Diily’s old friend nightsaber sanctuary headcanons or just random headcanons about her sabers

She is genuinely baffled when people describe cats as cold and aloof. Clearly they’ve never been close with one if they thought that. They’re very demanding when they want cuddles and they want a lot of them. They just want them on their own terms and she respects that

She play wrestles with them constantly and finds it amusing when people freak out. She knows who she can trust enough to roughhouse with and who she can’t. Some sabers have less self control than others. She has the scars to prove it. She never blames the cat though. She knows it’s her own fault. They’re just doing what they were made to do.

Whitestorm one of her pure white frostsabers (am I stealing some of my fav warrior cats names on some of them?) was being trained and she made the mistake of traveling through Elwynn forest and well she ended up having to pay a farmer handsomely for his lost sheep. It’s not the first or last time this has happened

He tried to pretend he didn’t do it but he’s all white so..it’s not like he could hide the blood. Diily never punishes them because why would she for them doing what they were born to do? However she does double down on training them not to attack certain things until ordered to. It’s an exercise in self control for them really.

She’s taken to putting a “I need space” bandana on the sabers still be socialized or ones who are just moody. She saw it on a dog and thought it was a brilliant idea

She then proceeded to put one on Alaluria and Gaillen. Alaluria kept it

Full grown riding sabers may be huge but they don’t usually consider themselves to be. You can often find them sprawled across Diily who’s most likely just accepted her fate

They are big and demand cuddles. Give them the cuddles or they will..cuddle you anyway and there’s nothing you can do about it

They are apex predators. Designed by evolution to do one thing kill. Anything can be prey..including tiny bugs like flies. And this is as disastrous as you can imagine. Full grown nightsaber knocking furniture over and bowling over people to get to said fly.

Cubs however get more wiggle room and Diily will lift them up in the air and chase after flies so they can catch them. It’s hilarious. It’s even more hilarious if one or both of her sisters have a cub too and it’s like a competition (the saviors of Azeroth everybody..)

The laser pointer was an amazing discovery for Diily and she’s spent hours making them chase after the mysterious uncatchable red dot. She feels bad after a while and gives em a treat

Teething cubs are..Diily has scars all over hands. Her sisters do too. Many nightsaber handlers do if they deal with cubs frequently.

Ever had to take care of a nightsaber with a toothache? It’s more pathetic than frightening really. “You’re an apex predator you big baby”

She does have a rather decent array of veterinary knowledge. Some her mother taught her and the rest she learned in her 10,000+ years on Azeroth.

She stays in Stormwind and Dalaran frequently and honestly culture clashes are kind of hilarious. Apparently it is NOT acceptable to cut up mice in the middle of town for your new-just-starting-to-eat-solids cubs and this will cause people to send the guards to get you for some reason and then your boyfriend will have to bail you out

Nor is it acceptable to give your boyfriend dead animals at his workplace. Which honestly is kind of ridiculous if you ask her but whatever you say Khadgar

Bloodsicles are absolutely terrifying to most humans apparently. They’re not for her, you dimwits. Although..she has tasted them before out of curiosity (shhh) ...Alaluria kind of likes them

Rough housing is just sort of the Wintermoon daily schedule. It amuses Diily and her sisters how shocked people can be when they see them wrestling with her cats. And sure she’s gotten hurt by accident several times playing with them (they’re big buy don’t mean to usually) but she’s gotten hurt rough housing with Alaluria and Ladelia far more times. Especially Alaluria.

Shadowfang (Alaluria’s nightsaber turned felsaber) loves Illidan so much. Partially because he saved her life by using the fel to transform ber into a felsaber and also because she knows Alaluria loves him so..

Sometimes he gives her scratches when no one is looking. Shhhhh.

She likes to bring him dead demons and he’ll be like “go find me something bigger” and it was like a running joke with him and the cat. She never got a chance to bring him a pitlord though :/ to be fair Alaluria does the same thing to his amusement and satisfaction. (Weirdo)

The thing is..no night elf is immune to nightsaber charms. Even Illidan “The Betrayer” Stormrage. In very rare moments at the temple he’d sit with them and he’d pet her absentmindedly without even thinking about it.

He misses his nightsaber. No one really knows what happened to her besides him and he never talks about it. He does have a long fang in his chambers though. It’s customary for a night elf to keep the fang of their saber once they pass.

Her purr is bizarre and warped sounding now but it’s still cute to Alaluria. She loves her fel infused baby with all her heart.

Diily warmed to Illidan just a little more when she saw him petting Shadow.

Ashenvale was like a gut punch to her. The horde killed the sabers first (sadly this is canon via the book) so the night elves wouldn’t be able to ride away to get reinforcements

She wept for them just as much as she wept for her sisters in arms. And filled her with even more rage. How could you be so heartless? (I think that’s what made me finally burst into actual tears while reading)

there are members of the horde who decided to gloat openly about this. They won’t gloat about anything ever again

Sabers are not usually solitary. They live in prides like lions do. It’s how they were able to successfully be domesticated over millions of years. Similar to humans with wolves and then dogs.

They love unconditionally. It’s not uncommon for a saber to die by their handler’s side because they refuse to leave them even after their body has long been cold. They will die to protect their handlers. Without question and without hesitation.

Diily feels it’s only fair they receive the same unconditional love and loyalty back. Nothing pisses her off more than someone mistreating their nightsaber. How dare you? You have to be a special kind of monster to hurt one when they’ve done nothing but love you.

Nightsabers are incredibly long lived. Which is kind of canon. Tyrande has had hers for thousands upon thousands of years. I couldn’t tell you how or why they are but they are as long-lived as their elven companions.

It’s incredibly difficult to rehome a saber after they lose their rider. They tend to become very aggressive and standoffish. It takes a lot of time and patience and TLC to help them move on.

Sometimes wisps play with nightsabers. No one could know whether or not they knew the nightsaber in their lifetime or if they’re just fond of them but they’ll drift close and then of paws reach, letting them chase them (paws will just go right through them) interestingly enough their claws are always sheathed when doing this. As if they know it’s play

Diily has had to teach her cats not to hunt ravens after an unfortunate incident with Khadgar. He was fine but he never wants to be caught between a saber’s jaws again lmao. It was very unpleasant.

Some like to swim some don’t. Many do though if they’re introduced to water as cubs. Diily has so much fun with it.

Diily commands them in Darnassian. It’s kind of amusing to watch an enemy’s face pale when she says something they can’t understand and suddenly there’s a very large saber advancing towards them. “Kill.” Is the command you don’t want though because cute as they are they do that very well.

She enjoys the hunt as much as they do.

She usually doesn’t let them eat corpses of people unless she has absolutely no respect for the person they killed. It’s kind of macabre but her sabers have to eat after all..

There’s a myth that once they’ve tasted human flesh they’ll become man-eaters and Diily finds it amusing because all of them have tasted human flesh and they’re no different than they were before. “Who’s mama’s little man-eater? You are!”

There are so many morphs and subspecies. Especially once tigers started becoming common pets. You can find some very unique colors and patterns. Although most night elves don’t allow them to mix with other species.

Dental hygiene is important and you can find Diily brushing their fangs sometimes and it’s just very amusing.

They usually keep their own claws trimmed if the ripped up tree trunks are any indication.

Like any animal they can have behavioral issues. Food aggression, fear aggression, etc. you just have to know how to read them and work with them.

They’re very in tune with their owners and usually you can tell when an elf doesn’t like someone even if they have the sweetest smile on their face..because their saber is acting particularly aggressive around that person.

On the flip side they like people who their owners like. Usually.

Don’t be fooled Diily has scars from making mistakes with sabers. Moving too fast, too close too soon, turning her back on an untrained one. She never blames them though. Not even for a second. It’s her fault. They’re doing what they were born to do.

They are bottomless pits. They are always hungry and act like they’re starving but they just ate an entire moose. Don’t be fooled by the big eyes and cute meows.

They are big cats but they’re still cats. They knock things over for no reason. They LOVE boxes. They get the zoomies.

Fat sabers exist. It’s not healthy naturally but god damn it..you can’t help but find it cute when you see one.

Don’t make jokes about turning her cats into coats or rugs. Just..don’t.

Some like being brushed and pampered some don’t. It just depends on the saber.

They are very intelligent. Sometimes they seem as intelligent as their elven companions. Honestly they are.

Chapter 14: Team Lionheart

Jessie was panting hard as she dodged Orion. A giant monster. An alien parasite that had taken over a human. And the only thought in Jessie's mind was that maybe it hadn't been the best idea. Sure, she and Jessie had spent two weeks training – both physically and with their powers – but still, learning control and being out there, fighting against actual aliens? That was... different.

“On your left, Virgo!”, called Jessie out loudly.

Lizzy rolled over rather elegantly and rammed her claws into Orion's leg, making him roar. Sadly, it also made Orion angry and the giant lashed out at Lizzy in anger. Jessie threw one of her knives, with perfect precision, to hit Orion right between the eyes. Orion wailed and went down. With wide eyes did Jessie watch how the monster shrank, as though it was melting, though goo was melting off until a normal human being was left, unconscious.

“Okay”, whispered Jessie awe-struck. “That's... disturbing.”

The goo gathered into a glass-marble, a muddy brown tone. Lizzy picked it up and rolled it around, frowning curiously at it. It wasn't unlike their own, really. Looking at Jessie, she pocketed it.

“Split up, get changed, regroup at my place”, stated Lizzy before taking off.

Lizzy giggled to herself, less because something was funny and more because it was the aftermath of the adrenaline running through her veins. She collapsed onto her couch and stretched out. This was amazing, the rush of the fight. She had never really understood it, when Ricky talked about the rush it gave him to save a life. Now? Now, Lizzy understood it, really understood.

The door opened and Jessie slipped in, a grin on her face before she joined Lizzy on the couch. Moments later and their companions appeared from the hidden jewelry. A trick that the aliens had taught them; because a loose marble was easily lost. Jessie had converted hers into a pin, the bright-red jewel of Aries in the center and four smaller ones flanking out, two on either side. Lizzy's was an ear-ring, three orange jewels on top of each other, the largest one, the one of Virgo, at the bottom.

“Okay. So, we beat the bad guys, they turn into gems?”, asked Lizzy curiously.

“Essentially, yes”, replied Virgo, purring softly and pawing at the couch.

“Why's it looking different than ours?”, inquired Jessie, touching the marble.

It was opaque glass, milky like the glass door of their shower. Unlike her Zodiac marble, which was smooth glass. Aries made a small sound and shook his head at her.

“Because it answers to a different authority”, replied Aries solemnly.

“Wha—at does that even mean?”, asked Lizzy confused.

“We are part of the so-called Zodiac Alliance. The planetary alliance of this solar system. But there are... more. More who don't belong to the alliance; free planets, if you will”, replied Aries.

“Right. If my math ain't failing me, we do not have twelve planets in our solar system... uh... right?”, asked Jessie doubtful. “Like, how can there be a Zodiac Alliance of the planets of this solar system and then there are still planets left over...?”

“Oh, that's a translation problem”, offered Virgo as the cat rolled onto her back and started pawing at the air. “Your language doesn't have a proper word for what we define as a 'planet'. Your word for it is the closest, I guess. But we don't have your silly categories of planet and... dwarf planet... like size doesn't really matter you know... and asteroids.”

“How do you not have a word for asteroids?”, inquired Lizzy doubtfully.

“Oh no, we do. But most fall into the same category as what we call a 'planet'. Basically, a celestial body that is capable of harboring life”, supplied Aries. “For example, what you call a 'planet' would not necessarily fall under what we call a 'planet' if it can't sustain life. There is a different word for it then, because what matters is whether or not they harbor life.”

Lizzy tilted her head curiously. That... made sense, she supposed. Even the best alien technology couldn't translate something when there was no word for it. And them having a word specifically for inhabited worlds compared to simply for planets... It made Lizzy wonder just how many inhabited worlds there were in their solar system, while at the same time being terrified of the answer.

“Okay, so some planets are part of this alliance, others aren't. And there's... a war. And Earth got dragged into the middle of this?”, asked Lizzy thoughtfully.

“Basically”, replied Virgo and nodded. “We were sent to clean up discreetly. It's the highest priority for the alliance to avoid humans at large to learn about the truth, because... your species is not yet ready to face it. Your infighting, not just among your countries and nations, but even the people within a country, there is... too much war in humans' hearts to tell them what's out there.”

“Fair enough”, huffed Lizzy and crossed her arms uncomfortably. “White folks have this habit of going to new places and claiming them as theirs when there are any sort of resources that might be useful for them. If there'd be gold on the moon, there'd be war over the moon.”

“That's why the Lepi keep their gold a secret”, muttered Aries beneath his breath.

Lizzy opened and closed her mouth a couple times. “First of all, are you telling me there is life on the moon. Second of all, are you telling me there is gold on the moon.”

“Your moon is one of the planets in the Zodiac Alliance”, replied Aries with a nod. “It is where we have stationed our observatory to keep an eye on Earth and track your progress.”

“What are you thinking about that, red bean?”, Lizzy, swatting at Jessie.

“I'm thinking about an old friend from Dublin. Nor would have a field day with this”, whispered Jessie. “She was all up in those conspiracy theories. This'd blow her mind.”

“Girl, it's blowing my mind and I am not into conspiracy theories”, grunted Lizzy.

“What happened?”

Lizzy startled at the concern in her fiance's voice. And then she winced as he pressed against the bruise on her upper right thigh. Right. That. Figured he'd worry about that. Damn. She hadn't considered that. Hadn't really thought about... the fact that she'd be keeping a secret from Ricky.

She furrowed her brows at that and swallowed dry. She loved him, with all her heart. In her mind, the only logical conclusion had always been for them to be a team, in all aspects of life.

“I stumbled, when I was out with Jessie earlier. Don't worry about it, babe.”

Smiling, she cupped Rick's face and kissed him softly. He didn't look entirely convinced, looked concerned as he leaned in, chasing after her for a second kiss. This man was honestly too good and too pure. With her smile growing, she leaned in to kiss him again.

“Really. I'm fine”, assured Lizzy gently. “How are you?”

Rick groaned in a drawn-out way and collapsed backward onto their bed. “Honestly, these... superheroes? They're making my job both easier and harder at the same time.”

“How so?”, inquired Lizzy with furrowed brows.

She laid down next to him, gently running her fingers through Rick's curls. “I know me and Mikey aren't equipped to handle those... meta-humans or whatever they are. But...”

“But?”, echoed Lizzy carefully, tracing Ricky's cheek. “Talk to me, love.”

“They don't have training. Not the necessary kind. Keeping civilians outta danger, how to deescalate a situation instead of charge in head-first. And the more of those heroes pop up, the wilder it gets, you know? Especially since they don't seem to... communicate. They're disorganized”, replied Rick. “It's like, yesterday, during our shift, there was an attack from a giant-ass... something. I think it was something like an elephant but not entirely and the colors were off too. Anyway, so this thing had attacked city hall. And the... the green one and the yellow one had come at it from one side, while the red one and the purple one came at it from another side but they seemed to be fighting more among themselves than actually against the thing attacking them.”

Taurus and Sagittarius were part of a team, but they did seem to edge on with Leo and Scorpio. Lizzy had seen that too. She wondered why though. Well, in a way she knew. Virgo and Aries had told them that some might side with the wrong fraction. Depending on what kind of political climate there was, what promises were made, even those from within the Zodiac Alliance could make a wrong choice, could be tempted to side with the wrong crowd.

“Things would be easier if the heroes would unite”, mused Lizzy softly.

“Probably”, agreed Rick and wrapped an arm around Lizzy's shoulder. “And now two more popped up, you know? An orange one and another red one. Well, a very bright red.”

“I... hope they won't be causing any problems for you”, offered Lizzy, feeling a bit awkward.

“So do I, mi amor”, sighed Rick, pulling Lizzy in close enough to kiss her temple. “I think it's time for sleep. It's already late and I don't see tomorrow being any less chaotic. This city is... the epicenter of something dangerous and huge. I just... I wonder why.”

“Maybe they don't like the movie industry?”, suggested Lizzy playfully.

Rick snorted amused. “I mean, Hollywood's been hit a lot. Still... I wonder...”

Lizzy paused too. That was true. Why Los Angeles? She wondered if any of the other heroes had already found out what it meant? Why did the aliens pick Los Angeles specifically?

Babs furrowed her eyebrows as she watched the newbies. Her and Jamie were in the middle of battling the Hydra – one of the big three that kept returning. Most of the minor villains were relatively easily to defeat, but they seemed more high-ranking? Hydra always gave them quite the hard time. The multiple heads didn't help either. Babs was pinned by two heads, while Jamie was battling another head, already wounded from the Hydra's claws.

So, sure, they could use the backup. But the newest of the newbies? Virgo and Aries. There was something off about them though. Something eerily familiar, Babs just couldn't put her finger on it.

“Damn it”, hissed Jamie, his breath coming out shortly.

Right, Babs had more important things on her mind than the newbies. Jamie was injured and they still had the Hydra to take care of, preferably before Hydrus came to join (those two were mostly spotted together. Babs suspected that they were partners, much like her and Jamie).

“Woah there, you shouldn't get distracted out in the field!”, declared Aries.

Babs stared at the heroine. Skin-tight, bright-red leather, utility belt in place with the sheaths of her daggers, her hazelnut brown hair flowing in familiar, broad waves. Aries turned toward Babs and Babs' eyes were drawn to Aries' very deep v-cleavage. She knew those boobs.

“Jessie”, hissed Babs, eyebrows shooting up high before her head snapped over to Virgo – the incredibly tall, dark-skinned beauty. “...Lizzy. Oh, you gotta be kidding me.”

Aries – Jessie – stumbled and stared doe-eyed up at her in utter confusion. Probably not figuring out considering Babs had made sure her superhero-persona had her secret identity better hidden. The dark-purple hair compared to her normal neon-green hair helped a lot.

“Just... meet me on the balcony after this, Jess”, hissed Babs.

Jessie frowned but she nodded before returning her attention to the fight. This was escalating. First Tanya, now Jessie and Lizzy? Something was going on and it's starting to be suspicious.

Still, the four of them managed to chase Hydra away for now. Babs went to help Jamie, supporting him as she led him toward their apartment. They entered through the balcony – which was where they usually slipped away from for missions and back in, since the balcony was only accessible from Jamie and Babs' rooms. She dumped Jamie on her own bed. She tugged open his leather hoodie, unlacing it and pushing it out of the way to take a look at the long gashes on his side. Jamie groaned, eyes squeezed shut tightly. The gash was nasty and Babs knew she could throw her bed-sheets out after this because he was bleeding all over it. Taking a deep breath, Babs closed her eyes and pressed her hands onto his side, feeling the water in his very cells and working on knitting them together again. She had practiced her healing over the past weeks and now she was glad for it.

“Will you finally accept that we need back-up?”, growled Babs frustrated.

“What? Why?”, hissed Jamie, breath ragged.

Babs heaved a sigh and left for the bathroom to wash her hands and get a wet, cold towel for Jamie. Returning to her own room, she started carefully cleaning up his chest. He looked pale.

“You're an obnoxious idiot”, sighed Babs, tracing the now new scars with the towel. “Absoluter Vollpfosten... We're only two people. There are so many monsters. We'd be far more effective if we fought alongside others instead of trying to make this a solo-gig. Duo-gig. Please be reasonable. I can't have you nearly die on me every other week.” [German trans: complete jackass]

“There's no one we can trust”, growled Jamie lowly.

He closed his eyes again and collapsed back onto the bed, struggling with his breathing. Babs ran her fingers through her hair, shaking a little. She closed her eyes, tears in the corners of them. This was... This was not what she had pictured. Sure, she should have known better. She had watched all of Sailor Moon and they literally all died within the first season. Twice, technically if you count the fact that it starts off with their rebirths. Still, she had somehow – romanticize the whole thing, she supposed. No. No, screw Jamie's fears – she loved him, she really did, and she knew exactly where his fears came from, but in this case, his fears were only making their lives harder.

Taking a deep breath, Babs rested her hands on her thighs and pushed herself off the bed. When she walked out of her bedroom, Virgo and Aries were standing outside, looking tense and confused. Heaving a sigh when looking at them, Babs closed her eyes for a moment and let her costume melt away, revealing her green-haired self, wearing her favorite striped dress and her purple leather-jacket, just as she had before they had run out into action.

“Holy shit, green-bean, you're--”, stuttered Lizzy stunned.

She and Jessie turned back to their normal selves too, looking startled and exchanging a look. In the end, Jessie was the one to step forward and pull Babs into a tight embrace.

“Oh god, I'm so relieved that you're one too”, gasped Jessie out, clinging onto her.

“How...”, whispered Babs with a confused frown.

“Andy found those two marbles and he gave them to me, since he knows I'm an Aries. And one was Virgo so I gave it to Lizzy”, replied Jessie. “But what about you?”

“Well, Leo and Scorpio crashed on our balcony four months ago”, offered Babs. “And Jamie and I have been out there for the past three of them.”

“Wait. Jamie...”, drawled Jessie, eyes wide before she gasped. “But he got hurt so badly-”

“He's fine”, assured Babs gently, grasping her shoulders. “I healed him.”

“You what now?”, asked Lizzy, pushing between them to look at Babs.

Babs grinned broadly up at them. “Been exploring your powers yet? Because mine is water and the human body is made of a lot of that. I can... with enough concentration, I can manipulate the human body on a cellular level. I've been honing my skills, there's a lot of potential in controlling water.”

“Okay, that's... cool”, whispered Jessie surprised. “I've been just... playing with fire.”

“We're also still new to our powers. Like, I got some theoretical ideas of what to do with earth-powers, but I've barely managed to manipulate it”, offered Lizzy with a frown.

“You'll get better with your powers”, assured Babs with an amused look. “Come inside. I think the four of us gotta talk about some things.”

Jamie just wanted to rest, because everything hurt. He had his eyes closed, but he still heard the steps back into the room. With a frown, he turned to look because those were more than just one person. His eyes widened when he saw Babs enter the room with Jessie and Lizzy.

“What are you doing, Babara?”, hissed Jamie.

“Well, only the full first name so he's not that bad”, muttered Babs to herself.

Jamie squinted irritated at that. “Babara Brunhilde Burkhart. Explain yourself.”

Babs wiggled her nose at that and came to stand in front of Jamie. “Boy without facial recognition, while we were fighting, I recognized Aries as your sister and Virgo as Lizzy.”

“...No, no, no”, whispered Jamie and shook his head.

His little sister shouldn't be dragged into this. He meant to protect her. Jamie tried to take a deep breath as he sat up. He winced as pain shot up his side. Okay, as much as he was fighting Babs on this, but she might be right with how much he put himself in danger.

“You're a single father”, whispered Babs gently and knelt down in front of Jamie, resting her hands on his knees. “If something happens to you, you're leaving Ally and Andy all alone.”

Great, now she was tugging on his heart-strings. He closed his eyes. Okay, sure, another good point. He loved those kids. He wanted them to be safe and the best way for that would be for him to be safe. His eyes flickered over toward Lizzy and Jessie behind him.

“Fine”, whispered Jamie. “But only because I'm not letting my sister run around out there without me there to back her up. But you two gotta listen.”

Lizzy didn't look pleased by this and opened her mouth to argue, but Babs beat her to it. “He actually knows what he's doing, Liz. I know you're the kind of person who takes charge too, but... in the past three months? He's made some amazing calls for us both.”

“Fine”, sighed Lizzy. “We can see how it's going. Try to work together.”

The three girls sat down and watched Jamie for a moment while he adjusted himself slowly. The pain was a bitch, even though it would fade soon – he had been healed by Babs often enough by now. Which, also spoke to her point about having more people on their team.

“The only real question I have now is... how?”, mused Babs with furrowed brows. “I mean, this is... beyond a coincident. How did four outta twelve Zodiacs end up in our home? That's not a rhetoric question, by the way. One of you four aliens come out and explain.”

Their gems glowed and Scorpio, Leo, Virgo and Aries appeared in the room. Jamie arched one eyebrow at them. Aries was rather obviously a ram, but the virgin maiden? An... orange cat with wings? Actually, no. Jamie was in too much pain to even find that odd right now.

“These were the coordinates we were heading to”, supplied Leo with a tilt of his head. “Our boss sent us here. The four of us landed here but were separated by the others, probably. The others must have come down in the close vicinity.”

“Why?”, asked Lizzy, her arms crossed. “I mean, why LA? What's so great about LA?”

“You gotta ask the opposition”, replied Leo with a drawl.

He was bumping his head against Virgo, the three felines cuddling together. Lizzy raised both eyebrows and turned to look first at Jessie and then at Jamie and Babs. Freezerburn Week- Day 8: Fire and Ice

The first meeting between Yang, warrior of the fire drakes, and Weiss, princess of the ice drakes, was nearly a fatal one.

It happened when the latter was patrolling the area where the territories of the stronger, more fortunate ice drakes ended, and the homes of the weaker ones began. Ice for building was harvested from further north and made the walls of the palace where Weiss’s father, the Ice Dragon, lived. It also housed several higher-ups and warriors. The lesser drakes had to settle with igloos of snow, or huts of frozen mud.

Weiss found the fire drake intruder hunched by one of the noble homes, whose owner was likely out hunting. The creature’s golden scales had been smudged with mud, likely as a disguise, and her sharp, black claws were sawing at the wall.

Snarling, Weiss charged the fire drake, tackling her into a small copse of trees. Immediately, her paws burned under the heat of her opponent’s scales.

The fire drake recoiled as if she too was being burned, slashing at Weiss’s face as she jumped back. The two circled each other, taking in the sight of the other.

Weiss was a worthy ice drake, bearing pure white scales, sharp, icicle-like spines, and eyes as cold and blue as a winter’s sky. Her teeth glinted, as did her ivory-colored claws.

Her opponent, she could now see, was likely pure gold under her mud disguise. Steam rose from her paws, which melted the snow into puddles. She had a sleeker look than the sharp ice drakes, and had black claws and curling ebony horns, as well as a triangle-tipped tail.

The two stopped circling, then dove at each other again, though the fight was excruciating for both of them. Neither could hold the other for long without feeling the burn of ice or fire driving them back. One would bite down on hard scales, only to recoil with a hiss. Another would try to get a good grip, only to yelp and lick her paw pads while backing away.

Still, neither was ready to surrender. They jumped at each other again and again, moving forward and backward, backward and forward, circling around.

It was almost like…a dance.

Something shifted in the air as Weiss realized this. She was just in the process on biting down once more on her enemy’s shoulder, but withdrew without even trying to break through the rock-hard scales this time. She tossed her head, her crest on full display in a show of dominance.

The two sprang apart just as suddenly as they came together, panting with exhaustion, staring at each other with wide, confused eyes. Weiss’s crest slowly went down as she regarded the fire drake.

“What is your name?” she asked primly, trying not to sound too flustered at how easily this encounter had turned from hostile to flirtatious.

“Yang,” the fire drake replied, her tail lashing nervously. “So, what now?”

“Why don’t you tell me why you’re intruding on ice drake lands?” Weiss huffed, deciding that handling this in a to-the-point manner was the best option. “And destroying a warrior’s home?”

“I wasn’t destroying it,” Yang muttered, licking her shoulder where Weiss had managed to draw a little blood. “I just needed a piece.”

“Oh, just a piece of someone else’s home? Is that all?” Weiss drawled.

“I didn’t know where else to get some!” Yang protested. “If I’d gone further north, I’d have been swarmed.” She paused, a cocky grin spreading across her muzzle. “Though, if all ice drakes go for courting maneuvers while battling, I might be in for a fun time.”

“Oh, shut up!” Weiss snapped. “We were evenly-matched and tired. Those were weak battle moves, and nothing more!”

“If you say so.”  Yang yawned obnoxiously. “Can I go?”

“Not until you tell me why you needed a piece of ice,” Weiss insisted.

“My uncle is sick,” Yang growled impatiently. “His stomach’s hurting, and he was complaining about being too hot. Fire drakes are only too hot when we’re sick. I thought chewing on a piece of ice would help. I couldn’t carry back snow, since that would melt in my paws. I figured I could get a piece of ice and hurry back before it melted all the way.”

Weiss’s crest flattened entirely. She could see the sullen worry in the other drake’s eyes and somehow knew that she wasn’t lying. She didn’t bother asking why Yang hadn’t simply come and asked for ice. Her father had a deep hatred for the fire drakes and had an order out to kill any that intruded. Technically, Weiss was breaking the law by not actively trying to kill this one.

And yet, she could still feel a weirdly-pleasant tingle in her scales. She had engaged in courtship behaviors with a stranger, a female, and a fire drake. It was everything her father hated, which gave her every reason to be a little excited.

“I will escort you to the border,” Weiss said, keeping her voice calm. “If you stay on your side, I’ll bring you a piece of ice.”

Yang’s jaw dropped, and her tail thumped against the ground. “Wait, really? You’d do that?”

“If you stay in your territory from now on,” Weiss said firmly. “If you intrude again, I’ll be forced to attack.”

“What if I’d enjoy that?” Yang asked, a teasing glint in her eye, a sensual purr in her throat.

“Do you want the ice, or not?”

“Okay, okay. It’s a deal.” Yang grinned easily. “Thanks.” As the two started back toward the border, hiding carefully by every patch of trees and bushes they found, she spoke up again. “So, what’s your name?”

“Weiss.”

“Weiss, huh?” Yang nodded. “Well, it’s real ice to meet you.”

“I will turn around and leave you right now.”

“Aw, don’t be so cold,” Yang laughed, but she held her tongue the rest of the way there.

It didn’t take Weiss long to find a piece of ice near the palace and run back to the border. As she placed it on the ground, she was surprised when the fire drake placed a gentle paw over hers.

“Look this really means a lot,” Yang said, all joking gone from her face. “Thanks.”

“So,” Yang murmured, a glint coming to her lavender eyes. “You come by the border often?”

Weiss shifted from paw to paw. “I…might.”

“Do you come around, say, at twilight? When most of the other drakes are napping for a night hunt?” Yang’s grin widened.

Weiss knew she should walk away, but she found herself saying: “I may. Depending on whether there’s anything interesting worth investigating.”

Yang nodded once, withdrawing. “See you then.” With that, she picked up the ice chunk in her talons and hurried off, water already dripping to the ground behind her.

Once the golden drake was gone, Weiss shook herself like an arctic fox shaking water from its pelt. What was that?! What did I just agree to?! Did I hit my head during that fight?!

She turned and started back toward home, her legs shaking. It would be easy enough to fix this, she supposed. All she had to do was not go anywhere near this spot at twilight. The fire drake would surely lose interest.

But she couldn’t shake the tingly feeling in her chest, or the sharp coldness that had come to her scales. She could still feel those sharp fangs and warm paws, both painful and blissful when they touched her ice-cold body. Her tail twisted and she dipped her head, letting out a low groan. Of course, she would be back by twilight the next day. Nothing would keep her away.

I just know I’m going to regret this… she thought mournfully, glancing over her shoulder at the scorched fields and volcanic rivers that she now knew as the home of the most beautiful, infuriating drake she would probably ever meet.
