I just thought of this: the Molly doll was relaunched and the 10 Minute Mysteries Podcast series focused on a Molly mystery happened at the same time. So I’m wondering if the next book will be tied to another doll relaunch. According to AG’s own description, each season will be a separate book, so it could theoretically relaunch Kirsten and pair her with her single mystery book. I’m curious if AG will actually do this though, since Kirsten’s mystery is somewhat darker than a book like A Light in the Cellar.

The Manga Review, 5/20/22
This year’s Eisner nominations have just been announced. In the Best U.S. Edition of International Material—Asia category, VIZ Media garnered five of the six nominations with crowd-pleasers such as Chainsaw Man and Spy x Family, while Seven Seas garnered one for Robo Sapiens: Tales of Tomorrow. The only other manga nominated for an Eisner was Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead, which is competing in the Best Humor Publication category. Also nominated for an Eisner is Eike Exner’s Comics and the Origins of Manga: A Revisionist History, a scholarly work published by Rutgers University Press.
MANGA NEWS
Big news from Seven Seas, which just launched two new imprints: Seven Seas BL, which will publish works in the BL/Boys’ Love genre, and Seven Seas GL, which will publish works in the GL/Girls’ Love (yuri) genre. [Seven Seas]
The final chapter in Wataru Hinekure’s My Love Mix-Up! will run in the June issue of Bessatsu Margaret. [Anime News Network]
Brigid Alverson previews three new shonen titles that debut in July. [ICv2]
Over at Book Riot, Carina Pereira highlights eight of the summer’s most anticipated graphic novels. [Book Riot]
How do librarians respond book challenges in their communities? Shawn, Megan, and Tayla offer a variety of helpful strategies for handling complaints about graphic novels, from setting clear policies about who can bring a formal complaint to using peer-reviewed sites to demonstrate that your collection is, in fact, age-appropriate. [No Flying, No Tights]

Tony explores the complex friendship between Kaguya Shinomiya and Ai Hayasaka in Kaguya-sama: Love Is War. [Drop-In to Manga]

Did you know that Tokyopop’s Warriors fandom is still going strong after fifteen years? Patrick Kuklinksi shines a light on the fan-made comics that explore “parts of the books that weren’t detailed in canon,” re-write controversial storylines, and introduce original characters. [SOLRAD]
Megan D. jumps in the WABAC machine for a look at Rumiko Takashi’s Rumic Theater, a collection of short stories that VIZ published more than twenty-five years ago. “What caught my notice about this anthology is that they all feature something you don’t see a lot of in American manga releases: adult women,” she observes. “Every lead character is either a currently married woman (be they with or without children) or one who was married in the past.  A lot of their stories are small-scale, focused on their homes and their immediate community of friends and family. True to Takahashi fashion, though, they are also often comical”.” [The Manga Test Drive]

The Ten Best Indie Podcasts Of The Year
Tumblr media
In the last month, the large podcast networks have their P.R. and Marketing people working on all kinds of Best Of... lists that contain their podcasts. Spotify has already put out several lists.
So Amazon, Apple, Cumulus, iHeart, New York Times, NPR, Podcast One, SiriusXM, Spotify, and others don't need my help to publicize their podcasts at the end of this calendar year.
I am probably correct in assuming that they don't want me anywhere near their podcasts.
So, my list this year consists of all independent podcasts. My reasoning is based on several trends and past events.
First, independent podcasts started podcasting. Podcasting began as a basement endeavor, not financed by Warren Buffett or despicable private equity types.
Second, despite their lack of money and resources, independent podcasts are often better quality. These indie podcasts don't pander to their audience like, say, Cumulus or SiriusXM podcasts often do.
Also, indie podcasts don't infect us with self-absorbed influencers, disgraced celebrities, and obnoxious "tools" to generate downloads and ad dollars.
Third, independent podcasts are endangered, just like amphibians (frogs and salamanders). As the big boys (or girls) like Spotify trounced all over the podcasting industry in the last two years, attempting to dominate, something definitely expected happened. These big companies tanked the industry. Thanks to "Big Podcasting," the bust has inevitably overtaken the boom cycle. Jobs have been lost, careers damaged or ended, good ideas sent to limbo, and talent wasted.
Without further ado, here are my top ten indie podcasts of 2023.
 10. Salad with A Side Of Fries --  At the beginning of each episode, host Jenn Trepeck says, "Welcome to Salad With A Side Of Fries, talking wellness and weight loss for real life. I'll clear up the myths, misinformation, bad science, and marketing and teach you how to eat and how to cheat."Now, this is my kind of wellness, diet, and fitness podcast. I don't want to run seven miles on the beach in army boots. Or go to CrossFit and flip tractor tires. Can Trepeck be my trainer?
9. Trashy Divorces / What A Creep -- Two similar podcasts with four strong female co-hosts who nail the shitty behavior of celebrities. You'll smirk at their snark and smile at their sarcasm.
8. The Art Career -- The Art Career podcast with Emily McElwreath  celebrates the arts, the people involved, and the value the arts add to the vibrancy of our culture. Most importantly, the podcast illustrates that the arts can be a solution, a coping mechanism, and a way forward when dealing with chronic societal problems such as domestic violence.
7. Murder Sheet-- The best true-crime podcast out there, and it's an independent venture. Co-hosts, journalist Áine Cain and attorney Kevin Greenlee, exemplify what true-crime hosts should do instead of the junk podcasts about crime. They're sensational without all the phony sensationalism.
6. Adoption: The Making Of Me -- Two adult adoptees, Sarah Reinhardt and Louise Browne, decided to delve into all things adoption, from their perspectives as adult adoptees, to DNA testing, to nature vs. nurture and beyond. It's a masterclass in the importance of family. Bring tissues.
5. 6 Degrees Of Cats -- What I like most about 6 Degrees of Cats is its scholarly intentions toward cats, the hosting skill of Amanda B, and the catchy friskiness of its audio. It's chatty, cathartic, but never catty.
4. Vanishing Postcards -- It’s a documentary travelogue that invites listeners on a road trip exploring the hidden dives and histories found by exiting the interstates. Host Evan Stern is the connective tissue who illustrates how Americans revel in their distinctness but still have much in common.
3. Nerdpreneur -- The podcast boasts that it "interviewed dozens of niche professionals from all over the world, including board game designers, dice retailers, D&D content creators, tarantula breeders, and even a German zombie magician!"
It's a podcast from Frank Bailey and Chris Saunders that has successfully carved out its own topic niche that is the recombinant DNA of business entrepreneurship and nerdiness.
2. Multispective -- The host of Multispective, Jennica Sadhwani, says, "We believe each person has a unique story to tell. Experiences, both good and bad, shape our everyday lives. Many of us go through similar things, yet our stories are never the same."
Sadhwani is masterful as she searches for insights inside the narrative of her guests, not sensationalized details that can shock.
1. The Life Shift -- host Matt Gilhooly has candid conversations with people about the pivotal moments that changed their lives forever. This podcast can help you through your "life-altering moment."
In his non-podcast life, I believe Gilhooly is a teacher. He must be a hell of a good teacher, because listeners learn a lot from his conversations with people who have gone through the meat grinder and come out as close to whole as possible.
Honorable mention to Playing Anne Frank, a seven-episode limited series that debuted in January and was conceived, written, and directed by Adam Langer.
The winners will receive a graphic that illustrates their inclusion on this highly prestigious list. No, Daniel Ek, you can't have one.
What are your favorite indie podcasts? There are thousands of great ones out there.

Teen Suicide
"When you feel like giving up, just remember the reason why you held on for so long.” -Hayley Williams
Ruhani hosts a very important hour that focuses on teen suicide and suicide prevention. She interviews Elliot H Kallen, President of A Brighter Day, a 501 c3 that offers resources for teens to stop suicide. Ruhani emphasizes that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.  She also shares poems and warning signs of possible suicide. If you're feeling lonely and experiencing suicidal thoughts, please consider the following steps:
1.    Reach out to someone you trust.
2.
Seek professional help.
3.
Contact a helpline such as 741741
4.
Create a safety plan:
5.
Avoid isolation.
6.
Reach out to online communities.
7.
Take care of your physical health.
8.
Remove or secure potential means of self-harm.
Elliot discusses the various free programs that A Brighter Day offers. His 19-year-old son, Jake, took his life when he was depressed. Elliot is devoting his life to creating a brighter day for other teens. He is frank about the necessity to get positive programming to youth to alleviate the stress and depression young people feel today. Social media has caused an injustice for youth. A Brighter Day unites stress and depression resources with teens and their parents with the goal of stopping teen suicide.
Life Can Be Hard as You Transition Into Adulthood.

Since I’m bound to get followers who aren’t aware of the American Girl Podcast that I reference in my header, I should probably make it clear that it is not a reference to the American Girl Podcast Network which was launched in 2022. I have been enjoying the 10 Minute Mysteries podcast very much. It is very soothing to listen to, and Maggie Lawson does a surprisingly good British accent for Emily.

Hey dollies! Let’s do our own year in review post for the fandom!
2022 has been a very eventful one for American Girl fans!
I’m doing this wrap-up of the year simply because of how many changes and surprises we witnessed from AG. Looking at the data, a new direction from the company began in 2020, they seem to be trying to re-capture the unique and special qualities they first brought to the world 36 years ago. At the same time, though, they’re not purely just repeating what they’ve done in the past. They’re trying entirely new things and introducing new products in order to keep the brand fresh, contemporary, and full of surprises.
The year kicked off, as it always does, with the introduction of the new Girl of the Year. Towards the end of 2021, we here on Tumblr had racked our brains trying to figure out why American Girl had trademarked two full names, and we speculated on the possibilities: could it be twins? Was it a brother and sister pair? We were pleasantly surprised to finally meet Corinne Tan and her younger sister, Gwynn. Corinne debuted a new face mold made specifically for her, and Gwynn was released as a 14-inch doll. This marked the first time that sibling characters were released together! Their story centers around their lives in Aspen, Colorado, and the winter sports they enjoy. We also learned about their struggles of having divorced and remarried parents, their training of a search-and-rescue dog, and the racism they face that reflects the experiences of real Asian-American children. American Girl partnered with the organization AAPI Youth Rising to shine a light on the good they’re doing to make the world a better place for Asian American and Pacific Islander children in the United States.
To round out the summer, we were then blessed with the presence of Claudie Wells, a new historical character from 1922 in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City. This came as a surprise to nearly no one; we here on Tumblr have spent years discussing, yearning for, and dreaming up a Harlem Renaissance character. We did a pretty good job of predicting a character just like Claudie! Click here to read that post that summarizes our predictions and how many of those elements we got right!
We also welcomed back our dear retired friend, Molly McIntire, and lots of pieces from her original collection! While it’s happened a few times before that beloved older characters have been brought out of retirement, it has always happened alongside a major revamp of the character, with new outfits and accessories. Think about Samantha being brought back with a pink dress. But this was the first time that parts of a retired character’s original collection have been re-released alongside her. That is also a very encouraging sign that American Girl may someday do the same for other long-retired characters. I’m sure all of us would love to see the return of Kirsten Larson, who has been put away in the archives for more than a decade now.
The final big surprise this year was the complete revamp of the Truly Me dolls. If you’re not familiar with them, Truly Me is the name for the line of dolls who are sold nameless and without character backgrounds. They are available with a variety of face molds, skin tones, and hairstyles so that you can choose one who looks like you, or one who doesn’t. They’re specifically meant for you to be creative and come up with your doll’s story and personality. This year, all the existing Truly Me dolls were retired and sent into the archive--and they were replaced with 25 brand new dolls with new looks! Newer face molds were added to the line, as well as the long-retired Marie-Grace face mold, a fan favorite that has had high demand on the secondhand market ever since its last production in 2014. Many of the dolls have colorful hair and all but four have extra painted-on eyelashes.
In smaller news, American Girl launched a podcast network with several new podcasts covering several topics. For news and behind-the-scenes discussion, there’s The American Girls Fan Club. And Ten-Minute Mysteries presents a reading of novel-length historical mysteries. The Smart Girls Podcast expands upon topics covered in the A Smart Girl’s Guide To.... series of nonfiction advice books geared at a slightly older child audience.
Now, for my favorite part.... running the numbers! I do this pretty frequently. Check out my #data tag to see posts like this one if you enjoy that sort of thing.
So I’m sure it’s no surprise to know that 2022 takes first place for the number of new dolls released by American Girl.
That includes:
2 Girl of the Year: Corinne Tan and Gwynn Tan
2 historical characters: 1922 Claudie Wells and the re-release of 1944 Molly McIntire
25 Truly Me dolls: numbers 100-124
2 mini baby dolls: Blix and the second of two Caring for Baby sets
1 limited edition holiday doll: Sapphire Splendor
1 WellieWisher: Bryant
That is a grand total of 33 new dolls! The only categories that didn’t have a new doll release in 2022 were Bitty Baby, World By Us, and 6-inch mini character dolls.
Here’s my original post from summer 2021 that calculates the average number of dolls released each year. I was a little more strict with the numbers I used, so the average is perhaps a tiny bit lower than it could realistically be. Either way, at the time of that post, the average number of new dolls released each year was approximately 4. With complete data from 2021 and 2022 included, and expanded to include all categories of dolls (not just 18 inch and including all special editions), that number actually goes up to 5.2 new dolls released per year! That’s a big increase!
Before this year, 2009 saw the most abundant release of dolls, with a total of 23. That includes 20 Truly Me dolls (#s 33-52), 3 Girls of the Year (Chrissa Maxwell, Sonali Matthews, and Gwen Thompson), and 1 historical (Rebecca Rubin). Taking third place was 1995, when the first 20 original Girl of Today dolls were released. After 2009′s generous offerings, the number of new dolls began to plummet, and came close to the average.
It’s becoming quite obvious that the 2020′s are a new era. 2019 gave us only 3 dolls in 2 categories (Girl of the Year and Truly Me), and only 3 years later we've got 33 dolls in 6 categories. In fact, in 2022, more dolls were released than in 2021 and 2020 combined!
For 2021, dolls released included:
1 Girl of the Year: Kira Bailey
3 World By Us characters: Makena Williams, Maritza Ochoa, and Evette Peeters
1 Caring for Baby 8-inch doll
3 Truly Me dolls: 89, 90, and 91
2 Winter Princess dolls
6 re-released historical characters as 35th anniversary limited edition dolls
1 new Sparkling Ballerina blonde-blue eyed doll available in a Costco doll-and-accessory gift package (the other three released were existing and re-dressed Truly Me dolls; the blonde one was the only unique doll never before released) (this is what I mean when I say I’m deliberately being very generous with the numbers)
That’s a total of 17 dolls. Which is still higher than average! And we’re seeing a lot more categories of dolls as well! Holiday and anniversary special edition dolls, 8-inch baby dolls, and World By Us are all newly introduced in the 2020′s.
In 2020 itself:
1 Girl of the Year Joss Kendrick
1 Historical character Courtney Moore
1 Holiday Limited Edition Sugarplum Fairy
6 Truly Me dolls 83-88
Courtney’s mini Molly doll
3 limited edition “Swarovski Crystals Couture for a Cause” dolls: Sweet as a Rose, Fuchsia Feathers, and Boho Chic
Elf on the Shelf doll
For a total of 14 in 2020, and so that’s a total of 31 in 2020 and 2021 combined. Even if you’re going to point out that maybe Molly shouldn’t be counted as a new release, 2022 still wins. But what a difference that’s making to the numbers! The average number of dolls released in the 2020′s is 21.3 dolls. So it’ll be interesting to see how many we’ll get in 2023! Likely the number will be smaller than it was this year. There are only so many times an entire category can be revamped the way Truly Me was.
Partnering with other brands, charities, and institutions is also an upwardly moving trend. This year, AG had numerous collaborations in the release of new products and books. Those include:
Janie and Jack
LoveShackFancy
Harry Potter
Swarovski
Harlem Fashion Row
Harlem School of the Arts
Kidcraft
AAPI Youth Rising
HBO Max
Cartoon Network
To sum up the partnerships:
Swarovski is a returning collaborator for the fourth year in a row, having first made an appearance on an American Girl product in late 2019, when three $5000 special edition dolls were released, each wearing a gown adorned with Swarovski crystals. They did the same for the special edition dolls in 2020 and 2021.
Janie & Jack and LoveShackFancy both produced seasonal mix-and-match clothing collections for the Truly Me line.
Partnering with Harry Potter branded doll clothing was a surprising move that disappointed a lot of fans who disagree with series’ author JK Rowling’s derogatory public statements about the trans community. American Girl as of yet has not responded to any criticism about this partnership, and in fact completely ignores all critical comments on their social media.
Harlem Fashion Row collaborated with AG to make parts of Claudie’s collection, including three outfits inspired by the 1920′s.
To celebrate Claudie’s release and to pay tribute to the neighborhood she called home, American Girl is accepting donations to Harlem School of the Arts.
Kidcraft partnered with AG to make the multi-story Luxury Dollhouse sized for 18 inch dolls, which I’m surprised hasn’t happened until this year.
Cartoon Network and HBO Max are producing a movie based on Corinne’s story. That is set to release some time this month.
So that about wraps it up for this year.
I know I’m not speaking only for myself when I say that I’m excited about what 2023 will bring. I’m certain we’ll get some nice surprises. The new Girl of the Year will likely break ground in some way. Claudie’s collection will expand. Maybe we’ll see a retired historical character brought out of the archives, with a restored collection. And there’s a strong possibility of seeing one or more entirely new historical characters released.
If I didn’t mention your most memorable moment of this year, feel free to chime in!

A Breath Of Fresh Air Podcast: A Gold Medal Show About The Oldies
Tumblr media
Gordon Lightfoot, the Canadian singer-songwriter whose enduring folk hits included “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” and “Sundown,”died last week. He was 84.
Lightfoot found success on the US pop charts in 1970 with the song “If You Could Read My Mind.” That track also earned the artist his second of four Grammy nominations, that one for best malepop vocal performance.
Lightfoot’s songs have been covered by numerous legendary artists, including Dylan, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Neil Young, Barbra Streisand, and Eric Clapton, according to the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.
In July 2022, Lightfoot was interviewed by Australian broadcaster Sandy Kaye for her radio show and podcast A Breath Of Fresh Air.
Lightfoot, in that interview, talked about being in a state of repentance, giving up alcohol and other vices. Lightfoot talked about his two-and-a-half year recovery from an aortic aneurysm. He told Kaye that his big hit, “If You Could Read My Mind” was about the end of his first marriage.
When Lightfoot died, Kaye replayed that episode as a tribute to the singer-songwriter.
Those most Americans don't know her, Sandy Kaye is an extraordinary woman and broadcaster, journalist, and producer who has spent more than 35 years on both sides of radio and television microphones. She has worked with every TV network in Australia, and has hosted her own commercial radio talk-back show. She even held the distinction of being Sydney’s first female newsreader on radio.
Kaye began A Breath Of Fresh Air as a COVID project. It’s now a weekly, hour-long show that’s broadcast on radio stations right across the world, and it can be heard as a podcast on all major podcast platforms.
This is what Kaye says about her podcast: "A Breath of Fresh Air is my passion project. I wake up with it and go to sleep at night with it. I research, produce and present relentlessly and spend a great deal of time finding the artists you hear.  It gives me a great deal of pleasure to share these stories with you. Together we learn about where their music took root, how they navigated the road to success, and what’s happened to them since. We get in behind the songs and hear them too. It’s fascinating stuff and, I think, makes for some easy, fun, and engrossing listening."
So what does Sandy Kaye do on A Breath Of Fresh Air? First, she interviews pop music stars from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Yes, that's right. The 60s!
Kaye interviewed teen idol Bobby Sherman in March 2023 about his TV and music career. Late that month, she talked to Elliott Lurie of the group Looking Glass, who wrote and sang Brandy, a 1972 top ten hit. Lurie explains how the song originally was built around his high school girlfriend, Randy. A year after the song peaked on the charts, the girl's name Brandy skyrocketed in popularity. In an odd twist of fate, Barry Manilou had written and recorded a completely different song called Brandy, and the singer was reluctant to, but ultimately convinced, to change the name of the song to Mandy.
So if you're a fan of 60s, 70s, and 80s music and enjoying reminiscing with the artists who made those hits, A Breath Of Fresh Air will get you tapping, clapping, and humming. Kaye is generous in playing those old hits with excerpts running over a minute, sometimes two.
Kaye excels at corralling reluctant guests. After all, many of these people are in their 80s. An example is John Kay of Steppenwolf, who admitted in the beginning of the podcast interview how reluctant he was to do her show, To Kaye's credit, she warmed him up, and John Kay was a fascinating interview.
This year alone, Kaye has interviewed Gary Puckett, Supertramp's founding member John Helliwell, the Go-Gos drummer Gina Schock, singer Melissa Manchester, John Ford Coley, and Felix Cavalliere of The Rascals.
With so much experience in broadcasting, Kaye is as fluid as water as a host. She exudes an approachable warmth with a rich, sweet-sounding voice, and a strong desire to please her guests and her listeners.
Yet, don't misconstrue her for weakness. Kaye can ask the tough questions about controversies that arose when these musical artists were at the height of their popularity.
What makes these interviews -- and the show -- so captivating is listening to musicians who were famous during those decades, and  hear their perspective now as people in their 60s, 70s, and 80s. If there are any common themes about these remembrances of fame, the artists all seem to characterize their sudden popularity as a whirlwind in which they were too busy to enjoy it. Others admit mistakes, and chuckle at the decisions they made in their youth.
If you're someone who was there and part of the music of the 60s, 70s, or 80s, you'll definitely revel in the memory lane free trip. But if you're a millennial or Gen Zer, there's also something for you in these recollections by iconic musical artists.
Check out A Breath Of Fresh Air. It can take you back to your youth, or, at least, offer younger listeners insights into why Baby Boomers are the way they are.
