everything about baywatch is so wild to me that i have to convey it in the form of a timeline
1989: baywatch premieres as a television movie, panic at malibu pier.  the unedited version of the film contains random topless ladies who contribute nothing to the plot, but exist to make video store rentals lucrative
also 1989: baywatch season one premieres on nbc.  each episode contains several montages of beach stock footage and slow motion lifeguard running set to music to pad the runtime.  one of the lead actors is named billy warlock, the coolest name that will ever be
1990: after one season, nbc cancels baywatch.  screenwriter lee goldberg would later say of the show, “baywatch should never have been a series. lifeguards dive into the water and rescue people. so what? one producer said, 'you know, i can come up with stories for the home shopping network, and i can't come up with stories for this show.”
1992: david hasselhoff believes in baywatch so much that he has the series picked up for syndication.  season two premieres with a significantly smaller budget, and as such product placement is rampant and all shots filmed must be used, regardless of visible errors.  the show now has the iconic theme song “i’ll be ready”
also 1992: the baywatch/gilligan’s island crossover episode “now sit right back and you’ll hear a tale” premieres.  gilligan and mary ann are the only gilligan’s island characters to appear in the crossover
1993: season three of baywatch premieres, now with pamela anderson as a cast member.  her character cj was first introduced playing an alto saxophone at the side of a river where mitch buchannon was searching for gold buried by his deceased prospector uncle
also 1993: baywatch teamed up with sega to release “lifeguard potential,” a water safety psa for uk children hosted by chris evans, but not the chris evans of marvel fame
1994: david hasselhoff performs a pay per view concert in atlantic city meant to help his singing career with united states audiences.  during the concert, hasselhoff goes backstage to find donald trump watching the oj simpson car chase, broadcasting live, on television.  as a result of approximately 90 million people watching the car chase, the concert was a 1.5 million dollar loss
1995: baywatch nights premieres.  originally envisioned by david hasselhoff as a detective show completely separate from baywatch, the show ended up as a baywatch spinoff with mitch buchannon and garner ellerbee starting up a detective agency along with angie harmon of later Law & Order fame.  the show was called nights because the detective agency was located above a club called nights, yet advertising for the show stated mitch was a “lifeguard by day and detective by night,” despite the majority of season one taking place in the day
also 1995: baywatch the movie: forbidden paradise is released on video
1996: the baywatch episode “baywatch angels” airs.  in this episode, the lifeguards are being targeted with trip wire bombs and are saved by charlie’s angels.  except instead of actually getting the charlie’s angels actresses, it’s three female baywatch cast members dressed up as the charlie’s angels
1997: baywatch nights season two premieres.  the show is now about mitch as a paranormal investigator, x-files style, and is widely panned as ridiculous.  which, in fairness, it is, but original baywatch had ghost possessions and alien abductions so it’s not like this is without precedent.  despite season one of baywatch nights having a psychic character, she inexplicably never appears in any of the paranormal episodes
also 1997: baywatch nights is cancelled
1998: baywatch: white thunder at glacier bay premieres direct to video
also 1998: david hasselhoff stars as nick fury in the television movie nick fury: agent of shield.  other roles in the film are played by minor baywatch and baywatch nights actors, such as lisa rinna as contessa val allegra de fontaine, sandra hess as andrea von strucker, and neil roberts as alexander pierce.  the movie was intended to lead into a nick fury television series.  it did not succeed.
1999: baywatch moves filming to hawaii due to rising production costs in los angeles.  the show is now branded as baywatch: hawaii.
2001: baywatch is cancelled again, this time for good.  so far.
also 2001: star trek: enterprise premieres.  due to declining viewership of preceding star trek franchises, enterprise seeks a new viewing demographic: baywatch fans.  they do this by having scenes in nearly every episode where the cast strips down to their underwear and rubs ‘decontamination gel’ on each other after visiting alien planets.  this does not succeed in drawing any new viewers in, as internet porn is readily available by this point
2003: the made for television movie baywatch: hawaiian wedding premieres
2017: baywatch, starring dwayne johnson and zac efron, premieres in theaters.  dwayne johnson is playing mitch buchannon and at one point has a scene with david hasselhoff, who is also playing mitch buchannon, because why not
there’s just no detailing all the ridiculousness and twists and turns of this history of baywatch.  it was the most watched show of all time and the longest running show to never be nominated for an emmy.  to this day, hasselhoff insists that baywatch wasn’t about sex.  i’ve tried my best here but i’d need to include every single episode to really demonstrate how absurd it all was.  everyone go watch baywatching.

November 21
Yesterday Katelyn called to see if I wanted to hang out. Katelyn is the almost 22-year-old who I call my adopted niece but she’s something more than that. I lived with K and her mom from the time K was 18 months old until she was four-and-a-half so I was her de facto other mom. I know it’s just the slightest approximation of what parenting must feel like but I treasure the memory of her being satisfied with coming to me if Mom wasn’t available. Three-year-old K running towards me when I showed up to pick her up from daycare. The memory of the Christmas when all K wanted from Santa was to see her father and her mother and I couldn’t make that happen – talk about powerlessness. Watching her sing at her high school variety show remembering how I’d been too terrified to sing in front of people…
She inherited some things from me – her opinions and eagerness to share them is probably the big one, but she also, somehow, has come to love Def Leppard (I suspect that’s her boyfriend’s influence). You already know how Def Leppard introduced me to my first boyfriend. I can tell you exactly where I was and who I was with when I heard about the car accident that ultimately took Rick Allen’s arm. I remember that someone who worked at a music store called me to tell me Steve Clarke had died. Def Leppard was my third concert (1st: Asia; 2nd: Stray Cats) – I still can’t believe Mom let me go with Allen and some of his friends at 15. Some people have made-up imaginary friends – mine were real people.
I went up to see K at her mom’s place after work (Kate’s mom and her husband of a year and a week are still on their delayed honeymoon in Tennessee) and we talked about all kinds of things. She said something about Def Leppard touring with Motley Crue, which led me to the Crue documentary I just watched on Netflix over the weekend. I was a fan – saw them open for Ozzy once; had a poster on my ceiling for a while – but the milestones in their lives were vague memories. Of course Tommy was married to Heather Locklear and Vince committed vehicular manslaughter, but that was most of what I knew.
The documentary is an unflinching portrait of the toll drugs took on the band – specifically Nikki Sixx – but that’s not the part that really got to me. I know how addiction works. I had to stop the movie to Google what happened to Vince Neil’s daughter after her cancer diagnosis, which paid off as the next scene opened on her dead four-year-old body laying in the hospital bed. So now I’m having feelings about poor Vince losing his daughter after killing his friend how many years after the fact?
On the way home, after playing a Def Leppard song, the DJ mentioned the tour with Crue and I had to call Katelyn. We are definitely going, I assured her, now that I have even more emotions tied up with these people. I am definitely not thinking about the fact that “Crue called their friends in Def Leppard” to arrange the tour because I assume that means the Leps were also hard partiers and I’d rather not consider all the sordid debauchery that follows along. (Poison is also on the bill, and we’re all down with Bret since Rock of Love. Don’t threaten me with a good time!)
K and I also watched Mean Girls, which I had never seen, and I’m always happy to patch up a hole in my cultural reference knowledge. “Her hair is so big because it’s full of secrets” is everything. Feel free to welcome me to fifteen years ago.
I have to believe the increased meds dosage is making a difference. Tuesday alone I scheduled a doctor’s appointment (colorectal), an ultrasound (thyroid), a dinner/movie date with a friend, a massage, an eye exam, and a dentist’s appointment AND I enrolled for supplemental vision insurance. It seems like a reasonable amount to accomplish in one day, but I’d been putting off some of these appointments for months. Why is it so hard to pick up the phone and call someone? I will never be able to explain it. Trust me – I wish I could help people understand! The best I can do is recognize that I’m functioning more effectively and keep track of what I’m doing that’s different.
Yesterday I committed to flying to Boston to see a friend get married on New Year’s Eve. “Black tie optional”? Hell yeah I want to go hang out in that hotel and see that venue that my amazing friend and her intended are having a black-tie optional shin-dig in! I can’t imagine my lifestyle ever affording me such luxurious splurges on the regular so I need to take advantage of the opportunities when they manifest. Besides, I already have a dress that I got for a black-tie New Year’s Even anniversary party a few years ago; wearing it a second time makes it an even better value! (We don’t discuss how much money I ultimately spend on a wrap and statement earrings.) (Ack! I need to make an appointment with Katelyn for my hair!)
I haven’t seen Karen (the friend getting married) in FIVE years, which seems impossible, but there it is. Karen is one of my original gang of Webpeeps – Webpepes 1.0! Most of us met on a news aggregate website, got to know each other in the forum (4um elites represent), and created a new bulletin board to hang out in. At our peak we had about 150 members but the core group was about 40, and I’ve had the pleasure of meeting at least 30 of us in meatspace.
The first time I met Karen (GreenBeans/GB) was at her then husband’s 30TH (?) birthday party. Rider (PsiDefect), Tim (GasMasher), and I drove my car up to Boston from Philly (Tim and I drove up from MD) to surprise this dude we’d never met, and that cemented my friendship with both Karen and Ted (Law). Their marriage broke up some time ago, which I learned the weekend she and I got together in Orlando with Catrina (CatWritr) and CJ (Hajen). Which was somehow five full years ago.
The first time I met ANY of these nerds was…I don’t even know how long ago at the original Farkoasterfest. I lived with Katelyn and Vanessa at the time and V straight up took pictures of Rider and his license plate when he pulled up to scoop me and head out to Sandusky, OH. I do know I was working at SSA and it was relatively early in my tenure, so early-2000s? It was also probably the first time I spent an entire weekend with people not in recovery since I’d gotten clean. Several hundred miles away with nearly perfect strangers – who thought that was a good idea?
It turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Some of the people I met that weekend and after are straight up some of my closest friends. It was my first experience making friends as an adult, which is startlingly difficult to do. My first group of friends that didn’t start in our hometown or on campus or in recovery – people I connected with in a realm where all we had was the words on the screen and our wit.
Places I’ve since hung out with these people include Seattle twice, Cedar Point one or two more times, Northern VA, DC, PA, and Toledo. I’ve seen at least three couples wed and have almost ten kids between them. I dated the guy in Toledo for a few years. I flew out to Seattle for Andrea (BigOrangeCat/TheOtherAndrea)’s 40th birthday party and to visit her in the hospital before she died. We helped Amy (Hisey) mourn the loss of her nearly full-term daughter. We helped Joe (ThedNeedles) deal with his ex keeping his son away from him – some of his helped him with legal aid. We watched each other’s kids grow up and have kids of their own. Norm (Zorgon) just emailed to let me know he was in town (-ish –northern DC suburb) and wanted to connect but was laden with germs – we get together for a meal very few years when work brings him this way. Never let anyone tell you your online friends don’t count.
(Logging back in to the old bulletin board to count heads gifted me with a video of Mike (BitZero) (father of FarKoasterFest) smashing up some obsolete Fark hardware. Good times!)
I reached out to CJ and Cat to see if either one was planning on coming to the wedding to offer the other side of the king-sized bed I’ll be sleeping in in Boston and I’m glad I did. CJ’s got a handful of kids so money is always a concern and I’m paying for the room whether I’m alone or with someone else. We’ll be FaceTiming Cat at midnight and maybe during the ceremony too.
In fact, I’ve been suspiciously functional this week. Monday was meh, but since then I’ve had three good, productive days in a row. I have no specific plans tonight so I could go to a meeting, or I could go home and see if any of this momentum can be channeled into house projects. Coming up with a fictional framing device has given me the opportunity to figuratively walk myself through the necessary steps to get started. So whatever comes of this writing exercise, it’s been worth doing.

Projection Room: a welcome return to the Renata... five years later
Tumblr media
“If Lost Highway, Lost In Translation and Exterminating Angel were to procreate, this would be their bastard offspring”.
Director Ed Greenberg on The Renata Road
At the start of 2017, TheJackSmit.com (as we were known back then, well before the days of radio, podcasts or YouTube) partnered with local production company Beyond the Bar to do a feature on their crowdfunded thriller The Renata Road, a movie which has some serious promise with a lot of great homegrown talent, as well as the feature film debut of former TV quizzer turned actor CJ de Mooi - it earned a 5 star review from us, as well as becoming the honorary Film of the Year alongside Dunkirk, namely because of what it did as a 2 hour film made independently of any studio in the UK.
Since that review though, we haven’t had much in the way of updates, or even screenings (IMDB have falsely put the film down as a January 2017, then a January 2021 release, and I am putting this fact in print as my way of of getting them to correct it and verify it)- it truly has been a long road to getting the film out to a wider audience than just the invited press, Kickstarter backers, and those who have learned about the film over the years through this blog. But all that changed on Monday, and to quote D:REAM, things can only get better. Following a long awaited reunion over Odeon’s Screen Unseen showing that evening, the film’s director (and someone who has become a firm friend and collaborator over the last few years in and out of the industry) Ed Greenberg texted me with some big news, which was backed up with a tweet from CJ. And this is something I have been dying to report since that first showing to the film’s backers on that cold Monday night in Lytham.
The Renata Road is on the festival circuit at last.
As it stands, the NewBorn festival in Berlin has selected it as a semi-finalist, and the next 12 months are looking incredibly promising with a submission list in double figures. I obviously have to be very careful about what I can reveal, as I’ve seen the production of a film like this first hand: this is the difficult bit. Making a film is all good, but getting it out there is easier said than done as the festival circuit can be brutal. But it’s off to a delayed, yet very encouraging start. As ever, we will update you all on the latest across our content - including The Journal, Talking Smit About Film and here on the blog - but it will be sooner rather than later before this film is finally unleashed. Believe me, it will be worth the wait. So on behalf of myself and the entire TheJackSmit Ventures team, congratulations Roadies. Now the real fun begins.

What I’m Watching In The Second Season Of DWTCS
The UFC found a bit of a hit through Dana White's Tuesday Night Contenders Series. It was basically in so many words its own regional promotion, running through the summer there were five fights a week with a winner (or two and in some cases three) getting contracts into the UFC. It worked to restock the shelves at the higher weight classes (Julian Marquez and Karl Roberson had successful debuts, Mike Rodriguez has some upside plus they got two HWs) while giving us a bantamweight or two to get giddy about. In many ways it stripped away the silliness of Lookin' For A Fight and gave us the nitty gritty of seeing a few well known regional guys plus some under the radar prospects getting an opportunity to showcase their stuff.
It's returning this summer across two different continents; a version in the States rumored to be projected for a TV run and a Brazilian version which is apparently going to be pre-taped on Fight Pass. Either way, the format is returning and the awesome folks at MMA-Today have amassed a crazy amount of names, fights and dates. You can take a peek at it yourself here (https://mma-today.com/complete-guide-dana-whites-tuesday-night-contender-series-season-2). Taking a curious little gander at what we've got so far, here's some of the fights I'm really excited to take a look at:
Nick Newell vs TBA
The concept of Nick Newell fighting in the UFC seems hard to believe even at this current point in time. Newell's an inspirational story but also a fighter who was twice (maybe more?) sent home from TUF try outs and had to basically fight his way up the ranks from regional AXS shows to an NBC spot on WSOF. The UFC has always been risk averse when it comes to signings and Newell is a risky venture. Whether he's UFC quality enough is irrelevant compared to whether he can be presented to the UFC audience/sponsors/mainstream TVs in a fair manner. Newell is not a charity case; he's a good fighter worthy of at least this opportunity. I'm mostly curious to see who they match him up with and whether or not it's a lay up or a serious regional lightweight. By this point we know there's no shortage of good lightweights out there looking for work.
Greg Hardy vs Brandon Sayles
Okay. I totally understand the agita and the emotion behind seeing Greg Hardy wearing UFC gloves and getting ready to fight for the DWTCS. Here's the reality though; somebody ultimately was going to take a chance on Greg Hardy. This is a guy who will walk in the door as one of the best athletes in any organization he's involved in. He's simply far too talented and far too controversial to not get this opportunity. I lived through the Greg Hardy saga in 2015 as a Cowboys fan and he's everything they say and then some be it positively or negatively. It's honorable to not want questionable characters in the fine sport of mixed martial arts but to deny the correlation between bad characters and combat sports is a bad idea. The Contender Series, if you're going to take a chance on a Greg Hardy type, is the place to do it. If he works out then you've at least had him test himself vs a pretty decent regional big dude before signing him and you can dip your toe into the waters of public backlash without getting the full assortment. If he loses? You milked his name value to find a HW and pop a number.
Jordan Espinosa vs Riley Dutro
The UFC brought Jordan Espinosa in thinking that he'd be a good filler for Jon Dodson teammate and Jackson-Wink fighter Nick Urso. Espinosa left no doubt who the better fighter was as he dominated Dutro en route to a first round submission win. Espinosa didn't get a shot (likely due to his so so record) but he's getting a second shot to earn a spot. He'ss one of those dudes who carries a journeyman style record at 12-5 but features some good names to suggest he is a UFC quality type of fighter. Wins over CJ Hamilton (another DWTCS guy), the aforementioned Urso and previous TUF 18 prospect Rafael De Freitas. Riley Dutro is riding a seven fight winning streak with 4 straight finishes with some familiar names like Darren Uyenoyama and Yusaku Nakamura.
Maki Pitolo vs. Chibwikem Onyenegecha
So as someone who watches way way too much of Victory FC, I've seen my fair share of Maki Pitolo. He reminds me a bit of a Frank Camacho type fighter; the sort of brawler who can do a little bit of everything and have some exciting fights. I thought Pitolo was for sure on his way to the UFC but then he lost two straight in humiliating fashion to Kassuis Kayne (who he had previously swept) and regional gatekeeper Dakota Cochrane. The tongue twister-y Chibwikem Onyenegecha is an undefeated prospect who is the top protege of former UFC fighter Matt Grice, so much so in fact that Grice helped dude move from Oakland to Oklahoma. He's coming off a brutal finish in LFA.
Kennedy Nzechukwu vs Dennis Bryant
The UFC really wanted to sign Kennedy Nzechukwu going into his first DWTCS appearance. He's a big athletic dude who trains with some UFC quality dudes like Damon Jackson, Stephen Peterson and Alonzo Menifield. His story is unique; an immigrant from Nigeria who fights to care for his mother who is battling Lou Gherig's disease. The problem was he simply didn't perform well enough to actually get a deal from the organization. Now perhaps that's a fault of matchmaking since Anton Berzin was a TUF castmate and had double the experience of Kenneddy Nzechukwu, all in all painting the picture of a dude who survived an opportunity that maybe wasn't ideal for him. He's had a fight since and gets a rebound chance on the second season against a dude who is essentially a filler name. Dennis Bryant is straight out of Alaska Fighting Championship so we made it, fellas.
Antonina Shevchenko vs. Silvana Gómez Juárez
This really doesn't have much to do with Silvana who I don't know a ton about. Instead it has to do with Antonina who is almost a lock to be signed unless she has a total stinker. 125 lbs could use more faces and unlike anybody else, Antonina has some hype coming into the UFC. I don't expect her to be as good as her sister (and competing in the same division as Valentina caps her upside tremendously) but she absolutely has a chance to make the roster with a win.
Juan Adams vs Shawn Teed
I mean let's be fair here; these are big men. Every big man fight on Dana White's Tuesday Night Contenders Series is sort of kind of a big deal given how thin the HW division remains. As such, a fight between Ricardo Almeida product Shawn Teed and LFA's Juan Adams is a fight where the winner stands a better chance at getting a contract over a fight between two great welterweights.
Oscar Cota vs Greg Rabello
One thing the Dana White Tuesday Night Contenders Series spoke openly about was wanting to find a way to incorporate not just American fighters into the mix. Oscar Cota is an interesting attempt to dig into some different areas to find a fighter. Sporting a 10-1 record, Cota's the ultra rare Mexican HW and he was one of the first big names added to the second season. He gets a REALLY tough matchup vs Greg Rabello ho is the sort of tried and tested regional level doughy guy who competed on the first season of the Contenders Series.

Gluten: Eat it or Leave it?
Gluten has been in the human diet for thousands of years, yet remains one of the most confusing and frustrating dietary topics in modern nutrition. Should you eat it or avoid it? Is a “gluten-free” diet really better for you or is it just the latest diet fad? Well, that depends….and this is what I’ll discuss today.
 What is gluten?
Gluten is the name of the storage proteins found in the seeds (grains) of grass, and there are over 1,000 sub-fractions which have been identified. Yes, all grains contain gluten, because these proteins, along with starch in the endosperm, are necessary to help nourish a germinating seed.
And yet, only one sub-fraction of gluten, alpha-gliadin, is considered to be gluten when it comes to identifying the gluten-containing grains in the US. By this definition, only wheat, barley, rye, spelt, and triticale are on the list.
But this is incomplete. Other sub-fractions of gluten are found in oats, rice, corn, and millet, but since they don’t contain alpha-gliadin, they are not on the list of gluten containing grains. This is not scientifically sound and misleads consumers.
What does the “gluten-free” label really mean?
The “gluten-free” label is an interesting label. Although there are over 1,000 sub-fractions of gluten, only one sub-fraction matters in the current regulations – alpha-gliadin. When it comes to labeling, only items which DO NOT contain wheat, barley, rye, spelt, and triticale will carry the “gluten-free” label.
However, knowing that gluten includes many other proteins in many other grains, a more accurate description of the current “gluten-free” label would be “alpha-gliadin-free”. It is worth discussing the idea of labeling products as “grain-free” vs. “gluten-free”, since the definition of “gluten-free” remains limited.
Why does gluten in the diet matter?
Gluten is a protein, so it can elicit an immune response in the body, and this can have serious consequences on our health. It depends on genetic, environmental, and lifestyle components for each individual, but it is estimated that up to a third of the population has some sort of negative response to gluten. Consuming gluten may not be in your best interest for general health and may even be life threatening. Having an accurate understanding of how you react to gluten is important for protecting health.
How do I know if gluten might be a problem?
If gluten is a problem for you, it is defined as either an allergy or a sensitivity. There are four categories of gluten reactions:
 1.     Allergy
2.     Celiac Disease
3.     Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity
4.     Non-immune malabsorption Syndrome
The first category is a traditional allergy to wheat. This is determined by a blood test or the traditional allergy skin prick, developed in the 1950’s. A traditional allergy to wheat will trigger a histamine immune response known as IgE and is easily detected. This is similar to a peanut allergy.
The other three categories are not allergies because they will not elicit an IgE response. Instead, other immune responses occur, including antibody production, and may involve IgA(lungs and intestine), IgG (systemic), and IgM (initial) responses. These are known as gluten sensitivities and are the major source of gluten-related disorders.
The most familiar category of gluten sensitivity is specific to the intestinal tract and the alpha-gliadin sub-fraction. This is known as Celiac disease, a life threatening autoimmune disorder. This can produce bloating, abdominal pain, irritable bowel, weight gain, malabsorption of nutrients, intestinal lesions, villous atrophy, and internal bleeding. It is generally diagnosed by the presence of antibodies to alpha-gliadin and a positive test for transglutaminase 2 (IgG). But sometimes Celiac is so subtle in its course that it isn’t correctly diagnosed until there is extensive and irreversible damage to the intestinal tract and other organs, including the liver, brain, and thyroid.  It has been shown that it can take up to eleven years to receive a correct diagnosis.1,2
Why the difficulty? Because gluten sensitivity isn’t reliably specific to alpha-gliadin IgG test. Some Celiac patients will never test positive for antibodies to alpha-gliadin using the IgG fraction, yet their intestines will exhibit the end stage damage seen in those with antibodies to alpha-gliadin. They know they feel better when not consuming gluten, but their blood work testing for IgG responses doesn’t indicate a problem.
Despite the possibility of no IgG antibodies, alpha-gliadin reaction is clearly the “gateway” to understanding gluten sensitivity, as it is the most likely to be identified based on current laboratory testing. As more research is conducted, though, we are learning that people who tend to react to the alpha-gliadin commonly also react to the other sub-fractions of gluten at some level. And this creates inflammation not only in the gut but also outside of the gut, begging a deeper understanding of gluten sensitivity and other immune responses.
Gluten sensitivity really is an autoimmune disease with diverse manifestations, meaning it may produce symptoms outside of the intestinal tract.3 And this brings us to the next type of reaction: Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity. It can manifest as joint pain, arthritis, brain fog, ataxia, neuropathy, headaches (migraines), depression, eczema, skin rashes, carpel tunnel, Hashimoto’s thyroid disease, Schizophrenia, anxiety, ADHD, autism, hair loss, weakened vessel walls, and liver cirrhosis.3-13 Symptoms that manifest outside of the intestinal tract have been less likely to be recognized and diagnosed as being related to gluten since they may produce responses with IgA and IgM as opposed to IgG, and patients can suffer for years before understanding the role of gluten in producing these inflammatory responses and problems.
The last type of sensitivity is identified as Non-Immune Malabsorption Syndrome and occurs because gluten sensitivity has destroyed the villi lining the intestinal wall responsible for nutrient absorption. This may be the only sign of a gluten intolerance.
How can you test for gluten sensitivity?
The least expensive and easiest way to test your sensitivity to gluten is to COMPLETELY avoid it for at least two weeks and then see how you feel. This refers to avoiding alpha-gliadin, so it would be anything containing wheat, barley, or rye. After two weeks, you can reintroduce these grains and see how you feel. This can be pretty dramatic for some people. For others it can be subtle, but the longer you abstain, the better you feel. The gold-standard for trying this is six months, because some patients have really inflamed systems that need to heal from other infections and toxins, including mold and glyphosates from pesticides which can produce symptoms similar to gluten sensitivity. Those who find they’re sensitive may want to go a step further and eliminate all grains from the diet in order to truly assess their ability to optimize their health.
Eliminating gluten becomes easier with practice, but it may initially feel like there’s a lack of options for eating. Resist the temptation to buy processed “gluten-free” products as these often contain hydrogenated oils and sugars and are no better for you than other processed foods. There are some options for pasta and bread products without gluten, but try to break the bread and pasta habit altogether and substitute other foods. Make “gluten-free” bread or pasta an occasional food rather than a staple food since many of these can raise your blood sugar substantially.
The best way to understand your gluten tolerance is to combine an elimination diet with blood and DNA testing. Using only a blood tests to determine gluten tolerance is limited because it will only analyze immune response related to IgG, IgA, IgE, and IgM pathways known as the T Helper 2 response (TH2). It will not account for those whose sensitivity takes the T Helper 1 pathway (TH1), which will react to gluten as a toxin and try to get rid of it, producing inflammatory damage but no Ig cell response. Both pathways can lead to autoimmunity but only one will be detected by the blood test. This is where DNA testing can be helpful.
 1.     DNA:
Checking for the HLA DQ on chromosome 6. There are two genes but lots of different alleles which present on the genes. The Celiac variant markers are DQ 2, DQ 2.5, and/or the HLA DQ8 genes. The other markers, which are not indicative of Celiac but gluten sensitivity, are the DQ1 or DQ3 genotype patterns, and these are associated with neurological symptoms such as depression, neuropathy, Schizophrenia, arthritis, anxiety.  Not all DNA tests will go beyond the DQ2 and DQ 8 SNP’s related to Celiac. The DQ1 and DQ3 may also need to be tested. The full test is available at www.glutenfreesociety.org
 2.    Blood Test
Array 3 from Cyrex Labs. This test looks for 12 different peptides to gluten, not just the gliadin fraction that is the traditional lab test. More information can be found at www.cyrexlabs.com

Check out our new NFL mock draft, right here
Tumblr media
D’Andre Swift is RB most likely to be a first-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Georgia’s D’Andre Swift is the only ball carrier worth a first-round pick.
aThe 2020 NFL Draft is less than two weeks away. And it can’t get here soon enough.
The weekly mock drafts are driving me to delirium. How so, you ask? This week’s mock draft features a running back in the first round. The nerve.
But seriously, a lot of the first round feels firmed up. That might be the case because less news than ever is getting out following the cancellation of pro day visits.
Of course, that all means nothing is firmed up. Well, except the top two picks. Here’s this week’s look at how things could shake out:
1. Cincinnati Bengals: Joe Burrow, QB, LSU
Burrow’s home in Athens County, Ohio, is about three miles from Cincinnati. That means he is essentially going home to Cincinnati, making it almost a Hollywood script.
“If I happen to be the first pick this year, I’m coming back home,” Burrow recently said on Shaquille O’Neal’s The Big Podcast. “And I think that’ll make a lot of people feel a lot better.”
2. Washington: Chase Young, DE, Ohio State
There was a report recently that teams picking outside the top three haven’t even bothered to reach out to Young. It makes sense considering there isn’t a chance he falls outside the top three. In fact, it would be a shock to see him not go to Washington. The jerseys should already be printed up.
3. Detroit Lions: Jeff Okudah, CB, Ohio State
Is this selection starting to be locked in as much as the first two picks? Unless Detroit trades down to a team wanting a quarterback, it kinda feels that way. Okudah is the consensus best cornerback in the draft, and one of the top five prospects available. Not only does he start immediately on a Detroit team desperate for secondary help, but he should enter the season as the Defensive Rookie of the Year favorite.
4. New York Giants: Tristan Wirfs, OT, Iowa
Should the Giants take an offensive tackle or Clemson super defender Isaiah Simmons? I’m still stuck on an offensive tackle for the Giants. Wirfs is a player who could get looked at for either side of the line in New York and start wherever he fits best.
5. Miami Dolphins: Justin Herbert, QB, Oregon
We’ll see what happens over the next two weeks, but it seems like more people have the Dolphins taking Herbert than Tua Tagovailoa at this point. It’s one of the more fascinating late developments in this draft season and will likely go down to the wire.
6. Los Angeles Chargers: Tua Tagovailoa, QB, Alabama
Tagovailoa had yet another round of positive injury reports recently, but teams still have to be worried a little bit. They may not be concerned enough to knock Tagovailoa out of the top 10, though they could cause him to be the third quarterback drafted.
7. Carolina Panthers: Derrick Brown, DT, Auburn
For much of this draft process, the Panthers have been associated with Brown. For good reason, too. The Panthers last season finished 29th in the NFL in rushing yards allowed, and last in rushing yards per attempt. Add the loss of linebacker Luke Kuechly onto that, and Carolina has a big problem. Brown could remedy the team’s run defense issues, and give Carolina a player who can create pressure up the middle. That’s why he gets the nod over Clemson’s Isaiah Simmons. For now.
8. Arizona Cardinals: Jedrick Wills, OT, Alabama
In our SB Nation NFL writers’ mock draft, this pick ended up being Oklahoma wide receiver CeeDee Lamb. While there are fun built-in storylines of Lamb playing with former college teammate Kyler Murray, a blocker with this pick just makes more sense to me. Wills locked the right tackle spot down for Alabama the past two seasons and is NFL ready, particularly in terms of run blocking. He needs to fix up little parts of his game — namely, blocking inside rush moves — but he can help keep Murray’s pocket clean.
9. Jacksonville Jaguars: Isaiah Simmons, LB, Clemson
Do the Jaguars actually need Simmons after signing former Cleveland Browns linebacker Joe Schobert to a five-year deal? Sort of. Don’t forget, Simmons is a positionally vague player. He’s just as effective dropping in coverage as he is coming up and stopping the run. When Jacksonville took defensive end Josh Allen in last year’s draft, they proved they’re willing to go best player available over needs. This year’s version could be Simmons.
10. Cleveland Browns: Mekhi Becton, OT, Louisville
I would say this is a “run to the podium” pick for the Browns, but there will be no podiums this year. Maybe general manager Andrew Berry will break his keyboard after typing M-E-K-H-I B-E-C-T-O-N so fast. Still, I can’t shake the notion the Browns might want to trade down for some reason.
11. New York Jets: Andrew Thomas, OT, Georgia
The ongoing question about the Jets continues: wide receiver or offensive tackle? Offensive tackle or wide receiver? My choice is always the offensive tackle. We all know by now how deep the wide receiver class is this year. The Jets can still get a starting wide receiver with the 48th pick. The same usually can’t be said for an offensive tackle.
12. Las Vegas Raiders: CeeDee Lamb, WR, Oklahoma
“We don’t have enough outside speed,” Raiders general manager Mike Mayock said at the Senior Bowl this year. He also added, generally, that the wide receiver position has to get better for the Raiders. Lamb doesn’t have the pure speed like Henry Ruggs III of Alabama, but it’s more than good enough when you combine it with his ability to slip out of tackles.
13. San Francisco 49ers (via Indianapolis Colts): Jerry Jeudy, WR, Alabama
TERRIBLE SPORTS WRITING ALERT: Things went pretty well for the 49ers the last time they took a Jerry in the draft. The year was 1985, and the player was Jerry Rice. I think you know the rest of this story, nyuk nyuk nyuk.
Someone, please, fast forward life to April 23 already.
14. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Josh Jones, OT, Houston
Yes, this is the fifth offensive tackle off the board within the first 14 picks. But offensive tackle is a position we’ve seen overdrafted in the past. Remember last year when the Texans used the 23rd pick on Tytus Howard of Alabama State? Or the Raiders in 2018 taking Kolton Miller 15th? Hopefully Jones works out if he’s drafted this highly — and his athletic profile suggests he might — but getting protection for Tom Brady is critical.
15. Denver Broncos: Henry Ruggs III, WR, Alabama
Ruggs has been the pick for the Broncos countless times at this point. He was even the pick by Scotty Payne of Mile High Report in the writers’ mock draft. I sort of want to spend the next week poking holes in the Ruggs to Denver connection.
16. Atlanta Falcons: Javon Kinlaw, DT, South Carolina
The Falcons would be ecstatic to see Kinlaw still available with the No. 16 pick. Arguably one of the draft’s 10 best players, Kinlaw is a physical freak who can be used to rush the passer from the inside. He has length to bat down passes and enough athleticism to kick outside at times.
17. Dallas Cowboys: Xavier McKinney, S, Alabama
The Dallas secondary needs some help. That’s why McKinney gets the nod over a pass rusher. McKinney can play safety and cornerback, and is comfortable doing both. Starting two years at Alabama, McKinney should be able to adjust quickly to the NFL. While he can play single- or two-high safety, he works in the box and will cover the slot.
18. Miami Dolphins (via Pittsburgh Steelers): K’Lavon Chaisson, Edge, LSU
Ever since the Dolphins wasted a first-round pick on Charles Harris in 2017, the team has been lacking an outside pass rusher. Bringing in Shaq Lawson and Emmanuel Ogbah was smart, but the Dolphins could still use a rush specialist like Chaisson.
19. Las Vegas Raiders (via Chicago Bears): CJ Henderson, CB, Florida
Should the Raiders land a wide receiver with their first pick, they should not hesitate to use the 19th selection on a cornerback. That’s especially true if Henderson is available. Unquestionably the No. 2 cornerback in this draft, Henderson is a natural pass defender who knows how to time routes and can stick with all varieties of receiver.
20. Jacksonville Jaguars: (via Los Angeles Rams): Yetur Gross-Matos, Edge, Penn State
The Yannick Ngakoue rumor mill has begun to start spinning wildly as he continually talks about departing Jacksonville despite getting a franchise tag designation. If the Jaguars want to replace him, Gross-Matos is a solid option as an outside player. Gross-Matos had 17.5 sacks over his final two seasons at Penn State, and knows how to use his length and quickness to beat blockers. Sure, he has to get better against the run, but so did Ngakoue coming out of Maryland.
21. Philadelphia Eagles: Justin Jefferson, WR, LSU
If they wanted, the Eagles probably could have gone after free agent receivers Robby Anderson, Randall Cobb, Breshad Perriman, or Emmanuel Sanders. But they didn’t and all four signed elsewhere. That leaves the Eagles to the draft, and potentially Jefferson. He had 111 receptions for LSU last season, and anything close to that production in the NFL would be well worth the 21st pick.
22. Minnesota Vikings (via Buffalo Bills): Jeff Gladney, CB, TCU
It would be easy to see Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer falling in love with Gladney. The aggressive TCU cornerback is exactly what the Vikings need in their secondary. Gladney is a tone setter at cornerback who can lock down a team’s lead receiver. As the Vikings continue to have problems at the position, Gladney can be their solution.
23. New England Patriots: Jordan Love, QB, Utah State
Yep, I’m back on Love to the Patriots. For starters, I don’t see him falling out of the first round. And if he’s there when New England picks, Bill Belichick might have a hard time passing up on Love’s pure talent.
24. New Orleans Saints: Kenneth Murray, LB, Oklahoma
Although the Saints have All-Pro linebacker Demario Davis, their other linebackers — specifically Alex Anzalone and Kiko Alonso — have battled numerous injuries. Plus, Davis is a free agent after this season. Murray would give the Saints a young, athletic talent at the position, and the team could start to focus on building up the defense as quarterback Drew Brees’ career winds down.
25. Minnesota Vikings: Denzel Mims, WR, Baylor
I’m back on this pick for the Vikings at No. 25. As the draft gets closer, it seems like Mims is going to be a first-round pick. That means he leapfrogs receivers like Tee Higgins of Clemson and Jalen Reagor of TCU. Part of the reason could be recency bias. Mims had a stellar Senior Bowl and NFL Scouting Combine. In this bizarre year, the mark Mims has left could matter more than ever.
26. Miami Dolphins (via Houston Texans): D’Andre Swift, RB, Georgia
If there is one team that could take a running back in the first round of the draft, it is the Dolphins. And if there is one running back who should go in the first round of the draft this year, it is Swift. The Georgia product is like a combination of former Bulldog running backs Nick Chubb and Sony Michel. Swift’s vision is exactly what you want in a running back, and he is special as a pass catcher. He’s the kind of back who can be kicked out into the slot and generate a mismatch for the offense. You can argue the value of a first-round running back all you want. But it’s hard to see Swift failing in the NFL.
27. Seattle Seahawks: Austin Jackson, OT, USC
This isn’t a corny Pete Carroll/USC pick. This is more of a high-ceiling gamble on Jackson for the Seahawks. Coming into the year, many thought Jackson had top-10 talent. That type of player is still in there if he gets the proper coaching. Jackson’s foot quickness is impressive, and he can handle speed rushers well.
28. Baltimore Ravens: Patrick Queen, LB, LSU
At some point early in this draft, the Ravens have to address the middle linebacker position. Why not in the first round with Queen? Both Josh Bynes and Patrick Onwuasor left Baltimore this offseason, and the position is clearly an issue.
29. Tennessee Titans: Isaiah Wilson, OT, Georgia
This is the late first-round pick I’ve really fallen in love with the last couple weeks. Wilson is a mountain at 6’6 and 350 pounds, and he could still be growing after turning just 21 in February. Wilson’s standout ability right now is as a run blocker. Tennessee was third in the NFL in rushing last season and could continue that trend with Wilson replacing Jack Conklin.
30. Green Bay Packers: Brandon Aiyuk, WR, Arizona State
Green Bay’s need for a wide receiver has been obvious for quite some time. The players the Packers have currently have been inconsistent, besides Davante Adams. Green Bay never properly replaced Randall Cobb after the 2018 season, either. Aiyuk can be the dependable No. 2 receiver the Packers have needed.
31. San Francisco 49ers: Kristian Fulton, CB, LSU
The 49ers will need help in the secondary sooner rather than later, and Fulton could be their next lead cornerback. Fulton may not create a lot of interceptions (he had just two at LSU), but he knows how to break up passes thanks to his instincts and timing.
32. Kansas City Chiefs: A.J. Epenesa, DE, Iowa
The Chiefs would probably love to see Murray or Queen available here, but they’re both gone. If that’s the case and the Chiefs don’t trade down, they could target a defensive lineman like Epenesa. He would give the Chiefs a good player opposite Frank Clark, and one who has the ability to work outside and inside.

Advice from a Naturopathic Doctor in Toronto: Dealing with Vitamin D During Wintertime
youtube
#text-639723061 { text-align: center; }
Our clinic’s naturopathic doctor in Toronto advises Canadians on why they need to consider vitamin D supplementation in the wintertime. It is because the body can produce vitamin D efficiently during the summer months. But with grey skies during the wintertime, Canadians need to pay attention to their vitamin D levels. A vitamin D deficiency may cause various side effects, including depression, bone and muscle pain, cramping and/or weakness.
Below are some relevant facts about Vitamin D and its impact on health, as well as recommendations from our Toronto Naturopath on how you may find alternative supplementation.
Why is vitamin D called the “sunshine vitamin”?
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is naturally obtained from exposing uncovered skin to sunlight. In particular, ultraviolet B (UVB) rays shine onto the skin; the skin then generates a precursor that is altered into an active vitamin D form in the kidneys and liver.
Vitamin D supports bone health; it also helps with the absorption and retention of calcium and phosphorus in the body. Many tissues and organs in the human body have vitamin D receptors, denoting the vitamin’s critical roles in insulin regulation, fertility support, cardiovascular health, and immune, brain, and nervous system support.
Vitamin D may bring additional support to the immune system
Did you know that studies have linked vitamin D deficiencies to respiratory tract infections, including the common cold, bronchitis and pneumonia? It’s safe to say that vitamin D supplements may impact your health during cold and flu season and beyond.
One of the roles of this vitamin includes keeping your immune system strong to ward off viruses and bacteria. Vitamin D interacts with the body’s antimicrobial activity in our innate immune cells, prompting the fight against infections.
Vitamin D has also been shown to enhance antimicrobial peptides, molecules that defend our cells from bacterial “invaders”. Hence, it’s suggested that there’s a molecular basis for vitamin D protecting the body against bacteria and viruses.
Vitamin D may help you deal with the “winter blues”
Suffering from the winter blues? Some Canadians experience this from a lack of sun exposure, resulting in prolonged sadness. Seasonal changes in vitamin D levels suggest the possibility that supplementation may help with issues such as seasonal mood disorders.
In fact, “Several studies showed a significant relationship between vitamin D deficiency and late-life depression in northern latitudes,” explains an article in Neuropsychiatry. The article goes on to say, “In further assessment of an older population-based cohort living at northern latitudes, a moderate inverse relationship between vitamin D serum level and depressive symptoms was observed among both genders.”
However, additional studies need to be conducted on specifically preventing or treating depression with vitamin D. Meanwhile, research continues to suggest that depression and vitamin D deficiencies are connected.
Vitamin D may help reduce muscle and back pain from a vitamin D deficiency
Did you know that bone, leg, shin and/or low back pain, combined with fatigue, may be a sign of insufficient vitamin D levels in the blood? In one controlled study, participants deficient in vitamin D were almost twice as likely to have achy joints, ribs or legs in comparison to those with normal-range blood levels.
If you’re indoors during most of the winter season and you have body pain, you may want to discuss vitamin D therapy with your naturopathic doctor in Toronto. According to Frontiers in Immunology, “Several studies indicate that vitamin D supplementation and/or deficiency changes the gut microbiota profile; as such, this can potentially modulate visceral pain.”
Many are surprised to learn that muscle pain may be related to vitamin D deficiencies. Some health care practitioners believe this may be common for patients with muscle knots (also known as “trigger points”). More research needs to be shepherded on this thought, but vitamin D may help scientists understand this further.
On the plus side, vitamin D supplementation may help improve muscle strength. As reported by Nutrients, “Studies have demonstrated that vitamin D supplementation can improve muscle strength which in turn contributes to a decrease in incidence of falls, one of the largest contributors to fracture incidence.”
Where to find vitamin D sources
It’s possible to improve your vitamin D levels. Naturopathic doctors would suggest eating D-rich foods, such as fatty fish (i.e. salmon and arctic char), fish oil, fortified milk, egg yolks, and fortified breakfast cereals.
Nevertheless, vitamin D isn’t always accessible through diet, especially if you’re vegan or lactose intolerant. So vitamin D liquid or gel capsules are recommended. Unlike tablets, liquid or gel capsules are efficient for bodily absorption. When choosing a vitamin D supplement, look at the product’s certificate of analysis. This ensures that third-party groups have tested the product for safety and that your product is free of contaminants. If you can’t find the certificate of analysis, call the supplement company to request this.
Finally, ask your naturopathic doctor in Toronto about vitamin D supplements. Vitamin D supplementation is also available via intramuscular injections, which are available at Dr. Amauri Wellness Centre, a naturopathic medicine clinic located at the heart of Toronto, Ontario. High-dose vitamin D may be injected into the muscle, which gradually releases the vitamin through the bloodstream.
Are you at risk of a vitamin D deficiency?
Vitamin D deficiency is surprisingly common. Unfortunately, it’s hard to pinpoint when it’s an issue, especially since symptoms may feel minimal by those who are affected. If you have health concerns or is concerned about a vitamin D deficiency, please speak to your health care practitioner. Currently, our naturopathic doctor in Toronto is accepting new patients; strict COVID-19 protocols are in place. By applying integrative functional medicine, our clinic embraces individuality; all of our natural treatments take your lifestyle and biology into consideration.

Alex and Joey Do A Mock Draft Finalmente
It’s NFL Draft Week! With no sports to speak of, the NFL is rolling through with its own digital event in the 2020 NFL Draft. It’ll be done entirely in what I imagine will be an ultra laggy skype chat. Either way, the 32 NFL teams will pick 253 players across three days and we’ll all be watching because what else will we do? Alex and I got together to do a mock draft at like 10 PM at night and he’s got the odds while I’ve got the evens.
#1 - Cincinnati Bengals - QB Joe Burrow - LSU
Who are we kidding here, he's been the pick for the past like 4 months and unless someone dies, or steals all of the bandwith in Cincy? Then it's Burrow's time in his proverbial hometown. The question is where does Andy Dalton end up now?
#2- Washington Redskins- DE Chase Young- Ohio State University
There's not much to be said here. Despite having some superb edge help already on the team, the Redskins make the easy selection of Chase Young and build the sort of pass rush long term that can bolster Ron Rivera's defense and also pressure the likes of Daniel Jones, Carson Wentz and Dak Prescott. It's a safe pick.
#3 - Detroit Lions (ugh) - Jeff Okudah - CB, Ohio State
I feel like Matt Patricia, although an imbecile of the highest regard, can't possibly fuck this one up. You lost Darius Slay, you signed Desmond Trufant of all people and he doesn't move the needle. You select Okudah and get a guy who shuts down one side of the field for the next 6-8 years. Easy pick.
#4- New York Giants- OT Tristen Wirfs- University of Iowa
This pick is so for sale. The Dolphins, Chargers and maybe even Raiders will all be jockeying for this pick if the Giants want out. Rather than force Alex to live with a wacky trade scenario, I'll just say ONE WAY OR ANOTHER the Giants end up selecting Tristen Wirfs. It just fits the Gettleman playbook of being ridiculously old school in philosophy. He takes a big bodied OL to protect his QB and help pave lines for his stud RB.
#5 - Miami Dolphins - Justin Herbert - QB - Oregon
Welp, I agree with Joey about Wirfs going to the Giants, but I thought Miami and the Giants would swap 4 & 5 to get it done, with the Giants moving down a pick. That said? Let's get weird. People had Tua going here and well, he's not folks. The Dolphins make the mistake of a lifetime and continue their QB futility and select a dude who only completed 67 percent of his passes, struggled and disappeared for multiple times during the season, but he had a good Senior Bowl and combine, so that must mean it's smart. Justin Herbert is the product of the media being enamored with certain guys come draft time; either for being smart, likable, or having "intangibles"...all of those don't get you wins, though. But, he'll be servicable and with multiple picks in the first round, they can afford to reach.
#6- Los Angeles Chargers- OT Jedrick Wills- University of Alabama
I could see Tua here. I could see Isaiah Simmons here. If the Chargers are serious about Tyrod Taylor (they're not) then taking Tua or Love here would allow them the chance to develop him while Taylor gets his shot. That said I think taking a QB is contingent on the right guy being there and I'm not sure Tua  and LA are a match right now. A desperate GM/head coach combination trying to keep their jobs will take somebody who can help right now. That's Wills who will protect whoever the QB is.
#7 - Carolina Panthers - Isiah Simmons - LB - Clemson
Luke is gone, you pretty much gave the team over to Teddy Bridgewater and Run CMC,/Dairy Sanders, so you go with the local product and you secure your second line of defense before anything else. Explosive, a leader, great in coverage, he's a cornerstone. Don't fuck it up.
#8- Arizona Cardinals - DT Derrick Brown- University of Auburn
You could totally sell me on the Cardinals going WR here, especially with Fitz on a one year deal and Arizona listening to offers on Christian Kirk. I feel like Carolina and Arizona will set each other up in theory as the Cards will take whoever Carolina doesn't select out of the duo of Simmons and Brown. Derrick Brown falling to #8 feels like a monumental misallocation of resources by teams 1-7 because he's got elite big nose tackle ability. Jacksonville would absolutely kick themselves to get THIS close to Brown and not get him.
#9 - Jacksonville Jaguars - Tua Tagovailoa - QB- Alabama
Honestly, he shouldn't have fallen this far. Hip injury be damned, he was the best QB / player in this draft before the injury. People will make a huge deal of the Wonderlic score, but that's overrated, to be honest. He's a freak specimen and for all intents and purposes, I'd be more concerned if there was blood flow loss to the hip, which there wasn't. Meaning the problems come at 35, not 25. So I'm optimistic here. Plus when your starter is a dude with a porn stache and getting benched by Nick Foles who you just got rid of? You take Tua. You're stupid not to.
#10- Cleveland Browns- OT Mekhi Beckton- University of Louisville
The Browns amassed stars at every spot on the OL and then watched their poor QB get beat to hell. Baker Mayfield simply couldn't be protected and there's nothing harder to rebuild for a young QB than a broken internal clock. The best way to protect Baker Mayfield is to ACTUALLY protect him and Mekhi Beckton is a mammoth left tackle prototype who can give Mayfield a shot to develop into the stud people expected him to be. You've basically got one more year to figure out if he's "the guy" or not before you have to consider the fifth year option.
#11 - NY Jets- CeeDee Lamb - WR - OU
I feel like at some point, you gotta get Sam Darnold weapons. Lamb is the best receiver in the draft, maybe not speed-wise, but in every other facet. Give Sam a shot to be good. Give him an opportunity to have a receiver who does more than slant routes. I'm looking at you, Jae Crowder.
#12- Oakland Raiders- WR Jerry Jeudy- University of Alabama
I wouldn't be stunned if Oakland legitimately opted to take a cornerback at 12 and then a wide receiver at 19. It wouldn't shock me if they traded out of the 12th pick either or traded up. I also wouldn't be shocked if they took Tua if he slipped here because Gruden and Mayock have endless job security. All things considered, give me Jerry Jeudy at 12 which is ironic because the Raiders HAD Jerry Jeudy in Amari Cooper. We're talking a route savvy big play WR with a low key demeanor who Gruden basically threw in the towel on in less than a year. If Carr can't win with Jacobs, Jeudy and Waller then he's just not the guy.
#13 - SF 49ers - Henry Ruggs III - WR - Alabama
Emmanuel Sanders' arrival midway through last season proved how much the Niners were missing another receiving threat beyond All-Pro George Kittle and rookie Deebo Samuel. They had NOBODY. While Samuel showed real playmaking ability in the short and intermediate range last year, Ruggs' ability to burn EVERYONE gives them a legitimate big play threat every time he lines up opposite a corner or an overmatched nickelback.
#14- Tampa Bay Buccaneers- OT Andrew Thomas - University of Georgia
You don't take Tom Brady without the plans to protect him and build around him. As much fun as it is to imagine the Bucs taking a developmental QB like Jordan Love, Andrew Thomas is the easiest pick. This is an old QB and an old head coach trying to make a run in a division with the likes of Drew Brees and Matt Ryan. Thomas gives them the best chance to win and honestly represents the last of the real good OT prospects.
#15 - Denver Broncos - Kenneth Murray - LB - OU
Jeudy would have been the pick here if he lasted this long, but you get the replacement for an aging Von Miller. Ruthless, with an elite motor and a high character guy who will captain your defense in two or three years. He's the prototype LB you're looking for nowadays.
#16- Atlanta Falcons- CB CJ Henderson- University of Florida
Wouldn't surprise me one bit if the Falcons made the move UP in the draft to get Henderson. CJ Henderson has a serious aversion to contact which is normally a deathknell for a cornerback but if the name of the game is coverage? Henderson is your guy. He's big, athletic and has been getting tested vs SEC level wideouts for the past three years. My guess is every team from 14 to 20 will have some level of interest in Henderson.
#17 - Dallas Cowboys - Javon Kinlaw - DT - The Real USC
Let's make Joey happy here. There are always one or two teams that use a first-round pick on a player they simply like a lot -- even if he doesn't address a glaring need. Kinlaw doesn't necessarily fill a need other than the hole in Cowboy fans hearts that Demarcus Ware doesn't line up on Sundays anymore. Kinlaw is the best guy on the board. Take him.
#18- Miami Dolphins- EDGE K'Lavon Chaisson- Louisiana State University
The Cowboys stop the slide of Kinlaw and the Dolphins step in and take the next sliding guy immediately thereafter. A really young impressive team leader, I can see Chaisson really appealing to Brian Flores and the Miami defense that's in the midst of a rebuild. Alex gives the Dolphins their QB of the future and I give them their new Robert Quinn with a super bendy bursty stand up edge rusher who can terrorize QBs off the blind side.
#19 - Las Vegas Raiders - Patrick Queen - LB - LSU
They need a defensive playmaker, and Queen embodies that. Quick, athletic and able to change a game on a dime, I like him better than Clemson's Terrell, but wouldn't be shocked to see either one go here.
#20- Jacksonville Jaguars- CB AJ Terrell- University of Clemson
Alex and I basically alternate picking each others players here. I had the Jaguars taking Queen if he fell here but with Queen gone, AJ Terrell sure SEEMS like a dude who is a lock to go before pick 25. Long athletic and heady, I could see the Jaguars loving Terrell for his upside. He's not a Jalen Ramsey replacement but for a defense bereft of talent and in the midst of a long rebuild, Terrell fits the mold of what they're aiming to build.
#21 - Philly Eagles - Justin Jefferson - WR - LSU
So... I don't love this pick, but admittedly the Eagles do not have receivers besides Zach Ertz at TE. I think they reach a tiny bit here and get themselves a tall, sure-handed receiver who may be as good as someone like Jeudy to be honest.
#22- Minnesota Vikings- CB Trevon Diggs- University of Alabama
Mike Zimmer likes long corners who can press and have athleticism to match up with their size. That's basically Diggs. He's going to need a lot of work and he's pretty raw but I think if you squint real hard, you can see some of the same traits that made Xavier Rhodes so good under Mike Zimmer and the Vikings scheme.
#23 - New England Patriots - Jordan Love - QB - Utah State
You think I'm kidding. I'm not. Love lead a Utah State team to an 11-2 record in his Junior Year when he had Matt Wells and a proper system in place, to the tune of 30 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. He carved up the conference and lead Utah State to their biggest bowl birth ever. Senior year saw problems when Wells left to Texas Tech to replace Kliff Kingsbury, but despite a new system, losing multiple targets to graduation, and massive injuries to his offensive line, Love put up numbers. Honestly? Jordan Love is an undeveloped Pat Mahomes. Belichick isn't going to ride with Stidham for long, and Hoyer is a stop-gap. You either take the chance on Love here, or you grab Jalen Hurts in Round 2.
#24- New Orleans Saints- WR Jalen Reagor- TCU
Reagor didn't quite rewrite the Combine record books with his performance but I think he's got some of the same traits that Brandin Cooks had back when the Saints moved heaven and earth to snag him. He's got speed, he's a big play every time the ball is in his hands, he's nifty and nimble as an open field runner and he's got just enough questions about his hands to fall to around the same spot Cooks did. Reagor is bigger and stronger though which gives Drew Brees arguably the best WR trio in the league with route savvy Emmanuel Sanders, top flight Michael Thomas and an insanely talented rookie in Reagor.
#25 - Minnesota Vikings - Yetur Gross-Matos - EDGE - PSU
It's possible the Vikings will trade this pick at some point, maybe for Jacksonville edge rusher Yannick Ngakoue or for Cleveland receiver Odell Beckham Jr. (I know the Browns have said they're not looking to move him, but crazier things have happened.) But for now, Gross-Matos is the pick here, as the Vikes address two of their top three needs in Round 1.
#26- Miami Dolphins- OT Joshua Jones- University of Houston
I have a firm "no first round running backs!" rule and I intend to stick by that. As such, give the Dolphins Josh Jones out of Houston. Jones would give the Dolphins a long term developmental tackle who could play at either spot and would be pretty important in protecting their QB Justin Herbert.
#27 - Seattle Seahawks - Ross Blacklock - DT- TCU
Versatile, high energy and beefy guy to shore up a defensive line that needs a bit of help. Ultimately forsee him playing off the edge, but in the mean time? Definitely a hogmolie you want on your line.
#28- Baltimore Ravens- LB Zack Baun- University of Wisconsin
Baun feels like the sort of versatile chess piece defender that Wink Martindale would absolutely have a plan for. He's a little undersized and sort of a jack of all trades but for a Ravens team that's not exactly heavy on needs, they could experiment a little bit. Baun could play any linebacker spot in a pinch, can cover enough to not be exposed and has the high level athleticism and instincts that when married together create for a Clay Matthews-y player.
#29 - Teneessee Titans - Kristian Fulton - CB - LSU
If they're moving on from Logan Ryan like is being floated around? Then he's your replacement. He's a "Do Your Job" / Lunchpail / Belichick disciple guy that Vrabel will love. Does all the dirty work, doesn't shy from contact, great cover corner and is potent on run defense as well. Fits perfect here.
#30- Green Bay Packers- WR Denzel Mims- Baylor University
A big bodied wide receiver who can help try to coax the last year or so out of the Aaron Rodgers Era? The Packers have amassed a nice collection of guys who profile as depth wide outs but Mims and Adams gives you a scary combination of size, strength and speed on the outside. Mims has so much Dez Bryant-y traits in his game that I'd imagine Rodgers will crash the zoom call to make this pick himself if he can.
#31- SF 49ers - Brando Aiyuk - ASU
You got your speed guy earlier in the day, now you get the slot guy who is for all intents and purposes, the Swiss Army Knife receiver who can do it all. Losing Sanders was a blow, but you can replace him now with Aiyuk while Ruggs and Samuel fly along the outside. That's a dangerous trio if they play their cards right.
#32- Kansas City Chiefs- CB Jeff Gladney- TCU
If ball skills are your thing then Gladney is your guy. He's can make plays on the ball, is physical enough to challenge wide receivers and fluid enough to stay with some of the shiftier guys over short distances. You'll often hear the word "dog" haphazardly thrown around as it pertains to cornerbacks but Gladney IS a dog and eerily reminiscent of former TCU CB Jason Verrett. He's just small-ish and slow-ish, a normally deadly combination when it comes to cornerbacks in the NFL.

$150 Electric Power Steering? Junkyard Prius Delivers!
Costs a tenth of the aftermarket solutions, and saves you horsepower and fuel!
While hot rodders begrudge fuel economy regulations like a childhood curfew, the OEMs’ conquest for efficiency has left us with some excellent LEGO bricks for our projects. Namely, the abundance of electric power steering (EPS) systems that have found their way into factory cars over the last decade. Though Honda/Acura was first to introduce the voltage-assisted tech in the 1991 NSX, it wasn’t until the mid-2000s that the industry saw widespread adoption of EPS, when the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 bumped Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) requirements (or the average fuel economy of an automaker’s passenger cars) up to 35mpg by 2020. The byproduct of these fuel economy-minded changes? What makes an engine more fuel efficient often helps make more horsepower!
We guess there are more uses for Priuses (Priuii?) than tank fodder. The second-generation Prius was not just popular with eco-nuts, but taxi companies as well – there’s no shortage of them in our local yards.
By eliminating the hydraulic pump and steering box, a significant – and always present – parasitic drag on the engine is removed. While the Toyota EPS system we’re about to dive into is rated for up to 60amps of current draw, most of the time it will pull a tenth of that as you go about typical driving, and the battery is able to compensate for much of that current draw before it passes the load to the alternator. This means that you can retain one-finger power steering while freeing up a little extra horsepower and maybe even a little fuel mileage. Plus, it removes a lot of plumbing, flammable fluids, and weight out of the engine bay. EPS isn’t necessarily new to the aftermarket, but with most kits starting around $1,000 for universal components, this $150 junkyard jewel makes for a perfect donor.
How does this EPS wizardry work?
EPS is an incredibly simple system that uses a torque sensor to measure driver input (steering position, torque, and velocity), an electronic control unit (ECU) to interpret that data, and a beer-can-sized electric motor on a worm-drive to directly assist the steering column (though some systems, like the aforementioned NSX, place the motor on the steering rack instead). While not necessary for this particular swap, the EPS ECU also takes data from the CAN-bus to interpret vehicle speed and stability control information into how much assist it produces – mostly to provide extra boost at low speed to ease parking lot maneuvers, while lessening the boost at higher speeds so that the steering is less sensitive and tracks straighter with less input.
The torque sensor is the real magician in this system. The steering shaft is magnetized with multiple North and South poles along its circumference, which act similar to the teeth of a Hall Effect crank or wheel sensor. They as an encoder to tell the EPS ECU what angle the steering wheel is and how quickly it’s turning.
When you steer the wheel and rotate the magnetized steering shaft, the internal magnetic field distorts with the input torque (twist), which is read by the magnetic field sensor and the EPS ECU, and calculated into steering torque number to measure how hard you’re steering and how much feedback is coming through the steering gear.
With this data, along with the optional VSS input, the EPS ECU decides what direction to spin the motor along with how much force.
A popular donor for this mod are the GM Delta platform cars: the Saturn Ion, Chevy Cobalt and HHR, and Pontiac G5. The cars were prolific, and with 15 years of production, abundant in junkyards today; but they’re not as brain-dead as the Toyota EPS when removed from the car. The EPS ECU found in the Delta cars still requires a vehicle speed sensor signal, which can be simulated with an extra little module found online for $75 to $100. For the Toyota system, however, it uses a fail safe mode (DTC U0073 and U0121) when it can’t see the CAN-bus or vehicle speed sensor, setting its assist like it would at 43 mph. This sounds like a bodge, but pioneers of this swap have reported thousands of miles of usage with no issues. This makes the Toyota EPS entirely stand-alone, simplifying the swap further while reducing costs by eliminating the need for extra parts. Depending on how your local yard charges, the entire column, motor, and ECU can be had for $50 to $150.
We found ours in a second-gen 2004-2009 Prius, but these can also be found in most 2009+ Corollas and Yaris as well. We’ve read that Nissan, Hyundai, and Kia possibly use a similar stand-alone EPS, but can’t confirm it ourselves.
Installing into a project
We’re going to be a little brief here, as each install is unique to the project it’s going into, but we’ll give you the skinny on what the Toyota EPS needs to operate.
The Toyota EPS only needs three wires to operate. An 8-gauge power feed with a 60 amp fuse supplies the main juice along with an 8-gauge ground (6-gauge or larger may be necessary for longer, trunk-mounted battery harnesses). Next, Pin 6 of Connector P8 is run to a fused, switched 12v source to trigger the system when the key is turned “on.”
First and foremost, the factory fuse is 60 amps, so we’d recommend 8-gauge or larger wiring for the primary 12v and ground wires that power the ECU and motor. While this current draw is one of the highest you’ll see in most automotive systems, EPS operates at about a tenth of that in typical operation. Think of it like a hydraulic system, it builds maximum pressure and stresses the system most when the wheel is against something, like a curb or the steering-stops themselves, and cannot steer further. Next, the only other hook-up needed is to a switched 12v source that turns on with the ignition. Once wired, you’ll hear the ECU click its main power relay, and within a few seconds the motor will come alive. You may notice that without any connection to a steering system, that the motor does basically nothing. The torque sensor needs to see a load on the steering shaft to begin its assist, so be sure to lock down the steering box/rack end of the assembly when testing the unit’s function.
Mounting the Toyota EPS column is project-dependent, but it comes with two very usable factory mounts for 12mm hardware. The lower mount is a simple, using a Delrin-isolated cross bolt that doubles as a pivot for the tilt; and the upper mount incorporates a sliding lock for tilt.
The lower mount can pivot with the tilt mechanism in the upper mount, and is retained by a long, 2.5- to 3-inch-long, 12mm bolt.
Depending on how much of the steering column tube and upper mount is retained when adapting your column, the factory’s upper mount incorporate the tilt mechanism.
What you’ve got to engineer is the adaption to your factory or aftermarket steering shaft and column to connect the Toyota EPS to your machine’s steering wheel and tie rods. We’ve seen a handful of solutions for this, but it’s similar to the skills necessary to shorten and install any other steering column. Some folks machine (or carefully grind) the Toyota steering shaft to accept a D-shaft coupler, like what’s found in ididit’s universal columns. Others have bored the Toyota shaft out while turning the diameter of the factory steering shafts down to fit inside, then press-fitting and welding the assembly together. We made sure to grab the steering shaft and its U-joint so that adapting it downstream would be easier without needing to source the Prius-specific pieces, saving a few more bucks – but CJ’s Pony Parts sells the appropriate 11/16-inch 36-spline weldable coupler if needed.
You’ll also have to “de-power” your hydraulic steering box or rack, or use a manual-steering unit to complete the swap, but this is required for any EPS conversion.
We’ll focus on install options in a future story, but for now, we wanted to plant the EPS seed in your brain as you chew on ideas for your next project.

Here’s our latest NFL mock draft after the start of free agency
Tumblr media
Cornerbacks Trevon Diggs, Kristian Fulton, and CJ Henderson are all possible first-round picks in 2020.
There’s much more to this draft than Jeff Okudah in pass coverage. Here are a few other corners who could come off the board early.
In the past week, a lot has changed in the NFL world. Of course, many players have signed with new teams. But there have also been some blockbuster trades involving first-round picks that shake up the 2020 NFL Draft.
Namely, the 49ers acquired the 13th overall pick by trading defensive lineman DeForest Buckner to the Indianapolis Colts. Minnesota turned wide receiver Stefon Diggs into the 22nd pick overall. Strangely, though, the Houston Texans are still without a first-round pick because they didn’t get one for star wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins.
The moves in free agency have filled holes on rosters and opened new ones. The cornerback market has been strong at the top, with four cornerbacks getting contracts of at least $40 million — Byron Jones, James Bradberry, Trae Waynes, and Kendall Fuller all cashed in.
But plenty of teams still need good cornerbacks. In today’s NFL, a complete roster should have three quality cornerbacks. Few actually do. This week’s mock draft features five cornerbacks in the first round. The last time that happened was the 2017 draft, which featured Marshon Lattimore, Marlon Humphrey, Adoree’ Jackson, Gareon Conley, and Tre’Davious White in the first round.
This year’s group could be just as impactful. Here’s a look at where they land:
1. Cincinnati Bengals: Joe Burrow, QB, LSU
A recent mock draft by NFL Media’s Lance Zierlein floated the wild idea of the Bengals trading out of the No. 1 pick. In the theoretical deal, the Bengals got pick Nos. 5 and 18, and a second-rounder from the Miami Dolphins. On a rebuilding team, that makes some sense. But passing on Burrow could come back to haunt Cincinnati.
2. Washington: Chase Young, DE, Ohio State
If we’re being honest, Washington doesn’t really need Young. The team is loaded up front with pass rushers Ryan Kerrigan and Montez Sweat, and Jonathan Allen and Da’Ron Payne on the defensive line. But when a player of Young’s caliber is available, he’s impossible to pass on.
3. Detroit Lions: Isaiah Simmons, LB, Clemson
The Lions have spent the offseason acquiring as many former New England Patriots as possible, including outside linebacker Jamie Collins. That shouldn’t impact the fit of Simmons, though.
4. New York Giants: Tristan Wirfs, OT, Iowa
In free agency, the Giants swapped out Mike Remmers for Cameron Fleming, a player familiar with the team’s new coaching staff. But it would be unwise to simply hand a starting tackle spot to him. A player like Wirfs could push for a starting spot at multiple positions on the line. The only thing that should keep the Giants from taking him is a trade back or Simmons being available.
5. Miami Dolphins: Tua Tagovailoa, QB, Alabama
The plan for Tagovailoa is to still have a personal pro day on April 9 and he’ll send the tape out to teams. But the greater issue is health and the concern of re-injuring himself. I’m keeping him either at this pick or to the Chargers, but his situation still deserves monitoring.
6. Los Angeles Chargers: Justin Herbert, QB, Oregon
The Chargers made a push to sign Tom Brady, but it was unsuccessful. After that, they aren’t expected to sign a veteran quarterback. That would lead you to believe they’re going to take a quarterback in the first round this year.
7. Carolina Panthers: Derrick Brown, DT, Auburn
By signing quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, the Panthers are clearly starting a new chapter. That also includes a rebuilt left side of their offensive line, which now features Russell Okung and John Miller. On defense, the Panthers still need help. Ohio State cornerback Jeff Okudah could be considered, but the Panthers have to get better up the middle. Brown is a force on the inside who can improve Carolina’s run defense.
8. Arizona Cardinals: Jedrick Wills, OT, Alabama
After performing highway robbery acquiring Hopkins, that leaves offensive tackle as the obvious move for the Cardinals. Although Louisville’s Mekhi Becton is the better player, he and Wills grade out pretty similarly. Wills could get the nod because the Cardinals need a right tackle, and that’s where he predominantly played at Alabama.
9. Jacksonville Jaguars: Jeff Okudah, CB, Ohio State
Cornerback Darqueze Dennard was a decent pickup on a three-year deal, but at $13.5 million total, Jacksonville isn’t exactly paying him to be a starter. If Okudah is still around with the ninth pick, he’s an easy choice for the Jaguars.
10. Cleveland Browns: Mekhi Becton, OT, Louisville
The loser of the Hopkins trade, besides Houston, was Cleveland. It all but assures the Cardinals taking one of the offensive tackles off the board. After handing out a huge deal to right tackle Jack Conklin, the Browns will be after the best left tackle available with the No. 10 pick. That could be Becton or Georgia’s Andrew Thomas.
11. New York Jets: CeeDee Lamb, WR, Oklahoma
The Jets gave big money to offensive tackle George Fant, which should be an indicator of their plans for him. That could lead New York to take the first wide receiver in the draft. Lamb would give Sam Darnold a game-breaking target who can make a play after the catch.
12. Las Vegas Raiders: Jerry Jeudy, WR, Alabama
Almost all of Las Vegas’ additions this offseason have been on defense. The Raiders could be waiting for the draft to snag a No. 1 receiver. The issue here is about which Alabama player they prefer. Jeudy gets the nod this week. He’s more of a sure thing than teammate Henry Ruggs III.
13. San Francisco 49ers (via Indianapolis Colts): CJ Henderson, CB, Florida
There has been talk since the NFL Scouting Combine that Henderson would be a top-15 pick. Now that the 49ers hold the 13th selection, they could be the team to make that come true. After this season, defensive backs Richard Sherman, Jaquiski Tartt, K’Wuan Williams and Ahkello Witherspoon are all unrestricted free agents. That could lead the 49ers to future-proofing their defense with a player like Henderson.
14. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Andrew Thomas, OT, Georgia
The Buccaneers have Tom Brady, and now they have to protect him. The interior of Tampa’s line is good with Ryan Jensen and Ali Marpet. However, the tackles leave plenty to be desired. Thomas saw a lot of snaps at Georgia and is the type of rookie who should be able to start straight away. That’s what the Buccaneers need.
15. Denver Broncos: Henry Ruggs III, WR, Alabama
One of the better moves of this offseason has been the Broncos trading for defensive lineman Jurrell Casey. That helps negate the loss of Derek Wolfe. If they don’t want South Carolina defensive lineman Javon Kinlaw, the Broncos could find a partner for wide receiver Courtland Sutton. Ruggs, Sutton, and second-year tight end Noah Fant would give the Broncos an impressive group of receiving options for Drew Lock.
16. Atlanta Falcons: Javon Kinlaw, DT, South Carolina
The Falcons locked up pass rusher Dante Fowler Jr. on a three-year deal, but that shouldn’t stop them from taking a defensive lineman. In last year’s draft, the Falcons used their first two picks on offensive linemen, so general manager Thomas Dimitroff won’t shy away from doubling down on a need. Kinlaw could be what the Falcons were hoping to get in Ra’Shede Hageman in 2014.
17. Dallas Cowboys: Yetur Gross-Matos, Edge, Penn State
While the Cowboys are still trying to figure out a contract for quarterback Dak Prescott, they’ve made some big-name moves. They gave $100 million to wide receiver Amari Cooper and added Gerald McCoy and HaHa Clinton-Dix on defense. The Cowboys still need pass rush help, and could nab Gross-Matos to play opposite DeMarcus Lawrence.
18. Miami Dolphins (via Pittsburgh Steelers): Austin Jackson, OT, USC
The Dolphins have made several moves to fix their defense in free agency, bringing in Byron Jones, Shaq Lawson, Emmanuel Ogbah, and Kyle Van Noy. Their moves on offense, though, are lacking. That’s why I’m sticking with Jackson to Miami with the No. 18 pick.
19. Las Vegas Raiders (via Chicago Bears): Trevon Diggs, CB, Alabama
Linebacker was obviously a big offseason priority for the Raiders, as they went out and signed Nick Kwiatkoski and Cory Littleton. Adding two starters might mean waiting on the position until later in the draft. Instead, they could address cornerback with Diggs.
20. Jacksonville Jaguars: (via Los Angeles Rams): K’Lavon Chaisson, Edge, LSU
With Yannick Ngakoue wanting out of Jacksonville, his replacement could be found in Chaisson. While the LSU product will need to be developed, he has a quick burst off the line of scrimmage and knows how to create pressure.
21. Philadelphia Eagles: Justin Jefferson, WR, LSU
After adding four defensive backs in free agency, that need is no longer as pressing for the Eagles. That’s why I’m holding with Jefferson here. Jefferson would give the Eagles a dangerous deep-ball target for Carson Wentz.
22. Minnesota Vikings (via Buffalo Bills): Kristian Fulton, CB, LSU
Minnesota’s cornerback play last season was a mess. Now with two first-round picks, the Vikings can address the position. Henderson or Diggs would be the preference, but Fulton is a good fit in Mike Zimmer’s defense.
23. New England Patriots: Jordan Love, QB, Utah State
It’s hard to believe the Patriots will go into next season with either Jarrett Stidham or Brian Hoyer as their starting quarterback. A lot of work needs to be done to develop Love, but his tools are outstanding.
24. New Orleans Saints: Laviska Shenault Jr., WR, Colorado
New Orleans smartly brought in wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders, and he is a good contrast to Michael Thomas. Now imagine a wide receiver group with those two and Shenault, a player Sean Payton can line up all over the place on offense.
25. Minnesota Vikings: Patrick Queen, LB, LSU
Anthony Barr and Eric Kendricks are locked up for the next few years, but the Vikings could use another linebacker. Ben Gedeon has been an underwhelming fourth-round pick. Queen’s ability to chase down the ball would give the Vikings a good young linebacker to complete that unit.
26. Miami Dolphins (via Houston Texans): Xavier McKinney, S, Alabama
Putting McKinney on a defense that is being rebuilt would give head coach Brian Flores a versatile secondary player. McKinney can play single-high safety or in the slot. A secondary with Jones, McKinney, and Xavien Howard is suddenly one of the better groups in the NFL.
27. Seattle Seahawks: A.J. Epenesa, DE, Iowa
Epenesa isn’t what the Seahawks usually look for in a defensive end — he really doesn’t fit the Leo position Pete Carroll utilizes. But this is the same team that took L.J. Collier in the first round last year, so maybe their blueprint up front has changed.
28. Baltimore Ravens: Kenneth Murray, LB, Oklahoma
The Ravens added some beef on the defensive line, acquiring Michael Brockers and Calais Campbell. That should help fix the team’s run defense. Adding a linebacker like Murray could finish off the front seven.
29. Tennessee Titans: Terrell Lewis, Edge, Alabama
The Titans brought in Vic Beasley on a one-year prove it deal, so they’re not set longterm at pass rusher. Lewis could be a good rotational piece with Beasley and Harold Landry. That would help them stay fresh and give the Titans some options.
30. Green Bay Packers: Josh Jones, OT, Houston
After losing Bryan Bulaga in free agency, as expected, the Packers signed free agent Rick Wagner. Unfortunately, he never lived up to a big contract in Detroit and shouldn’t just be the assumed starter on the right side. If Jones slides, the Packers shouldn’t hesitate taking him. He’s an athletic blocker with enough power to push for a starting job as a rookie.
31. San Francisco 49ers: Tee Higgins, WR, Clemson
The 49ers swung and missed on Dante Pettis, their second-round pick in the 2018 draft. They swung and hit a home run in the second round last year with Deebo Samuel. In this loaded class of wide receivers, the 49ers could take one more swing with a big receiver like Higgins. He’s a good outside target who will go up and get the ball. He’s not the fastest wide receiver, but the 49ers have plenty of speed.
32. Kansas City Chiefs: Jeff Gladney, CB, TCU
The Super Bowl champions have been one of the quietest teams in free agency, doing little more than put the franchise tag on defensive lineman Chris Jones. The team’s needs are relatively the same, and they start at cornerback. Even if Gladney isn’t the biggest cornerback, he’s aggressive and coaches will love his style of play.

Lazarus Theatre Company’s The Taming of the Shrew
Shakespeare wrote his many plays, sonnets, etc over 400 years ago, when times were very different. Should his work, therefore, be judged against current standards of morality and political correctness? Well, probably not but I have a confession to make. There is one Shakespeare play that I have assiduously avoided. This is mainly because I have thought that no matter how the text is treated, the basic premise of the play will always be wrong from every standpoint and, rather than be entertained, I will end up incensed by the production. However, I was recently persuaded to give it a go and so headed to the Jack Studio Theatre to see Lazarus Theatre Company’s production of The Taming of the Shrew.
The production starts before it starts and, there is a great deal going on as the audience take their seats, so it is definitely worth being at the front of the queue to go in when the bell rings. However, once the play proper starts, we are introduced to Sly (Gareth Balai) for whom this production is being staged. Then we are transported to Padua in Northern Italy, Where Baptista (Dawn Bush) has a problem. The problem is, her two daughters. The younger Bianca (Sabrina Laurison) is perfect in looks and demeanor. She is permanently being chased by suitors who would like to make her their wife. Chief among these are local men Hortensio (Shiv Rabheru) and the elderly Gremio (CJ de Mooi). However, Baptista will not let Bianca be wooed or marry until her elder daughter Katherina (Charlotte Dowding) is wed. Unfortunately, Katherina is known locally for being, wilful, headstrong and never guarding her tongue, in fact a ‘shrew’ and her suitors are numbered as zero. That is until an old friend of Hortensio’s by the name of Petruchio (Mathew Foster), along with his servant Biondello (Rachel Smart) arrives in town with the intent of enjoying life and finding himself a wife. Hortensio suggests that Petruchio woo and marry Katherina and this he readily agrees to do, claiming that not only will he marry and tame ‘Kate’ he will get her to love him. Hortensio’s plan is looking good but, in an unfair twist, when the tall, handsome Lucento (Samuel Lane) arrives and falls for fair Bianca. In order to meet and woo Bianca without her mother’s knowledge, Lucentio and his servant Tranio (Evangeline Dickson) change identities so servant becomes master and master become a learned scholar giving Bianca lessons. Of course, nobody will be marrying Bianca unless Petruchio can work his magic on Katherina and that will be no walk in the park for him.
Oh, William, why did you write The Taming of the Shrew? No matter how hard one tries to think like someone from the late 1500s, it is impossible to not to get annoyed by the subject of this play which boils down to this. On marriage, a woman ceases to be a human and becomes her husband’s property to do with as he wishes. Of course, those ideas no longer hold true and – let’s be honest – Petruchio’s actions would now lead straight to a divorce court if he was lucky following a long chat with the folks in the blue uniforms about his physical and mental abuse of his spouse.
Right, I’ve got that off my chest, so let’s turn to the production. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole show from start to finish. The adaptation of the text by Writer/Director Sara Reimers really works. There is so much humour in the show that it is impossible to stay grumpy at the underlying story for too long. Even Kate’s last speech is delivered in such a way that, and maybe this is just hope on my part, made it seem that just maybe, she had been fooling Petruchio and may have actually had the upper hand herself.
Lazarus Theatre Company’s The Taming of the Shrew
There was a nice dynamic to the cast that worked extremely well. It felt as if everyone was constantly supporting each other and if something happened, would jump in and rescue their fellow performer if it was needed. The performances were a nice mixture of styles, from CJ de Mooi’s fabulously over-the-top Gremio to Mathew Foster’s measured performance as Petruchio – the original ‘man with a plan’ if ever there was one, each character was nicely portrayed, though I have to say, apart from the odd moment, Sly didn’t really do much, but he seemed to have a good time so maybe that’s no bad thing. This was true also of Bianca who did surprisingly little. Possibly this was due to the way the story had been abridged but I just felt there should be more to her tale than there actually was. As far as the production went, I loved Rachel Dingle’s set, which actually starts outside the theatre. Played in the round, with some fascinating costume and music choices, this production of The Taming of the Shrew. works very well at grabbing and holding its audience’s attention from the beginning.
Overall then, whilst I haven’t changed my mind fully about The Taming of the Shrew. I will admit that I did have a thoroughly enjoyable time watching this production. The debate over the misogyny and abuse within the story will no doubt rumble on throughout time but, if you do wish to see a highly energetic and entertaining version of the play, then this is the one I would recommend.
Review by Terry Eastham
Lazarus Theatre’s Season of Legacy continues with Shakespeare’s witty and playful, yet dark and dangerous, The Taming of the Shrew.
Kate talks too much; at least, that’s what the men of Padua think. So they persuade Petruchio to marry her and bring his wilful wife to heel.
Part farce, and part tragedy, The Taming of the Shrew dramatises society’s attempt to control and one woman’s bid to resist. Shakespeare’s witty problem play hits the stage in an all-new ensemble production, using text, movement and a contemporary score. This is Shrew not to be missed.
