One of the world’s biggest botnet networks, responsible for stealing close to $6 billion (£4.7bn), has been shut down following an international effort from law enforcement agencies.

The US Justice Department, which led the operation, said the 911 S5 botnet comprised more than 19 million hijacked devices, which were being used to facilitate cyber attacks, large-scale fraud, bomb threats and even child exploitation.

Chinese national YunHe Wang, 35, was arrested on 24 May on suspicion of creating and operating the 911 S5 botnet from his home in St. Kitts and Nevis.

“This Justice Department-led operation brought together law enforcement partners from around the globe to disrupt 911 S5,” said US Attorney General Merrick Garland.

“This case makes clear that the long arm of the law stretches across borders and into the deepest shadows of the dark web, and the Justice Department will never stop fighting to hold cyber criminals to account.”

The FBI said the 911 S5 botnet infected computers in nearly 200 countries around the world, which were then controlled through 150 dedicated servers allegedly set up by Mr Wang.

An indictment unsealed on 24 May claimed that malware was used to infect and compromise millions of residential computers between 2014 and 2022, forming the botnet that was then able to carry out the cyber crimes.

Mr Wang allegedly sold access to the botnet to criminals, who then used it to bypass fraud detection systems in order to steal billions of dollars from financial institutions.

One target was reportedly a pandemic relief program in the US, which saw the botnet used to fraudulently make insurance claims from the hijacked IP addresses. More than half a million false claims resulted in losses of $5.9 billion for the programs, according to the FBI.

“Working with our international partners, the FBI conducted a joint, sequenced cyber operation to dismantle the 911 S5 Botnet – likely the world’s largest botnet ever,” said FBI Director Christopher Wray.

“We arrested its administrator, Yunhe Wang, seized infrastructure and assets, and levied sanctions against Wang and his co-conspirators... We will work tirelessly to unmask and arrest the cybercriminals who profit from this illegal activity.”

Mr Wang made around $99 million by selling access to the botnet, according to the indictment, which he used to purchase real estate in the US, St. Kitts and Nevis, China, Singapore, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates.

Other assets subject to forfeiture are two BMWs, a Ferrari, a Rolls Royce and several luxury wristwatches.

“The conduct alleged here reads like it’s ripped from a screenplay: A scheme to sell access to millions of malware-infected computers worldwide, enabling criminals over the world to steal billions of dollars, transmit bomb threats, and exchange child exploitation materials – then using the scheme’s nearly $100 million in profits to buy luxury cars, watches, and real estate,” said Matthew Axelrod of the US Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security.

“What they don’t show in the movies though is the painstaking work it takes by domestic and international law enforcement, working closely with industry partners, to take down such a brazen scheme and make an arrest like this happen.”

Mr Wang faces a maximum penalty of 65 years in prison if convicted.

Routing Mess

Well, I got a router to get better control over my network. I have an ISP that shall not be named that wouldn't let me get certain perks unless I use their router/modem hybrid motherfucker. It has a disgusting lack of configuration, so I bit the bullet and got a TP-Link AX1800 router from Wal-Mart. I hear these things die after a few years BUT it already has granted so much more control over my network than the other thing. I can finally route all DNS through Lenny (Raspberry Pi) so I'm utilizing Pi-hole to its fullest.

UNFORTUNATELY I did not prepare properly for the move, so I ended up blowing up my Proxmox cluster. I just acquired a very old Gateway PC from like, 2012, and I've been using it as a second member of my cluster (the Nuclear cluster). His name is Nicholas and he's got a 5 dollar terabyte drive that's used but passes the smart check. However, after switching over to the new router and following some instructions improperly for the Proxmox install on Julian (Gateway PC) and Adelle (Dell PC), the Nuclear Cluster royally broke and I had to reinstall on Julian and remove Adelle from the cluster. I also had to update Caddy and a bunch of other services to make everything work again because I moved from one IP address scheme to another.

Anyway, let me tell you about getting Julian (Gateway). I found this computer part store that's just full of computer junk. Anything and everything. My boyfriend drove me over there and I went in with him and the place is LINED with COMPUTERS and computer parts and computers running without cases and it was just BEAUTIFUL. I'm poking through PCs, trying to find a cheap one I can make into a NAS, and it's kinda hard because I'm in a wheelchair and all the PCs are on the ground and it's a small place, so my boyfriend starts poking around too. And then he goes, "HEY LOOK", and he rotates a desktop PC around and IT'S A GATEWAY! An old-ass Gateway. And I just had to bring it home!

Then today I found a PC for like 10 bucks, but it doesn't have RAM. It's once again a Dell.

I also brought home another Dell that I plan to make my media server. Any ideas on names?

Yokai Watch released its last game in 2019. It has a bright chibi arstyle, though excusable for being Asia exclusive.

Cassette Beasts was released last year and has a pretty good diagetic UI and some cool Digimon-inspired designs with a more unique weakness system.

Shin Megami Tensei released its landmark fifth mainline game back in 2021, a series with harder gameplay, harsher themes of order vs. chaos, stability vs. freedom, the ugliness of humanity and how people lose themselves to power which are all integrated into gameplay and aesthetics just as well.

You stand here instead choosing to support a game with designs bordering on plagiarism, a game by your own implication has no real indentity of its own, just to be spiteful towards a company rather than supporting the closer competitors that would undercut Pokemon more anyway.

I feel bad, but also I am kind of sipping tea, because when I was able to recognize his voice easily, because Lucifer, but... Welp... I can't relate at all to how you feel about it since Sakurai was legit one of the first seiyuu i really obsessed over (he played two formative characters from my childhood that i was obsessing over when i was 13, ironically also paired with Suzuken, so i've had a lot of affection for his voice ever since, and seeing him paired with Suzuken in gbf again felt really on brand. All the more reasons for me to be sad), so personally i could never find he was out of place anywhere, it was just, ah, funny Sakurai following me around and giving me characters with similar thematic to haunt me!

of course i feel bad for the victims of it all first and formost, especially since both mistresses came forward with a lot of health issues due to the stress the whole situation put them through it's just. another layer of horrible. I don't think it's fair to think about the outrage in the sense of "will it change anything?" i think just having compassion for the people involved is enough. When it comes to his roles, it's so tricky because it's not just GBF to take into account. None of the big franchise that relies on Sakurai's name has done anything to distance himself from him, hell, between those two scandals ff7 released a new game where Sakurai took back his iconic role, and mp100 got its new season where Sakurai's character is just as beloved as ever. And we know GBF brought him back for the NY's intro with Lucio as well. And i also saw a recent anime announcement of a brand new IP hiring Sakurai, while they don't even have the excuse of trying to stay consistant with legendary characters he played.

It's like everyone is agreeing it's a very fucked up things he's done but he's too associated to their brands for them to do anything about it. It's so wild and confusing and hard to really predict where it's going to go from here.

GBF alrready announced 5* Lucifer and i don't see them announcing a recast so far, so it's really difficult to know if they even can terminate their countract with Sakurai at this point.

(To this day the only efficient seiyuu scandal solving i saw was with a3 when one of the seiyuu came out as rancid and a3 and his company literally dumped him the day after everything about him came to light, and they replaced him in the following week by the actor who played his character in the stage adaptation of the game. Then in the month that followed his voicelines were completely muted from the game and they revoiced the whole thing with the new VA in the following year. It was so swift and efficient that now when i just see them all go silent and wait for it to get quiet again, i just think they don't think it's worth addressing to start with lmao. Tho we are talking vastly different level of crimes so it is probably not the best scale for me to judge that with).

Next stream should mention things about Evokers's 5* yes, and we're all waiting for Vikala's 5* announcement. They should also show a trailer for the new anni event there, so we gotta stay tuned.

Answers from the writers Part 2: What comes next? Parallels between LN and LN2

You can find Part 1 here, it mainly deals with character motivation.

In this part I mainly want to address a miscellaneous question from the previous interviews as well as a video interview with senior narrative designer David Mervik, which you can watch on YouTube.

The first question deals with regards to the ending in both games:

It may sound crazy to think that the endings are not so different, but they aren’t:

-Both Six and Mono gain an immense amount of power by the end

-They are both chained down by those powers: Six’s hunger, the tower and Mono still exist

-They are both alone and still trapped by that world

The way I personally look at this, is that both Mono and Six in a way wound up cursing each other. Thin man (Mono) forcibly ripping Six’s soul is what caused her hunger, likewise Six dropping Mono in the tower is what caused him to be trapped by it.

Little Nightmares: Deals with Six’s character

My prediction for Little Nightmares 3 is that it will bring this whole situation dealing with both characters as the main focus, and resolve their storylines. To quote the achievement when you complete the DLC, which as it turns out, was never talking about the Runaway Kid, but someone else (Mono):

If you listen closely, you can hear the sound of Seagulls at the end of both post credit scenes for the first game, which is now officially confirmed to be a sequel to LN2. They will meet again indeed.

I feel like this particular interview, doesn’t get enough attention. But it does bring up some important points regarding the lore, as well as ease worries for those that think another studio working on the next installment may ruin LN. Some notable points:

- LN2 development started a bit after LN DLC finished for a short break, but the lore kept developing over the entire time.

-Mervick wrote 150-200 pages of lore by the time they started LN2 dev, there may be more by now. -It is mostly a biography for all the LN characters, such as the resident. What drives them, their backstory, etc.

-”You guys think you will ever release the book?” -Mervick: “That's up to Bandai, they own the IP. Maybe if its the right time, to give the people something definitive.” -"We didn't want to tell people too much, like where they were born. You didn't really get to play it yourself in that case."

- "All the children come from [pause] They don't belong in this world" -"What kind of pattern shaped their life, and what brought them here?" 

- "The continuation of their journey" -"They (the children) are here for a reason" -"Something that happened before in their lives that made them a good "fit" for Little Nightmares"

- "That's about as much as I should probably say"

- First game came out of nowhere while the sequel got to build off of a familiar name -People are completely starved for new horror games so when one actually comes out and streamers latch onto it word-of-mouth spreads faster -The sequel's dynamic of actually traveling/caring about another characters adds another level of emotional investment that spawns more discussion and fan art.

- They didn't want dialogue, but rather wanted the player to piece it together on their own.

- "The comics are a good way to give the players more, about things they may never encounter in the actual game"

- In a lot of corporate words and stuff,, the writer basically says that Bandai really liked LN, kept it in its original state, and bought into it as it was.

-Inspiration for LN are: Novels by Roald Dahl, specifically how things actually seemed to happen to kids in the books. Also the book Momo (The grey gentlemen) by Michael Ende

News about the TV Show:

-Interviewer: A while ago, it was announced that Henry Selick (Coraline, Nightmare before christmas director) would be working Little Nightmares project. Could you say anything about that (25:40)

-Writer: I have no idea, since I'm not present at the discussions for that. If anything is released or needs to be announced, its gonna come from Bandai.

So TV show is still up the air. Hasn't been canceled yet as far as they know, but still no news yet.

Man, it feels pretty weird to be hyped for a live-action adaptation of an anime. Yet, here I am. I think it’s not so much that I’m burnt out by the idea of “live-action anime” as much as I’m really fucking tired of the “Americanization” of anime. US studios have been modifying anime for US sensibilities since the 60s and most of the recent US remakes of Japanese IP feel like expensive Saban localizations.

But other countries that have adapted Japanese anime to film and television seem to have brought on people who really adore and respect the source material. I’m hoping this will be the case with GMA’s Voltes V teleserye adaption.

At this point I don’t expect to have positive attitudes towards super robot media written by those who grew up in the nation that has actually used nuclear weaponry against another nation. Particularly, if they dismiss the genre as nothing more than extended “boy’s toys” commercials. 

However, Voltes V is respected in the Philippines in part because of its political themes. At one point, it was banned rather than censored to the point of being ideologically unthreatening. Eventually, the full series was allowed to be released, which led to much speculation as to what was the real reason why President Ferdinand Marcos pulled the series from broadcast before the last four episode could air.

I also feel like I can trust that Philippines script writers will have more personal experiences of themes such as fear of invasion and colonization of a clearly European-inspired Empire, rising up against the monarchy and aristocracy, and a nuance reflection of what it means to be of mixed-heritage of both native and foreign parentage. There’s also a lot more political themes present in the source material that I’m interested in seeing if/how they are addressed in adaptation. 

I am still warry of how some things will be handled in the adaptation, but overall I’m hopeful that this adaption will be enjoyable.

In 2017 a massive cyber attack took down the National Health Service in England. Thousands of appointments and potentially life saving operations were delayed or cancelled, as well as the relocation of many Critical Patients.

This attack wasn’t just targeted at the NHS. The attack brought thousands of organizations, and government agencies to a standstill. The groundwork for this attack was laid years in advance.

On the 12th of May 2017 at 07:44 Coordinated Universal Time the attack would begin, with the earliest infections appearing in India, Hong Kong and the Philippines. It would then spread like wildfire, duplicating itself to an estimated 230’000 computers worldwide. Multinational Corporations were hit such as Boeing, FedEx, Honda, Renault and Nissan. Governments too were on the receiving end of these attacks; The NHS, PetroChina, Russian Railways, Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation and countless universities throughout the world. The fallout was huge, as these massive organizations were effectively crippled. The most prominent impact of the hack was its effect on the NHS. As up to 70’000 devices were impacted, this included computers, MRI scanners, Blood Storage equipment and various other forms of hospital equipment. Effectively crippling the capabilities of hospitals throughout the UK.

Cyber Security experts were quick to approach the issue, advising affected users to not pay the Ransom on principle and because they had found there was no way for the Lazarus group to actually identify the user who paid and their computer therefore nullifying their ability to decrypt the files. Despite multiple large organizations working on reverting the damage, it was a single independent researcher Marcus Hutchins who would make a huge breakthrough. 

Marcus would sit down at his computer at 2:30 PM local time in the UK. After receiving a large amount of messages about the NHS being hacked he would search for and obtain a sample of the Wannacry Ransomware. Marcus would then utilize a virtual environment to run the malware, where he would be met with the ransom page. However Marcus had noticed that Wannacry began attempting to connect to random IP addresses using SMB or Server Message Block.

It had occurred to Marcus that the programme was attempting to contact a specific domain amongst the other domains, he decided to register the malware control server or c2 domain, as it was not active. The server took the form of a DNS sinkhole otherwise known as a Blackhole DNS. This type of server provides false results to anything attempting to connect. Shortly afterwards he was contacted by another cyber security expert asking for the sample he had acquired, the expert who worked for Talos noted he could not get the Wannacry software to start connecting to random IP addresses. In fact it is at this time that Marcus had realized, he had accidentally prevented the spread of the Wannacry software.

Marcus had unknowingly uncovered what has since been described as a kill switch, but Marcus himself theorizes it was most likely a poorly made anti-analysis tool which would prevent cyber security experts from reviewing the attack. The Wannacry ransomware attack would only proceed to encrypt files and disrupt computers if it could not connect to the designated server. Therefore when Marucs registered the Server, the software would stop spreading as it could connect to the presumed designated server. This single action which Marcus had made prevented the Wannacry virus from spreading further. In the aftermath cyber security experts were able to retrieve much of the missing data. Finally, after tracing Bitcoin traffic to and from the Bitcoin wallets tied to the Wannacry ransom researchers have found between 50-72000 USD were paid to the hackers.

6 people were indicted and one was arrested as a result of the attention applied to this case. Three direct members of the group Lazarus were uncovered, and indicted by the FBI being Park Jin Hyok, Kim IL and John Chang Hyok. All three were indicted for being a part of an alleged criminal conspiracy for some of the costliest computer intrusions in history, as well as being members of the Lazarus group. The indictments would further go on to claim that the Lazarus group, is a state sponsored group and a part of the Democratic Peoples Republic of Koreas Reconnaissance General Bureau. A Canadian citizen by the name of Ghaleb Alaumary as well as two Chinese citezen’s Tian Yinyin and Li Jiadong were charged with being intermediaries and money mules for the Lazarus group. They organized crews, of money launderers in the US and Canada to receive stolen funds and then relay them to the Lazarus group.

Lazarus remains at large.

U.S. Attorney Roger B. Handberg announced that 52-year-old Dennis William Sheffield of Keystone Heights has pleaded guilty to receipt of child sex abuse images.

Sheffield faces a minimum mandatory penalty of 15 years and up to 40 years in federal prison. He has agreed to pay restitution to the victims of his offenses, and he also faces a potential life term of supervised release. The court previously ordered Sheffield detained pending the completed proceedings in this case.

According to the plea agreement, in February, Homeland Security Investigations began looking into Sheffield as part of its investigation into a CyberTip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The CyberTip indicated child sex abuse images had been uploaded to a search engine.

The IP address for the individual who had uploaded the materials was traced to Sheffield. Law enforcement learned that Sheffield was listed as a predator on the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s Sexual Offenders and Predators registry as a result of two prior convictions in 1996 for attempted sexual battery on a child under the age of 12.

On March 3, based on the CyberTip and the identification of Sheffield as the suspect, law enforcement obtained a federal search warrant for Sheffield’s residence. The following day, law enforcement executed the search warrant and encountered Sheffield, who was holding a cellphone in his hand. A preliminary examination of the phone revealed multiple files depicting the sexual abuse of children.

Sheffield admitted to law enforcement that he had a problem and that he liked looking at child sex abuse images, which he admitted to having viewed as recently as a couple of days earlier. Sheffield also admitted to saving some of the images on his phone.

This case was investigated by the Clay County Sheriff’s Office and HSI. It is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Ashley Washington. The forfeiture is being handled by Assistant U.S Attorney Mai Tran.

This is another case brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by the United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children and to identify and rescue victims.

Facebook, as well as WhatsApp and Instagram, have been gone from the internet for hours.

Internet users, clearly, are freaking out. Facebook has stated very little about what is actually taking place, however the outage is at the moment seemingly affecting only Facebook and its services. Many experts believe it to be associated to issues with internet infrastructure, particularly DNS and BGP.

Short for for Domain Name System, the DNS is a service that permits the internet to run by translating domains such as Facebook.com into IP addresses and vice versa. For some unknown reason, Facebook’s DNS records, in addition to BGP records, are gone from the internet. BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) is the system that figures out the best route for a packet to travel across the internet.

In this information vacuum, however, conspiracy theorists have begun speculating that this can be a massive hack, that it’s tied to Sunday evening’s “60 Minutes” episode during which a Facebook whistleblower said that Facebook is intentionally misleading the public and the federal government on its efforts to curb hate speech and misinformation, or is otherwise related to Facebook’s current problems in the news.

A music studio recording business posted a screenshot of what look to be a bunch of DNS addresses on Twitter and speculated that Facebook is gone forever, which quickly went viral with literally no context by any means. The screenshot appears to be stolen from one other Twitter account known as KillFearNY, which describes itself as a creative and sports agency.

Probably the most popular theories has centered around a supposed hack that resulted in 1.5 billion Facebook records being sold on a hacking forum. In this version, individuals are pointing to a September 22 post from a supposed company referred to as X2Emails which has “more than 1.5b Database of Facebook these database scraped this year and 100% emails are included and phone as well” and is somehow linked to today’s outage.

This theory does not even pass the smell test, though. The person who posted the advertisement does not even pretend the info was stolen from Facebook. The post says it was “scraped,” and it only contains: “We only have these fields : Emails , Gender , Location , cities , dob , phone numbers , names , uid.” Scraped databases of Facebook users show up on a regular basis and have little or nothing to do with any kind of hack.

What’s worse—or better depending on your viewpoint—is that it is very likely that this is all a scam anyway.

One other user in the forum thread alerted others to not trust the seller.

“Scammer. Only sends [a sample of] 20 users. There isn’t any more. Doesn’t accept escrow(moderator). However he expects you to believe in 20 samples and send $5,000.  Instead of 1.5 billion, I believe there are 150 users of data for social engineering.  “

Aric Toler, a researcher at Bellingcat, was one of the first ones to report that folks needs to be cautious and never take this at face value.

The fact that some wannabe hacker advertises scraped data on a hacking forum that anybody can access is nothing new. It occurs every other week. Typically, hackers who post on Raid Forums do have actual hacked data, however generally they’re simply attempting to rip-off other users.

Even other forum users aren’t taking it seriously.

“Hahahaha 600 TB of Mark Zucker burger selfies :D,” one person posted in a chat.

Facebook couldn’t be reached for comment due to the outage, which nonetheless has seemingly brought about mass chaos not just online but offline, too. Reporters at the New York Times, for instance, have noted that Facebook employees have been unable to get into certain buildings. Facebook employees have additionally had to talk with each other using secondary messaging services like Discord and Zoom.

In January of this year, Motherboard reported on a real incident where attackers scraped Facebook, obtaining a database of 500 million accounts. That database included phone numbers of people that actively tried to keep that data personal. Two months later somebody dumped the database on a hacking forum, according to reports at the time.

We’re still unsure what’s happening at Facebook, and an outage of this severity and length is unprecedented in Facebook history. There could very well be a very interesting explanation for the outage, however we simply do not know enough to say what caused it yet. One thing we’ve learned, though, is that conspiracy theories can spread across the internet just fine without Facebook.

What was I trying to accomplish with my anonymous Tumblr?

If you were on Tumblr in the early 2010s, you may remember a blog called Your Fave Is Problematic. If not, its content should still sound familiar to you. The posts contained long lists of celebrities’ regrettable (racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, ethnophobic, ableist and so on) statements and actions — the stuff that gets people canceled these days.

That blog was my blog. I spent hours researching each post; as you can probably imagine, my search history was pretty ugly.

Your Fave Is Problematic had around 50,000 followers at its peak, in 2014, when I was a high school senior, but its influence was outsized. I got in a feud with a prominent young adult fiction author over his inclusion. One actor submitted himself, perhaps as a dare (or a plea) to dig up his worst. “Problematic fave” became a well-worn meme; even after I stopped posting, my blog was cited in books, articles, podcasts and think pieces. Through it all, my identity stayed private.

The blog started, as so many anonymous online projects do, as vengeful public shaming masquerading as social criticism. I was fine-tuning my moral compass and coming into my own as a feminist. So when I noticed classmates making sexist jokes on Facebook, including some about me, I started taking screenshots to post on a Tumblr called Calling Out Sexists. My policy was that I would take down a post only if its author publicly apologized.

A group of students brought the blog to the attention of our school’s administrators, who threatened to take legal action if I continued to write about them. Meanwhile, other Tumblr users had begun submitting screenshots featuring statements from minor celebrities. With graduation hanging in the balance, I shifted my focus away from my peers and toward public figures. I rebranded. Money and fame had protected them since time immemorial. What harm could my little blog do?

So I posted photos of Lady Gaga in V magazine with her skin bronzed to an unnatural brown. I pulled out troubling quotes from an essay Lena Dunham had written about a trip to Japan. I noted Taylor Swift’s since-changed homophobic lyric in “Picture to Burn.” My most popular posts tended to be about women — which makes sense, because the celebrity press tends to be more critical of them.

As it turned out, I had bigger things to worry about than dissecting the careers of celebrities I’d never met. On a winter morning, I woke up to the news that my older sister, Tamar, who was studying in Bolivia, had been in a bus crash, and the outlook was not good. I pored over research to escape from what felt like an impossible situation: my sister slowly dying of treatable injuries in a rural area thousands of miles away.

We held a public memorial service for Tamar in our hometown. Some of my classmates showed up, including a few who had written nasty things about me online. I found their shows of kindness insulting now, during what was quickly becoming the worst year of my life.

I tried going back to school after a few weeks, but I found myself picking frequent arguments with classmates and teachers. The school made an arrangement with my parents: I would be placed on “medical leave” for the remainder of the semester. I would graduate on time, but I wouldn’t return to campus.

Stuck at home, I devoted myself to Tumblr. What was I trying to accomplish? Mostly, I was interested in knocking people off their pedestals. I also enjoyed being popular, controversial, discussed. When a comedian I had posted about name-checked my blog on Twitter, I was giddy.

Then I started receiving threats. Someone sent me a screenshot of a house from Google Maps, claiming to have found my IP address. It wasn’t my house, but still. I realized that for every person on Tumblr who looked up to my blog, there were many more, online and offline, who hated it — and me. I started posting less and, eventually, stopped posting at all.

In the years since, I’ve looked back on my blog with shame and regret — about my pettiness, my motivating rage, my hard-and-fast assumptions that people were either good or bad. Who was I to lump together known misogynists with people who got tattoos in languages they didn’t speak? I just wanted to see someone face consequences; no one who’d hurt me ever had.

There’s something almost quaint about it all now: teenage me, teaching myself about social justice on Tumblr while also posturing as an authority on that very subject, thinking I was making a difference while engaging in a bit of schadenfreude. Meanwhile, other movements — local, global, unified in their purposes and rooted in progressive philosophies — were organizing for actual justice. Looking back, I was more of a cop than a social justice warrior, as people on Tumblr had come to think of me.

These days, there’s no shortage of online accountability efforts, the large part of them anonymously run. Some accounts post typically anodyne but occasionally explosive celebrity gossip. Others are explicitly aimed at naming, shaming and punishing people for all kinds of actions and missteps. My own work fell somewhere in the middle, I think; the information I posted was out in the open, but I was cataloging it to make a case against the veneration of the rich and famous.

As many have noted, the coronavirus pandemic has pronounced the distance between celebrities and the rest of us. And their actions have been subject to greater scrutiny — the vacations they’ve gone on, the parties they’ve held, the access they’ve had to testing and care during a health crisis that has taken millions of lives.

But celebrity culture began to crumble long before Covid-19. Mounting accusations of many kinds, whispered between industry professionals, had become too loud to ignore. Social media, which gave celebrities more control over their images and influence over their fans, also opened them up to new kinds of criticism. People have lost jobs and entire careers because of the kinds of errors my blog cited. Others have apologized for work and behavior that, re-examined in a contemporary context, just doesn’t hold up.

For years, I’ve regretted the spotlight I put on other people’s mistakes, as if one day I wouldn’t make plenty of my own. There can be an unsparing purity to growing into one’s social conscience that is often overbroad.

My brain wasn’t ready for nuance. I was angered by hypocrisy and cruelty; what I did about it was apply a level of scrutiny that left no room for error. I’m not saying that I should be canceled for my teenage blog. (Please don't!) I just know what we all should know by now: that no one who has lived publicly, online or off, has a spotless record.

For these reasons, I’ve thought about deleting my Tumblr. But doing that would mean erasing my own errors of judgment. I almost feel like I need to leave it up to punish myself for having made it in the first place. That, and I know someone could (and probably would) just pull it up on Wayback Machine. The internet, after all, never forgets.

PSA about HollywoodUndeadHQ

Alight I know I made a post about this before and here I am having to make another post about this since it was brought up yet again by another rpt and I am tired of people assuming what happened and speaking on my own behalf when they have no right doing so. The reviews I have found so far were posted on  @twiggyrpt and @p-parkersrph​ (they got one of the anons from the opposing group) 

- The ooc list doesnt show people's names because there is a discord server with everything you need (follow lists, events, activity checks, etc) because there are groups sending hate purposely just because they can and taking any chance they can to jump down hollywoodundead's throat because it gives them a thrill for some odd reason. I know with 100% it is a certain group that has been harassing Hollywoodundead and I have screenshot proof of it being them as well as IP tracking since they failed to realize I put that on my site the second I started getting those messages. As well as checking the anon tracking through my rph blog. 

- Also the comment about ‘more asian fcs’, and ‘more kpop bois’. is not me fetishizing asians. its me wanting to see more of my own race in the rp. I am asian so yes I want more asian representation. All the other rps I have been a part of never associated with my fc's because of them being asian whereas the second I joined HollywoodUndeadHQ they had accepted me with open arms and didn't let the race of my character get in the way of plots or interactions. Whether it be more kpop bois (which might i mind you i do have one as a fc in that group and would love to see more representation around since I don't see them basically anywhere so asking to see more isn't a bad thing) or more asian fcs the moral of the story is I want to see more representation and encourage that representation. 

-Now to address the stupid bs about the whole changing bae suzy to nina dobrev. I was the one who changed the character. As someone who is Asian American, I wrote the bio without any race in mind and then I played with the idea of making them asian fc for some more representation but the more I played with that fc I realized that it didn't seem to fit well. I was already going back and forth between suzy and nina originally and I thought that nina better fit the anne character. And I would use suzy for another character in the future that I am currently in the works of trying to put together. 

- If you need screenshot proof of me going back and forth between suzy and nina BEFORE the character was even posted I can give you screenshots proving this was not whitewashing or whatever they claim it to be. When I originally wrote the bio I specifically made it vague in case I did decide to go with using Suzy for another character and used my second choice nina as the new fc of said character. I wanted it to be nina originally but I also wanted to give my asian fc a chance instead but in the end it just didn’t fit like I originally wanted it to. So I will be using suzy as a fc for another character. It's simple as that. I just wanted to straighten that out so that the group that purposely was jumping down my throat about the decision I made behind the scenes stops trying to condemn the group for a decision that I had made on my own. I am not going to sit by and watch people send hate to a group that has been nothing but warm and welcoming to me ever since I joined. 

- I was also thinking about changing one of my characters who is currently white to being a poc I am just looking for the right fc for them currently.

THE ROAD SO FAR

The EIGHT-Thirty Appointment

Following the events of Shepherd's surrender to authorities, the members of Task Force 141 who went rogue in pursuit of him had been exonerated from treason. This meant that from then on, life would be a little more 'normal'. No more hiding in public, no more lack of equipment, no more secret hiding areas.

This prompted Laswell to recreate the task force she once poured her heart on, with a few changes to its jurisdiction. With Ghost, Roach and Alexandra still recovering, the remaining members were invited to celebrate their success.

"So John, now that 141 is back your main focus will be Nero. Do you want the reassigned members back?" Laswell asked Price while they exited the building. Soap overheard this because he thought he was the John being called.

"If it's still okay and not much of a hassle, then yes." Price replied.

"What about Kyle?" Laswell added.

"No. Not yet. Just keep an eye on him." Price mused and turned to Soap, who quickly turned to focus back on Alex as he pushed his wheelchair.

"Excuse me, Captain Price. Can we talk for a moment?" Samantha interrupted as they stopped on their tracks. Alex turned out of curiosity, wondering what matter they were discussing.

"Hey hey hey. What was that about?" Alex asked Soap and France, who continued walking. Laswell turned to the next right as she already finished her conversation with Price, waving at Alex and the rest of the 141.

Soap chuckled at the CIA. This was about Samantha's surprise for him and he shouldn't spoil it.

"Well, with 141 back maybe she just wanted to know where she will be now. Nero no longer needs the IP Address and she's been through a lot." France reasoned, making Alex frown.

"You know… I want her safe and all but I also want her within my reach. I've lost her far too many times already. I'm not going to lose her again." Alex grumbled making Soap and France look at each other, their faces were worried at their sorry excuse.

"I think Samantha feels the same way too. Maybe she's bargaining for staying at 141." Soap lied, making France question him quietly.

"You know what, Alex? Don't overthink this." Soap tapped his shoulders reassuringly.

"Overthink what?" Samantha inserted. They fell quiet and Samantha slowly asked Soap to let her push Alex as they moved forward, Samantha being excited of what's next.

"Well, we did a great job. I guess." Soap quietly commented sarcastically, earning a soft elbow from France.

"Ow!" he exaggerated and turned to France, his face looked bewildered.

"Way to go, John." She sneered and followed the two on their way to their appointment, riding Soap's trusty jeep.

The drive to the surprise area consisted of mostly Soap and Francine acting like couples while they drove. Soap could see the two murmuring at each other whenever Soap would argue with France on whatever's going on in the road.

"I always wanted to try out some London restaurants." she mused, looking at the place they just passed by.

"Yeah? I could see you as the fancy kind." he chuckled at his guess.

"What does that mean?" France gave him a suspicious glare. Soap looked at her, feigning surrender.

"I just said it as is. You're the kind of person who would want fancy stuff." He explained, focusing back on the road.

"I-"

"Come on. You don't have to read everything I say between the lines. Sometimes, I'm just a simple man" he whined and Alex and Samantha burst out laughing, causing the two to be quiet.

"Are you sure there's nothing going on with you two?" Samantha asked, making the silence a little bit more awkward.

Soap carefully rolled his eyes toward Francine, who was actually looking down and blushing. He really had no definitive stance on whatever's going on between them, and if you ask him, he'd love to assume that they're already together. But he remembered that he told her that he'll be patient, and that's the only thing that's hindering him from taking her to the next level.

"Well…" Francine croaked, her voice was shaky and Soap was actually worried that she was already under pressure.

"We're here." Soap interrupted, wishing he did the right thing. Alex quickly looked outside to see where they actually were.

"What is this place, Soap? Where did you bring us?" Alex asked and Soap just nodded.

"I'll let your girl fill in everything for you. This was her idea after all and we're here to help her out." Soap replied as he assisted him to his wheelchair and watched the two enter the establishment.

He then knocked on Samantha's door as she was still out of focus.

"There's a coffee shop across the street, we could wait there until they finish." He invited her for another coffee date. Hopefully this time, there would be no more emp phone wielding persons to interrupt it.

"About Samantha's question…" She muttered.

"Don't pressure yourself about it. You actually owe me for saving you, by the way." He chuckled, already opening her door.

France slowly stepped down the vehicle and turned to Soap, her head looked up to his face.

"Look John. There's no other reason I can think of that would make you wait anymore. I really enjoy your company, your personality, and I'm curious about everything else about you. So, if you've been waiting all this time ever since that night, my answer is that I'm ready." She smiled, and John's eyes widened at the sight of her. The message made him hug her tight, lift her up and spin her around briefly while she giggled at the feeling.

"Wow. You don't know how much you made my day, France!" he sighed as he slowly set her down and closed the door and made their way to the coffee shop.

"I missed these so much!" France happily chewed on a slice of blueberry cheesecake, with a few crumbs stuck on the edge of her mouth. Soap smiled as she watched her enjoy the simple things in life, a thing he was always looking for in women.

Most of his dating life were his parents setting him up on business dates and most women there were far too serious. They looked like they haven't enjoyed anything in years. Some of them admittedly loved to have fun, but their idea of fun was far too complicated. Like expensive travels and luxurious shopping sprees, none of them piqued Soap's interest.

However, Francine was the first one who begged to differ. It's like every great idea in John's activity book is enjoyable for her. Simple things such as Netflix, Cinemas and even this coffee shop date, made her smile.

"What's funny?" Francine asked as she noticed the odd smile on his face.

"Oh nothing… you just looked cute eating that whole thing. It makes me want to buy a whole cake and watch you smile and eat that all day." he mused, imagining how things would've been if they weren't in public. He could've been tasting that cake from her mouth already.

He quickly grabbed a tissue and wiped off the crumbs as Francine blushed in embarrassment.

"I'm sorry. I didn't notice it was there." she blushed shyly and looked down.

"Nah… why apologize. I was thinking you were hinting at me to kiss you. Like what most movies and cliché shows would mean." He scoffed and sipped on his coffee.

"Ha ha. Well you could try. As if I'd let you." She smiled bravely, but Soap could see her weakness behind that smile. She's raising her guard up again, and it's always like that when people are around.

"Wow. Umm that went differently." Soap commented, attempting to let France open up. This has been a common trend with her lately, toughening up when people are around but when they're alone, she's still strict but less tense.

"I'm sorry. It's just-" She hesitated and turned to the window.

"Say, how long would it take for them to finish?" She asked. Soap also turned to the building and shrugged.

"I don't know. Honestly, I'm excited for him. They make the best prosthetics around here and it'd make Alex's life easier. It'll look and weigh and bend like an actual leg." he said proudly as he turned to France who was looking at him weirdly.

"What?" he asked as he checked his phone which just beeped.

"Actually, they're almost done. And they're asking for an order. I'll just go get some for them, you stay here." He added, holding the thought, wiping his face and proceeded to the counter.

The reformed Task Force 141 would soon be back in business as papers were already approved by the board. They'll be situating themselves on American soil as their previous base was compromised by the traitorous General.

As for their last day on English soil, the rest of the team stayed in a penthouse condominium unit owned by the MacTavishes.

"Wow. This is top class!" Samantha mused as Alex plopped himself on the couch, his new leg quickly rested on the table. He's been in it for only a few hours but he already got the hang of it.

Samantha shot a glare at Alex's actions to which he shrugged on, prompting Soap to reply.

"Don't worry Samantha, make yourselves at home. We don't use this place anyway so help yourselves out. I promise it'll be fine." he eased as Samantha slowly plopped down beside him as Alex's arm rested on her shoulders. Soap actually wondered if he could do that to her too, get comfortable, open up, just normal stuff.

"I'll go get tea." he quickly said to himself as his imagination got the best of him as he walked to the kitchen. France quickly followed him to help out.

"Fancy place you got here, John. I wonder how many girls you've brought in here." She mused standing in front of him, helping with the teacups. Soap eyed her for a second and replied.

"Honestly, I can't count. I used to stay here when I studied and that was years ago." he replied as seriously as possible, looking at the changes on her face. She's actually jealous.

"Yeah. Figures. I saw your photos from earlier years. It was no doubt you'd have a lot of women over." She chuckled, nervously at it. Soap saw through her as she started to get curious about his life. A sign that she's ready to stop lowering her guard. Soap on the other hand, wanted her to feel special. Asking her out as soon as possible would make him come out as a desperate one, so he planned to do it the long traditional way. Which he actually despised, he would want to hug her so tight right now and it was already killing him.

"What about you? How many different rooms did you wake up to already?" he asked, changing the subject as she was already starting to feel bad about her question.

"Me?! Only a few. And most of them were owned by you. I've been very serious about my life choices that I never let myself loose." she sighed as Soap raised an eyebrow.

"Let loose? Like going out to parties?" He added.

"Yes. But broader. Like letting myself loose. I've always followed the path I wanted to be in, not letting any distractions bother me." she explained, blushing at it like it's a secret she was too shy to tell. Soap on the other hand, didn't quite get it.

"So you mean…" He tilted his head.

"Yes. Since birth, I never had a boyfriend." she looked down in embarrassment for the second time today.

Soap gulped. He didn't actually know how to respond to her statement. Sure he wanted to be the first one, but now wasn't the time. It would feel forced. And he wasn't a fan of forced relationships.

The kettle whistled and the two of them quickly responded to it as they both reached out for it, their hands met just by the handle.

"I'll take care of this one." She said as Soap slowly let go of her soft hands and watched her pour it on, carrying it to Samantha and Alex who were already giggling through a romcom.

"Way to go, John." he muttered to himself with a sigh as he ran his hand on his hair.

The day actually felt worse as France continued to remain quiet towards Soap as she invested herself on the television, third wheeling on Alex and Samantha.

Soap pondered about the words he chose to say to her and those he didn't over a steamy shower.

With the place having only two bedrooms, it was inevitable that France would sleep beside him but he also considered sleeping on the couch to respect her privacy or something like that.

As soon as he exited the bathroom, he saw France already tucked on her side of the bed, scrolling through her phone.

"Hey there." he muttered as she rolled her eyes to him and back to her phone.

"Hey." she said nonchalantly, her eyes dead focused on her screen. Soap quickly grabbed his nighttime clothes and slipped them on.

"Are you in any way excited for tomorrow?" he asked, trying to keep her from interacting with him.

"Yeah. A little." she said as she turned to him and smiled.

"Listen, about earlier today, in the kitchen..." he said.

"I'm not mad, John. I just wanted to say it out there so you could understand me."

"Tell me what you feel."

"Embarrassed."

"Why?"

"Because I looked like a fool earlier. When I told you I was ready and now I feel that you're the one who isn't. You told me you would wait but-" Soap placed his hand on her face, gently touching her cheek.

"France. You don't have to worry. You're still the one I'm thinking about every second. I just… wanted to do this the slow and steady way, where I would show off how worthy I am for you. I want you to enjoy the whole John MacTavish Experience." he smiled and she slowly turned her frown upside down.

Soap wanted to take a picture of that smile and plaster it all around the room as his heart started to pound like crazy, his face unknowingly moving closer to hers. They both started to close their eyes as they let their lips do the talking, but in a quiet and intimate way. Soap felt France's greed for his kiss as she slowly learned how to beg for more of him. It was true that she had no experience on these things but something told him that she's starting to learn some tricks herself.

Soap didn't hesitate to retaliate as she released a soft groan, a sign of her being content as her hands slowly grazed his arms, her thumb softly pressed his biceps, digging deeper as their tongues clashed. After a few more seconds, they both broke their kiss as they gasped for air.

"Yeah. Go sleep on the floor before we do something stupid." She giggled and Soap nodded in agreement as they quickly shuffled about, set their beds and called it a night.
