Part 7: Orthodox Religions

Many religions are ethnoreligions: the religion of the Ancient Greeks (Hellenes) is called the Ancient Greek (or Hellenic) religion, simply named after that culture. The same goes for Ancient Egyptian, Roman. From Hinduism to Yoruba religion, most religions to ever have existed are simply the belief systems of that cultural area.

But some religions behave more like social movements -- they view society as having problems (sin) and promise salvation, which means they usually envision a great good-versus-evil cosmic war. Some of those movements (like Buddhism and Jainism) nonetheless are fairly focused on individual enlightenment and thus often not as critical of society or as ambitious to attack existing institutions of power (or to become them).

Orthodox religions on the other hand really can't stand wrong-think (heresy) or material expressions of cultural beliefs (idolatry) and critique these as sinful tendencies that get people off track or that marry people to the existing "fallen-ness" of society.

1: Origins! How did you come up with the concept for your OC?

So, Sirius' origin story is actually rather interesting, at least to me. I had been playing World of Warcraft for quite some time, but I was slowly losing my enjoyment for the game, so the people I was interacting with at the time were telling me about Final Fantasy 14 and I figured, "Oh what the hell." So I gave it a go. I absolutely fell in love with the game. Between the story, the community, it was like a night and day difference between WoW and FFXIV. Jump a few months later, and my old altaholism was beginning to kick in. I had my first character Xephanos ( @the-exiled-veteran ) completely caught up with story, but had yet to delve into the RP community, but even then, I knew I wanted another character, so I made Sirius. My initial plan was to make Sirius my magic using character and level all the magic jobs on him, and level all the physical jobs on Xeph...at least until I learned the amaro was a thing.... Anyways, time jump to January 2021. WoW had finally lost all appeal to me, but I still wanted to RP. It was actually you @hollowedscythedancer , you came to me with the idea for starting up an FC ( @the-poisoned-rose ) and I was all for it, but as much as I loved Xeph, if I was going to get into the RP scene, I wanted to give it a go on Sirius since he was more of a blank slate for me to play with. During my time on Xeph, I had leveled Red Mage to 80 and I fell in love with the class, so thats how I decided on Sirius' IC class. As for his personality and character traits? Many many long and late night conversations with you helped me focus what type of personality I wanted him to have. Given that Sirius was going to be a bit more "evil" than some of my other characters I had roleplayed in the past, I struggled with him for a short while, but after some more conversations, as well as pulling some mild inspiration from Lucifer Morningstar from Lucifer and Rumpelstiltskin from Once Upon a Time, Sirius Tia came to be, and I truely could not be happier with how he came out. The interactions I've had on him, the stories I've had the pleasure of writing for him, and even the ones where he's only been mildly involved, they have quickly become some of my favorites, and he's become a character that I absolutely love to play, and I'm excited to see where he's going to go from here!

L’abilismo silenziosamente radicato

E mentre con le gambe sollevate su una sedia, il PC con una puntata di Lucifer che scorre veloce e di cui riesco a seguire a malapena un 60%; mangio lentamente il gelato alla nocciola portatomi ieri da mio fratello ripensando a stamattina e rivivendo nella mia mente l’ennesimo episodio di abilismo che mi ha vista coinvolta.

Per chi non lo sapesse l’abilismo è la discriminazione nei confronti delle persone che hanno una disabilità. Non è sempre intenzionale o apertamente ostile, spesso ci sono dietro addirittura delle buone intenzioni, ma non significa che sia meno da combattere: in questi casi è una sorta di "razzismo" benevolo.

Non per essere la solita lagnosa che combatte contro i pregiudizi, come una tigre da poco incarcerata che sbatte ovunque con la convinzione di riuscire a scappar via dai suoi aguzzini; eppure vi assicuro che ne ho piene le scatole di ingoiare certi atteggiamenti e, molto probabilmente la quarantena ha amplificato a dismisura la mia intolleranza verso certe ingiustizie.

A farla breve stamattina avevo appuntamento, fissato tramite prenotazione online, alle 10 presso gli uffici comunali della mia città, per il rinnovo della carta di identità. Purtroppo non è mai semplice raggiungere certi uffici, perché il più delle volte sono ubicati in vecchie palazzine storiche ricche di barriere architettoniche. Eh già, il Decreto del Presidente della Repubblica 503/1996 è il più delle volte solo una salvietta per lavarsi la coscienza, ma non è il caso questo di dilagare troppo.

Tornando ai fatti, questa mattina conoscendo bene i miei polli, nonostante avessi appuntamento appunto alle 10 e trovandosi gli uffici comunali a malapena a 6 minuti di macchina da casa; alle 9:25 ci siamo messi in tre in auto alla volta di questa avventura. Dopo aver incrociato un non bene identificato numero (vi assicuro molto elevato per in miei gusti) di volti privi di protezioni, sapendo che l’unica entrata accessibile fosse quella sul retro - manco se noi disabili fossimo dei ratti di appartamento da far sgattaiolare di nascosto -, ci siamo subito diretti verso quella entrata, scoprendo in loco essere stata chiusa “causa COVID-19”.

Ora, io capisco che magari per evitare il sovraffollamento si cerca di contingentare le entrate riducendo la ridistribuzione delle stesse; ma almeno installare un citofono, capannello, affiggere un cartello con un numero a cui telefonare in caso di necessità, non credo fosse così difficile considerando che dall’entrata principale vi è una scalinata degna del Teatro Ariston di Sanremo e noi disabili, nonostante spesso veniamo accomunati a figure angeliche, non ci siamo ancora attrezzati purtroppo con le ali.

Vi giuro che prima o poi lo faremo, fino ad allora però voi bipedi cercate almeno di fare la polvere un po’ più spesso a quell’organo che molto volentieri dimenticate di avere, così giusto per non atrofizzarlo troppo, che di atrofici siamo già tanti al mondo.

Frecciatina ironica a parte, tornando alla narrazione, mentre padre sostava in terza fila fra borbottii vari, abbiamo spedito madre all’avan scoperta del perché fosse tutto chiuso, trovandocela 10 minuti dopo accanto ad un vigilante dietro il cancello, che magicamente si stava aprendo, con l’espressione stranita scoperta dopo essere stata causata da un’uscita infelice di un addetto che, sbuffando aveva ammesso che gli stavamo dando fastidio.

Ahhh che fortunato è stato l’addetto a non aver incrociato la sottoscritta, non sarei stata molto diplomatica.

Dopo aver finalmente parcheggiato nell’unico posto per disabili lasciato libero nel parcheggio custodito, essere finalmente scesa dalla macchina, sfoggiando la mia bella mascherina chirurgica a quadretti (eh perché io le cose più diffuse non le voglio 😌), sono entrata affiancata da mia madre, dirigendomi direttamente verso gli uffici preposti quando, ho udito un vecchietto che urlava un “seee e a cher non la facet passè?!?” (traduzione risistemata: “a lei la lasciate passare?”). Ho preferito ignorare, perché non sarei stata molto educata e fortuna ha voluto che ho incontrato subito una mia conoscente che mi ha fatta passare chiudendo la porta per evitare che altri entrassero.

Arrivata finalmente a destinazione, con le ruote che giravan già un bel po’ male 🙄, dopo che la mia conoscente ci aveva raccomandate all’addetto per carte di identità, ho consegnato al suddetto le carte (prenotazione, pagamento del MAV, foto tessera e vecchia carta di identità) e che con una flemma esasperante, le analizzate minuziosamente prima di aprire la pratica. La mia pazienza oramai era ai minimi termini e, nel momento in cui l’impiegato ha subito rivolto la parola a mia madre anziché a me, credo di essermi fatta una violenza immane nel risparmiargli una partaccia e limitarmi a rispondere prontamente.

Siccome però certa gente è molto dura di comprendonio e nonostante le evidenze, continua a reiterare errando, ha insistito nel rivolgere le domande a mia madre ed io di conseguenza a controbattere seccamente. Insomma il solito giochetto conosciuto dello strabico che in realtà non lo è, perché sinceramente non ho altre idee sul come definire un simile atteggiamento abilista.

Il “bello” - si fa per dire - però è avvenuto quando, chiedendo se fossi favorevole alla donazione degli organi e ricevendo un “sì” convinto da me, ha incalzato con un “è sicura?” sempre guardando mia madre. A quel punto non ci ho visto più e, probabilmente alzando un po’ la voce, ho sbottato dicendo “lei no, ma io sì, e siccome il corpo è mio, metta che sono favorevole”. Dopo quella mia uscita penso di averlo spaventato, perché da quel momento in poi non ha più guardato mia madre, ma neppure me; ma come si dice, mal comune mezzo gaudio, almeno non ha fatto altre gaffe.

Io non voglio essere prevenuta, ho un atteggiamento ancora molto fiducioso nell’essere umano, non faccio mai di tutta l'erba un fascio; però sono proprio gli episodi come questi che mi lasciano in bocca quel retrogusto amaro della frustrazione. Purtroppo agli occhi di molti chi è seduto su una carrozzina automaticamente è incapace di intendere e di volere e, nonostante le numerose campagne di sensibilizzazione, il tema trattato su vari fronti e canali, purtroppo l’ignoranza è dilagante.

Io più che far notare a chi sbaglia l’errore commesso, più che denunciare e parlare sempre e comunque divulgando senza filtri certi episodi inaccettabili, non posso fare altro e sperare nelle generazioni future.

Io ci credo ancora nell’intelligenza altrui e nel giusto discernimento, voglio crederci perché altrimenti questo amaro in bocca si trasformerebbe inevitabilmente in una perenne nausea, ed io non voglio vivere male per il resto dei miei giorni.

Munch/Fin, wherein the two actually meet years ago, one night at The Waterfront. Yes, there will be a part 2 to this. Eventually.

Secret to Keep - an Amaro/Rollins triple drabble, another little AU which, if you choose to believe, could actually be canon...?

Listen - my first Exorcist fic, a Marcus/Peter double drabble.  (And who would’ve thought this shortest thing I wrote would end up causing the most wank? Oh well, I still like it and I’m glad my recipient did as well.)

Who Needs Roses and Candy Hearts, Anyway? - A little Maze & Trixie friendship fic. For some reason Lucifer inspires me to write about all the little horrors and things I’ve hated in life...like being a young girl on Valentine’s Day who doesn’t get any gifts. 

So there they all are. That was fun. And exhausting. And yes, I’m taking a bit of a break from exchanges now to recuperate and work on some other things!
