In the elf language, it means “Those whose travel was stolen from them.”

It was more than two hundred years ago, when the second brightest city of the High Elves, Altanime, met its doom. The city suffered an attack from within its very walls, when the ambassador of the human kingdom Solus, who secretly worked for Count Ramnus, opened a gate to Nethermor within the city’s walls, allowing the horde of warriors and onslaught of black magic to pour into the unsuspecting city. It was a horrible battle that ended within just a few hours, so crushing and complete was the elves’ defeat. It was named “The Silent Assault”, for one of the first magics to be inflicted onto the city was a curse of silence, to prevent the elf mages from casting their spells, or use their passwords to access the city’s secret shelters. And yet, after the battle was over and the surviving populace was captured, the warlocks of Nethermor enhanced the curse, making it many times more vile.

It twisted the very core and nature of those silent elves, not only making itself permanent, but stripping them of many aspects they had. Their longevity, their voice, their natural grace and their ability to reproduce. At that very first stage, those elves were named Mornun “The Banestricken”. They were used as slaves or entertainment, within the city they once owned.

For three long years they lived like this, facing hardships that culled their numbers by the day. One day though, under blurred circumstances, about half of them managed to escape their prisons and the city that had become their nightmare. They fled fast, and even if at that stage they couldn’t communicate with each other because of their lack of voice, something in their eyes conveyed their destination: The Fayfountain. A mystical lake hidden deep within the forest, whose magical properties the elves hadn’t fully unravelled even after centuries of studies.

Upon reaching the lake, they knelt beside it and shed tears of sorrow and pain. It was the first time they felt that they had escaped, and yet, the first time they so deeply and painfully felt that they had been uprooted from everything they had been and had owned. They washed the fatigue and tears from their faces, and when they did, the lake, moved by the Mornuns’ sorrow, glowed and released magic ancient as time, altering their curse.

They felt the virility returning to their hurt bodies, the warmth of life and power surging inside them. Their eyes glowed with mystical light, and they could feel their connection with the arcane and nature once more. But their beautiful voices never returned, they were forever taken to the Abyss. Instead, they found they could speak in one’s mind through a unique form of telepathy. Never again would their fiery, inspiring speeches move audience however. Never again would their beautiful songs make people shed tears. And they would never be able to go through mystical gates and journeys, since they could not speak out the secret words to unseal the path. Thus, the name “Velorenti, those whose travel had been stolen from them”. They scattered, their hearts bitter, heavy and sorrowful, unable to stay with each other and be reminded of their reduced state and former, unreachable glory. The shock of their very nature and identity changing was too much for some to bear, even after their partial redemption at the Fayfountain. The world only now comes to know of them, and what happened in their city, and most treat them with caution. Some, even some fellow elves, treated them as if they were agents of the Nethermor and ostracized them, so now the Velorenti try to make a place of their own in a changed world, for when one changes, their world changes too.
