1. How tall are you? 5’6″ and a half. Yep pretty average. 

2. What color and style is your hair? Dark brown and a long wavy bob.

3. What color are your eyes? Hazel. 

4. Do you wear glasses? Hell yeah, I do! Most of the time it’s just contact lenses est. middle school. lol 

5. Do you wear braces? Unfortunately no. My teeth are in good shape with some that are pointy like fangs (good for getting plastic tags off clothes) and my wisdom teeth giving me no hell. 

6. What is your fashion style? It’s mixed. I’ve been trying to slowly get onto the 70′s/80′s wardrobe revamp without making it look costumey but right now it just consists of band tees, ringer shirts, crop tops, crop sweaters, flannel, cozy scarves, high waisted skinny jeans and a few pieces of jewelry. It’s a hipster mess despite that I haven’t worn a skirt in years. 

7. Full name? how about no??? You crazy dutch bastard? Unless you’re a close friend, my family, all you need to know that I’m Kelsey babes. 

8. When were you born? I’m a Scorpio. That’s the tea and it’s all you need to know. 

9. Where are you from and where do you live now? I’m a Western Canada babe!!!! I still live in Western Canada for school but I would like to leave the country and go live/work as an artist in England so badly. 

10. What school do you go to? I would rather not say for the sake of my privacy. 

11. What kind of student are you? Take art geek, theatre geek, music geek, film geek, perfectionist, test anxious, high achiever, honor roll, manga reader, anime geek, and can score B’s/C’s in math/science. Blend all of that into a smoothie and you’ve got me. 

12. Do you like school? Yes, I do like school. Meeting new people, having amazing teachers that give a damn about you succeeding, doing extracurricular activities, and learn more about skills handy for my career, but it was horrendous having to go through science and math which got fairly better during high school. 

13. What are your favorite school subjects? Fine art, theatre, music, history, English literature, gym, and homeroom.

14. Favorite TV shows? Avatar the Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra, Steven Universe, Voltron: Legendary Defender, Rick and Morty, Doctor Who, The Simpsons, Gurren Lagaan, BBC’s Sherlock, My Hero Academia, and Gilmore Girls(I really want to watch Mr. Robot, but I’m having such a hard time watching it without getting a membership for Hulu).

16. Favorite books? Pride and Prejudice, To Kill a Mockingbird, Nineteen Eighty-Four, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, Fullmetal Alchemist (technically a manga), The Adventures of Tintin (a comic book), The Dark Between Stars (poetry), Debutantes, Coraline, Harry Potter book series, and The Vanishing Season. 

17. Favourite past-time? Walking and exploring downtown, working out at the gym, going into my favorite shops to browse, riding my bike, drawing, crafting, writing, hanging out with friends whenever I can, and reading on a rainy day. 

18. Do you have any regrets? Who doesn’t? I’m trying to be less regretful of what happened in the past and live for the present.

19. Dream job? Artist! Which means doing stuff like writing/illustrating my own graphic novel series, direct a feature-length traditional animated film, work on animation/character design/backgrounds for animation studios, and selling my own art pieces in an art gallery. 

20. Would you like to get married? Of course, I would! That is when the right person walks into my life. Besides, I already have an idea in mind for what I would wear (if you guys want to know, I’m thinking of Freddie’s suit from Fashion Aid ‘85). 

21. Would you like to have kids someday? I haven’t thought much about it. Maybe I’ll adopt a cat when I can live in a flat building that welcomes them. 

22. How many? As I said, I haven’t thought much about it right now. 

23. Do you like shopping? Yes always! Consignment shopping is fun, I like shopping for gifting family and friends, along with shopping for vinyl records and 

24. What countries have you visited? A couple of US states (California, Montana, Tennesse, Iowa, and Maui, one of the Hawaiian islands) and England. I can’t afford to travel at the moment but would love to go back and experience England for a week. 

25. What’s the scariest nightmare you’ve ever had? Nope, I’m not sharing my dreams are too surreal and abstract. 

26. Do you have any enemies? I did have a couple back in my hometown, but I pay no mind since they’re not my problem. 

27. Do you have a s/o? Someone to love? Nope, but it would be nice to have someone to love one day.

28. Do you believe in miracles? I don’t have much bias in miracles. I think you can actively put in an effort to make those miracles happen (through visiting someone who is sick, treating them with their favorite thing and raising funds to support them) rather than just letting fate handle it.

Well, that happened quickly 49! Wow! I know a lot of people get depressed about hitting milestones like 40, 50, or 60 but for me, I feel like each decade gets better so it doesn’t stress me out about hitting the next milestone.  Age is just a number, so I can honestly say I have no problems with turning 50 next year, which isn’t surprising because I didn’t have any problems with turning 40 several years ago.

Bring on the Botox

Now, I’m not saying I’m a fan of some of the “gifts” getting older has to offer, like the deepening lines and wrinkles, the worsening eyesight (hello, readers!), the stiffness and creaking in my joints, among other fun things that aging brings to the table.  I’m fully on board for face creams and Botox as needed!  I’m not trying to fight the clock, but I have already invested in veneers for my teeth and hair extensions, which I consider methods to enhance my appearance as I age, not necessarily ways to try to look younger.

My forties have been my best decade yet, so I can only assume my fifties will be even better.  In thinking about what 50 will have in store for me, I decided to reflect on what happened over the past 9 years and what I have planned for this final year of my forties.  When I started mentally cataloging my accomplishments, adventures, failures, and thoughts, I was surprised at just how much travelling we did and also by how many different things I did.  If variety is the spice of life, things are pretty spicy (not smoking hot, but spicy)!

Hair extensions gave me the fullness my thin, fine hair just didn’t have on its own.

Make new friends, but keep the old

I made lots of new friends in my forties, and lost some along the way as well, but that’s OK because the new ones have become some of my favorite people and are like sisters to me.   Besides losing some friends and gaining new ones, I also had the opportunity to reconnect with old friends (gold friends!) a few times over the last decade.  I feel very lucky to have so many of these people in my life for over 30 years, and what is truly special is even though many years and thousands of miles separate us, we can all pick up where we left off when we do get back together.  That’s magic.

The relationships that have changed the most over the last decade are the relationships I have with each of my daughters.  When I turned 40, they were just 11 and 13 and now they are soon to be 21 and 23.  I was surprised to realize just how different the relationships I have with your adult children are from the relationships I had with my teenage children.  I can honestly say I like the adult relationships much better!  Truly my greatest accomplishment, my daughters have both grown into incredible young women and I actually enjoy hanging out with them now.

From the time I turned 40 up until now, I have been lucky enough to go on lots of trips.  I absolutely love to travel and if I had the means, I’d do it every month.  I have been to many other places not on this list prior to turning 40, but during my forties (besides cruising all over Georgia) I went to:

But, what did I do?

At the start of the decade, I was not working.  I made the decision to stay home with the kids and help my husband with his business towards the end of 2009.  So, when I turned 40, I was deep in the throws of PTA, cheerleading booster club, and running a small custom cake business on the side as well as helping out in our convenience store.  I went back to work full time when I was 43 and have since worked for 3 companies (a Fortune 500, a Fortune 7, and a small independent firm) as a project manager.

I’ve been a PTA president, a cheer booster club president, hosted bingo nights, and served on countless committees.  I’ve driven carloads of kids to and from basketball games, football games, swim meets, and cheer competitions, and chaperoned dances and field trips.  I’ve baked hundreds of cakes and cupcakes and spent countless hours in my kitchen mixing up icing.  I’ve cashed lottery tickets, stocked drink coolers, taken inventory and dealt with vendor and customers.  I’ve managed technical projects, budgets, programs, and team members.  I’ve prepared countless presentations, reports, and spreadsheets.  I’ve even been laid off twice and all three of my jobs that I’ve held in my forties found me – I didn’t have to find them – thanks to keeping in touch with former colleagues.

I helped my husband with all kinds of construction projects including the remodel 4 houses, and the build out of a new business.  I’ve painted, caulked, scraped, sanded, lifted, loaded, and hauled.  I’ve been on ladders and rooftops, handled power tools, and had my physical strength (and patience) tested.

I ran several 5K races over the last 9 years including the Warrior Dash twice.  I’ve gained weight, and lost weight fluctuating nearly 60 pounds from the high point to the low point.  I’ve had one surgery.  I’ve attended countless concerts and music festivals in several different states and countries.

So when I think I haven’t accomplished much in life, because I haven’t raised a million dollars for charity or because I’m not the CEO of a big corporation or because I haven’t become Instagram-famous, I instead need to remind myself of all that I have done – because it’s a lot.  Among all of this, I even managed to raise two teenage girls without losing my mind:  middle school, high school, college.  That in and of itself is huge.

For my 49th year, I want to learn to give myself more credit, rid myself of doubt, and gain a little more confidence in my abilities.  I want to see some new places (hello, Greece!) and try some new things.  I want to not only maintain the relationships in my life, but also nurture them so I can be a better wife/mom/daughter/sister/friend.

A recent study shows that drinking water in Iowa City, Iowa is contaminated with insecticides. The implications of this disturbing discovery could be detrimental to public health.

A new study published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology Letters, titled ‘Occurrence of neonicotinoid insecticides in finished drinking water and fate during drinking water treatment’ [i] has reported disturbing findings. Although neonicotinoid insecticides are widespread in surface waters across the agriculturally intensive Midwestern United States, the investigation released from The University of Iowa is the first peer-reviewed study to alert the public of the presence of the chemicals in their tap water. The study states:

“We report for the first time the presence of three neonicotinoids in finished drinking water and demonstrate their general persistence during conventional water treatment.”

In 2016 following maize and soy planting, finished drinking water samples were collected from taps at The University of Iowa and at three locations in Iowa City, IA. The study shows that samples collected from The University of Iowa drinking water treatment plant suggest that clothianidin and imidacloprid persist throughout conventional water treatment processes, while thiamethoxam is partially removed. The study found clothianidin, imidacloprid, and thiamethoxam were ubiquitously present (i.e., 100%) in all samples (n = 16) collected from University of Iowa tap water, with concentrations ranging between 3.89 and 57.3 ng/L, between 1.22 and 39.5 ng/L, and between 0.24 and 4.15 ng/L, respectively.

In July 2016, the first systematic review of the literature on human health effects of neonicotinoids was conducted and later published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives.[ii] The researchers concluded”

“…studies reported associations between chronic neonic exposure and adverse developmental outcomes or a symptom cluster including neurological effects.”

There is currently no national effort measuring to what extent neonicotinoids are making it into our bodies, be it through water or food. However, neonicotinoids have been no stranger to bad press over the recent years. After it was found that the insecticides may be responsible for the declining bee population, Monsanto purchased leading bee research firm Beelogics to stifle research. In 2016, Syngenta was outed by Dr. James Cresswell from The University of Exeter in England. Dr. Cresswell – an expert in flowers and bees – accepted research funding from Syngetna but was quickly pressured by the corporation when his findings pointed to their neonicotinoid insecticides having a role in the declining bee populations.

A spotlight on the dangers and pervasiveness of contamination from agrochemical toxins in the environment, food supply, vaccines, and our bodies has been catapulted to center stage in recent years. The continued discovery and reporting of willful deception from agrochemical corporations regarding the dangers of their products has hit breakaway speeds. In California, the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) has determined that the herbicide glyphosate will be added to the list of chemicals known to cause cancer. The OEHHA announcement comes as a flurry of lawsuits is hitting Monsanto – the manufacturer of glyphosate – for cancers caused by their flag-ship herbicide. One of those court cases recently uncovered documents strongly suggesting that Monsanto had ghostwritten research that was later attributed to academics. The documents also indicated that a senior official at the Environmental Protection Agency had worked to quash a review of glyphosate. According to other lawsuits detailed in a new report from the Environmental Working Group the chemical 1,2,3-trichloropropane –a byproduct in Dow's Telone and Shell's D-D pesticides – contaminated the tap water supplies of 94 California utility districts serving 8 million people.

Do farmers have to use toxic agrochemicals to stay competitive? A March 2017 study published in the peer-reviewed journal Nature Plants titled ‘Reducing pesticide use while preserving crop productivity and profitability on arable farms’ [iii] analyzed the pesticide use, productivity and profitability of almost 1,000 farms of all types across France and came to the conclusion:

“We failed to detect any conflict between low pesticide use and both high productivity and high profitability in 77% of the farms.”

Independent labs have begun testing food products for the presence of glyphosate in the wake of an official refusal to do so by The U.S. Department of Agriculture. Given the widespread contamination of water and food, it is not radical to propose a moratorium on agrochemical use, as Maui tried in 2014, until further [independent] research on the impact the chemicals are having on the environment and humanity as a whole.
