Hola de Barcelona!

I think this is the third time I have been tagged to reveal my music… but I will do it a bit differently.

What is music? Emotions, memories, fantasies or simply the urge to get low and shake it like a polaroid picture. Therefore I will post the ten songs/artists I listened the most during the last weeks and how they made me feel.

1. Karliene - Atlantis, because it lets me feel the weightlessness of diving and shudder before the deep dark beautiful mystery we call ocean

2. Every song from Blackmore’s Night, can’t believe I only discovered them now. Each songs tells a different little story about love, adventure and magic in medieval worlds full of kings, dragons, fortune tellers, knights and roses.

3. Visions of Atlantis - Master the hurricane, because with pirate metal every little thing you do (ride a bike, do dishes, work, sleep) feels epic and dangerous and brave!

4. Walk the moon - Shut up and dance, because this song always makes me smile and dance around. Looks especially funny at work.

5. Faun and Eluveitie - Gwydion, this song simply reminds me a lot of Fanelia. It starts with crystal clear mystical singing about the magic of the forests and ends in a powerful battle cry which makes me see strong heroes swinging swords ⚔️

6. Delain - Queen of Shadow, I always liked that band. It has slightly cheesy lyrics but reminds me of my Goth Phase as a teen… which never really ended 🤔 except for the massiv overuse of black eyeliner.

7. Katy Perry - E.T but the version without the stupid male rap part, who needs that anyway? A song for the romantic Science Fiction heart! And a bit dirty too! Hehe 😉

8. ASP - De profundis, a creepy masterpiece which reminds me of sirens luring sailors into their watery grave or even more sinister dark things.

9. Every song from Beast in Black, because I can go jogging to their beat and it feels like a fun, colourful and heroic battle in the One Piece universe! Go Luffy!

10. Battle Beast - Eden, idk it’s just such a feel good power metal song which makes me imagine flying on wings I created myself ☺️

Not included are Nightwish, In Flames, Metallica, the Carmina Burana, Heaven shall burn, Two steps from hell, Volbeat and the Escaflowne OST.

Queer pop fans reveal their top 10 songs of 2024 so far

The team at Popchops has revealed which songs queer listeners are loving at the halfway point of 2024. 

For the more fiscally minded, the start of July will mean sorting out their tax returns. 

However, for the more poptastic among us, it’s time to get very different paperwork in order: our favourite tracks of the year so far. 

Music lovers in the LGBTQIA+ community need more than one end-of-year Spotify Wrapped, they need pop queens ranked, and they need it now. 

Lucky for us, the team at Popchops has been able to collate the most listened to songs from queer pop lovers so far. 

Popchops is a DJ team that puts on parties across Australia with a very lively online community of almost 2,000 members. 

This group is predominantly queer and each month Popchops’ own Brad Elias put together a monthly chart of their most loved tracks.

He explains that he started to chart to better represent what the community was listening to. 

“I feel like the ARIA charts don’t accurately reflect the engaged pop music community who often do appreciate our Australian artists or the celebrated artists of pop music like Charli XCX, Kylie and Carly Rae Jepsen who no longer feel the same amount of love with the rise of Spotify,” he said. 

The Top 10

To mark the halfway point of 2024, Brad collated the list of the top 10 most loved tracks by members of Popchops exclusively for QNews. 

10. Taylor Swift ft Post Malone – Fortnight

Despite dominating the world with her Eras tour and the charts with her new album, Taylor didn’t quite have the same impact with Popchops listeners.

The song did go no.1 in Australia and the inclusion of Post Malone ensures there’s a token male artist in the list. 

9. Charli XCX – 360

It’s quite telling that a song that only reached no.66 on the ARIA charts is so high among listeners of Popchops.

Quite clearly, her queer fans will support her as much as she supports them. 

8. Beyonce – Texas Hold ‘Em

If you’ve opened Instagram at any point in 2024 you no doubt heard this song. Beyonce went country with this lead single and reached no.2 in Australia.

7. Dua Lipa – Illusion

Although it still charted well at no.21 in Australia, this is more notable for the music video.

Filmed at a famous Barcelona pool, it was the same location as Kylie’s clip for Slow and certainly took some inspiration from our pop princess. 

6. Charli XCX – Von Dutch

There are a few things certain in life: death, taxes, and “the gays” loving Charli XCX.The longtime ally has always acknowledged this love, famously saying “Generally, the queer community just has, like, better taste.”

The song reached no.15 on the Australian Dance Chart.

5. Sabrina Carpenter – Espresso

One of the biggest songs of the year was always going to appear on this list.

The track has been a global hit and reached no.1 in many countries including Australia. 

4. Ariana Grande – we can’t be friends (wait for your love)

The second single from her album Eternal Sunshine was another commercial success.

Reaching no.2 in Australia, the song will remind many of Robyn’s Call Your Girlfriend and Dancing on My Own. 

3. Dua Lipa – Houdini

Despite being released at the end of 2023, Popchops listeners are still listening to this in droves more than six months later.

It was a worldwide hit and reached no.7 on the ARIA charts. 

2. Dua Lipa – Training Season

The British singer’s second single from her album Radical Optimism is a move away from her previous disco sound.

With ABBA influences, it reached no.12 on the Aussie charts.

1. Ariana Grande – yes, and?

The lead single from Ariana’s seventh album is the most popular song of the year so far with Popchops listeners.

The Max Martin-produced track has been likened to Madonna’s groundbreaking track Vogue. It reached no.2 on Australia’s ARIA charts. 

Who just missed out?

The highest Australian on the list was Delta Goodrem who just missed the cut in 11th place. with Hearts on the Run. 

Queer artist and rising star Chappell Roan finished 13th with Good Luck, Babe! 

While our very own artists Sia and Kylie Minogue came in at no.18 with their single Dance Alone.

Nickname? Leebear. The soccer team needed to come up with a nickname to differentiate me from another player with the last name “Lee.” Somehow they came up with “Leebear,” which didn’t really help the issue, but still stuck, the way nicknames tend to do.

Starsign? Aries, Aquarius moon, Scorpio rising

Height? 5′3″

Last film I saw: Last film I saw in theaters was The Hate U Give. I saw it with a full theater and cried a lot.

Favourite musician? Right now, I’d have Janelle Monáe, Dua Lipa, Carly Rae Jepsen, Noname, H.E.R., and Lianne La Havas on my main list.

Song stuck in my head: I’ve had this super weird song, “Ghost Story” by Charming Disaster, about a couple that reconnects after the husband’s death, stuck in my head. It’s the Weather of Welcome to Night Vale episode 50 (I’m super behind but listening to podcasts again to and from work in the cold weather).

Do I get asks? Not nearly enough! I love when people ask me questions and would love people to do it more!

What am I wearing? Leggings with hidden pockets (woot), black t-shirt, librarian-esque grey cardigan, silver big earrings, a turquoise and silver ring, black flats. Very on brand.

Dream job? Novelist and book reviewer—I’m on my way. I guess since that’s a “realistic” dream I’m actively striving for, I’ll say my dream job would be spending six months of the year traveling the world and having someone pay me for it, and the other six months writing novels.

Dream trip? My dream trip is in the works—Barcelona, Madrid, and the south of Spain—so I’ll look ahead instead to my perhaps-impossible dream trip, which is visiting Russia, then taking the TransSiberian through Mongolia and under the Great Wall to Beijing.

Describe yourself as aesthetic things (taken from another tag—I loved the question): Thunder drumming outside with rain pounding on the window; magnolia trees; the sound of waves hitting the beach; the feeling of cool grass beneath your toes; red lipstick; gold jewelry; warm scarves and flowing dresses; the crinkly sound that paper makes when it’s been filled with writing with ballpoint pen.

Play any instruments? I don’t, and not for lack of trying. If in chorus someone played a starting note, I could use the distance between notes to understand what leaps my voice had to make. Instruments were harder though—I had to make the connection from the notes to their relationships and then to my hands, which was less intuitive. In 8th, my teacher tried to get me to play baritone, which was disastrous, as I could only just manageably play the flute, and as it separated me from my friends. When I told him I wanted to switch back, he disagreed, and I was already going to be doing too much in high school, so I quit to focus on the things I actually loved and was good at, chorus and soccer.

Languages? Only English right now. I don’t have much of a talent for language, although I wish I did, or that I had more time to dedicate to it. But I am quite proficient reading in Spanish, and know enough speaking to get by in a Spanish-speaking country. I’ve also dabbled in German and Hindi, but only retained a little of either.

Favorite food: Fresh sweet peas, anything peppermint chocolate, spinach goat cheese pizza, good szechuan string beans, chicken with mole, garlic shrimp.

Favorite songs? A lot of my favorites are ones that bring me joy, cheer me up on bad days. “Gimmie Love” and “Cut to the Feeling” by Carly Rae Jepsen are up there. I have a new favorite Janelle Monáe song every week, but it’s usually “Make Me Feel.” Lianne La Havas’s “What You Don’t Do” and “Green and Gold,” “LSD” by Jamila Woods feat. Chance the Rapper, “Whipped Cream” by Ari Lennox, and “Balam Pichkari” from Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani are also current contenders.

Random Fact: I’m a season ticket holder for the Chicago Red Stars, my local women’s soccer team, and was at the 2015 Women’s World Cup final in Vancouver, where Carli Lloyd scored a hat trick and the US won against Japan 5–2.

1.  What is the last dream you remember? (describe)

The last dream I remember is when I volunteer in a hospital, and during a soccer game for children (for charity), there was Chris (Evans) near me. We didn’t talk, I don’t speak his own language, but I felt... relaxed, as if he kept me safe. I don’t know, it's strange, but beautiful.

2.  What is something that you fear will happen to you in the future? (Also Why)

I am afraid that I will remain alone. I already feel lonely, but I am convinced that in my future, I will feel even worse. And even if everyone thinks that I don’t care about loneliness, I actually hate it. I hate being alone, and I hate the fact that I will always feel like that.

3. Describe the best day that you can remember.

April 20, 2015. I left for a school trip to Barcelona a few days earlier, and that day we visited the Dali museum in Figueres. It was a breathtaking experience; Dalì is one of my favorite artists, and watching his works... One of the best days of my life.

4.  Describe your worst day.

It was a day like many others; in the morning I went to school, then I came home, I had lunch, and I immediately did my homework for the next day. That evening I would go to sleep with a friend of mine. Already as soon as I woke up I felt... strange, as if I felt something bad was happening. I was at my friend's house, it was very late; we had put ourselves to bed, and at the beginning I had dozed off. Then something awakened me; I felt as if my body had weighed down, the lungs could not store air, and I could not breathe. I could not understand what was happening to me, and I was afraid. I began to cry, but I remained motionless, and in silence, in my bed. I was embarrassed to wake up my friend. "It will pass immediately", I thought. But the feeling did not pass, and I felt worse and worse.After a while, I couldn’t stand still there, I had to get up, I needed to get out and breathe as much air as possible. I decided to wake up my friend, to tell her what was happening to me, and she immediately helped me out on the terrace. I remember she scolded me, because I hadn’t warned her before. After a while, she decided to call my mom; fortunately, my house is not far from my friend's, and so, after five minutes, my mother knocked at the door.I remember that my mother didn’t even have time to enter the house, that I jumped on her, and I began to cry, as I had never done in my life. She tried to calm me down, but it took me a long time to do it.That night was the first time I had a panic attack, and it was the worst day (and night) of my life. Sometimes I still have panic attacks, and the thing that makes me madder is that I don’t know why; but slowly, I learned how to calm down, and how to pass that feeling.But that day... I will never forget it.

6.  Do you believe in love at first sight?

Honestly, no. But I must also admit that I have never had a relationship before, and I have never experienced such a thing. But if one day I knew someone who would make me feel like I had a 'love at first sight’... then yes, I would begin to believe it too.

8. Do you have a good relationship with your parents?

I believe the relationship I have with my parents is exactly as it should be. I love my parents - even if I don’t tell them very often - and I would do anything for them. Sometimes we fight, sometimes we do not agree on something. But then, there are those times when they and I understand each other instantly, without even needing to say a word. And that's when I think 'after all, I love my parents, and nothing could make me change my mind'.

23.  If you are struggling with something right now, what is it?

Myself. Yes, sometimes I quarrel with me. I make some crap, and then I say to myself 'what the hell do you do? You're really stupid!’I'm starting to think I'm crazy, that it's not normal to talk to myself, but there are people worse than me in the world, so it's okay.

54.  What would you do if you were going to die in three hours?

There are so many things I would like to do in my life, and would you like to do it in just three hours? lolAnyway, I don’t know. If it were possible, I would like to meet some people I have always wanted to meet (pity that they are almost all dead lol). Or I would like to visit some places, like the Uffizi Gallery (in Florence); I would like to see some works that I adore.Or, I would simply go to the nearest beach, and go into the water, blissfully waiting for death. I hope to die in the evening, so I could see the sunset one last time. I love the sunset.

76. What is the most immature thing that you do?

I think... run away from home. More or less; I had a fight with my parents, and I was so angry that without thinking seriously about what I was doing, I go out the house, and I left. I walked for a while, but then I realized that I was wrong. Escape is useless. So I went home, and talked to my parents, making peace with them.

101. What did you think was cool when you were younger?

To become an adult! But then I realized that being a child was not so bad.

103.  Do you think you are a good person?  Why or why not?

There are no good people, or bad people. I believe that people decide what they want to be; I have decided not to do bad things, to be good, but sometimes I quarrel with my parents, sometimes I say bad words, and sometimes I tease my brother or my sister. Does this make me a bad person?

Being a victim of bullying. I don’t know what it means to be in prison, but I've seen a lot of TV series, and documentaries that tell about this 'lifestyle'. Many people are beaten, threatened, raped in prisons, and as these people are imprisoned for doing something bad, they don’t deserve it.

Who are your role models? “i have a lot of role models... but if i had to name a few, my biggest role models are my brother, electra sunbaenims, and halcyon’s minjun sunbaenim!”

Do you have any nicknames? If so, what do your friends or family call you? “i don’t have a lot of nicknames but i’m often called minnie by my close peers and seniors! i’m also sometimes called min, but that’s rarely the case as everyone likes to reference my name with the disney character [ minnie mouse ] instead.”

What are your favorite foods? What would you recommend to fans? “i love all types of food though i love desserts the most! my favorite desserts to eat are tiramisu and fresh berry cream cake! i definitely recommend those desserts to try.”

What are some places that you would like to go but haven’t been to yet? “i’ve never been outside of korea yet, so i would really love to travel anywhere and everywhere! if i can name the top three cities i would love to visit most, they would be barcelona, tokyo, and honolulu!”

What would you say to a fan who is struggling? “it must be hard right now. i can’t even imagine what you must be going through but i do know that you are strong and able to overcome any hardship as long as you can believe in yourself. after all, you’ve made it this far along, right? keep pushing on and one day, it’ll all pay off for you. i promise. and until that day comes and even after, i’ll always support you.”

Are there any languages you speak besides your native tongue? What other languages would you like to learn? “so far, i’m only fluent in korean but i know english well enough to hold a short conversation even if my accent gets in the way sometimes. i’m still learning english though along with basic japanese.”

What are your three favorite songs at the moment? “that’s such a hard question... well, lately, i’ve been listening to a variety of music... but i especially love music that i can build choreography for! so the three songs that have been on my mind lately because of that are ‘there for ya’ by lil cats featuring ovococo, ‘talking to myself’ by gallant, and ‘new rules’ by dua lipa!”

Did you always know you wanted to be famous as a child? Was your family supportive? “i don’t think i really considered wanting to be famous when i was younger until i was scouted by hjh. however, the idea of becoming famous didn’t really hit me until a few years ago when the company began releasing our names to the public. now that some people can recognize me on the streets, it’s becoming a little of a culture shock. and although they were hesitant on allowing me become an idol trainee, i really couldn’t have made it as long as i did without my family’s support so i’m grateful that i have it.”

Why did you decide to become a trainee? “i think a lot of it has to do with my brother’s influence. even though i was really shy as a kid, he always encouraged me whenever i played the piano for him, danced, or even sang a song. when he found out that i was scouted by hjh, even though he thought i was too young to pursue training, he assured me that if i really wanted to do it, he would support me in my efforts. i think that’s what really encouraged me to go through with it in the end.”

Where do you see yourself in 10 years from now? “ten years is a long time from now, but hopefully i would still be involved with the industry somehow whether it be in music or in acting. of courser, my biggest goal right now is to debut first!”

What is something no one knows about you? "even though it probably doesn’t look like it, aside from music courses, my best subject in school was social studies!”

Describe your family. Who are the members in your family? “my family is small but supportive. my father is someone who’s quiet but dependable while my mother is very kind and warm-hearted. my brother is someone who is very independent and strong while my dog kero keeps me company when i need it the most.”

How was your childhood? What was it like? “i don’t really remember my childhood too well aside from my memories with my current family, but for the most part, i like to think i had a very loving childhood!”

If you weren’t pursuing the path to fame, where do you think you would be? “i think i would still be a college student for the most part, but probably with a focus on sports or something relating to social studies? though honestly, it’s really difficult for myself to imagine me doing anything else but music now.”
