Silver says that he can't lie in his Sonic Channel intro story, I don't know if I agree that he's supposed to be gullible since he's been shown to be both paranoid and perceptive at times and even the specifics of Mephiles deceiving him and Blaze have been debated. Outside of comics no one has tried to deceive him since the Rivals games so I can't say for certain.

In '06, while I think a large part of Silver's actions can be explained by his desperation about the world being destroyed and his frustration about Iblis being undefeatable, I do feel that he simply is gullible there. A complete stranger shows up and rattles about chickens and eggs and origins, and what he says checks out and provides Silver the exact solution he's been looking for! And Mephiles furthermore never tells Silver any actual lies or direct misinformation! But Silver is not shown to question anything about Mephiles' motives, why he only shows up now, why he is interested in saving the world, and why he suddenly disappears when Silver and Blaze are sent to the past to strangely reappear later and not even offer them more help. And to me, that does indicate a sense of naivete and gullibility. It's what I described in this post as well: the way I interpret is is that Silver is so honest and straight-laced and direct, he expects everyone else to be the same, for no other reason than that he is and he wants the world to be just and fair. Because he wants to save the world and undo Iblis, he expects Mephiles to share those exact same desires, just simply... because. Because it's the right thing, for him, and his line of reasoning at that point in '06 seems to be that if he thinks it is right, it is right. And that comes off as naive and not at all grounded in reality to me.

As for whether Silver is gullible in Rivals 1 and 2, I'd say a little bit yes and a lot more no than in '06. I've remarked before that Silver in the Rivals games can definitely be shrewd: he deduced correctly that "Eggman" was actually Eggman Nega based on context clues, paying good attention to what got actually said, and "Eggman's" own strange behaviours that were too familiar to the Nega he knows. He does let "Eggman" goad him into unnecessary fights with the promise that he'll be given answers if he defeats his opponents, which is then not fulfilled when he wins. But, well, the entirety of both Rivals games is built around that premise, so it wouldn't be fair to blame solely Silver for it if the manner of excuses used to start fights is nothing much deeper than "Rouge tripped Shadow", lol. So for Rivals, Silver seems to be less gullible, but his straighforward honesty mindset is definitely still present. He enters agreements with people (heroes and villains alike) who promise him information if he can fulfil their requirements multiple times despite nothing ever coming from it, and a simple "I believe you" from Espio with no further clarification for this change of heart is enough for Silver to immediately suggest a team-up despite the earlier antagonising between them. So not outright gullible and definitely more on top of the facts than in '06, but still not giving some of the situations he's in the thinking-over they require, I see it as.

The only two attempts of someone trying to 'deceive' Silver in the more recent 2010s that I can think of are Sonic in Generations where Silver states he thinks Sonic might be an imposter trying to get the Chaos Emerald, and Infinite in Forces waxing about crushing heroes and hopelessness. The former is solved easily enough with a battle ending in Sonic's favour, the latter is shot down by Silver accusing Infinite of lying and going on to the attack. But I quite like how Sonic Channel says that Silver cannot lie in his story (I believe he even specifically says it himself, right?); it aligns very well with his honest mindset, in my opinion! But overall, I figure Silver has actually become less gullible over the course of the games; he's a lot less trusting of whatever Eggman tells him in TSR and goes to his friends for help immediately after gathering information. So I do think he's come a long way from that specific bit of characterisation in '06!

Anon: Hi! I saw your recent post and was wondering if you'd share more of your thoughts on Baghra?

Hello everyone! I was honestly very surprised to see so many people interested in my thoughts on Baghra? I'll share what I can, but please know that this is by no means a full breakdown of her character! It’s just some Thoughts I’ve had, and they’re mostly centered around show Baghra because that’s how I was first introduced to her character. Although IMO book Baghra might actually be even worse.

I’d like to preface this by saying that many of my issues with the treatment of Baghra as a character in fandom come from the wild double standard there seems to be regarding her and the Darkling. Darkling Antis and a vast majority of the people in this fandom who don’t like his character have a disturbing habit of absolutely ripping into the Darkling for all of his faults and then turning around and treating Baghra as some sort of pristine mother figure for the exact same shit.

They’ll talk about how badass she is, how strong she is, how they sympathize with her past (although they’ll continue to dehumanize the Darkling and refuse to sympathize with his own past) and sympathize with the fact that she has to deal with the Darkling (who’s always referred to as a monster she must corral or control, as if he is inhumane and beastly. These particular comments always take on the very distinct tone of victim blaming as well). They’ll laud her for all of these “powerful girlboss” moments as if they aren’t carbon copies of the Darkling’s own behavior - as if they aren’t things Baghra herself taught him. Which is why this is the wildest double standard of all to me, because every horrible action they praise Baghra for is something she taught the Darkling, and something they cannot stand to see in him as well.

It’s as if there’s a disconnect between their consumption of the literature when it comes to the two characters, and I’m of the opinion that it’s largely because Baghra is a woman and a mother and therefore infantilized in the fandom quite a bit. In fact, Bardugo herself often infantilizes many of her female characters in her writing. This is mostly through the process of excusing their terrible deeds, not allowing them to do anything remotely dark, or brushing any morally grey actions under the rug without ever touching upon them. Which puts me in the strange position of knowing I’m supposed to sympathize with Baghra for having to deal with the monster she’s created, and instead feeling resentful of the fact that this bitter woman is held up as this wise old strict teacher instead of the abusive mentor/mother she should have been.

Now, here’s what I said to make so many of you send me asks:

Last note, in reference to your first line, and also probably a pretty unpopular opinion. I do not like Baghra. And it legit has nothing to do with the Darkling or with Alina, I just don't like her "I'm going to hit you and berate you and emotionally abuse you and manipulate you and act like the good guy at the end of it" vibe she's got going on. At least Aleksander is acknowledged as the villain within the narrative. Idk wtf Baghra is on but it's absolutely wild to me that people aren't more critical of her actions. Which is, rather fortunately for you, another rant I will save for another post if anybody ever wants to hear it lol. (but like kudos to Baghra's actress. I loved the character as a character, I just don't like the way she's framed as a good guy. Weird. Uncomfortable. She literally set bees on the kids she was teaching).

This basically summarizes most of my thoughts on Baghra as a character and how she’s portrayed. I touched on it a bit above, but the way she’s able to get away with so much and not suffer under heavier critique is honestly baffling to me. There should be a lot more criticism of her out there in the fandom. This is the woman who abused her students and neglected her son. Although to be honest I don’t even know how to quite describe the emotionally neglectful yet unhealthily codependent bond she fostered in him from a young age. IMO, Baghra’s behavior around Aleksander is creepy, and I know she has a history that makes it more understandable, but it’s still incredibly disconcerting to witness.

But let’s get back on track! First of all, her students. Whom she physically, emotionally, and mentally abuses. She’s derisive, she’s insulting, she’s belittling. She works hard to strip them of any self confidence they may have. She uses pain as a means of triggering powers. And the strict teacher excuse doesn’t fly. The “it’s only a training method!” excuse is even worse. This is literal abuse she’s heaping on her students and it’s wretched.

The first thing she does to Alina when they first meet is insult her. Then she hits her. Then she kicks her out.

Second time they interact is a montage. Baghra hits Alina multiple times. She shames her. And then when Alina actually calls a light she tells her it’s not nearly enough, effectively wiping the smile off of her face and every sign of self confidence that had been building. Then we see the door to Baghra’s hut shut in Alina’s face. So now she has been bruised, battered, berated, stripped of all self confidence, and then banished again. As training methods go, this is not only entirely ineffective, but it’s also just abusive.

Then we get this interaction between Alina and her friends:

Marie: One time, Baghra released a hive of bees on me. Nadia: Worst part is, it worked. Marie: It really did. I could summon at will after that.

Which is fucking horrifying and not talked about nearly enough. That goes beyond hitting your students. Baghra used a fear tactic on a young girl to activate her powers. She literally tortured Marie to make her powers work.

Alina throughout this conversation is looking very disheartened. She’s lacking in any self confidence and the comment about the bees has clearly affected her. For someone who’s first words to Alina were “Everyone believes that you are the one. Come back when you believe it too,”  Baghra doesn’t exactly seem keen on Alina actually believing she’s the one. If she did, she wouldn’t be stripping her of every positive emotion associated with sun summoning.

Let’s not forget that Baghra demeans Alina multiple times for her status as an orphan. How she utilizes what she knows of Alina’s emotional weaknesses to provoke her and discourage her and make her angry.

And then Baghra drugs her without consent. To take advantage of any information Alina gives her in that state. To use the way Alina reacts for her own ends.

Because why else would she say this?:

Alina: We planned to run away together. Baghra: You had plans. Perhaps he never did, because where is he now?

Which is, strangely enough, the same sense of isolation and separation from Mal and her past that Aleksander is attempting to foster. Weird how mother and son are both using the same manipulation tactics.

In fact, why does Baghra never tell Alina about the letters until she’s already engaged with Aleksander? Baghra must have known he was taking them. Alina talks about it enough. Baghra must have known he was isolating her from Mal. How could she not, when it’s revealed later that she has spies in the Little Palace collecting information on him? How could she not, when she knows he’s the villain from the beginning - when she knows he’s manipulating Alina?

Baghra knows, and yet she keeps the same lies Aleksander does and furthermore uses that information to make Alina feel even more isolated and weak. Baghra literally just piggy-backs on Aleksander’s manipulation and then exacerbates it. She wants Alina to feel no attachments to her past because she wants to use Alina as well. But for some reason, because this manipulation and treatment of Alina as some sort of tool is done by the woman who opposes the Darkling, it’s suddenly okay. As if it still isn’t the same terrible shit but with a different perpetrator. I mean damn, at least Aleksander feels something for Alina. Baghra’s just cold.

So, point by point. Baghra mentions how Mal doesn’t care for Alina, she mentions Alina’s failings constantly, she mentions Alina being an orphan, she constantly hits her, she guilts Alina about orphans dying, she works to instill a sense of isolation from her friends and her family.

And when Alina finally comes to Baghra, having decided to abandon her attachments to her past and her attachments to Mal, the words that ring in her head are Baghra's words - “needing anyone else is weak.”  Which is honestly just a horrible sentiment in general, but an even worse one when considering how hard these people are working to detach Alina from anybody who can help her or give her an outside perspective.

Strangely, it’s also similar to this line:

The problem with wanting, is that it makes us weak.

...which is spoken by Baghra’s son. You know, the Darkling? Our big bad villain? The one Baghra raised?

Which gives me the impression that Baghra’s teaching methods with her students are really not that far off from the teaching methods she used on him as he was growing up. It’s a horrifying thought, and leads into my problems with her relationship with Aleksander.

First of all, show wise. What the fuck.

Aleksander: They’re punishing us for being Grisha. Baghra: Punishing you. You made him afraid. Now he wants you to fear him. Aleksander: I won a war for him. Baghra: And in doing so, started a war on us.

I get that she’s trying to convey how the king feels here, but it still feels incredibly victim blamey from a narrative standpoint. It isn’t Aleksander’s fault the king fears him when he used his powers under the King’s banner to help him win a war. Aleksander trusted this man who betrayed him and then betrayed his people, and we get a line from his mother, entirely unsympathetic, talking about how it’s his fault all of these people are dying.

Baghra: Where’s the girl, your healer? Aleksander: Dead. She died because of me. Baghra: She died because they always do. They’re not as strong as you and me.

Baghra’s use of the term ‘girl’ and ‘healer' here instead of Luda is pretty telling. She either doesn’t like Luda or doesn’t care for her. Either way, this is the woman her son loves, and Baghra talks about her so dispassionately. Then he comments on Luda’s death and there’s no reaction except to say that they always do.

Like, her son is literally broken up over here. Grieving. Desperate. Run ragged. Caged and hunted. Feeling guilty as hell. Mind running through a million different ways he could possibly save all of these people. And Baghra offers him nothing except a paltry “people die, get over it, we’re better than that, she didn’t matter anyway.”

Honestly, how is Aleksander even still functioning at this point? He has no support system and he’s working against a king and his army to protect a group of civilians he could easily abandon to save himself. The sheer amount of responsibility and mental strain keeping track of a group alone entails is already monstrous, but adding in every other factor? The recent death of Luda, the fact that they’re cornered and they’ve been hunted down while fleeing across the land, the fact that he was just a couple hours ago forced to his knees and entirely at these men’s mercy, begging for Luda’s life. And here his mother is, if anything a negative support system. Offering no other ideas, telling him to give up hope, not even offering the barest smidgeon of emotional support as he grieves, putting everything on his shoulders.

It pisses me the fuck off.

Aleksander: You’re the one who taught me how to kill, mother. Their blood is on your hands as much as mine.  Baghra: I taught you so you could protect yourself. Not them.

Once more, Baghra highlights how he needs to protect himself. How he should abandon the people he’s protecting. How he shouldn't help others and only ever himself. Once more, she says it’s my way or the high way. There’s zero effort to work with him. Zero effort to sympathize or compromise. She’s constantly pushing him to take the one option she knows he won’t take. The hell did she think was going to happen?

Also, Baghra taught him how to kill. Not necessarily great parenting, but understandable given the circumstances of his upbringing. But the level to which she takes it is honestly concerning. Like, look no further than this woman to see where Aleksander got it from lol.

Baghra also forbids him from using Merzost. Which is great and all, she gets to claim the moral high ground. But she doesn’t offer a single alternative except to flee and let everybody die. There was legitimately no other option to Merzost except for torture and death. If there was, Baghra sure as hell didn’t help Aleksander come up with one. Aleksander, who - by the way - is in no fit emotional state to be making any kind of decision right now.

So anyways, that’s just my tv show grief regarding Baghra, and it’s not even really all of it. I don’t want to make this an hour long read though lmao. But I’ll go over a few other things.

First of all, Baghra’s whole “We’re the only two that matter. We have to do whatever we can to protect ourselves,” mentality is one that she actively touts to Aleksander on a regular basis when he’s incredibly young. It’s honestly a wonder he grows up to care about other people at all. But the mentality itself is something Aleksander still heavily internalized in regards to protecting himself and those he deems worthy at any cost.

There’s a moment in the books when Aleksander is attacked and nearly drowned by some kids who wanted his bones (one of which was a close friend of his). He uses the cut in self defense and then blames the nearby Otkazat’sya village. Baghra knows he’s lying, and yet she allows an entire village to get slaughtered for harming him. This is a disproportionately violent act that Baghra approves of, and Aleksander as a kid is definitely internalizing that mindset.

Also, Baghra’s behavior around Aleksander has always been weirdly possessive and controlling. Especially when it comes to the people he loves. Her actions often come across as her trying to isolate him in order to keep him by her side, even when the relationships he has are clearly intimate. Which... is especially strange for a mother to be doing to her son.

She was also an extremely emotionally neglectful mother. Based on the show and what I gathered from her actions there, I’m actually half convinced she was physically abusive as well, in that “I think I’m being a stern, good parent figure when in reality I’m actually harming my child” kind of way. She fosters codependence with her son and then refuses to provide for any of his emotional needs. She drives it into his head that everybody dies, that he’ll always be alone, that love is useless and power is everything. She denies him the opportunity to be soft and works to harden him at a young age. She tells him he must never allow people to touch him, except she doesn’t work to supplement those physical needs in any way. She essentially abuses him.

Honestly, I could go on. But in reality the simple fact is that I just don’t like her. I think she’s a hypocrite. I think she’s abusive. I think she’s a terrible mentor and an even worse mother. And I think the fandom and the books are willing to brush aside so many of her faults simply because she opposes the Darkling.

I’m sorry if this isn’t what you guys were looking for! It sounds like a lot of you wanted a more of a sophisticated breakdown, but my thoughts on Baghra come with a heap of emotional baggage lol. It feels weird to say this now, but I actually do like the character as a character, I just,,, don’t like her in every other aspect. My feelings on Baghra are just a bit personal, to be honest. But hopefully this was at least comprehensible??

Yuzuru Hanyu Q&A + reporter’s thoughts (Kateigaho 2018.03)

Interviewed in mid-August, just published in Kateigaho’s March Issue, Komatsu-san handled Yuzuru’s thoughts with clarity and warmth, something that really comes with having worked with Yuzuru for a long time over the years (Their first interview was in 2011 when he was 16). In Toronto & Tokyo A Love toward Figure Skating, Strict with Discipline

An accident that struck the champion.  Prayers from around the world. For his return at the Pyeongchang Olympics.

The first time we interviewed Hanyu was during the summer of 2011. Since then, we have been blessed with his appearance on the magazine almost every year, and after our interview in Toronto last summer (t/n referring to Media Day in August), we were also honoured with his acceptance of our invitation to a special interview in Tokyo. Always in front of crowds of officials and reporters, he must, on many occasions surely, show the speech and conduct of a gold medalist, a world champion. And actually, what I saw in Toronto was the form of someone single-mindedly devoted to his practice on ice, one who dealt with over 100 in the press corps with unbridled confidence.

Perhaps it was due to the lightheartedness of being there with his parents, there were carefree smiles abound and sometimes even a glimpse of weakness at the Tokyo interview––there was the true “Yuzuru Hanyu,” plain and bare. But what he conveyed was the exact same as when we had our first interview 6 and a half years ago, for two hours in a cafe nearby the Sendai Station––an unwavering sense of self-discipline and passion toward Figure Skating. Even when he was 16 and we first met, I was struck by the intelligence in the way he visualised his life plans after winning the gold medal at the Sochi Olympics. Speaking emphatically of his dreams this time as well, for the sake of that future vision which he holds close to heart, defending his title at the Pyeongchang Olympics remains his greatest goal right now.

I had heard that he’d somehow suppressed the pain in his right knee from before Autumn Classics as he approached the NHK Trophy. But an untimely new injury struck… Before the competition began, in both the press room and the arena, everyone seemed lost as to how they might regain composure from the shock of the star’s sudden withdrawal.

He withdrew from the NHK Trophy due to ligament damage sustained in the right foot, and then, furthermore, from the Japanese nationals due to tendon and bone inflammation. Self-disciplined and perfectionist as Hanyu, he must have been desperately undergoing rehabilitation in order to somehow make it in time for the nationals. I can imagine the frustration and regret. Yet I do wish for the grace and beauty of his skating to keep entrancing [us] for as long as possible, so, truth to be told, I was relieved when he chose to withdraw.

“The ice at Gangneung Ice Arena, venue of the Pyeongchang Olympic events, was amazing. Although I did two Quad Toeloops in the second half of my Free Skate at the Four Continents Championships (t/n planned quads in the second half were 4S3T and 4T), the execution felt really good. I also liked the air in the arena, so I think I got immersed in the competition more naturally than I did during the Sochi Olympics.” Even though people have also voiced their worries due to the Olympics becoming de facto his comeback event, the fact that Hanyu himself felt great compatibility with the venue is heartening beyond anything else. Sincerest hopes that he may recover and begin doing run-throughs as soon as possible. And then, on the stage that is the Olympics, overcoming all trials, toward yet greater heights, I pray that Hanyu can skate the programs of his dreams.

Exclusive Q&A –– Hanyu’s true thoughts to Kateigaho

Q –– The Pyeongchang Olympics is getting close. You’ve participated in all sorts of competitions up until this point, overcoming many hard battles. Even so, would you say that the Olympics is still special after all?

A –– Yes. I think it’s fine to just admit that it’s special. It’s true that I want to be saying, it’s the same as other competitions! Nothing changes! And that’s what I had been saying in the Sochi Olympics. But in the end, I wasn’t able to keep that mentality up at the Free Skate, and I was so strongly conscious of the fact that––It’s the Olympics!  I’m already well aware of that, and I’ve come to terms with it. On top of that, I’d like to seriously explore solutions to that, while I train.

Q –– Are there differences in how your SP for the Olympic season, "Ballade No.1,” and your FS, “SEIMEI,” feel  as you skate? 

A –– Actually, when the music comes on, I naturally fall into different jumps and different expression. It’s not that I’ve been purposefully differentiating between the two, but the jumps in "Ballade No.1" are fluid and smoothly blended into [the program]. Especially because the piano notes alone express everything, the jumps mustn't become some other musical instrument. Skating, spins, steps, jumps––I try to do it such that everything inhibits the same space and the same dimension as the piano notes. As for “SEIMEI,” it is easy to find its pace and phrasing as a program. The jumps are more rhythmic with greater tempo, and if the phrase lands beautifully right into the jump, then it looks all the more beautiful, and I also feel good executing it. Such pursuits, right now, are what I’m doing in figure skating. That is probably, also, my greatest weapon. When I jump and land, I feel the rush, the flow, the sense of accomplishment. Moreover, when those who are watching also feel good, then definitely the evaluations will be good too, so I want to probe thoroughly into this and I feel strongly about it.

Q –– Both are “programs where you can be yourself."

A –– That’s right. As if it’s already a part of me. My emotions and something like my sense of the music are automatically kickstarted, and I think that’s a good point about these two programs. As well as with ”Notte Stellata” and “Requiem of Heaven and Earth” and so forth… I am able to get into character completely without being conscious of it. I feel good when I skate these programs, and they make me feel glad that I’m in figure skating. Although I do get tired, those are moments when I feel blessed and contented.

“I want to be a skater with common sense and knowledge”

Q –– You’re also a college student right now. What is studying at university level indispensable for?

A –– (Immediate reply) For the sake of skating! But in my case, I’m not the type who can deal with just a little bit of everything, I either go the whole way and see it through, or I don’t do it at all––it’s one or the other for me. I really tend to do things at my own pace (wry laugh). But without a doubt, my skating improved due to my studies, and the reverse is true. Therefore, it’s not that I’m working hard to try have both coexist. Rather, it’s sort of like I do it because it’s essential.

Q –– And it’s indispensable because you actually feel it through your personal experience?

A –– Come to think of it, in figure skating, your time as a competitive skater is quite limited, isn’t it? For the sake of life afterward, I think there is a lot that I must learn right now. Plus, the first thing that my parents taught me, education level aside, was that I must live properly as someone with common sense and knowledge. This is also of the highest priority to myself; it’s fine if I just skate is a thought that's never crossed my mind. I believe that properly doing both will definitely prove to be of use for skating too.

Q –– When we interviewed you in Toronto, you brought up Anatomy as a subject you’re interested in. Are there others?

A –– Bioethics.

Q –– That still sounds hard (laughs).

A –– Actually, Bioethics is a course that I took when I was skating to “Hope & Legacy” and felt that I must ponder over the topic. Hope, legacy, life. How do you think about things that are intangible, how do you express them… I felt that it was really necessary and so I studied, but I guess the decision to do so was very much like my own way of thinking. I don’t intend to be a philosopher (laughs), but I want to be someone who can reflect on such things, so.

“Even my choice of courses at university is based on skating as evaluation criteria. I really like it after all, skating. Born to skate––that is what Hanyu is. Regarding the outfit prepared [for the photo shoot] with off-ice ease in mind, “Recently I’ve only been wearing jerseys, so (laughs) refreshing!” He could go home in the outfit as is––that’s how much he liked it.

Personally, skating practice is also where I relieve my stress. It’s similar to when you feel refreshed after crying and screaming during rough times. I think there is that in skating.

Sometimes I get tired from being "Yuzuru Hanyu"

Q –– Everything is tied to skating. Changing the topic a little, at the group interview in Toronto, you mentioned this, “There are times when I feel tired being ‘Yuzuru Hanyu’”…

A –– Yes, yes. I did (laughs).

Q –– When does the thought of “Ah, I’m a little tired” come up?

A –– (Taking a while to ponder) What is it… when I’ve lost composure in my heart, that’s it. The Yuzuru Hanyu in my mind, is someone who can skate this well, someone who can show you this much––I have such ideals, after all. When there is a huge gap [between that and reality] and I feel like there is nothing that could be done… to the extent that I wanted to throw away all titles and hide away at home––there are even times like that. But at such times, training with abandon and somehow being able to climb my way back up, that’s thanks to skating as well. That I am able to be myself is precisely because of it––there’s also that part.

Q –– It really is all about skating [for you], be it the reason you’re feeling down, or as a key to changing pace. This photo of you skipping along was taken when we first met in the summer of 2011, when you were in your first year of high school.

A –– So, so young! (Laughs)

Q –– At the time, you spoke passionately, that you “definitely want to get the gold medal at the Sochi Olympics!” and it left such an impression.

A –– That was brazen of me (wry smile).

Q –– As good as your word, just as one would expect! How did it feel actually winning the gold medal?

A –– Regarding performance, be it pre-Sochi or currently, my own personal feelings haven’t changed one bit. But circumstances around me have changed a lot after all. The Sochi Olympics probably sparked some people's interest in watching figure skating, and in many aspects, I believe [the environment] has been broadened. Plus, having experienced my first Olympics, what made me feel the Olympics was indeed spectacular was that even people who didn’t know figure skating came to the venue. Because there were other sports too. From short track, speed skate, to curling––different athletes came to cheer when it wasn’t their time to compete. In such atmosphere, I deeply sensed, “Ah––the Olympics is special."

Q –– Following the Sochi Olympics, you’ve made a second consecutive title at the Pyeongchang Olympics your goal. If you were to reach it, are you starting to find your motivation beyond that?

A –– The Quad Axel! Then again, I, love skating. Deeply. For example, Pluschenko. He participated in the team event at the Sochi Olympics and won, so actually, he went on competing until around 31 years of age. I watched his performance as a 20-year-old at the Salt Lake City Olympics in 2002 and came to like figure skating even more, that, I too would like to be in the Olympics! That time, and the overwhelming strength he displayed as gold medalist in the 2006 Turin Olympics, as well as his performance in his late-twenties at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. They all left different impressions, and each performance had their respective appeal. For that reason, figure skating is something unique, I believe. Producing results isn’t all there is to it––I felt that deeply. That’s why, personally, I’m always able to stay motivated toward figure skating. 

And then, regarding jumps, I was thinking in my mind that I would probably peak at around 23 to 24 technically, but Nobu (t/n Nobunari Oda, pro skater)! He’s amazing! He’s started jumping the Quad Lutz (laughs).

Q –– The fact that [Nobunari Oda] is further evolving from when he was actively competing is really amazing!

A –– Although he did say that he’s been losing stamina (laughs). But seeing someone like that up close, there’s no need to set limits for what you can do, in your own mind––I’ve come to believe that. I gained so much courage from him.

Q – Although it’s a matter for the future, pro skater, choreographer, coach––what would you be most interested in?

A –– Everything! I want to get to a spot where everything can coexist as an entirety. Something that only I can accomplish––I believe there has to be a path towards that, so I want to find it properly––my mission in Figure Skating.

There isn’t much time left until the start of the Olympics. My greatest rival at the Pyeongchang Olympics––I believe that is me myself. When the Sochi Olympics ended, the first thing I realised was that “the demon at the Olympics does inhabit the space within me.” The demon that I’ve been raising acts out at merely the Olympic title… I felt that keenly. Only I myself can suppress and keep it in check, and that’s why my greatest rival is myself, after all. Figure skating isn’t a sport where you come up against each other face-to-face, so rather than to go on and on about other skaters, how I train and how I bring that into the actual competition are more important.

It’s precisely due to my goal of defending my Olympic title that my every day is the way it is. There are several “first-time”’s that I’ve experienced as a Japanese men's single skater, including the Olympic gold medal. As well as imparting [my experiences] of injury and the earthquake and such, I want to think about, and eventually find in the future, a new role that only “Yuzuru Hanyu” can take up through Figure Skating.

Chapter 168: Incognito…. The Pill Stream Sect ordered all of their spies into action, hoping to be the first to find Bai Xiaochun. If they did, they would spare no cost whatsoever to kill him. As for the other three sects, they mobilized large forces to search for the disciples who were currently missing. As all that was happening, something else occurred on the Eastwood Continent, in a jungle-covered mountain range not too far from Eastwood City. Next to one particularly large tree, the air rippled with teleportation fluctuations, and then Bai Xiaochun appeared, staggering out at a near run. As soon as he was out in the open, he leaned over and vomited noisily. “What kind of teleportation was that supposed to be!? Nearly lost my poor little life in the process….” Bai Xiaochun’s face was ashen, and he was panting. What he didn’t know was that past teleportations he had experienced had been performed with weakened teleportation power in order to make them as comfortable as possible. In contrast, the teleportation which had pulled him out of the Fallen Sword Abyss was fully powered. All of the portals set up by the four sects were like that. In a moment of grave crisis, the most important thing was to teleport the targets out as quickly as possible. A forcible teleportation like that would actually knock most people unconscious. After emptying his stomach, Bai Xiaochun felt a bit better, although he was still so dizzy that he was seeing stars. Leaning up against the tree, he looked around and realized he had no idea where he was. From what Elder Ouyang Jie had explained, he knew that he could be just about anywhere. “I should be back on the Eastwood Continent though,” he thought, massaging his temples. Then he recalled the little hand and the strange voice he had heard just before being teleported away, and his heart filled with fear. Trembling, he resolved to never, ever go back to the Fallen Sword Abyss. Still trying to catch his breath, he sat down on a nearby log and looked down at his tattered garments. By this point, they were so damaged and blood-stained it wasn’t even possible to identify them as the robes of the Spirit Stream Sect. He wanted to change them, but unfortunately, didn’t have a spare set in his bag of holding. “The Fallen Sword Abyss was so brutal….” As he thought back to everything that had occurred, his scalp began to tingle. What was especially frightening was how everyone had almost gone insane in their desire to kill him. And then there was the vicious, savage battle with Song Que. In the end, he sighed. “Why do cultivators always end up fighting and killing…?” Sighing, he probed his cultivation base, and found that his roiling spiritual seas were gradually turning golden. By this point, the process was about thirty percent complete. “Hahaha! Heaven-Dao Foundation Establishment!” In his excitement, he forgot about the brutality of the Fallen Sword World. The idea of 500 years of longevity caused his eyes to shine. Flicking his sleeve and sticking his chin up, he proudly said, “I, Bai Xiaochun, am truly a consummate Chosen. Hahaha! Hahahahaha!” After laughing loudly for a while, he cleared his throat. “I guess I should probably go figure out where I am.” Something else he found interesting was that although his cultivation base was getting stronger and stronger, the aura it emitted was getting weaker and weaker. It was almost as if, because his spiritual seas were climbing to the Heaven-Dao Foundation Establishment level, all of the pressure and energy they would normally radiate was now focusing inward. At the moment, anyone who sensed his aura would place him at the ninth level of Qi Condensation. As the process continued, he had the feeling that his cultivation base aura would eventually disappear altogether, and he would seem like a mortal. Only when the process was complete would he experience a heaven-rending, earth-crushing explosion of power. “It should be finished in two days or so,” he thought excitedly. With that, he put the matters of his cultivation base aside. Next, he produced a jade slip to try to transmit a message to the sect. Unfortunately, the jade slip had been damaged during the teleportation process. Although the teleportation energy had already faded away, it seemed that he would temporarily be unable to make contact with the sect. Feeling a bit annoyed, he put the jade slip away and then transformed into a beam of light that shot up into the sky and then off into the distance. It didn’t take long for him to realize that with his current cultivation base power, he could fly much more quickly than before. He was soon out of the mountain range, whereupon he caught sight of an enormous city off in the distance. The city walls were very imposing, and were constructed from greenish-colored bricks. Furthermore, each and every brick seemed to be inscribed with magical symbols that formed a spell formation. The spell formation sent light streaming up high into the sky, seemingly connecting the city to the heavens themselves. A huge green vortex could be seen up above, with lightning occasionally dancing back and forth within it. There was also pressure weighing down which restricted the cultivation bases of any cultivators that entered the city, making it impossible for them to fly. The city was huge, enough to house at least 10,000,000 people, and had four main gates which were constantly packed with floods of people going in and out. In front of each of the city gates were enormous stone steles, inscribed with calligraphy as flamboyant as dancing dragons and swirling phoenixes. “Eastwood City!” Bai Xiaochun gaped in shock for a moment, and then his eyes lit up. This was the biggest city in the territory controlled by the Spirit Stream Sect. It was actually considered part of the Spirit Stream Sect, and was operated by the ten most powerful cultivator clans on the Eastwood Continent. It had a history stretching back 10,000 years, and was home to not only hosts of cultivators, but mortals as well. In addition to the ten great cultivator clans, there was also a disciple of the Spirit Stream Sect stationed there as an official emissary, responsible for keeping the peace among the clans. That was the exact position Du Lingfei had been sent here years ago to fill. Although she only had a Qi Condensation cultivation base, she represented the Foundation Establishment elder who was also stationed there. The elder rarely made public appearances, leaving most of the duties to Du Lingfei to handle. Her primary task was to keep the ten great clans in check. “Elder Sister Du was sent here a while back as an emissary. I haven’t seen her in such a long time….” Bai Xiaochun’s heart warmed at the thought of Du Lingfei, and he couldn’t help but picture her looking shy and angry at the same time. “Hm. I can’t just walk straight in. I’ll sneak in incognito and check things out first. After all these years, I wonder if my boo stepped out on me and found another man.” Eyebrow cocked craftily, he shot through the air toward Eastwood City. 1 As he neared, he could sense that flying was restricted. “How annoying! There was quite a line, and he didn’t feel right cutting in front, so he went to the back. Before long, he worked his way up to the gate itself, where he paid a small spirit stone tax to enter. No one paid much attention to him. All they cared about was the spirit stones. Apparently, they were confident that no one would cause any trouble. “Eastwood City is so big! I can’t believe they still charge a spirit stone tax to get in!” Bai Xiaochun was not very pleased about what was happening. Considering his status, it was really a loss of face. Coughing dryly, he clasped his hands behind his back and strutted through the gate. Once inside, the sight of the countless towering buildings caused him to gasp. Everything was huge! The roads were paved with limestone, every slab of which emanated spiritual energy. The buildings were decorated with gold and jade, carved with dragons and phoenixes, and were completely extraordinary to behold. Everything was festooned with beautiful pearls and spirit stones. The glow of magic rose up everywhere, creating an air of luxury that almost physically buffeted Bai Xiaochun in the face. “This… this place….” He swallowed as he took in the beauty and luxury. Vehicles trundled back and forth in the streets, and people could be seen everywhere. He almost felt like he was in a different world. As for the residents of the city, they dressed in silks and satins, and looked very impressive as they walked to and fro. Regardless of the level of their cultivation base, they seemed very proud and lofty. Unlike the mortals in smaller cities and villages, the mortals here didn’t seem scared or impressed at all by the cultivators around them. As he walked along, Bai Xiaochun couldn’t help but gasp in shock at all the things he was seeing. After all, he had been raised in a village, and after that, spent all his time in the sect. He had never been to a big city like this before. Of course, considering how he was looking around, he stuck out from the crowd, and the passing cultivators looked over with disdainful expressions, taking him to be a country bumpkin. Some of them noticed how his clothing was ripped and torn, and even stained with blood. Realizing that he was probably someone that shouldn’t be provoked, they quickly got out of his way. “I never could have imagined how incredible this place is!” The more he saw, the more excited he got. The sheer luxury of the place caused him to sigh, and he was already trying to figure out how to get the sect to transfer him here. Continuing to sigh, he passed one certain shop, and was suddenly riveted in place. It was a clothing shop, filled with garments of every color and style possible, all of them beautifully tailored and embroidered. Even the lowest quality garments were amazingly crafted. Bai Xiaochun couldn’t help but muse that the clothing here was far, far better looking than anything from back in the sect. Eyes shining, he walked into the shop. There were a few people inside, browsing through the selection of clothing. As soon as Bai Xiaochun entered, a couple of them looked over, and when they saw his dilapidated robes, looks of derision appeared on their faces. However, they could sense the aura of the seventh level of Qi Condensation on him, so they quickly looked away. There was one young man, dressed in luxurious garments, whose eyes went wide as soon as he saw Bai Xiaochun. For a brief moment, a strange gleam could be seen in his eyes before he averted his gaze. Meanwhile, a smiling salesperson approached Bai Xiaochun and began to show him around. “This heavenly dragon robe is made from heavenwater anaconda skin. After being cured with eighty-one types of medicinal plants, it was decorated by a grandmaster of embroidery.
