CUE "BLEED FOR ME" RIGHT ABOUT NOW -- I REALLY HOPE THAT WASN'T REAL HUMAN BLOOD.
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on a "Drunk with Power"-themed gig/show flyer for American hardcore punk band DEAD KENNEDYS, plus shots from said gig, performing live at the On Broadway, San Francisco, CA, on June 27, 1982. 📸: Greg Gaar.
NOTE: Check out the CRASS "Anti-war/Nagasaki Nightmare" patch on the kid's jacket up front. Nice one! Classic stuff!

Every Record I Own - Day 822: Nomeansno Why Do They Call Me Mr. Happy?
With the departure of guitarist Andy Kerr after the touring cycle of 0 + 2 = 1, Nomeansno found themselves returning to the original two-piece line-up of brothers Rob and John Wright. In 1993, they recorded and released Why Do They Call Me Mr. Happy?, their first album as a duo in over a decade. But Mr. Happy sounds less like their original two-piece configuration from the early '80s and more like their occasional guitar-less tracks from the Kerr years (see: "0 + 2 = 1", "Big Dick," "Metronome," etc.). Despite the scaled down personnel, Nomeansno seemed as strong as ever. The album was a hit with fans and critics alike.
I remember when this album came out. I liked Nomeansno but wasn't sure if I needed another album of theirs in my collection. I was beginning my deep dive into the DIY hardcore scene of the early '90s at the time, and Nomeansno didn't quite fit in with the new crop of young'uns. I wouldn't hear Mr. Happy until my buddy and bandmate Andrew rekindled my interest in Nomeansno sometime around 2000. He was somewhat shocked that I had never heard "The River" off of Mr. Happy. This was, in his opinion, one of the crowning achievements of the band. And he was right. Twenty-something years later, "The River" still gives me chills. If you've come to see Russian Circles at any point since COVID, you've probably heard it at some point in the night over the PA as it's part of our between-bands playlist.
Mr. Happy, unfortunately, was not one of the stolen LPs bequeathed to me by my college radio colleague. Instead, I scooped up this used copy somewhere in Europe years ago. It's long been out of print and absent on streaming services, and even the vinyl version is a bit disappointing as it lacks three of the songs from the CD version. Here's hoping it's part of the Alternative Tentacles reissue campaign and that the repress includes the full track list.

The fact that I own a NoMeansNo shirt makes me feel powerful. So powerful, in fact, that I ate the earbuds that I use to listen to their music. Thanks to Alternative Tentacles for making these - and for making them in an extra small!
