Transforming your modular kitchen into a popular and functional masterpiece requires a careful balance of aesthetics and utility. Begin by choosing sleek, modern cabinets in strong or subtle tones, complimented by sophisticated hardware. Use open shelving to showcase stylish dishware or vivid plants, bringing a touch of nature and flair. Consider installing a statement backsplash with geometric tiles or a unique mural to create a focal point. These pieces are pre-made and may be constructed in a variety of ways to meet your specific needs and kitchen layout. Decorating your modular kitchen correctly may turn it into a fashionable and functional room. Here are some innovative ideas for decorating your kitchen with Regalo Kitchens.
Choosing the Right Color Scheme The color scheme sets the tone for your modular kitchen. Here are some tips to select the perfect colors:
Neutral Tones White and Off-White: These hues convey a sense of spaciousness and cleanliness. They are ideal for small kitchens or those with limited natural light. Grey and Beige: These tones provide refinement and are ideal for modern and minimalist settings.
Bold Colors Red and Yellow: These bold hues may make your kitchen appear energetic and inviting. They are great for bigger kitchens that require a focus point. Navy Blue and Forest Green: These deep tones add richness and a sense of luxury to your kitchen.
Cabinet Designs and Materials Cabinets are a crucial element of a modular kitchen. Here’s how to choose the best ones:
Material Choices Wood: Wooden cabinets are classic and robust, and they may give warmth to your kitchen. Popular options include oak, maple, and cherry. Laminate: A cost-effective and versatile choice, laminate comes in various colors and patterns, making it easy to match your modular kitchen’s theme. Acrylic: Acrylic cabinets provide a high-gloss, modern style. They're also simple to clean and maintain.
Designs Shaker Style: Simple and timeless, shaker cabinets feature a recessed panel and are very versatile. Flat Panel: Sleek and modern, flat panel cabinets are perfect for minimalist kitchen designs. Glass-Fronted: Adding glass doors to certain cabinets can break up the monotony and allow you to display exquisite dishware.
Innovative Storage Solutions Effective storage is key in a modular kitchen. Utilize these ideas to keep your kitchen organized:
Pull-Out Drawers and Shelves
Corner Units: Optimize corner spaces with pull-out shelves that make accessing items easier. Tall Cabinets: Use tall units with pull-out shelves for storing large or bulky items without clutter. Microwave and Oven: Integrate these into your cabinets to create a seamless effect and save counter space. Refrigerator: A built-in refrigerator can blend with the cabinetry, maintaining a uniform look.
Smart Accessories Drawer Organizers: Use adjustable drawer organizers to properly arrange your utensils and silverware. Lazy Susans: Perfect for deep cabinets, lazy Susans ensure you can easily reach all items.
Countertop Choices The countertop is a focal point in any kitchen. Here are some materials to consider:
Granite and Marble Durability and Luxury: Granite and marble are both long-lasting and provide a beautiful appearance to your modular kitchen. They come in a variety of designs and hues. Maintenance: Granite is more durable and less porous than marble, making it easier to maintain.
Quartz and Engineered Stone Versatility: Quartz countertops come in a variety of hues and designs and are both long-lasting and low-maintenance. Non-Porous: These surfaces are resistant to stains and scratches, making them ideal for busy kitchens.
Solid Surface and Butcher Block Seamless Look: Solid surfaces like Corian offer a seamless appearance and can be molded to include integrated sinks. Warmth and Character: Butcher block counters offer warmth and a natural vibe to rustic or farmhouse-style kitchens.
Decorative Elements Adding personal touches can make your modular kitchen feel more welcoming and comfortable. Consider these decorating ideas:
Plants and Greenery Herb Garden: A small indoor herb garden can add freshness and provide you with easy access to your favorite herbs. Potted Plants: Place small potted plants on windowsills or countertops to bring a touch of nature indoors.
Artwork and Decor Wall Art: Hang artwork or decorative plates on your modular kitchen walls to add personality and color. Rugs and Mats: A stylish rug or mat can add warmth and comfort to your kitchen floor.
Functional Decor Stylish Storage Jars: Use decorative jars to store ordinary products such as sugar, coffee, and pasta. They both enhance the decor and provide a utilitarian purpose. Open Shelving: Display your lovely dishware or cookbooks on open shelves for a functional and attractive touch.
Conclusion Decorating your kitchen involves a balance of functionality and elegance. You may create a beautiful and useful room by choosing the right color schemes, cabinet designs, creative storage solutions, and decorative elements. Cooking in Style: Trendy Kitchen Remodeling Tips for a Modern Makeover
Tumblr media
In the heart of every home, the kitchen stands as a space where families gather, meals are prepared, and memories are created. A stylish and modern kitchen not only enhances the overall aesthetics of your home but also elevates the culinary experience. If you're considering a kitchen makeover, here are some trendy remodeling tips to bring your cooking space into the contemporary era.
1. Open Concept Design: Embrace the trend of open-concept kitchens that seamlessly integrate with the rest of your living space. Knock down unnecessary walls to create a spacious and inviting atmosphere. This not only promotes better communication but also allows natural light to flood the area, making it a brighter and more welcoming space.
2. Sleek and Functional Cabinetry: Opt for sleek, handle-less cabinets to achieve a minimalist and modern look. High-gloss finishes in neutral tones like white, gray, or black add a touch of sophistication. Consider deep drawers and pull-out shelves for convenient storage, keeping your kitchen clutter-free and organized. For expert advice on cabinetry, contact Sunnylea Homes, your go-to partner for elegant and functional kitchen solutions.
3. Smart Appliances: Infuse technology into your kitchen with smart appliances that make cooking a breeze. From smart refrigerators to Wi-Fi-enabled ovens, these innovations not only add a futuristic touch but also enhance efficiency. Imagine preheating your oven on your way home or checking the contents of your fridge from your smartphone. Stay ahead of the curve with the latest kitchen gadgets to make your culinary experience truly cutting-edge.
4. Quartz Countertops: Say goodbye to traditional granite and welcome the elegance of quartz countertops. Durable, low-maintenance, and available in a variety of colors and patterns, quartz adds a touch of luxury to your kitchen. Its non-porous nature makes it resistant to stains, ensuring your countertops stay pristine even after the messiest cooking sessions.
5. Statement Lighting: The entire atmosphere of your kitchen can be changed by the lighting. Incorporate statement pendant lights or chic chandeliers above the kitchen island to create a focal point. Choose fixtures that complement your overall design aesthetic and provide ample task lighting for cooking. A well-lit kitchen not only looks stunning but also ensures a functional and safe cooking environment.
6. Bold Backsplashes: Use a striking backsplash to create a statement. Subway tiles are timeless, but consider experimenting with geometric patterns, vibrant colors, or even textured materials like marble or metal. A striking backsplash not only protects your walls from splatters but also adds a touch of personality to your kitchen.
7. Mixed Materials: Embrace the trend of mixing different materials for a visually dynamic kitchen. Combine wood, metal, and glass elements to create a harmonious blend of textures. From wooden flooring to stainless steel appliances and glass-fronted cabinets, the juxtaposition of materials adds depth and character to your kitchen space.
8. Functional Islands: A kitchen island is not just a countertop; it's a multifunctional space that can serve as a prep area, dining table, or even a home office. Choose a design that complements your kitchen layout and provides additional storage. An island with built-in power outlets can also serve as a charging station for your gadgets, making it a truly versatile centerpiece.
9. Natural Elements: Incorporate natural elements into your kitchen design to bring the outside inside. Consider adding potted plants, herb gardens, or even a small indoor waterfall for a refreshing touch. Natural materials like wood and stone contribute to a warm and inviting atmosphere, creating a perfect balance with the sleek and modern features.
10. Personalized Touches: Finally, infuse your personality into the kitchen design with personalized touches. Display your favorite cookbooks, incorporate family photos, or add unique artwork to create a space that reflects your style. A well-designed kitchen is not just about following trends; it's about creating a space that feels like home.

Stunning Thunder White Stones for Your Kitchen:
Tumblr media
Thunder White complements striking cabinet choices like solid navy blue or deep dark oak. Profound red additions will enhance the stone's stunning reflections. Depending on the tile, the patterns can be straight or strip-shaped with different movement options to match different task needs.
Anyone looking for a natural stone countertop that is both affordable and durable should consider granite. When molten rock erupts from the Earth's core, granite is produced. No two slabs of granite are alike, even if they come from the same stone, since vortices and stripes in granite are formed by the bending and lifting of the Earth's crust during the freezing phase of rock.
Classic White Granite Finishes:
Polished
Your slab is ground, sanded, and rubbed with polished stone until it has a flawlessly smooth, shiny surface. For designers or homeowners aiming to create an opulent aesthetic, the high-gloss effect produced by this finish is essential since the shine brings out the inherent brilliance of the patterns and movement within your granite. In addition, a high-polish finish makes the stone easier to clean and stain-resistant.
A soft cloth and various specially formulated natural stone cleansers work excellently for cleaning polished surfaces. Additionally, polished stone can go up to a year without sealing. Thunder White is a glossy surface that reflects light to make any space appear brighter.
Design Tips for Your White Granite Slabs:
Thunder White granite has distinctive and dramatic veining, featuring neutral colours but remarkable beauty. It is less stark than a pure white pattern.
Thunder White looks great in modern kitchens with bright cabinet colours like salsa red or intense navy blue. Since the movement of Thunder White granite is densely webbed and relatively consistent over the whole slab, it is simple to include distinctive design elements to provide a coherent appearance.
Thunder White can also be used in luxury kitchens because it resembles White Carrara marble, which produces a high-end look and provides all the strength and resilience of granite. Thunder White countertops can fulfil any homeowner's goal for an opulent, glossy look when paired with premium stainless steel equipment and expensive lighting fixtures.
By embracing the balance between traditional and contemporary features in this design, homeowners can create a modern, efficient kitchen aesthetic. Taupe, grey, or white cabinetry can create a style that will remain fashionable for years. A trendy yet straightforward backsplash, like a white subway tile mosaic, can also be used.
How to Maintain Your Granite Slab:
For the typical homeowner, maintenance with granite is incredibly manageable. Granite is highly durable and has low porosity. Thus it is unlikely to sustain scratches or stains. Of course, owners of granite can take a few measures to keep their surfaces looking their best, such as:
Countertops that are Regularly Sealed
Your countertops will be more water-resistant if you seal them. However, when the time comes, you can also buy a sealing product to use on your granite. It would help if you had your granite professionally packed as soon as it is placed. Re-sealing surfaces are recommended according to industry standards around once a year, especially for lighter designs like Thunder White.

Repainting Black Kitchen Cabinets
If you are tired of your kitchen’s dark color, you can choose to repaint it black. There are many different colors of black paint that you can choose, but there are some things that you should keep in mind before painting your cabinets black. One thing to remember is that dark colors tend to make a space appear small. Choosing natural elements for your kitchen can make it feel warmer and less sterile. You may also want to consider choosing a matte black finish to make the cabinets less likely to pick up finger prints.
Options for black kitchen cabinets
If you are considering installing black kitchen cabinets in your home, there are many different design options to choose from. You can choose a traditional shaker style or a rustic raised panel. Then, you can combine black cabinets with other types of cabinet systems. Depending on your space, you can also opt for base cabinets. Choose from the different design options available and select the one that suits your taste. However, you must make sure that all aspects of the design complement each other.
Black kitchen cabinets are a timeless color, and can work well with antique pieces or vintage ones. However, it is important to choose the right color scheme to create the look you want. Also, you should know that black is an intense color, so you have to select other colors to balance it out. You can also opt for a monochromatic design for a dramatic and moody look. However, you should keep in mind that you have to maintain a dark room with a dark color, so be sure to take this into account when choosing your kitchen cabinetry.
Dark colors can make an area look small
Choosing the right color scheme can make a small area feel bigger. Dark colors recede while light ones advance, creating a dramatic effect. However, they can also make a small space feel more cramped. Kelly Wearstler says that it’s important to consider the natural light available in a room. The opposite effect can be achieved by choosing a light or warm color for the rest of the room.
If you choose a dark color for the walls, you may want to reconsider your decision. Dark wall colors tend to recede, making an area seem smaller than it actually is. It can also increase heating costs and give the room a dark appearance. Nonetheless, darker colors can give a room a calming effect. In addition, they create wider shadows and depth. For this reason, it’s a good idea to use dark colors sparingly.
Natural elements can add warmth to a black kitchen
Adding natural elements to a black kitchen can soften the overall look. For instance, a backsplash made of stone or wood would look beautiful. Choosing a contrasting tile color could add a splash of colour. Black kitchen cabinets are often considered a classic style, but they can be made more palatable with a few colour accents. You can choose to have a black kitchen with white countertops and a light-coloured backsplash, or you can paint the walls a bright shade of white.
Choosing black cabinetry with a textured finish will make the space look warmer than one with a high-gloss finish. Similarly, natural elements like terracotta pots, houseplants, and textiles can bring warmth to a black kitchen. Depending on the space, you may want to replace a wood countertop with a natural element like plants, terracotta bowls, or a plant. These elements will help create a more cohesive look with the black appliances and cabinets.
Matt black finishes are less prone to finger marks
A matte finish can be a good choice for a kitchen. It reflects light very little and therefore does not show finger or smudge marks like a glossy finish would. A matte finish is also easy to clean and is less likely to collect fingerprints. It is also an economical choice as it requires no maintenance and does not de-laminate easily. Matte finishes are not as fashionable as glossy ones, but they are less likely to show scratches or finger marks.
One major advantage of a matte black finish is that it is less likely to show finger marks. Also, it looks more refined and sophisticated than a glossy finish. Matt black cabinets are more suited to a traditional-style kitchen as they do not reflect light and do not show fingerprints as easily as a glossy finish. A matte finish is also a good choice if you are working in a traditional kitchen. Gloss-finish kitchens look too modern.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should cabinets be lighter than walls?
There are no rules. This is strictly personal and would depend on your kitchen’s size, shape, and style. Dark cabinets can make your kitchen feel smaller and less spacious. A lighter cabinet will make the space feel bigger and brighten it.
A large kitchen can be made more intimate by using dark cabinets. Lighter cabinets will allow the space to feel larger and open.
It’s your decision to create the kitchen you desire and to pick the cabinet color that best suits that look. Consult a professional designer if you are still uncertain. They can help you make the right decision for your space.
What is a reasonable budget for a Metro Vancouver kitchen remodel?
Metro Vancouver’s kitchen remodeling budget is reasonable at $50,000. This budget would include new countertops, cabinets, flooring, lighting, and other expenses.
In the kitchen, where should a refrigerator go?

***
Is planning permission required for a new kitchen?
You will need permits to change the locations of electrical and plumbing. You may also need to apply for a building permit if you’re making structural changes to your walls to accommodate these changes.
Before you do any work, make sure you check with your local authority to confirm that you are allowed to use the planning permission.
What are the key characteristics of an ideal kitchen design?
An ideal kitchen has plenty of storage space and should be large enough to accommodate cooking, cleaning, entertaining, and other activities. A well-designed kitchen allows for easy access and ventilation.

How to Get Your Perfect Kitchen Design in Chestertown
One of the first questions anyone has when planning to renovate your kitchen is what is the perfect kitchen design for me? The answer requires you to dig into the details of style, space and function.
Tumblr media
Kitchen Design Style
Style has to do with what style of design you like. There are three basic types of styles in the kitchen. They are Traditional, Transitional and Contemporary.
Traditional Kitchen Design
Often described as more elegant, a traditional kitchen uses elements that have been around for generations. This includes more natural elements such as wood cabinetry, wood floors, stone such as marble or granite for the countertop. The cabinets often are raised panel and have applied moldings.
Transitional Kitchen Design
As hinted at in the name this style belongs in the middle of traditional and contemporary and can incorporate elements of each. It often keeps the warmth of more traditional designs but is simpler. This includes natural elements such as wood cabinetry but is often painted in whites, creams or lighter colors. Floors can be wood, but the countertops are often quartz and backsplashes stone, ceramic or porcelain. The cabinets are often a simple shaker.
Contemporary Kitchen Design
Contemporary kitchens have cleaner lines are cooler and minimalist. Cabinetry is often wood laminate or high gloss colors, especially white. Floors can also be laminate and quartz is for the countertops. The backsplash can be quartz or a large-scale porcelain tile with few grout lines. The cabinet style is almost exclusively slab doors.
Space in Kitchen Design
Space has to do with your actual kitchen area and what you can accomplish and adapt based on that space. Frequently, I will have clients who have a picture of what they want their space to look like. Often this can be done but once in a while it cannot. For example, a popular contemporary design is a wall of tall pantries and wall ovens with cabinets overhead. If a client’s kitchen only has 8-foot ceilings, that look is hard to accomplish.
Kitchen Design Function
Function is the last and perhaps most import element in finding your perfect kitchen design in Chestertown. If a kitchen does not function well for your needs, it will always frustrate you. Even if you only need your kitchen to look great because you do not cook, it needs to look great all the time. However, if you do cook in a kitchen, the functionality involves 3 different areas: cooking, prepping and cleanup. Each of these areas need their own appliances and fixtures to work and they need to be accessible. For example, for the cooking area a wall oven cannot be on the other side of the kitchen from the cooktop and the sink needs to be near the dishwasher.

The white can pull in some lighter aesthetics if paired with dark wood cabinetry, or on the contrary, the darker elements can provide a great visual contrast to white or grey cabinetry. Alaska White granite can vary from slab to slab, so with this material, you are sure to get a unique look in your home.
Black Granite
Black granite is a frequently used material for residential and commercial design due to its beauty and durability. This granite features black speckles. These glistening minerals that make up the black design come together to create the perfect timeless piece for your space. This granite color has been a popular choice for decades now, making it a go-to option for home remodels.
Cotton White Granite
Light cannot be described in one defining way. This stone has been around for many, many years, with its reliability and beauty, cotton white granite has created a name for itself in the stone industry. The beauty of cotton white granite can be found in its soft cream color and subtle speckles in shades of deep grey. The mixture generated through the different layers of color is brought to life by the dark black or burgundy contrasts against the soothing cream base. Designing with this stone in your home will bring a beautiful elegance to any bathroom or kitchen. A very neutral option, it can be paired with a variety of styles and colors.
One of the most popular white granites on the market, White cotton Granite can be recognized by its pristine beauty. This granite has been admired for many years and its popularity only continues to increase. This predominately white stone features mixtures of blue and grey tones running throughout. If you are looking to make a statement, pair this stone with a darker cabinet, or achieve a trending yet timeless design by combing it with white cabinetry.
Alaska Gold Granite
Known for its golden creamy tones, Alaska gold Ornamental granite is a gorgeous stone. What gives Alaska gold Ornamental its stunning color is the abundance of golden minerals that are present. Up close, you can see that dotted around the stone is a mix of brown minerals. These minerals can vary though and can range from a lovely light cream color or a dark to light honey color. Achieve a natural and flowing design when you combine Alaska gold Ornamental with finished wood cabinets that have a light or medium. The golden Earthy tones of this stone become one with the cabinets!

On Trend: Pairing Natural Stone and Quartz
When planning a new kitchen or major kitchen remodel, pairing countertop and backsplash materials present an age-old dilemma. Many designers swear by hard fast rules regarding how to make the perfect pairing, while others will say all the rules are meant to be broken!
It makes the most sense to start with your countertops. The countertop is the main hub of your kitchen and will most likely take up the bulk of your budget (other than cabinets!). Your desired style, budget, and the way you plan to use it will go a long way in determining the best material for your countertop. Generally speaking, there are more limited color/texture options with countertops whereas backsplash options are virtually unlimited. Nail your countertops first, then you can get creative and make a statement with your backsplash.
Many homeowners desire the look of a natural stone material like marble, but either doesn’t have the budget or are turned off by its high maintenance nature. This is one of the main reasons many opt for engineered quartz for their countertops. Quartz is a non-porous material which makes it virtually maintenance-free. No worries about staining from spilled red wine or highly acidic liquids. Based on advancements in the engineering process, quartz closely mimics the beauty of natural stone and is available in a large variety of colors. It is also more consistent in pattern than the natural stone making it versatile for both traditional and modern styles. As mentioned, this would allow you to get creative with your backsplash and have it define the ultimate style of the space.
Why can’t you have the beauty of natural stone and the ease of maintenance and versatility of quartz? You can, by pairing a natural stone backsplash with your quartz countertops.  It’s all about combining different colors, textures, and patterns to project the style statement you desire. For instance, pair beautiful vein cut limestone tiles with a limited pattern quartz countertop. Or add more texture by going with a stacked stone accented backsplash with quartz. To help inspire you to create your own unique combinations, let’s take a look at some examples.

Monolith Inception Kitchen Designed by Richard T. Anuszkiewicz
As a luxury kitchen specialist, it is always important for me to bring thought-provoking ideas and execution techniques to the market. At the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS) last month, I showcased my latest forward-thinking design titled “Monolith Inception”.
The Monolith Inception kitchen was commissioned by Liebherr Refrigeration to celebrate the launch of their new column refrigeration series. The concept of the kitchen is derived from the definition of “Monolithic”, meaning, “formed of a single block of stone.” This idea can be found throughout the kitchen in the crisp contemporary geometries and the layered long linear planes.
The overall palette evokes a masculine sense in dark and moody tones, think “Tom Ford Fashion”. Exotic and luxurious finishes run through the entire space. Two of the most talked-about pieces in the kitchen where the dual refrigeration armoires. The first armoire was comprised of striking poly-sheen eucalyptus wood. This high-gloss furniture styled refrigeration series has a drawer chest appearance on the bottom and includes a full refrigerator, full freezer, and full wine column.
The second armoire was more contemporary in its nature. A sleek full flat-paneled aged-brass face with the finishing touch of a fine leather stitched handles. Its bespoke details like this that create an experience for your user. This second armoire had a full 30” refrigerator and full 24” freezer.
Another showstopper was my signature Autobahn cabinet inspired by the face of the Bentley grill. This super-car cabinetry complimented the Superior Next series range with custom-aged- brass accents. A pop of excitement was found inside the cabinetry with my trademark Richer Living Collection Luce red interiors.
The island was a multi-tiered element creating a wow factor with a cantilevered 6” thick Dekton by Cosentino countertop. This Kelia material from the Natural Collection ran throughout the kitchen and was in the perfect gray hue to compliment the deep wall color. I designed the custom kitchen table with Grout house lumber highlighting a subtle chevron textured wood pattern with a brass screw detail.
The bar showcased artisan caliber plumbing products by KALLISTA in Gunmetal and hand-hammered polished silver. The Bradley USA “Chika” wall covering by Susan Jamieson of Bridget Beari Designs added a playful graphic detail and was further celebrated by the “Prost” neon sign meaning “Cheers” in German.
The final magic moment of the kitchen was the inception wine room inspired by the idea of a dream within a dream. This selfie-ready room was completely reflective and created the illusion that space infinitely continued.

Beautiful Homes of Instagram: Painted Brick Exterior
Hi, everyone! How are you today? I had such a wonderful weekend. I baked with my husband and even attempted to make some cheese… but don’t ask about that! LOL. Anyway, I am super happy and excited because the weather is finally changing and the sun is shinning. I am also so very happy because I adore Callie of ceshome6 and her style so much that this is the second time I have her on my “Beautiful Homes of Instagram” series. The first time, I shared her formal home (you can see it here) and it became one of my most-pinned posts! Today, I am proud to be sharing Callie’s new home and I am sure you will enjoy seeing and knowing all details as much as I did!
“My husband and I were originally from a small town in North Texas near Oklahoma. We have known each other since kindergarten but didn’t start dating until our junior year of high school. After graduation we moved to the Dallas area for college and have stayed close ever since. We will have been married for 15 years this July and have 4 beautiful children; a 17 year old daughter, a 14 year old daughter, a 9 year old son, and a 5 year old daughter. I feel very blessed to be able to stay at home with them and take care of our family and home.
We had planned to build a home again but during our search I found this spec home and the moment I walked in I loved it. It was my style with the color selections and it was the perfect size for our family. Another bonus was that it was already complete and ready to move in. We went for it and two months later we moved into our new home.
My favorite part of the home is the long open kitchen, dining and living space in one and we spend the most time gathered in this area as a family. I’ve always loved to decorate my homes to really feel cozy and welcoming. I don’t have one specific design style but like to incorporate in different pieces I like. My home is a mix of modern, rustic, farmhouse and french country. I also try to be minimal in my decor because with having 4 kids I don’t want to have to worry so much about moving things all the time or things getting broken.”
I hope you enjoy our house tour!

Beautiful Homes of Instagram: Painted Brick Exterior
What first caught my eye about this home was definitely the white exterior. There’s something about a white home! I was sold before I even walked in. The 2 porches in the front were also a huge selling point because we love to sit outside and watch the kids play. We have a huge open space in the front of our home that’s almost the size of a football field and perfect for football, baseball or soccer.
The exterior brick paint color is PPG Atrium White and shutters are PPG Black Forest.
Front Porch
We love that this home has 3 outdoor spaces including a front porch, a patio balcony and a side patio.

Splash of Color
I keep with a pretty neutral theme throughout the year and add in pops of color depending on the season using florals, pillows or artwork. For spring this year I’ve added in light pink, yellow, and teal.
A Little Friend
This is Jinger – pronounced Ginger… we had to change it to a “J” so she would have the same as the other kids!! I got her own couch for her to go in the living room because she’s been scratching up our leather couch with her nails and she loves it!! Target has the cutest doggie beds! I loved this buffalo plaid one and it goes so well with all my other decor!

Master Bedroom
The master bedroom is located in the back of the house.
Magnolia Inspiration
I decided I wanted a black a white theme when I saw a photo from Magnolia Home that had beautiful black wood arched frames behind the nightstands. I like to save money when possible so I found my own version from Kirkland’s (similar here) and spray painted them black to get the same look for over half the cost.
Bed & Bedding
The bed set is from the Magnolia Home line at Nebraska Furniture Mart. The bedding and lamps are from Target.
Decor
There’s a small corner in the room that was bare so I found this cute macrame wall hanging (similar here) and an olive plant at Homegoods. It’s very simple but I love it.
Faux Olive Plant: here.
Study
The study is in the front of the home off to the side when you come in the front door. I recently completed a makeover in my study by adding Weaber Lumber white washed wall boards from Home Depot to a focal wall and I love how the transformation turned out. It makes the room so bright and open. I also added greenery with these hanging macrame plant hangers from amazon. I decided to save some money by painting a few terra cotta pots from Hobby Lobby to match my decor and filled them with IKEA plants.
To really make the room pop I changed out the lighting to a beautiful wood bead chandelier from World Market. I found this desk at Restoration Hardware a few years ago and both the chair and rug are from Nebraska Furniture Mart.

Empty Nester Townhouse Design Ideas
Built by Timber Trails Development Company and designed by Julie Howard (previously featured here – a must-see post!, here, here, here & here), this townhouse was designed really for empty-nesters downsizing and wanting to maintain really high-end finishes. Here, the interior designer shares some insights:
“The Oxford at Timber Trails is a large ranch style townhome located in Western Springs, a suburb about 20 miles outside of Chicago. This townhouse was designed for someone who wants the ease of a smaller space without having to compromise on the quality and details of the finishes. The dramatic yet neutral color scheme made the perfect backdrop for multiple photo shoots and even a television commercial. The sophisticated and chic black, gold, and white elevate this dramatic home. We hope you enjoy this tour of the house we built to showcase creative and awe-inspiring design.” – Julie Howard, In-house designer for Timber Trails Development Company.
  Empty Nester Townhouse Design Ideas
The exterior of this beautiful townhouse features a grey brick. Brick is Sioux City Aztec White.
Hardie siding in Cobblestone.
Hardie Trim painted Linen – matched to Mastic aluminum sample #44.
Dimensional shingle asphalt roof with metal roof details in Pewter Gray.
Kitchen
Because this townhouse has another unit attached, the kitchen of this home does not have a window in the prep area. We used floating shelves over the kitchen sink to create an open and airy feeling where one usually has a window. If we would have carried the cabinets all around the boxy shaped room it would have felt very closed up and boring. The shelves add so much interest and depth to the kitchen.

Floating Shelves
“Some people will actually use kitchen floating shelves to hold their utility items and grab at them like a chef at a restaurant. I however, like to save that stuff for closed cabinets and use the floating shelves as an area to style like a bookcase. Using frames leaning and stacked up against each other creates a really nice look along side your more traditional kitchen items”. – Julie Howard.

Master Bathroom
“The master bath was inspired by the black and white marble Greek key design. For years I would look at the 4”x12” decorative accent piece at The Tile Shop and wonder how to incorporate it into a spec house. When designing this townhouse, it started to take on a black, white, and gold color scheme and I thought the Greek key would be perfect. Mudroom
“The mudroom of this house is actually a hallway that connects the bedrooms, the garage, and the laundry room. There is not a closed off area where mess can accumulate. We needed to make sure the mudroom had more than just hooks and a bench. That would get very messy to walk past every day. We had custom built-ins made that hide all the mess. We painted it black so that it felt like a large piece of furniture in a white hallway. The board and batten on the walls gives an architectural feel but also helps to protect the walls in a high traffic area”. – Julie Howard

What is a Transitional Kitchen?
Transitional is the most popular kitchen design in the National Kitchen + Bath Association’s 2019 kitchen design trends. In fact, 65% of kitchens designed in the past year were transitional, more than double the kitchens that were traditional, contemporary or farmhouse, according to Tricia Zack, Market Research Analyst at the NKBA.
Why are transitional kitchens so popular? And, perhaps more importantly, would this style fit your design aesthetic? Freshome asked Zack and John Starck, CEO and Owner of Showcase Kitchens in Manhasset, NY, to explain the features that define a transitional kitchen.

Clean and relaxed
“Transitional design offers the best of both worlds, blending the textures of traditional with the sleekness of contemporary design,” says Starck. “For kitchens, think geometric, clean and practical lines for the countertops, cabinetry, crown molding and other crafted elements.”
Starck says non-fussy is a key element of transitional kitchens. “Never would you include corbels or ornate appliques or other heavily decorative features typical of traditional kitchens,” he explains.

Colors
Since transitional kitchens often open to the living area, designers are opting for smooth features that blend in. What’s more, they often aim to achieve a light and airy effect. “Designers report using clean colors such as whites, grays, beiges, bones and blues,” Zack says. Those are good choices for now — and when homeowners decide to sell since neutral colors appeal to buyers.
Tumblr media
Cabinet drawers in abundance. Image courtesy of Showcase Kitchens.
Cabinets
In transitional kitchens, cabinets are usually a light or medium color in painted wood, wood grain or mixed materials. “Our report reveals that designers are using integrated storage with recessed panels, and doors are not as prevalent as drawers,” Zack says. Matte decorative hardware or integrated hardware are also traits of this design style.

Appliances
“White kitchens with stainless steel appliances are still king — with frequently contrasting island and perimeter cabinetry,” explains Starck. Also, expect to find fully-integrated French-door refrigerators in transitional kitchens. “Designers have told us there will either be an induction cooktop along with a wall oven and microwave, or a dual-fuel or gas range,” Zack says. Updraft hoods and standard-door dishwashers are other staples in this design.
Tumblr media

Countertops and backsplashes
“Marble countertops and even marble backsplashes work beautifully for transitional kitchens,” Starck says. Other popular features that define transitional kitchens include quartz and quartzite. “Designers say countertops are thick (1¼ inch) and are either traditional or they have waterfall edges,” Zack explains.
“Subway tile for backsplashes is still a favorite, but mosaics and glass tile in a variety of sizes work great, too,” Starck explains.

Sinks and faucets
“Popular sinks styles among designers include stainless steel single bowl or apron sinks,” Zack says.

Among faucets, brushed stainless steel finishes reign; matte, polished or satin finishes are also popular. However, there is no preference regarding faucet functionality. “Designers are selecting faucets that are motion-controlled, touch or even manual,” she says.

Flooring and lighting
“The flooring can be either tile or wood, typically high gloss, but it doesn’t have to be,” says Starck. Designers are using both hardwood and engineered wood plank, continuing the debate on using hardwood floors in kitchens and bathrooms. “The various types of large-format tile used in transitional kitchens include ceramic, porcelain and stone,” Zack says. “Some designers are also using luxury vinyl.”
Designers are incorporating a variety of lighting options in transitional kitchens. “This includes recessed lights and pendants and dimmer and traditional switches,” Zack says. Undercabinet lighting and interior cabinet lighting are also features of this kitchen style. And designers are more frequently adding motion sensors and keypads.
“Lighting, seating and hardware are areas where our clients have fun,” Starck says. “Contemporary, mid-century modern, industrial, glam and even traditional elements can blend successfully into a transitional kitchen.”

How to Create a Sleek and Modern Kitchen With White Appliances
You can create a sleek and modern look with white appliances in your kitchen. They can also be extremely versatile and affordable. You can find white appliances in a variety of styles, from modern to minimalist to traditional. Regardless of which style you choose, you’ll be pleased with the outcome. In addition, white appliances are very easy to maintain and can look great in any design.
Modern
For years, white kitchens were the stuff of Pinterest fantasies. However, white appliances have always been a different story. They conjure up images of starter apartments with high-gloss finishes, chipped enamel, and dials that need constant adjustment.
Minimalist
White and cream colors are the classic color schemes for minimalism in the kitchen. While it may be tempting to use vivid colors, it’s best to use neutral tones instead. Neutral tones can provide the look and feel of space, while adding depth. For example, you can opt for a dark wood flooring or terrazzo in a neutral shade. If you’re looking for a more striking effect, consider using plants in the kitchen.
Versatile
White appliances are a great way to mix and match color schemes in your kitchen. These appliances go well with just about any color and finish. If you want to use slate countertops or slate flooring, you will have to find an appliance to match.
Affordable
If you are looking for affordable white appliances for your kitchen, you will be pleased to know that there are many options available. You can buy new ranges and dishwashers, or you can rent a model from a reputable store. You can even buy these appliances online and have them delivered to your door quickly.
Clean
It’s important to clean white appliances in the kitchen on a regular basis. To get the best results, clean them when the burners are turned off and the cook surface is cool. You can also wipe down the inside of your appliances with a clean washcloth to remove any surface dirt. Doing this regularly will improve the longevity of your appliances, and ensure trouble-free service.
Stainless steel
When designing your kitchen, you can easily incorporate stainless steel appliances into the mix. These appliances look contemporary and minimalist, so they won’t detract from the creativity of your design. In addition, the white color of stainless steel won’t compete with the vibrant colors of your cabinets.
Off-white cabinets
If you have off-white cabinets in your kitchen, the next step is to find the right colors to complement them. Try using a gray or stone-like backsplash to create a soft contrast, or black for a more pronounced, sophisticated look. The good thing about off-white is that it goes well with just about any color, and brown tones can be added to the room for a cozy, welcoming feeling.
Brass
Choosing brass fixtures and appliances can bring a pop of color to an old kitchen. These vintage-inspired materials are re-entering the home design scene, and can provide subtle contrast with all-white appliances. Because they are so soft, they can be used as accents on their own or to offset the cooler tones of other items.
Green cabinets
Creating a kitchen with green cabinets is a great way to incorporate color into a kitchen with white appliances and other neutral colors. You can choose between light or dark green colors, patterned or textured. In addition, you can choose a countertop that compliments the color and style of the cabinets. White countertops are a classic choice, while black, grey, or concrete countertops will create a more contemporary look. You can also add wood accents to your green cabinets to add texture and personality.
Natural wood cabinetry
This kitchen combines modern white appliances with natural wood cabinetry. A white backsplash and beige subway tile complement the sleek cabinetry and appliances. A stainless steel vent hood and chrome knobs complement the look. Stainless steel is also an option for the kitchen sink.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which layout is best for your kitchen?
If there is enough space, an L-shaped layout with an island kitchen is best.
Are white kitchens out of style?
White kitchens can be a great choice for homeowners who want a modern design in their homes. Since 1980s designers started using white appliances and kitchen cabinets. White kitchens continue to be a favorite trend in interior designing.
Experts believe that the trend of all-white kitchens is over and homeowners are ready to try something new. Although white kitchens remain popular, more people are interested in brighter kitchens.
If you’re considering a white kitchen for your home, there’s no need to worry about it going out of style anytime soon. But it is important to keep in touch with the fact that trends change. You may be more comfortable staying in your home for a long time.
How do I plan a kitchen?
There are many choices whether you want to remodel an existing space and/or design a dream new kitchen.
Take some time to find inspiration online before you get started. Seek inspiration by looking at pictures of kitchens. Make notes about design ideas. With a pen, paper and a pencil, draw out where each element will be located.
Now think of ways to improve upon these spaces. What can you do to improve these spaces? What would you do differently? Ask someone who is an expert in your field to help you get creative.
Once you know what you want to achieve, it’s now time to start. Start with the basics. Get rid of all unnecessary clutter. Remove appliances that aren’t used often. Replace worn-out fixtures with new ones.
Next, take a look at areas of your kitchen that are too small. This can be as simple as looking for areas that are too small to store or have no countertops. You can think of ways to maximize these spaces. Perhaps you could turn them into wine cellars and pantries.
Lighting is an important consideration. Is there a particular spot that could use more light? Perhaps a wall sconce would help brighten up a dark corner.
After you’ve made your improvements list, it’s time to implement them!
Don’t worry if it’s not easy at first. Keep at it until you get it right. Don’t forget to enjoy it every day!

How to design a kitchen layout
There’s no perfect kitchen layout, but specific layouts work better for specific spaces. These are some ideas to help you design the kitchen layout that works best in your space.
Start with the essentials. The first step in determining what you have in your kitchen is to decide what can be sacrificed. You may not require a large oven or stove if you don’t cook a lot.
The traffic flow is important. Next, think about how your family uses the kitchen. Also consider how traffic flows through it. You will need to make sure there is enough space for everyone to move about freely, without bumping into one another.
Maximize storage. The third step of maximising storage is in the kitchen. This includes both food storage, and cookware storage. It is important to make sure everything is in its right place and easily accessible.
Your style should be incorporated. Incorporating your style into your kitchen layout is the fourth step. This includes everything from the cabinets and countertops to the flooring and appliances. Choose finishes and materials that reflect you style.
Partner with a professional. Work with a professional designer to design your kitchen. They will help you to create a layout that fits all of your needs.
