Nothing has made me happier than venturing from one fandom to the next and finding you there as well, because I know I am going to get to experience your heart and skill as a writer for these new characters. Regardless of what characters they are, you manage to capture them perfectly on the page so that I may as well be watching the source material. Your fics have a warmth about them, and settling in to read one gives me the same contentment as sitting on a hearth with a fire at my back, or on a picnic blanket basking in the sun. The one thing I did notice is now all landscape texture normal maps, have alpha specular layers. If you stare are grounds like me, find a landscape texture pack pronto. Again, 'upscaling' has occurred from 512x512 or lower. Landscape textues are all 1k, but not really. With the exception to the few textures I pointed out. Maybe when the mods get into full swing we will be able to go beyond what was the original game capabilities, especially for those that use graphics card > 4gb as I believe this is a 64bit game so there shouldn't be the crappy issue with the current Skyrim and memory for Windows 10 so there is that. It isn't any better than what we could do ourselves and actually have done ourselves. Just another reason for not trusting them to give a great product. What is it with Bethesda and their filters? Like looking through a jar of piss playing the game. Upgrade the graphics, textures and meshes but put a yellow haze one it. Many of the scenes look like you are looking through a yellow filter/haze. They would be the default for tetrachromatic shinobi.Case in point that they don't understand what it is we do.

If Ignis were a YouTuber, I could see him doing cooking episodes where, of course, he teaches you how to make a five-star meal. Gives tips and tricks on everything from oil to temperature to handling the knife to what shape to cut a strawberry for a presentation.

And sometimes he tries to replicate food wars recipes or other dishes from pop culture.

But what's important is that he makes it as close to the original concept as possible, and then afterwards does his own take on it. Shows how he would make it.

The background music would be classy soft violin. Less Vivaldi's four seasons, more Brandenburg Concerto No 3.

Other videos are inspired by conversations with Prompto in particular. Ignis has an entire series dedicated to things that Prompto has been confused by, complained about, and showed a lack of proficiency in. This includes table setting (nine different utensils and three different glasses, at least), how to tie a necktie (30 styles + tips on formal wear co-ordination), and the basic steps of five different ballroom dances.

It would be very cute to have a Choco Bros YouTuber AU where the four of them all know each other and have separate channels with wildly different topics. And then they do crossover episodes. You get all the shenanigans.

Iggy invites Noct over for a cooking episode. Noctis seems very resistant. He takes the bed of lettuce off his plate when he thinks Ignis isn't looking. Ignis' motherly look of disappointment becomes a meme.

Gladio might do fitness and bodybuilding videos, or!

Basic training techniques with medieval weapons.

We know he's a literary fanatic, so maybe it shows in how he names things, his steel blades and practice swords.

Now the image I have is that the four of them mostly have their own channels and don't cross over too often. However, I could see a filmed sparring match between gladio and ignis.

Noct is dragged into the self-defense videos. He is used as an example of how not to do things. Gladio corrects his form for the camera. Noct looks pissy.

Prompto could have all kinds of things on his channel. A vlog maybe, some lovely nature hikes where he was going to take some beautiful expert shots anyway, might as well videotape himself dying as he hikes up hill.

Definitely a vlog. One of his most popular videos is of him going to a chocobo farm and getting very excited.

And Noct. In one version he might have a YouTube channel, but it would be very funny if he didn't. He doesn't have a YouTube channel. He's just dragged into everything by his friends.

He's that cryptid in the background. He'll conk out in the background, asleep in a chair, slightly off camera as gladio and Nyx discuss armor and hold up different pieces for the camera.

In one of igneous cooking videos, his elbow and me can be spotted through the entryway of the kitchen into an immaculate dining room. When igneous sets his perfectly plated creation on the dining room table, staged with the proper table settings, Noct's hair and folded arms poke in from the top of the frame. Ignis just set up around him.

There's only one video where anyone has seen this mysterious emo cryptid happy, and that is in the Prompto videos.

It was really know who this guy is, and if you only know their channels in passing, and don't know about the crossover episodes, you would have no idea that these three people even know each other, much less are childhood friends.

And people are like, so what is the guy in the background do? What's his deal? Who is he?

And I don't know where to go with this from here, but in my head it's really cute.

Update 8-5-21:

Why did I say that Gladio would only tie in literary analysis to the names of weapons? I was a fool. A complete and utter fool.

Gladio compares book styles of the same Legends told by different authors. He talks about translators, and through the process of reading all these different translations of ancient poetry, he discovered that there is an incredible bias amongst translators that misrepresents the original source material. You know, like in real life.

He does videos on historical accuracy of costumes, fighting styles, the works. But he also points out when the TV show or movie got little details right, little cultural things that no one would know about unless they knew. Something like... Having the seidr sort next to the jarl at the head of the table, because she is feared and disgraced and respected highly all at the same time. Or something, history nerds, throw us examples.

He cares about when cross lacing became a thing with corsets. He's pleased when he sees spiral corseting, it shows that they did at least some research.

If Cindy is a part of this, I want her to be a guest on the shows. But especially gladio, because I want them to collaborate on metalsmithing. Together, they forge Noctis' engine blade. It's a birthday gift. He loves it. The last 30 seconds of the video is a fast short clip compilation of everyone taking swings at different things in the backyard with the sword.

The engine piece doesn't do anything, it just makes the vroom vroom sound, which makes everyone's day.

Prompto definitely has some sort of travel vlog, something he saves up for and takes time off of his side gig to do.

The viewers don't know this, not explicitly, but Noct shamelessly pushes to foot the bill so that prompto can come with him to boring places he doesn't want to go. Like venice, italy.

See, Noct either doesn't want to be too much on screen or recognizable, or his father has a huge problem with it. Because his son is going to inherit a multi-million dollar company, and should anything scandalous happen on those videos, the whole world is going to know and he's just going to be a hard time for everyone. His life could be over before it's even started. How is Regis supposed to pass this down if everyone believes his son is incompetent?

Noct doesn't care, of course. He doesn't even want to be a part of the company. It's so stressful, just like being a prince in canon.

This means, of course, that he gets dragged all over the world to important events and meetings with his dad. Not often, but it's becoming more often the older he gets. And Noct hates it. So having Prompto along to goof off with is an ulterior motive.

He is edited out of every scene to the best of everyone's power. However, sometimes his voice does catch on screen. And if he's not easily recognizable, a blurry thing that's not even halfway into the frame, Noct will just shrug and call it good enough.

Also, those crossovers? Those seem almost for business. They do it for hype it seems. Oh it's so exciting, ignis is going to show prompto how to cook! And the two different videos on each channel show a different side of the experience. There's the crossing over points, like when they're in the kitchen and igneous hands prompto and onion and a knife and shows him the correct way to hold it, but then there's a whole bunch of other stuff that you get from prompto's vlog.

He records his entire experience. It's just as enthusiastic and fun as his videos always are, the same flavor and delivery, but it's in Ignis' apartment, and it's exciting. Prompto is very personal in his videos, so every single time he doesn't understand something, he puts in those narrative one-on-one moments, like in the office or in a reality TV show.

The video from ignis' perspective has an entire section of him explaining how the dish is made, a little bit of History on the meat and spices, the ingredients, and a breakdown of the steps of how to make it before anything happens with prompto.

And then you get the delight of Ignus trying to teach pronto how to cook. And it's a very wholesome video. Prompto probably messes up several times, but Ignis is infinitely patient. There are definitely puns. All sorts of puns.

All the crossovers have puns.

So, it's a big shock to learn that these three seemingly unrelated YouTubers are actually childhood friends. And it's the second biggest shock.

The biggest shock is that that weird sleepy emo cryptid, whom you only get blurry out of focus shots and barely there snippets of cut out conversation, is this high profile Rich boy who's going to inherit the titan company, an equivalent of Stark industries.

The shooting star that careers through the night sky and crashes, quite spectacularly, into the muddy lake is not, in fact, a shooting star. The man that pushes open the emergency hatch and hauls himself, gasping and wheezing, onto the ruptured ship is not, in fact, a man. And the emergency response comm he aims at the stars and swears at in a harsh and alien language is not, in fact, working.

Graves would like very much to know which utter dipshit in Transfers had managed to screw up his warp jump quite this badly and whether Graves was allowed to throw them out of an airlock when he got back.

Then the heavens open and Graves discovers that the delightful little planet in the middle of delightful fucking nowhere has a working water cycle, one that brings with it a great deal of cold, a side helping of misery, and a whopping dollop of wet.

Oh, and apparently when he crashed he broke several ribs, fried the electrical connections to his left knee, and rolled in a pile of broken glass. Grand.

He retreats into his broken spaceship and cannibalises a control panel to fix his knee. It… mostly works. That done, he digs through enough old textbooks to identify where he is (backwater, uncivilised, and uncontacted - glorious), what language he needs to program into the translator (there are a ridiculous number to choose from, more than any one planet should reasonably need; he goes for the first seven in the list and hopes that’s enough) and what basic field-notes he needs to add to his mental database (far too many, most of them gathered from a distance, at least half of them marked with question marks and sounding blatantly ridiculous). And, because he’s currently hurting and light-headed, he says screw it to health and safety and just uploads the whole lot at once. The resulting headache has him staggering into the wall, missing the wall and tumbling through the breach in the hull, flailing and half drowning his way through the lake, and fetching up somewhere on the bank. And he’s still getting rained on.

“Fuck this planet,” he coughs through a mouthful of lake-water, and faints.

He manages, somehow, to survive undrowned until morning and it’s Newt that finds him, sprawled unconscious in the mud. Well, Niffler that finds him, Newt that scrambles after Niffler and almost trips over him in the process, but that’s just semantics, really. Newt’s the one that asks, hesitantly, if he’s alive; when he doesn’t get a response, Newt’s the one that manhandles him into the case and cleans his wounds as best he can.

When Graves rejoins the land of the living, Newt’s the one who stutters to a halt, blushes lithium red, and throws a sheet his way while backtracking pronto out of the room.

“I’ll get clothes!” he squeaks from halfway up the suitcase ladder. “There’s food in the kitchen, see you soon, don’t let Niffler out thank you bye!”

Graves blinks. “Illgetclothes,” he repeats. “Thankyoubye.” Then, switching back to a more familiar language, “Identify and translate. Please.”

Whirr. Beep. Whirr whirr. Ding! English, the text across his vision reads. Activate real time translate Y/N

Feck it. The headache can’t get worse. “Activate,” he agrees. “Yes, that means yes. Yes. Activate - Y. I want the Y option.”

Activating real time translate. Target language: English. Please note minor vocal edits required for accurate pronunciation.

“Minor vocal what now - glerk.” Graves lifts a hand to his throat, frowning the disturbed and confused frown of someone who’s just had their voice box rearranged without sufficient warning. And, from the feel of it, the back of his throat as well. Maybe? He opens and closes his mouth a few times to get used to the new sensations. “That will never not be weird,” he mutters to himself. It comes out in English and translates itself back into real words by the time his ears pass it back to his brain and the double-overlap does exactly squat for his headache.

Graves predicts direly that he’s going to hate this planet and distracts himself by turning his attention to what’s around him.

The room is soft, muted colours with strongly yellow-orange tinted lighting. The basic set-up is surprisingly familiar - he doesn’t need the fieldnotes ticking over in the back of his mind to identify that he’s on a bed, or that the primary building material is some kind of local plant matter. The assorted objects strewn around the room are less familiar and Graves takes a minute to run through the new words that flash up for each one (chair is obvious, but what’s book or slippers and why does the door have handle is that the keypad? There’s no control panel on it, and this place really doesn’t look advanced enough for motion sensing so what?)

Bored with the room, he turns back to himself. He’s wearing a clean bandage, wrapped tight around his chest, and part of him wants to unravel it to see how his back is doing underneath. It hadn’t seemed so bad, but he had passed out so there was a potential that one of his internal systems was wonky; based on what he’d seen so far of the planet it was doubtful the Earth-inhabitant who found him had known how to fix them. On the other hand, he feels surprisingly fine for a ship-wreck survivor.

He rests a hand on the neatly tucked end of the dressing for a long moment before shaking his head. “Food,” he says instead. “Food, kitchen, no niffler.” They seem simple enough instructions to follow.

Error, the translator warns. No entry for “Niffler”. Update dictionary when possible.

Error, the fieldnotes warn. Nudity detected. Local customs require nudity to be dealt with before proceeding.

Graves groans.

It takes some trial and error to work out what, exactly, the nudity problem entails, but he finally narrows it down to his lower back and the tops of his legs. That sorted, he winds the sheet round his waist and shuffles his way out of the bedroom into what is either a kitchen or a health hazard, or quite possibly both. The field notes haven’t yet given him the intricate understanding of Earth culture he needs to tell the difference, but there’s something about the haphazard way pans and bottles and jars are stacked on the shelves that seems a bit unstable to him. He proceeds with caution.

After about five minutes of careful study he slumps down on a stool and confesses to himself that he has no idea what he’s looking for. The small four-legged creature that had followed him around the kitchen hauls herself onto the table and tips her head with a curious chirp, and Graves decides, somewhat desperately, that she looks like she might know.

“What,” he asks her, “What, precisely, is food?”

She chirps. It’s not English. Life wouldn’t be that simple.

“Identify,” Graves says tiredly. “Translate. Please.”

Language not supported. Download new language Y/N

“Screw it, why not.”

Four and a half minutes later, with a headache to rival a nova-shot hangover, Graves repeats his question.

Lots of things, the creature answers with a series of drawn out squeaks. Things that smell nice. Things that look nice. Things you want to eat.

Ah. Fuel. Graves reaches for the nearest bottle of thing that smells nice. He thinks. He doesn’t have much to compare it to, not of Earth smells, and it’s very different from anything he’s familiar with. It looks nice, that at least he’s more certain on, but wanting to eat is a stage he and the unfamiliar food-fuel haven’t yet reached in their relationship.

“Is this food?” he asks.

The creature wrinkles her nose. Not for me, she says, and Graves nearly puts it back - but Mummy eats strange things. It could be food.

Mummy, Graves assumes, is the blushing human. He squints at the bottle. It’s labelled, and it takes a second for the unfamiliar script to resolve itself into something Graves can read. Lavender, it says, which the fieldnotes classify as colour and plant. Graves squints further. How can a colour be bottled. Electromagnetic radiation doesn’t listen to cork stoppers. Are the fieldnotes sure about this.

Plant, the fieldnotes insist petulantly, and Graves allows that ‘colour’ may be a translation error - he’s stuffed a lot of data into his brain in the last eighteen hours, he can’t expect it all to go right. Plants, though. Plants are carbon. Carbon is a (primitive, but workable) energy source. Plants are probably food.

“Bottoms up,” he mumbles, and removes the stopper.

Lavender, he decides, is a bit dry, a bit difficult to swallow - and yes, he can now confirm that his throat has definitely been modified to speak English, he’s only glad it didn’t need further modification to speak the small creature’s squeaking language as well - but other than that, perfectly good enough. He toasts the creature with his bottle, and she makes a hopeful gesture at the door and asks if Graves is going out.

“Ah,” Graves guesses. “Niffler. Mummy said not to let you out.”

Mummy’s a killjoy, Niffler grumbles, and crawls her way into Graves lap to curl up and sulk. Graves shrugs; Mummy has also taken him in and, from the feel of his back, poured far too much time and effort into healing him. Even his hastily-repaired knee feels better. He’s happy enough to keep Niffler in the kitchen if that’s all Mummy asks in payment.

He’s two thirds of the way through the lavender by the time Newt returns.

“Hello?” Newt calls from somewhere down a corridor. “Are you in the - oh, hello, potions lab. That’s. That’s fine. Hello.”

Graves smiles. It feels awkward. Are smiles always awkward? Maybe he’ll ask Niffler later. “I found food,” he says, holding up the mostly empty bottle of dried lavender.

Newt manfully holds his tongue about potions ingredients and food and not really quite the same. “I found clothes,” he replies, holding out the bundle. Graves puts the lavender aside and stands up to take them, toppling Niffler to the floor as he does so.

Naturally, she digs in her claws and takes the sheet with her.

Newt eeps, bright red again as he all but throws the clothes at Graves. “Wasn’t sure about your size, hope you like them, do you want tea I’ll put the kettle on kitchen down the hall,” he babbles, and flees.

Graves stares at the empty doorway, completely bemused. “Mummy is odd,” he tells Niffler.

Well obviously, she grumps, wriggling backwards out of the sheet. He’s Mummy. It’s what he does.

Graves absorbs the new information while he struggles his way into the clothes. Unlike the sheet, they don’t seem willing to stay if he wraps them round, and there seem to be too many of them for the number of limbs he has. What, he wants to know, is wrong with skin-tight nano suits. Who thought clothes were a better idea and are they still alive for Graves to explain why exactly they’re not. “Fieldnotes,” he finally says. “Help?”

The fieldnotes give him a barrage of images. The translator helpfully annotates each one; petticoat, gauntlet, jumpsuit, scuba tank.

“Ok. Niffler. Clothes go how?”

She grumbles something about clothes being ridiculous (Graves privately agrees) but manages to talk him through the way Mummy wears clothes until they make some vague amount of sense.

Buttons, on the other hand, do not. Graves admits defeat and gives up. The trousers probably are the right size but without the buttons done up they hang low and almost falling off his hips; as for the shirt, Graves is lucky to have worked out the arm holes but he leaves the front open over his bandaged chest.

The belt, he abandons. No clue. Some sort of restraint, a collar of some kind? The fieldnotes suggest using it to tie his hands to a bedpost which seems highly counterproductive. He’ll ask later.

Niffler paws imperiously at his bare foot until he bends down and lets her climb to his shoulder. Get me a sugar cube, she demands. Mummy puts them in tea. I want one.

“More food?” Graves asks. Sugarcane the translator tells him is another plant, as is sugar beet but there doesn’t seem to be an entry for sugar cube.

You won’t like them, Niffler hurries to tell him. Kitchen is through that door.

Graves hums and follows. He suspects he may have to try a sugar cube for himself before he decides if he’ll like it or not.

“Hello Mummy,” he says politely as he comes into the kitchen.

Newt spins round with wide eyes, takes in Graves’ rather lax approach to getting dressed, and brandishes a teapot in distress.

Graves pauses and frowns, confused. He has clothes. He’s found the kitchen (it’s not much less of a hazard than the potions lab). He’s not yet let Niffler escape. He’s not sure what’s wrong, but Newt is bright red again, and all but hyperventilates as Graves steps nearer to cage him against the counter.

Error, the fieldnotes protest. Data suggests current breathing method is inefficient. Lack of oxygen fatal to earth residents.

“What are you doing,” Newt asks in a rushed, high pitched breath.

Graves presses their foreheads together. Newt’s skin feels hot against his, even moreso than their different biology can account for. Fever, the translator supplies worriedly. Sign of sickness and ill health. Then the fieldnotes chime in with increasing panic: Error: sickness leads to death. Reduce fever where possible.

“I’m helping,” Graves says out loud to all three of them, and modulates his skin temperature to be cool and soothing. It costs more energy than he’d hoped and it’s unnerving to see the proof of how weak he is, but when he leans back Newt’s sudden fever is gone.

He’s still flushed, and now his pupils are wide and his breathing has stopped altogether. The fieldnotes begin to bleep in distress but the translator shushes them. Earth phrase identified: take my breath away, it says soothingly, to which the fieldnotes start shrilling about giving it back. Graves deems him probably not in danger anymore and nods in satisfaction as he steps away.

“Better?” he asks.

“Newt,” Newt blurts (semi-aquatic, pond dwelling, small creature similar in size to a finger), which is an odd thing to answer with, but then he goes on to clarify, “My name is Newt.”

He lies, Niffler says. His name is Mummy. Don’t believe him.

Newt seems a lot larger than a finger, but he was near a lake when he found Graves so Graves elects to ignore Niffler in this. “My name is unpronounceable on your planet and may vibrate your vocal chords to shreds if you tried,” he says to Newt. “But I don’t mind if you call me Graves.”

Newt stares for a long moment. “Ok,” he finally says. “Graves. Ok. Vibrate my - ok, that’s. Ok.”

Graves smiles, and, potentially, it’s less awkward than before. Maybe. Graves is working on it.

Niffler pokes him in the ear and comes dangerously close to short circuiting his auditory processors. Sugar cubes, she reminds him.

Graves scans the table for something Mummy puts in tea and solemnly hands her a teaspoon.

It’s ok, she says, patting his hand. You’ll learn.

To be honest, while i adore a lot of the visual aesthetics and inspirations of the films (taking Rohirrim’s Land Vikings to the logical extreme, Gondor’s Byzantium vibes), I have to say the books. It’s the original source material, its the books that defined the modern fantasy genre, and there is so much subtext and atmosphere that can’t be captured any adaptation so far!

2. Which character do you connect with the most? tbh I kind of really dig Gandalf’s vibe, from the little we know of him on a personal level. And while the hobbits are the most relatable characters, and I really GET frodo’s whole slow descent, i have to say it’s a toss up between Gimli and Treebeard. Gimli because he’s very relatable to me in a way i can’t quite articulate, and Treebeard’s sad note about his people’s inevitable decline and his benevolence in spite of how the world has largely forgotten him is very emotional to me.

10. Who is your OTP? Hard to say! I’m fond of Arwen/Aragorn for obvious reasons, but honestly, if there’s a ship, i probably dig it! pretty fond of a lot of brotps; among them, Eowyn and Merry, and Boromir and the collective hobbit people.

Honestly, Gimli gets played TOO much for laughs in the movies; he’s a fairly poetic warrior straight out of the norse Poetic Eddas and he consistently speaks in the most lyrical ways, so him being a comic relief bumbler feels a little like a disservice to him. (Granted, I still love movie Gimli, but where’s his loving speeches about the careful cultivations of a mine, eh???)

I’m unsure how the earlier animated Hobbit movie factors into this (though i have a fairly clear memory of it as a kid, and the visual designs of the hobbits influenced me for a long time since), but then there’s the animated Lord of the Rings movie, by Ralph Bakshi. Hoo BOY you definitely know all about that one! Pros, the animation is genuinely experimental and intriguingly weird at times, the regular character animation is fantastic and i really love Aragorn’s grimy, ‘Kay from Sword in The Stone but brunette’ look. Cons: The animation is also experimental. Sometimes, it looks really weird. I MEAN THE BALROG. WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT ABOUT, I TELL YOU, aND WHATS GOING ON WITH THE ORCS. And poor Sam gets hit HARD With the comic bumbler button; that said, i think i would have liked to see how they handled the 3rd movie, and this movie DOES cover some things that didn’t make it into the Jackson films, such as Sauruman’s coat of many colors.

It remains one of the most influential stories in my life, though I didn’t read it until the mvies came out; as a younger child, i found the tone of the book too difficult to readily grasp, and it wasn’t until later that I was able to do it, but it was a good thing i did; to this day, Tolkien’s writings remain a touchstone in my life, especially in terms of how people try to imitate him without considering the context of his writing, and his sub-text about the corrupting influence of power and the value in struggling against evil, even if it is hopeless, remains a big aspect of my ideas of heroic fantasy.

Okay but I think Galadriel is probably my fav, both in terms of personal headcanons (i imagine her as being tall and perfectly capable of ripping foes in half), and canon implications that she is the fairest of all, sort of like an inverse fairy tale queen; she has the evil sorceress queen vibe, but is pure good.

My mom was a divorced single mother of two way back when being divorced and a single mom was still frowned upon, and not only did they give my brother and I a place in the school mid-year (because my mom was invited to leave our previous Catholic school after she got the divorce, btw…) but everyone at the school – from teachers to janitors – were always super helpful and caring towards us. I know that’s not always the case with Catholic schools, and it’s certainly not how they are portrayed in this show, but even though I’m more of an Atheist nowadays, I thought it was worth mentioning that there are some cool Catholic schools out there.

Beyond the Coming Age of Networked MatterBy Bruce Sterling

I wasn’t too chuffed about the weird changes I saw in my favorite start-up guy. Crawferd was a techie I knew from my circuit: GE Industrial Internet, IBM Smart Cities, the Internet-of-Things in Hackney hackathons. The kind of guy I thought I understood.

I relied on Crawferd to deliver an out-there networked-matter pitch to my potential investors. He was great at this, since he was imaginative, inventive, fearless, tireless, and he had no formal education. Crawferd wore unlaced Converse shoes and a lot of Armani. He had all the bumbling sincerity of a Twitter Arab Spring.

Crawferd could see no difference between physics and metaphysics. The way he had it figured, all matter was code. If you suggested that his trippy hacker mysticism was not entirely plausible—that rocks were rocks and trees were trees, they weren’t “networks”— he’d brood at length, then chase you from the hackerspace, slam the door, and blog compulsively.

Given his deep unworldliness and his intense interior life, Crawferd was a pretty easy guy for me to manage. We got along okay, while Sophia and Fatima totally loved Crawferd. S&F were my two wealthy oil widows from Dubai. Their Gulf State pin money had to go somewhere that wasn’t Cyprus or Bitcoins.

So for a while things were cozy. I’d arrange funding brunches in Gstaad, where Fatima and Sophia went skiing. I’d wheel in Mr. California Ideology while they had their mint tea and shared the hookah. The sparks would fly.

Crawferd was cool about Sophia and Fatima. He never asked them for much, and he always brought them nifty digital fitness toys. All tech chicks kind of dug Crawferd. He had this spooky geek tenderness, a possibly sensual, my bits-might-turn-to-atoms thing going on.

So S&F hung on his every word, but the truth was, the guy simply didn’t know how to cash in. He was all sci-fi and no megacorp.

Then he missed a couple of gigs and he stopped updating on LinkedIn. I was busy helping Microsoft waste some Kinect money, so I didn’t bother him.

Then I breezed through Palo Alto and he spotted me on Foursquare. He shot me a mysterious, incoherent SMS full of sick Tweet orthographics. “W3 sh4ll overl4p time, space, and dimensions,

I got rid of that thing pronto. I always erase after reading, my lawyer taught me that. But seeing his freaked message, I took good care to meet him F2F.

Crawferd was lurking and had gone very downside-scenario. He had tinfoiled all the windows inside a nameless AirBnB, which he’d rented from some shivering TumblrGoth who was way into, like, black candles, inverted pentagrams, and big plastic 3Dprinted gargoyles.

Fancy LED lights in Shapeways Nervous-System lamps were segueing through every color in the spectrum, while Soundcloud was streaming the shriekiest works of Grimes.

This was not his customary scene, and I further perceived that my man Crawferd had shed several kilos, dyed his hair pastel, and failed to shave. He kept compulsively stroking the filthy screen of his Chinese-knockoff fondleslab.

“Buzz, old buddy,” he croaked at me, “it used to upset me, because I couldn’t deliver a massive breakthrough in the networked- matter space. I talked a great game sometimes. But I couldn’t execute. But now I’m so freaked out! Yes! Freaky from success! I have networked matter!”

Crawferd had this thousand-mile killer-drone stare now, and also that rigid, pedantic, coder tone of voice, that grammar-nazi thing you see mostly on Ayn Rand websites.

My deliverable seemed clear to me: reduce fever, resume chill, and restore functionality.

“Crawferd, pal, listen up. You’ve been way overdoing it in an overheated tech scene. I’ve got your back, and I’m thinking Oahu. There’s this cool yoga-hula ashram out there, no Internet connectivity, no cell-phone bars, nothing. Some exercise, brown rice, and vitamin B, and you’ll be the old Crawferd in no time.”

“Buzz, this matter is about matter. We see matter because we’re constructed from matter. We imagine we’re made from matter because all we can measure with our network sensors is a narrowly materialistic set of inputs. But that is not the cosmic truth, Buzz. A new science underlies ‘matter.’ It’s about a cellular- automata framework in which all material manifestations are computationally equivalent.”

I’d seen these sad symptoms in other guys like him. My fave Californian tech boy had gone straight off the ledge into full Erik Davis techgnosis. “Oahu’s just hours away. Beaches, blue sky, maybe a sweet, understanding hippie lady with some pakalolo.”

“I have found the grail for the coming age of networked matter, Buzz. I have seized its Philosopher’s Stone. I have found a way to transform all matter into network.”

“Why?” I said.

He got that look on his face. “What do you mean, ‘why’?”

“Where is my user benefit? Where is the business model? You can’t get VC backers for that scheme! That is pure Tim Leary mystic woo-woo! You’re a coder, Crawferd. I can hear crap like that from L.A. screenwriters.”

“Do I look like I’m handwaving at you? I have built a freaking demo! I can run it for you, right here, off my phablet.”

Crawferd was a proud and touchy fanatic, but then again, so was Steve Jobs. You can take one fatal step too far into the Reality Distortion Field, and all the typewriters will vanish. They don’t come back, either. “So, what does your demo, uh, demo?”

“You remember those two Maker kids? The ones I had hacking those beehives for me?”

I remembered his interns, all right. Two cute Millennial designer kids. Their names escaped me, but she was, like, very Kevin Kelly techno-emergence, while he was very Jussi Parikka insect media. They were Crawferd’s start-up slaves. Being Makers, they worked around the clock without a salary, just like bees did.

“Your beehive kids,” I said.

“Great design research team! They went deep into the bee ‘umwelt,’ that sensory world of bees that only bees can perceive. Bees are intensely illustrative of matter-networking principles. Bees scarcely have brains, yet they still assemble and congeal all the nectar and pollen within a given area.”

“So that’s your demo? It’s bees? Cut to the chase! Where’s the humming and stinging?”

“That’s not my demo yet . . . but here, look what they did on

Kickstarter. You’ll appreciate this.”

Crawferd caressed his cruddy little “phablet”—man, I really hate that word—and there they were, Crawferd’s two favorite Maker kids. Nicely dressed up in black and yellow bee-themed cosplay duds, with that embedded video that crowdfunding projects always do.

“Hi there, people of the Internet! I’m Adrienne, a graphic interface designer from Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design, and this is Julio, my coder and Significant Other!”

There followed ninety seconds of jerky handheld from Adrienne’s iPhone. Her pitch was all about the graphic interfaces through which bees perceive and manipulate matter. Bee sensors, mostly, their compound eyes, antennae, and their big tonguey mandibles.

Then Julio horned in, to vlog about the bee-code running on their tiny bee brains.

Bee brains lacked much processing power. Just enough hardware in there to run a high-level bee-dance language where the bees could clue each other in about tasty matter resources. Adrienne had mocked this system up on a whiteboard with boxes and arrows. Julio had coded it with open-source modules.

Then they’d created these 3Dprinted plastic “bee puppets.” Their fake plastic Maker bees were, like, awesomely effective at bee dancing. Their robot bees, set dancing by Arduino, were basically Trojan Bees. They had gotten root in the hive. They had powned the hive colony superorganism. Those bees would do whatever the hackers wanted.

“Their bee-swarm pitch is out of this world!” I told Crawferd. “I can’t believe I haven’t seen this idea before!”

The Maker kids ramped up to their triumphant climax. Being new to California, they’d noticed all the window-box marijuana plants. They’d hacked their bees to go out to forage for dope pollen.

They showed the camera their existence proof: a double fistful of honey-drenched Silicon Valley hashish.

Visual Library

When we see experienced artists make drawings without even looking at a reference and at an epic level of excellence our brain explodes. How is it possible that someone can do something like that?! The immediate example, the artist (God) Kim Jung Gi from South Korea. If you have seen any of  his videos, you will understand immediately what I am talking about. It's not that he draw without references, he starts directly by a corner of a wall and fill it with ton of characters, all in perfect perspective and at an extraordinary level of detail.

Cuando vemos a artistas experimentados hacer dibujos sin siquiera mirar una referencia y a un nivel épico de excelencia nuestro cerebro explota. ¡¿Como es posible que alguien pueda hacer algo así?! El ejemplo inmediato, el artista (Dios) surcoreano Kim Jung Gi. Si has visto alguno de sus vídeos, entenderás enseguida de lo que hablo. No es solo que dibuje sin referencias, directamente empieza por una esquina de una pared y te la llena de personajes, todos en perfecta perspectiva y a un nivel de detalles extraordinario.

This level is partly thanks to the technique of this great artist, of course, but I would say that 80% of its achievement is due to the great control it has of its visual library. Before I continue to throw these two words to your face, I will try to clarify the concept.

Este nivel, en parte es gracias a la técnica de este grandisimo artista, por supuesto, pero diría que un 80% de su logro, se debe al control tan grande que posee de su librería visual.  Antes de seguir tirándoles a la cara estas dos palabras, intentaré aclarar el concepto.

The visual library is everything you accumulate over time in your memory that can serve as a reference. Paintings, photos, movies, patterns, designs etc.

La librería visual es todo aquello que acumulas con el tiempo en tu memoria que te pueda servir como referente. Pinturas, fotos, películas, patrones, diseños etc

This is extremely important for all artists, but especially for concept artists since their job is to constantly pull things out of their head. It is very difficult to put someone to draw an epic fantasy knight killing a dragon if he only see things related to sports, for example. It is not impossible, of course, but he surely will end up drawing the most common symbology to represent these elements, and he won't try to do something more "original". We all have within this symbology associated with different elements since children, due to the torrent of information that we face daily, do not misunderstand me, it can be very helpful. But the client will usually hire you to do something "original" and it is important to feed your visual memory to be able to do this.

Esto es sumamente importante para todos los artistas, pero en especial para los  concept artists ya que su trabajo consiste en sacar cosas constantemente de su cabeza. Es muy difícil hacer dibujar a alguien un caballero de fantasía épica matando un dragón, si solo ha visto cosas relacionadas con deportes por ejemplo. No es imposible, por supuesto, pero seguramente termine haciendo la simbología mas común para representar estos elementos, y no intentará hacer algo mas "original". Todos tenemos dentro esta simbología asociada a diferentes elementos desde críos, debido al torrente de información al que nos enfrentamos diariamente, no me malentendáis, puede ser de mucha ayuda. Pero el cliente normalmente te contratará para hacer algo “original” y es importante alimentar tu memoria visual para poder hacer esto. 

Returning to the master Kim, in the words of the same artist, he spends all his time observing new content, nourishing this library, living new experiences. Of course, having exceptional memory helps a lot. I do not know how accurate this observation is, but many times I process the images in my head as if it were a mental photomontage (?) While reading the description of a new piece, I am mounting the image in my head taking interesting details from different sites of my memory. Then I just have to do the painting, maybe some sketches to retain that first impression.

Volviendo al maestro Kim, según las palabras del mismo artista, se pasa todo el tiempo observando, alimentando esa libreria y viviendo nuevas experiencias. Claro que tener una memoria excepcional ayuda mucho. No sé hasta que punto sea acertada esta observación, pero muchas veces proceso las ilustraciones en mi cabeza como si se tratara de un fotomontaje mental (?) donde al leer la descripción de según que pieza, voy montando la imagen tomando detalles interesantes de diferentes sitios de mi memoria. Luego solo tengo que ejecutar la pintura, quizás algunos bocetos para retener esa primera impresión. 

Por ejemplo, para esta pieza, tenia muy claro desde el principio que quería hacer. Recién había visto la película The Witch, con su paleta de colores tan limitada, el tipo de iluminación tan suave, falta de contraste y demás. También añadí a la mezcla algunas pieza de concept art de Jaime Jones que me hicieron mas redonda la idea. Y todo eso originó esta ilustración.

For example, for this piece, It was very clear for me from the beginning what I wanted to do. I had only recently seen The Witch, with its limited color palette, the soft lighting, lack of contrast and so on. Also added to the mix some pieces of concept art by Jaime Jones from Destiny that gave me a more complette idea. And all that originated this illustration.

You need to grow this tool, it is vital not to stop consuming new material. Apart from the entertainment that presents a movie or series, try to get the most out of the material presented to you. Even (mostly) poor quality films, which usually start in their great majority from interesting concepts and get twisted in their execution. If you stick with the good ideas, then you can take advantage of them in your work. Sometimes I find it very difficult to enjoy a movie because my mind is focused on the visual part, designs, photography, etc. But oh well.

Necesitas hacer crecer esta herramienta, es fundamental no dejar de consumir material nuevo. A parte del entretenimiento que presenta ver alguna peli o serie, intentad sacarle el máximo posible al material que se te presenta. Incluso (sobretodo) pelis de mala calidad, que suelen partir en su gran mayoría de conceptos interesantes que luego se tuercen en la ejecución. Si te quedas con las buenas ideas, luego las puedes aprovechar en tu trabajo. A veces se me hace muy dificil disfrutar de una pelicula porque tengo la mente centrada en la parte visual, diseños, fotografía etc. Pero bueno (?)

There are also very interesting tools that not only help you expand your library, but keep all those resources close at hand. Pinterest is one of the best known and is wonderful. I will not explain how it works, but seriously, start using it now if you don’t do it already.

También hay herramientas muy interesantes que no solo te ayudan a expandir tu librería, sino a mantener cerca todos esos recursos a mano. Pinterest es uno de los mas conocidos y es una maravilla. No me pondré a explicar como funciona, pero en serio, empiecen desde ya a usarlo.

The second part of working with your visual library is simply applying those new elements you are archiving. In the same way that writing helps to remember ideas better. Drawing will help you keep a better memory of those new resources. Try to apply them in your portfolio and in your studies. As often as possible.

La segunda parte de trabajar con tu libreria visual es simplemente aplicar esos nuevos elementos que vas archivando. De la misma forma que escribir ayuda a recordar mejor las ideas. Dibujar te ayudará a mantener mejor recuerdo de esos nuevos recursos. Intenta aplicarlos en tu portafolio y en tus estudios. Tan seguido como te sea posible.

tip (?):One of the sources that I like to exploit more are books. Although I put it aside because they work differently, and I'm not sure that it will help expand the library, but rather to explore ideas. Many times when we are reading a book we have a very specific idea of what a certain character looks like  is our heads, then if we are going back to the actual  literal description from its author, it has nothing to do with that first image you got. But you can always use that first impression as your own plus you already know the character so well!. The same goes for places or atmospheres.  

Tip (?): Una de las fuentes que mas me gusta explotar, son los libros. Aunque lo pongo a parte porque funcionan de forma diferente, y no estoy del todo seguro que sirva para expandir la librería, sino mas bien para explorar ideas. Muchas veces al leer un libro nos hacemos una idea muy especifica de como es cierto personaje en la cabeza, luego si vamos a hacemos un montaje a partir de la descripción literal del escritor, no tiene nada que ver con esa primera imagen tuya. Pero siempre te queda para aprovecharla a tu gusto. Lo mismo pasa con los lugares o atmósferas.
