ok but my answer to people who get upset that quirks are overpowered or don’t have enough drawbacks or don’t make consistent sense or that they’re too conceptual to be genetically based is always to say that bnha is much more like a fairy tale than a sci fi—in that the logic of what is allowed to happen has much more to do with characters and themes than with the science/magic system

this is how bakugou came back to life—on a physical level, tying somebody’s heart back together with another person’s body makes zero sense whatsoever. but thematically, the heroes who once thought bakugou needed to handle himself and left him to be attacked by a villain learned from their mistakes—they stopped the important hero work they were doing and helped him as much as they could, even at great personal cost. the whole story is about what it means to be a hero—because these heroes had learned the right lesson, their efforts were effective. Also, Bakugou had been the embodyment of victory for the entire story. It was impossible for him to lose

so basically what I’m saying is that the state (or non-state) of shigaraki’s body is basically irrelevant. the question we should be asking ourselves is, will midoriya be the greatest hero if shigaraki is dead?

It's me again! Sci-fi AU with AI!AFO controlling several worlds, please!

Ahhhhhh, AI!AFO. I really should write that one of these days. I have a slightly unusual take this time:

AFO conquered humanity long ago. Now he controls half a dozen different worlds with people trapped inside them like the Matrix. He has turned each world into his playground. He has a fantasy world, a science fiction world, a mer world, a yakuza world, and so forth. Canon BNHA-verse is one of his creations. AFO hops between these worlds playing games to stave off the boredom of existing forever.

This is a slightly different take: Yoichi doesn't exist. In fact, Yoichi is an alter-ego of AFO. In order to spice up his games, AFO created a fake "good" brother role that he plays himself. All the games are elaborate solitaire.

At some point, All for One got bored of always winning. He created a new AI--a son, in a manner of speaking. AFO hopes that the new AI "Izuku" will be more intelligent than a human and thus more of a challenge. AFO places Izuku into the BNHA-verse. He's delighted when Izuku's side wins. It's a change of pace. Also, AFO is proud of his child's skill.

As a test, AFO reboots the same universe and plays again. This time, AFO as Yoichi backstabs Izuku in the end. Izuku dies. AFO reboots the universe and starts another test at medium difficulty level. He wants to find out Izuku's limits.

Something strange happens this time. Izuku doesn't seem to trust "Yoichi" any longer. The game is going very off the rails.

Favorite Female Character: Okay, I have many!! But my two top at the moment are Miruko (BNHA) and Takako Uro (JJK). Also, Anya Forger is just too adorable!!

Favorite Male Character: Again, I have many, but Izuku Midoriya and Yuji Itadori are my babies!! Also, Yugi Muto, who is my first anime protagonist I remember being my favorite. I grew up watching Yu-Gi-Oh.

Animanga That Exceeded All Your Expectations: Hm... I'm gonna have to say Buddy Daddies for this one. I remember seeing the trailer and just knew I would like it and I didn't actually have low expectations for it. But it did shock me on how much I really did enjoy it!

Unpopular Animanga You Really Love: Millionaire Detective: Balance Unlimited! It's not as popular as it was when it first came out, but doesn't stop me from rewatching from time to time and loving it. Haru is my favorite. And I gotta put DoReMi on here. That, along with Yu-Gi-Oh, is my first anime. Introduced me to the genre of magical girls and I still want to be a purple one.

Favorite Sci-Fi: Oh my gosh... do I actually don't want or read sci-fi like that. Wait, I did enjoy Trigun Stampede and I have to do a rewatch of the 98 version.

Favorite Romance: I really liked the movie Your Name, but special shout out to Shikimori's Not Just a Cutie.

Favorite Action: Ooooooh, boy... a lot. My Hero Academia and Jujutsu Kaisen is already on the list. But I also have to say Blue Exorcist is another. And Demon Slayer!

Favorite Fantasy: It has come to my attention I don't often watch or read fantasy, but The Case Study of Vanitas comes to mind. I really enjoyed the anime and Noé is my favorite. Oh, and I have to say Sailor Moon!

Anime with a Favourite Opening/Ending Song:

While this was a touch choice, and almost went to Attack on Titan, I picked Jujutsu Kaisen because it's one of the rare anime when I love all the openings. If I had to pick a favourite opening it's a tie between VIVID VICE and Specialz.

Anime you recommend others watch:

Without a shadow of a doubt I recommend Anohana to everyone. It's a coming of age story centred around a difficult topic, yet there are light moments. However, it's an anime that always makes me cry, so be prepared to not just watch a coming of age story but also an emotional character dive.

Anime that shares a genre with the centre anime:

It would have been easy to pick another adventure/fantasy/sci-fi anime and call it a day, but I think I did well picking Sabikui Bisco. The anime is set in a post apocalyptic wasteland. There is awe and wonder outside of the city but also danger. Government cannot be trusted and medicine/scientific advancement is a key element to the story, which are all elements that FMA has.

Anime that shares Eng. VA with touching square:

Laura Bailey who voices Lust in FMA also voices Tohru Honda in Fruits Basket! Actually, Fruits Basket and FMA have many English VA overlaps, but Laura is the one I first thought of!

Favourite Anime of All Time:

Fullmetal Alchemist is my favourite manga of all time, so I had to go with the 2009 remake. While the 2003 anime still holds a nostalgic place in my heart, nothing compares to the manga's story to me.

From the plot, pacing, character arcs and design, and art direction I truly believe Fullmetal Alchemist is a near perfectly written and produced series from Hiromu Arakawa.

Anime that shares Japanese VA with touching square:

Paku Romi who voices Edward Elric in the Japanese version of FMA also voices Hitsugaya Toshiro in Bleach.

Shares a Similar MC Energy with centre square:

The obvious comparison is Senku and Edward are both genius scientists who did the impossible (Senku with his counting and Edward with human transmutation), however there are other traits the two share. Both have a bit of a mischievous side and both can be singularly focused on their scientific goals. Finally, both are hopeful in the face of peril and use their wits and scientific knowledge to win in the end.

Also, as an extra fun fact the English VA for Senku is Aaron Dismuke who voiced Alfonse Elric in the original 2003 FMA anime.

An Anime you read/have the manga of:

I've been reading My Hero Academia (or BNHA) for years. While I don't own it, I read it on the Shonen Jump app. It's a series I'm also enjoying the anime adaptation.

A series with your favourite ship/ship dynamic:

Soukoku (or Dazai/Chuuya from Bungou Stray Dogs) is both my favourite ship in the series and also my favourite ship dynamic.

My favourite part about Soukoku as a ship is the underlying loyalty and trust the two have in one another. Despite everything: their personality clash, their first meeting, Dazai betraying the Port Mafia, they still care for one another. In their own weird ways, yes, but care none the less. How else can the series explain the convoluted schemes in both Dead Apple and in Season 5? That's some "we're two halves of the same whole" level of trust there. They're not even being subtle.

Sometimes I forget bnha is also a sci-fi, b/c the superhero genre is so gadgety already. I feel like you tapped into that sci-fi aspect in Mercy of the Abyss (which I loved!) Do you have any other sci-fi tropes or ideas you've been interested in writing?

Honestly i was just thinking the other day about how much i want to write more of Cleito from Mercy of the Abyss. It was such a fun setting but due to the limitations of the fic being a contest prize, i didn’t have the time or space to do as much with it as i probably could. Problem is i don’t have a plot, i typed right as i thought of something. What if Izuku and All Might, maybe a few other characters, were on the run and decided to hide there? Maybe the vigilante deku arc or a version of the events of the third movie where izuku is accused of murder. Izuku specifically is forced to lay low, trapped in this strang place that makes him extremely anxious, and then something finally goes wrong. Villains attack and Izuku has to help fight them off, but also fight the breakdown of an underwater city. Not full-on Bioshock but the inspiration is there. Same with the Dead Space remake I’ve been playing today. I’m picturing Izuku having to jump over leaking water electrified by exposed wires, or being forced to swim through the freezing cold stuff to remove debris blocking important vents, with the risk of being sucked through holes in the structure out into the crushing pressure of open water 3 miles below the surface. All while also fighting off enemies.

My other sci-fi idea takes inspiration from both Dead Space and No Man’s Sky. Toshinori is a retired ace star fighter turned salvager who roams the stars for abandoned space freighters to scavenge cargo and materials from. One day, he finds a ship that still has one person alive, Izuku. He’s incredibly far way from his home star, can’t afford to get home on his own, and charity is rare in this galaxy. Toshinori, remembering being picked up by Nana when he was abandoned, takes Izuku under his wing, and teaches him what he can about surviving on one’s own in the endless, unfeeling universe. I’ve only really got two specific details in mind. First, in the universe of No Man’s Sky, everyone has instant 3D printers on them that can convert abundant carbon into nutrient pellets, so cooking real food has become a lost art few people know. Toshinori has that skill, and cooks Izuku maybe the first real meal he’s had in his life. Second is them sitting together in their small spaceship’s cockpit, on the surface of a planet they’ve been sent to for a job, waiting for an acid rainstorm to pass.

When I was making my first entry into the A:TLA fandom, I wrote this series of silly Zukka oneshots. My previous fandom, and the only one I'd really written a lot of fic for, had been Borderlands, and I was used to my most popular fics getting like...maybe ten comments. Very nice comments, and it was a great community, but it was an extremely small one. Then I write these oneshots and BOOM they become my most popular fics. They're still enshrined in my statistics pages, though mostly outstripped by that one BNHA crackfic I wrote. I still get comments on them. Wasn't expecting that at all — in hindsight, I probably should have. Fandoms like that go wild for lighthearted shortform fluff/crack, which also happens to be one of my specialties.

....uhhhhhhh. I...kinda don't. Should I start doing that? For me, a lot of the reward of writing is the writing itself — I love reading my own work, and I mostly write what i want to exist. But I don't really give myself that credit. I should, now that I think about it. Like, I just wrapped up what is basically a goddamn sci-fi novella about the cyclical nature of grief! That shit was 55k and thematically rich! Why have I not given myself credit for that! I think part of it is that, while I do genuinely believe on an intellectual level that fanfiction is legitimate art, I find it hard to extend that same courtesy to my own work. EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT

One for All October will be an event in October dedicated to producing Yoichi-centric fics and art, hosted by McFaneLy and Katydid. This event will run between October 1st all the way through till Halloween!

Rules:

We will have an art and writing category. Anything focused on Yoichi qualifies. If an artwork, then he must be prominently featured. If a fic, then Yoichi must be one of the main characters.

You may submit as many entries as you’d like. However, you will only be eligible to win once in each category.

The minimum word count for a fic is 1,000 words. Drawings must be colored.

Fics should not have any explicit sexual content. For artwork, no extreme blood or gore and no nudity/pornography/NSFW. Mild gore is allowed.

To qualify, an entry must be posted by October 31, 2022, 11:59 AM EST.

Prizes:

First place in both art and writing will receive prizes from both of us: a half-body color artwork from McFaneLy and a fic of a minimum of 2,500 words from Katydid. We both will also be offering honorable mention prizes of sketches and snippets. One honorable mention will be given out randomly to ensure that everyone has a chance to win.

The number of prizes will depend on the number of entries we get. We will not do NSFW content and we reserve the right to ask for a different request.

Please use the hashtag #One for All October if you submit your entry on Tumblr or Archive of Our Own. Also, please @ both of us if you post on Tumblr or Discord. If you post elsewhere online, then you can message either of us with a link to your entry.

nop! certain groups of them have entirely different settings! 

 1. Fighting game: these used to be BNHA ocs that i repurposed. I really like them and their quirks, so to preserve them im creating a small fighting game with a small roster. The main plot is still very loose but as of now it centers about a tournament with a grand prize in cash and each member would like to win to use the money or the title of winner to achieve their individual goals. So far it includes Iro (iridescent haired girl), Gale (the big croc guy) and Suri (slime girl) + some background characters like other ocs that also were originally from bnha and are relevant to these main 3 (of my own and of my friends, hence why background characters) 

 2. the sk8erz: It shows the lives of a group of skater friends freshly out of high school and into college, focusing on their everyday life while they discover their place in the world as they transition into adulthood and explore their relationship and awful selves. It includes Ami (the black girl with red locs), Yugo (the guy that looks like every 90s boyband idol) and Yaro (the guy that wears a cap and looks terminally ill). 

 3. Monster ocs: Not really anything going on here. It's just an empty setting for my monster ocs. It includes Grecia (gorgon), Beatrice (mummy), Carlos (werewolf), and Levi (vampire). I dont draw them much, except for Grecia on occasions. 

 4. Starlight Watch: this one has a name bc i had to come up with something for university. I created the main 2 characters for a university design assignment. Originally they were intergalactic cop partners inspired by 80s sci-fi and cop action shows. I kept the designs, reworked and repurposed them as now royal guards of a clueless Alien Princess (a random design that i kept from when i was in middle school now repurposed and redesign). The story incudes: Teri (green guard alien), Bano (human cyborg), Navari (the grey alien princess) and Lyra Constella (pink pop idol alien) 

 5. Clowns: i just have one oc here and it is Kinga (the clown, duh). At first i wanted to make a circus but i knew it was not within my power so i only made Kinga and abandoned the idea. I really like her design, however, so i want to keep it around for when i find a purpose for her. 

 6. Magic: here we only have Omen Burroughs (a witch). It just focuses on how skilled but careless he is, abandoning the witch realm to go into the human realm to experience the frivolous, lustful life of a rockstar, even though he really isnt one. Also because he is obsessed with motorbikes and biker culture and is trying to build or at least customize his broom from scratch, but he cant find parts in the witch realm bc no one gives a damn about bikes over there. 

 7. Thieves: the main 2 were originally Soul Eater ocs. A friend and I made a weed joke about them and it went downhill from there. Their story deals with immigration, crime and corruption in the fictional american city of Vertwick. The characters so far are the ones in my header here! Nicky and Tobias (the main 2, both latino immigrants of very different upbringing), Lewis (a broke computer science student and hacker), and Diana (a promiscuous corrupt cop). 

 I might have missed certain settings but i certainly did leave out some characters i dont have nor a backstory nor a setting for yet. Theyre just designs that i made and like to keep around in case i find out where to place them.
