Okay I think I've got it!

Artorias is referred to as 'master of the wolf blood', and it is said that collective soul of the Abyss Watchers is one with the 'wolf blood master', so, Artorias'! And the way Abyss Watchers had the wolf blood was through that big old wolf:

So, somehow partially Artorias is still present in spirit, but through blood! I think the implication here is that he shared blood with Sif, so they effectively became extension of each other; maybe it was the reason she (???) became so big and could even master sword art? At the same time, maybe Sif had the capacity of traversing the Abyss as a beast? Lore says Artorias got that ability thanks to beasts from Abyss, but he had to start somewhere, and maybe wolves could do that?

But Sif had pups that we never knew of, and this wolf is one of them! Soul and blood in Dark Souls interchange, so although Artorias died, his blood didn't and passed onto descendants of Sif who had it in her veins now!
