Now I almost always begin a meditation session with the tick tock, which once I get going, becomes almost an automatic mind/body backbeat. Recently I have been working with it some more. Go North East is additionally hosting a publicity event at the Metrocentre's Exhibition Square tomorrow (Saturday 18th April 2015), where members of the public will be able to join in all of the fun. Intu Metrocentre's 'Metrognomes' were having some fun this morning, while checking out the brand new buses which are due to enter service soon. The use of red, green, blue and yellow vinyls is prevalent, which ties in with the different coloured "quadrants" of the shopping centre. The branding focuses on the three main elements of intu Metrocentre: shopping, leisure, and eating/drinking. They were branded soon after, and are destined for allocation to Riverside Depot for use on service X66. The first batch of four, which carry a dark blue base livery, were delivered to the company last month. The vehicle features full white LED destination displays on the front, side and rear, and the interior specification for this batch of vehicles has been completely overhauled: they feature Esteban Civic V2 and V3 seating complete with e-leather, two-colour Tarabus 'Wood Effect' flooring, and blue accent lighting which is fitted underneath seats to provide extra light on the gangway. The Micro Hybrid recovers energy lost from braking to power the vehicle electrics and compressed air systems, saving up to 10% in fuel costs. These Wright Streetlite vehicles are the 11.5m Micro-Hybrid variant.

Dream SMP Big Band AU.

This is inspired by this AU https://archiveofourown.org/series/2001253 which is about a music conservatory. However, it is classical music and I play the saxophone in a big band. So I'm doing that.

Also, big band vibes are wild, I'm pretty sure my section leader is the reincarnation of Athena, completly unironically. 

Saxophone Section

Alto 1 Wilbur Soot. He is the leader of the saxophone section and is really good at it. Came from the clarinet and the guitar but to get into the band he needed to play a jazz instrument and decided that clarinets and saxes where just shiny recorders and went from there.

Alto 2: Tommy, wanted to play Tenor but didn't. Isn't good with improv but BOY DOES HE GO FOR IT. Sits next two tenor 2 and will not shut up. His music is covered in doodles and it makes Wilbur mad. He folds it up and he does not care.

Tenor 1: Techno. Absolute beast with the Tenor, can solo like a pro, has perfect pitch. Can do the wierd growly thing. Techno is the sort of person that can pick up any instrument and play it byt ohhhhhhh boyy. Tenor Sax. Would also be the leader if he wasn't bad at social interactions.

Tenor 2: Tubbo. Is trying very hard but he's not there just yet, he is still really good but isn't good at reading the music when Phil likes to switch it up and just play whatever and he has complicated hand signs and its chaotic.

Bari Sax: Niki. Plays the bari sax. Is hella strong. She has all the music in the right order and always has a pencil. Does killer solos when she is forced to and makes heavy eye contact with the brass section. Talks a lot with Fundy because she sits in front of the piano.

MORE UNDER THE CUT

Rhythm Section

Piano: Fundy, has a lot of music and not enough stands. He has a little fox keyring on his music bag and gets called a Furry. He takes his music home to practice and gets really bored of just playing chords in the background.

Drums: Eret, his favourite instrument is the cowbell. Used to play the clarinet in the wind band with Wilbur, Tommy and Tubbo but when he got the chance to move up to the Big Band he chose the drums. Absolute hates it when he just has to tap out a 4/4 rhythm.

Bass: BadBoyHalo, has to sit behind Tommy and he does not like it. He is a classically trained double bass player but just wanted to play fun music. Is fairly calm but unironically has a switchblade in his case for no reason and now he is a local band cryptid.

Guitar: Skeppy, he is far too energetic for the rhythm section but heh is amazing. Always complains about how heavy the amp is and messes up the extender cable box which means that Fundy gets upset.

Trumpet Section

Trumpet One: Dream, Is amazing. Absolutely amazing on the trumpet. Can do all the listening and solos perfectly, has a ‘rivalry’ with Techno. All his music is in the right order and he is sooo good. Does brass band and marching on the side but really enjoys the big band because of his friends. Can transpose music written in perfect keys.

Trumpet 2: Georgenotfound. Is just vibing, he is only second because he never shows up to practice but he doesn’t need to. Kept falling asleep on the band trip and keeps forgetting where his pencil is.

Trumpet 3: Callahan. Used to play the cornet but had to move up because they needed trumpets. Is very chill about playing third because he understands that it all works together to make the sound sound nice

Trumpet 4: Awesam. He dissapeared for a while and would have been in the same position as George but he decided to be fourth so he doesn't have to worry about being in charge of anything at all. Bad idea, he is now in charge of stacking chairs.

Trombone. (For some reason all the trombone players I know are meme lords.)

Trombone 1. Quackity. Glisses unironically. He knows the trombone memes and he will play them as a warm up. He's the type of guy that would wrap his trombone with tinsel at Christmas.

Trombone 2. Purpled. This man glisses 'ironically'. Tries to avoid the sax vs trumpet drama but still. Always tries to reach the low notes but his arms aren't long enough. Just wants to play the trombone.

Trombone 3. Karl. Really wants to be second but can't move up there until either purpled or quackity quits which is not going to happen. Has sided with both the trumpets and the saxes and is loyal to no insturment wars as he has played both in the past.

Bass Trombone: Captain Puffy. Makes eye contact with Niki to stay in time. Too small for her instrument but her personality makes up for it. I imagine she always has Slide lube, and she will knock music off with her slide.

Others that don't fit in.

Philza minecraft. Band leader. He plays sax and fell in love with jazz and now just wants to help the next generation. He's the person you name drop on your personal statement. Has complicated notes and plans for the band and you have to be clued into his hand signs because halfway through a piece he will go off ink and paper and you just have to know.

For example.

Niki: At part C again.

New member: I thought he said the repeat was to part b

Tubbo: that's what he said. But then he patted his head which means go back to the rhythm. And so Techno's gonna solo over this and then we play backing when the trumpet solo happen. Play part h, go back to D and then we play it through and repeat to B

Somewhere you'd love to travel to: The Czech Republic! I’m 1/4 or 1/8 (can’t exactly remember) Czech from my dad’s side. My grandma I never got to meet was either full or 1/2 Czech, so I think it’d be neat to visit where part of my heritage is from. I would also love to visit Poland, France, and Germany 🤙

Random fact about yourself: I can/have played the Bb Clarinet, Bb Bass Clarinet, and Eb Contra Alto Clarinet. The Bb was my main clarinet that I owned and I played it for eight years throughout my school band(s) career. I stayed on 1st and 2nd chair parts throughout my playing history. The Contra Alto was especially fun though because it’s such a deep sound and you had to translate from bass clef to treble clef if you didn’t have an actual part for the Contra Alto ( if you didn’t you had to steal Tuba music haha) It also made your head vibrate when you played it! I still have my plastic and wooden Bb clarinets, and I will cherish them forever ❤️

I’m here for the music

This is my last semester at the University of Akron and this is the first unclass I’ve taken. I’m a history major and I’m also doing a certificate program in Museums and Archives. I’m a student assistant at the Cummings Center for the History of Psychology on campus so come visit me if you haven’t been before. Before I decided to study history, I was a music major for a year. Music was all I’d ever known, but I needed to do something else. I started piano lessons when I was 3 years old. My dad is a musician, and all my siblings took lessons too. I grew up taking private lessons and having recitals, not playing t-ball or going to ballet. I started playing the clarinet when I was in 4th grade and picked up the saxophone a year later. I loved playing and I wasn’t terrible at it. I went to a junior high that specialized in the arts, and I played in the concert bands and jazz bands. At this point, I started playing in local big band ensembles that my dad had played with for years. I grew up going to see him play, and now I was playing with him. I fell in love with jazz music after that. I got an ipod for Christmas, and I would load it up with stacks of CDs from the library. I listened to as much as I could, starting early and making my way through decades of music that was constantly evolving and expanding.

 I was in an arts program in high school too, and that’s when music effectively took over my life. I was in the marching band, which rehearsed all summer break and for hours after school. It wasn’t just football games on Friday nights either, we competed regionally and traveled all over the state and beyond on the weekends. Then there was symphonic band, and concert band, and jazz band, and chamber ensembles. I was playing alto and tenor saxophone, and clarinet in those various ensembles. Apparently I still wasn’t getting enough music, because I then decided to join indoor drumline. I marched bass drum one year and cymbals for another. That was just at school, I played in various local ensembles from Cleveland to Canal Fulton on the weekends too. 

I lived and breathed music and I loved it. When senior year rolled around, it was the most obvious choice for my future. By that point I was already taking lessons with a UA professor. So I auditioned here and the plan was to double major in classical clarinet performance, and jazz studies on tenor. I started classes and music changed from just something I love, to something to make my living off of, and I knew that wasn’t the right career for me. Aside from music, my other obsession growing up was history. It was my favorite and best subject, and I was your stereotypical four-eyed bookworm for pretty much any historical topic. I decided to change my major to history after my freshman year, and then I accidentally quit music entirely. I didn’t mean to, and it didn’t happen overnight. I was trying to balance school and work, and I dropped out of some ensembles, and things were busy. Suddenly I looked up and I hadn’t touched a single instrument in months. I went from playing every day for years, to not playing at all. Three years later, and now I pretty much only play around the holidays... (Christmas gigs are great for easy money). I miss music a lot, so when I heard about this class it sounded perfect. As we’ve already learned, music and dance are so entwined with each other, and I wanted to learn more about both. I’ve never been much of a dancer, but I’m eager to try and learn a lot this semester. Returning to Guzzetta Hall and ending my time at UA with a class combining my two favorite things, history and music, feels really right.

The Beginning

Hello everyone and welcome to my latest creation. My name is Taylor. I am a 27-year-old from Michigan. I am currently a student studying environmental studies. I will be graduating in spring 2020 and will be the first in my family to earn a college degree! Anyways, the Original VS Sampled blog will be my 5th blog (omg). Is this too many blogs? I got interested in music before I even knew I was into music. My mom is crazy about music. She is around 60 years old, but every era of music, she had picked her favorites (a good and funny example of this would be her loving Future, especially when the song Mask Off was released). When I was younger, she would blast music from our living room’s surround system, even on school nights. There are albums she’d play over and over. I would never have put the CD in myself and listen to the artist myself, but when a song played on the radio, I knew all the words to the songs because of her lol! My dad also listened to some real oldies, that I’d grow accustomed to hearing. We’d have shopping trips to Circuit City every time a favorite artist’s CD came out. Once I began listening to my own tunes, I was able to get anybody’s CD I wanted. This was around the age of 10. I liked R&B and loved gangsta rap. My mom is actually the reason my love for Bone Thugs started. I was raiding my bro’s CD and Tape collection and listening to his music at this point too. There was a lot of Eminem, Devin the Dude, Outkast, 50 Cent, and even Mike Jones – before he blew up.

At 11, I joined my junior high’s band, played Alto Sax for a year then switched to Clarinet the next and stuck with that until I graduated High School. Also at 11, My dad had brought me a guitar for Christmas after noticing my interest in playing instruments. Here I started listening to rock. At this point I had 2003 rock and what came before. I learned the early 2000s songs and 90s. Around this time, music downloads on LimeWire had taken off, and I could get anything I wanted. Ahh… the early 2000s, I loved all the music during this time, hence the imiss2005 blog that I terribly neglected, I’m ashamed, lol. Maybe I’ll start to build it, who knows.

 Onto other things, it wasn’t until a couple years ago 2015 maybe? I began to hear a lot of songs, sampling old songs. Rap producers/ DJs did this a lot in the past, this is basically how hip hop originated. DJs would take old school records, especially funk, use the drums or entire beats and speed them up or slow them down to let rappers rap over the beat. Song sampling has become very noticeable within the last 10 years for me. During this time, I was (and still am) really heavy into playlist creation on iTunes (one of the very few things I like about Apple), and I had a brilliant idea! I need to comb through my entire music library and find out who has sampled who. I started with my favorite artists. I hear songs on the radio that are old songs that have been sampled and new songs on the radio that I recognize the samples. Samples are reused portions of original songs, or even movie audio, etc.,. A producer will take pieces, rhythms, melodies, drums, vocals, isolated sounds from original songs, and sometimes manipulate these portions to make their own creations. It’s awesome!

When I listen to music now, I always wonder, did they sample that? Then I run to the wonderful site Whosampled.com to see what they come up with. This has been my primary resource for discovering the original music of my favorite songs.

One of the first songs I realized that was sampled is Aretha Franklin’s “Call Me” that was is a featured single on her 1970s album This Girl’s in Love With You.

Franklin’s “Call me” piano melody was sampled by Slum Village in their song “Selfish,” coming from their 2004 album Detroit Deli (A Taste of Detroit). (Good old 2004, the early 2000s. Come back to me). “Selfish” features an awesome hook sang by John Legend and a phenomenal verse and production by Kanye West.

Both artists have significance to me since they both hail from and or got their start in my home town, the Dirty D. Detroit. We all should (and better) be familiar with the wonderful Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. She has influenced and contributed so much to the awesome R&B music we have today. Rest in Peace, Queen Aretha. As for Slum Village, I don’t think they are as popular as they should be, especially with this smooth song they have given us.

So, this is how it will be. I will try to do one of these posts everyday. I will post an original song, along with a few facts about it and the artists, followed by the song that has sampled the original song. I hope everyone enjoys this blog and also discovers some new music.

Random fact: a few years ago I sang in a choir in a music tour through some parts of western Europe - we spent a few days in London, Paris, Switzerland, Austria, and Germany with shorter stops in Liechtenstein and Venice, and it was a ton of fun performing and getting to know people and seeing tons of cool places in my first trip out of the US!
