So one thing I am confused about. I see a lot of takes on how Wwx acted like a gay stereotype in the first few chapters. And this is pointed out as a mark of his homophobia (as in he's homophobic because he thinks that's how a gay person would act). But, from context of the book, it seems to me he's weaponizing what *society* will think a gay man would act like to get out of what he views as a dangerous situation? As in, to me he's deliberately playing up stereotypes... (1/2)

(2/2) to make people uncomfortable and leave him alone. This isn't to say he's not internalized some stuff. Working through those feelings is a major part of the book. But it feels like people seem to be missing the fact that he's using how people are uncomfortable with Mxy as a means to get out of what he sees as a tight situation. Rather like how we get a woman using 'lady problems' as an excuse to make men uncomfortable and leave her alone. Or am I completely of the mark?

Oh anon, dear anon, how did you know I’ve been meaning to write a post about this since I’ve first been introduced to these takes? Have you taken a trip to the dark recesses of my mind lately (or maybe spied on my drafts)?

Before we get started, I do want to address the fact that the ExR translation, which is generally how international fans first access the novel, uses terms/ways of phrasing things about cut-sleeves that make it seem more connoted than what you can see in the original chinese, thereby colouring how we may perceive WWX’s opinions on cutsleeves (since he is the narrator). If you compare pumpkinpaix’s translation of chapter 2 to that of ExR’s, you may understand what I mean (I personally went and checked the original with my limited chinese skills and pumpkinpaix’s is the most faithful translation imo).

Compare and contrast:

Pumpkinpaix’s translation: “Thank goodness, this body had not been born with a strange appearance, only strange tastes. Here was a grown man who not only wore a full face of rouge and powder, but wore it in such an ugly fashion!“

ExR scans’ translation: “Fortunately, the body wasn’t born this way—it was only one of the owner’s penchants. He was no-doubt a man, yet he was covered with makeup (not to mention, badly applied makeup). Ugh, how unbearable!“

And another:

Pumpkinpaix’s translation: “Not only chased, but banished with great shame: for Mo Xuanyu was a cutsleeve who even dared to recklessly molest and harass his peers. With this public scandal, along with the mediocrity of his talent and the insignificance of his cultivation progress, there was no reason to let him stay in the family any longer.

To make matters worse, no one knew what kind of shock he’d suffered, but after he returned, he seemed to have gone completely mad. He had good days and bad—it was as if he had been scared witless. After reading to this point, Wei Wuxian furrowed his brow. Being just a cutsleeve was one thing, but a lunatic as well! No wonder his face was all covered in powder and rouge like an old hanged ghost, and no wonder no one found the bloody array surprising.”

ExR scans’ translation: “On top of that, he was driven back shamefully.Mo XuanYu was homosexual, and had enough nerve to harass the other disciples. The scandal was revealed to the public and, as he had few achievements in terms of cultivation, there were no reasons for him to stay in the clan.Like adding frost to snow, aside from the event itself, when Mo XuanYu returned, he often behaved in a crazy manner, almost as if his life was scared out of him.The story was almost too complex to be put into words. Wei WuXian’s eyebrows twitched.Not only a lunatic, a homosexual lunatic as well. That explained why there were enough rouge and powder on his face to make him look like a hanged ghost, and also why nobody was surprised at the large, bloody array on the ground.”

See how the latter translation makes it seem as if WWX were thinking that being a gay lunatic is worse than being a lunatic, and that him being a ‘gay lunatic’ explains his appearance; whereas, in the former, it appears to be more of a comment about how MXY was perceived by his family as a disgrace, and underlines that the fact he is a “lunatic” explains how ‘usual’ his appearance and the shack’s disarray were to his cousin and his lackeys.

But to address your actual point, I think saying that WWX weaponizes what society think of how a gay would act is still an oversimplification. WWX is in fact weaponizing the very specific nature of MXY’s reputation, which includes him being known to be:

a lunatic

a cutsleeve

a molester/harasser

The fact that people even suggest that this is how WWX views gay people is ludicrous to me because of the context in which it is presented in the novel. WWX is not trying to “pass” as MXY by attempting what he believes to be an authentic performance of being a gay man. WWX, from the get-go, acts in public in ways that are incompatible with what he knows of MXY. When he first gets out of the shack, he acts in ways he knows are contrary to how MXY would have acted.

“Thinking to recover the face he’d [A-Tong] just lost, he jumped over and, like one would reprimand a dog, waved his hand and scolded, “Shoo, shoo! Go back! What did you come out for!”

Even towards a beggar or a fly, one wouldn’t be more unpleasant. These servants had very likely acted like this towards Mo Xuanyu in the past. After all, he never resisted, so they could be this unscrupulously reckless. Wei Wuxian, with a light kick, knocked A’Tong head over heels, laughing, “Now, who is it you think you’re insulting?”

Finished kicking, he followed the sound of the hubbub, walking towards the east.“ [Chapter 3 ]

Instead, WWX weaponizes MXY’s reputation (the trifecta of lunatic-cutsleeve-harasser) whenever he needs it to either 1) get the information he needs/test a theory, 2) manipulate people into certain actions 3) quickly get out of a sticky situation. Again, it is not meant to be an authentic representation of what he believes to be a gay man: it is a targeted attack with expected results.

Let’s take for instance the East Hall Scene at Mo Mansion. WWX goes there, and slips into a lunatic persona which, from what we can infer by the Mo Family’s reaction, is not even a close performance of MXY’s “lunacy”. At this point, WWX is trying to test out if publicly humiliating the Mo Family will be enough to fulfill his part of the contract MXY forced upon him. It is the first time he brings up MXY’s being a cutsleeve, and he does so in the process of trying to cause disgrace by implying his cousin might not have had pure intentions towards him. The text makes it clear that he is only doing so to attack the Mo Family’s face, implying unspeakable designs upon MXY by his cousin.

Unexpectedly, Wei Wuxian spoke again, “Speaking of, he not only shouldn’t have stolen my things, he really shouldn’t have gone to steal them in the middle of the night. Who doesn’t know, this son here likes men! He might not know shame, but I know not to tie my shoes in a melon patch!”

Madam Mo gasped in horror, shouting, “What are you saying in front of your village elders! How can you have so little face; A’Yuan is your younger cousin!”

When it came to wild displays of atrocious behavior, Wei Wuxian was a master. In the past when he ran wild, he still had to mind appearances for he couldn’t let others accuse him of having no family upbringing, but now since he was a lunatic anyways, what face did he need! He could go straight to making a scene, acting on whatever pleased him. He straightened his neck and stated with righteous confidence, “He clearly knows he’s my younger cousin, and he still didn’t try to avoid arousing suspicion—exactly who has less face?! If you don’t want any, fine, but don’t spoil my innocence! I still want to find a good man!!!” [Chapter 3]

It is also important to remember MXY’s reputation as a molester/harrasser, which WWX leans into at certain points in the novel (for instance when he gets ‘caught’ trying to steal LWJ’s seal to exit the Cloud Recesses and pretends to have been spying on him bathing to try to get kicked out instead). I do not consider that WWX actually believes at face-value the accusations; like LWJ, he is wary of judging without having all the information, having himself suffered groundless accusations (and, surprise surprise, it turns out the accusations were fabricated by JGY! btw, for all the people out there who say MXTX is homophobic because she wrote a gay character who’s a molester...... i am begging you to get some reading comprehension, even store-bought is fine at this point). And if people think MXTX did not mean to emphasize the importance of that reputation, I ask them to please pay attention to what is said before WWZ implies JC is trying to flirt with him/flirts with LWJ later on in the novel (in front, as well, of many of the Juniors). Notice how we are getting the trifecta again?:

Even after thinking it over multiple times, Jiang Cheng still couldn’t accept the fact [that Zidian had not worked]. He pointed at Wei Wuxian and scowled, “Who on Earth are you?”

Finally, a meddlesome bystander added a word to the conversation. He coughed, “Jiang-zongzhu, you might have not paid attention to these things and thus remained unaware. Mo Xuanyu was part the LanlingJin Sect’s… Ahem, he used to be a foreign disciple of the Jin Sect. But, because his spiritual powers were low and he didn’t work hard in his studies, and also had that… He harassed a peer and was thrown out of the LanlingJin Sect. I’ve also heard that he lost his marbles? In my opinion, he was probably bitter from being unable to cultivate using the correct path and ventured off onto the wrong one.”

Jiang Cheng asked, “That? What do you mean?”

“That… As in that…”

Someone couldn’t help but comment, “The cut-sleeve penchant!”

Jiang Cheng’s eyebrows twitched. His eyes which stared at Wei Wuxian seemed more disgusted than before. [Chapter 9]

The text also makes it clear that WWX is drawing upon more than just “Eww gay!” when he’s weaponizing MXY’s reputation to try to get away from JC and LWJ. He’s also thinking about JC’ inferiority complex and LWJ’s (perceived) serious nature.

“Then,” Jiang Cheng replied coldly, “why is Lan-er-gongzi going to such great lengths to protect an unimportant person such as him?”

Out of the blue, Wei Wuxian suppressed laughter could be heard.

“Jiang-zongzhu, umm, I’ll feel very troubled if you keep on bothering me like this.”

Jiang Cheng’s eyebrow twitched again. His instincts told him that this person would definitely not say anything pleasant next.

"Thank you for being so enthusiastic, but your thoughts are quite off. Even though I am attracted to men, I don’t like just any type of man, much less follow anyone who waves at me. I’m not interested in men like you.”

Wei Wuxian was purposely trying to disgust him. Jiang Cheng had always hated being defeated when compared with others, no matter how pointless the comparison was. If anyone said that he was not as good as someone else, he’d get angered and not think about anything else until he won against them. As expected, Jiang Cheng’s face darkened.

“Oh, really? Then, may I ask which type you’re interested in?

“Which type?” he replied, “Well, I am very much attracted to people like Hanguang-jun.”

Lan Wangji could not tolerate this sort of frivolous and foolish joke at all. If he felt disgusted, he would definitely draw a line between them and keep his distance. Disgusting two people at once—this was killing two birds with one stone!” [Chapter 9]

I won’t go through all the examples and moments in the novel (even in forced-voluntary self-isolation it is too much to ask out of me), but I hope my point was illustrated well enough with just these! Thank you again for your ask, it forced me to finally write it all down!

So, I kinda got a rebuttal to this ask I had sent to an "anti-shipper." I'm still pretty confused, frustrated, disappointed, and disturbed that a fair number of "anti-shippers" essentially OK’d the statements from Lindsay Ellis shown below. They, rather poorly, attempted to argue that she's not trying to portray all "anti-shippers" as being unreasonable, overly emotional, aggressive pearl clutchers who have their priorities mixed up. Even though that's clearly what she's doing here. She's using the Beetlejuice franchise as an example, a patient zero of sorts, for how "antis" (people critical of positive and romanticized depictions of abuse in media) ruin fandom with what Ellis views as unsolicited antics.

That group of so-called anti shippers also ignored how Ellis shows approval for what she describes as "an asexual couple [that] give off couple vibes." The couple in question are a 12-year-old child (Lydia) and an adult of indeterminate age (Beetlejuice). The implication here is that Ellis views the pair as a romantic couple which should be concerning to supposed antis. Those anti-shippers made no attempt to claim that that would constitute as a pedophilic relationship. And, they didn't seem even the slightest bit disturbed that, at least according to Ellis, the pedophilic ship could be canon to the Beetlejuice cartoon. Albeit, there's no real, hard proof that that's the case, it seems more like wishful thinking on the part of people who ship Lydia and Beetlejuice, but you'd think that anti-shippers would still be alarmed that child grooming and pedophilic child abuse may be being promoted in a children's cartoon.

It stands to reason that if she's fine with the elements of child grooming embedded in a relationship between Beetlejuice and Lydia, it's not a stretch that she'd be alright with shipping something like Sesshomaru and Rin from Inuyasha. Oddly enough if you really think about it, Beetlejuice x Lydia is arguably worse than Sesshomaru x Rin, because it's rumored to be a canon romantic, "asexual" be dammed, relationship between a pre-pubescent girl and a grown man. Even SessRin doesn't have that kind of baggage because canonical shipping has not occurred between Rin as a child and the young adult Sesshomaru. It's strange that these anti-shippers express more ire towards the least substantiated and comparatively less controversial pairing (SessRin) while the more contentious ship basically gets a slide (Beetlebabe). Needless to say, both pairings represent child grooming in a positive way, so they're both atrocious and it's so bizarre that some antis would be so hesitant to admit that.🤷🏽‍♀️ UPDATE 3/21/2021: In retrospect, SessRin is a much worse pairing as to date it's been canonized in Yashahime. Even so, given her comments, it's safe to say that Lindsay Ellis would definitely think SessRin was fine too.

Then, those antis completely neglected the fact that Ellis presents antis here as mostly newbie fans brought in by recent adaptations and are largely interlopers in decades-old fandoms. Such intruders resist the "ship and let ship" way of elder fans and Ellis is not having it. No matter how unfazed she tries to seem about it, she's obviously very upset by what she believes is new fandom presumably spearheaded by those darn young'uns. What I'm saying is she's giving off noxious levels of fandom mom 'tude here. However, yet again the anti-shippers, some of whom practically wrote essay-length retorts, didn't even mention her clear bias against antis and her favor towards pro-shippers.

Lindsay Ellis isn't just passing overly generalized judgment against anti-shippers in the Beetlejuice fandom, she's applying that judgment to all antis across all fandoms. To defend her statements as an anti is antithetical, contradictory, and even hypocritical. If antis side with Lindsay Ellis on these ideas, it really means that they're going against most of what they claim they stand for. And for what? Ellis has a few good takes, so you won’t oppose her in anyway when it's brought to light that she bears a clear resentment towards people who speak out against media that portrays child grooming as attractive and harmless?

Like, yo she don't like people like you, why ya stanning her? She's not only passing judgment on antis who behave badly, those who harrass, bully, make false claims and are overall very abrasive, she dislikes all antis regardless of behavior. Lindsay Ellis wouldn't consider you one of the "good" antis and she'd never want to side with you over her ilk: pro-shippers. If you're an anti with a blog devoted to anti topics, you better believe she wrote this thread to make you feel like an unwanted, purity policing intruder in fan spaces. Geez, also the fact that these "anti-shippers" are pretty tolerant of fans shipping children characters with adult characters is unnerving in how incongruous it is. "When big media corporations OK positive depictions of child grooming it's totally bad, but if fans do it, those depictions don't really affect anyone or anything. Fan-made media, especially if it's easily and publicly accessible as well as prevalent, exists in a vacuum and bears no weight on how we view and interact with our world! Anti-shippers and pro-shippers can all just coexist, guys!!!"🤦🏽‍♀️ On second thought, maybe ~anti anti fandom moms~ like Ellis would be cool with you, since you give them so much leeway. I swear, this isn't the first time I've encountered antis that are this hypocritical and backpedal on their stances, and it won't be the last.

I had also mentioned how Lindsay Ellis's defense of the Twilight Saga greatly downplayed and even omitted core criticisms of the franchise like it's racism, misogyny, and child grooming in favor of only stressing how backlash against Twilight was due to misogyny directed at the writer and fanbase. Unsurprisingly, the anti-shippers dismissed that claim without much thought despite that being an ongoing issue prevalent in many assessments of the Twilight franchise.

Anyway, if you're critical of positive and romanticized depictions of abuse in media (both mainstream and fan-made), maybe don't stan or defend Lindsay Ellis. Especially when she makes "anti anti" comments like that shown below

Team, Maia and Lucca’s interactions in 1x10 are Throwing Me, and what I’m going to do about that is list them and probably remain confused.

Maia apparently is completely comfortable going into Lucca’s office and lying down on her couch when she’s upset. I’ve never had a comparable potential work thing, but like, how many people’s furniture-behind-a-door do you invite yourself onto? not that many people’s! Lucca is unfazed by this.

Maia complains about her feelings to Lucca. White women are always complaining about their feelings to Lucca. Lucca seems okay with this particular instance of feelings and complaining and reassures Maia. Lucca does not bring up her own success except via a grin. This is probably in part to avoid stressing Maia out further but probably also because like, in what world would Maia be Lucca’s confidante? She’s a first-year associate; Lucca’s a third-year associate on a partner track. Maia’s younger not just in real-life years but also in work years. Lucca has, I must assume, actual peers.

Anyway. Maia invites Lucca to dinner tonight. She does it in a v casual way, but this as an action is 100% a convincing thing to come from Maia, largely bc I’m 100% convinced she grew up in an environment where people were often invited to come to dinner or stay to dinner. It’s clear that lots of work was done in their home, and at least Jax was close to them but lived elsewhere. And in the ten episodes of this show we’ve seen Henry and Lenore ask Maia to come or stay to dinner exactly 112 times. I mean, she’s their kid, but a casual “stay to dinner” still makes clear that they’re comfortable having their dinner plans expanded at the last minute. So yeah, I’m able to believe that Maia has invited people casually to dinner before bc she had a lot of model of that and also bc she was a law student who wasn’t broke. Like I said, 100% a convincing thing to do. But to ask Lucca? The last-minute nature of the thing and the menu choice make clear that this isn’t to thank her for her help with last week. This is an ultra-casual invitation to dinner. When did Maia decide she and Lucca had gotten so casual? Was their little high-five last week a huge turning point? She’s always seemed before to look up to Lucca a bit, and Lucca’s definitely behaved in a mentor-y way (asking Maia to tell her if she was being harrassed, giving Maia advice when they determined Henry was working with DOJ). We’ve seen Maia be friendly with Marissa, and the dynamic was definitely younger when Maia and Marissa and Jay and Yesha were all working together. But Lucca?

Lucca, of course, responds in the most Lucca possible way. I don’t remember the exact quote but it’s like “If I can.” It’s funny when you know Lucca’s going to get arrested, but also it’s a super Lucca thing to say. This is a woman who has mentioned repeatedly that she doesn’t do friends.

Maia Rindell Goes At It when Lucca gets arrested. That’s not surprising. It’s super reasonable that she cares about Lucca.

Maia goes to dinner with her parents and then has Lucca over for dinner. Since she’s not surprised, I’m guessing they arranged a time. Maia knew Lucca was coming.

Lucca comes empty-handed. Casual as hell. Lucca-instigated casual. I now hope I’m not misremembering this. (Update: went back and rewatched to check. Lucca comes empty-handed.)

More surprising to me is that she comes at all? The lady had a heck of a day, team. We know Lucca both runs and drinks, yet she is not engaging in either of these post-stressful-day activities activities. (She may have engaged in one or both earlier, but she didn’t check out for the night, she came to Maia’s house.) Is it to thank Maia for her help? Is it because she actually likes Maia? Is it because the writers don’t understand how big the difference between them could conceivably seem to one or both? I’m sure Maia has a lot of friends Lucca’s age and at that point in their careers - Amy would know them. But it doesn’t necessarily follow that those are the only people Maia could make friends with. How has Maia come to the conclusion that they are friends? Why is Lucca “I don’t have friends” “I had a friend once” “maybe she’s still my friend but I didn’t call her for advice when I had something happen that totally overlapped with her experience so like maybe not” Quinn going along with thisssss??????? Does Lucca “I don’t have friends” Quinn need people in her life that badly? Is Maia the only person offering firendship to Lucca “honestly so unbelievably nice to many many people” Quinn? There’s no way okay.

Maia has lit six million candles. Not casual. Kind of weird. We have no evidence that Maia always does this. Wtf.

Anyway, Maia greets Lucca as “My convict!” which is hilarious and precious and nobody cares that it’s not true, and Lucca responds “My lawyer!” and it’s all very cute. Lucca congratulates Maia on having “fucking killed it in court.” Lucca walks in very comfortably and tells Maia it’s like a soft porn movie. Maia doesn’t take Lucca’s coat, but it does disappear. Maia gives Lucca wine, but she doesn’t invite her to sit down.

They talk about how weird this time has been - but just last week, Lucca was speaking about the weirdness basically in future tense. It’s been weird for Maia, who is hoping now for normalcy, but it hasn’t been that weird for Lucca. I get that the firm has had some stuff happen, but “I think my fourth is going to be” - Lucca was anticipating weirdness last week, but not talking about how much weirdness there had already been. So they’re basically talking about Maia. Maybe Lucca is just here to thank Maia.

That possibility is affirmed both by the fact that she thanks Maia and by the fact that she behaves as though she is totally chill with cold mac and cheese for dinner.

BUT Maia asks whether everything is okay with Colin and Lucca says “not really.” So they do gossip? Lucca doesn’t prevaricate here; her answer isn’t guarded or overly positive. Lucca is participating in this bonding-style event. Why is Lucca, of all people, participating in this bonding-style event?

Maia Rindell, I’m glad you’re comfortable inviting people over to your home to feed them, but surely you understand that cold mac and cheese when you invited someone over to your home to feed them is basically only something you inflict on your best friend. Obscenely casual menu.

So basically, these two people have entered a zone of unbelievable chill seemingly in the half-second when they high-fived despite only having interacted before at work, where the power difference between them is nontrivial and yep, I was right, I still don’t know how it happened. Lucca “dumps the boytoy on a plausible rumor conveyed by an asshole” Quinn would be totally able to tell Maia “feet on the couch” Rindell if she was overstepping by, like, feet on the couch. So it seems like she’s willing to have this weird kid around. And I can get to her going to Maia’s for dinner to thank her, but she’s being v friendly.

But I have a hard time imagining Maia “infant child” Rindell as the new friend of Lucca Quinn. The one friend Lucca Quinn has ever had in her life before had achieved antiheroine status by the time she met Lucca, okay, and the boytoy got in with her by snark. I have a hard time imagining an epic broship between Lucca “loves job” Quinn and Maia “call girlfriend to ask random question instead of ChumHumming it” Rindell, or between Lucca “I don’t get hurt by boys” Quinn and Maia “fresh face” “kid” “not familiar with the concept of functioning in the world” “I probably also don't get hurt by boys but like” Rindell. Lucca and Amy? Plausible friends. And obviously Maia and Amy get along, and I think Lucca and Maia could become friends or something friend-like through working together, but not through sudden spontaneous bonding? Lucca really doesn’t seem the type for sudden spontaneous bonding. Basically this all confuses me. I like the idea of the broship, and in Maia’s more self-possessed moments (“My convict!”), I get it. But Maia’s more self-possessed moments are few and far between, and on screen, they’re way less common at work (where Lucca is) than at home. So basically, yeah, I like the broship, I suppoert the broship, but I don’t...believe the broship? And I’m not sure it’s totally clear from the episode whether Lucca believes the broship, but I don’t understand why she’s so open and unguarded at the end of the day with Maia Rindell.

Hi guys, well let me start with what happened first. I am a college student and so I live in an apartment and park my car next to a whole bunch of other cars. Is it possible to get different car insurance under the same household?

Hi, So I have a question regarding different car insurance. MY family has allstate for the car insurance. However, I do not want to go under allstate for family reasons. I am trying to get geico for my car. However, my father states that if you were to get geico you would still have to add everyone's name under the insurance policy. I am trying to get my own individual policy without adding anyone under the car insurance policy. I wanted to know if it is possible to get different car insurance under the same household? Hey and thanks in advance! My car is in my ex name 100% on the loan and the car insurance, but i make the payments to my ex as they take the money from my ex bank account. Im not even on the car as a second driver. Well now my ex wants the insurance in my name, would i be able to obtain insurance in my name (full coverage) for the car without the car being in my name, if i was to show them me and my ex personal contract. and lets say the insurance people is fine with it, would the bank where my ex took out the loan be ok with full coverage in my name over the car? please, this was a lessoned learn and now i need help on how this can be done, my ex no longer want his name on the insurance.""

Classic car for a teenager?

Coming up to my 17th birthday soon and i need to buy a car. The sort of car i like is the plymouth cuda 1970 opel manta 72 ford cortina 72 chevy 69 So that kind of muscle car look.
