Alright, this will be the final post today about the making of The Rhythm of the City in 2019. Just a few random behind-the-scenes clips I found on an hard drive I thought I’d share today, now that the album is two years old. This was my first time in the studio with @dannybanksdrummer and @thewilsonmc together, but happily it would not be the last. And this was my fourth album to be graced by @algamble1 on the keys. The entire record was a mixture of analog and digital technology, back and forth from one to the other. We tracked the basics live on @electraphonic’s 8-track Scully, with drums on two tracks, including my live vocal and lead guitar. We then transferred those 8 tracks to digital where we added bgvs, percussion, and yes, ELECTRIC SITAR! (Thank you, @highlowrecording!). Although we mixed digitally, we used much analog gear in the process of course, including Scott’s Ampex tape machine for slapback echo, just like Sam Phillips did at Sun Studio in 1954. Then the mix was digitized and mastered, uploaded to the streaming servers, and sent off to the pressing plant, where it became analog again and went on to become 7 different colors of vinyl over the next two years thanks to @wildhoneyrecords___. Thank you Scott Bomar and @adamemphis1457 for making everything sound awesome. I’m gonna miss that little studio on South Main. I have to record one minute of music for @jailbreakguitars custom shop, it will be the soundtrack of a video they’re shooting. This is how I recorded the first part of the acoustic guitar, some little technical details below.. 💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀 Three sources: two mics set up + Maton Piezo: with the Neumann U87 pointed toward the sound hole to pick up the lower frequencies, and the second mic (Apex 460 tube mic set in Omni pattern) pointed far toward the fingerboard to pick up the attack and the room. The acoustic guitar’s frequency range covers several octaves, which means a wide range of different audio wavelengths. Since the mics are a fixed distance from the source, those different waves will arrive at the mics at different points. The process of converting my home space into a recording space is something I’ve been dreaming of for a few years now. This past week I started the process with cleaning up the room, painting the floors and building some rolling sound paneling. This process will continue as time goes on and I continue to add more to the room but this start has been a VERY rewarding experience for me. I know I’ve been posting a lot of studio pics lately, but it’s because…well, I love it. Many of the world’s great analog studios are threatened by the march of time, but here in Memphis we are lucky to have some of the most significant recoding spaces in the world still in operation and making records every day. @samphillipsrecording is the studio Sam opened in 1960 after he sold Sun. They cut “Wooly Bully” by Sam the Sham there. The Yardbirds cut their version of “Train Kept A-Rolin’” at Phillips. It’s where John Prine made his “Pink Cadillac” album, with Knox, Jerry, and Sam producing. And I was fortunate to get to make a record of my own there a decade ago with the late Roland Janes, a special experience I will always treasure. So I’m especially honored to be playing some guitar on the sessions for the upcoming Jerry Phillips original project, and I can’t wait for everyone to hear the killer rock and roll tunes he’s been writing. They’ve made a lot of exciting changes at Phillips recently, and I’m really happy it worked out for @electraphonic to be behind the desk - which is now the Spectra Sonic console that was originally at Stax Studio B, which can be heard on Isaac Hayes’ “Black Moses” album, to name just one. It is newly-refurbished and sounds fabulous. And there’s nothing like tracking live with reverb in your headphones from an actual echo chamber down the hall. Like the song says, “ain’t nothing like the real thing baby.” It’s also especially cool to get to work with the homies on all this, @dannybanksdrummer and the multi-talented @thewilsonmc, who brought along his camera last week for our session with @commonwealther, and got these nice shots.
