this is kinda just me angry rambling and i cannot for the life of me put my thoughts about this godforsaken album into words BUT!!!

midnights' biggest issue TO ME is its tired jack antonoff production being a backdrop for an album full of old stories we've already heard. reflecting on your past experiences is important and writing about some situations you already kinda wrote about on your previous records is not a crime. it is, however, important to make those new/updated experiences stand out. there are a few songs that do, like yoyok or lavender haze or bejeweled or midnight rain, and most songs offer new perspectives, but it's still feels unfinished almost.

the thought is there! but whyyyy do so many songs sound like they'd fit right in with tracks on her other albums? you might say, "well, that's the point! this record is a collection of old memories, carefully picked and displayed for our viewing (and listening) pleasure, so of course it's gonna remind us of albums we've heard before!"

and here's a radical thought: what if i don't fucking want more lover tracks? what if 18 was more than enough? is it weird to want your favourite artist to continue down the path of experimenting with her sound/lyricism instead of resorting to past experiences she already wrote entire albums about (looking at you, MAROON.) and old ass boom booms/reverbs/synths that jack fuckass antonoff has to offer.

I totally missed Nate Carter as Taxidermist (and earlier, EAM). It wasn't for lack of looking, but I tried the shop and the Macduffs' and the cemetery, right place / wrong time I guess. This is partly a symptom of me taking the stairs in now, to try and get to the ballroom more quickly, so I don't even know who is working the elevator.
