ok pause. i just thought about wolfwood's death scenes in both trimax and 98 and i'm crying. what the fuck do you mean he just found a will to keep on living after so long of being willing to die for any bullshit reason and he died anyway. what do you mean trimax ww died next to the man who taught him how to live and love again and vash buried him alone. what do you mean 98 ww died wanting to spend his days with vash ans the girls and vash carried ww's gun around after that and used it in the final fight. what the fuck do you mean. that's the saddest shit i ever heard get said in my life

So I always just kinda went with this scene, knowing that there was time spent traveling that we haven't seen (Orange give us filler OVAs I am begging), and thinking it was friendly banter. But I saw someone point at Vash's reply as being a little odd, and. Yeah.
He seems sad. We know it's partly about Rollo, but we've also seen his self-induced hunger strike. We've seen him refusing to let himself cry because he doesn't think he deserves it. Hell, I'm pretty sure half the time he's only pretending to sleep in the back of the car.
Vash laughs it off, but I don't think he really disagrees with Wolfwood, either.

I know it's been a little while since the Trigun Stampede hype has ended but, I can't get this main criticism out of my head after reading the manga--- I wish that they had made hints about Vash's willpower to restrain his anger.
In Stampede, he has the meek pacifist down, but he is mostly led by guilt. He doesn't hurt people because he thinks the planets' issues are all his fault and wants some form of punishment. In a way, it's self-inflicted flogging, which is what Knives says in the last few episodes of season 1.
In Maximum, he has guilt, but he also has a temper and often says that he does have thoughts of wanting to kill his enemies. But every single time, he still doesn't kill the object of his anger.
I think Maximums version of Vash pacifism is so much more meaningful. It's not self pity, it pure determination.
In Max, he actually feels like something that isn't human, and he is so scary if you really think about it from the normal human perspective. He is an other worldly angel/eldritch creature and he WILLINGLY chooses not to hurt people---when he has good reason too--- and instead offers kindness and second chances.
Since Stampde is supposed to be following Maximum closer than the 98 anime, I was hoping that they would still show that side of him. Who knows, maybe they will touch on it in the second season.

Trimax vol2's emotionally damaging parallels
Right off the bat this vol pulls no punches swerving into darker seinen territory, but the framing of these scenes in particular probably hit me the hardest.
Wolfwood's dreams vs Vash's reality on returning 'home' to greet the kids...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Where Wolfwood dreams believing his hands are far too stained with blood to have the right to hold the kids from his orphanage anymore.....to watching Vash return home only to have that right to hold forcibly taken from him. (What a nightmare...) As the lives of all those innocent people and children Vash cares for literally slip and crumble through his fingers. Shattering...
You can take this moment even further by comparing it to the vol's disturbing opening scene of Legato contorting countless live men into meat puppets against their will to kill them...vs Leonof's method of dissecting (killing) his live subjects to transform them into literal puppets. Oh yeah, it's that fucked up. That Wolfwood immediately opens fire on the puppetmaster, appalled that his way to emotionally torture Vash, by turning his home family's innocent lives into literal (weaponized) playthings, is this foul.
Tumblr media
I'm glad Wolfwood took a stand here when it crossed a personal line (involving kids) he could not tolerate! But Vash's reaction? ohohoho.......
Because remember when Wolfwood confronted Vash earlier this vol, accusing him that he's a coward who refuses to kill anyone because he doesn't want to get his hands dirty? But Vash completely turns it around, saying he's the coward who gives up hope so easily, that he sees 'a (pained) man who forces himself to play the devil while his heart cries out.'
Tumblr media
Now what does Wolfwood see in Vash once his broken heart cries out blood...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He's confronted with the fearsome gravity and magnitude of a non-human who forces himself to contain the devil while he cries out in pain!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now how can just a human like Wolfwood, who only plays the devil to pragmatically kill, contend with that? (Oh what a crisis...) With the level of oppressive death and inhuman power this [monster] normally suppresses (for telling reasons!) it's almost a miracle Vash mercifully chooses not to kill while playing the pacifist who protects and strives for humanity's hope instead.
