Local legends conflict on the origins of the amaryllis. 🌹
Whether they sprang from the spilt blood of a scorned lover or were born of an ancient Senobian ritual gone awry, the truth behind these flowers is knowledge long forgotten... or held by a privileged few.

June Garden Floral Surprises In Central Florida
I live in Central Florida, growing zone 9B which is semi-tropical. Amaryllis is a subtropical bulb that belongs to the Amaryllidaceae family and is native to South Africa. It is grown as a potted plant in most parts of the United States but can also be grown outdoors year round in warm areas like Florida. Amaryllis sold at Christmas are FORCED bulbs.

Plant of the Day
Friday 26 January 2024
I was fortunate to be given a Hippeastrum 'Exotic Striped' (amaryllis) bulb just over six weeks ago. This tender bulb needs to be planted in a pot indoors and after flowering the leaves will develop. The plant can then be placed outside or in the greenhouse during the summer months, but shaded them from scorching sunshine and water regularly. My friend has had the same Hippeastrum plant for nearly 40 years.
