belts weren’t used to keep pants up like they are in modern times until the 1920s. in fact most trousers didn’t even have belt loops until then. they would’ve been mostly decorative before that, folk were still using suspenders the vast majority of the time!

If you had to guess, which planet/moon do you think would most likely be Noman’s Land/Gunsmoke?

I’ve been thinking about this for a while (because my latest obsession is astronomy, although it’s also a long running one). In both animes and manga there are two suns, but I’ve been generally looking at exoplanets (planets outside our Solar System) within the habitable zone of their stars, thinking it would be complicated to find a two-star (binary) system that could have any kind of habitability. Yesterday though I found THIS OFFICIAL ART FROM NASA:

Turns out, NASA has a whole site that is… kind of an AU in which space travel is viable, and they explain how these planets would look like and what events would be cool to see in them and whatnot. They even have some 3D rendering from the surface of those planets so that you can see how it would look like! When I say this website is cool, I’m underselling it:

ANYWAY, back to Trigun shenanigans! When I saw the poster for Kepler-16b, I realized that yes, you could actually live on a planet of a binary system! These are called circumbinary planets, and a funny detail when you read the Wikipedia page:

A quick note on nomenclature: from what I’ve gathered, the name of the star system is followed by a letter or two. If it’s in caps, it’s a star, with A being the primary one and B the secondary; if it’s in lower case, it’s a planet. The planet counter always (?) starts at b, so if there are seven planets in the system called TRAPPIST-1 they would be TRAPPIST-1b, TRAPPIST-1c, TRAPPIST-1d…

Another important note is that there are two types of planetary configuration: If the planet only orbits one star, it’s called S-Type (or non-circumbinary planet); if it orbits both stars, it’s called P-Type (or circumbinary). Hope this didn’t get too confusing!

So I’ve made a list of binary systems that could potentially host human life. Which one do you think would be the best choice?

Kepler-16: the NASA poster one, its planet unofficially called “Tatooine” amongst scientists (good for them). 16b (the planet) is, however, a gas giant like Saturn, so it would be impossible to live there. If it has a moon with an atmosphere though, that could host life! And we’d get to see in the sky two stars and one bigass planet covering a good chunk of it. Pretty neat 🪐

Kepler-35: The planet discovered here is not within the habitable zone, but there is a high chance there might be other rocky planets in it. We can just make it up however we want it to be ✨

Kepler-38: Same as 35, but also the mass of the planet is unknown (I think? Wikipedia says one thing and NASA another, so idk)

Kepler-47: It has 3 planets, which is very cool 🪐🪐🪐 The second one, 47c, is within the habitable zone, but it would be the same case as 16b (living on a moon). The other two planets would also be perfectly visible, I think.

PH1/Kepler-64: First circumbinary planet found in a quadruple (FOUR STARTS ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️) system, and the discovery was made by citizens! How cool is that!? The planet orbits two of them, but the other system is fairly near and probably influences the planet?. They’re probably perfectly visible from the surface.

ROXs 42: Not much known about the planet, but it orbits the secondary star and has an atmosphere💫 That’s because it’s a gas giant, so it’s not habitable and we’d have to use a moon. Would be cool to see the stars wandering the sky on different paths though, since it’s the only S-Type system in this list!

Kepler-453: I’ve gotten confusing info about the habitability zone on this system, but we know that there’s a gas giant half the size of Jupiter 🤔

Kepler-1647: Same as Kepler-16 and 47. Apparently the system would be capable of sustaining an Earth-sized moon! 🌑

At the end of volumes of Black Clover is space for the “Blank Page Brigade.” This particular “brigade” is composed of the assistants (you know, those who help with art) and others from the Black Clover manga team, lead by “Captain Tabata.”

the one-shot in question may be Koi, Tokidoki Chounouryoku – is the assistant Taishin Uemura?

I did not find their name in vol.32, which was published in early April. Maybe Uemura will be in the blank page brigade for volume 33?

The line 'monsters must be people too so oh geez!’ from Yes To Err is Human (So Don’t Be One) by Will Wood is quite literally a redundant sentence. You see, calling things monsters sets humans apart from them, humanizing us, and demonizing them. Take for example, in lots of literature, you hear the line ‘you monster!’ making them the villain, othering them from society. 

Now, in the literal ‘monster’ sense, they are entirely different species from us, if we were to take zombies or vampires. If we take a look at the word ‘people’, what defines the word ‘people’? 

Now, according to the wikipedia article, it says it’s a “being that has certain capacities or attributes such as reason, morality, consciousness or self-consciousness, and being a part of a culturally established form of social relations such as kinship, ownership of property, or legal responsibility.” 

If we look at the line ‘capacities or attributes such as reason, morality, consciousness or self-consciousness’ it effectively is saying that to be a person you need to be sentient. Now, what does sentient mean? ‘able to perceive or feel things’ according to the oxford dictionary. So many organisms feel things, like bears, but zombies don't. 

They can’t feel pain, due to being a shell of a human, and lacking pain receptors. 

This evidence makes them non-sentient, therefore not making them a person, disproving Will Wood’s statement that monsters must be people. 

But, if we were to take vampires or werewolves, they do feel pain, due to still having a nervous system. 

So, in conclusion, undead creatures (lichs, skeletons, ghosts) are not monsters, but living creatures, including vampires, for some reason, (werewolves, bugbears, goblins) are considered a person. 

But! This still doesn’t make up for other creatures, like slimes. Slimes, according to many other sources, don’t feel pain. We can connect this to plants and bugs, who also don’t feel pain, giving the idea that slimes are in fact, not a person, right? They don’t fall under the undead category, so we’d need to consider them in the ‘other’ category. 

But, there are always conflicting sources when searching for answers. Some sites say that zombies can still have feelings due to having a smidge of feeling left in them, or ghosts being sad about their past lives, considering it a human, living feeling, even though they are considered dead. There are thousands of monster species out there that fall under so many different categories, and I hope to catalog them all.

So taking all of this information that I’ve discussed, is that monsters being people is subjective to the species. Of course, there are always outliers, like zombies that regain a sense of humanity, and they will be taken into consideration.

Yes, this was literally like eight years ago but I had split the video into several parts due to its length and the studio filed complaints against all of them and I got permanently banned but it was too late and the video got out.

I understand like the studio has the rights to it and I may not have been the first person to see it or post it. But I didnt know anyone who had seen it before. I definitely felt the studio was hoarding the content just because they could and were proud to have the first taped longform FOB interview, and never planned on selling or posting it.

I really like what MTV does where they have a lot of old interviews of very dubious levels of audio and video quality that I’ve never heard of or seen anywhere, and maybe this is a little crazy to say and maybe stuff was just different in 05 cause stuff is so airbrushed now, but I feel like some of them were deliberately engineered to be dark AF or look as fake as possible to act as a some kind of filter for what they can be used for or how widely they get shared. And theyre extremely difficult to access and find and download off the site but they’re still there if you’re really dedicated to researching something. I also think theyre remastering a lot of the old videos that aired on TV that have like dogshit quality now and posting them. I feel like that’s a really good way of balancing respecting the image artists want to project and the quality they want associated with their image, and also the interests of people who want these things for their cultural value or whatever

Another thing in the same vein that I think is really interesting is that radio shows like Loveline and Howard Stern are often bordering on lost media, I think because there are just insane numbers of episodes but also the content on the shows is so outrageous and cancel worthy now people dont want it out there. but also I think the studios are too lazy or theres not enough of a financial motivation to curate a backlog of their content, even one behind a paywall. Because this happens with like cleaner morning radio like Elvis Duran haha.

but there are a lot of truckers on reddit that are very dedicated to preserving the episodes of Howard Stern and Loveline and passing them around illegally, and that’s where Ive gotten a lot of longform interviews with Pete that have been incredibly beneficial to the dissertations lol. I actually paid for a SiriusXM subscription before I went to the Reddit trucker community but it didnt matter so I had to go to the Reddit Truckers for help lol

Side tangent fun fact about me: in elementary school, I was the dork who’d wear fake fangs at recess and did convince several classmates I was a vampire. As for my choice of 3 tabs I’d save, they’re not the most exciting from the top of my head in comparison. I know the one I immediately reopened before anything else was this Pacific Rim fanfiction: From Out the Ocean Risen by Bluestar , but it thankfully was in my ao3 bookmarks, unlike others, so not lost forever to the void. (God, it’s gorgeously written.)

At some point I’m gonna write a MUCH LONGER POST about finding accurate information on the internet, but these keep rattling around in my brain. some of these are things I learned in high school and college about proper sourcing, some are things I’ve picked up along the way!

BUT FINDING ACCURATE INFORMATION IS. HARD. ESPECIALLY NOW. SO HERE’S SOME STUFF TO HELP YOU OUT.

Don’t think in binaries of “FACT REAL” or “FACT FAKE.” Think more in terms of a spectrum or a percentage possibility. Sometimes, we just can’t undeniably confirm whether something is true or not. But we can estimate the likelihood that it is true. BUT FALSE INFORMATION MASQUERADING AS TRUE INFORMATION CAN STILL HAPPEN.

But someone actually trying to teach you will allow themselves up for review and critique. That’s the whole damn point of peer-review journals. People trying to present you with false information usually don’t want to show you their sources.

Libraries are your friend. Sometimes libraries will let you get a digital card, meaning you don’t have to physically walk into said library to check out books.

Know what your HTTP suffixes mean!! Here’s a full list, but in general, if you’re getting your information from a .com site, it means you are getting it from a COMPANY of some kind. Companies want money. .org and .net are almost always some of your safest bets.

Yes, you want to look for citations, bibliographies. This will raise the likelihood that the information is correct. HOWEVER yes, you might also want to do a cursory inspection of the sources. If someone is making a claim about endangered birds, but all their sources come from things like “FAKE BIRD SUMMARIES FOR PRANKSTERS” or “BirdInformationSuppliedByCompaniesTryingToPushFertilizerThatKillsBirds.com” then the citations mean nothing.

Scholarly articles and academic journals are your friends. These are required to say who all worked on a project, what all happened, who supplied funding, and any conflicts of interest, and if they have been peer-reviewed (meaning someone actually checked out if their data was sound, and if there were any undisclosed sources of funding or conflicts of interest).

Most large universities and research/academic institutes often have their own databases and websites that you can access these journals from. Most are free.

Anecdotal evidence, meaning personal accounts, experiences, observations, etc.are almost universally not great evidence. There are absolutely exceptions! But these are incredibly subjective and tricky to work with, both because of the nature of hearsay, and the subjective quality of human experiences and memory. If someone is ONLY giving you anecdotal evidence, this is a bad sign.

Skewing, slanting, bias, and propaganda can get so insidiously subtle that even people trained to spot it have trouble. It takes practice to spot it. It’s okay.

No, wikipedia is not really a great resource, but it is an excellent summarizer, and the real trick is you check the citations. No citations? Bad article.

And what exactly is Wold Newton?

Different sort of Gamera March post today, and a history lesson in digging through a bunch of websites I found probably 10-15 years ago that permanently influenced my take on kaiju films and how I write about them.

Readers of some of my own kaiju fandom stories (barely worth mentioning here considering the weight of what I’m about to talk about) may have noticed hints of a concept I’ve been recently building up to tackling, the origins of various Toho and Daiei kaiju and how they relate to two warring ancient civilizations, Toho’s Muans and Daiei’s Atlanteans. The story of how we got to this point begins in 1795 - yes, 1795. Really.

The Wold Newton family concept, per Wikipedia, is effectively a study of fictional universes, with the aim to figure out which of those universes might actually be the same universe after all. This exists largely outside of official crossovers, although those are often considered as evidence. The premise is basically “if it fits, it’s canon, and if it doesn’t fit, some version of it might still be canon.” AKA the absolute bane of a certain no-fun-allowed type of kaiju fan that I probably annoyed the hell out of in my younger days and remain damn proud of it. The concept dates back to a real meteorite that fell in the town of Wold Newton, Yorkshire in 1795, and Phillip José Farmer, a later American writer who proposed the hypothesis that many improbably strong or intelligent fictional heroes and villains are in fact descendants of two families irradiated by said meteorite. It’s since evolved to be more centered on the universe-connecting I’ve described above, but the idea of the two families seems to still be mentioned on occasion.

(Important note: Wold Newton historians thematically phrase their findings in a way that describes fictional events/characters as if they were part of a real history and dismiss contradictions between the included stories as ‘errors.’ This is not a slight against established canon or willful misinterpretation of official material, but a device meant to imply the official material is an erroneous or exaggerated retelling of the ‘true’ events as present in the Wold Newton Universe)

Which brings us to the first leg on the journey to how this is at all relevant to Gamera, the article Prehistoric Survivors in the Pacific by Mark Brown. This an oft-cited article by later kaiju writers, seeming to be the first ever suggestion that the people of Mu are responsible for the prehistoric creatures encountered by modern explorers in various fictional island adventure stories. I’ll note here that this article actually has nothing to do with Toho’s Muans, or the film Atragon, or any other kaiju films for that matter. It instead concerns other fictional depictions of the real-world hypothesis of the continent of Mu/Lemuria (proposed to explain similar lemur fossils appearing on continents separated by water and since discredited with the discovery of plate tectonics).

Among those writers that expanded on Mark Brown’s concept and adapted it to kaiju films, I specifically bring up Den Valdron and Chris N., who have done much of the most creative and scientific writing on Godzilla, Gamera, and their ilk that I have ever encountered - everything from hypothesizing what Gorath really is in true astronomical terms to a personal favorite wild theory that connects every giant spider that’s appeared in every film ever.

They also most certainly do not endorse my personal attempts to create a timeline not only involving Showa Toho and Showa Daiei, but one that includes the rest of the Godzilla and Gamera films including all five Godzilla Millennium series timelines (GMK and Final Wars need to be heavily modified), GODZILLA(1998) and its animated series, and perhaps most significantly, the Rebirth of Mothra trilogy, whose elements give some insight to events of Earth’s distant past before the Muans and Atlanteans.

But my most obvious Wold-Newtonian element may actually be the recent inclusion of a version of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in this universe - because the operative question isn’t “Why would they be there?” it’s “Why wouldn’t they be there?” There are actually quite a few stories and characters where I’ve hinted at there being at least some version of them in this universe (with the caveat that they don’t include any obvious complicating elements like superheroes or aliens or the world ending, etc.). However, and I feel this is important, when writing a story I’m careful to make sure the non-kaiju-related references have no more relevance than background details, unless the story I’m writing is tagged specifically as a crossover.

I’m not going to go over every single aspect of this timeline attempt, because that would be way too long and some of them are spoilers, but since this is Gamera March, I’ll end with my version of just the Gamera elements of this timeline (save for the aliens, which I’ll get to later, and Irys, whose origins I haven’t completely settled on yet. Also note that I include characters and elements from The Last Hope in my world-building but not the exact details of the legend). I use this timeline in the stories that are set in my main kaiju universe (only two definitively so far), but you can bet I’m probably still thinking about at least some of its elements, even in one-off stories and AUs that don’t directly follow these events.

12,000 years ago: In response to the Muans developing creatures that absorb atomic power (or similar energy) to grow larger and stronger, the Atlanteans switch from their arsenal of such weapons to one that includes a genetics program. 3,000-1,500 years ago: It is unknown how many incarnations Gamera took on over the next many thousands of years, but by Magatama being discovered in association with Japanese cultures from these periods of its history, we can infer he had at least one, possibly many encounters with humanity in this stretch of time.
