In the past, if someone were to come up to you and tell you that you’d be a part of the One Piece Live Action main cast in the future, you would’ve probably laughed in their faces despite your wishful thinking.

At that time, you were content with your work, doing short theatre plays with companies or gaining minor roles in musicals. Everything changed when you landed the role for the one-woman show Fleabag for a limited time on London’s West End after the leading actress underwent emergency surgery for an appendectomy. You only acted as the sex-obsessed mess of a woman for about three weeks, but it was enough time for people to notice you, to really see you.

You believed your career had reached its pinnacle when you were cast as Katherine Howard in Six: The Musical in London. Your name had become somehow well-known in the musical theatre world, and you had a small but dedicated fan base who liked uploading edits of you being a dork during the Megasix on YouTube and TikTok. 

Months later, you were bound to play as Fantine for Les Miserables when COVID abruptly struck, and you were dismayed that your job was ripped from you so abruptly. Your best friend, the sweetest person on earth, insisted on you moving in with her in fear that you’d be evicted from your apartment.

Months passed, and you eventually found a small way to help your friend pay rent by offering singing and acting lessons online to musical-aspiring teenagers. Since you had gained many followers from your earlier work on social media, it didn’t surprise you when the classes became sold out.

Your friend also convinced you to create a YouTube channel for you to upload videos of yourself (sometimes joined by her) where you watched and commented shitty movies, followed DIY tutorials just for the fun of it, performed covers of your favorite songs, and just generally vlogged your life (along with reactions to Taylor Swift’s (From The Vault) songs).

At first, you thought it was pretty stupid, but you were delightfully proved wrong when your videos harbored over 200k-300k views on a bad day, so you found no reason to stop as COVID-19 continued, growing to gain a little over five hundred thousand followers. Your reactions were often used for TikTok audios or clips, so you found your popularity growing and evolving during that year.

You believed yourself to be a general, simple woman. People liked you because you were elegant and levelheaded, although you could sometimes be chaotic. You also had a subtle sense of humor that many found charming. But mostly, you grew a steady fan base because your videos and presence comforted countless young adults and teenagers.

You were an optimist and a reassuring one, so during the times when COVID was so prominent, people sought refuge from the monstrosities of the world in your videos, where you seemed to connect with them even though you were on the other side of the screen.

However, everything changed somewhere in 2020-2021. That evening, your best friend got home from work with excitement practically oozing out of her every pore. You and your best friend were avid anime watchers and manga readers, so you couldn’t help the face you made when she told you that One Piece was getting a live-action.

Although you were skeptical, your friend practically insisted you send an audition tape. You grimaced at that. It was well-known that live anime actions were almost always corny and cringeworthy compared to the original work, and people never liked them. You had learned that much from Death Note and a couple of others. However, your best friend convinced you with this argument:

“If it’s that bad, then at least you’ll gain more followers out of the memes that people will make, and if it’s good, you’ll still get famous anyway!”

Eventually, you sent a video of you performing one of the lengthy monologues from Fleabag to your agency and simply hoped for the best. Your friend was practically rooting for you to get the role of Anastasia, one of the first integrants of the Straw Hat crew, joining before Sanji and after Usopp. You adored her as she greatly reminded you of your late mother, although you would be happy with any role.

Somewhere in November 2021, you remember a lot of screaming and crying. When you try to look back on it, all you remember is the happiness you felt when you received confirmation of the role of Anastasia. You were practically over the moon, and you and your friend celebrated inside your small apartment. You were entirely alone, just two drunk girls dancing and cheering, until one of the neighbors knocked on the ceiling with a broom.

The One Piece fan base dearly loved the character of Anastasia, a well-mannered, bubbly, upbeat, fashion-loving duchess who always spoke in a Transatlantic accent but also had a quick wit and a bit of a sweet tooth. Anastasia’s dream was to become the most dangerous pirate to ever grace the seas and prove everyone who doubted her wrong.

Of course, with a big character came a big responsibility.

Sometimes, insecurity nearly got the better of you. You had to fill huge shoes, and there were many people to convince and impress. However, your love for this project was bigger than the gnawing uncertainty on the back of your neck, so you continued strongly until the end of Season One, finding comfort in your cast mates and the countless people who counted on you and, most importantly, believed in you.

Oda handpicked you, and that argument alone was enough to shoot any insecurities away.

Well, needless to say, people loved you!

Critics acclaimed your portrayal of the character, as well as the commendable chemistry you shared with the rest of the cast. The fans found it incredibly funny that your character was the complete opposite of how you actually acted in real life, and you often found yourself blissfully immersed in the fan base's love and praise.

Your channel and social media suddenly grew tenfold. Although you had stopped uploading videos every week due to the recording of season one, your followers were more than happy to wait for your return, and as one would expect, they were thrilled to have you back once you did upload a vlog explaining everything.

Over the course of the six months, you had been recording from time to time for a YouTube video in the set. Previously, you had asked the producers for permission to record some behind-the-scenes for your channel and your usual interactions with the rest of the cast with your personal Sony camera, as you felt it would be a nice way to bring the fans and the cast closer.

The producers gave the okay on the condition that you would wait until the first season aired on Netflix. You happily agreed and carefully began recording some scenes of your dressers and hairdressers as they prepared you, a few shots of your instructor showing you how you were supposed to use the guns that Anastasia employed... simple things.

Back in the day, you were still getting acquainted with the other cast members, and you didn't want to seem rude by forcibly making them appear on your videos, so you waited for a few weeks until you could properly call yourself companions. Then, you invited them to appear in the videos.

Iñaki, Taz, and Jacob liked to take advantage of the little free time they had between scenes they didn't appear in to innocently steal your camera and use it to their heart's content. One day, you got home only to find the memory card was completely full. It was an extensive video of them walking around the set, with Taz recording while Kiki and Jacob pointed out random stuff to the people who lived inside your camera, as Jacob liked to call them.

Mackenyu, being more reserved and introverted, mostly liked to act as a cameraman for you as you showed the props you used and other things, often making comments or turning the camera around whenever you referred to something.

Meanwhile, Emily had a natural knack for being in front of the camera. Whenever you asked her to join in, she effortlessly slipped into the co-host role, bantering with you and adding her own insights into the behind-the-scenes world of the show.

With the first season out of the way, you took the time to carefully pick what videos you wanted to use in the final tape, and it took you a little over a month and a half to properly edit it and turn it into a wonderful thirty-minute-long behind-the-scenes. You even sent it to the producers and your co-stars in case there was a scene they wanted deleted. Fortunately, they all gave you the okay.

You teased the video a bit on your Instagram before uploading it a few days later, and the support it received was out of this world. It gained over two million views and hundreds of thousands of likes.

You were kind of expecting this. While some BTS had already been uploaded on YouTube, yours was different because you were showing it from your perspective. The fans loved every second of it, and even started asking for a second or third part. You even saw new videos on YouTube of recompilations from your video with the titles being silly things like The One Piece Cast Being Chaotic for Seven Minutes.

At that moment, your life felt so full. You were getting contacted by industries who wanted you to appear on their videos and their stages, thousands of fans who loved you, and a feeling so peculiar that this would be eternal.

...but ya girl here has learned every one of these skips in my effort to get my Legendary time for Reach under 3 hours. Every one of these... except that DANG MASS DRIVER SKIP GAHHHHH. I cannot get the timing down. I've tried 3 different variations, one using a drop shield, one adding a grenade jump (great way to blow your shields off then shoot yourself with a concussion rifle, lol) and a ton of adjustments on jumping from that railing facing different directions, etc. Ugh.

The firefight section is just too long to not skip. If I can just get up there once and clear everything, I can actually get through the next section (that the second mass driver jump skips) by doing an absolutely mad YOLO run straight through the building, right at the Field Marshal with the fuel rod gun, and get to the stairs to trigger the end section to start. Then I hide from everybody and wait for the cue to shoot the Covvie ship.

But I just can't fight out that firefight section in less than, like, an hour. Par time for the entire level is 20 minutes soooooo...

Update! I made the jump for the first time, woo-hoo! Granted, this was after more than an hour of practice fails and then I immediately forgot which way to turn to do the second jump and got absolutely smoked by a really super rude Grunt. Hey, man, I just made that jump after a lot of practice and you shoot me down? SUPER RUDE. 😂😉

I was able to record this from the theater, (Georgette's Game Bar actually does work 🤷‍♀️😉) now to see if I can pop the unedited video into Ezgif and trim it down from there... (Still don't have Vegas so can't edit it first like I normally would have.)

Nope, had to use a site called VideoCandy to edit the video down small enough to get it into Ezgif, hence, the watermark on it. 😉Also, please pardon the fact I have my night vision on, I forgot to turn it off from the section before and so I respawn to the checkpoint with it on each try. 🤷‍♀️

hi! i'm also a gif maker, and i wanted to ask how do you deal with people stealing gifs? i'm not sure if you've had to deal with it but i've seen people use my gifs in posts and i was just wondering how'd you deal with it if it was you?

Hello dear :) this is actually something that has been on my mind these past days and weeks. I started making graphics and gifs quite some time ago when I was 15 (or something), so it’s been 13 years (big oof right there) by now, and yeah, I had to deal with it in the past. (more under the cut- this got too long)

It’s... frustrating, to put it mildly. There was this one girl who took my stuff, added a stupid Photoshop-brush, and actually put her watermark on it- I was furious. But what can we do, really? We do not own the material. Yes, we spend fucking HOURS working (with the coloring, cropping, re-sizing, you name it) on whatever graphic or gif, but in the end, we just don’t own it. Sure, we can slap our name on it, make it as prominent and visible as we like, but... who wants to ruin their work like that?! I used to add my name (barely visible) in the bottom right corner, but I stopped doing that. I just didn’t like it; it was awful.

So, as an adult (I sometimes have to remind myself that I am indeed an adult now, JFC), how do I deal with it?

First of all: Try not to take it too personal and/or be offended by it. Most people just don’t know. They do not know that posting stuff they didn’t make is bad (read: sucks ass).

Then: Message them- ask them to PLEASE add some credits (nooo, “credits to owner” does not count, fuck right off with that- pardon my French, please), or take your gifs down. (Maybe tell them to use the tumblr-gif-search?)

Like I said before, most people do not know better; I had people apologizing to me and then adding credits or (even better) reblog the original. But don’t get your hopes up, that doesn’t happen often. Just message them, try to be as polite as possible (the butthurt is very strong with a lot of people, believe me), and ask them to take your gifs down or credit you properly.

I’m sorry, this is probably not helpful at all :( I didn’t mean to rant. Just, don’t take it to heart or stop doing what you like, okay? ❤ Much love and take care!

Hey there! Heck yeah I can share a little bit about my next project! :D

So once I’m done with a Fatal_Error has Occurred and also give Sondertale a proper conclusion, I want to develop this game that I’ve been working on for several years now! It’s called Collision :)

I developed the story for it in like 2010 and in 2014 I actually got to work with some people during a class in college on developing my game. That experience was an absolute dumpster fire and honestly left me with such a bad taste in my mouth about this game that I literally didn’t look at what we made for like, a year. But in 2015 I had another look at everything and I remembered how badly I wanted to make this game. So ever since I’ve been planning out the design and game mechanics and I’m gonna make sure I see this idea through!

Collision will be a story-heavy, art-heavy game (of course) but I want the gameplay to be meaningful and additive to the experience. The main character is a young adult in his early 20′s who, after a very unnatural disaster and some less than fortunate series of events, ends up being roped into a hell of a scheme devised by three very adventurous people ;)

I don’t want to share too much just yet, since there’s a lot of be decided and ya’ll know I don’t do spoilers :) But here’s some screenshots, concept art, and sketches from the first attempt at development back in 2014. Please pardon the old art and the watermarks ^^;

Thoughts on Miraculous Content Creator Black Out and reposting

Guys, this is gonna be a serious post.  I’m still drowning in plushies and watching 6 hour long Norwegian train shows, but I saw this post by @lairep​ and felt I needed to add my 2 cents and educate the masses.  

To recap, an anonymous person sent Lai this in response to a post about how her fan comic was reposted to Instagram.

“...But they credited you... Thats not reposting. Its just like rebloging. Cause if you put something online people are allowed to share. You're being unfair to someone who clearly follows you here, maybe even a fan! Someone who probably just wanted everyone to see how good your fanart was”

Some of you may have heard of the Miraculous content creator blackout, which aims to bring awareness to things like this.  A lot of you may feel the same as the anonymous person, so let me put this into perspective for you.

What is the difference between reposting and reblogging?

Reblogging: Being on the same social media site as the artist and hitting the “share” button.  Congrats!  You’ve not only let someone know you like their fan work, you’re also not stealing their well-earned spotlight!

Reposting: Copying an artist’s post from one site and pasting it on your post in another site.  The only way this is ok is if you:

Have the artist’s permission

Remember to credit the content creator (artist/writer)

Leave everything the way it originally is (including captions/watermarks)

Link back to the creator’s account

if your site won’t let you link back to their site, DON’T POST THEIR ART

(unless the original creator is ok with this)

If you do not do this, you are stealing.  End of story.

Here’s the thing, guys...Every social media site has a policy against reposting and if you do not follow the above guidelines, you CAN BE REPORTED AS VIOLATING POLICY.  Here is Tumblr’s, for reference.

Tumblr even has a link directly in their policy page to report this crap.  That should tell you what you’re doing is bad.

Also, it takes like 5 minutes to Google how to credit someone else’s art.  If you don’t know how to do that, you probably shouldn’t be on the internet unsupervised.

The artist/writer doesn’t own these characters, so they can’t claim copyright infringement, bro!

You’re half right there, pal.  They don’t own the copyright.  However, many people who do own the copyright (Miraculous included) support and even encourage fan works, as long as they don’t make money from it.  They won’t get in trouble for it.  However, YOU WILL.  They may not own the characters, but they still created that piece of art or writing and, therefore, you are stealing their creation.  Tumblr calls this misattribution, which is a fancier way of saying reposting.  

It seems a lot of these reposters go to Instagram, probably because they can hide behind the confusing legal jargon of their policy page.  However, their reporting for fanart reposting falls under “Intellectual Property”, which you can report violations of here.  This is Instagram’s policy:

You may say “but the fan creator doesn’t own the character!”.  No, but they own their distinctive art style.  Sorry, sports fan.  That falls under intellectual property, which you have now stolen.

But, I’m bringing exposure to this person’s work!

First of all, excuse you.  You’re bringing exposure to yourself.  Even if you link to the person who created the fan work, most of your followers are just going to hit “like” and move onto videos of cats dabbing or something.  I dunno.  It’s the internet.  Most of the exposure generated by this will be new followers for you.  The original person will be lucky if they get a handful of people that see that “original credit goes to blah blah on Tumblr” blurb you stuck at the bottom of your desperate grab for attention post.

Even if you are Suzy Snowflake and you’re pure and innocent and really do want to bring exposure to the artist/writer, ask permission.  Make them aware that you’re bringing them exposure.  Unless you don’t want them to respond with “please don’t repost” and that’s why you’re not contacting them.  Hmmm...

If you put something online, people are allowed to share it.

Sure.  Tell that to Napster.  Or, I don’t know, every comic book artist out there.  Most of these people don’t own the characters in their art, and do fan art outside of work to post on their personal social media sites.  Even fan art of a character they’ve never been associated with.  When that art gets stolen, you can bet they have every right to report it.

Here’s something else to keep in mind.  If the copyright holder has a bad day and suddenly decides they’re going after people for creating fan works, you’re not only gonna be in trouble for reposting, you’ll also be contributing to copyright infringement.  Good luck getting a lawyer to side with you on that one.

I guess you were waiting for the tl;dr portion of this post?  If so, here you go you lazy ass.  

Fanart is only illegal if:

A)  The copyright holder does not support fans creating it (Miraculous encourages not for profit fan works)

B)  The fan work creator is making a profit from the work, and the copyright holder cares enough about that to sue (Hint:  Most of them don’t, which is why commissions are prevalent)

Reposting is not breaking the law unless you’re reposting original art that is copyrighted.  It IS against the policy of social media sites and could result in your account being frozen.  Also, there’s the negative backlash once your followers find out you stole someone else’s fan work.

One last thing to consider:  this fandom has had so many problems with fan art theft that talented artists like my husband have shied away from making what could have been some miraculous (pardon the pun) fan works.  I told him about why content creators were going on strike and he’s abandoned plans to do any more Miraculous fan art.  Reposting not only hurts current content creators, but makes potential ones think twice about contributing. 

And you guys probably would like him to contribute to this fandom.

Located in the middle of nowhere in Madhya Pradesh, central India, the 1,000 year old Khajuraho temples are one of the most amazing — and overlooked — destinations in the country. I spent a week here producing a film on the annual Khajuraho Dance Festival but since that was a nighttime event, I used the daytime to capture drone footage of the temples. It was this act that resulted in my arrest. Thankfully, after 12 hours in custody I was pardoned by the CM of Madhya Pradesh, released, and given my drone back. This is my story.

Getting Arrested For Filming The Khajuraho Temples

  How Did This Happen?

When I first landed in Khajuraho, little did I know that 48 hours later I would be arrested. Why? For flying a drone over the Khajuraho temples, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986. However now I have the world’s only aerial video footage of the Western Temples in Khajuraho — something not even the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board has been able to receive permission to film.

Prior to my arrival in Khajuraho, I had emailed MP Tourism to obtain my media pass for the Khajuraho Dance Festival and inquire about flying my drone over the temples. Needless to say, they were a bit busy with the festival and did not respond. I obtained my media pass elsewhere and decided to do a few test flights while waiting for a response.

Little did I know that my hotel and the hotel next door were fighting with each other. Why does not matter, what matters is that the owner of the hotel next door saw me launching a drone off the rooftop and decided to take action. He called the police, the ASI (Archeological Survey of India) and the reporters, who all simultaneously converged on my hotel while I was still flying high over the Western Temples.

  The police did not want to arrest me, however the ASI wanted me “arrested and made example of” — and since the reporters were already on the scene, the police had no choice but to arrest me, take me to jail and confiscate my drone.

Exploring the 25 Khajuraho temples of Madhya Pradesh

Sitting inside the small Khajuraho jail hiding my face from the reporters and listening to all the arguing between the ASI and police was very entertaining. Over the last 12 years, I have literally travelled the breadth and length of India. I’ve seen the sun rise at the tip of India in Kanyakumari, I’ve watched dolphins swim in the Ganges, I’ve fallen asleep on a sand dune in Rajasthan listening to the gurgle of camels and — along with Derek — I’ve been the first person in to see the Taj Mahal in the morning. But among all the wonders that India offers the intrepid visitor, there are almost none as sublime, as beautiful, and as uplifting as the Khajuraho temples.

These ancient temples were almost lost to the onslaught of nature until they were rediscovered in the 19th century. Now, they are splendidly preserved and protected by the ASI in a small, remote village in central India. I love both the chill vibe of the town of Khajuraho and the magnificently carved temples, which are considered by many to be the best in India. It’s an inspiring place and I can well understand Derek’s interest in capturing all of this beauty on video. The world only thinks of the Taj Mahal when it thinks of India. Most people have no idea about the incalculable treasures that can be found from one end of India to the other.

So please enjoy the video, which was captured with some risk. I hope I have done my small part to make the beauty of India more accessible to the world. Thanks to everyone else, too, who helped make this story turn out well, with a happy ending. The kind we all like 🙂

After 12 hours in custody the amazing Shivraj Singh Chouhan, CM of Madhya Pradesh, sent his assistant to Khajuraho. She arrived with a military escort, walked into the jail and said “Release this man and return his drone.” Within minutes I was a free man again being given an apology and a ride back to my hotel 😀

  The Aftermath

After my release, I became a local celebrity in Khajuraho and was given VIP treatment the rest of my time there. Since my photo made the front page of several newspapers and I was easily recognizable, countless locals approached me asking for aerial photos of their restaurants, hotels or businesses. The kind folks at MP Tourism took me out around Madhya Pradesh and even up one of the mountains for another drone flight. I also received several gifts, including countless copies of the newspapers with my story on the front page from locals — my favorite gift of all 🙂
