@astaldis what is your English dictionary I want the same 😅! Because I struggled to find the good meaning. Now here is the story of my fucking search 😅

On my first try, this is what I got for Cambridge and Oxford online dictionaries at first.

The Oxford one is the worst 🤣🤣. This is the full entry I have in the English part. It sounds less and less poetic.

In Cambridge, this was better but it was confusing. There was only the French to English entry with no definition but examples. The only mention of "the antipodes" is a non clickable text. There is no English to French from what I have seen.

But it got the figurative entry I was searching.

The figurative entry us ok but "antipode" is not used there in the examples. So I had the feeling it was not used at all.

And that's what I aimed for : a definition of the figurative use of "antipode(s)" in english or at least used in a sentence so I could see if this was used like in French.

Something like this.

I found my salvation with Wikionary. Who had thought 😅 ?

Searching more this way, I found that there was another word in English that was synonymous : "antipous". There was a reference but this was a dead end on Oxford dictionary.

Searching antipous in conjunction with Orford dictionary, I found the correct entry.

It was simply that the plural form isn't in the results in google search if you don't put the "the" before... like it is so far away from the singular 🤣.

I feel so old when I look at the dates 🤣. But now I am certain that I can use the word the way I intended.

Bloody hell, dear readers, I hope you'll like my use of the word "antipode" in the next chapter 🤣 !

Writing in another language is sometimes infuriating. When they have the one word your language need a full sentence to translate, it's a golden moment. But when this is the other way around, this is 😩.

I took the real dictionary out because I didn't trust the online dictionary when I found no direct translation for "antipode". Man, I had to put "diametrically opposed" in the mouth a poet. This is so wrong lol. It sounds like a mathematical rule about acute and obtuse angles.

It's driving me crazy, I might have to change a whole dialog to make it sound right.

Also : note to self. Use the real dictionary more often. In these couple of pages, there are words that remind me of our sad world, but also you can have "antirides" and "anus" just a few words appart and giggle alone in you room. Silly me.

Because... well, we're uncipherable? *laughing* It's the name of the studio not a person! I think we might have what looks like a mini "writing department" but it's more like a "writer's room". There are a lot of overlaps. And we don't have an open office concept, we don't have offices at all in such a physical sense so we work in our own office or at cafes if it's safe and things like that and communicate online and offline when we can manage that.

As I'm gradually learning how to read Vietnamese accents I'd like to complain again at how the movie Raya tried to flavour the characters' sentences with Viet words was terrible.

I'm not a native speaker, nor do I speak Viet regularly, but I can say for sure that they way the actors said the words were. Horribly wrong.

Here's one I'm familiar with: The word for Dad

(This is how I'd write it with Viet sounds, btw. In English I'd transliterate it as "boh")

I had a feeling that the terms for father would be different depending on the region, so I looked it up and it seems I was right about that, haha

At a first glance, "Bố" seems like the closest match to how the movie says it. I mean, the letters are the same, right? Nah.

It's a bit too early to write off Raya speaking Northern dialect, though, as the accents change up the pronounciation to be farther from how they say it in the movie. Here is how Jessica Nguyen says it on Wikionary:

anyway I'm just being salty, haha. I'm glad for the SE Asian representation, but tbh I think the additional words were kind of forced.

What really baffles me though is that Raya's voice actor is Vietnamese-American, and it seems to me that she was close to her Vietnamese parents, so I'm not sure why she had to say it incorrectly? I mean, I talk to my dad in English but if I called him "Boh" I think he would probably slap me or something, lol.

Uturuncu is a dormant volcano in the Sur Lípez Province of Bolivia that has active fumaroles between its two summits. Its name means "jaguar" in Quechua. The highest mountain in southwestern Bolivia, it rises to 6,008 metres (19,711 ft) within the Altiplano–Puna volcanic complex, a province of large volcanoes and calderas which over the last few million years have emplaced about 10,000 km3 (2,000 cu mi) of ignimbrites in large eruptions. Uturuncu's last eruption was about 250,000 years ago. Although it has no glaciers at present, it shows traces of a former glaciation. Underneath it lies the Altiplano–Puna Magma Body, a large sill formed by partially molten rocks. Since 1992, satellite observations have indicated a large area of regional uplift centered on Uturuncu, which may indicate magma intrusion under the volcano. This might be a prelude to large-scale volcanic activity, including supervolcanic activity and caldera formation.

I actually tried to develop a system like this, a decade and a half ago when I was working overnight at Tim Hortons.

TL;DR: Human half-race offspring are the most common for cultural and biological reasons, and for an unknown reason the only half-race offspring guaranteed to be fertile. Technically any race can otherwise interbreed with any other, but there are a lot of cultural pressures against this for most races.

Anyone interested in my insanity, it’s below the cut.

So, anyway, the backstory of the world. All races descend from one “proto-race.” But they were also each created by racial gods, because it’s Pratchettian (interestingly a word in wikionary! defined as I meant it and everything!).

Basically, this pre-history proto-race went out across the world, different groups settling in different climates and regions. Their, the proto-race would adapt to the environment, and the collective beliefs of the group would consolidate into racial god/s. These gods, in turn, would further shape their followers in their image, until the races became defined.

Except humans. While humans have gods, they’re more Shinto-type lower divinity instead of racial/creator level. But humans also - aren’t the proto-race? At least, no one believes they are, because the few legends about the proto-race before they settled into the different races much higher magic etc than humans have. So no one’s sure, and since every other race lives longer than humans no one who actually knows about the proto-race hypothesis would acknowledge being descended from humans.

However, there is one thing special about humans: they can breed easily with the other races, and half humans are fertile.

Technically, all other races can have offspring with each other, and some (especially elves) do interbreed. The resulting child is 99.9% chance of being sterile, however; see real world mules and related crossbreeds.

The child of a half-human and a (different) non-human race is a complicated chance of being fertile, but generally very very low.

Racial characteristics I developed for interesting groups:

Gnomes and halflings are technically still the same species; however, the groups had a religious schism, separating their paired racial gods. Gnome-Halfling children would be fertile; gnome culture is very prejudice against interbreeding, however, and views Halflings as a different race. In time, they will become different races as their racial gods grow further apart.

Halfings, by the way, are the fun-loving type and will happily have a relationship with anything that can stand them. Half-halflings with races other than human and elf are therefore rare.

Elves are literally photosynthetic and, otherwise, herbivores. They have the longest lifespan of any known race. During the Elven adolescence, the elf is charged with traveling the world until adulthood. Many elves form relationships with other suitable races during this time, and children from these unions are referred to as “Beloveds.” Always cursed with shorter lifespans than the elven parent, a half-elf generally will remain with the other parent’s people when the elf returns to their own family for an arranged marriage and a “proper” life. (Yes, loosely inspired by Amish Rumspringa. Unlike the real world, however, this is specifically “get the crazies out, while out of sight and not corrupting impressionable youth too early”)

Dark Elves/Drow exist. While they differ greatly physically from surface-living elves (including, obviously, losing photosynthesis), the Drow Goddess believes them to be “true elves” and thus they are counted as “elves” by everything magical unless deliberately accounted for. A surface elf-drow offspring is unfortunately almost always a full blooded drow (unfortunate given the most common circumstances this would occur). Despite surface elves have exceptionally little gender stratification, female (noble) drow hold all power (generally on a basis of magical strength) while (all) male drow are both highly magically resistant and incapable of casting magic.

Dwarves are primarily carnivores, supplemented by fungus and rocks rich in relevant minerals. Dwarven belief is that they “remain pure” and cannot breed with other races; it’s interesting that such a widely held belief about a race, even one with religious underpinnings for most, is not actually true given how racial gods work… (I would have more here, but it’d just be cribbing from Pterry’s excellent dwarf culture since I can’t imagine anything else anymore…)

There exists a reptilian race (non-draconic) that are generally very friendly with elves. Interbreeding with warm-blooded races, however, is difficult from simple biology. Only an offspring that matches the mother’s “type” (e.g. warmblooded mother, warmblooded baby) is viable.

Half-Elves and Half-Orcs are so popular in every D&D-based systems but what about other race mixes? 

What about Half-Dwarves or Half-Hobbits? 

Orcdwarves? Orcelves? Hobbitelves? Elfdwarves? Elfhobbits?

It’s amazing how much the academia has programmed us to dis wiki etc. to the point we even forget we can actually use it academically too like

I was really struggling with coming up with more verbs for my research, and asking ppl/looking up printed dictionaries didn’t really help

And then I go to wikionary and boom, I have found like 10 fitting verbs.
