How are we feeling about ensekai’s emu3 translation!!! (I’m mad)
(if you remember the 3 whole posts i made when asahi got de-gayed on EN you'll know i am mad too and that this is probably going to get long)
i don't like to be too cynical but it was so obvious that they were going to change that line, i had a feeling since the event first released on JP and after the incident with Asahi where I went through and tracked down multiple other examples of EN removing queer subtext it became clear to me that in no way shape or form was "emu-chan really loves nene-chan" making it to EN without getting changed. what i didn't expect was them changing Nene's line after Luka's comment, which actually makes this whole situation far worse than many of their other instances of toning down queer subtext.
for anyone who isn't aware of what happened, in chapter 5 of the current Emu event, there's a scene where Nene, Rui and the Virtual Singers are talking about what would cheer Emu up. The vsingers all talk about how much Emu loves spending time with Nene, leading to the following exchange
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you look for them, any fan TL of this scene will be something similar to this:
Luka: ...Fufu. Emu-chan really loves Nene-chan, doesn't she? Nene: Th-that's nothing special...
EN's official translation is this:
Tumblr media
So what's the issue? I'll start with Luka's part. In the original text, she uses the word daisuki, which can mean to "like a lot" or "love". It's a word you will see frequently in the idol/idol-adjacent genre of games, due to its ambiguity in that it can be read as either platonic or romantic when used towards a person, and often will be used in ambiguous situations so that it's harder to confirm the writers' intentions either way. so here, fans of the emu/nene ship could view the fact that emu loves spending her time with nene as more on the romantic side, but people who don't like the ship could view it as platonic and move on.
while they didn't translate daisuki directly, Luka's line still works, and still contains the ambiguity that works as ship tease in the original text. it's a perfectly fine localisation that still conveys the original intent. despite that, there is something to be said about EN's consistent refusal to translate daisuki as love in most instances when it's not used on An/Kohane (but then again, EN has literally teased An/Kohane on their twitter account so is it all that surprising?).
Here's some examples:
Aibou no koto ga daisuki de / he loves his partner -> he cares about his partner very much (The Power of Unity chapter 7 when Kaito is comparing Arata to Akito and Toya)
HARUKA-CHAN, DAISUKI DAYOOOO!!! / HARUKA-CHAN, I LOOOOOVEEE YOU!!! -> You're the best!!! (Dear Me, As I Was Back Then chapter 4 when minori is at an ASRUN concert. this one isn't actually that great of a localisation)
Honachan no koto daisuki dakara. Kore de iinda yo. / I love Honachan, so this is fine. -> I want what's best for her. And this is it. (Leo/need main story chapter 14 after Saki tells Honami she won't bother her anymore)
Minna daisuki de - taisetsuna tomodachi na no / I love them all - they're my dearest friends -> They're all amazing, and very dear to me. (Leo/need main story chapter 17. this isn't good either)
What's particularly amusing about that last one is that there's a second official translation for it that I assume was done by JP staff (since EN never promoted doing the Journey to Bloom subs like they did back when they provided subs for Petit SEKAI) that actually keeps the word daisuki as love.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeah. I love all my friends - and they mean the world to me.
It's a better localisation than the official EN team one.
Questionable localisation choices aside, Luka's line is fine and is actually in line with the original. The issue with this localisation very much lies with Nene's part, because that is an entirely new line.
In the original text, Nene's "that's just normal" or "that's nothing special" or however you choose to TL it, is meant to be her questioning Luka's statement, since all the things that the other vsingers said that Emu liked were pretty normal things like going shopping and playing video games with nene. To Nene, these things are normal activities for them to do together, so she gets embarrassed by the fact that Luka concludes from that information that Emu loves Nene. When I dissect it like that I think you can really tell what the writers were going for here lol.
"That's just us being friends" does still convey the idea that Nene thinks these activities aren't anything out of the ordinary and she isn't sure why the vsingers are picking these out as some of Emu's favorite things to do, but it's very different from the original line. "But those are just normal things we do together" is something I just came up with on the spot, but it's a lot closer to the original text and still conveys the same meaning. The fact they changed the line to "that's just us being friends" is, honestly, not even subtle that they're covering up queer subtext. The original scene was very clearly written in as ship tease, and EN mentioning "friends" for no reason, especially since the word nor anything close to it was not used in the original, is instantly a red flag because it's like the go-to for queerbaiting and censorship. This was intentional. There was no need for them to specify that the relationship is platonic, Luka's part is ambiguous for a reason so that fans can view it how they like.
Tumblr media
Just to top all this off, here's Rin's original line just before that Luka+Nene interaction:
Oh, and! And! She said that playing games with Nene-chan is also super fun!
And here's Rin's line from the official EN translation:
Tumblr media
That's not the same thing, but even more weirdly, the incorrect part (super fun->really loves) is a correct translation for the part changed in Luka's line. So, they can do it, they are willing to say "really loves", just not in the right places. Maybe because Rin's part is less personal than Luka's part? It's strange actually, this isn't the first time they've done this either. Off the top of my head I can think of an example from Shiho's Varied Kindness 2* story where they translated the word "suki" as really loves, despite that being much stronger than the original word used (and the fact that daisuki is used a lot in the Leo/need stories and it's incredibly rare if not entirely unknown for them to translate it correctly).
It's not subtle that they're trying to remove implications of the characters possibly being queer, they did it in curtain call and they did it in walk on and on, and multiple times before then too. And considering some of the content in this year's events and the amount of times they say daisuki alone, it's gonna keep happening. honestly i hate the fact that i keep trying to justify the translations in these posts. these translations are intentional. what happened in the curtain call translation back in october says enough. when a character who uses explicitly romantic language towards another guy passes as a straight character in the translation you know they're doing it on purpose.
oh and once again, it's only the EN server that has this issue. The scene in question was translated almost word-for-word on the TW and KR servers.
read fan translations. they're better than what EN gives us and people put a lot of effort into them.

story of us
pairing: suna x reader
the story of ur relationship <3; alternatively (more) dating sunarin headcanons but this time is somewhat of an order and talks good and bad 2K+ worth lol
a/n: i had more planned but half of these have been sitting in my notes for months and its kinda fucking long already bc he lives rent free!!!
warnings: uh the usual aged up (in ur 20s time skip type beat), language, yeah
Meeting
Now when y’all met suna was not looking to love at all. That man was just living his life and so where you. The two of you pretty much meet through komori. You’re a friend and it’s his birthday so him and a few of his friends go out for drinks bc why not. Young hot pretty financially stable v-ball players. Nah no ones there for any type of hookups literally just there celebrating a great guy.
They rent out a section at a relatively nice bar tbh. Not the cheapest and you can actually hear conversation. But also not a super expensive one where the patrons are middle aged with jazz music and the occasional track to relive “youth.” Komori’s a sweetie and will come outside to get you when you text that you’re there. You’ve met washio and ofc sakusa Before so you greet them casually then you turn and there’s Suna and a few others you haven’t met.
That greeting isn’t anything special I promise. Just “hey I’m so and so” and vice versa. It’s one of those meetings where you just think “he’s cute” but it’s such a fleeting thought. Y’all don’t even really talk that first night tbh. At the next practice Suna mentions offhandedly that he didn’t know komori was dating someone and komori is like: huh? Yeah sorry. I love (Y/N) and all but were just friends. Suna just shrugs not really caring to be honest until Komori just asks what did he think of you.
“Don’t really remember much man. Seemed cool though” he didn’t think he’d really see you again. Yeah you were close enough to have been at Komori’s birthday but if that was his first time ever meeting you, he figured you weren’t from around there are present very much. Yeah he was wrong.
Suddenly you were on Komori’s snap story more often, or maybe he’d just been noticing more. Too bad he couldn’t even remember your name 💀. Then it turned into you occasionally popping up where he was. He’d been told your name at least 5 times already but wouldn’t remember it the next day. Whenever he’d see you again he’d get a strained look like: “what is this mf name again” just laugh and tell him again bby.
That changed at some random house party by another mutual friend you two apparently had? You two were the only people just around the fire pit trying to catch some warmth in the chilly night. He’s probably just on his phone head bobbing his head to the muffled music from inside. And you’re just like “remember my name yet?” All jokingly. This sparks the tiniest bit of interest in him and he lets out a low chuckle and just admits “not at all.” I also feel like this is the first time he really looks at you and he’s like 🤨, wait you’re actually kinda cute.
That night y’all just kinda talk and vibe. The conversation comes easy as you two jump back and forth from talking about the music playing to sneakers which he brings up to stuff that you like. He’s actually really easy to talk to. So easy that u can forget about him not remembering your name despite meeting several times. You mention that you’d hung around komori before while they were gaming and that he seemed pretty cool. That leads him to asking “how do you know him anyways?”
“I used to date Sakusa”
Mentally he’s just like— ‘yeah I’m not getting involved in this. Time to go.’ Until you just start laughing.
“I’m kidding. He’s not really my type. We met after being paired together for a project in school.”
The two of you spend quite a bit of time just talking that night until you are joined again by some friends and it’s deadass like y’all weren’t just talking for almost an hour straight.
Getting Together
The process of getting together is like a cat and mouse game. You two start getting closer than friends and then something happens and you’re not talking for weeks. Whether it be life just getting busy, and then someone ending up on some random tinder date or so be it. Definitely one of those things were somehow someway y’all end up just hanging on one of your couches watching a movie. At some point there’s definitely a hint of sexual tension but neither of y’all act on it (later on you find on his finsta that he used to post several “i wont you 😔” memes  Folks can’t tell if hes joking or not (hes not))
You probably gotta tell that man you like him so if that ain’t you I’m sorry. Y’all not dating 😹. It’s something casual, y’all going to pick up some snacks for a movie night and why this mf keep looking at you out the side of his eyes instead of the road. You def texting the groupchat asking if you should confess. They tell you to boss up and just do it baby.
You literally end up confessing in that parking lot. Like right when he shuts the car off and starts swinging his keys on his finger and you kinda just blurt “I like you. Like like you.” He just kinda nods before his eyes widen. “Wait are you fr?” Like no you’re joking tf. It gets a lil awkward so you just go to get out the car and he’s like “I like like you too.”
I definitely don’t think either of you ever officially asked the other out it’s just at some point the understanding that you two are a couple. Like when you’re hanging out just you two hes more touchy, and then y’all start kissing and holding hands at some point. Then when you’re with friends he almost exclusively sits next to you and your friends notice the whispers in one another’s ears at the loud bar that seem just a hint too intimate for ppl who are just friends. Then y’all start arriving and leaving places together and people just at some point get the message (it’s later confirmed by you tweeting some shit like: I hate Rin why is that mf my boyfriend)
As far as anniversaries y’all draw straws to pick a day in the ballpark of the time y’all both think you became official. That’s the day you stick with even if it’s not true.
Relationship Flaws
A fault in the relationship is sunas kinda poor communication when it comes to things that matter. How he feels. Arguments. Love sure as hell don’t come east with anyone but when your partner won’t let you in? Yeah that’s like hell. That’s something you struggle with. And then on your end, it’s the impatience with him not letting you in. You try to wrongfully rush it.
There’s definitely been arguments that stem from him just being upset about something unrelated to the relationship then coming to you for comfort without actually telling you what’s wrong. He kinda just wants to lay with his head on his chest but at some point that’s not enough. Y’all are in a relationship and should be able to talk about your bad days too.
You’re not innocent in this issue either because sometimes it comes off too pushy. Yes it’s from a place of care but sometimes that silent comfort is necessary. The walls will break in due time and y’all both know that deep in the back of your minds But then there’s a part that’s like— yeah we can’t let this become the norm
“Rin, can you please talk to me”
He will have literally told you “whatever” and that he “can’t deal with this rn” several times as he just shrugs and is like yeah “I’m gonna just go home. I’ll text you later” with an awkward ass pat on your shoulder if it really ruined his mood. If he’s leaving before he gets super upset and uncomfortable just some half assed kiss in your cheek
Another thing is I feel like he could be passive aggressive and let’s be real other folks doing it causes you to do it to. Y’all probably drag eachother on your finstas where you can both see it lol
But when it comes to making up he cracks first and apologizes when he started it. Or as y’all get more comfy with communication. If it’s not anything major he’ll just hit you with a text like “I’m bored come hang”
More Relationship Things
I feel like he love/hates driving. Likes the ride not always driving though. So if you ever proposed a late night drive he’d be down (if you offer to drive). He does let y’all take his car though. He reclines the seat pretty far back. Alternates between just closing his eyes vibing w/ the music or kinda just looking at you (he the type of bf that makes u nervous no matter how long y’all been together)The way he looks at you makes you nervous cause that man is fine as hell and you can just feel his eyes on you.
He films you on Snapchat and sends the video to you like “you look hot”
If he’s not ‘resting his eyes’ he’s mumbling along to the music because he has the aux. if y’all music tastes are different he occasionally throws in something you really like bc he likes how you perk up at one of your fav songs
Moving on. Y’all dap eachother up after s3x because it’s “modern romance” (boy stfu). You two came up with a sex playlist together and it’s on both of your phones. Sometimes one of you will add a troll song that the other doesn’t know and put it in the lineup. (Stole my heart by 1D has definitely played before and you were practically in tears laughing at his reaction. That was one of those songs he was like ‘yeah alright i think we’re done).
At some point you two develop your own handshake and it’s cute. Whenever either of you have to travel without the other that’s always the last thing you do before you leave eachother. There’s vids of your friends daring y’all to do your elaborate ass handshake drunk and doesn’t matter what’s in your system, you both know it like the back of your hand.
I think he values quality time a lot so there’s so many nights where you’re both just chilling in his room just doing your own things. He could just be at his desk watching some game highlights and you’re just doing hw on his bed with your own earbuds in work all spread out and he’s content. He’s also attentive so if he calculates that you’ve been working too long he’ll just take ur earbud like “hey let’s go get something to eat.”
People definitely think he’s the lazy one in the relationship but it’s 100% not true. Like stated above, he’s very attentive and can pretty much gauge how you’re feeling in the blink of an eye. He knows when you need alone time but won’t go without reassuring you that he’s here whenever you’re ready. When you do just need him he’s there without a second thought. If you’re more touchy he’ll have your head in his lap his arm running up and down your as you tell him what’s wrong. He knows when to joke about a minor inconvenience and over the course of your relationship knows when to cut the jokes and be serious with you.
He’d never admit it but he knows your coffee order by heart (he keeps up his image my asking wtf do you get everytime. Just let him LOL). He the type to peek at what you plan on wearing and ‘accidentally’ color coordinate then pull some shit like “why are you copying me”
Y’all def shit talk together. See someone doing something completely out of pocket in public— straight to ur phones you go (pack it up shade room). To the public it just looks like you aren’t paying any attention to one another on your dates but y’all are. Just over the phone so u don’t piss off ur target 😌
Y’all are very comfy in your relationship that you just say stuff. Y’all don’t even think.
“Rin, what if i crashed us in this car rn 😹”
“Do it. Might be fun”
When you two finally move in together it’s almost like how your relationship starts. Slowly more and more spares of stuff for you end up at his. He does sorta make the move near the end of your lease and is just like “you’re here more than me anyways.” (hes nervous but swears he’s not. Bby you’re literally shaking). Him moving you in is like hell. This mf takes sooooo long to help with boxes. Picks up 1 then sits for like 15 minutes. You ask for help the first few times and he’s just like “I got you” while continuing to scroll his phone.
Sleepy Shoulder kisses in the mornings. Only form a greeting you get but it’s ok
this is like my 100th dating suna hc and im still going this is SICK. it was so hard to not drop old refs bc i still believe in them 100% yes i do!!!!

I NEED TO RANT
Let me start by saying this is all my personal opinion and inner monologue being poured into this text. The point of this “little” essay of sorts is to voice out my thoughts on why I think Sesshomaru’s character is being portrayed into something that was never meant to be. Sorry if I make typos and ortography makes your eyes bleed.
Little disclaimer: I don’t remember much about the manga so I will stick to the anime and bring out something from the third movie.
Sesshomaru is first introduced to us as this beautiful Daiyokai with an air of superiority, he is sardonic, he’s in every sense of the word the biggest asshole of a Lord who thinks everyone on their mother is beneath him. He hates his half brother (Inuyasha) because their father died protecting him and his human wife (Izayoi) and to add salt to the wound, the old man also inherited Inuyasha with Tessaiga.
Tumblr media
Now, he had it in his head that just because he’s the eldest he should have gotten the better sword but Toga decided Tenseiga would be the one for Sesshomaru while the youngest would get Tessaiga. You can say, nah it’s because he hates Inuyasha for being a hanyo but, honestly, he was entitled to believe he deserved the best of the best just because he was a brat. That’s the truth. In the end, Sesshomaru ends up losing his arm because he was such a spoiled little shit with no respect for anyone. If that isn’t enough, his dumb ass kept trying to steal a sword that didn’t belong to him by attaching arm after arm and still, he wouldn’t get the sword. Why? Because it was not meant to be his!
During one final attempt to steal the sword Inuyasha sends his ass flying across the sky and he would have died if Tenseiga hadn’t bothered to protect him from the blow. You know what happens next, don’t you? Yes, he meets our baby girl Rin.
Tumblr media
This sweet child who felt curiosity and empathy towards this wounded demon. As little as she was, she tried her best to tend to him, to keep him comfortable even though Sesshomaru would reject her constant efforts. The thing is he hated humans, he thought of them as roaches, dirt beneath his shoes and yet he wouldn’t even try to hurt this tiny human because she posed no threat to him. Rin had it bad before meeting him, she lost her family, she was traumatized by the whole experience and that trauma resulted in her loosing her ability to speak. The people from the village treated her like scum and this demon, this spoiled Daiyokai felt curiosity for her- going as far as to ask her what had happened to her after noticing the bruises on her face. The guy tried to drown Jaken at the beginning of the series, this was a huge thing for him. Feeling interest and empathy for another creature- for a human.
Tumblr media
Once he’s feeling strong enough to get up and leave, he picks up the scent of Rin’s blood, he goes, sees she’s dead and the first thing that comes to his mind is her smiling face. I don’t know if her smile moved him somehow or he just wanted to test the sword or if he was grateful or feeling merciful to bring her back to life with Tenseiga, the point is he does and she tags along. Sesshomaru shows little to no interest to her being there at first and Jaken ends up turning into her nanny while A-Un becomes her main method of transportation. Naraku eventually kidnaps her, uses her as a way to force his hand and so on, I won’t get into much detail about that part. After the incident, Sesshomaru starts hunting Naraku and occasionally would stumble upon Inugang. Sesshomaru’s sidequests often include helping them and keeping Rin out of harm’s way because she is his one and only weakness and everyone in the darn series knows it. He is careful with how he speaks around her, he avoids fights that may endanger his little travel companion and most importantly he does not kill around her unless there’s no other option. I’ve mentioned before how most of his side quests come from having to save her.
Tumblr media
As the series progresses, we notice a huge change in him, we see he no longer picks up fights just for the kicks and overall he does his own thing but it isn’t until he breaks Tokijin we see the biggest change in his heart. Yes, I am talking about Kagura’s death. There’s a huge difference between the manga and anime in this part, if I remember correctly, in the manga he picks up her scent when his flying around (if not by all means, let me know) and goes to see her. In the anime, he is fighting Moryomaru, who has the nerve to insult her which enrages Sesshomaru and results in Tokijin being broken. In the manga Moryomaru insults her memory, she’s already gone by now. In the anime she’s near death, which is why he rushes to see her. Say what you will but he rushed to see her and you can’t change my mind, he was in a freaking hurry to find her because he smelled her blood and Naraku’s miasma mixed together. When he arrived to meet her his expression was so sad, it was one of those moments that really made me actually feel for him. The fact that he wanted to save her without anyone begging him to do so, the fact that he had no excuse for her and simply say “I knew it was you” was a huge thing for him.
Tumblr media
And he says, you know what? I will be the one to decide if she died in vain or not. That was such a breath stopper, if you ask me. After that Totosai tells him Tenseiga has picked up on the rage he was feeling, therefore it was time for it to become a real weapon. In my opinion, Sesshomaru wasn’t just angry- he was feeling impotence at not being able to save Kagura, his sword had failed him and so he had failed to carry on his own wishes. He wanted to help, he wanted to save her, he wanted to do something for someone else outside of his little bubble.
The second time we see him angry is when Rin dies (again). His little travel companion, who had served as a compass on this journey to find himself had died because he was after a power even greater than him. His sword had failed him once more and the grief he was feeling was so strong he admitted to himself such a sacrifice wasn’t worth it.
Tumblr media
Possessing a greater power doesn’t justify putting those he loves at risk, nothing is worth the lives of those he cares about the most. He had to “lose her” in order to learn compassion. His sword was more powerful now but, at what cost? When he learned he couldn’t revive her a second time, he was shocked and I even dare to say he was scared. If it hadn’t been because his mommy had the stone to revive Rin, I believe Sesshomaru would have gone berserk.
Now... this is where I wil really start going off:
You mean to tell me, this God Tier anti-hero with such a fantastic character development fathered two kids and Sunrise is portraying him as a lolicon? You mean to tell me, he is being paired with the little girl he saved over and over? You REALLY mean to tell me there’s people out there who think he would actually make Rin his wife and Sunrise is using that to get the money bag?
I can’t stress enough how ridiculous this whole sequel is for depicting him in such a way. The fact that they would even DARE to spit on his character in such a way angers me to the core. Look at how far he’s come! By portraying him into a darn lolicon they’re making him hit rock bottom, character development completely trashed, they’ve poured gasoline on him and let him burn in the corner. I know nothing is confirmed and is probably just a strategy to make people watch it, but this- this thing they’re doing is just messed up. In my opinion, he wasn’t meant to be a father. I find it incredibly weird for him to be a father. In no way did his character was headed into that direction, not at all. The only romantic interest that would have been fit to father his children in the future and in a far superior sequel would have been Kagura.
All I can say now is, I am hoping the theories come in clutch and drag Sesshomaru out of this grave Sunrise has thrown him in.

I Would Offer It Happy With a Smile On My Face (Chapter 26)
Chapter 26: But Now I Know What is Pure Happiness
Asahi talks about her family. Meanwhile, Katsumi, Isami, and Zero are finding that more and more monsters have been appearing in Ayaka.
As of the time of posting this, I'm working on the final chapter! So hopefully I'll have that done by tomorrow since school starts in two days for me and I'll have less time. Hopefully I'll remember to continue posting consistently, though.
AO3: https://archiveofourown.org/works/24860734/chapters/64713946
It was lunch time, though for Asahi, it was a bit abnormal. She didn’t normally have her lunch at KPaRS’ cafeteria, but today was an exception. Chikako insisted that she come and join everyone at lunch. Asahi agreed because she did enjoy hanging out with everyone, they were really some of her only friends in Kurokita.
Thankfully, the tables weren’t all that small, so having six people sitting around a single table wasn’t even close to being uncomfortable. It was a circular table, with Chikako next to Asahi, then Katsuhito, Fuyuko, Jun, and Rin was the next closest to Asahi. They were all eating, talking about various topics.
Asahi wasn’t sure how the topic got brought up, but it didn’t take long for Jun to say something to Katsuhito, “The thing about having even just one sibling, is there’s always at least one who’s the responsible one and one who’s not.”
Katsuhito frowned, “See, I don’t know enough about having siblings to dispute this.” He shoves some rice in his mouth, chews, then continues, “But it sounds a bit fake.”
Jun sighs, seemingly in defeat. Then she seems to realize something, turning to look at Asahi, “Hey, Asahi, you said you have two brothers, right?”
Asahi hadn’t been paying all that much attention to the conversation – she had been talking with Rin about something – so she wasn’t actually sure why Jun was asking. She looks over, tilting her head, “Huh? Yeah…”
“Ooh!” Chikako grinned, standing up slightly as she planted her hands on the table, causing Asahi to lean back bit, “You’ve only talked about them a bit. You should tell us more about your brothers!”
Rin smiled, “Yeah, what are they like?”
What were her brothers like? It wasn’t like Asahi didn’t like talking about her brothers – she loved talking about her family in general, they were all amazing – but she was surprised that they were all taking an interest in them. She supposed that her brothers could be considered a bit more interesting than most, given they were both Ultras, but still. Then again, her brothers were what most would consider a bit unusual, or maybe that was just her whole family – herself included.
But she liked to talk about her brothers, so she wasn’t going to turn down a chance to talk about them. She smiles as she begins to think of the best way to describe them. “Well, Katsumi is the oldest, he’s – generally speaking – usually the most responsible.” Katsumi was always the one who made sure Isami and her were okay. He usually tempered, or at least tried to, Isami’s occasional recklessness. “He works with Dad at our clothing shop, Quatro M. They both come up with clothing designs, though I honestly think a lot of Katsumi’s are better than Dad’s.”
Fuyuko laughed at that, “Oh, come on,” She said, “Your dad’s shirts can’t be that bad.”
“Several of his shirts are really, really, poor jokes,” Asahi responded, her tone flat, “And one of the shirts he designed was just. Sweat stains.”
There’s a moment of silence, then Katsuhito blinks, “Who would even buy that?”
She laughed, “Here’s the thing! Mr. Aizen did!” She explained between laughs, having to pause to catch her breath, “And he bought a whole bunch of them!”
“Why!” Jun bursts, “Why would anyone do that?”
Asahi shook her head, having finally calmed down from her laughing fit, “Apparently, he wanted an excuse to see Katsumi and Isami. He was using a Gyro and a Crystal to become” She takes a deep breath before continuing, knowing she’d need it for the name Mr. Aizen took, “Ultraman Orb Dark Noir Black Swartz.”
There was silence once more. This time, it was Chikako who broke the silence, repeating, “Ultraman Orb Dark Noir Black Swartz?” She pauses, as though she was still trying to take in the name. Maybe she was, it was, after all, a pretty ridiculous name. “What kinda name is that?”
“Did he seriously use the word black twice, but in different languages?” Rin sounded incredulous.
Asahi nods, “It’s crazy, I know.” She sighed, “Mr. Aizen was, in hindsight, pretty weird.”
Fuyuko drums her fingers against the table, her eyes closed for a moment. She opens them, “What about your other brother?” She inquired, “Isami?”
Humming, Asahi thought about the best way to describe her other brother. “Well, Isami’s the middle child, of the three of us.” She began, closing her eyes to focus. “He’s a lot like Mom, he likes to make gadgets and science-y things. He can be a bit… hotheaded sometimes, and stubborn. Sometimes he wants to try to do everything himself, but he means well. Usually he works with Mom.”
Isami was nice, certainly, but she’d seen what could happen when he chose to be rash. It wasn’t always bad, but a lot of times that sort of brashness had a tendency to not work out as well as anyone would have hoped. That’s why it was always good that Katsumi was so much more controlled, so he could balance out Isami.
“So each of your brothers take after one of your parents,” Jun noted, “What about you?”
“What about me?”
Rin nodded in agreement, “What do you do?” They clarified, “When you’re not here doing Ultra things.”
“Oh,” Asahi tried not to shift in her seat too much, “Well, I, uh, I guess I don’t do all that much.”
Her brothers were really simple, they both took after one of their parents. Katsumi after their dad, Isami after their mom. But Asahi wasn’t that simple, she didn’t share Katsumi and their dad’s skill or love of clothing design. She didn’t share Isami or their mom’s love of technology and science. She mostly just did her own thing. Sometimes she helped out around the shop, sometimes she would do a little to help Isami and their mom.
Katsumi and Isami had the things that the did, but Asahi… Asahi didn’t. Really, she barely left Ayaka and when she did it was so she could go and briefly help her brothers. Or something like when she met Zero. Maybe that’s why it was so odd being in Kurokita, because she just wasn’t used to being outside of Ayaka.
“Really?” Katsuhito frowned, “That’s… I’m surprised.”
She raises her hands, shaking them side to side, “Well, I mean, when Katsunii and Isanii are gone, I keep an eye on Ayaka – in case something happens.” She was quick to add, “And when they need some extra help, I make sure to get to them so we can become Gruebe.”
Fuyuko frowned, tilting her head, “Gruebe?” She echoed in confusion. Oh, had Asahi not mentioned Gruebe to them before? Well, since her brothers weren’t here, there really had never been a reason to. “What’s a Gruebe?”
Asahi scratches the back of her head, “Oh, well Rosso, Blu, and Grigio can… Can pretty much fuse into one Ultra, Gruebe.” She explained, “It’s our strongest form. Rosso and Blu can also become their own form, without me, called Ruebe.”
Chikako tilts her head, “Maybe that’s a part of why Kenshin brought you here,” She pondered, “After all, he wants revenge… And it would be a lot easier if the three of you couldn’t use your full power.”
With a hum, Asahi tugs at the end of her hair, ultimately twirling it around a finger, “I guess that would make sense,” She wondered. It was certainly a logical reason to bring her to Kurokita, to another world. Because she would be the easiest to separate, and most likely the weakest of the three of them. She’d put up less of a fight, in theory, so she would be the most obvious one to bring to another world.
Fuyuko nods, seemingly agreeing with Chikako’s theory, “It would make the most sense, really. The three of you would be too much of a danger to his plan to keep you together.”
“Still, if that’s his plan… then does that mean he’s been appearing to my brothers too, over in Ayaka?” Asahi couldn’t help but wonder, and worry somewhat. While she knew her brothers could take care of themselves, probably much better than she could, she didn’t know what Kenshin could be up to over there. Maybe they were fine, maybe Kenshin hadn’t tried anything. She just didn’t have a way of know and that… That just made her worry, just a bit.
---
“Hey, Katsumi, Isami,” Zero called out from in front of Quatro M. He was standing outside the shop, having walked out because he was hearing a commotion. He was unsurprised with what he saw, given how the past month or so had been going. It made him glad he was here, at least so he could help the two brothers. “There’s another monster.”
The two rushed out to meet up with him, nearly skidding to a halt beside him. Isami groaned, “Another one?” He took a moment to eye the monster, almost glaring at it in annoyance.
“That’s the seventh one this month,” Katsumi noted, frowning. He was right to be concerned, since, in Zero’s experience, this many monster attacks in a month was not natural. Usually, it meant that someone was bringing the monsters, that or they were doing something to cause the monsters to appear more frequently and violently. That went double given Ayaka never really had any monster naturally appear. Sure, it happened, but they very rarely came into the city.
Zero crossed his arms, “Whatever the reason,” He said, “We should probably do something about it, yeah?”
Katsumi and Isami nod, quickly transforming into Rosso and Blu. Zero followed suit, landing beside them. The monster was teal and yellow, with three heads, horns coming out a curling backwards in the center head, where the eyes would be. Zero didn’t recognize this monster, which meant he had little idea of what to expect. It roared when they appeared.
“Hey,” Isami said, “Haven’t we fought this one before?”
Katsumi tilted his head and took a good look at the monster, “Oh yeah, isn’t this the one that attacked Aizen Tech that one time?” The monster swung its tail at them, prompting Katsumi and Isami to move out of the way. “This is the one that can turn things to stone, right?”
Isami nods, “Yeah, I think you’re right.”
“Great,” Zero said, “That means you two know how to beat it.” He crossed his arms, gently leaning against a building, seemingly relaxed.
Turning slightly to look at him, Katsumi asked, “What are you doing?”
Zero effectively grinned, “I’ll leave this to you two.” He said, “You should be able to handle it.”
In response, Isami pretty much rolled his eyes, “Let’s just deal with this monster, yeah?” Katsumi nodded as his brother continued, “If I remember right, R/B Sluggers worked pretty well against her.”
The two summoned their respective R/B Slugger and took their fighting stance. The two slashed at the monster, alternating their attacks as well as dodging the heads of the monster. When she fired her beam, the one they recalled could petrify whatever it hit, they dodged out of the way. They were lucky, this time, the beam didn’t hit a window to bounce off of.
The two didn’t have too much trouble, at least not at first. The Kaiju revealed her eye, the one that was hidden in her mouth. So, the two ran to attack, only for the mouth to close and the other heads to attack. While distracted by the heads, the two Ultras were soon sent flying thanks to the two tails.
It was about then that Zero gently pushed himself off the building he was leaning against. “Are you two alright?” He inquired, leaning down a bit to look at the Katsumi and Isami. The two were on their backs on the ground, trying to get back up as fast as they could. “I thought you said you fought this monster before.”
“We have,” Isami gritted, the two of them managing to bring themselves up to a standing position.
“Just for some reason,” Katsumi added, “It seems she’s stronger.”
Zero takes a moment to examine the monster, then looks back to Katsumi and Isami. “Alright then, don’t you have something stronger to throw at it?”
Katsumi glanced over to Zero, “We could become Ruebe,” He said, “You could also, I don’t know, help.”
With a sigh, Zero shrugged, “Yeah, why not?”
Between the three Ultras, they end up making quick work of the monster. With Zero’s help, it wasn’t even necessary for Rosso and Blu to become Ruebe. With one final attack, the monster disappeared like all the others had. In a curious storm of feathers.
“See,” Zero said, “That wasn’t too bad.”
In response, Isami just grumbled, “Easy for you to say…”
“Did you say something?”
“No,”
Katsumi sighed, “Let’s just go and-“
“Oh, look,” With a bored tone and slow clapping, the three turned to face the voice. There stood that person from before, Kenshin. “You three dealt with another one of my monsters.”
“You!” Isami yelled, his ire clear in his voice. He rushed at Kenshin, swinging his R/B Slugger. Kenshin stepped out of the way.
“My, oh my,” Kenshin sounded rather smug, “You three are certainly shaping up to be quite the pain. Like your sister.”
Katsumi, though clearly angry and worried, spoke with an even tone, “Where is she?”
In response, Kenshin tutted, “That would be too easy, and no fun for me. I’ll relish in my revenge, regardless of what you think.” He spins around and kicks Isami, sending him flying towards Katsumi and Zero, “Now, it’s best you three better prepare. The finale is far sooner than you might think.”
There was little time to do much else, as Kenshin disappeared as suddenly as he had appeared. Katsumi helped Isami back up while Zero placed a hand on his hip. He turned to the two, a degree of concern in his voice when he finally spoke, “If that guy is serious,” He said, “I think you’re going to need to be prepared.”
---
That evening, the Minatos went about their dinner as they almost always did. The only difference now, was that instead of Asahi at the table, they had Zero. It had taken some time and convincing to get him to join them, but once they got him once, he hadn’t stopped. Mio and Ushio were pretty sure he actually enjoyed having dinner with them, at least to some extent.
Zero didn’t know about it, but when the Minatos found out about Zero’s limited experience with family – via some off-hand comment – they’d all met up and decided. So long as Zero was in Ayaka, they were going to do their best to show him what it was like to be apart of a family. Actively apart of a family.
The Minatos had a tendency to do that sort of thing. They did it with Asahi, but in a more similar manner, they did it with Riku. And Riku had only been in Ayaka for two days, Zero had been there much longer. So they thought their efforts were going rather well. Admittedly, Zero didn’t actually do all the much with the family, they often had to convince him to, but he also didn’t really share a lot of interest with them.
Still, they were ever thankful he was helping them look for Asahi, even if that search wasn’t having much luck. They’d find her, or she’d find her way back to them. They knew it.
Though it also seemed like they had something else to worry about now. Kenshin. And it seemed Kenshin also had something to do with Asahi’s disappearance. It was entirely possible that he could be doing something to her, or forcing her to fight all sorts of monsters. But without knowing where she was, all they could do was hope for the best and trust Asahi to manage.
Even if Katsumi and Isami were worried sick. Even if her whole family was. Even Zero seemed to be concerned. Asahi was… She was strong enough and she was an Ultra. She’d be fine. She had to be.
As it turned out, no one in the Minato household had any idea how true that was.

戦国時代
A week passes, and then another.
Skirmishes between the two sides continue, and Sasuke often finds himself out on the field trying to keep the casualties to a minimum. On his side, Naruto does the same, although twice altercations between their men lead them into trading half-hearted blows.
Well…not exactly half-hearted, Sasuke thinks, wincing at the rather significant bruise across his entire chest from a stray Rasengan.
Whatever Naruto’s personal feelings toward Sakura—Sasuke suspects there may once have been more than simple brotherly concern on his part—he is clearly interested in her happiness. The injury was delivered with few choice, overprotective words and a threat regarding the wellbeing of a certain pink-haired medic.
Sakura herself is conspicuously absent during this time, although on the first night of their long separation, a slug summon informs Sasuke that she is fine but recuperating. It makes sense—he has had his own difficulty recovering following Itachi’s healing. His chakra reserves are nowhere near their usual level; he can’t imagine the convalescence Sakura must now undertake.
It is probably, as she suggested, like what Itachi is experiencing.
While he rests from the stress of his ordeal, Sasuke’s brother is watched over by Rin. Whether she knows the specifics of his healing, Sasuke doesn’t know, but it wouldn’t surprise him if Kakashi and Obito confessed it all to her. There are few secrets between those three.
In the meantime, he and the rest of the unexpected co-conspirators set their plans in motion. While Itachi and his cousin start to meet quietly with those individuals who may be most open to the idea of peace, Kakashi leaves with Inabi and his group. They are so eager to hunt Danzō that they barely question his presence. Several of the Hyūga clan are sent along as well, including Neji. It’s a measure to throw off suspicion, and one of protection; despite Kakashi’s confidence Itachi doesn’t intend to lose his mentor to a kunai in the back.
Meanwhile, Sasuke dutifully visits with the Hyūga elders and broaches the subject of peace negotiations with the Senju and the Uzumaki. He can see that they are somewhat wary, considering he is the one delivering the news instead of Itachi. He can also sense the palpable air of relief that ripples through the assembled clansmen once the suggestion is made. Hinata, standing beside her younger sister, gasps and clasps her hands together, eyes shining with naked hope.
Sasuke wonders if, before all of this, he would have noticed these things.
“This dissolves none of the previous arrangements,” Hyūga Hiashi maintains. “The Hyūga and the Uchiha will be united.”
Sasuke is careful to keep his expression blank and not betray the minor stab of annoyance and confusion at the rather public reminder. Whatever his personal feelings or situation, it sounds almost as if the Hyūga are suggesting Sasuke’s clan would go back on their word. It’s a veiled insult that oughtn’t be tolerated.
But then he notices the slump in Hinata’s shoulders, and the defeated expression she attempts to hide; he realises that it’s not him that Hiashi is reminding, but her.
It appears she is not indifferent or complacent about their betrothal the way he originally believed.
And if that’s the case, she might be a good ally to have.
“The Uchiha continue to honour their relationship and promises,” Sasuke tells the leader of the Hyūga, although he looks to Hinata when he says it. “I will personally do all in my power to ensure the future leaders of the Hyūga and their needs are best served.”
And I couldn't care less about the current ones, he adds mentally, as Hinata’s eyes widen incrementally. He thinks he sees that same hope from earlier flash across her pale irises. If he’s honest with himself, he has no idea how he will keep that promise. It seems he has lately fallen into the trap of optimism that Sakura seems to bring out in everyone.
They say it’s easier to ask forgiveness than permission, he thinks, suspecting that a better offer might present itself to the Hyūga if peace is achieved.
戦国時代
Quietly, the rest of the plan falls into place.
Generals and well-respected lieutenants are brought into the fold, and then leaders among the camp followers and infantrymen. As the rumours begin to circulate, Itachi holds more meetings with the Uchiha council, bringing in as many allies and proponents as possible to make the arguments for peace. It’s a brilliant tactical stroke, reminding the older generation that they serve the needs of the people, while also deflecting any need for Itachi to grandstand.
He calls upon Sasuke to speak for him in most instances, repeatedly legitimising this decision by mentioning the importance of his younger brother learning the ways of diplomacy.
A general sense of excitement falls over the camp, heavy with the anticipation of the long conflict’s end.
There are a few dark days after Inabi and his men return, Kakashi and Neji in tow. They demand answers from Itachi and the council, and hold several informal gatherings among the army to try to stir up sentiment against the idea. But public opinion remains united in the face of this; in the end, they content themselves with angry mutterings in the face of the official stance.
“I still think we should kill them,” Obito mutters occasionally, but whenever he does someone is on hand to distract him. Rin will deposit his infant daughter into his arms or Kakashi will suggest they spar, and all will be well once again.
It is the most at-ease that Sasuke remembers anyone in his life ever being.
Himself included.
Sasuke receives a pleasant, if jarring, surprise a few days later when he goes to bring his brother news.
Sakura is sitting beside Itachi, still pale and showing the same frailty that he noticed the night Naruto carried her home. Despite this, she talks and laughs with Sasuke’s brother as if they are simply old friends visiting after a long estrangement.
“What are you doing?” Sasuke demands at last, logic returning on the heels of his concern.
“Checking on my patient,” she replies, frowning at him in reproach—as if he should know better than to ask such a question.
“You look terrible.”
“You’re mean,” she grumbles in retort; she stands and wanders over to him. “My chakra system is still recovering. I told you it would take me longer than all of you.” She places a hand on his forehead, ostensibly to check his temperature, but he recognises it as the most overt gesture of fondness she’ll allow herself with company. He suspects this is more for his own sensibilities than hers. Sakura isn’t as uncomfortable showing affection as he is—in public or alone. “How are you feeling?”
“Fine.”
“Liar,” she accuses. “You’re still paler than I’d like. And you look tired.”
“We’re all tired. It’s been a busy few weeks,” he reminds her.
“True,” she says, letting the matter lie although her eyes continue to survey him with a medic’s scrutinising eye. Then she smiles. “Hopefully that will be at an end soon, at least in some respects. I was just telling your brother that, barring any unforeseen complications, he will make a full recovery. His condition is cured.”
Sasuke has to replay her words a few times to make sure he has heard her properly; when the meaning finally sinks, an odd, floating emotion bubbles up within him. The constant weight of his brother’s disease has been constricting him for months now, and to have the spectre suddenly gone leaves him feeling lighter.
And it’s all because of the small figure beaming up at him.
“Sakura…” he begins, not knowing exactly what to say. After floundering for several seconds, he settles on a quiet, “Thank you.”
Her cheeks darken, and she bites her lips. Sasuke’s eyes track the motion.
“You look as ridiculous as Father always did around Mother,” Itachi speaks up, pulling them both back to the present. Sakura jumps a little and Sasuke looks up, noting a rare (and disconcerting) grin on his brother’s face.
He curses himself, wondering how he could have forgotten the older man was is in the room.
“Father never looked ridiculous,” he contends, trying to save face.
“You’re too young to remember,” Itachi dismisses, and then his expression turns stern. “You be good to this woman. I suspect the future of the Uchiha rests with her.”
He gazes at Sakura with a look that is far too knowing for Sasuke’s liking; it doesn’t help that she blushes at the comment and looks away.
“You’re getting sentimental in your old age,” he accuses him.
“Bite your tongue, I’m only twenty-four.”
“If you’re so young and spry, then, maybe we should test you out. It’s been a while since we sparred,” Sasuke suggests. Though the offer isn’t made with any seriousness, he can’t hide the minor note of threat there.
“You will not!” Sakura snaps. “No undoing my hard work, I won’t have it, even from you, Sasuke-kun.”
“Yes, Sasuke-kun, behave yourself.”
Sasuke pretends to grind his teeth, but it’s been ages since Itachi was in such a jovial mood to tease him that he lets it go. His irritation must be convincing, though, because Sakura chooses this point to change the subject.
“I’m not just here to make sure Itachi-kun is resting,” she says, eyes gleaming mischievously. “I also have news from our side. The general sentiment is favourable, and Tsunade-shishou intends to make the announcement today or tomorrow. She’s just waiting on the priests to suggest a good date and location.”
“Ours are doing the same,” Itachi nods.
Sasuke rolls his eyes. “That’s a waste of time.”
“People are superstitious by nature,” Itachi tells him. “Let them find comfort in that. Considering the difficulty in simply broaching the subject of peace, embracing possible supernatural aid might not be a bad idea.”
“This is a matter of policy, not religion,” Sasuke scoffs. “We’d be better served with Obito’s suggestions of getting everyone drunk and drawing suggestions out of a hat.”
“If you could hold your alcohol, maybe that wouldn’t be a bad idea,” Itachi pretends to muse.
Sakura makes a noise between a giggle and a snort, and Sasuke glowers at both of them.
“Peace or not, you two aren’t allowed to keep company anymore.”
戦国時代
The conclave is planned for a fortnight afterward. It is agreed that they will take place on the highest cliff that borders both clans’ territories.
It takes more convincing than anticipated to convince Inabi and his men to stay at the camp. They only accept the decision when Itachi declares that only the Uchiha council and his second-in-command will be part of the Uchiha delegation. Uchiha Yakumi, who sits on the council is an ally of theirs and will no doubt represent their concerns. With this, they must be contented. Kakashi isn’t thrilled to be left home, either, but he has his own duty to perform: keeping an eye on those left behind.
The day of the meeting, a contingent of Uchiha and Hyūga arrive at the appointed time just after dawn. The Hyūga outnumber the Uchiha greatly, as if to make a point about their force, both to their allies and their enemies. With the exception of Hiashi and his children, they are only the branch members of the clan.
There is a forest shrine within the trees, and they wait there for the remaining delegations. The Senju and the Uzumaki are late by an hour which causes some grumbling and anxiety, but Itachi maintains a positive view.
“It is possible our guests have gotten lost,” Itachi suggests mildly, motioning for Sasuke to go and keep an eye out. His expression reads caution, however, and Sasuke nods.
“Neji,” Hyūga Hiashi orders. “Go with him.” Neji nods. “And take Hinata along. Uchiha-sama and I have matters to discuss.”
“Yes, Uncle.”
Hinata looks both surprised and dismayed, but the expression vanishes a moment later to be replaced with a complacent smile. “Yes, Father.”
Sasuke raises an eyebrow.
There have been rumours that the younger daughter has recently grown in favour, despite Hinata being the heir. The request for Hinata to be absent from the peace proceedings while her younger sister remains is telling.
And insulting.
It bothers him.
She’s a good woman, and Sasuke knows from experience what it’s like to be passed over for a more talented sibling. Perhaps that’s why he speaks up.
“It’s a wise choice,” he tells Hiashi. “Hinata-hime is of a more pleasant disposition than I. She will likely be more welcoming to the Uzumaki and the Senju.”
There is a ringing silence, both from the Hyūga and his own kin; he isn’t sure why this garners such surprise, but upon reflection, he supposes he was a little more polite than usual. Still, when Hinata offers him a grateful smile, he feels vindicated. He has never had to stand up for a friend before.
He blinks, a little surprised, because he didn’t realise he considered Hinata a friend.
I seem to be collecting those, he thinks as they stroll away from the shrine toward the forest edge.
Neither he nor the Hyūga who accompany him are much for conversation, which is somewhat of a relief. They can simply wait in silence together, which suits Sasuke just fine. He doesn’t miss the suspicious looks Neji keeps sending his way, or curious ones directed at Hinata. Perhaps trying to decide if there is more to their relationship than what is proper.
Eventually the quiet is broken by the sounds of voices in the distance.
“The Uzumaki,” Neji says, the veins in his eyes growing thicker, and Sasuke nods in acknowledgement. Hinata seems to wring her hands nervously.
“Have you ever met the leader of the Uzumaki before?” Sasuke asks her, suddenly remembering her nervous questions about his erstwhile rival.
“N-no, I have…I have never had the opportunity,” she mumbles. “But the stories…and your own words of his character…to me he seems more legend than person.”
Sasuke snorts. “He puts his sandals on one at a time, the same as anyone else. Although, knowing him, he probably does that wrong, too.”
Neji can’t hold back the quiet chuckle at this.
Soon, several dozen people fill the clearing, Naruto at the head. Most of them have the tell tale red hair and freckles of the Uzumaki—like the shrewd looking, bespectacled woman behind Naruto. But there are a good deal of others as well. The man with the scar across the bridge of his nose walks beside Naruto, and a swarthy, skinny man smoking a cigarette.
Nara Shikamaru, Sasuke recalls. He has never engaged with the man personally, but knows of him. He was integral to carrying out the destruction of the Akatsuki mercenaries.
Upon seeing their greeting party, Naruto seems to forget the seriousness of the occasion, because he waves and runs up ahead. “Oi! Sasuke! Could you guys have chosen a more remote location?”
“It wasn’t just the Uchiha who chose this place,” he retorts testily as the rest of the Uzumaki delegation grows nearer.
“Oh, I know, the Senju are just as big on fancy gestures,” Naruto snorts. “I swear, you guys could…”
He trails off as his eyes fall on the two people beside Sasuke—or rather, one of them in particular.
He looks like he’s just been hit by a kanabō, Sasuke is amused to note, watching the other man’s jaw go slack at the sight of Hinata.
Neji clears his throat. “Uzumaki Naruto—allow me to introduce Hyūga Hinata-hime, daughter of Hyūga Hiashi and heir to the clan.”
There’s another lull, and then Naruto seems to remember himself because he staggers into a bow.
“It is my honour to make your acquaintance,” he tells her, and his cheeks seem a little redder than before. He stands and grins. “The Hyūga and the Uzumaki have never had a direct quarrel between us. It’s only due to our alliances we’ve come into conflict. I hope we can be friends again after this.”
Hinata stares at him with a look of astonishment.
And then she suddenly pitches forward in a faint.
There’s a cry from all around, and everyone in her immediate vicinity tries to stop her, but Naruto is closest, catching hold of her.
“Are you all right?” he asks in concern.
She shakes her head quickly, cheeks flooding with more colour than Sasuke can ever recall seeing in them.
Well that’s…interesting.
“F-forgive me,” she stammers. “I believe…the heat…I just…”
She struggles, looking miserable and furious at herself.
Naruto, apparently oblivious to the reason behind her disquiet, says, “Well, we can’t have you fainting on such an important day. Come on, let’s walk for a little. I’ll accompany you.”
“Naruto, you can’t really go anywhere,” the scarred man—his foster father—chuckles nervously. “You’re supposed to be meeting with the other clan heads, remember?”
“I’m not going very far, Iruka-sensei,” he returns. “We’re just going to stretch our legs—right, Hinata-chan?”
He offers her his arm.
Th Hyūga heiress makes a tiny, squeaking noise that is almost lost in the concerned murmurs around them at the familiar tone and gesture.
“I…I…yes,” she manages, ignoring Neji’s frown as she accepts Naruto’s arm.
“Oi! Sasuke—are you coming too?” Naruto wants to know.
“I will await the Senju delegation,” he replies, earning a smirk from the other man.
“Of course, you will,” he leers, making Sasuke want to hit him, but he refrains. Instead, as Naruto leads the two Hyūga off, Sasuke turns to the remaining Uzumaki. The bespectacled redhead is looking at him with undisguised interest, but he addresses Nara Shikamaru instead.
Blood or not, the shadow manipulator is one of Naruto’s close advisors.
“Your leader is apparently courting tardiness, but my brother and Lord Hyūga await by the forest shrine,” Sasuke tells Shikamaru. “You might as well wait there.”
“Troublesome,” Nara sighs, but indicates the rest of the procession should follow him. Sasuke breezes past them, heading to the mouth of the forest path to wait for the Senju.
戦国時代
It’s another half hour before they arrive, in all their finery. Like the Uchiha and the Uzumaki, they carry only light, ceremonial weaponry—these are peace talks, however the war has been so long that no one will arrive unarmed.
The sight of the one leading their procession is an intimidating one. Senju Tsunade is only taller than Sakura by a few inches, but she exudes such a commanding presence that everyone around her seems much shorter by comparison. She is muscular and buxom, with hard eyes and an even harder mouth, but that’s all Sasuke really notices about her just then. His attention is drawn inexorably to her apprentice as she walks beside her.
It’s only been two weeks, but somehow, he feels like it’s been much longer since he’s seen her. She looks different somehow, and he suspects that it is because she is so overjoyed at the potential peace.
“Shishou,” Sakura says when the Senju procession stops in front of Sasuke. “This is Uchiha Sasuke—the brother of Uchiha Itachi.”
The blond woman looks at him with surprisingly cold, penetrating eyes. “I know who he is.”
Then, without a word, she continues on toward the forest shrine.
Sakura stares after her, seeming a little taken-aback by the hostile attitude, but Sasuke wisely did not expect much better.
“I bet she’s just tense about all of this today,” Sakura murmurs apologetically. “It’s such a big deal, and said she wasn’t feeling very well this morning. She barely spoke to me on the way over, which I think shows how anxious she is about all this.” She laughs nervously. “Age is catching up with her.”
“Sakura, don’t be so familiar,” a black-haired woman carrying a tiny pig chastises. She eyes Sasuke with wary suspicion that, while not as hostile as Tsunade, is still not entirely friendly.
“Oh stop, Shizune-sama, I know you’re worried about her too,” Sakura dismisses. “You were panicking because you couldn’t find her in her room this morning and thought she had wandered off or something…”
“Sakura! Hush!”
“It would be best if everyone made their way to the shrine,” Sasuke says stiffly, aware of the eyes of his (former) enemies on him. “The sooner we begin, the better.” He addresses Sakura. “I have to track down the leader of the Uzumaki. He went on an impromptu walkabout with some of the Hyūga.”
“Allow me to accompany you,” Sakura suggests.
“My lady, I’m not sure that’s a good idea,” Shizune frets.
“You can’t really be worried about Ugly’s safety, can you?” a pale man in the background asks. He smiles in a way that seems forced, but when Sasuke meets his gaze, he notices that the gesture doesn’t reach his eyes. “I have heard of Uchiha-san’s many faults from Naruto, but I doubt stupidity is one of them. No doubt he knows if he tried something untoward, she would murder him.”
It takes a moment for Sasuke to understand that the man has not only insulted Sakura, but possibly him. A hot flare of anger rises up within him, and he opens his mouth to offer a reprimand or perhaps an insult, but Sakura raises a calming hand.
“Sai, your, ah, blunt confidence is appreciated,” she says, offering him a wry smile that to Sasuke suggests she is unbothered or even used to his insult. “But such a thing wouldn’t happen today anyhow, because we are on neutral ground. No man or woman among us would dare cause trouble because no one here wishes to court war any longer.”
There are murmurs of agreement, and Sasuke is struck with an admiration and a little surprise that Sakura is actually a decent stateswoman. Perhaps it is not just for her healing gifts and strength that Tsunade chose her as her apprentice.
“Besides, we are hoping to ensure the most favourable terms for everyone,” she continues. “It makes sense that the heirs of the Uchiha and the Senju interact, both officially and unofficially.”
She tilts her head to one side, as if asking his opinion, and Sasuke nods, still not trusting himself to speak.
“Now. Shall we?” she suggests, and he wordlessly leads the way in the direction he saw Naruto and the Hyūga head in earlier.
They are careful not to touch.
“Heirs,” Sasuke echoes once they are out of earshot. “I didn’t realise it was official.”
Sakura looks down modestly although her eyes shine with triumph. “Yes. Tsunade-shishou has broached the subject to our elders. It hasn’t been made legally binding yet, but soon. Since she has no children, and—well, she says Naruto has too much Uzumaki in him to be any use…”
He snorts.
“She thought it was time,” Sakura concludes.
Once they pass the bend in the forest path, no longer even visible to anyone back at the shrine, Sasuke allows himself to relax. Sakura, too, seems to become less tense, allowing herself to gravitate closer to him so that they are almost touching.
They walk together in silence for a while, Sasuke reflects on the fact it’s the first time they’ve done so. Their meetings up until now have been clandestine and careful; he didn’t realise the relief he would experience at spending time with her in daylight and not having to be constantly vigilant in the face of discovery.
At least not so much, he thinks, still very aware of the fact that their relationship must remain secret. Though he wonders if, in the wake of this peace, should someone discover it, would the outcome be worth it?
“Oh, look!” Sakura blurts, pointing ahead of them.
Sasuke follows her gaze as they emerge from the tree line and into a vast valley. It is one of the older battlegrounds, still littered with discarded weapons and marred by the hills of graves. And yet, Sakura beams at the sight, observing with bright eyes.
“What is it?” he asks.
“Don’t you see it?” she asks, a lilt of teasing in her voice. “You, with your mighty Sharingan?”
He frowns at her, and out of spite, refuses to activate it. Instead, he takes a second glance, trying to see what she sees. It takes him a moment, but when he does, he can’t help shake his head in amusement.
Of course, she can gaze upon something so dark and find the light.
Tiny sprigs of green shoot up through the ground, determinedly pushing aside the charred soil. A few of the patches have yielded thick moss and little purple flowers, a sharp contrast of life in the face of a place that has seen so much death.
“Even after everything that has happened here, there’s still hope,” she says. “It’s beautiful.”
“Aa,” he says, though his eyes are fixed on her instead of the newly growing greenery.
She must hear something in his tone, because when she looks back and notes him watching her, she smirks. Before he’s quite aware of it, she reaches out and tugs him by the collar, pulling him close.
“Is this the most opportune time?” he asks, half-exasperated and half-amused.
Sakura draws back, a penitent expression on her face.
“You’re right. I shouldn’t—”
“I never said you shouldn’t,” he cuts her off, leaning in to close the remaining distance between them.
She squeaks in surprise, which turns into a giggle—and then a moan as their lips touch. He wastes no time in deepening the kiss, relishing in the taste of her, while her hands slip lazily under the fabric of his hitatare. As he winds his arms around her, pulling her in closer to his chest, he senses the warmth of her hand through the fabric, travelling downward until—
Sasuke hisses when her fingers prod the still healing bruise on his chest, and she pulls back.
“Sasuke-kun?”
“It’s nothing,” he tells her.
“It didn’t sound like nothing.”
“A bruise from a fight. I’ll survive.”
“Hmph,” she shakes her head, not buying it, and determinedly slides her hands back under his hitatare and kosode, fingers seeking out the injury and brushing her fingers against it. Her cool chakra flows through him. “You and Naruto are supposed to be friends.”
She doesn’t even question who gave him the bruise.
“You keep saying that. Perhaps it isn’t as true as you’d like.”
She rolls her eyes at him in fond exasperation. “Should I be insulted that he leaves more marks on your body than I do?”
“No. You should take it as an incentive.”
“And incentive to what?”
“To leave more,” he tells her, pushing her back against the tree.
It’s been far too long since he’s touched her. If he only has a few minutes to spend with her before the talks—if he only has this moment now before their futures are decided—he intends to spend it reducing her to desperate moans, gasps and pleas for more.
Her clothing is more cumbersome than usual, but he doesn’t let that delay him for long as he unties her hakama.
“Sasuke-kun,” she murmurs, catching his hands before he can. “There’s something…there’s something I need to tell you…”
“Tell me later.”
“But it’s—”
There is an explosion of sound, and the surrounding forest seems to vibrate.
They both freeze, stunned.
“That came from the conclave!” Sakura whispers, wide-eyed.
Sasuke takes off in that direction; he doesn’t hear Sakura follow him, but knows she is close behind. As they run, they clamber up into the tree tops to find out what’s happening. They breach the canopy of leaves and stare into the distance where smoke and debris rise from the vicinity of the shrine.
But that isn’t what occupies Sasuke’s attention.
“What…what is that?” Sakura gasps.
Sasuke has to swallow a few times, forcing back the bile that threatens to rise in his throat, as the reality of what he’s seeing sets in.
“That’s a Susanoo,” he tells her, his Sharingan burning to the surface as he takes in the massive green leviathan in the distance.
“A what?”
“The strongest ability of those who have awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan,” he explains neutrally. “A being made of the user’s chakra that can fight on their behalf—the ultimate defence and offence.”
She gapes. “But…we’re here for peace talks, why would…?”
“That’s not the problem.”
“Then what is?”
Sasuke clenches his fists so hard that his nails bite into the flesh of his palms.
“It’s Shisui’s.”
