The Best Roasted Chicken Ever
Soooo. I'm gonna post the recipe and try not to be obnoxious....this came from a newspaper many moons ago, clipped out by my parents. Since then, it's shifted....there's thing I *personally* would recommend doing differently.....so I'll include those here:
Ingredients:
-4 chicken breasts with bone/skin (truth be told, we switched this to chicken thighs and have not been disappointed)
-1 clove garlic*
-1 tsp. Minced Fresh Parsley (...you can get the packaged stuff lol)
-1/4 tsp. Crushed dried oregano
-1 tsp Dijon mustard*
-2 tsp Fresh Lemon Juice
-2 TBs Olive Oil
-Salt/Pepper
Preheat the oven to 350. Line pan with chicken (recommend foil on the pan, unless you have a drip tray type of pan). Mix together all other ingredients, stir well. Flip the chickens over (so, bottoms up!), spoon it on, smooth it around a bit. Flip them over again, spoon it on the top of the chicken, covering all sides. Use more sauce on the top than on the bottom. I don't rub the mixture in DEEPLY....just spoon 'er on and smooth it around. This will get cooked for at least one hour. In one version of the old-school instructions, you cover/tent the chicken, cook for 20 mins. Remove the tent, cook for 40 mins. (read below....i don't do this haha).
OK. SOME NOTES:
-Typically we increase the amount of sauce we make depending on the size of the chickens. Ex: we used 8 smaller chicken thighs the other night, and this recipe was then made x5. If not, you didn't get a good coat on the chicken. It's really easy to make the mixture, so if you need to throw together some more, no big deal.
-This version of the recipe gives you more of an oil-based mixture....so in truth, we prob add about 2-3 more tsp of Dijon mustard. Meaning it becomes more mustard based/thicker FOR SURE. You'll be able to see this if you make it. Juuuuust be very liberal/extra with it (the mustard), trust me, it works. It's way better in flavor.
-Same note for garlic....we usually make it so that its +mustard and + garlic. I'd love to give you a measurement....and maybe its 2 ish more tsp of garlic as well (on the last package, 1 clove = 1 tsp)
-we stopped doing the tent and stick to close the the 1 hour....though AGAIN....the other night, it was in the oven for 1.5 hours. (and being that they were thighs, no problem). The goal is to get a nice brown skin on there....crusty if possible. In the past we used to burn it....eeeever so slightly. also delicious. I've not tried this mixture with boneless/skinless.
In other words....i gave you a recipe....now go fix it HAHA.
The smell during cooking is one to be experienced. it's so SO SOSOSOSOSO good!
Hope someone tries it :)

hey! im back! 2.3 story thoughts!
but before that I got e1s1 firefly :3 might go for e2 depending on how i feel
Found Family Stellaron Hunters My Beloved
Jade, Topaz, and Oti: Discussing shares and money or whatever the fuck. Me: *eating popcorn and understanding maybe half of it*
Getting an outside perspective on the Trailblazer's shenanigans was a treat. TB is no longer silent and is a menace
Loved the Firefly sections (what a surprise) and it was nice to see more of her thought process and attitude. She desperately wants to fight against her predetermined end and live the life she wants. She deserves everything including all my jades
Also! The Stellaron Hunters (or most likely Elio with the rest by association) follow the Finality! Pretty sure everyone expected this but. Wild!
The group chat was fantastic. I will never get over Ratio going "k" and then leaving immediately (and of course still helping later)
I got spoiled on the buttons being fireworks so the tension for Firefly's "sacrifice" was not really there but the cutscene? Beautiful. Can't believe SAM princess carrying the Trailblazer is now canon
The new song is really nice as well. Idk how to explain it but the start with the piano reminds me of Beyond the Sky from Xenoblade 1 lol
SILVER WOLF HIRED SPARKLE TO KEEP FIREFLY OUT OF DANGER SHES A FUCKING SAP I LOVE FOUND FAMILY STELLARON HUNTERS
The final goodbyes and toasts got me emotional. All the Astral Express having things to say, March's little speech, and Pom-pom's crying. I love the Nameless so much
Also the final page of the Penacony guidebook reveals that the writer was Razalina. I'm glad she got something since she was the Nameless with the least going on in the story
I apparently missed an interesting scene with Acheron because I pressed the wrong dialogue option... It sounds like it was a HI3 reference so maybe it wouldn't have meant much to me anyway
So Jade broke out Sunday because of a deal with Robin. They drill it into you that Jade has some pretty harsh deals so what did Robin give up then? I've seen the theory that Robin gave up the memories of/connection with her brother and 🥺 terrified of being hit with even more sibling tragedy
One hole in this is that Robin on the Express mentions Sunday. I know that these aren't super canon or anything but it feels like a discrepancy worth noting (note: i am coping)
And Stellaron Hunter Sunday is a pretty popular theory at this point. Wonder how that's all gonna go down and if it will even happen like that in the end. The possibility that he will decide to continue with his ideals and not change despite being beaten in with the power of friendship (and a train)? I'm honestly interested in the idea, it feels like the opposite of what people would expect
Trailblazer: I can fix him. Elio (or Jade?): Well I can make him worse watch this
Overall it really felt like a fitting send off to Penacony that also set up a bunch of stuff that can show up in future quests (which is exactly what I thought would be the case)

more like the hypocratic oath
Fuck the Hippocratic Oath.
I've always loved to memorize things from a young age. I'm 26, and I still see the same doctor that saw my mother 10 years before my birth. So I've spent a LOT of time in her waiting room, unchanged for decades. She has a weird obsession with lighthouses. Also, a framed text of the Hippocratic Oath on the wall.
Being the only thing to read in the room, over the years, I kind of accidentally memorized it. It's shorter than most people think.
It's never really been useful. Whenever it would come up in conversation I'd sometimes say "did you know that 'First do no harm' isn't actually in the Oath?" but most people didn't believe me. I didn't really care. It never came up, and it was never really important.
But this week alone I've read 6 references to the Oath in the news, had 3 conversations about it, and had to nope out of countless Reddit threads, all along these same lines:
"Why can't we lower the priority of anti-vaxxers who need to be in the ICU?" The Hippocratic Oath, of course! First, do no harm. Second, triage according to whoever needs the most care the most urgently. Third, forget the first two because neither of those things, not even in sentiment, are in the Oath.
There's a LOT of people who seem to have been indoctrinated into following a dogma they don't even know the contents of. They hear "Hippocratic Oath" and instantly think "First, do no harm" and then stop there. Because we think we know the gist. "Don't wield your power of being a doctor to become an evil monster." You should be right, but you're not.
If we're going to argue medical ethics, let's see what this amazing oath is really all about.
It starts out pretty normal. Swearing to Apollo. "[A]nd Asclepius, by Hygieia, by Panacea, and by all the gods and goddesses". Normal stuff. Oh, your doctor doesn't believe in Apollo? Breaking the Oath.
But then we get to the good stuff. Y'know what's so important that the Hippocratic Oath decided to address it directly and by name? Abortion. As in, "I will not give to a woman a pessary to cause abortion". Forget what a pessary is, it's an ancient medical device. So, the entire profession of performing abortions? Breaking the Oath.
But hey, abortion's a touchy subject. What about something as neutral as kidney stones? Well, "I will not use the knife, not even, verily, on sufferers from [kidney]stone[s]". Weird how if I were to walk into an ER with a kidney stone the size of a kidney bean they'd cut it out. With a knife. Verily. Breaking the Oath.
It's not all bad or oddly specific. The last bit basically says "If I walk into your house, I won't abuse you, even if you're a slave." How kind! And lastly, patient confidentiality. The end.
...Except, the Oath was rewritten in 1964. It cut out the abortion and kidney stone bits and comes in the form of modern English. Since it's not too long and wordy like the original, here's the full text of the "modern" Hippocratic Oath: (I'm cutting the first and last lines that just say 'here's the oath' and 'that was the oath', emphasis is mine to talk about after.)
"I will respect the hard-won scientific gains of those physicians in whose steps I walk, and gladly share such knowledge as is mine with those who are to follow.
"I will apply, for the benefit of the sick, all measures required, avoiding those twin traps of overtreatment and therapeutic nihilism.
"I will remember that there is art to medicine as well as science, and that warmth, sympathy, and understanding may outweigh the surgeon's knife or the chemist's drug.
"I will not be ashamed to say "I know not", nor will I fail to call in my colleagues when the skills of another are needed for a patient's recovery.
"I will respect the privacy of my patients, for their problems are not disclosed to me that the world may know. Most especially must I tread with care in matters of life and death. If it is given me to save a life, all thanks. But it may also be within my power to take a life; this awesome responsibility must be faced with great humbleness and awareness of my own frailty. Above all, I must not play at God.
"I will remember that I do not treat a fever chart, a cancerous growth, but a sick human being, whose illness may affect the person's family and economic stability. My responsibility includes these related problems, if I am to care adequately for the sick.
"I will prevent disease whenever I can, for prevention is preferable to cure.
"I will remember that I remain a member of society, with special obligations to all my fellow human beings, those sound of mind and body as well as the infirm."
Let's work backwards. The last line I emphasized because I think it comes closest to being a good argument for why anti-vaxxers should be allowed to clog up our ICUs. Doctors have "special obligations" (which isn't specific enough for me) to all humans, even the "infirm". At a glance it seems like this says "Doctors have to help people who are well as well as those who are ill" but "sound of mind" really jumped out at me. To me, it is not of sound mind to be anti-vaccine. If "infirm" is the opposite of "sound of mind", then anti-vaxxers are entitled, like all humans, to whatever "special obligations" the doctors have. Like I said, I don't find that phrase specific enough for me to accept this as an argument, but it does come close. If we define "special obligations" as "the obligation to provide medical care", then yes, put all anti-vax Covid patients in the ICU. But "special obligations" could just as well mean "the obligation to put the needs of the many over the needs of the few", which is supported by the statement's previous allusion to being a member of society, in which case, kick those fuckers out on the street.
The second point I highlighted just because this was written by and for America, and somehow they remain the only developed nation where one's "economic stability" is absolutely never taken into consideration.
Finally, my big closer. Life and death. "If I manage to save a life, great, cool. But also sometimes I'm allowed to kill people. No, I will not elaborate".
But it has another meaning: "As a doctor, sometimes I will necessarily have to kill people." This is simply one of those times. I'm serious. If not now, when?
I highlighted the very first line because I think it sets the tone for the entire Oath, and because I believe that actively choosing to treat anti-vaxxers instead of people with "lesser" problems, that choosing to allocate ICUs to people who spit on your science is violating the directive to follow the "hard-won scientific gains of those physicians in whose steps I walk". I can't imagine a 1940s TB nurse being teleported to present day, informed about Covid, taking a look at our hospitals and saying "well done".
It's a good thing it doesn't actually say "do no harm", because the Oath itself has violated that directive. As Ontario's ICUs continue to rise, doctors continue to harm society because they think triage is part of the Oath. It's not. Stop pretending it's anything more than a contract you sign when you work at fuckin McDonalds and you promise not to make dumb Tik Toks at work. Every job has its moral standards. Doctors have one of the most ethically and morally difficult jobs on the planet, yet we treat medical ethics as a settled matter.
The original was written in 275AD. It was rewritten 60 years ago. Maybe let's not wait another millennium to fix this glaring problem that isn't going to go away. In the meantime, let's try and work from actual facts and not what we think we know. A tall order these days unfortunately.
Stay Greater, Flamingos.

oh my god i caught up on anons in time for TB&TB Part 6. jk i forgot two. i can’t believe i’ve done this.
1. Of course! I always try to find someone to take a request if I can’t. Especially if I know that they’ll do it justice -- and they definitely will. I already saw a snippet of what they have so far and it looks great.
2. Heads up that reidetic (maggie) uses they/them pronouns (and just added them to their profile in case you forget!) That being said, they are so lovely and you should send them Anons! I showed them this message and they were very tickled by it. I promise they won’t bite.
3. Congratulations on making it through your 1L! You’re almost done with it! Props to you for doing it on Zoom, too. Geez. I could barely make it through my seminars in my last semester.
If you ever wanna chat law school stuff, feel free to shoot me a DM! I appreciate you, too, and I know thats gotta be hard.
4. Oh, gosh, you all have so much faith in me! I have absolutely no idea what my word counts will be until I start writing, lmao. As for how many parts, I’d say 2-4? Probably 3. They’ll likely be similar word counts to the rest. No idea, though.
TW: Answers from this point on address sexual themes, genitalia, and sexual trauma
5. There are a lot of reasons why you might feel sore or bleed a little after use with a toy, or even digital or clitoral stimulation. If it happens often, I recommend you talk about it with a physician. It is completely normal for you to see some leftover menstrual blood or occasional spotting after powerful orgasms, since they cause muscle contractions, but you should not be experiencing fresh blood.
It could be as simple as, again, underestimating how much lube or foreplay is needed. You might have a slight, mild allergy to whatever the toy is made of. There are also more serious reasons that might cause bleeding with penetration or sexual activity that need to be addressed - including STIs, HPV, polyps, or cervical cancer. These are all easily addressed during a yearly Pap.
If I had to guess, you probably just need to buy some lube (there is no shame in this, idk why people feel like it’s awkward or means they are deficient somehow... I use it when I’m feeling lazy lmao). But it’s best to bring it up with a gyno, who can do a physical exam and make sure that there is nothing more nefarious going on.
6. So, this is a difficult question for me to answer for a lot of reasons. Pelvic floor pain, particularly during intercourse, is reported by a large group of sexual assault survivors. They have yet to link to any specific disorder, so it’s difficult to know how to fix it.
That being said, if things are physically painful, and you have the insurance to cover it, you should consider consulting with a pelvic floor physical therapists to ensure that you are not experiencing a biological phenomenon which can be fixed easily.
It’s also very possible that the pain is psychosomatic (which does NOT mean made up or fake - the pain you feel is very real and equally distressing) and is better addressed by a psychologist. In my case, I experienced both of these types of pain. A lot of my pain went away when I finally found a comfortable, safe partner. But I still experience a lot of pain from my biological causes, as well.
A physical therapy consultation won’t do damage, assuming you find a trusted provider (read reviews!) and go into it with the knowledge that they will have to do an internal exam. Most of that field is made up of women, and they tend to be extremely aware of the long-term effects of sexual abuse, so they should be willing to do whatever you need to be comfortable. If they are not, then leave the room immediately and find someone else. My pelvic floor treatments were remarkably painful (but worth it). You do not want to associate even more bad things with that area of your body.
My physio was absolutely amazing and helped me with a lot far beyond the physical. I hope you can find someone like that, too, who can bring you some relief.

The 13 Scariest Paranormal Investigation TV Show Episodes You Need To Watch - And The Links To Watch Them For Free!
As a paranormal blogger, I’m used to fangirling with other occult-obsessives about anything that’s spooky.
It could be a scary movie. It could be a ghost they’ve seen first hand. It could even be an urban legend that frightened them to their very core! Either way, they always have a turning point in their life that pushed them towards the paranormal.
My epiphany was different.
Sure, I’ve always had this constant connection with otherworldly spirits - but it was developed by one thing: paranormal documentary TV shows.
Most Haunted, Ghost Adventures, Celebrity Ghost Stories…
Each and every one made me want to be there with them!
I wanted to wander ‘round castles for a living. I wanted to read ghost stories everyday and explore the history behind them. I wanted to connect the dots and explore a new, hidden world.
It’s for that reason that I’ve decided to share my love for these shows with you, dear reader.
I’ve brought together the best episodes from Most Haunted, Ghost Adventures, Paranormal Lockdown, Celebrity Ghost Stories, Ghost Hunters and Paranormal Witness, explained the ghost stories that are the centre of the episodes, and have even provided links (and the terrifying timestamps) to the episodes.
All you’ve got to do is press play!
Oh, and leave a comment on which one traumatised you the most…
Now, let’s get spooky.
#1 - The Dorothy Puente Murder House - Ghost Adventures (S12, E3)
Ghosts give me the heebeejeebies. Demons make me want to hide under my quilt and cry to a Sigrid song. But it’s stories of entrapment that really fuck me up.
This is one of those stories.
Dorothy Puente was a landlady who ran a boarding house in California for elderly and mentally disabled residents. Don’t be fooled by her charitable exterior, though - what was happening inside the boarding house was a very different story.
Puente was a serial killer who committed 9 murders - a number which is still disputed to this day - throughout the 1980s, and then cashed their social security checks.
Whilst there are a number of details to this case, I thought I’d leave that to be discovered during the episode.
Nevertheless, I thought I’d wet your appetite with some seriously traumatising tales:
In 1985, she hired someone to do wood panelling in her apartment. Not only did she give him an old pickup truck that I assume contained traces of evidence of her crimes, she asked him to build a 6-by-3-by-2 foot box. In non-maths terms, that’s the dimensions of a coffin.
Claiming it was full of books and other small items for disposal, she journeyed with him to a local dump to dispose of these, uh, books, and stopped him before they reached the local area to dump the waste.
She directed him to instead drop it into a river cause that’s not suspicious at all.
But suspicions were roused when she began repeatedly hiring a local homeless man to do certain tasks like digging the basement and removing soil from it, or putting concrete in the garage. It was when he disappeared that the pieces began to connect together.
Given the dark details behind the case, when Zak Bagans and his squad rocked up, they were on the receiving end some of the most striking paranormal activity they had ever witnessed:
Featuring EVPs crammed full of aggressive growls and demands for them to “Get out!”, or Ovilus Voices spewing words eerily similar to the murders and how the bodies were disposed of, this investigation stays true to what happened there.
But outside of the equipment used, the physical effects on the investigators was incredible!
One medium felt a choking sensation believed to channel the feelings of victims being force fed sleeping pills and then left to die in the Death Room. And the other? She drew a picture uncomfortably similar to a spirit seen by a tenant of the house - the spirit of Dorothy Puente.
The other physical contact experienced includes pain felt in Zak’s lower back, as well as Zak entering this trance like state from which he fell off the bed!
Here’s the episode:
https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x55gpad
Want to seem some spooks, like, right now?
09.10 - an EVP with Peggy, the resident who sees Puente’s spirit frequently.
13.10 - a medium begins to sense spirits and experiences some shocking effects.
17.30 - a medium produces pictures of the spirit she senses.
25.20 - EVPs in the backyard - where the bodies were buried - answer some of the questions that still go unanswered.
30.20 - Zak Bagans begins to exhibit extremely peculiar behaviour.
#2 - Idaho State Tuberculosis Hospital - Ghost Adventures (S18, E10)
Whispers, children and angry old men.
No, it’s not the title of Fall Out Boy’s latest album - it’s just a few of the current inhabitants of The Gooding Inn.
Once a TB hospital that was shut down in 1976, this building has witnessed its patients literally choke and drown in their own blood as their lungs fill up.
But what’s seriously scary about this episode is the effects on the most recent residents of the inn:
Not only was the housekeeper clearly upset about her encounter with an angry male ghost, she clearly feels the negative energy such spirits embody.
But it's when the current resident is interviewed that the reality of this location is realised. Two of her children had died whilst living in the former hospital, forging a strange link that is explored in the episode.
Yet before I spoil the whole show, here’s a taste of what’s to come:
A playful child spirit and a woman with a child make their own appearances, as well as the strange tale - and even stranger spirit - of Anton Beaver.
Ready to watch?
Here’s the episode:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tdCxNtshvhg
Looking for a quick fear fix?
These are the timestamps of note:
05.25 - Zak Bagans starts the show with the housekeeper’s own tale of the hauntings she’s witnessed.
10.00 - One woman recounts the potential impact of the hauntings on her family.
12.15 - a paranormal investigator brings his own footage and experience of activity in a passage from which gurneys and wheelchairs would bring in the patients
16.00 - Zak Bagans researches those who died there - and creates a sudden shockwave of paranormal activity across the building.
21.50 - a weird non-human noise is heard when a dark shadow appears.
32.00 - pranks set by a spirit of a former child patient begin to haunt the team.
#3 - 30 East Drive - Most Haunted (S18, E1 Halloween Special)
Take a look around my blog - no, seriously, look at what I write about: old manors, haunted abbeys, demonic forests… They all seem to stand out. And I think that’s what makes this tale - and this episode - quite so scary.
Welcome to 30 East Drive, a council house nestled in Yorkshire, England.
It started in 1966. The Prichtard family had just moved into a new home when they started to notice rather peculiar occurrences:
A fine layer of dust fell on everything in the house, puddles would appear from nowhere, even if one was cleaned up, the tea dispenser would go off randomly, and items would levitate!
Given the evident paranormal resident, clergymen were called to exorcise the house.
They were not successful. Holy water would leak out of the walls, ghostly hands would appear and ‘conduct’ the hymns being said to remove him, faces were slapped and people were pushed. Despite the rather playful poltergeist at first, this spirit slowly became more aggressive:
The daughter, Diane, began to find scrapes and bruises appear on her body, and was even dragged up the stairs by her hair! It was eventually deduced that this could be the spirit of a Monk whose body was discarded down the well that the house now sits on. Why was he thrown down a well?
Because he - or perhaps his twin brother - raped and murdered a young girl.
And as he is often seen wearing black robes, the house was given labelled the Black Monk House. Fancy a watch? You’ll be spoiled for choice then - Paranormal Lockdown also had a stay in the house.
Here’s the Most Haunted Episode:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dO3EeYBGNuo
“But, spookyllama, where are the timestamps?”
I couldn’t find any timestamps of note because the activity in this episode is constant!
Within the first 1 and a half minutes, a marble is thrown, echoing one of the most common hauntings in this house. Knives were also found sticking out of sofas, as was a crucifix jumping off the bed.
#4 - The Wentworth Woodhouse - Most Haunted (S17, E6)
Our next episode also features a ghostly monk, but this time we see activity beyond marbles being chucked at cameramen. Indeed, this episode is just as iconic as the former - this is due to the controversy surrounding the evidence captured in this video.
One of the most famous hauntings of the Wentworth Woodhouse is the first earl of the house walking down the main stairs of the house. Only he’s headless. And they claimed to capture this footage:
https://www.mirror.co.uk/tv/tv-news/most-haunted-team-finally-catch-12417869
This footage only taps into one component of the paranormal activity seen in this house, however.
This house has seen centuries worth of aristocratic family feuds, deaths and drama which still roam its halls. Whether its footsteps, ghostly laughter or opera singing, it seems all past residents never actually left.
Yet aside from the earl taking a nightly stroll, the scariest spirit has to be a ghost that stands still during his hauntings, leading many people to think he’s a statue.
Specifically, the most haunted locations - aside from the library - are the George VI quarters. With shadows tracing the walls and dark figures standing in the doorways, the Most Haunted team were certainly not alone.
You can see the episode here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdTnJC4cO54
Want a speedy scare?
28.00 - a door rattles and sounds as if its being opened, only its not - it’s locked and there’s no handle.
30.00 - The team hears a whistle, so they whistle back. What happens next is mind-blowing…
50.00 - The crew hears a couple of footsteps follow them around a part of the house.
#5 - The Washoe Club - Ghost Adventures (S16, E7)
The Ghost Adventures team might have investigated this wild-west location 3 times, but it gets no less spooky as time goes on. The oldest saloon there, The Millionaires’ Club, is the centre of the activity as a former exclusive saloon for rich businessmen.
Upon Zak Bagans and his team’s final return, they are reduced to tears by the activity witnessed.
This activity includes the spirit of a prostitute who committed suicide in room 77, a full-bodied apparition in the ballroom, a brick thrown in the basement and a women, Lena, haunting the staircase.
The episodes in particular have also captured EVPs saying their names: “Zak, look out”, and "Nick, Zak, coming..., they're scaring me".
Ready for a trip to the Wild West?
https://www.dailymotion.com/video/xqhyh6
#6 - Hinsdale House - Paranormal Lockdown (S1, E5)
If you thought these buildings were scary, wait ‘til you hear about the Hinsdale House. Question is, what separates it from the other contenders?
This is a demonic haunting.
Considered this generation’s Amityville, the whole property exhibits signs of activity an exorcism couldn't rid it of: mysterious phone calls, chanting from nearby woods, animal hybrids and full bodied apparitions are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to this house.
Lucky for us, the Paranormal Lockdown team spent 72 hours here, investigating the hauntings both during the day and night.
Within the first 7 minutes of filming, an abundance of flies fills the house, not unlike horror films that trace the stories behind houses just like this. The following emotional impact on Nick further forges a link to the supernatural.
Featuring choking, consistent EVP’s saying Nick’s name and even Lorraine Warren on the blower telling them to get out of the house, negative energy is an understatement for this house.
You can watch it here:
https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6tujvf
Head to 25.00 if you want to see their investigation of the forest - including the Gregorian chanting that is claimed to still echo on this former Native American burial ground.
28.00 - when Katrina asks spirits to go to Nick and show their presence when he’s in a different room, the spirits follow orders.
Unfortunately, the spooks don’t end when the credits roll:
Nick claims spirits from this house followed him home and told him to go to a little house tucked away in England.
And that house was 30 East Drive.
#7 - 30 East Drive - Paranormal Lockdown (S2, Halloween Special)
So, we know Most Haunted’s verdict of the Black Monk House - what about Nick and Katrina’s?
Having spent 100 hours there - one of the longest amounts of time they’ve been in lockdown for - they witness apparitions, marbles flying across the house, a scar appears on Katrina’s stomach, and even a murder attempt by the spirit.
That’s right - a Grandfather clock is pushed over, nearly killing Nick!
You can watch that happen here:
https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6azzx0
#8 - The St. Augustine Lighthouse - Ghost Adventures (S2, E19)
Haunted locations aren’t just famed for paranormal fanatics like me rocking up.
It’s the history which matters.
And this haunted lighthouse is celebrated for its history with its own museum denoting the things it was witnessed as a part of America’s Oldest Port. And with multiple people living and dying on the property, the subsequent variety of activity is what sets this lighthouse apart from, well, non-haunted lighthouses!
But it's that history repeating itself that makes this one of the scariest episodes included on this list: a woman in white roams both the nearby forest and the top levels of the lighthouse, a man walking in uniform wanders round the basement, and spirits make use of the famous staircase that fills this building.
Have I piqued your interest? You can satisfy your supernatural needs here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHsNtvT8uHU
Check out the walk through of the lighthouse and description of the main activity at 05.30.
19.45 - you can hear the chattering of multiple spirits on the staircase - and you might even see someone - or something - walking down it, too.
24.00 - this is the most incredible evidence they’ve ever captured - trust me.
#9 - The Stanley Hotel - Ghost Hunters (S2, E22)
Famous for inspiring the Stephen King classic, The Shining, this hotel is infamous for its real life haunted history. First opened in 1909, the 420 rooms - including an underground cave system - hold many ghosts who still make regular appearances.
Room 217 for example, once belonged to a housekeeper. Often visitors to this room notice their luggage is unpacked, items moving, or the lights flickering. Oh, and she’s not a fan of couples sleeping together in the same room, either!
After that, why not visit the Concert Hall? Haunted by a spirit who was once believed to be an usher, you may hear a voice telling you to leave, a nudge, or even see flashes of light of his torch.
You might even hear the giggle of a child echoing down from the attic, a former nursery.
Question is, why is it quite so haunted? There’s 2 claims behind this: the crystals in the cave system below the hotel channel the energy, and the staircase is a vortex for ghosts, allowing them to come and go as they please.

#10 - The Rain Man - Paranormal Witness (S1, E6)
Ghosts and spirits, demons and death; all the episodes mentioned in this post stick to relatively confined notions of the spiritualistic and pagan religions. However, this episode takes us further than I ever expected.
Paranormal Witness is a show - a bit like Celebrity Ghost Stories - where paranormal stories get retold and acted out.
And this episode follows a young man, Don, who becomes possessed by his abusive grandfather. Having displayed the typical signs of possession, he then began to have strange encounters with water.
Water began to seep from the walls, and then from the ceiling. But this wasn’t water - when someone touched it, it felt sticky.
It was only when Don was stuck in a trance, that water began to go upwards, towards the ceiling, and pots and pan began to rattle.
When religious rituals were used to cleanse Don, the water was directed towards the bible and person performing the cleansing.
This was only the start of Don’s new powers. And they were to intensify during his final stint in prison.

#11 - The Haunted Highway - Paranormal Witness (S1, E2)
Like I said: Paranormal Witness doesn’t stick to the typical hauntings we see. And this episode involves a UFO.
This story - without spoiling the episode - revolves around a mother and son who go missing in the desert. With a relative’s strange dreams pointing her to where they might be and a medical mystery twisting the tale, all that is left is one question:
What really happened in the desert?
You can watch this episode on Amazon for £1.89.
#12 - Celebrity Ghost Stories (S1, E9)
This episode featuring Morgan Fairchild, Lili Taylor, John Salley and Vincent Curatol is considered one of the scariest episodes of this popular episodes from which paranormal experience are acted out.
Here’s the synopsis to tickle your tastebuds of terror:
“A young Morgan Fairchild is abused by a spirit when she moves into her new husband's family home; an unidentifiable stranger comes to John Salley's aid during a nightclub shooting; Lili Taylor hears unexplained noises when she goes on retreat.”
You can watch this episode on Amazon for £1.89.
#13 - Pendle Hill - Most Haunted (S6, Halloween Special)
Pendle Hill might feature as a hiking opportunity in the Pennines, but it actually has a history - and a haunting - to boot.
Back in the early 17th century, a family of peasants were believed to possess a variety of paranormal powers. And the effigies they made of human hair and teeth didn’t make them appear any less suspicious, either!
The Pendle Witches, as they were known, were arrested, tried and then hung on Pendle Hill.
The witches never left the hill, however.
Not only did the neighbours of the Pendle Witches experience and die from mysterious illnesses, to this day supernatural activity has stuck close to this location.
Teeth have dropped onto tables during seances, and unnaturally frequent rainfall on the hill is a common occurrence.
So, what did the Most Haunted team see when they visited the site?
Acorah was apparently possessed by a witch, and a table and a glass smashed during the seance. Oh, and the whole cast and crew felt as if they were being strangled at certain points during filming.
Were they experiencing the final moments of the Pendle Witches as they were executed for their crimes?
You can check that episode out here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wu7yRqoLxLc
Or, you can have a speedy spook, instead!
30.00 - the equipment batteries drain, a classic indicator of paranormal presences.
32.00 - Acorah begins his readings of the area, and clearly becomes quite emotional and intense when describing the spirits he sees and hears.
45.00 - Acorah exhibits strange behaviour, and is on the receiving end of harmful spirits.
59.40 - Acorah sees a spirit - or perhaps an otherworldly being.
01.48.00 - the team perform the seance.
Now it’s time to hear what you think.
Which episode are you watching tonight?
And did I miss any seriously-spooktastic episodes out?

Coming Home
If there is one constant emotional response that my mind and body has conjured since coming back to Indonesia, it is anger. The reasons are plentiful. Chronic social and economic injustice, growing government oppression, sheer incompetency of many government officials, religious conservatism, as the proverbial saying goes, the list goes on.
And now with the coronavirus devastatingly consuming Indonesia and my government’s response has not only been weak and slow, lacking in coordination, but also simply at many times blatantly incompetent, anti-science and anti-expertise, resulting in the deaths of many including doctors and nurses, and with no full lockdowns initiated, no mass testing, just some half-baked government encouragement to physical distancing and good hygiene. I’ve observed that this time not only am I consumed with fervent anger but at many times deep sadness and crippling fear. An unholy trinity. In the name of anger, sadness and lingering fear.
Here’s some trivia and personal info for you folks. Did you know that Tuberculosis (TB) usually leaves scars on lungs it once infected and even though it’s been decades since my bout with TB, my lungs today, as you might expect, are not in tip-top shape. So that’s my pre-existing condition that at times, at many times, throws me into a panic and into a sudden cleaning spree. Wipe here, wipe there, disinfect door knobs, drowning recently handled money in warm soapy water. Irrational fear? On the contrary my beautiful friends. Indonesia has one of the highest Covid death rates in the world and with Covid patients on the rise but not at its peak, our already sparse healthcare system is already showing its cracks. Again, just to remind you, Indonesia is not even near the peak and we’re not even doing massive tests but everything is already hanging on a thread. Adding to this misery, the lack of some kind of social safety net has this climate of dread creeping up on me, this I acknowledge and I am trying as much as I can in keeping this at bay. Dread induced paralysis is not something I can to endure at the moment.
That’s some personal (slightly existential) rant right there.
But I understand that I’m lucky and painfully privileged to be able to work from home unlike so many others. So since at this moment my productivity rate is reaching zero and I’m basically pushing away work and other responsibilities as much as I can (which will probably come back and haunt me soon), let me just first reflect on life at the moment, updates on other things aside from this feeling of impending doom.
I’ve realized that I do not update this blog of mine as often as I would like to. Desires are kept as desires, and slowly wither away as desires. Yet as 2020 dawned on me and ages with uncertainty I spent my time re-reading old books that I have read many years ago and some of my old blog posts as well. Beginning with my first blog post which is now the ripe old age of 10 years old. One decade old. With the breakneck speed of change of today’s internet, 10 years is perhaps close to immortality in internet years. That being said, I still use Hotmail for my main email which I’ve had since 1998, the year I was introduced to the internet...and politics.
It was 13th of May 1998. I was at home with my dad as schools and offices were closed. The day before that soldiers opened fire at a student demonstration in front the University of Trisakti, Jakarta. Four students were killed, riots and demonstrations were happening everywhere the following day. So most people decided to stay home.
I remember my dad narrating the 1998 May protests as we attentively watched the event unravel through our old school CRT TV. My dad was thankfully percipient enough to refuse to go to his office during that week, but he did have friends in high places so it wasn’t much of a surprise if he received some kind of insiders info. I was about 12 years young at that time, on the cusp of teen hood. Puberty was on my mind, but that moment of watching a historical event unfold (which of course I did not understand it as something momentous) with my dad explaining with excitement of what was going on, even though I sure as hell did not understand the most of it, was illuminating. A father and son bonding session as result of reformasi. That sounded like a thesis topic: Family Relations and Social Change: Exploring Familial Relations through the 1998 Reformasi. (Hah!)
It did however shape my values and ideas that I still hold on to this day not only on politics per se but what I wanted or expected from this thing called the nation-state. I have to say that the May 1998 riots and demonstrations, the visualization of the riots on TV and my dad narrating in the background constantly interrupting the reporter, was the reason why I remember that day so clear. It made an indelible mark on me. I can’t even begin to imagine the impact to those who were physically effected by the riots, houses and stores burned down, people being raped and/or murdered..
About a week after the riots, on the 21st of May 1998 President Soeharto resigned after 32 years in power. I saw my dad cheering, again not fully grasping the reasons why, although he did try his best to explain. But it piqued my interest in politics, and being told that this this new thing (really new for me at that time) called the internet had much to offer about what was happening then, a few weeks after that, using my mom’s 36.6 kbps dial-up modem that I was awfully proud of, I registered for a shiny new Hotmail account. In hopes of joining mailing lists.
Wasantara-net, owned by Indonesia’s postal service, was my family’s choice for the internet service provider. I hated them as they were first-class in unreliability, but they were the only providers to be able to connect my house, on the edge of bogor, to the world wide web. My first few emails, if again I remember correctly, were chain mails about the May riots that I subscribed through questionable mIRC chats. Chats that start with A/S/L, age, sex, location, and either ends in hook ups, or being involved in something you’re too young or ignorant to fully understand.
Being young(er) and wanting to be part of something important is such a motivating factor in us actually doing and becoming something. With Carl Gustav Jung in mind, being young or old, we are but “modern man in search of meaning” and being part of something greater than ourselves does still give me meaning.
Fast forward a few decades, I’ve noticed that you get a raised eyebrow when you tell people that you’ve been using the same email for more than 20 years now, and you get double raised eyebrows and an instance of wincing, once they find out that said email is a Hotmail account. I am coming up with less and less excuses of why I haven’t migrated fully to other emails. But hey, you know what they say, habit brings comfort, repetition brings comfort, knowledge that arises from experience, from personal history, brings comfort. Although not always, the past brings comfort, while the future which is riddled with unpredictability is lamented and brings worry if not angst. Comfort though, I have come to understand, brings laziness and at many times dullness.
It is however always interesting looking at one’s own past and how it is intertwined with the past of others. I think I’ve written about this a number of times, and most of my writings are born from the act of retrospect. I often assume that I would not be able to talk about my future if I never look at my past, but what also happens is that I also end up talking more about my past or at the very most my present rather than talking/thinking about my future. Is that bad? Is that good? Am I shying away from discussions about my particular future? Maybe, I don’t have an answer to that now. But I know it’s there, tucked away in the back of my mind so I’ll probably talk more about that someday. And with Covid-19 destroying all of my plans in the near future that someday will probably come sooner.
Coming home to Indonesia, after a number of years abroad, I have also come to realize, sadly, that many of my social activities here in this space which I reluctantly call home, are more often than not, performative acts that I do not like performing for. I am basically faking it and I am doing this by fulfilling a cultural and social role that I necessarily do not have strong feelings for, or even just feelings for, but I have adapted myself into it. Somewhat. The reason why I do this is simply out of respect of others. Things that do not give meaning for me, has often been deeply meaningful for others and expressing it verbally does not bode well for maintaining relationships. I am happy to say that I have Rara to remind me when I have become too logical (I am happy to say that I have Rara to remind about many things in life) in understanding the meaning of culture for many. But it is, simply put, not without its personal struggles.
Being a son, being a son-in-law, being a younger and the youngest child in a family oriented, confuscianist-style, hierarchical, the-individual-is-constantly-attached-to-the-social kind of society. And then being a husband in a patriarchal society, where I am expected to fill a kind of leadership role that tires, bores and disinterests me.
(On a side note: for some reason, I have often come across this odd discussion of alpha/beta male/female amongst my peers here. Which I find interesting as it denotes a fixation to hierarchy and also the assumption of fixed temperaments/personalities of an individual across space and time. Are they basically saying that agency of one’s self perceived to be rarely possible? Is change and adapting to a situation impossible? )
Then without doubt as a citizen of a nation that I superficially identify with. How can I ever identify with a nation that happily and openly oppresses others for the sake of unity? And not only rarely admits it but even more rare tries to amend it. It is a simple rhetorical question.
In sum, I have to be honest with myself here, coming back home to Indonesia is not home for me and I don’t think it will ever be one. It is more of a burden than something that brings joy.
The food is great here and I have my family here which is also nice but life of course is much, much more than just culinary preferences or familial ties. I am losing my sense of self here, and it is destructive for me. I am losing myself.
Fully realizing this I was looking for a sense of direction when I reread some of my old already read books that once inspired and also my old blog posts these past few weeks. At the crux of it, this blog has always been for me. It is shared publicly in hopes of others sharing what they have learned through life and what I have done wrong in my life. And I have done many wrongs that have not been righted, some no longer even have the possibility of being righted.
Rereading my blog, I realize much like others, that our attempts in finding meaning, and our meanings when they are found are frail and delicate. It is constantly assailed and it is easily lost, and at times harder to find when lost. Life it seems always tries its best to rob you of meaning. Not because it is intent in doing so, but because the very nature of life is in its impermanence. Everything is impermanent including meaning itself.
Intellectually and experientially I understand this. But again like many, I’ve still tried to find meaning in others, and much like many I’ve lost these people in which I have found meaning in. This is the constant dillema as naturally social creatures.
It is perhaps in our nature to be contradictory, or to live in denial, to assume that meaning and the people or objects that give meaning is eternal.
Some of these people that I have acquired meaning from I have forever lost through death, much like so many people out there. I have also lost some rather unintentionally, such as due to spoken words that are not carefully thought out. Some by design, on purpose, with deep intent and thoroughly planned with precision execution, slowly letting go. At other times, a harsh break, a rude awakening on both ends, yet ending in a sigh of relief. As some relationships, although lush with wonderful memories, are never meant to last and can never be let to live in the future. Memories that remain as memories, stories of the past, that do not become worries of the present nor burdens of the future. Our understanding of meaning is often forced to change and to morph and at many times, to end. People and things that once provided meaning no longer do, as people and the things around us change. People including me.
I’ve changed, I know I’ve changed, I’m quieter yet more angry of the world, hopefully a bit more thoughtful of my words and actions. But one thing that hasn’t changed is how I am not done with grief, and I don’t know if I’ll ever be done with it. I’m not even sure if it’s actually grief. Because we all know that the tragedy of growing old, is the tragedy of unwillingly filling your life with regrets and maybe my grief is but a thin veil for my regrets.
One of my plants in my garden died today. A lush rosella bush that I was hoping to make some tea out of its beautiful red flowers. The days are drawing long, and hope is few and far in between.
Be well everyone.

Love Locked Up P1
TV SHOW: ACCUSED COUPLE: JAKE X READER RATING: SWEET AF
Spoiler/notes : this is bases after the events of the show Spoilers if you haven't seen it but also why not because the full epp is available on youtube but in the show, Jake (TBS) does get 12 years it is in another episode that he is set free and told to run before he can enter the prison, But this is bases as if that didn't happen and he did, in fact, go to prison.
I laid on my bunk staring up at the bed above me thinking about everything and nothing. The cluttering noises of people moving about in the other cells, the sound of the birds coming back and forth to care for the baby birds in the nest lodged up in the guttering, The sink tap slightly dripping onto the basin.
I heard a creak as Mike climbed off his bunk and leaned on the sink running some water going to start to shave
"You'd 'ave gone mad by the time you get outta 'ere" he laughs
"What?" I asked him as he woke me out if whatever I was thinking
"You sit on your own all bloody day, the only thing anybody Sees you doing is reading your goddamn books, your gonna go nuts" he laughs
"Well… what do you suggest?" I asked him "I've got another ten years in here"
"Get in good with some people… they'll treat you nice when you get out" he smirked
"No thanks, a gang got me into his mess I'm staying away from all that" I explain
"Ain't you got any visitors to look forward to?' he asks
"No, my mum and gran are the only family I've got and they went in for there sentence a couple of months ago" I explain
"Why don't you do an education program your what nineteen? Get a fucking law degree or something you've got ten years to do it" he explained
"I've asked them to put me on the waiting list for the programs but… I don't think I'll see any of it" I sighed
"Why don't you join the writing program?" He suggested
"The what?"
"The writing program, get got lists and lists of people Willing to chat they write you some letters write some back it's something to do Murray, better than sitting here thinking for the next ten years" he explained "who knows maybe you'll meet someone nice" he explained
"Like who?" I asked
"Well it's how I met monica" he says grabbing something from the wall where his mattress was handing it to me it was a photo of a fairly nice looking girl in a little pink dress
"She seems nice" I shrug giving it back to him
"Met her though the program, she sends me letters, photos, hell she comes to visit me sometimes"
"She does?"
"Not always sometimes she's busy, she even visits for special ones if you know what I mean" he winked
"Oohh.. that's nice" I laughed
"What you got to loose" he laughs
"I guess" I shrug.
I sat at the table while everyone was having leisure time a few guys fighting about something, I was almost sure some odd things going down but I didn't much care I just focused on my book till I spotted a guard coming around out the corner of my eye with a handful of letters, I made a mental note of it and carried on reading as he read out names giving people letters
"Murray Jake, ohh popular this week" he says dropping two letters in front of me I was a little confused but nodded to him and took them shutting my book one was from my mum and gran telling me how things where for them so I did a quick one back explaining how things were for me too. As soon as I was done I grabbed the other one it looked strange a handwriting I didn't recognize but it had my name, my inmate number even the prison address in perfect blue letters so I opened it
"Dear Jake Murray, I hope this letter finds you well. I don't know why I wrote it that way I guess it just sounded epic and cool way to start I suppose I mean your not allowed to leave and I'll just throw this in the post box down my road I mean neither of us have any control over weather or not this letter with arrive to you let alone the state it will be in. That'll be up to royal mail I guess.
Ohh I'm sorry I'm bad at introductions."
It made me laugh for the first time in a good while
"Anyway, my name's y/n and I live not far from the prison, in fact just the next town over and I'll admit I'm not the best socially Incase you couldn't already tell. I've struggled making friends my whole life and now I'm out of education and working I find it harder and harder, people don't like to talk with me they always tend to run away from me. But I thought maybe there's someone in there as lonely as me so I wrote in asking to be part of the program and they sent me you, please don't feel you have to respond if you don't want to. I was just curious, but still I hope to perhaps hear from you soon."
Then her name and address,
I rather liked her letter. I don't know why but I felt like she was sweet and kind, like I could tell her anything.
"Dear Y/n, it's alright I rather liked the epic introduction it was sweet I know how you feel it's not exactly easy with the people in here either but I did sign up to the program for the off chance if just honestly getting to talk with someone else, and I'd love getting to talk with you that is if you wanted to talk with me, I'd like to hear from you again soon"
I sat on my bed trying to read my book when I saw one of the guards come around with some letters "hey Murray you got another one" he says handing me a letter through the bars
"Ohh thanks" I smiled happily taking it sitting on my bed and opening the letter it was from y/n we had been sending letters back and forth every week for about six months now and I adored every moment of it
"Dear Jake, I hope your doing okay in there I get worried about you sometimes, I don't know why just sometimes when I'm alone or at work I think about you in there and I worry a little bit about you, works been alright the comic book store hasn't been busy very much lately, how are things for you? Ohh I sent you a present it should be in the envelope"
I looked in the envelope and saw a little square of clear resin with a rose inside
"It sounds stupid I know but I made it for you, it reminded me of you in some ways something so beautiful trapped but still able to he admired"
"Awww y/n" I smiled
"I also included another little present for you I know you said in your last letter you were curious what I looked like so I sent you a picture, I hope you write back soon Jake X"
I got the little polaroid out the envelope. She was sitting on a wall by a river in a beautiful blue sundress, she was the most beautiful girl I'd ever seen.
I instantly grabbed some paper and instantly started writing back.
"Dear Y/n, your presents are beautiful there, amazing. I can't believe the flower. I can't believe you made that for me it's so sweet of you. I worry about you in that little comic shop all the time I sometimes get worried about you all alone as well. Im always overjoyed to get your letters they're the sweet rainbow in the stormy rain of life in here, your photo is amazing, your even more beautiful then I imagined you to be you look so beautiful and amazing, y/n I know we haven't been talking to long but I was wondering if maybe one of these days you could come up for visiting, I'd really like to meet you in person if you wanted to of course, I hope you respond soon"
I sat on my bed while everyone had already headed off to the showers and such as it was visiting today but I didn't have anyone coming so I didn't bother I just stayed in my cell reading my books until I heard a guard coming around
"Oi, murray what are you still doing here?" He asked
"It's visiting, figured I'd stay here" I shrug
"Why? Figured you'd be washing like a madman getting ready" he laughs leaning on the cell
"Why?" I asked
"You have a visitor, she's down in the waiting room with the rest of them" he laughs
"A visitor?" I asked a little confused it couldn't be my mum or my gran then it hit me and I grabbed the poleriod y/n sent me in her last letter that I had since blue tacked to the wall next to my bed "does she look like this?" I asked handing him it he looked at the picture before handing it to me
"Yeah looks like her" he says I instantly put my picture back grabbed my stuff and ran off to the showers excitedly, I can't believe I'm going to meet her, and that she didn't tell me first, maybe she did and the letter just hasn't got here yet. I scrubbed more then I think I had ever scrubbed in my life getting dressed into the best clothes I had even if they weren't that great. Heading down with the other guys
"What are you down here for? Thought you weren't getting visitors anymore" Mike says as he fixed his shirt
"Yeah uhh y/n is here to see me" I blushed
"Who's y/n?" He asks
"The girl I've been writing? Who I have been talking to for like six months? And sends me letter's atleast once a week? And that I haven't stopped talking about?"
"Oohh… got yourself a little girlfriend Murray?" He laughs
"What no!" I argued even if I blushed "she's my friend"
"Yeah, your friend who's picture you lay next to" he smirked
"Shut up" I sighed as I didn't have an excuse they let us in and sat each of us at a numbered little table, I saw sat by the barred window looking out across the yard, suddenly I felt a werid rumble in my stomach, my head didn't feel right
"You alright?" Mike asks as he was in the table to the side of me across the walkway
"Yeah just uhhh I suddenly don't feel too well" I admit moving my hands off the table noticing how much I had sweat as there where not handprints in the table which I quickly used my sleave to clean and he laughs at me
"It's called butterflies murray just relax" he laughs as I saw the doors open, I kept my head down not wanting to look to… overexcited I guess. As people filed in sitting at the numbered tables they had been given often greeting them with hugs and kisses, I fiddled with my fingers on my lap looking out the window as I heard little steps.
"Jake?" A voice asked I looked and it was y/n but she was even more beautiful then her photo, in little blue heels and black tights a blue and white spotted dress and a white cardigan over her shoulders, her hair in loose curls that made her look so sweet she had a rather large black bag and red lipstick she looked...like an angel, the most beautiful girl I'd seen in my life
"Y/n" I smiled but as I did my voice cracked making me put my hand over my mouth in shock what the hell! My voice hasn't cracked since I was fifteen it made her giggle I got up a little nevously and she smiled up at me as I was a little taller the her "uuuuhh hi" I smiled
"Hi" she replied

Civilization VI: Gathering Storm Cheats
Enable Console
Start by head to the following file location:
C:Users[USER NAME]DocumentsMy GamesSid Meier’s Civilization VI
Now, make a backup of the AppOptions.txt file. Open that file and scroll down to the [Debug] section of the file. Look for a line containing the following text:
EnableDebugMenu 0
Change the 0 in that text so that it reads 1, and start playing the game like usual. Then press ~ (TILDE, THE KEY ABOVE TAB) to access the debug console.
Easy Deity Win (Exploit)
You can win the game on Deity difficulty and score some easy achievements by taking the following steps:
Choose your civilization.
Create a custom game with only “Score Victory” checked, and change the turn limit to 1.
Load the game and choose the Found City option.
End your turn as soon as the option becomes available.
You win the match, just like that, and you will unlock numerous achievements. This works on any difficulty setting.
Reveal the Entire Map
Use a text editor to edit the “Config.ini” file in your Steam Apps folder or the “DocumentsMy GamesSid Meier’s Civilization 6” directory.
Civ 6 Gold Cheat Engine 6.4
Find the “DebugPanel = 0” line and change it to “DebugPanel = 1”
Save and close the “Config.ini” file.
While playing the game, press ~ to display the debug panel.
Select “Reveal All” to reveal the entire map.
There are also other debug options you can enable.
Now you can easily access Debug Console in Civilization VI in-game. In order to activate it you just need to PRESS TILDE “~”. It will open a Debug Window, from there select “Reveal All” option.
Trading Glitch
When trading with the AI, you can use two major glitchs:
1- Give any strategic or luxury resources and as much gold per turn as possible, then click the option whatwill you give me for this?, the AI will break and will offer insane amounts of goldand gold per turn just for the resource.
Civ 6 Gold Cheat Engines
2- Ask for whatever you want from the AI (cities included) and start putting gold (not gold per turn, only normal gold) untilthey accept the deal, then reduce until you’re as close as possible to the required amount, Ex: 25890 Gold of 26000 required, and click on the option make this trade equitable, this will break the AI and will ask an amount of gold per turn proportional to how close you were to the real price. (I bought 5 cities for 3 gold per turn and a jeans in emperor difficulty). This glitch can also be used in multiplayer matches that include AI, but will surely get patched soon.
Early Domination
If you want to enjoy Civilization 6’s battle systems, it’ll be best to pick up the Aztecs, Scythia, or the Spartan Greece. Aztecs allow your own territories to have more tile improvements as their Eagle Warriors convert slain units into Builder units. Meanwhile, Scythia’s units have bonuses against targeting wounded enemy units. Lastly, the Spartan Greece units generate Culture per enemy unit killed. Waging war in the earlier eras yields fewer Warmonger penalties, so feel free tosiege other Civilizations or City States if you need something from them. If you manage to take every Capital or wipe out every leader in the match, your Civilization will attain the laborious and difficult Domination Victory.

Camera keys
With Civilization VI now out in the wild, one of the biggest gripes is the camera control not being mapped to WASD. The good news is that camera keys can be changedwith some simple file editing. To change the camera control keys do the following: ..SteamsteamappscommonSid Meier’s Civilization ViBaseAssetsUI
Open the “WorldInput.lua” file in a text editor such as Notepad or Notepad++ Find the DefaultKeyDownHandler section Find the line if( uiKey Keys.VK_UP ) and then make the changes as follows if( uiKey Keys.VK_UP or uiKey Keys.W) if( uiKey Keys.VK_RIGHT or uiKey Keys.A) if( uiKey Keys.VK_DOWN or uiKey Keys.S) if( uiKey Keys.VK_LEFT or uiKey Keys.D)
Next you need to add the same entries above to the DefaultKeyUpHandler section. Note that you will also need to rebind the default Attack and Great Works default keys to something else so your new camera keys do not conflict.
Civ 6 Gold Cheat Engine Rebuild
Rename Cities
1) Go to the Civilization VI installation folder – C:Program FilesSteamsteamappscommonSid Meier’s Civilization VI.
2) Go to Base > Assets > Text > install language – ..SteamsteamappscommonSid Meier’s Civilization VIBaseAssetsTexten_US.
3) Then open the file named “CityNames_Text.xml” with any text editor, then search for the city/civilization that you want to rename. Change the name there and save. Once you are all done reload the game and you will find your city name changed.
Disable Unit Auto Cycle
Go to ..UsersDocumentsMy GamesSid Meier’s Civilization VI
Then open “UserOptions.txt”
After that go to “line 60” then change “AutoUnitCycle 1” to “AutoUnitCycle 0”
Save the file “UserOptions.txt”
Once you are all done then save (Ctrl + S)
Civ 5 Cheat Engine Gold
Now you are all set to enjoy the Civilization VI game without Unit Auto Cycle.

Being a nurse during the COVID-19 Era.
I was a nursing student during the Ebola crisis where they taught us how to suit up and doff properly without being contaminated. It so happens that the hospital I was interning in at the time was planned to be the hospital in NY State that would take on the first Ebola case if it were ever to hit our state. They made it clear that if the case were to come to the hospital, the student nurses were to not even be on the same unit, and that they would move us. However, in cases of lack of assistance, they would need us to know how to properly enter and exit the room with the hazmat suit without providing contamination to ourselves and the environment.
I have also been a nurse the past almost four years during crazy and erratic flu hits. I have seen flu kill the terminally ill and the elderly. I have also seen the flu hit my coworkers pretty bad as a result of working in health care. Working overnights in a section of the emergency room, we always have flu patients and we are always prepared to a certain extent, how it would affect our patient once getting report.
But not with COVID.
As of two Saturdays ago, I am currently a part of one of the designated groups of nurses for COVID-19 for my hospital. I am on the float pool and they started by emptying out one of our main units to reserve them for COVID-19 rule-outs and positive patients. (Obviously the expansion of designated COVID units grew over a week...) There are cameras watching us every time we enter and exit a room and put on and off our PPE gown. With that, staff must sign (pretty much their life away) each time they enter or exit the room, by providing contact info, DOB, who watched us and their info, etc. This includes staff that also enter to pick up the garbage. Everyone in the hospital had to learn the steps of putting on and taking off the protective equipment. Not just nurses and doctors. At this point, it felt all hospitals were ready to respond to this clientele and the caseload.
At first I was so thrilled to be one of the COVID nurses and to be assigned on one of the COVID units. And then, came the first time another nurse and I actually had to gown up. Each time we gown up in the protective equipment, we must have another nurse on the other side of the glass watch us and check off a checklist of things we are doing. The purpose of this is to also catch any contamination to ourselves or the environment quickly. The first situation of us gowning up, I was actually the observer. Gowning up takes some time so after a few minutes of checking off the checkboxes, watching her, and giving her a thumbs up after every step, then comes the part of the eyewear which then caused me to look up at this nurse’s eyes. She had tears filling up her eyes , something I didn't notice while checking her method of donning her equipment, and her hands were shaking as she was placing the eyewear onto her face. She has a young child at home and she used to tell me about how she is also a caretaker for her parents. I wonder if this is what she was thinking of before entering the room. I heard rustling behind me and I turned around. Two evening administrators were there intensely watching from the distance almost unsure about walking near the door where we must stand to observe.
Later that evening when it was around the 3rd time I had to gown up to go to my own patient’s room, I went in the with PCA so he can assist me with closing the back of my gown as well as him getting comfortable coming in and out of the room per protocol. I looked up halfway through our gowning process, to see staff and admin watching us as well. Everyone had a look of fear in their eyes. I turned to look at the PCA who would not make eye contact and always had a strong demeanor when it came to things like codes, rapids, etc. He looked startled and like he didn’t want to talk about anything. At that moment I realized, we actually don’t know anything about what is behind those isolation doors once we enter. All we know is that it is airborne, we have only SOME information about the viral processes and the human body reaction, and that the human race can only receive oxygen in only three different ways before complete intubation... (Breathing on their own, nasal cannula, and Non-rebreather. The other options would cause viral shedding, leading to worsening of the viral spread and even contamination.) We also knew that each time we gowned up and enter the room, we were able to see facts and theories in front of us and assist us in understanding the virus more and how to manage based on other EBP methods from past, and new methods. Which made the situation SO interesting.
On my second shift being one of the COVID nurses, we learned more about the virus. And one thing was confirmed about my previous shift, and it was that the beliefs even among staff/the hospital and community members about what it all is, varied...
We started learning that after a couple of days of confirmed testing, people were coding. There seemed to be a peak time that the virus was causing severe respiratory failure and a systemic failure response and our managers told us that this was an ongoing and similar experience with other hospitals that they have collaborated with when discussing support during emergency responses. Days later, a nationally recognized public health organization actually published a report online that showed the timeline graph of peak levels during viral process and that proved the theory to possibly be correct. After a certain amount of days, almost regardless of intervention, certain people were rapidly deteriorating.
I walked into shift that day briefly assisting my colleagues in a code. Although this person had several cofounding factors that would've made even the basic flu difficult for the person to overcome, it was scary to see. Next thing you know a staff member’s gown had ripped in the process of helping the patient. Some staff were actually nervous for her. She followed proper decontamination protocol but it was still the fear of the unknown that is controlling everyone that is causing complete mayhem and chaos.
It is also the lack of supplies causing unreal scenarios....I took complete pride in the fact that my team would be some of the first COVID nurses , until I realized we didn't even have enough n95 respirators...that we were reusing products...(Which almost puts us at risk for contamination of ourselves and our environment and loved ones) we also don’t have enough face shields or goggles. So we are reusing them every shift. We can blame politicians or our actual health care orgs or whomever you feel is responsible when it came to emergency prepardness and allocation of funds. But all I know is that I am, as well as other staff, are becoming more and more at risk every shift as well as at risk when community members can't follow basic instructions and educate themselves with resources that are actually not factual. Which brings me to my next thanggg - When I see families out in the super market using gloves and masks, I get angry.
1. The masks you see people wearing are not n95 respirators so you will catch corona and even TB regardless. Jokes on you, folks.
2. Gloves? Are you serious? You think that will protect you? Each time you pick up an item wearing gloves and touch your face/fix your hair (which is what I actually saw the other day) you’re not protecting yourself. That glove is now contaminated regardless, and unless you’re bleaching the shit out of the products you are buying before placing them in your vehicle or bag, they are holding onto whatever the environment has, as well. Contaminated or not.
3. I understand the fear of the city/stores closing down so you must stock up on essentials and food. However, you are now defeating the purpose of preventing viral spread and you’re causing large groups in one tight area to take place. (Shoutout and much love to grocery store / restaurant employees, etc.) It’s to the point where I am less of a threat if I walk into a patient’s room with symptoms of COVID and then run over and cough on and hug 100 people, than those who have been at Walmart or the grocery store everyday this week spending a long amount of time getting items. I understand the need to have essentials, and that online services may be more expensive, but at times like these, they may be worth it especially if you or someone you are at home with is compromised in some way. This also, by the way, helps with the job industry including forcing one to have more self-awareness with WIC covered products and can assist in monitoring that they are not taken off of shelves and into carts out of pure human PANIC as opposed to other replacement products.
4. This happening does not give you the excuse to blame a certain group of people. If you do not know what corona is (and by going to CVS the other day to pick up my acid reflux meds and hearing chatter about it at my second job by non-medical personnel , I realize this is the case) then you need to shut the fuck up and not be an inherently racist prick. The end. No excuses.
Do not panic. BUT. Stay home once all your essentials are brought together. I know that during these times, there may be job and financial hardships, loved ones you are concerned about, and some children’s/college students’ education is on the line and being effected as a result (as is mine...), and that there is fear due to the unknown contamination of the virus and due to the different directions in leadership and advices. But please try to stay calm. And stay home. Staying home is the only thing you have control of at this moment, that can eventually help restore everything going on. The more you stay home, the more you’re helping ease the situation/exposures which can eventually lead to the life we were living before where you can work, go to school, etc. And since you will all have time now, educate yourself on the spread of Corona and understand WHAT it even is. One of the leading issues seems to be that no one was properly educated on it, causing the reaction everyone is having which is putting more people in danger and hospitals in complete stress and OVER the capacity to diligently care for patients that have the virus, among with other serious illnesses.
Flatten the mother fucking curve.
Love,
Emily RN

Dust settled in your bones as you unpacked boxes in the living area of your new house, the layout open, making the home look far bigger than it actually was. Eyes traveling over the furnishings, you found yourself with a bittersweet taste in your mouth. You remembered that moving out on your own represented independence and new opportunities, it also shed light on the things that life had ripped from you—the very things that pushed you to move in the first place. In the dust and peeking sun rays that dotted the tops of marked boxes your memories were written; forcing you to take a moment’s pause.
He had run into the arms of someone else as if he had loved them all his life, crushing your heart beneath his heel. You could have strangled him to death for what he had done to you, but despite the pain he caused you and the knife he put in your back, you still kept his clothes and smelled them while you sobbed as if you were in grief of a wondrous love lost. He was poison, but damn did the apple taste so sweet. He had another heart to mangle, and you were left with no one. You felt utterly alone, and regardless of your best friend telling you that you were a ‘catch’ and that they would help you ‘get back out there’, you still felt the pangs of hopelessness tug on your broken heart.
Sighing, you dropped down into your floor and leaned against the couch, your legs crisscrossing comfortably. The wind pushed from you, and particles burst from the vintage cushions, the sofa groaning as if it were commiserating with you. You couldn’t allow yourself to wallow. What good did it do? None. What would it heal? Nothing. Perhaps you should take your friend’s advice and get back out there—but where would you go?
A club had been suggested, only about a half hour train ride from where you lived, but the notion made you laugh. It wasn’t that you were against clubs, it’s just that you weren’t exactly up to the task of being thrust into such a physical environment. Truth be told, you weren’t exactly the club-goer, and when you thought of awkwardly gyrating on the dance floor, you wanted to facepalm. If you were already embarrassed of yourself, how did you expect to manage actually doing it?
Your phone chiming broke your concentration, and you quickly picked it up, secretly hoping it was a Snap from your bestie, goading you into attending tonight—but what you got was a social media notification…for him. You had forgotten that you had tapped that bell, that every time he posted, you were going to see it—and there they were, arm in arm, lips close and eyes lovingly focused on one another. You could have crushed your phone, a tear rolling down your cheek. Anger became you, and you quickly unfollowed him, closing your phone before dropping it onto the couch behind you. Forcing air from your nose, you cracked—
“You know what? Fuck it. Let’s go.”
***************
The night was cold, and with you scantily dressed, the warm color of the pink neon was doing nothing to stop the chill of your exposed skin. You walked down the sidewalk towards the blacked-out doors of club ₩onder, your best friend by your side, stumbling a bit as they fixed their makeup in a compact; and you found yourself curious of where they were going to stash it, sure it would leave an odd shape in those spandex hot-pants. Honestly, the thought of it gave you a much-needed laugh.
Prodding you because you were laughing, they knocked against your arm and smiled wide, locking fingers with you to pull you along, quickly moving into the line. Glancing to the other patrons, you felt immediately out of place. Black leather, lace, and chokers galore, you swore you had stumbled onto the Gothic underground. Honestly, you weren’t dressed badly, but you felt like you should have been warned so that you could have worn black and blended in—no one likes to stick out because they’re one blue smudge in a sea of ash.
“You should have told me it was a bondage club, I would have dressed the part.” You whispered to your companion, leaning close to them, your ass perked and back arched, catching the attention of the bouncer, who did his part to move the line along.
“₩onder is not a bondage club, it’s…artistic.” Your friend said, waving a hand.
“There’s literally someone in a leather puppy mask, and another with a horse tail butt plug.” You gestured towards a few people not far up in the line from where you stood. Honestly, the horse tail had you mesmerized, but you found yourself wondering if they straightened, or brushed it. It looked so soft as it moved, perfectly contrasting the rubber tail of the puppy a few spots further up the line. Said puppy was on all fours, moving their hips back and forth obediently, making their tail wag, as their master gripped a leather leash and gently pet their snout, making cute little sounds pour from their lips. A part of you found it oddly cute, and you might have smiled, but you couldn’t shake the scene.
“Come on. Keep an open mind!” Your bestie said, swatting at your arm playfully, before winking, “—or would you rather go home to your vibrator?”
“Hey, don’t bring Kai into this!” You could have put them in a headlock, but someone here might have taken it the wrong way. They just deserved a punch for saying something like that out loud. So embarrassing–you might have been blushing, but your layers of makeup saw to it that it didn’t see the light of day.
“I can’t believe you named it that.” They rolled their eyes so dramatically that you swore you heart them turn in their head, “You’re so sad.”
You wrinkled your brows and shook your head, gesturing to the line and towards the club, though the volume of your voice didn’t raise. You didn’t want to call attention to yourself, “You are the one that is looking for love in a place like this—”
“Oh, I’m not looking for love. Unless it’s thick, and deep…Mmf.” They said, running a hand down their front, giving a half-hearted, trashy body roll. You laughed behind your hand, but they didn’t stop there, moving their ass like a bitch scorned, “You should stop thinking about ‘marriage’ and ‘eternity’, and all that shit. Focus on the here and now.” Their fingers pointed to the ground before they made an obscene gesture, tongue in their cheek, “You need to get laid.”
“Well, that’s your opinion—” Crossing your arms, you looked away, pretending to scan the place, mostly because you didn’t want to talk about it anymore. It wasn’t that you were sensitive about your lack of recent carnal vocation, but rather because you felt like the odd one out for not jumping on the first cock you saw.
“Mhm. The right one. Fill up your empty hole.” They twitched a finger back and forth, grinning from ear to ear.
“Why are we friends?” You huffed.
“Shut up, you love me.”
The bouncer moved a hand from side to side, gesturing for you both to move forward. He was a tall man, and quite dense in muscle. His shirt was rather tight, and he seemed perpetually flexed, waiting for someone to pick a fight with him. There was a real masculinity that radiated from him that made you feel both safe and terribly insecure at the same time. Checking your IDs, he waved you in, taking a moment to roll his eyes down the line of your spines—and it sent uncomfortable shivers across your bare shoulders as you pushed into the place.
Pulsing with rhythmic pop and dance music, ₩onder truly looked like an undulating mass of Gothic intrigue, the mass of people making it hard to tell where one ended and the other began. Trying to get into the swing of the place, you wound through people, keeping as close to your friend as you could, heading for the bar. Looking over the drink list, you wrinkled your brows—they were all named after blood types and the like.
Glancing to your companion, who had already ordered and was smelling their drink curiously, you assumed it was just witty word play, and ordered a “O+ Passion”, which was handed to you in a crystal glass, and was as deep red as the night was black. You sniffed at the rim of the glass, the copper bloom of the liquor filling your nose, making your eyes water. What the hell. Taking a drink, you immediately spit it back into the glass, trying to do so behind your hand so as not to offend anyone, especially the bartender.
You felt as if the liquid had stained your teeth, so you licked furiously at them, feeling as if a film had been permanently placed atop your canines. What an odd drink. Turning to the dance floor, you glanced up to make sure no one had seen you—and over the crowd, from the front of the room, eyes like pale-blue, lavender ice gripped you, cutting straight to your heart. Plush tiers of rose down, and porcelain skin held your gaze, making you shake where you stood—you were lucky you hadn’t dropped your drink in awe.
He must have been many meters from you, across the dance floor, but he felt like he was standing right in front of you. Seated in a baroque style throne atop a pedestal, white yet reflecting pink from the lights of the club, he exuded power and dominant sensuality. His legs were as long as you could see, and his arms matched, hands resting delicately, and fingers flexed. He was somehow the most dominantly severe and beautifully soft thing you had ever seen in your entire life. A fire lit within you, and suddenly, you needed to know him at the deepest parts of your soul—to have him fill you with all that he was, and use you as he liked; twist you into a gorgeous pretzel.
***************
On your knees in front of him, like King and peasant, your back arched, chest heaving as it begged for him, his energy having taken you over, as if his power was wrapping around your nerves and guiding them to act. You didn’t know how you got here—you didn’t remember walking to him, and you certainly couldn’t recall kneeling as if he were your king. You didn’t feel in control of your faculties, much less your own limbs, and when your lips peeled open, your primal desires dripped from your tongue.
“Tell me…why are you here, mortal?” The male didn’t speak, not one word, but his voice was so loud in your mind that it made your ears ring. His eyes never left you, their intent obvious in the shift of color within their spreading iris.
“I want you to take me…” You said aloud, and no one in the room seemed the wiser. Your friend, lost to the crowd, was bleeding from major pulse points, being fed on by multiple patrons who had ensnared them, their body shaking in orgasmic death, clawing for release on the dance floor, the sound of the music drowning out the sound of their voice.
“You want to be mine? Hm?” His hand lifted, grazing the long earring in his left ear before trailing down over the layered lace choker he wore, the top a glinting silver that read “Appelle-Moi”, the necklaces beneath it falling down his chest, accentuating perfect skin as it dipped into a low shirt. The veining of his skin was like a sensual road map, and each time your eye caught sight of a new shade of blue, it trembled. Soaked.
“Take me.” You whimpered, your lips remaining open as if held by strong fingers.
“Obedient slave, I like that.” He nodded, and smiled, but his lips formed no shape, “…Call me ‘Master Hyungwon’. Say it.” He commanded, his mental tone deeper and quite a bit more even than before. You shook as you remained still, his lips peeling apart slowly, showing long fangs, making you quake with pleasure at just the sight. How had this happened to you? Kneeling and wet, you begged for him.
“Master…Hyungwon…” You croaked.
“Mmnn…Good…” He lifted his chin and raised an arm, pointing off towards a velvet covered doorway to the left of where his throne sat, “Go. Through there. Crawl.”
“Yes, Master Hyungwon.”
***************
Hand fisted in what he could grip of your hair, bare hips forced against your tear-streaked face, your throat taking his cock as deep as it would as he face-fucked you, your nose hitting soft pubic hair with each strike of that thickened head to the depths of your slender esophagus. The glide made your throat bulge visibly, but he only pushed deeper, breathing heavily through his nose, thrusting himself harshly, the welcoming muscles enveloping him, making your eyes roll back in your head and your gag reflex act up.
Snarling, he kept himself controlled, but his hips jerked back and forth several times vigorously before he pulled from your throat, saliva stringing from your mouth to his girth, the thick of the veined member bobbing in the dense air of the room. Staring down at you, he brought your face forward once more, rubbing the mushroomed, red head against the shape of your lips, swirling the glistening precum against your mouth.
Your lids fluttered open at the feeling of that cock against your lips, a submissive expression taking you as you stared up at him, opening your mouth slowly, your tongue slipping forward to press to the thick underbelly of that girth, the tip flicking, silently begging for more. Hyungwon licked the expansive curvatures of his lips, bringing the hand that had once been in your hair forward, gently petting over your crown, “…Mm…so hungry…” He finally spoke aloud, though it was no more than a whisper, and as he watched you, his lean abdominal muscles flexed visibly, making you feel weak. Your hands ran down your thighs and you moved your head forward, that thick tip popping into your mouth, and he gave a moment’s pause just to watch you before gripping the back of your skull a second time, slamming his cock into your mouth once more, arching to keep it deep, “A-ahh…suck…harder.”
You found yourself unable to defy him, even with the painful stretch of your throat nearly taking over your ability to breathe. His hips moving again, he would roll them, starting a slow, hard rhythm, grunting deeply from how you stimulated him. Picking up the pace, he snarled, gripping your hair a second time, this time harder than prior, fucking your throat as if he was a man starved. Your nails dug into your thighs and you tried to keep yourself stable, tears rolling over your cheekbones, the stretch nearly too much.
“A-ah, I’m close. Yeah, just like that.” He groaned lewdly, his head tipping back and body tensing hard as he chased his orgasm, “Fuck…” Jerking his hips forward a handful more times until he slammed himself deep and stilled, shooting thick, immense, cum into that throat, against your nasal passage and second gag reflex, the white fluid forced from your nose, your throat spasming around his throbbing girth, which pulsed hard against your tongue.
You closed your eyes tightly until he pulled back, popping free of your lips once more, cum flooding from your bottom lip, dripping from your chin and covering the bottom half of your face. You stared up at him, messy and broken in the most beautiful of ways, used by the vampire for his more carnal needs, you had somehow found yourself feeling far more alive. Staring up at him again, you knew that your pants were soaked from your own arousal, and you wiggled in your spot a bit, whining needily.
Dropping a hand down, he would tip your chin up, staring at you, his fingers slicking with his own seed, though he kept your face level, staring down at you, “Mm…You listen so well. I’ll keep you around for a while…use you for blood…and sex…” He bit his lip slowly, letting his teeth drag from the plush of his bottom tier, “…you’d like that wouldn’t you?”
You couldn’t help but nod, the sound of the club outside the curtains still pulsing with music, the other patrons none the wiser that your face had just been fucked senseless. Drowned in his power, you wanted him, and you wouldn’t dare think of leaving his side, or disobeying, so you merely answered, “Yes, Master Hyungwon. I would very much like that.”
Dropping a hand, he would hook a finger in the choker you wore, pulling you up as if you were leashed. Staring into your eyes, he bore his teeth at you, and you could feel your blood pulse as if it were begging for him to drain you, and in many ways, it was. You knew he could so easily kill you—and one day, he just might. You swallowed hard, your throat moving against the finger that pressed against it. You had never felt more alive than with this undead King, never more full in heart and mind. He hissed through his teeth, hungry for more of youevery inch.
“Alright…then together we shall become entwined, deep…
…Into the night.”

Haunted Histories: Waverly Hills Sanatorium
[Cross posted on Urban Fantasy Blogging at Wordpress.]
Welcome to Urban Fantasy, a blog filled with content on haunted locations, urban legends, and cryptid histories. This is our first post on Haunted Histories and first up is the Waverly Hills Sanitorium in Louisville, Kentucky (my birth state)! For those who have no idea what a sanitorium is or why this location is on the list, let’s start with a rough overview.
A sanitorium is, typically, a place for people with a long-term or chronic illness. Waverly Hills in particular took care of those who were considered to be infected with a ‘plague’ in the time it served as a sanitorium, which was roughly 1926 to 1961. This building saw thousands of deaths, and not many of them were peaceful. First, though, let’s take a step back and talk about the plague that Waverly Hills dealt with.
When we talk about plagues that have wiped out millions of people, our thoughts tend to land on “the Black Plague,” but many would be surprised to know there’s a plague far more deadly. It’s been called “the plague of all plagues,” the “White Death,” and many more, but most tend to know it as tuberculous, or, TB.
First, what is TB? Tuberculosis is a dangerous infection that infects the lungs and, essentially, destroys them. Simply put, “Tuberculosis (TB) bacteria are breathed in through the nose and mouth and can enter the lung [and] Tuberculosis is spread through droplets put in the air by infected people who do not cover their mouths and noses when they cough” (1).
This isn’t just a disease that only affects certain parts of the world, either. “Tuberculosis (TB) is a global disease, found in every country in the world. It is the leading infectious cause of death worldwide” (2). While the disease was far more deadly back in the days when Waverly Hill was open, it’s still a deadly force, even today.
Dr Mario Raviglione, the WHO's tuberculosis director, said, "Tuberculosis and HIV are now competing to be the number one cause of death from infectious disease in the world. … Tuberculosis now ranks alongside HIV” (3). This is a terrifying disease that still plagues us and can lead to a gruesome end - which is where the haunted part of this history comes into play.
Waverly Hills Sanitorium was built in Louisville, Kentucky, and in 1900, “Louisville, Kentucky had the highest tuberculosis death rate in the country. This was due to the fact Louisville is such a low valley area and before development, was basically all swampland and perfect breeding ground for the Tuberculosis bacteria” (4).
As someone who lived in this state for 22 years, I can promise that’s not an exaggeration, either. The Ohio River and warm, muggy valleys and swamplands played as the perfect breeding ground for this plague, infecting thousands of people in its time. Being an airborne disease, there was little that could be done to stop such a rapid spread, especially when this was before the cure had even been found. It was a deadly, terrifying disease, and to put it into proper perspective, “[b]y the dawn of the 19th century, tuberculosis—or consumption—had killed one in seven of all people that had ever lived” (5)
It’s been said that tens of thousands died at Waverly during the height of the epidemic, but this is more of a lie than a myth. Overall it was estimated that over 8,000 people died on Waverly’s property, including worker suicides (6).
This also includes patients who underwent surgeries such as deflating a lung and removing ribs to give the lungs “more room to breathe” all without anesthetics (6) to those from when Waverly Hills was turned into a geriatric care center in 1962 that performed horrific experiments on the patients for non-existent conditions (7).
Now you’re starting to see where the haunted comes into play. Waverly Hills has seen more death and torture in its walls than can be fathomed. Suicides by depressed workers who could no longer handle the countless deaths, soldiers from World War II who were infected with illnesses that could not be fought, patients with TB who had no cure besides “fresh air and sunlight” and often died on the hour every hour, and elderly patients who were rumored to undergo torturous procedures such as shock therapy, lobotomies, and many others “treatments” all met their end in this building.
Haunted happenings have ranged from hearing voices telling people to get out to the smell of baking bread in the kitchens, to the sound of children laughing, to the sights of gathered shadow people. Yes, countless children died within the halls of Waverly Hills, as well.
A small part of the reason this Sanitorium saw so much death was that it functioned much like a miniature city. It was originally purchased by Major Thomas H. Hays in 1883 and was used as a home and school for his daughters before the city purchased the building and land to use due to the rapid increase in TB patients (8). As such, the land already had its own farm that was converted for patient use, but as patients increased, so did the need for more amenities.
“Waverly Hills had it’s own post office, water treatment facility, grew it’s own fruits and vegetables, raised it’s own meat for slaughter and maintained many of the other necessities of everyday life. Everyone at Waverly – patients, nurses, doctors and other employees had to say ‘goodbye’ to everything they knew on the outside world. Once you went to Waverly Hills, you became a permanent resident “on the hill” (9).
This was a horrifying reality, and “In 1916 a pavilion for children was opened at Waverly Hills. A schoolroom in one end of this building accommodating approximately 40 children, furnished with necessary equipment…” (10).
For many, many people, Waverly Hills was the last place they ever saw, and it was filled with death, decay, and the knowledge that they would likely never leave. It’s hardly any wonder the building is haunted to this day; especially in the area known as the Death Tunnel or “the Body Chute.”
This underground tunnel runs from the front entrance of the main building to the bottom of the hill and was originally over 500 feet long. It was used as a heating duct, originally, and to climb the hill safely in the winter, but during the TB years it was used to transport the dead so they wouldn’t be seen by any other patients in an effort to bolster morale. This means this tunnel saw thousands of dead bodies, many of them only deceased for a few hours or less by the time their body made the trip. Countless people today have said that the tunnel is “haunted by those who made their last journey through it” (11). It was to the point that a movie was named after it, Death Tunnel (2005), and filmed at Waverly Hills.
Interestingly enough, the reason the haunted hospital is so run down and broken is due to one of its last owners, a man who wanted the building condemned so he could build the world’s largest statue of Jesus Christ (that’s Kentucky for you). “He let vandals come into the building and tear it up. After breaking windows, porcelain sinks, toilets and doors, they began spraying graffiti on every available wall. The owner then dug around the foundation, in some places as deep as 30 feet, to try and make the foundation crack” (4). Needless to say, the man failed in his endeavor.
In 2001 Waverly Hills was sold to the current owners, Tina and Charlie Mattingly, who are paranormal enthusiasts and offer tours around Waverly Hills, all proceeds going to fix the building up and restore it.
As you’ve read, Waverly Hills Sanitorium was a place filled with tragic death and loss, but it’s important to keep in mind that it was also a place of healing and hope! This building was originally made to help people heal, and they did their best for the time period they were in. The building stands vacant, now, but, well… There are different meanings to the term vacant.
If you get a chance, I highly recommend exploring the building and trying your own look in spotting any who might be left behind. It’s not uncommon to hear children playing or to see nurses and doctors still making their rounds and checking on patients.
Just be careful of the underground tunnel that travels down the hill. There’s more than one place for a tunnel to let out, after all.

“It’s just pressing ‘A’ a bunch of times”: How to make turn-based JRPG Combat engaging
Abstract
In recent years many games have modified the formula that constitutes the turn-based jrpg combat systems in an effort to make the experience more engaging for players. In this article I first provide an exhaustive definition of what makes a games combat “turn-based jrpg combat” through a set of necessary properties. Additional properties that are commonly found yet not necessary are mentioned. An argument for how combat systems like this may inherently run the risk of not being engaging for plays is brought forward and multiple methods game developers have tried to solve this in the past are analyzed and evaluated: adding complexity, adding mechanical challenge through QTEs, adding visual flair, adding a gimmick and adding depth. It’s concluded that the optimal approach is using all of those methods in moderation while trying to avoid the pitfalls they come with.
I feel like in recent years game developers have come to regard turn-based JRPG combat in it’s purest form as inherently flawed. Many feel like they need to innovate, otherwise modern audiences will get bored, won’t feel engaged and play a more action-oriented or real-time strategy game instead. I would like to challenge this perception, explain ways how modern devs have tried to solve this problem.
What is turn-based combat?
First I want to define what I mean by “turn-based JRPG combat” (”tb combat” henceforth for the sake of brevity). This is not an easy task as most people will resort to an ostensive definition, naming games like Final Fantasy 7 and 3 (aka. 6), most of the Dragon Quest games, Mother 2 and 3, Suikoden, Chrono Trigger, Xenoblade, Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario, Pokémon, etc.. I agree that all of these are indeed JRPGs with turn-based combat but they’re also diverse enough that finding the least common denominator for these is anything but trivial. I think it is useful to give a well-defined description of each part that makes up the combat of games like these so I can refer to them with a general term later on. A game can be devided into what’s called scenes. Note that these are unlike scenes like those in movies or books, instead a scene in game development is a reoccurring state for whom layout, input-handling and other in-universe as well as algorithmic rules are defined. In JRPG there are often at least 3 scenes: the overworld scene is where the players moves their character, interacts with NPCs, enters houses, etc. The menu scene is where inventory managing is done, often different parameters about the game are displayed and equipment may be sold or equipped. A combat scene, then, represents the act of fighting something or someone in an abstract way. In Final Fantasy while in a designated overworld area the game may trigger a battle, encounter or what I will call “combat”. The entire layout changes, moving the cursor now selects an attack or enemy or an item instead of moving a character, you can only control the characters indirectly by selecting attacks or other such action and part of the screen has a menu from which to select these actions.
Figure 1: Boss battle against Ultros, Final Fantasy 6 (1994, SNES)
It is necessary for each entity participating in combat to have the same set of “stats”. A stat of any type such as a number of string or anything, really, is a property that can be interacted with through game mechanics while inside the battle scene. An easy example is Health (”HP”), usually all enemies and allies will have a number representing their health, dealing damage to an entity lowers this number, healing raises it. If the number reaches 0 the entity dies. Other examples of stats may include Mana or Action Points (”AP”), Attack, Defense, Speed, the name of the entity, etc.. I will consider the property (boolean) of wether or not a entity is an enemy or ally as a stat as well [1]. It is vital that each entity has the same set of stats, though some games may obfuscate them (such as the player not knowing how much AP the enemy has left). While this seems functionally indistinguishable from the entity not actually having the stat, this is not the case. It becomes important when considering abilities: an ability is any action that interacts with stats of any entity (or none). Since all entities have the same set of stats theoretically any ability could be executed by any entity. In my opinion this is a vital part of tb combat and all of the games commonly considered tb JRPG combat share this property [2]. If the player sees an enemy using an ability it will seem fair, they know that there’s a chance that they may get a similar ability later in game and more importantly, they know every entity is playing by the same rules. Later on I will discuss why this is extremely important for an engaging experience. A turn is a unit of measurements of arbitrary length. Each combat scene has to have the possibility of having at least <number of different entities> many turns. During a turn exactly one of the entities may choose an action such as using an ability or item, defending themself, fleeing, etc.. It is not imperative that entities may only act (that is choose an action) during a turn though most games follow this rule. Often the order of turns (the order of who acts before whom) depends on one or more stats or another property of the world or how the battle was started. For example in Pokémon the pokemon with the highest speed stat acts first but there are also abilities that make entities ignore this rule and always act first or even reverse the order of turns. In final fantasy and chrono trigger one of the stats of the entities is slowly rising, if the precentage bar is full entity may choose to act (c.f. figure 1, grey bar on the lower right of the screen) . This makes the order, length and number of turns flexible and the time in-between turns arbitrarily long (usually enemies act as soon as they are ready but the player can theoretically not start a turn until the battle ends), yet the turns still behave like in other tb combat systems. To summarizes, the combat scene of a game is considered “turn-based JRPG combat”, iff
all of the entities (both enemies and allies) have the same set of stats
the battle is divided into turns during which
abilities serve as a way to represent abstract combat, choosing abilities is the main gameplay
To finish of this section I’d like to give kind of a quick-fire round of properties that are commonly found in tb combat but that I don’t consider strictly necessary:
One of the stats is a “status” one or multiple out of a fixed number of them. Being afflicted with a certain status may have effects on the entity or the battle as a whole. For example a poisoned entity may loose HP over time, being stunned makes it so they can’t act during your turn, etc.. Being dead or knocked out may also be considered a status, it’s effect is being unable to act until resurrected.
Allies and Enemies can die or be knocked out (usually when their HP reaches 0). A dead enemy is removed from the battle, cannot be further interacted with unless resurrected. If either all enemies or all allies die the battle ends in a win- or fail-state respectively.
There is a visual representation of each entity such as sprites, names along with numbers or something similar (c.f. Figure 1). Resolving an ability has a visual representation, usually either an animation or sometimes just the changing of displayed numbers as damage is dealt.
Some of the abilities are instead considered “items”. These usually act as a one-time-use abilities, each entity may have a shared or individual inventory that contains multiple of these items. If one is used in combat it may vanish from the inventory, so for example if you have 3 bombs, using one in combat it will deal damage much like a regular ability would but instead of costing AP one will vanish from the inventory so only 2 are left. I refer to items acting this way as “usable items” (or “usables”)
Interaction with the game may be a lot more complex than just selecting something from a menu. This includes QTEs to block or attack, button combinations instead of selecting attacks, etc.. I will discuss these in a future section.
Winning the battle will reward the player party with experience or gold both of which may unlock new abilities or something similar outside of battle.
The set of entities may change over the course of the battle. This includes switching out team members, creating new ones (”spawning) with abilities or more entities joining for story reasons or something similar.
The combat scene itself may have certain properties. Examples include weather effects like rain, sandstorms or hail that apply a (de)buff or damage periodically. There may even be examples where the property breaks some of the rules of combat, for example an enemy attacking immediately after being struck outside of their turn. I will refer to these as “hazards”
An entities stats are dependent on their equipment, equipment are usually items that may be associated with a character by equipping them from the inventory outside of combat. For example equipping a metal helmet may grant the wearer more defense while equipping a magic ring will increase their magic power. Equipment systems can be very important to a game but if they can’t be engaged with during battle they are not technically part of it. An example of them being able to be interacted with are Pokémons held items.
Abilities may interact with each other. For example one ability may freeze an entity and another ability shatters them. In chrono trigger the players party members can team up for a single stronger attack that is dependent on who the participants are.
This list is not exhaustive, while the core axioms of the definition may not be diverged from, other aspects of the battle systems are hugely varied.
Realizing the Problem
Now that we have the technical stuff out of the way, let’s talk game design. There are two inherent complication to tb combat and they’re on the opposite side of a spectrum. For the sake of argument lets assume the difficulty is fixed at a certain level, no matter what mechanics exist or how they’re implemented. If tb combat is either too simple (that is the game requires little effort in understanding and applying the combats mechanics during strategizing) or too complex (that is understand and applying is too hard) it will result in the player having a bad experience. Why is that? Tb combat by nature is not mechanically challenging (at least in it’s basic form). Furthermore tb combat inherently contains a lot of actions that will be repeated over and over such as a entity loosing health, the player scrolling through a list, selecting which character to target, etc.. Tb combat has to rely on the mental aspect of it to be sufficiently challenging, even though a player may repeat a small set of actions hundreds of times if they have to think hard which action to pick when and strategize to solve the potentially extremely complex problems it will make for an engaging experience. It’s like doing homework for a subject that is really interesting to you, it’s fun to think about what to write, the act of writing itself is not. Similarly it’s fun to think about what actions to pick when and how to equip your characters and predicting what the enemy may do, selecting the options from a menu is not. If a tb combat system is too simple the player will spend most of the time not thinking about trying to come up with a solution, they will be stuck mindlessly doing the “writing things down” (pressing A) part. Because of the mathematical nature of interactions it’s also very easy to make a tb combat system too complex, if there’s hundreds of variables and interactions all going on at the same time the player won’t be able to solve or even understand the problem. If they can’t they again can only mindlessly press A. This is also why the fact that all entities have the same set of stats is so important, if the player is able to assume that they can strategize around all the entities playing by the same rules. They will know what the enemies abilities do and how they will affect other entities. If this symmetrical nature of combat is not present, the player will have trouble strategizing as suddenly everything can happen. This again leads to the player not being mentally challenged, all that’s left is pressing A.
How to Fix it
Naturally one will ask: How do we fix that? In my observation there are multiple approaches that are not mutually exclusive. I will explain which of these game devs took, why, and wether or not it can be successful:
i) Adding Complexity
Figure 2: Third party program for predicting damage dealt by one attack during a pokemon battle in Pokémon Sun & Moon (3DS, 2019)
This may be the most popular approach and can be observed in many well-reviewed successful games: If a simple battle system doesn’t engage the players, just add more. More mechanics, more abilities, more enemies, more items, more everything. A good example for this is the pokemon games. The game started out with about 150 pokémon, 4 stats, 15 types, no held items and 165 abilities (“moves”). Now, almost 15 years later we’re at 800 moves, 800+ pokemon, 18 types and countless new mechanics such as new hidden stats, held items, z-moves, mega-evolutions, etc.. I am not faulting pokémon for taking this route, one could argue it fits well with the collection aspect of that game but relating to pokémons combat specifically I think this more-is-better approach is anything but optimal. Side-Effects of using this approach are:
Redundancy: There are only so many good ideas to go around, once you go past that amount mechanics will be redundant. Pokemon may fullfill the same role, a move may have an objectively better version making it completely superfluous.
Readability: More things means more for the player to learn. This isn’t only related to tutorials, to truly be strategic and play at their best, players will have to learn bascially every move, every pokémon, every mechanic. Players who don’t won’t be able to strategize and as discussed above, this will decrease engagement.
Development Effort: This is not technically relevant to the player but more things means more chances for bugs to appear and obviously more work both as a programm, designers an artist.
Balancing: More moving parts means more interaction which makes balancing even harder. The recent pokémon generation cut almost half of all available pokemon citing the above mention growing workload and balance issues. All of the most well-balanced games from chess to star craft have one thing in common: they have as few pieces as possible.
All in all I think increasing the complexity when you think your battle system isn’t engaging past a certain point is rarely a good idea. Games that have a story-reason or collection aspect may still profit from this approach. I also want to make clear that adding complexity inherently is value-neutral. In my opinion every game needs a minimum of complexity to not be overly simple but I see many games taking the route of adding just more complexity past a certain point triggering the side-effects.
(Other games that used this complexity approach are: Suikoden and it’s 99 party members, dragon quest and it’s many monsters and equipment, earthbound with all it’s weird status effects and hidden enemy weaknesses. Note how most of these games are still amazing games but in my opinion their tb combat system would’ve been a lot better if they turned down the complexity a little) ii) Adding Mechanical Challenge
Figure 3: Action Command in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga (2003, GBA)
If the game isn’t engaging enough it’s not mentality challenged so the only thing left is pressing A which isn’t fun, why not make pressing A fun then? Many RPGs have gone about this by introducing timing or quick-time-event (”qte”) based mechanics tied to many game actions. Often during the attack animation a player will be tasked to hit a qte, if they fail the damage the attack may be redudde. Similarly there may be an additional input needed to defend, to flee, do certain attacks or sometimes even navigate the menu. Adding mechanical challenge will shift a tb combat system from something very abstract to something closer to resembling an action game. Games like the Mario RPG Series or Undertale have done this too great effect to the point where their battle systems only superficially resemble tb combat. While this is not necessarily a bad thing, it exemplifies my main issue with this: making the player allocate mental resources towards mechanical challenge will have to necessarily take away from the strategizing part. Again this isn’t bad or good, it simply changes the game, people who like action games will like this version of tb combat better, people who like strategizing will like it worse. Either way it’s a fact that games who went this route were highly successful and loved by many, sometimes even opening the target-audience so that some people who dislike most tb combat games will still play one that’s action-focused. I personally think the adding qtes is a valuable tool but going too far in that direction may take away from the original appeal of tb combat. Interestingly there is another option here, making the original way of interacting with the game more engaging while not adding any additional qtes or inputs: time limits. Limiting a players time in some way will make navigating menus more stressful and thus challenging. Time limit don’t necessarily have to be a ticking clock, a soft time limit such as Final Fantasies “active time battle” introduces the time limit in a way that doesn’t feel stressful yet rewards quick actions navigating the menus. [4] iii) Adding Flair
Figure 4: Animation for using a simple AoE slash attack in Octopath Traveler (Switch, 2019)
This option includes a wide selection of methods. While complexity focuses on the purely mental aspect and qtes focus on the purely mechanical aspect, adding flair will focus on the audio-visual one. The vast majority of time spend in tb combat will be watching menus and animations of the enemies moving, dying, attacks playing out, winning, etc.. Flair is not limited to visuals however, similarly adding music or even narrative elements will make the “watching things play out” part of tb combat a lot more enjoyable. Once again there is a trade-off here, if combat is too flashy the game may run the risk of reducing readability and making things hard to parse. Another common negative side-effect of this is that actions take too long to resolve because a lengthy animation has to play out. As flashy and stimulating as it may be watching the animation for the first time, if it takes 10s to finish and you will have to watch it hundreds of times it’s a good idea to give the player the option to turn off animations or give them a way to speed them up during battle. As with most games (including non tb-combat), adding flair is usually a good idea. A game that looks amazing and has a great soundtrack will usually be a better game for it. However it’s important to not go overboard as to not mar the interactivity and pacing of combat.
iv) Adding a Gimmick
Figure 5: Dialogue and social interaction with enemies during combat in Undertale (PC and others, 2015) The very first thing I want to say in this paragraph is that the word “gimmick” is used as a value-neutral term here (language barrier at work). With that out of the way, in the past few years more and more developers choose the approach of adding a mechanic that is not related to the set of base mechanics for tb combat outlined above, adding a gimmick. In Undertale (c.f. Figure 5), this is social interaction with enemies: Instead of attacking the player has the option of befriending or even romancing enemies. Damage values are replaced by the enemy responding with dialogue or a certain animation. Interacting with enemies this way will have effects on the overworld gameplay. This gimmick is mostly unique to undertale, yet there are countless different games with different gimmick. Possibilities are endless which is why most games will try to find their own gimmick, a thing only that game has. Being value-neutral this may add or detract from a game in general but the effect on the tb combat system is more palpable: Going outside tb combat framework has the risk of detracting from it, much like adding mechanical challenge in ii), adding a gimmick will necessarily decrease the complexity and depth of combat both mentally and mechanically. In summary adding a gimmick can be a great way to freshen up your otherwise stale combat system but in my opinion if a game dev is striving to make a great JRPG they have to be mindful of adding things that muddle that goal. Not striving for that goal while still wanting tb combat in your game can still results in an amazing and fun experience however. v) Adding Depth
The difference between complexity and depth is subtle yet crucial. Complexity is adding an entity, ability, stat or any other property an entity can have that was not originally part of the combat. Think adding a character, adding a new attack, adding a new component. Depth however is adding another interaction between already existing entities, abilities, etc. Adding depth will make combat more complex yet may not necessarily increase it’s complexity (depth and complexity can overlap and effect each other) as described in i). Examples of adding depth include:
making the AI scripts decision process more involved, for example each enemy entity may react to each others state (ideally dynamically, that is not following a fixed script) protecting their powerful yet vulnerable mage or trying to keep everyones health above a certain threshold
making the AI remember things the player did such as analyzing which move the player likes to use often and then preparing for that move in the future
making it so passive effects are not encapsulated but may increase/decrease/interact with each other. For example a ring may increase strength but gain an additional amount of damage when the players defense is boosted. Equipping another ring that boosts defense at the cost of strength will give the additional effect of the first ring. If the player now has an ability that lets say increases each buff to damage by 50%, the player will have to think about which combination of items to use and if the interaction is beneficial. There is no easy solution
making abilities interact, for example one ability may increase the next abilities damage and another ability may bounce from enemy to enemy 10 times but only do very little damage. If the order of execution is based on the parties speed values for example, the player will have to manipulate the speed such that the damage boost happens before the bouncing effect so damage buff will increase 10 fold.
status effects reacting to each other, for example trying to burn an already frozen enemy will thaw them, cooling a burning enemy will cure the burn
You may notice a trend in these examples, a lot of them are rules in the form of “if x and y, then z” where x and y are already existing mechanics or properties. Because both x and y already exist, adding depth will bypass a lot of the pitfalls of adding complexity while still gaining most of the benefits. It will make combat a lot more complicated but also interesting as suddenly strategizing isn’t just picking the clearly optimal option, it’s thinking through all of the interactions trying to find out which combination (and order) of actions will do the most damage. The more moving parts interact with each other the more dynamic the battle will feel while still being initially easy to understand because keeping the number of entities, abilities, stats, etc. low like this will cut down on time spend learning what everything is and instead make for more time experimenting, learning through interaction and emergent situations. I’m very much in favor of adding depth but it’s not always positive. Adding too much depth will inherently increase complexity and thus cause the same problems mentioned above. Furthermore adding depth will make the combat system harder to balance: if the game dev designs the system in a way where most of the interactions are emergent and not hardcoded they will have to do more testing and thinking things through to keep stuff from spiraling out of control (though to be honest it can be very satisfying to figure out a game-breaking combination if it’s complicated enough but the point still stands). In summary trying to reach an appropriate level of depth for your combat system is always a good idea in my opinion. Be aware that going too far may make things too complicated or unpredictable though.
Conclusion
I hope I made clear that I’m in favor of all of the methods mentioned above as long as each one is used appropriately and sparingly. Sometimes it’s okay to shift the game as a whole away from combat into more action- or narrative-oriented but if the developer decides that their game should have tb combat, any of the techniques mentioned above can be a valuable tool.
Addendum: Closing words
I want to end this piece with a little personal anecdote, as you can imagine I played a lot of games with tb combat, most notably I spend most of my teens on pokémon tournaments and playing old gems like earthbound that weren’t available to me as a child. I’m going to be honest, I didn’t like most of these games. When I played LISA: The Painful, I had a hate-love relationship with it. I thought the combat was pointless and shallow, the environment art was terrible and the story was overly edgy and not subtle enough. It took me 6 attempts to finish the masterpiece that is Mother 3 and even then I gave up 70% in and watched a let’s play instead because I didn’t want to grind and the music-related combo system just didn’t work for me. I played FF6 when I was in college and I was bored to death, every time there was a random battle from walking through blank space I groaned internally, doing the battles just felt like “deal damage, then heal, then deal damage, then heal” over and over for the entirety of the game. Honestly there really wasn’t ever a game with tb combat that I though flawless or at least as good as possible. Of course because I was a pretentious amateur I figured “I’ll just make my own game and make it better than all of them”. The more I tried to actually do that the more I realized that these weren’t flaws at all. There isn’t an optimal way to do things. While I still think it’s true that all of these games didn’t live up to my tastes, that has no barring on their quality or how successful they are in realizing their vision. What I’m trying to say is: You shouldn’t try to design tb combat in a way that is the best, you should try to design it so you, the designer, will like it best. Choose from any of the design methods mentioned above but be aware that there isn’t a concrete answer, there isn’t one specific point after which the bad side-effects of certain methods kick in. Just do a game you would love, if you do that I can promise you there’s a good chance that someone else will too.
Footnotes
[1] “is an enemy” is considered a stat since the game may allow for the property to be interacted with, such as when an enemy charms an ally and makes them fight for the enemy team or when an enemy dies and is thus pacified. [2] I realize that this assertion isn’t falsifiable since if an tb combat system doesn’t share that property, it isn’t a tb combat system by definition. Apart from that I still believe that this property is crucial and most games I can think of share it. For the remainder of this piece it is asserted that tb combat has to be symmetrical.
[3] note: I will use pokémon as example to illustrate my points, if you are not familiar with the pokemon battle system consider skimming through this article though I don’t think it’s necessary to understand the combat system fully
[4] An additional way to introduce a soft limit that I honestly have not seen or used anywhere yet is limiting the amounts of menu inputs a player can do in some way. In rat_game specifically there will be one boss that instead of attacking when it’s their turn will attack every 5 menu inputs. This means a player is not necessarily limited by time but rather has to navigate the menus as efficiently as possible, otherwise they risk being attacked more than necessary.

Girl nextdoor
REAL LIFE
COUPLE TBS X READER
RATING SMUTT
"Thomas! Go help your mother with the washing!" My dad yelled as I sat in my room playing London racer, some little game I picked up cheap where you race a classic mini around the London eye
"Uhhh dad! I'm busy!" I yelled back
"Now!" He ordered so I sighed pausing my game and going down into the garden to help my mum while Ava ran around doing something im not sure what?
"Why do I have to help and Ava doesn't?" I complain
"Thomas!" He warns leaning in the patio door "don't get smart with me, else I'm taking your TV"
"But it's not fair!" I complain
"Thomas go to your room!" He ordered
"Thank you" i smiled going to go but he grabbed my shirt
"I'm taking your TV, and your playstation" he says going upstairs but I ran up to my room as fast as I could but he was already unplugging it
"Dad! That's not fair!" I yelled
"I warned you, I understand your going through some kind of teen angsty phase Thomas but enough of it, your grounded until you sort out this attitude problem" he says as he left the room with my TV and my games consoles so I slammed my bedroom door and laid on my bed, until
"Hello?" A little voice giggled from my window
"I'm not in the mood y/n!" I tell her
"I brought you mashmellows" she giggled
"You can leave them on the desk" I sighed but I heard steps and felt her poke my arm "what?" I groan "what do you want y/n?" I ask turning to see her
Whoa! What in holy hell happened to her!
I hadn't seen her since I came home from my last shoot, i- I was only gone three months!
Her hair had been cut off to a pixie almost, her thick glasses still perched on her nose as normal hiding the little freckles there, she had a little shirt with some graphic thing in it I could see her white bra strap where the shirt had slipped away, speaking of which, they where huge! They went exactly little when I left!, and a little short leatherette skirt with blue leggings hugging he thick things close
"Something the matter Thomas?" She asks confused why I had just frozen looking at her
"Wh wh wha wha what happened to you!" I ask in shock
"Ohh? Puberty I guess, yeah, I kinda missed it all" she blushed
"Yeah... I missed it" I nodded blushing hard
"You look nice though" she smiled sitting on my bed with me fixing a stay bit of her hair
"Thank you, but... As much as I want to see you y/n, I'm grounded" I told her
"Ohh I see" she giggled "it's okay, I'll sneak you food and things to do, here you can borrow my ds" she smiled pulling it out her top
"Y- you can fit a whole ds down your bra now?" I ask and she nods handing it to me giving me a hug and climbing out my window and back to her house I sat shocked a while I couldn't stop thinking about her I put her ds on my bedside table unable to think straight, what the hell is happening to me?
I laid laying y/n's ds, for a while mostly just play germ buster on brain training with the sound only in my earbuds till I yawned so I turned it off getting cosy in my bed to get some sleep, I hugged my pillow tightly, I just felt so happy and cosy in my bed Tonight I heard a giggle which made me jump I looked to my window and nothing, she wouldn't be coming over this late anyway so I put a blanket over me trying to fall asleep...
"Ohh Thomas" that sweet voice called to me, I have a thousand memories of that voice of hers but I loved hearing it tonight "heheheh Tommy"
"Umm y/n" I smirked falling deeper into my sleep,
When I woke I could hear the birds tweeting in the garden and I yawned having a stretch but I felt weird
"Hahahaha Thomas was sexy dreaming!" Ava laughed as she stood in my room "ohhh y/n, ohh Thomas!" She laughs
"Ava! Get out of my room!" I yelled throwing a pillow at her and she ran off out my bedroom I sighed going to get out of bed but I felt awful I pulled my covers back and - oh fuck!
I quickly jumped out of bed, best I could given I had some serious morning wood quickly getting my boxers off and getting a clean pair on ohh how the hell am I gonna deal with my bedsheets? Maybe If I completely strip the bed and tell my mum I changed it maybe she won't ask questions and won't look at the sheet
"Thomas?" A gigglely voice asks so I threw my boxers into the bed and climbed back in hidding everything as she climbed in the window "hi" she smiled
"Hi" I smiled
"You okay?" She asks
"Uhh yeah, yeah you uhh you woke me up that's all" I blush
"Heheheh relax Thomas, I've seen you in bed before, we use to have sleepovers remember" she laughs as she came sitting in the bed with me "are you okay? You seem... distant from me?" She asks
"Hu? Why would you think that?" I ask
"You've been acting odd since you came back, I get it, don't exactly wanna be hanging around with some stupid girl now your all grown up" she says
"No no y/n, it's not that" I tell her holding her hand
"Then what?" She asks
"It's... It's hard to explain" I told her "I don't really understand all of it right now but I promise, it's not that I don't want to spend time with you" I told her
"Yay!" She smiled Hugging my chest so I hugged her too she smiled leaving me some more games and heading off home I breathed alittle now she's gone, that didn't help the morning wood! A beautiful sexy girl climbing in my window at half ten in the morning
I hummed as I pegged my clothes on the line luckily I had managed to sneak anything I didn't want my parents to find away in my own laundry so they wouldn't find it currently doing a whole bunch I my boxers including the ones from the other morning
"Hi Thomas?" A little voice giggled I looked at the fence and saw y/n
"Y/n! Hi! Uhhhh hello" I blushed trying to cover up my underwear
"Relax Thomas, nothing I haven't seen before" she giggled winking at me and Running off.
I sighed sitting in my bed I got my stuff back so I was sat playing some games in the dark, I out of boredom during a loading screen I looked out my window spotting the little light next door I got up and looked, out of curiosity but when I did, I saw y/n stood in her room in just her bra and panties I felt like I was gonna explode she looked beautiful, sexy, irresistible like I'd give the word to get my hands on her I hid myself away shutting my curtians and trying to not think about what I saw shutting my game off and trying to get some sleep but I knew I couldn't it hurt! It pulsed and ached! I don't know what to do! I normally just wait for it to go down, but I can't fall asleep like this even if I did I'm just going to repeat the other week, I thought for ages trying to make it go down, but I felt my hand slip down my stomach and into my boxers not sure why I only really do that if my hands are cold, but I gripped the hard shaft and my eyes rolled back it felt so good I instantly Ran my hand up and down it feeling amazing I couldn't stop my hand working on its own, my head only thinking about one thing... About my pretty little y/n, how amazing she looks now how badly I wanted my hands on her pretty body, how badly I I I want to kiss her and touch her, "uuuhhh y/n!" I groan trying to stop myself from being nosy so my parents and sister won't hear me "uumm uuummmm Y/n..." I wanted her more then I ever have before my beautiful sexy y/n just have her climb in my room in those little dresses and skirts I knew I should stop but I couldn't make myself no Matter how hard I tried to stop "oooh y/n.... Uhh uuuhh" I groaned rolling my head on my pillow when a sudden overwhelming Wave of pleasure washed over me it twinged in my cock but flowed to my head and the tip my toes I couldn't breathe I couldn't think it felt so so good till it stopped. I was eaughsted laid on my bed catching my breath I couldn't even get the strength to open my eyes or move my hand I smirked happy with my little secret and turning over to get some sleep.
I yawned as I stretched getting out of my bed it's been a few weeks since my... Humm my first time doing it, and I'm not gonna lie I might have a problem. Every night before I go to sleep, every morning before I get dressed, every one I have a bath, any time I'm alone, my hands in my pants I couldn't help it it just feels so nice I didn't want to stop I sat on my bed checking my phone nothing important so I went down getting a drink and noticed the house was empty, they had all gone out they'll be back later so a note said so I shrugged and got dressed sitting in bed watching TV having my hand down my jeans, not even to play with myself I just kinda like having my hand down my pants
"Hello?" She giggled so I quickly took my hand out and did my jeans back up
"Hey" I smiled as she climbed in the window "my parents aren't here y/n, you could have used the door" I laughed
"Now you tell me" she sighed coming and sitting on the other side of my bed "hi"
"Hi" I blushed it was strange having her sat on my bed given everything I've been... doing in my bed lately,
"I brought a movie" she says handing me a dvd box so I had a look
"Why did you bring a nature documentary?" I ask
"Looked interesting could learn something Thomas" she laughs getting up and going to sort my TV I got up and had a stretch walking past her
"I guess so, alright.. you do that I will make popcorn" I told her giving her cheek a kiss as I went past, wait... What the hell did i kiss her for! I froze realizing what I had done
"Uhhh okay," she laughs blushing a little "what was that for?" She asks
"I uhhhhh I ummm I umm well I uhgg" I stutter unable to form any words of any sort of excuse for why the bloody hell I kissed her
"Hehe Don't worry about it Tommy, well talk about it later" she smiled giving my cheek a kiss I blushed hard it feeling like burning where she kissed me I quickly ran downstairs to avoid her eyes making some popcorn and getting some other snacks for us even a bottle of fizzy pop and taking it all up to my room, once I got there she had pulled my curtains and the light was off, all but my little lamp on my bedside table and the light from the TV she was sat against the headboard on my side of my bed where I normally sleep Hugging one of my pillows close to her I smiled blushing hard looking at her in my bed we sorted all the snacks out at the end of the bed so they weren't in the way and she smiled patting the space beside her
"Uhhhh y/n, I just, just give me a minute I have to go do something" I tell her
"Okay" she nods giving my cheek another kiss I blushed just as hard as before I not more I went to go but she grabbed my arm "Don't I got a kissy too?" She giggled as she pulled so I sat on the edge of my bed
"Uhh yeah, sorry I uhh" I blushed
"Don't you want to kiss me?" She asks interwining our fingers so I held her hand
"No no no! Of course I do" I said to her "I'm just... Not the best with people, you know that y/n" I told her giving her cheek a kiss "five minutes I promise" I reasure her kissing her hand so she would let me go and she did so I went to my door and she looked upset "five minutes, and I'll be back y/n" I smiled
"Okay" she giggled tucking herself in my bed and blowing me a kiss so I blew her a kiss too before I left my room the second I shut the door I bolted down the corridor to the bathroom ohh my fucking god I kissed her! And she's kissing me! Could I actually get a kiss of y/n? Or maybe even something better! I didn't know what to do to calm down so I brushed my teeth I already did this morning but if our kisses get more serious then I don't want to be worried about it, I didn't know what to do about...the obvious jeans problem, I'm my bed I'll be so tempted to just stick my hands down them, so I undid my jeans quickly Rubbing going as fast as I could thinking of those heavenly kisses umm I want those sexy lips all over me
"Thomas you okay?" She asks from the other side of the door
"Yeah! I'm fine!" I force out trying to keep going hearing her voice helped alot
"Alright, I'm gonna start an episode okay" she says
"Okay, just give me a couple more minutes" I answered just as I "ummmmmm!" I bit m mouth hard to stop myself screaming as I finished into the sink and crashed into the waves of pleasure I smirked and sorted myself out, washing my hands and face as well as putting alot more deodorant and Body spray and fixing my hair so I looked good for her calming down and going back to my room "what did I miss?" I ask sitting on my bed with her
"Uhh the into, and something about lions" she says eating popcorn
"Fun" I laughed quickly getting some popcorn before she ate it all watching the show a while, they where talking about sloths, y/n likes sloths, not sure why... She finds them cute
"Thomas look it's you" she says pointing to the sloth
"Why is it me?" I asked
"Because your lazy, cute and fluffy" she says resting her head on my shoulder
"Aww... Thanks y/n" I smiled resting my head on hers while she was watching I took her hand again making her smile a little more giving my cheek another kiss I blushed hard looking at her nuzzled on my shoulder I smiled and gave her nose a tiny kiss making her giggle like crazy she smiled looking at me I couldn't help blushing harder looking into her eyes I wanted to kiss her to really kiss her and I think she wanted to as well I went to lean In but -
My phone went off so I grabbed it, it was my mum, y/n moved away a little when I answered
"Hi?" I ask
"Hello, were popping into the store after this did you need anything?" She asks
"Uhh no I'm good" I answered after a few more little things she hung up so I sighed putting my phone away "sorry" I told her
"It's okay" she shrugs watching the TV hardly looking at me we sat quietly for a while till I got an idea I yawned and stretched putting my arm around her making her laugh "really? The old yawn arm around Thomas? That's as old as the hills" she laughs
"It worked didn't it?" I shurg and she nods moving to wrap her arms around my neck so I wrapped my other arm around her waist sitting my hands on her waist she smiled licking her bottom lip as she looked at me I froze unsure really what to do but she moved forward pressing her soft lips against mine, it was like heaven to kiss her, her lips soft and smooth perfectly warm and just wet enough I kissed back best I could and she pulled me closer our kiss deepening as she tilted her head a little moving her lips against my own I kissed her back trying my best to keep up with her till we got into a slow and sweet rythum we kept like this for what felt like forever I never wanted to stop just then her tongue licked across my bottom lip I froze unsure how to respond I slightly opened my mouth letting her tongue slip in she played and toyed with my own so I did it a little to her too, she tasted like honey and apple juice and a little of the salt from the popcorn we had even eating till she moved it away so I slipped my tongue in her mouth and she played and toyed with me still even slightly sucking on my tounge which is what made me pull away
"Something wrong Thomas?" She asks
"Wrong? Ohh no, I just uhh need to get breath back honey" I tell her making her giggle more
"Your a good kisser Thomas" shs smiled
"Thanks, your a great kisser y/n" I told her "in fact could I uhh... Could I kiss you again?" I ask and she nods so I pulled her back and kissed her again still losing myself in everything about her I shifted a little in bed slightly uncomfortable when I felt it so I pulled away and moved away from her arms
"Thomas what's wrong?" She asks
"Ohhh uhhh.... Nothing" I blushed trying to hide it with my arms but I think by her face I think she might have known
"It's alright Thomas I know" she laughs "it has been poking my leg the last half hour"
"It has?" I ask and she nods "I'm sorry honey I didn't mean to-"
"Thomas it's alright, your a boy, I'm not surprised it happened I mean it was some pretty serious kissing" she smiled "I was expecting you to its alright"
"Your sure?" I ask and she nods
"I mean, you could always play around with me while we're kissing if you wanted" she smiled
"I I I I I could?" I stutter
"If you like to" she smiled "and maybe if you did I would play too and sort any problems that arise" she smirked
"Uhhh okay" I nod blushing very hard giving her another kiss she giggled giving me a kiss too soon enough we where back to making out I was about to move my hands and -
The door opened and my bedroom light clicked on so I quickly pulled away putting some distance between me and y/n
"What where you to doing up here?" My dad asks
"Nothing" i answered
"In your room? in the dark? In bed?" He asks
"Watching TV" she smiled
"Alright, you should head home now y/n, your parents will be worried" he said leaving my room and we sighed
"That was close" i blushed
"Indeed it was, my house tomorrow, we can lock the door" she winked getting her stuff
"Uhhh y/n, before you go... I- I really do like you, and if we're gonna keep kissing an stuff I I'd really like us to... Be something" I explain and she giggled at me
"Of course Thomas" she smiled kissing me "see you Tomorrow, my sweet boyfriend" she smiled
"Tomorrow, my beautiful girlfriend" I smiled giving her one more kiss before she went off home.
