I know the metroid timeline is purposely pretty vague, but do you have a headcanon for how long it's been since metroid 1? I figure it has to be at least a few years, even in the games themselves don't take place over a long period of time each
I think my initial off-the-cuff guesstimate would be somewhere in the vicinity of eight to ten years, with Samus in Zero Mission being in her mid twenties, and in her early-mid thirties as of Dread. Wanna double-check what little canon info there is later to make sure there aren't any glaring contradictions, and it's hard to say how Prime 4 may alter things or not, but here's my rough guesses about the timeskips between games.
Zero Mission to Prime - A couple years, enough time for the escaped frigate Orpheon to set up shop on Tallon IV before Samus comes calling. For simplicity, let's round to an even number; my instinct would be to say two years, but apparently one source says it is actually three. I'll split the difference and say 2 Years, 6 Months.
Prime to Hunters - A couple months at most, mainly because I'm pretty sure it was said explicitly somewhere that Prime and Echoes were six months apart. 2 Years, 8 Months
Hunters to Echoes - A few months, probably a slightly bigger space on this end of Hunters, but still not too long, in keeping with the aformentioned six-month gap. 3 Years.
Echoes to Corruption - Approximately a year, give or take, allowing for Urtraghus's near-complete seed conversion (unimpeded compared to Tallon IV) and creation of Urtraghan Pirate Phazon Cult, along with the other logistics groundwork laid for their massive attacks seen in the game. 4 Years.
Corruption to Federation Force - Merely a few months, as Samus would still have to have been recovering from her phazon corruption for the pirates to have feasibly captured her, and for the Federation to switch gears from their now-useless PED technology to Project Golem. (Meanwhile, I hold the headcanon that the Pirates are quite vast and decentralized compared to what the games claim/imply, thus the Urtraghan Phazon Cult was not representative of the entirety of the Pirates, and the Doomseye crew were a completely different branch who had been setting up seperately from the Urtraghans during the same time period, and were unaffected by their fall.) For rounding purposes, let's say that's four months, putting us at 4 Years, 4 Months.
Federation Force to Samus Returns - This space is the big unknown variable, especially given this is most likely where Prime 4 will fall, and we don't yet know whether it will ultimately be a one-off or start a brand new trilogy or what. But for now, assuming only Prime 4 goes in this space, I'll give it something like a round two years, with P4 happening closer to the back end of that, to lead fairly directly into Samus Returns with only a few months between them, with whatever incident occurs there finally spurring the Federation to order the Metroid extermination. But if they do wedge in even more games after Prime 4, I would stretch this section out to three or more years. But for now, 6 Years, 4 Months.
Samus Returns to Super - I detailed in another post that while I originally agreed with the general consensus that Super follows extremely closely off of SR, I have since changed my mind. Even though I have my issues with the forced inclusion of Proteus Ridley and the general tonal mishandling of Metroid II's ending, if we are to aknowledge that that event occurred, I feel like Super must make far more sense with some temporal distance between it and SR. Ergo, I posit that rather than them being a week apart at most as popular consenus goes, there must be a minimum of four months between them. Enough time for Ridley's attack to be written off as a fluke, and somewhere in that time Samus and the hatchling Metroid embarked on an adventure that convinced her it was unsafe at her side - either in too much danger, or too much of a danger to others, or both, thus prompting her to bring it to Ceres Station, kicking off the events of Super. So going with that conservative estimate of four months, that puts us at 6 Years, 8 Months.
Super to Fusion - (I am of course just not aknowledging Other M in this timeline. Fed Force is overhated IMO, but I don't have enough patience for OM.) Given that enough time must have passed between Samus Returns and Fusion for the Biologic Space Laboratories asteroid space station to have been set up around SR388 and brought into operation for the habitats to be filled, but the X parasite propogation on said planet only reached the station shortly before Fusion begins, I would guess about a year or so passed, with the bulk of that time being spent simply building the station before operations proper began only a month or two out from Fusion's opening. But that's relative to Samus Returns; relative to Super I would estimate that gap to be somewhere around eight months, bringing our total up to 7 Years, 4 Months.
Fusion to Dread - This is another kind of weird one given how Dread just has Samus working with the Federation again, even if presumably on rockier terms than before. There must have been at least a solid couple-month stretch of initially dealing with the fallout of Fusion, then things settle back into an uneasy status quo, before the transmission comes that sets off this newest adventure. At the same time, not too much of a long stretch, given Samus still has the Federation-loaned purple Gunship and her new/old AI friend. So another eight-month stretch there puts us at 8 Years.
If I say Samus is like, 24 in Zero Mission, (given it seems she was in her early 20s when she was with the Federation, and had already been a bounty hunter of good repute for a couple years as of ZM) then that puts her at roughly 32 (or 33 or 34 if I do stretch out the period between FF and SR) in Dread, which just feels right to me. These are of course all rounded to exact numbers, I imagine the actual stretches of time to be a bit more uneven, but still amounting to this overall length.

Would love to hear your thoughts on Rhaenyra and Gender. In general but also if/how that has impacted your writing. You always have great takes :)
this is gonna be looooooong
So actually, I was thinking about this a bit when I first read your new work, Ember to Flame (which you all can and should read here!) You chose to cast Rhaenyra's character as non-binary, and I was curious how this would impact the personal characterisation—and found, maybe tellingly, or just testament to you, that it really didn't. She was quite recognisable. This isn't to say that Rhaenyra isn't a woman in canon—she is, of course, and I don't want to come off as minimising that element of her identity; I don't take it or treat it as a footnote. But canonical Rhaenyra, to speak in Judith Butler's terms, is simply not interested in much of what goes into performing her gender; and to that end is very much reliant on her station—the divine right to rule, and also her pet nuke—to free her from most of the social confines and conventions that would otherwise force her to do so.
And in some sense this can all come back around to the larger, more important question—where is the line between identity and performance, i.e., if a woman wears a suit, is that her acting or being masculine?; or is it wrong to say suits belong solely to men and masculinity and maleness in the first place? If Rhaenyra allows herself space to be sexually aggressive, pursuing Harwin and pursuing Daemon, does that make her less 'feminine'? Or should femininity as a concept expand to include that behaviour? —which I'm certainly not qualified to answer. I suppose I'm only grateful—and honestly just really excited—to be living in a time, and to be part of a generation, where these questions are actually, meaningfully, being asked.
In any case, when I approached who and what Rhaenyra would be in the modern world, in my own estimation, I imagined she'd be much freer, even moreso than in canon, to shirk the Butlerian performance of femininity where it didn't fit with who or what she, as an individual, actually was or wanted. I suppose viewed in the binary context, Rhaenyra is a naturally more 'masculine' character, if you subscribe to all that. As D'Arcy put it, she's got that 'masculine leadership and fiery decisive thing people seem to like.' She's interested in exploring the in-between and pushing the envelope and finding the edges of those rules—obviously because they confine her greatest desire, to earn her father's pride, but also because she, much like Arya, is just naturally disinterested in the activities prescribed to girls of her station; I also think that the young Rhaenyra of the first few episodes genuinely, in her heart of hearts, does not understand the difference between herself and the concept of 'her father's son,' apart from the biological obvious. Rhaenys tells her the truth and she's unwilling to believe it, I think partially because she—maybe only stubbornly—just cannot find the foundational logic. I am my father's child, I am a dragonrider, I am a Targaryen, the end.
(I am often frustrated by certain criticisms of Rhaenyra's character in this regard—'she's spoiled', people say, 'she's selfish, she's egoistic, she's headstrong.' Well, yes! She's a royal prince! I'll wait while you tell me who under the Sun would be more inclined to be egoistic or headstrong or entitled than that! She does not need to earn or deserve her power—in the world of Westeros, she is quite literally entitled to it. 'Heir to the Throne', i.e., Princess of Dragonstone—and not to belabour the point—is indeed her title!)
The difference between Rhaenyra and Alicent is much like the difference between Arya and Sansa—it's a yarn ball of stuff: the differing alignment of their genuine human interests with their gendered activities and destinies; their differing levels of resignation to the confines of their gender; and the general manner in which each, as a person, prefers to pursue their self-interest, be it balls-out and fuck-all or methodically and strategically and carefully.
You'll notice I cast her in flat shoes and tailored suits in grey ridge, primarily because I believe Rhaenyra, when in business settings and while at war, would probably prefer the physical freedom and power-performance offered by flat shoes and tailored suits. But of course this is a response to being a woman in a male-dominated profession, heading up an enterprise that has been heretofore passed father to son and run by men—so I guess reasonable people could argue in circles about it. In the modern world, the process of heir-bearing would not necessarily have to happen on her body, as D'Arcy once put it. As much as Rhaenyra, I think, canonically revered as much as resented the act of childbearing, I think she'd have equally relished in that experience of giving her wife a baby, and nurturing her through that process, the act of devotion that is Alicent giving her one. (I also hinted that it was an open question between them—you might have caught that one line, if you have the baby I'll bake you a cake—and also imagined it as being very practically influenced by the relative moments in their careers; and, of course, the obvious concern of Rhaenyra's familial medical history of fatal complications in childbirth.) But this is probably all in the weeds.
Anyway, huge topic—grand question—no idea if this was responsive. I think Rhaenyra is one of those extraordinary characters who really is who she is, you know, and I suppose like all artists I have to throw in the towel and admit I write her primarily on ethos, on vibe. But I hope you enjoyed this little musing despite it being book-length lol.

a little while ago @crackinthecup tagged me in this bookish meme, which i have been saving for a rainy day - apparently a very literally rainy day in this case. thank you friend, i do so enjoy rambling about books <3 also tagging @hong-ara, @gloriousmonsters, @fatalism-and-villainy if you guys fancy having a go at it (and anyone else who wants to, i love reading others' opinions on books too)
An estimate of how many physical books I own: um. at least 2000. mom did some inventory once all the way back in 2006, and this was the point at which she got bored of it. i have always lived in a library and even though that many books has certainly been a nuisance, i also find it difficult to imagine a living space without them
Favorite author: honestly a weirdly difficult question. i feel like while i do read a lot for the style of prose, i don't very often go on a frenzy to read everything by the same author. but of course you all know my deep and abiding love for richard brautigan and lately i've been so obsessed with mary oliver. ...picking poets for this is easier :')
continued under the cut
A popular book I’ve never read and never intend to read: it feels funny to say this because i have literally not even once encountered talk of this author on tumblr Organically - which tends to be my benchmark for popularity - but seeing as she's all over every other bookish corner of the internet: i have absolutely no desire whatsoever to read anything by colleen hoover
A popular book I thought was just meh: WHERE DO I BEGIN... i've talked about some of these before but a new(er) addition to this list is in the dream house by carmen maria machado which ONCE AGAIN i feel so bad for not being wildly into! i think it's mostly due to the fact that internet at large painted such an interesting picture of it in terms of viewing ones own life/instance of abuse through the lens of different genres/tropes, but actually reading it, each segment was so short and the stylistic exploration didn't really come through. like it wasn't a bad book by any means and certainly covered an important topic and one that people generally shy away from, just. not at all what i expected it to be.
i tend to pick books based on genre and maybe like top few lines of the summary so i can't conjure up expectations, and obviously with popular books that's somewhat unavoidable :')
Longest book I own: extremely boring answer but my dad's bought a bunch of those 1001 books/movies you need to see before you die compilation books over the years and those all hover around the 1000 page mark
Longest series I own all the books to: if we mean series in terms of consistent cast/story, then i think it's the saga of darren shan by... darren shan, which has 12 books that i absolutely devoured when i was 13. otherwise, while i don't own every single goosebumps book (by rl stine), i do have most of them. i was very obsessed when i was 11-12 - these were actually the first books i ever read in english!
Prettiest book I own: um. honestly no clue, my family has never been one to buy books for the covers or for the special edition-ness and even now i feel like i can't picture any of them in my mind lol
A book or series I wish more people knew about: green bone saga by fonda lee!!! ...though again this might be down to the metric i use to gauge popularity, but even so! it has such wonderful worldbuilding and intricate family dynamics and even though i have big big book fear, i practically devoured them
Book I’m reading now: the silence of the white city by eva garcia saenze de urturi. it's pretty good so far! i've had such a year of thrillers and mysteries, i feel
Book that’s been on my TBR list for a while but I still haven’t got around to it: ...ancillary justice by ann leckie. i've started it a couple of times, but the Stars Were Not Aligned on those days. so i wait.
Do you have any books in a language other than English: most of the books i have are in estonian, actually. there's a pretty decent amount in english (mostly due to me...), and a small handful in swedish and finnish.
And lastly, paperback, hardcover or ebook? eboooook. often when i read an ebook i find myself daydreaming of a physical book, but then when i actually read one i find myself getting so irritated by not being able to find a comfy position lol. i also really love audiobooks, for the multitasking value...

Texas Has Assaulted the Constitutional Right to Abortion | Opinion
— Jessica Mason Pieklo | Newsweek | 9/21/21
The following is a lightly edited transcript of remarks made by Jessica Mason Pieklo during a Newsweek podcast debate on Texas' new abortion law.
First of all, thank you so much for having me on and for the opportunity to talk about what is going on with the assault on abortion rights and access across the country.
So, Lila offered up a couple points that I would really love to jump into. First of all, she said that the Texas law is an important moment to protect all children at birth. And I absolutely agree that all children at birth should be protected. I would point out that abortion is not about protecting birth. We were talking about developing pregnancies here and, at six weeks old, we don't even have an embryo yet. The science is very clear about what is happening, biologically speaking. And I'm sure we're going to have plenty of time to talk about the science behind these restrictions here, and the junk science that is promoting them.
Tumblr media

Saul Loeb/AFP Via Getty Images
But Lila brought up the 14th Amendment and I'm really hoping we have an opportunity to do a deep dive into this because on the 14th Amendment, the courts have had a lot of history and time to talk about what it means to be a person, as far as the Constitution is concerned. And they look at this question a lot and they have answered it many, many times. And they have said that there is one category of events that has to happen first, before the Constitution recognizes full personhood, and that is birth. And that also aligns with a lot of faith traditions, which I'm hoping we get the opportunity to talk about today as well, because a lot of faith traditions recognize personhood—the act of becoming a full human being—at the moment of birth. So that is also very important, as we are talking about public perceptions around abortion and the current debate.
Lila also mentioned something really important, which is, the moments of when life begins and conception, because what we have at the Supreme Court is a case in Dobbs vs. Jackson Women's Health that attempts to ban abortion at 15 weeks—and that's before pregnancy is deemed viable. That's an important constitutional marker, but that's not the marker that Ms. Rose brought up here—she brought up a very different marker, which is life at conception. And so already, there is goalpost-moving that's happening here. And so I think that's important. I really am looking forward to a robust debate around these issues, because I think that the public does deserves and is entitled to it. But I also want to be very clear what we're talking about here.

Texas Has Taken a Big Step To Protect Innocent Human Life | Opinion
— Lila Rose | 9/21/21 | Newsweek
The following is a lightly edited transcript of remarks made by Lila Rose during a Newsweek podcast debate on Texas' new abortion law.
Texas' law is a big step in the right direction toward protecting human rights. There's no reason that we should treat children at the moment of birth different than children before birth. They are still human beings. Human life starts—the science is clear when human life begins—it begins at the moment of fertilization: sperm, egg fusion. You have a unique, individual human being and they deserve legal protection, just like anybody else. That's not just a general argument for human rights; it's based on our own Constitution. The 14th Amendment says that all people should have equal protection under the law and that no state should deprive anyone of their right to life without due process.
Tumblr media
The Texas State Capitol is seen on the first day of the 87th Legislature's third special session on September 20, 2021 in Austin, Texas. Tamir Kalifa/Getty Images
So we need due process for these preborn children. They're innocent. They deserve life, and abortion is not advancing women: It's actually another act of violence against not just that child, but that woman. So we applaud Texas for banning abortion after six weeks, when the heartbeat can be detected. Ultimately, all humans deserve legal protection, even before six weeks, from the very beginning. But this is a step in the right direction. And because of Texas' law, it's estimated that over 100 children are living to see another day, as the daily Texas abortion rate is between 100 and 150 children killed daily. So that is a tremendous victory, which we applaud.
I'm certainly going to address abortion as a private medical decision, but I think you have to address it in the context of not just a woman's right to privacy, which I fully agree with. As a woman, I believe in my own bodily autonomy—I think these are very important values. But when your privacy involves another human life and another human being—in this case, with pregnancy, a preborn child—it's not just what you do with your body in the privacy of your own home. It's also about the life of another individual. And I think that's what Roe v. Wade got terribly wrong. I think it was a lack of acknowledging the science, which is crystal clear about when human life begins. Even a former Supreme Court clerk for Justice Harry Blackmun, who penned the majority decision in Roe v. Wade, said that this was a poorly decided case. It doesn't hold, and that's because the way that it was decided completely ignored the humanity of this other individual, the child.
— Lila Rose is the founder and president of Live Action, a leading nonprofit human rights organization reaching millions of people each day with education on abortion and human dignity. The views expressed in this article are the writer's own.

On average, a kitchen remodel costs $25,278 or $150 per square foot.
Most homeowners spend between $13,273 and $37,520 or $75 to $250 per square foot.
The total expense varies depending on the size of the space, the quality of materials, and whether you change the layout of the room.
The national average to remodel a small bathroom is typically $6,500, but it can range anywhere from $1,500 up to $15,000 or more.
For a complete remodel, you will likely pay $70 per square foot for low-end fixtures with DIY labor, and up to $250 per square foot for high-end fixtures installed by a licensed contractor.
The fact that everything doesn't 'match' means freestanding kitchens are often a more affordable option than fitted kitchens.
