So where's the HalGuyKyle essay? 👀

Okay okay okay

This got long so I'm going to just

So the thing about them is that they each build on a part of something that the other two lack when they're in a relationship together. Kyle and Hal are too indirect - Hal's not one for talking things out, and I can think of at least three examples of Kyle just happy to float along in relationships even when he KNOWS there are issues. Guy is a metaphorical battering ram of honesty. He won't let you hide things. He's indelicate, and he hates secrets, and you know exactly where you stand with him. Kyle and Hal can dance in circles forever, but Guy will plow through that circle. More than just forcing them to confront their truths, Guy is a force of motion. He's something that keeps moving forward, not letting the other two fall into stagnation, and I think Kyle and Hal would both be attracted to how solid he finds himself, how he's unflinching in his conviction. Guy knows who he is, while Kyle and Hal (especially Hal) go through like three identity crises a year. I wouldn't call him simple, but being with him is uncomplicated. It's not always easy, sure, but no matter what, he's devoted, he's sure of himself, he's sure of who they are. Guy is like a scaffold, or a guiding light. He's solid and dependable. You always know what you're getting.

Meanwhile, Guy and Kyle together feels like. They feel like the most stable twosome of the group, but maybe I'm biased because I'm still fresh off of binging all the guykyle fics lmao. They're devoted to each other - remember how Guy went red because Kyle died? That moment lives in my head forever. But I don't think Kyle can really... get the full complexity of Guy in the way that Hal can. And it's not through lack of trying, or deliberate ignorance (though Kyle does have a habit of putting his partners on pedestals), but simply just. Not from being there. Hal and Guy have such a long history together. They're the ones who've seen each other at their worst. I haven't gotten to the point where I see a lot of Kyle and Guy's dynamic together in the comics, but they seem to lift each other up. They seem to bring out the best versions of each other, but sometimes that's not what you need. And I think Hal has an easier time of seeing all of Guy, of knowing all he is. The interesting thing about Guy is that he seems to know the people around him - of how and why they act, their motivations, the things that drive them - better than he knows himself. And it's interesting because Hal doesn't tend to focus a lot on others, either, but he does have an intrinsic knowledge of Guy. They're similar enough that Hal barely has to try in order to Perceive him, but they differ in that Hal actually does introspection. So he's aware of how his own brain works, he overthinks his own motivations and what drives him it's that parallax induced trauma to the point of landing on an ouroboros of recursive thought loops. He Knows Guy, much as he wishes he didn't sometimes, and it can be refreshing to be around someone who you don't have to be perfect around. Kyle is just... so good. He makes everyone want to be good. When you're around him, you want to be the good person he knows you are.

And I could write ANOTHER essay on how Kyle and Hal were written to be complete opposites of each other, but the circumstances of them becoming a lantern were so similar. They both started off completely alone. There was no one to guide them at the start of their careers, no one to help them. Hal was the first, at least the first in earth, yes Alan was technically the first but he didn't have the corps so I'm not including him in this count. And when Kyle was GL, there were no corps. They were gone. They were completely destroyed. Kyle was the only lantern for a DECADE. Well, a decade in real time so like, probably two years in universe. And I don't think anyone else quite understands that particular type of loneliness. Even when the corps were back, Kyle and Hal are the ones who are like. Idk if exceptional is the right word but they keep getting singled out? Like Hal as the spectre, white lantern Kyle, etc. It's that sense of belonging yet not belonging all at once, and they both feel like the other is too good for them and it's like how by being on opposite sides of a spectrum, you're closer to each other than the folks in the middle. They don't seem like they should get each other, but they DO. When one of them says "I give up," the other one is there, telling him no, and holding out his hand. Kyle brought Hal BACK FROM THE DEAD and Hal brought Kyle back from parallax!! They SHARED THE SAME MIND. If Hal and Guy see and acknowledge the dark, ugly parts of each other, Kyle and Hal have metaphorically touched hearts. They've seen each others soul and they deem it worthy. Adding Hal to Guykyle is like adding salt to taffy. It adds depth to something that's already good. I guess this metaphor only works if you like saltwater taffy.

AND while I love halguy, they're as liable to break bones as they are to make out. They've both internalized different aspects of toxic masculinity and they seem like the most volatile combination. When they're good, they're great, but when they're not good they're BAD. They're terrible. Hal went to the school of internalizing your feelings until they all burst forth in a terrible flood like a tsunami that destroys everything (Parallax) (a trait he also unfortunately passed down to Roy, both of them spiral HARD), and Guy has an unnerving habit of taking the energy you give him and then amplifying it. Usually by making it worse. Fortunately for them, Kyle is a diplomat. He walks into a gun fight and he convinces them to put down the guns, and idk how he does it because he's also impetuous and short tempered and sort of an asshole tbh but SOMEHOW HE DOES IT. If anyone can make Hal and Guy get along, it's him. Also lbr, he sees Hal and Guy getting testy and snapping at each other and he goes 👀 and tries to insert himself in the middle and redirect their anger to something more fun. He's attracted to passionate people, and Hal and Guy are brimming with passion. He's also so horny, and Hal and Guy are. Like. Just look at them.

Kyle always jokes that of course he fell for Conner; he’s always had a thing for California blondes. Conn rolls his eyes. But he does have a soft spot for California, especially San Fran but he does think California does raise some grand heroes lmao. (Man, I was thinking about a dumb one shot AU; where in that “Wandavision-esque” AU where Kyle unnentially create a reality where Hal never falls and I was, like lmao what if he invisions himself as Conn’s civilian boyfriend, pfff) Okay Conn being shown baby pictures and pictures of Kyle from when he was younger from Maura much too Kyle’s utter horror is so funny. Tbh Kyle’s normality is so a feature not a bug, like sometimes I do really think compared to some of his friends he is the superhero equivalent to not jumping the gun sometimes like the “why not just check if southwest has any flights,” if you’ve seen John mulaney’s delta airlines skit. So yeah, maybe I am implying Conn is a bit attracted to how normal Kyle is for a superhero, I don’t blame him. (I also have the idea that it’s one of the first times he’s seen pictures of Alex Dewitt, since like I do hc Alex and Kyle were high school friends and went to the same Catholic school and were both ironically quite art kids).

Okay that be so freaking funny Jess and Kyle going partying “for intel” and getting hammered because they haven’t had fun in like forever and wake up with the boys staring down at them like “for the mission Hal, that’s what you said,” / “god can you save the lecture for when my head isn’t a Gonna explode.” As someone with an accident no matter how you try to train yourself it to have it, it will split out when you stop trying so like yeah, there are just some words Kyle can not say “correctly” and come out weirdly accident like “scones”

OH! I do think Mia and Kyle would get along, and once again Ollie is alone in his anti Kyle camp, tbh. But I also imagine Mia busting into Conn’s apartment only to find Conn and Kyle actually making out and being so dramatic about it screaming “my eyes! My eyes! I need bleach!” And Conn will never live it down.

Conn wiping his thumb aganist Kyle’s cheek after helping him up after being hit out of the sky, “you okay, pretty boy?” / “doubt I’m pretty after that hit” / “your always pretty, to me anyway.”

Aww yeah that’s what’s been going wrong Kyle hasn’t been dating blonds lol. Ooh yes Kyle’s little world. But Conn is there with him. Would be even cooler/angstier if right White Lantern Kyle did this. So right his subconscious pulls together a wanda vision world after he leaves the source wall. 

Everyone is all better. Hal never was Parallax. Guy was never a red lantern. Just right everything is chill but also he’s boyfriends with Connor Hawke. 

But then say Oblivion comes in and fucks this up. And everyone is back and Hal, Guy, and John went to go talk to Kyle and he just his memories of Connor are getting fuzzy again and he can’t even remember why it was him in the first place. and just angst you know. 

it is for certain a feature. like going to sit with Kyle in coffee shops and have dinner with his mom is just so chill. Compared to you know overly spicy chilly and chaos as people run in and out. Conn loves that too and he knows Kyle love the chaos of the arrowfam too. 

Lol Kyle being the voice of reason like “hey he shouldn’t talk to you like that” about the Guardians and the Human Lanterns are like “no he shouldn’t!” 

Honestly the Guardians are trying to hard to control the Human Lanterns and they just can’t. but they know there is no better four to complete the highest stake jobs. 

I do like the idea that Alex and Kyle were childhood friends too. They grew up together they knew each others hopes and dreams. It just I love them. 

Jess and Kyle on a planet agreeing to get info in the party scene. And it’s like you know the Hangover. Jess and Kyle have to track down the other lanterns because they are most certainly not where they started. And Kyle really wants to have his shoes back before he has to face Hal’s hands on his hips glare. 

Lol Mia just busting in the window and Roy just walking in the door and immediately covering Lian’s eyes. 

“Hey you two little ones around here” Roy shouts

“Not until six seconds ago Harper” Kyle grumbles but Conn is already getting up to greet his niece and punch his brothers in the arm maybe harder than needed. 

That is what Im talking about. That’s Dinah Lance’s influence through and through. Conn is always dropping lines at exactly the right time.

What do the entire bat family thoughts on Keith and the rest of the Voltron team, including the Alteans? Zarkon? Haggar?

okok so I’m going to go on with assuming that Shiro is already part of batfam (the whole AU where he was a batkid before joining the Garrison and going on the Kerberos mission).

Bruce: I think he would pretty much adopt Keith; he has all the qualifications for a troubled batkid, and he’s good with hand to hand combat and he doesn’t use guns. He would adore Lance, Pidge & Hunk, but would probably grow annoyed by them at some points (because Bruce can’t handle happiness and fun heheh) and he would seriously respect Allura. At first he would be skeptical of her (Selina Kyle vibes) but he would trust her when he sees how much Shiro loves & trusts her and how she’s badass. Coran would be like a second Alfred to him, tbh.

Dick: tbh some days Dick just gets really fed up with Keith. He can barely handle Jason and Damian––last he needs is another snappy, quick-tempered kid who gets offended by everything. But most days, Dick loves Keith and treats him like another one of his younger siblings: with love, patience and scolding. I think he’d fall in love with Allura tbh, then pout because she & Shiro are already a thing (but he’d be really happy for Shiro because if he deserves a someone amazing, then it’s Allura). He and Lance would be good friends I think, because Dick can appreciate when someone is trying really hard to lighten the mood and ease the tension in the room (usually that’s his role, so he’s happy that Lance seems to seriously help).

Jason: would be such an asshole to Keith, because it’s so fun. Whenever Keith makes a sad comment about how he’s half-galra or something, Jason will say “wow, must suck. I only died and came back to life” just to piss him off (and Keith keeps getting pissed off, every time). He and Lance wouldn’t get along well at first, because his comments are too sharp and he ends up hurting Lance’s feelings… until they kinda realize they both have some pent up thoughts about how they just don’t fit in the family and how everyone else seems to be better than them in the eye of the leader, and Lance begins to understand Jason’s sarcasm and dry humour, and they get along really well. He’d respect Allura and keep calling Coran “Alfred” for jokes. I also think he would secretly love Hunk’s hugs, but would never admit to it.

Tim: Tim is BEST FRIENDS with Hunk & Pidge!!! He would be good friends with Lance and Keith, too, but not quite their best friend. He loves to nerd over tech & ideas with Hunk and Pidge, he loves to listen to them explain how the Lions work and what Pidge felt when she felt every atom of Green, etc. He and Pidge stay up late at night, living off caffeine, and Hunk brings them some of the tasty food he cooks because “guys, you need to eat actual food.” 

Stephanie: Adores Allura, and eventually becomes her mentor and teaches her some kickass moves in combat. She’s always in awe at Allura’s powers, and they become very close, like sisters. Allura opens up to her about how losing her entire planet and kingdom was so devastating. Stephanie would also like Lance and would keep giving him adorable nicknames (and plays along with his corny pick up lines)… they both know they’ll never be a thing, but they enjoy making everyone else uncomfortable by playing corny flirty kids. I think she would also be sort of a big sister for Pidge, and they’d play video games together and she would happily listen to Pidge rant about technology and space. And Keith––I’m not actually sure how Steph would feel about him. I think she have a similar relationship with him to Dick’s.

Damian: okay so I have this whole headcanon that Dami & Lance become best friends because Lance treats the kid like a kid, despite his bratty remarks and the fact that he speaks like an old man from the early 20th century. He spoils Dami, always buying him ice cream and inviting him to play soccer/basketball/tennis/video games etc with them and he never gets angry when Damian is too good––instead, he tells the kid how good he is. At first Dami brushes it off with narcissistic remarks, but it later means a lot to him. Eventually, he loosens up and feels so comfortable around Lance that he opens up to him about his nightmares, fears, and how despite being the bloodson, he fears that he will never make his father & Dick proud and that Tim will never like him. 

As for Keith, I think he would be a tiny bit jealous of him because Shiro & Dad loves Keith, Dick fights super well alongside Keith, Jason actually jokes more with Keith (and teases him more), and Tim actually likes him, despite his snappy responses. So at first Dami avoids Keith, always feeling like he’s the new star of the show… but one day Keith challenges him to a swordfight, and softly laughs when Damian nearly kicks his ass. They become sword buddies, and eventually good friends/brothers.

As for Zarkon & Haggar, I think pretty much all of them would hate them because 1) they’re bad guys and 2) what they did to Shiro
