Bad Guys Win

Recent NFL off-season activities and signings have raised an age-old debate. Roger Goodell and NFL power brokers take a strong stance on league discipline with regard to how and who they enforce it upon. They always want, at least in the eyes of the public, to be seen to take a high moral stance towards the way they police the game.

It’s abundantly clear that this in no way will ever prove to be an easy or simple undertaking. With thirty-two teams carrying upwards of ninety players each, this means a lot of code of conduct violations to keep track of. All this even before deciding on punishment which requires being in accordance with the players union. Whilst this can all be rationalized, the deeper ingrained attitudes of how the team’s themselves handle errant players navigates much muddier waters.

Recent player discipline issues have dogged the Kansas City Chiefs in particular. Tyreek Hill is one player who appears to be in a fight for his NFL future. His legal team’s recent letter stating his case to the commissioner and denying child abuse allegations puts another hot potato on the league’s table. An extremely damning audio tape might not yet doom Hill’s NFL season and career beyond, as a similar letter to the players union has now set multiple processes into motion. Another Chiefs star, Kareem Hunt, whose assault was caught by CCTV cameras, is now in an altogether tougher spot, and now ply’s his trade with a new team in Cleveland while he serves a six game suspension. Skeptics would point to a huge element of risk and reward in the Chiefs strategy when it comes to both players and their well-documented, troubled pasts.

Across the league similar risky signings have occurred. Rueben Foster’s recent season ending knee injury served to remind fans of his controversial signing with Washington in the first place; he had previously faced two domestic violence arrests last season. As his charges were dropped, the NFL cleared Foster to participate in the team OTA’s that cost him his new opportunity due to injury. Further previous drug and weapon charges against Foster led to him being seen as a behavior risk, not worth taking for most teams before Senior VP of Player Personnel Doug Williams opted to sign him in Washington.

Traditionally over the years the Oakland Raiders have often found themselves as the safe refuge for troubled players. Under John Gruden and Mike Maylock this team policy seems as vibrant and active as it was in the past. Recent off-season acquisitions of line-backer, Vontaze Burfict, and wide-receiver, Antonio Brown, signaled the intent to embrace combustible locker-room talents. Granted with both most of their misdemeanors have been confined within their teams, but Burfict alone has tallied an NFL record of $4.2 million in league fines.

As if to stick the cherry on top of the whole situation, the team has recently signed frequently troubled guard, Richie Incognito. His long list of dirty on field transgressions have led to a large number of fines during his own career. Add to this, claims of alleged bullying of a teammate during his tenure as a Dolphin, and subsequently even more troubling altercations in his recent brief period of retirement. These have included a violent incident at a gym and two further meltdowns; one at a funeral home following his father’s death which involved threats to return with a firearm and another at his grandmother’s nursing home where he ripped an alarm off and punched a hole in the wall. In a recent press conference Incognito’s new GM, Mike Maylock, defended signing the thirty-six year old by commenting that, “a team can’t be made up entirely of boy scouts”.

Of course this is very true and stands for all thirty-two NFL teams. The deeper issue comes in how it is constantly spun and presented to the fans who watch the game. The conundrum the league has now is how to clean up its problem players while still maintaining the talent within a very violent game, and this is likely to roll on for many years to come.
