As far as speculation goes for what actually happened in the Ling Xi Caves in the PIDW-verse, one of the more well known theories is that the scene where Liu Qingge stabs himself in Shen Yuan's dreamscape IS the PIDW canon. And he did this in a moment of clarity while deviating so he could stop himself from killing Shen Jiu.

If we're running with this, doesn't that mean that not one, but TWO peak lords died for Shen Jiu? Died trying to save him?

No wonder Shen Jiu was absolutely devastated when he saw Yue Qingyuan's broken sword and after whatever happened in the Ling Xi Caves. Even Shang Qinghua said that Shen Jiu would "abandon himself to despair", and that he'll never be free of it for the rest of his life.

Looks like Luo Bingge isn't the only one from PIDW with a harem, he totally gets it from his shizun shdgjhs

Okay so, given the common fanon of Shen Jiu being a bastard child of the Qiu family and the idea of Shen Yuan's siblings being alternate versions of PIDW charecters, consider this idea; Shen Yuans siblings as alternative versions of Qiu Jianluo, Yue Qingyuan and Qiu Haitang. Qiu Haitang comes onto the scene at Jinlan city, and Shen Yuan is struck with the absolute horror of seeing his sisters face for the first time in years... accusing him of murder.

hate it when ppl are like "shen jiu DID have chances at happiness!! he just didn't take them!!" bc... no he didnt? he was a character in a book who was created to be a jealous asshole, no chance at happiness he ever had was actually real because if he'd been happy he couldn't have fulfilled his role in the story

none of the characters in PIDW actually had free will, their actions were dictated by what the book's audience wanted because airplane was writing it to pay rent

of course he didn't take any chances at happiness, he was written to be a miserable bastard in order to fulfill his role as an antagonist, he couldn't be happy in that story because then he wouldn't have done what was needed to move the plot along

airplane outright states that the reason he wasn't a more complex character in PIDW was because when he tried to hint at there being more to shen jiu his readers hated it, so he stopped and just made him one dimensional

The change in shen jiu’s fate at binghe’s hands in the donghua was almost definitely done for censorship/rating reasons (can’t blame them, the novel version is… grisly, to say the least) but the pickle jar really is such a clever idea. The concept of peerless cucumber vs pickled shen jiu, that shen yuan is a version of sqq without the bitterness and envy the original had been stewing in for years, the implication that shen yuan’s sqq is the sort of teacher shen jiu might have been if his life had been different, really is so subtle and delicious from a character exploration standpoint. Plus it means the donghua team didnt have to figure out how to animate the limbless stick corpse with their terrible budget and limited technical skills thank god
