her first truly big break with lady macbeth
after that she began her rise to real stardom, filming midsommar and little women and racking up nominations for a variety of awards, including the academy award for best supporting actress. that being said, she’s won few of the awards she was nominated for, always a bridesmaid never a bride or whatever, and that’s weighed on her pretty heavily.
all she can see is this conception of being the best, being beloved, and a lot of that lies in producing exceptional work and perfecting a public persona that makes her the height of elegance and someone it is impossible not to be a fan of
big ol’ fake right here, she never really lets anyone see the real her, the girl who snorts when she laughs and and panics before every interview, and she tries not to keep anyone too close because it’s just another opportunity for scandal
so that’s some intense pressure, which leads to the explanation of her sin   -   wrath. daphne’s prone to fits of rage, tantrums when she’s alone in her hotel room, rambled rants in the makeup chair between takes, profuse apologies afterwards. she’ll smile in front of the cameras and make you regret it in private, i promise you.
she’s not afraid to use people for her own benefit, but she has this way about her that makes you feel semi-grateful you even got the opportunity to be apart of her larger plan
hasn’t kept close contact with her parents since moving, they weren’t in love with the idea and she was not going to allow herself to be held back. she justifies ignoring their calls by saying she’s cutting out negative energy
has been trying her best for so long, doesn’t remember what it’s like to feel normal, just has a bunch of pent up aggression and sadness but it’s fine she’s fine
wanted connections
someone she’s known since the beginning of her career, maybe they used to work on smaller projects together or go to the same auditions while they were starting up, but maybe there’s a lil bit of a connection there bc they knew/liked one another before the fame and now they just vibe together
imagine the potential of two people who bother each other so much and then eventually start to see the good in one another but it’s complicated but hey we’re both on this elevator so why not kiss but then the door opens and it’s ur floor and i don’t get off and we don’t see each other for a week and when we do we pretend it didn’t happen bc we just started being friends and then who knows ... just a thought
exes ? maybe they were in love maybe it was just pr idk
surrogate family   !   since her parents are cut off she does need someone to love and care for her a lil bit and also to reciprocate that with she’s not completely heartless
enemies  /  rivals, someone who’s constantly trying to best her and with whom she is trying to do the same
publicity friendship maybe ? they hangout on occasion bc they know their fans are obsessed w them being friends and love a good photo op but lowkey dont like each other
that’s all i have but hey .. we’ll figure smth out if u don’t like those

Reporting in from Paleyfest
I have returned from Paleyfest (and some drinks with friends afterwards so sorry for the delay)! It was a great experience - the crowd was psyched and it was all super fun. I’m glad you all got the livestream so you can enjoy the whole panel too. I’m actually pretty surprised that there wasn’t some kind of announcement made, either about possible Season 14 (although Singer alluded to it with “maybe we’ll go there next season” it’s not a confirmation and he could just be assuming) or about Wayward. It seemed like with this much PR going on there would be something substantial to promote BUT the crossover ep itself is a big deal and a long time in the making so I guess it was the occasion.
Speaking of the crossover episode, I’m going to break the rules (or the very polite request that they gave us) to not spoil it for anyone else. @tinkdw asked me to and I’m guessing there are other people out there who’d like to know some the details in advance. (I’m also not a member of the press or anything or else I’d have more qualms about making public stuff they asked to keep on the DL since it would be job-related.)
SO - I am putting my thoughts on the episode below a cut. If you read on, know that I will spoil the whole plot and also give you my initial analysis of it from the perspective I usually have (Destiel-positive, endgame-positive). And if you’d rather not spoil, just scroll on.
@elizabethrobertajones @naruhearts @sactownbrowns3 @amwritingmeta @postmodernmulticoloredcloak @mittensmorgul @amyoatmeal and any other meta writers (who I forgot b/c it’s 4:30am to my body clock) I’m alerting you to the existence of this post in case you want the episode details ahead of time BUT in your position I probably wouldn’t so don’t feel in any way bad if you don’t want to read now. (I’ll reblog once it airs.)
***SPOILERS BELOW THE CUT LIKE WOAH***
I loved this episode!! It was a ton of fun. It was slapstick and silly but did some heavy lifting too. Honestly, it worked the way a lot of our favorite crack episodes did and alluded to at least one of them explicitly (”Changing Channels,” obvs, and I think there may have been more subtle references to others).
I’m too tired to do a full meta analysis but here’s a kind of bullet recap, first of the most plot-based elements:
The plot turns on the fact that the Scooby Doo world, suddenly, ends up functioning like the world Sam and Dean inhabit. The boys enter the cartoon assuming all usual cartoon rules would apply (and Dean’s ready to have a rollicking good time with them) only to discover that the first murder in the haunted house is real. Ghosts are real. Death is real. Sam wants to tell the Scooby gang about it from the get-go but Dean wants to protect them and preserve their innocence.
It’s already obviously about childhood, and losing it, but Dean makes it explicit by talking about how much he loved Scooby Doo because no matter where their dad had dragged them it would always be on. They were his friends and constant companions. He is really being thrown into the best part of his childhood....and you can see why it would be the best because it’s probably his fantasy and deepest wish that the ghosts, demons, etc. of the world he inhabits would turn out just to be bad guys in masks, death wouldn’t be real, etc. It’s Dean safe place in childhood because it takes his actual life (ghost hunting) and makes it safe and even fun. Dean wants to keep his safe place safe and is shocked and horrified when the rules of his universe invade.
It’s Sam who wants to tell them the truth about monsters from the word “go” even before it’s been revealed that death can come to Scooby Doo. (Dean laments, heartbreakingly, that it doesn’t matter if he dies...what’s important is that they make sure Scooby doesn’t die because clearly he’s such an innocent creature.) Sam, who did not have his childhood cut as abruptly short as Dean and who did not have to seek solace in a cartoon world because Dean helped him make a safe space in the real world, doesn’t see the point of lying about ghosts being real. Dean, who worked to keep Sam safe from this knowledge for YEARS of his own stunted childhood by acting as a parent, does want to keep the gang in the dark because he wants them to retain their innocence. It’s a huge lampshade to the different experiences Sam and Dean had as children and as sons.
They do eventually have to tell the Scooby gang and, wonderfully, it induces an existential crisis in them. Watching Daphne question the existence of God based on what she has inferred about the afterlife is amazing. It is not what I expected. Dean brings them back from the brink by reminding them of all the good work they had done before.
I’m going to tell the ending now and then double back to some other observations: the phantom they are chasing is the ghost of a small boy who is being manipulated, through a cursed object (a pocket knife given to him by his beloved father before he died), by an unscrupulous man (the real estate agent who we met in the beginning) who unleashes the boy’s anger on whoever he chooses for his own purpose...to scare people off of property he wants to buy. This way, the villain of a typical Scooby episode actually becomes the villain of this SPN episode...the evil real estate developer.
Before heading back to their world, where they burn the pocket knife and free the ghost, Dean convinces Sam and Cas to lie to the Scooby gang and tell them that they were right initially--ghosts aren’t real. He goes so far as to stage the unmasking of the cartoon villain (the one from the original Scooby episode) and helps them to explanations involving wires, cornstarch blood, etc. Sam is grumpy about it but does it anyway. It’s crucial to Dean that they leave the Scooby gang as they found them and not saddle them with the world the Winchesters live in.
Let me just reiterate...the ghost that has been terrorizing them is frightened little boy. Who kept a pocket knife (much like the one we see being used to carve the Winchester’s initials into the Impala) as a token of his dead father. His father is symbolized and memorialized by a weapon. The weapon is the object the little boy is tied to and that another man--a bad man--can use to manipulate him into hurting others because “I just get so angry sometimes.” To be free, the knife (weapon, father’s legacy) has to be burned. There are closeups on a very sad Dean while this happens (some sad Sam and Cas too).
It is blindingly obvious that the little boy, who is wreaking havoc on the cartoon safe space of his childhood, represents Dean. To stop the destruction Dean has to let something go (he starts the episode referencing Elsa and EXPLICITLY SAYING THIS LINE I CAN’T EVEN). Something that is keeping him angry. Something that is tied to his father. Something that can be used to manipulate him, employed as a weapon to hurt other innocent people (Mark of Cain/Demon Dean plot lines). Dean is full of anger and of self-loathing and it’s coming from the same source. That source is toxic masculinity. Let it go, Dean. Let it go.
Is it also tied to issues of sexuality? I think so. I’ll reflect a little bit below, but I wanted to do the whole plot-based analysis first.
And now the less plot-based stuff:
Ok, so can the ghost represent repressed sexuality/a different form of masculinity? SO MUCH YES. Point one: Cas is the only one who stops to take a look at the ghost and is thisclose to seeing through it’s big ol’scary disguise and finding a vulnerable child. He stops and squints at it, Cas-style, and says “I’ve never seen a ghost wear such a ridiculous costume. Unless...” and then he reaches out to it, starting to push aside the veil only to be pulled away. Now if that isn’t metaphorically precisely what Cas did, and does, for Dean and his performing facade I will buy a hat so that I can eat it.
Point two, there is a scene where the ghost is chasing everyone through a series of doors on either side of a hallway (you know the scene...they run across the hallway, doors open and shut on either side, feet flying everywhere). They successfully shut the ghost in a closet with iron chains, though it’s close to breaking out. Daphne presses her body up against the door to hold it. Dean checks her out very obviously in a way that is both superfluous to and inconsistent with the plot. This means that the silhouette of a conventionally sexy woman is QUITE LITERALLY holding the closet door closed on the ghost. Metaphorically, it shows how Dean is able to use his attraction to conventionally sexy women to hold back what’s haunting him...attraction to men, ideas about a certain type of masculinity. Does it work? BIG FAT NO. The ghost breaks out anyway. (<Puts on professor cap> Have you guys read “The Beast in the Closet”? It’s by Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick and is about "intense male homosocial desire as at once the most compulsory and the most prohibited of social bonds.” It’s about Henry James’s work but I think you would all dig it. <Takes off professor cap.>)
I wanted to start with that because I can tell that people are going to be very upset about Dean’s excessive flirtation with/pursuit of Daphne. And, yeah, I almost injured my eyes by rolling them so hard at some of the things he says. BUT THAT’S THE POINT. What he’s saying is a child’s idea of how a grown man would act with a woman he likes. And it bears a great deal of similarity to how Dean does act sometimes. We call it performing!Dean and wonder to what extent Dean is conscious of his performing. Given this episode I’d say..maybe .not that conscious? I feel like the overstated heterosexual dudebroness was done specifically to give us an over-exaggerated literal cartoon version of heterosexual Dean to compare to regular Dean so that anyone who doesn’t know Dean performs in his own life will have a lens through which to see it.
Also, Daphne is his childhood crush. OF COURSE he’s going to act like a moron around her. If I encountered [insert childhood TV crush here...for me it was Kevin from “The Wonder Years” for whatever reason] I’d act dumb as fuck! But you have to remember that she represents innocence for him...it’s established that all the Scoobies do (heh - puns!). Even if he’s kissing her hand or putting an arm around her or whatever there is no danger there, just like there’s no danger in the ghosts. Sexuality to Dean isn’t scary in Scooby Doo because it’s simple: it’s just a girl he likes. Except, just like how the ghosts are also dangerous, the love plot isn’t going to be that simple or that straightforward (heh - straight). You see where I’m going. Dean would rather be in a universe ghosts weren’t real because it’s safer and easier and kind of a fantasy land but they ARE real and he will have to deal with them; Dean would also rather be in a world where he was a suave, irresistible ladies’ man because it’s safer and easier and a kind of fantasy....but he’s not. Jensen even said so in his interview. Granted, Jensen’s comment may have just meant that Dean’s not suave like he thinks. But the actual episode draws a parallel that’s pretty damn clear.
Another reason to not worry: Daphne is zero interest in Dean at all. She has negative interest in Dean. Her lack of interest in Dean has created a void that is sucking all the air out of the room. She may not even know that Dean is hitting on her. She is so focused on Fred that no one else exists for her as a romantic interest. They are so obviously a pair, even though they are never shown to be together as a couple explicitly. <Stares directly into the camera like I’m on The Office.> Can Dean not see that? Is he blind? Well, he does see it, but he thinks Daphne is “settling” for Fred who represents a kind of masculinity that makes him uncomfortable (more in a sec). In point of fact, no one is romantically interested in Dean in this episode...unlike Sam who gets a lot of appreciation (and an eventual kiss) from Velma.
 As for Fred, Dean begins by really hating him (so much that Sam remarks on it) and when pressed about why he attributes it to Fred’s self-confidence despite things like his “stupid ascot.” Dean comes to like and admire Fred and, ultimately, have the confidence to wear an ascot himself BECAUSE HE LIKES IT. It didn’t make Fred less of a man. It doesn’t make Dean less of a man to wear it with his plaid shirt. Fred helps Dean along the way to some self-acceptance. It’s nice. Fred is there to serve as a contrast to Dean’s overblown notions of what is “masculine” and offer another form of masculinity that is, manifestly, still appealing to the ladies.
Now, remember the Scooby Doo universe doesn’t have sex in it. It’s a cartoon. And they bend those rules only the tiniest bit here. All of Dean’s advances and even his jokes are PG. That innocence on the part of the Scoobies is played for laughs, Daphne remarking that Dean is silly for not knowing that “boys and girls don’t sleep in the same room” for example, but it’s also integral to the plot. (There are some other jokes too and, for a glorious second, I thought that they were legitimately going to reveal that Daphne and Velma were a thing but sadly not.) No one would want to ruin the Scooby universe by telling them about sex...not even Dean. Again, it contains a child’s conception of relationships.
I’m imagining some people will also be upset about how the episode treats Cas. I was especially stung that, right at the outset, Dean says flat-out that “Cas is basically a talking dog.” I made a noise of indignation that made people look at me. BUT let’s also remember how much Dean loves that talking dog. He’d die for him. He wants to protect him at any cost. He doesn’t want to spoil his innocence. So, yeah, that’s not a nice thing to say but it’s also not the whole story. Cas is grouped with Scooby and Shaggy the whole time and he bonds with them, SMILING (ALERT ALERT CARTOON CASTIEL KNOWS HOW TO SMILE) AND LAUGHING when he has to leave. He thanks them for showing him the importance of humor even in dangerous times. I think it’s a good lesson for Cas and his real affection for them reminds me of what a soft character he is inside, wanting to get a cat or save monkeys or keep bees. That’s been missing from Cas lately (even though I do LOVE bamf!Cas) so maybe this will help him recall it.
I want to say again that Cas is the one who can see through the ghost and its “ridiculous costume.”
Interestingly, both his entrances (his first appearance after Fred and Dean take off to drag race; when he reunites with the boys in the haunted house) frame him as a scary villain. The first is from behind and you just see the coat billowing out (though this did remind me of the girl running the drag race in “Grease” which...lol); the second he’s silhouetted in a window, approaching it in the rain, and is then covered with a sheet before he’s “unmasked” by Dean and discovered to be a friend. This is...pretty much Castiel’s character progression always. Looks like a threat but is discovered not to be.
Once they get back to their regular world Dean makes a remark about how that was the most fun he’s ever had “including that time with the Cartwright twins.” Cas studies him and asks “What did you do with the Cartwright twins?”. There’s a long beat in which Dean looks shifty and grins and shakes his head and turns away. Sam says “I don’t think I want to know.” Cas says nothing. Cas does want to know. This is new and part of a general progression that @amwritingmeta wrote a great analysis of where Cas is becoming able to think something like Forget that sacred oath...I must know what Dean did with those twins.
There was probably more, you guys, but it’s super late for my poor body clock. Please feel free to pass this on to anyone you think would like it but bear in mind that a) there are MASSIVE SPOILERS, b) this is just my interpretation of the episode, and c) I only saw it live once so my details may be wrong.
I thought this as a fantastic episode the more I think about it and I’m SO EXCITED for all of you to get to see it too so I can hear your thoughts!! <3

Frasier: All 11 Seasons, Ranked | ScreenRant
For eleven long, critically acclaimed, highly watched, and intensely beloved seasons, Frasier was one of the best series on all of television, sitcom or otherwise. Even two decades after its original airing, the series continues to stand the test of time as one of the best there ever was, and one of the best sitcoms, most of all.
RELATED: 10 Things Frasier Did Better Than Cheers
It's hard, honestly, to pinpoint any seasons or episodes of Frasier that are all bad. Even the worst episodes of the series contain hidden gems - it's just that some of those gems are far more hidden than others. Somehow, we've managed to take a look at the series as a whole and offer a ranking of the seasons. So, how do the series' many storied seasons compare to each other? Which season will come out on top? Read on to find out.
11 Season 8
Tumblr media
It's hard to find much good in Frasier's eighth season. To be sure, there are a few diamonds within the rough. Niles and Daphne finally get their acts together and get together after seven long seasons of back and forth. Frasier hires a butler, brilliantly played by Victor Garber. Niles somehow becomes a basketball star. And, of course, "Cranes Go Caribbean."
But the season on the whole is, fittingly and unfortunately, weighed down by the truly distasteful "fat Daphne" storyline, which was the series' solution to allowing Jane Leeves time off for maternity leave.
10 Season 10
Tumblr media
Season 10 of Frasier definitely fares better than the eighth season does overall. It also contains many more memorable episodes, and far less distasteful storylines. But it also represents the most prominent featuring of one of the series' worst characters - Daphne's abusive, insufferable mother, who never seems to learn when she's long outstayed her welcome.
On the bright side, the season includes Niles and Daphne's many weddings, a hilarious Halloween prank war, and Niles and Frasier trying to learn to ride bikes. The season also includes some of the series' most emotional material, as Niles undergoes open heart surgery.
9 Season 9
Tumblr media
For better or worse (but usually worse), Frasier's ninth season is when the series starts to truly explore Daphne's expansive, obnoxious, stereotypical family, most prominently in the form of her overbearing mother. But even looking past that poorly thought out storyline, the ninth season contains some true gems in the series' run.
Major highlights include Frasier's war against a cricket, the introduction of Cam Winston, Roz developing a relationship with Roger, "Room Full of Heroes," Frasier's 2000th radio show, Niles proposing to Daphne, the arrival of Lilith's scheming half-brother Blaine Sternin, the spelling bee, a Crane brothers mystery, and Frasier's return to Boston.
8 Season 1
Tumblr media
First seasons of sitcoms are often much broader than they need to be, and tend to flow less smoothly than later seasons when characters and relationships are well-established and audiences are invested. But for the most part, Frasier's first season is a true gem, reintroducing fans to the already beloved Frasier Crane, and expanding his world with richly developed characters from the get go.
RELATED: 10 Quotes From Frasier That Are Still Hilarious Today
Highlights of the first season include the Crane boys visiting Martin's favorite steakhouse, Frasier and Niles learning a shocking truth about their parents' marriage,  the first appearance of Lilith, the first annual SeaBea awards, and Frasier and Niles' failed attempts at writing a book together.
7 Season 11
Tumblr media
It's rare that a sitcom's final season manages to be just as good as some of its earlier ones. But as it often does, Frasier manages to do the seemingly impossible, turning in a truly stellar final run filled with some of the series' most hilarious and most heartwarming episodes.
Significant highlights include Patrick Stewart's guest appearance in "The Doctor Is Out," the introduction of Ronee, Maris being accused of murder and Niles' subsequent breakdown, Martin getting high on a pot brownie, the introduction of Laura Linney's Charlotte, and the truly perfect series finale, "Goodnight, Seattle."
6 Season 6
Tumblr media
After a dramatic change to its universe at the end of the previous season, it wouldn't have been surprising for Frasier on the whole to flounder in its sixth season. But on the contrary, the series continues to show its true strengths and many gifts as it finally reaches its midway point.
RELATED: Frasier: 10 Best Niles Crane Quotes
Some of the season's highlights include Frasier's identity crisis following his firing from KACL, Niles moving into the bachelor pad at the Shangri-La, the bizarre seal adventure, the entire episode "Merry Christmas, Mrs. Moskowitz," Niles and Frasier's feud over their IQs, and the game-changing episode "Visions of Daphne."
5 Season 3
Tumblr media
In truth, season three of Frasier is a perfectly middling season. There are many storylines in the season that would earn this season a much lower spot on this list, if the many other incredible plots within the third season weren't so damn good they actually counterbalance the poor decisions. The introduction of Kate Costas, in particular, weighs down many of the season's key episodes.
But other installments of the season stand out as some of the series' best overall. True highlights from the season include Niles and Maris's separation, Niles and Daphne's famous date and dance at an elite event, the return of Diane Chambers, the infamous Leap Day adventures, and Frasier and Roz exploring the true nature of their feelings for each other.
4 Season 7
Tumblr media
It would be unthinkable for most series, but somehow, Frasier gets a true new start in its seventh season. From the get go, the stakes are raised, with Daphne's impending wedding, and the looming reveal of Niles' true feelings - and Daphne's own, as well.
RELATED: Frasier: The 5 Best Episodes (& 5 Worst)
But even with the couple's inevitable, much welcomed union at the end of the season, the seventh season is one of the series' best for many other reasons, including the Crane boys watching Antiques Roadshow, Frasier inadvertently revealing Niles' feelings to Daphne, "RDWRER," and Martin posing as a gay man to help Frasier.
3 Season 5
Tumblr media
Nowadays, five seasons is considered a decent length for a sitcom's run - which makes it all the more impressive that, five seasons in and not even at its halfway point, Frasier continued to show why it's one of the best sitcoms of all time, rarely losing steam in the process.
Highlights of the fifth season include a hilarious and emotional Halloween, Roz learning that she's pregnant, Frasier Crane Day, a cruise ship mystery, Frasier's zoo humiliation, the chaotic saga of "The Ski Lodge," Niles and Daphne's unofficial "First Date," and the shocking firing of all broadcasters on KACL.
2 Season 2
Tumblr media
When it comes to sitcom seasons, they almost don't get any better than this. From the very first episode, Frasier's second season is firing on all cylinders, with episodes both riotously hilarious and profoundly emotional. The relationships between characters truly begin to shine in this season, with the long game of Niles and Daphne's will they, won't they now fully in swing, and the deep relationship between father and sons serving as a major plotline.
Some of the second season's many, many highlights include the Crane boys searching for a lost Eddie, Frasier being mistaken for a gay man by his own boss, the arrival of Frasier's old friend Sam Malone, Niles engaging in a duel over Maris, the Crane boys going ice fishing, and Niles and Frasier investing in a restaurant.
1 Season 4
Tumblr media
Season two might be a pretty damn perfect season of Frasier. But season four takes the very concept of perfection to an entirely new level. It's practically impossible to find a single episode in the season that isn't perfectly crafted and masterfully written and acted. The perfect balance of comedy and emotion in this season represents the series at its true best.
The highlight list for this season could, therefore, very well be the entire season itself. But somehow, we've managed to narrow it down a little to a list that includes the uproarious season premiere "The Two Mrs. Cranes," Frasier's struggle to psychoanalyze his own dreams, Frasier and Niles meeting a beloved author, Niles and Daphne's growing closeness, Niles getting a dog and a bird, the KACL radio drama, and Maris filing for divorce.

Quote
Foster Stewart knows she's different. Her life has never been "normal." Talking to plants and controlling cloud formations aren't things most seventeen year olds are into. Tate "Nighthawk" Taylor is perfect. Star quarterback and all around dreamy boy next door he never thought about his "extra" abilities. What quarterback wouldn't want night vision? That's not weird, right? It's cool! But on the night of their first meeting a deadly tornado brings them together and awakens their true abilities - the power to control the element air. Unbeknown to Tate and Foster, they are the first in a group of teens that were genetically manipulated before birth to bond with the elements. Which truly sucks for Foster, as she has to face the fact that Dr. Rick Stewart, her beloved scientist father, betrayed her and now wants to use her and the others for his own nefarious world domination plot. Foster and Tate must stop Dr. Stewart and his minions before he destroys their lives and the world. Review: The Dysasters by P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast is quite interesting. The synopsis for this book sounds amazing but the further I dive into the story, the more confused I get. I really like the illustrations that are in this book though. This quote pretty much explains the whole book: "The point is when my feelings are negative I invoke the bad qualities of air. But when I am relaxed, or happy, I invoke the good things. " The Dysasters is an extremely fast paced story. Everything begins with a terrible storm and people dying. Foster and Coral are looking for a boy named Tate when a huge storm hits and kills multiple people in a small town in Missouri. One of the deceased is Coral herself. Now Foster has to go off with Tate on her own. Foster knows that she is special but she isn't sure as to why. All she wants to do is find some answers. It seems that anyone she loves or gets close to ends up dead. Tate is the typical high school jock. He loves his family and town. All Tate really wants to do is figure out what is going on and how he can help fix things. The hard thing with these two characters is that neither one of them are very likable. Foster is petty and doesn't like to share anything. Including her limited knowledge of what is going on. She spends more time fighting with Tate than actually trying to work with him to figure out how to solve their issues. Tate is constantly complaining. Even though he has a right to be upset with what is going on, it seems to be the only thing that is actually focused on. I think one of the most annoying things about Tate is that he praises himself for being raised by his feminist mother yet he is constantly rude to Foster. Like Really? As the reader, you get the most information on Foster and Tate but there is a core villain group. Yes it is a group. The villains are all so flat. A lot of people love villains because they have great backstories or they are super interesting but not these villains. They are so boring and I feel like they spend most of the story being quite useless. What is the motivation these villains have? This story starts off with a bang but than everything just sort of fizzles out. Not one is doing anything or taking any action. Foster and Tate decide that even though they fight and can't stand each other that they are going to start a romance now. NO IT IS NOT BELIEVABLE. At this point in the book, everything feels like it is forced.  This story has a great concept. I think it could have been quite enjoyable but it wasn't for me. I really wanted to love it but it is hard to love a book that makes you feel confused the entire tie you are reading it. All the characters were just so flat. I really loved the art but even that had some issues. A lot of the art didn't match the scenes in the book that it was supposed to be portraying. Also on top of that the art was usually a spoiler for  what was coming up in the book. It seemed like you would see the art before you would turn the page that had the action on it. (I am getting this from the ARC so definitely check out a finish copy because they may have changed this.) This book was not my favorite. This also could have been a me thing and maybe it just wasn't for me. If you are already a fan of P.C. Cast or Kristin Cast or both, then definitely check this book out and for your own opinion. I would love to hear someone else's thoughts. Especially if you loved the book. Thank you Wednesday books for a copy of The Dysastes for an honest review. “My 2002 Nightmare” (A ‘Scooby-Doo’ Essay)
Tumblr media
Based on the beloved cartoon from the 70’s, the live action Scooby-Doo (2002) was directed by Raja Gosnell and written by James Gunn and Craig Titley. The film, like its source material, centres around an anthropomorphic dog named Scoobert ‘Scooby’ Doo (Neil Fanning) and his companions in Mystery Incorporated. When the group splits after a typical villain bust, a mysterious case leads them all to Spooky Island, where they must not only figure out who is brainwashing the Island’s visitors but also patch together the relationships between one another. The main attraction of this movie for me is that it truly is a relic of its time. What is regarded critically as an objectively ‘bad’ film, the very essence of Scooby-Doo is a direct representation of not only pop culture, but of the state of films in 2002; so in the words of Velma (Linda Cardellini) herself, “let’s get jinkie with it”.
The fact that this film exists is a testament in itself. At the dawn of the new millennium, the world saw a rise in live action films based on comic books and cartoons. As traditional hand-drawn animation died down and the popularization of CGI occurred, it presented an opportunity for more fantastical characters and narratives to be told in live action. This led to cinematic gold such as The Cat in the Hat (2004), Catwoman (2004), and Garfield (2004). Not only the movies creation, but the cast in this film is very representative of the time. The main characters are played by the likes of Mathew Lillard, Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar whom were all arguably at the height of their popularity at the time. The movie’s villain is played by Rowan Atkinson (popular from his work as Mr. Bean) and even includes a cameo from Pamela Anderson in the opening scene. The soundtrack to the film even consists of artists such as Shaggy, Busta Rhymes, and Outkast whom were also very popular at the time.
Onto the film itself, Scooby-Doo utilises a lot of CGI, which has aged as not aged very well, as most films from that era have. Almost as bad as the Scorpion King (Dwayne Johnson) from The Mummy Returns (2001) or any scene in the Hulk (2003), the island monsters and even Scooby Doo himself are often so blatantly manufactured that it adds to the comedy. It’s at times worse when the camera uses shots where half of the screen is dedicated to an actor in the foreground yet also keeps the background CGI abominations in focus. Contrasting between the two it allows the audience to really comprehend Fred (Freddie Prinze Jr.)’s idea that “there’s no such thing as monsters”.
Tumblr media
The view on young people in this film is an interesting sight. It makes a point that the older generations can’t relate to younger generations, in the form of the re-educated tourists, who blurt out slang like “whattup dawg” and including “-izzle” in most words. The beginning sequence even includes Shaggy (Mathew Lillard) and Scooby’s escape on a skateboard; performing stunts and utilizing the factory as ramps. Most apparent is the character of Daphne (Sarah Michelle Gellar). She is seen in the film as the ‘it’ girl; pretty and fashionable with no basic common sense. Her costume and sense of style is directly reflective of what people truly thought at the time. Her form fitting jumpsuit, shapeless sundress, incredibly highlighted under eyes, and even her thin figure reflects what people saw as ‘ideal’ in that age.
This analysis could’ve been completely different. I could’ve easily talked about how basic and lacking in depth the plot is. I could’ve easily talked about the characters and how they are simply caricatures adding nothing to the story. I could’ve talked about the fact that at times it makes absolutely no logic; such as when after no outspoken consideration, the gang announces that the only black guy on the island (whom of course practices voodoo in a shack on the beach) is a suspect in their investigation. Instead I chose to mention Sarah Michelle Gellar’s undereye concealer because it honestly feels ridiculous to talk about the film in such a serious light. The movie doesn’t take itself seriously, so why should I? The best part of this movie is that it doesn’t try too hard – or even try at all, plainly because it doesn’t want to.
Tumblr media
Scooby-Doo could only be made in that age; a strange time where movies based on cartoons and comic books hadn’t figured it out yet. There was no formula or mass production, only what was given as the source material to bring it to life. I genuinely enjoy this film; not for the reason that it’s ‘so bad it’s good’ or that it’s simply white noise to shut my brain off to and watch. I laugh at the jokes, and have a good time watching it. It’s solely entertaining to me, which is often forgotten when contemplating film: they can exist purely to entertain. What is even expected of a Scooby-Doo film? A thrilling mystery? Realistic characters that reflect the psyche of someone investigating crime? This film has just enough of the campiness of its source material, and self-awareness that it really has no business attempting to be more than that. Just like a lot of the culture of 2002, Scooby-Doo doesn’t take itself too seriously – and neither should you.

Put Goodbye Christopher Robin on Your Must-See List
“Promise me you’ll always remember: You’re braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.” Christopher Robin to Winnie the Pooh
I was just a little girl when I first fell in love with the magic and simplicity of Winnie the Pooh. He seemed, at once, to be surrounded by friends who understood him, he had a special way of making the mundane magical, and the little bits of wisdom he and his motley crew imparted were ones that have continued to resonate with me as I grew up. They spoke of friendship, of gratitude, of stepping outside your comfort zone, embracing the stillness and seeing the beauty in self.
In fact, my very first best friend – way back in kindergarten – shared the name of my beloved Christopher Robin. In my imagination, he and I explored the Hundred Acre Woods, while the reality was our school sandbox and playground.

So, as you might speculate, it was with great interest that I immersed myself in Goodbye, Christopher Robin, a new release promising to share the story behind the stories we love.
I don’t know if I ever realized that A.A. Milne plucked Winnie and Kanga, Piglet and Rabbit, Tigger and Owl…not so much from his own imagination, but that of his son, Christopher Robin.
“We didn’t realize we were making memories, we were just having fun.” Christopher Robin
Young Christopher has always been real to me, but not REAL. And, in fact, without spoiling the plot, I must share that he is, in some ways beautifully real and in others a treasure of whatever direction your imagination takes.
The truth behind the Hundred Acre Woods and A.A. Milne’s authorship of our favorite bear is not as cuddly as you may hope. (or honestly, as I hoped.) A.A. Milne, portrayed by Domnhall Gleeson, is a traumatized veteran of World War I…unable to cope with the post traumatic stress that comes with the experience he both lived and witnessed. His wife, Daphne (Margot Robbie) admits to having a child to make her husband happy, wishes her fancy London life had not been interrupted and struggles to play the family role. She is clearly a detached mother, but also the one who brings the many Hundred Acre Woods characters to life for her toddler son. Piglet, Eyeore and Kanga are all gifts and tea-time companions that Daphne helped to voice, create and bring to life.
Piglet: “How do you spell love?” Pooh: “You don’t spell it, you feel it.”
There is a disheartening and painful disconnect between parent and child…a reminder, to me at least, to stop, play and appreciate their youth and heart before it is gone.

Unlike the whimsical world that finds Pooh and Piglet hand-in-hand, this version, set in the beautiful, but isolated, true Hundred Acre Woods, has moments of darkness, of heartbreak and loss. At its core, Goodbye Christopher Robin allows us to see how a child, ultimately raised by a nanny he adored (Kelly Macdonald), was exploited by his parents during and after the process of creating the series.
But, much like you and I always count on Pooh to be, it is honest.
I was honored to be a guest at the premiere and red carpet gala of Goodbye Christopher Robin in New York City this past week.
I spoke with composer, Carter Burwell, with Domhnall Gleeson (A.A. Milne) and with the ever-dimpled and charming Will Tilston (Christopher Robin). You can see my interview with Will below…but a quick preview – prepare to be awed by his grasp of the movie, his role and its effect on all people –  big and small.

In young Tillston’s words….the movie shares a window in to the world of Winnie the Pooh that many of us have never seen or heard, that one child’s childhood was sacrificed to bring joy to many children.

If for nothing else, watch to hear him tell me how he enjoyed the filming process, (“Oh my god…on a scale of 1 to 10? An eleven!”)
“How lucky am I to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard?”
Goodbye Christopher Robin opened in a few select cities on October 13th, but will open in many more on October 20th.

EARLY YEARS;
Ethan Wood was born and raised to do one thing and one thing only: play soccer.
HIGH SCHOOL;
COLLEGE;
SEASON ONE;
POST SEASON ONE
Ethan started footy training in the fall after the reality show ended, and he currently plays for Inter Miami CF, a team owned by David Beckham himself. He took up residence in Miami for the soccer season (come visit him !!  or come to one of his matches) and traveled the country with his team becoming the soccer star he always wanted to be.
With his first professional soccer season in the books, Ethan couldn’t resist returning to the reality show for another summer, much to his PR team’s dismay who are working to clean up with reputation, not add to it.
POGUES VS KOOKS
Ethan got into his fair share of Pogues vs Kooks scuffles back in high school. Nights filled with stupid boyish banter, booze, and blows. He likes to think he’s above all the rivalry now— playing pro ball and all—  but sometimes he still struggles to truly let go of the past and be the bigger person. He’s an athlete though and though, and rivalries are all just a part of the game.
WANTED CONNECTIONS;
the rival; To say Ethan is competitive is the understatement of the century and he and this person have a rivalry for the ages.
If anyone wants to give him a much deserved slap upside the head, let me know! [OPEN]
let’s make ‘em jealous; There’s no denying that Ethan and this person have chemistry. They are super flirty and all over each other, but in reality it’s all a rouse. They aren’t really into one another and are merely using each other to stir up some drama, cause a scene, and make the ones that really do catch their eyes jealous.  [OPEN]
the real bros; for those looking for a second muse, Ethan has two brothers xD. Julian and Damian (names can totally change!) He has one older brother who rejected the athlete/UNC/kook life leaving Ethan with the pressure to fill daddy’s soccer boots. They had a fall out and their relationship is shaky at best. Ethan also has a baby bro who he is definitely closer with. They get on rather typically through harmless banter and school boy shenanigans. He also has an innate protectiveness over him because he is older. [OPEN]
the tutor; Ethan isn’t the brightest bulb and only maintained good enough grades to stay on the soccer team. Though he was never the easiest student, Ethan has a great deal of respect for this person and appreciates all the work they put into him. Not to mention, is their BIGGEST hype-man if he ever runs into them outside his coursework. [CLOSED]
the workout partner; being a professional athlete means that Ethan is very into keeping in shape, even when he’s hungover. This could go two ways:1.) These two bonded over their love of the gym and they push each other to bring out the most of one another. It could even be a bit of rivalry, too! 2.) Ethan took this person under their wing (a trainer of sorts) and is helping them work out and keep healthy during the show. [CLOSED]
the almost maybe;  Ethan isn’t really into the whole boyfriend/girlfriend thing, a big supporter of the motto: no strings, just sex. But this one girl somehow managed to wiggle her way into his GASP, heart. To say it scares the shit out of Ethan is more than just an understatement and even though sparks flew Ethan isn’t sure he’s ready to give up his soccer star lifestyle for her just yet. This could be a new relationship that manifests on the show or one from the past that he is forced to revisit now that they are sharing a summer house together. [CLOSED]
the role model; Ethan didn’t really have many positive role models to look up to growing up, mainly just his father and his toxic masculinity. This person helps Ethan balance all that out and helps him deal with all those pesky emotions he was taught to keep suppressed inside in order to “be a man.” This person also keeps him in check and isn’t afraid to give him a much needed smack to the upside of the head when necessary [CLOSED]
Totally open to anything !! && would love to get Ethan into some more drama this season xD Basically building him up, so I can take him down. Whoops!
Shoot me a message if you’re interested in plotting.
