Therapy Session #1 || Jaiden & Dean Lee
Jaiden took a deep breath as she stared at the door to the office that she was directed to. “Dean Lee” was posted on the door, surrounded by green little frog stickers and lilypads. Okay. This shouldn’t be too bad. The exterior was inviting enough. Her hand lingered on the doorknob for a second, a shadow of dread looming over her shoulders. Was she ready to open up? It was mandatory. There really wasn’t a choice. Her fingers finally closed tightly around the knob and turned it, hearing the door click open and swinging it open as quietly as possible. Sitting at her desk was Dean Lee, typing away at her computer. Seeing Jaiden peeking in through the crack in her door, she nearly jumped out of her seat. “OH GOD!” Dean Lee yelled, grabbing her chest. Jaiden also jumped at her reaction, horror and confusion plastered on her face. She was at the right room, right?? Dean Lee quickly took a breath and narrowed her eyes at Jaiden, recognizing her. “Oh, you’re Jaiden! Sorry, you scared me. Usually you sit out in the waiting room and wait to be called for your appointment… Or knock.” Jaiden was horrified. She was so anxious about this appointment that she completely forgot etiquette in this situation. “I’m so sorry, I–” She started, nearly backing out of the room. “No no! Its okay, you’re actually right on time!” Dean Lee said, rising from her desk to come to meet Jaiden at the door. She pushed the door fully open, and Jaiden subconsciously scanned the room. Cozy. String lights. Covered in frogs. Small figurines here and there…is Dean Lee a collector of many things? “Please, come in! There’s a comfy seat you can take right over here. Plenty of things to fidget with too if you need.” Jaiden nodded silently, removing her eyes from the room to find the seat suggested to her. She takes it gently, hands folded in her lap. She sees a squishy fidget ball in a basket next to her, and she gingerly takes it. Its blue, but when you squeeze it, it turns green. Dean Lee sits across from Jaiden, clipboard and pen in hand, and smiles. “Alright. This is just a check-up first session. You ready?” Jaiden nods.
Her hands are already fidgeting with the squeeze ball, pulling at it gently and squishing it. She wasn’t necessarily ready to be analyzed like an experiment, but that’s not what this is. Its supposed to help her. “So…How have you settled in and everything? Adjusting to the school okay?” Dean Lee says, a warm but unreadable smile on her face. Jaiden nods, continuing to fidget. Silence passes between them for a bit, before Dean Lee finally speaks up. “..I’m gonna need a little more than that, Jaiden. How has everything been?” Jaiden sighed, dejected. This wasn’t going to be as easy as she hoped. “Its been…Good. Actually. I’ve met a lot more people than I was expecting to meet…Even some old friends.” She said, nodding again. She wasn’t wrong. Schlatt especially was someone exciting to run into. Dean Lee nodded, still smiling, jotting things down. Jaiden could hear the scratch of the pen, and it made her fidget just a little bit more. She’s being notated on. That’s not something she’s used to. “That’s really good, Jaiden! I’m glad to hear you’ve met a good amount of people. So you’ve pretty much settled in?” She asked, pausing her writing long enough for Jaiden to realize there was a little frog on the end of it. How cute. Jaiden nods a third time. Yessing Dean Lee to death seemed like a good option right now. “Yeah…The birds are settled, they don’t freak out at night anymore, and everything was unpacked in a day. I’d say I’m settled.” Jaiden said slowly. Right away, Dean Lee jots down more notes. The noise makes Jaiden slightly crinkle her nose.
“And how has this week in particular been?” Dean Lee said, looking up from her notes again. Jaiden took a deep breath. “Good…” She starts, pondering the events of the week. “Like I said…Met people… Learned some things about other people… Lost one of my eggs…” In between pauses, Dean Lee was jotting down her usual notes, but stopped at the egg comment. “Lost an egg??” She said, her brows furrowing. “Can you tell me a little more about that?” Jaiden frowned. It wasn’t that serious. “I was showing off my bird’s eggs that I’ve kept frozen for a while to a friend I just met, he picked one up and accidentally dropped it.” She said plainly. Not even much emotion to her statement. Dean Lee looked at her with a bit more of a serious look to her face. “How did you feel about it?” The words finally left her mouth. Jaiden froze. She pondered the situation. How did she feel about it? “Honestly…” She started, the fidgeting with her hands becoming a little more intense. “I wasn’t too bothered… I wasn’t ready for how he reacted though.” Dean Lee nods, not writing, just listening. Jaiden felt solace in that. “How did he react?” She asked. Jaiden shrugged. “He freaked out… He was in distress. I don’t regret the experience…I feel like I learned something about him.” She said, short and sweet. Dean Lee finished nodding, taking a moment to look at Jaiden in case she had anything else to say, before turning back to her clipboard and writing down whatever it was she was writing down. Jaiden took a small breath. The writing continues. Just typical therapy stuff, Jaiden.
“Alright…” Dean Lee starts. “Now, do you think you’ve made any progress in your situation?” Fuck. Okay. There it is. “I don’t know…” Jaiden immediately says, a little too fast for her own liking. Dean Lee raised an eyebrow at her, just watching. Jaiden listened to the silence for a moment, realizing that she was going to have to elaborate. “I mean… I’ve been doing good, I think.” Good. Good. All she can say is good. Is it a “good” enough answer? “I’ve just been going through the motions, you know? Still getting used to everything.” She finishes. That should be enough, right? Dean Lee waits for a moment, tapping her pen rhythmically on the edge of her clipboard for a moment, before breaking the silence. “Okay! That’s good, progress seems to be made right up front.” She says, before leaning a bit closer. “So tell me then, has there been anything else stressful going on? Anything that’s making things harder for you?” She asked. Jaiden pressed her lips together. “Just…” She faltered. These questions are hard. Why is she asking them? “Just meeting new people, is all… I get nervous and I want to make a good impression, so I try to learn about them.” There. Okay. She got it out. She looked at Dean Lee with a near pleading look, as if she were non-verbally begging her not to ask her to elaborate. Dean Lee did nothing but nod. “Perfectly reasonable, Jaiden. I think we all want to make good first impressions when we meet people. Just remember that you don’t need to go too far, yeah? Being yourself IS the best version of yourself.” Jaiden nodded, the words nearly going in one ear and out the other. Jaiden was too nice to not completely ignore her, though. She would remember what was being said to her.
Dean Lee leaned back in her seat and crossed her legs underneath her, jotting down some more notes. Jaiden honed in on the scribbling sounds again. Is this almost over?? Can she go home yet? She just wanted to feed her birds. Dean Lee finally looks up from her clipboard. “So, since meeting all of these new people, how have you felt about them? We’re talking good and bad feelings.” She asked, resting her clipboard in her lap and folding her hands on top of it. Was she done writing? Jaiden shrugged at her question. “Everyone is fine…I haven’t had any problems with anyone.” She said honestly. She really didn’t feel any sort of tension or anything with anyone, at least not yet. “Even the person who broke your bird’s egg?” Dean Lee asked, curiosity on her face. Jaiden shook her head. “No hard feelings for him either. He seemed genuinely remorseful.” Dean Lee nodded, finally picking back up her clipboard and writing down some more. Ugh. So she wasn’t done writing yet. Jaiden lowered her gaze back down to her hands as Dean Lee wrote, squeezing the ball in her hands again and focusing on the colors. Blue and green. Like her birds.
“Alright!” Dean Lee says, her pen hitting the clipboard as she clasps them both in one hand and stands up. “I think that’s enough grilling you for today. We had a really good first session, I think!” She said, walking over to Jaiden. Jaiden looked around suddenly, as if she was shocked that the session would actually end. “That’s all?” She asked, carefully putting the ball back in the basket and standing up. “Yep! That’s all. Our office will email you with your next session and which therapist you’ll be with next.” She said, walking to Jaiden’s side and leading her to the door. She reached out her hand for Jaiden to shake, which Jaiden gently took and shook lightly, nervously. Dean Lee smiled a warm smile. “Get home safe, okay? Have a great rest of your week. Oh! Remember to knock next time.” She said, holding the door open for Jaiden to leave. Jaiden nodded, a quiet “you too, thanks” leaving her mouth before she turned and exited the office. She turned to look over her shoulder as the door clicked shut, looking at Dean Lee’s nameplate again. Okay. That’s over with. First session done. She took a deep breath and let it out in a huge sigh, relieving a pressure on her chest that she didn’t realize was fully there. Turning out of the therapy offices, she left the building and made her way back home. Hopefully the next therapy session would be as smooth as this one went. Hopefully.

Newt Scamander helping you through your depression would include...
Requested by: anon
Warnings: symptoms of depression, low mood, hopelessness etc. I largely used my own experiences of my depression (sertraline gang), so it may not be the same for everyone, MAJOR WARNING: one very brief reference to self harm/cutting
And if you’re feeling low, suicidal, anxious, please please please DM me- I’m here to talk (though my replies may be slow!) and I can try and link you to mental health facilities online 💖💖
This is just what my depressed arse needs 🥺🥺
Gif creds to owner
Tumblr media
You’ve been together long enough for him to notice a shift in your mood, even if it’s slight.
I’m not talking ‘there weren’t any muffins so you’re a bit sad because you were craving them’ mood
I’m talking ‘everything is pointless and futile and nothing in the world matters so what is the point’
It shatters his heart into a million pieces to see the light of his life go dull and silent, with hardly a shred of yourself left in the shell of your body.
There are times where he’ll go into his briefcase early in the morning to do the routine checks on his animals, and when he resurfaced at noon, you’re still in bed, staring blankly at the wall
A lot of the time he’s content to sit or lay with you, or rub your back when you cry
There are also times when you aren’t looking after yourself
“I’ve run you a hot bath, YN, and I’ve got your comfy clothes out for after,”
You nod and let him guide you in the bathroom, telling you he’s making you a strong cup of tea and something to get your energy up
And when you go through the drawers in search of a razor to tame your leg hair, your eyes well up with tears when you see that he has taken the razors out of the bathroom
You give him an extra big hug afterwards
Your mumble of ‘thank you’ let’s him know exactly what you’re talking about
Sometimes, on better days, you’ll have a bit more energy and join him in his case
You don’t do as much as you normally would (ie helping muck out enclosures etc), often just... walking.
Something about the sounds and smells of the menagerie relaxes you, loosening up tension you weren’t aware was building up
If you’re sitting down while newt’s working with the animals, he will place the cuddliest, or gentlest, Or most affectionate of that species in your arms
Granted, you start off with one, and quickly end up swamped by nifflers, all wanting a bit of attention
Picket likes to sit on your shoulder and nuzzle behind your ear, making little chirping noises that you can’t help but smile at
Overall, Newt is the perfect blend of affectionate and caring when you slip, as well as helping you through the harsh realities of mental illness when you cannot make yourself take care of your physical health too
