Azalin Reviews Darklord Adam

Domain: Lamordia Formation: 575 BC (the actual date various in different sources, but I was there to witness its formation, so take this date to be the most accurate) Power Level: 💀💀💀⚫⚫ Sources: Ravenloft Gazetteer Vol 2 (3e); Domains of Dread (2e); I, Strahd the War Against Azalin (Novel).

Based on rumors, Lamordia went through significant changes in its latest rendition, but this week I shall review it as it once was and tell the tale of Darklord Adam and the constant harsh weather that plagues “his” domain. The settlements of this land are constantly assaulted by deadly blizzards and frigid air coming from the Sea of Sorrows in the winter and infestation of insects and insufferable heat in the summer. I do not recommend visiting, especially given how adverse the entire populace is to magic. I am positive my late father would thoroughly enjoy it, however.

Everything about Lamordia is based upon structure and scientific reasoning set within a utilitarian society. The people have a scientific explanation for everything despite the obvious supernatural phenomena that occurs all around them. They are adverse to any type of magic - whether it be the far more superior arcane arts or the divine. This disbelief is so tightly held that the land itself is known to suppress those that attempt any form of casting. Though, I have it on first hand accounts that this effect does not always occur.

It is highly dangerous for those who deny the existence in the arcane to essentially practice it. I’m surprised Lamorida hasn’t imploded in on itself yet, for Dr. Victor Mordenheim’s science clearly surpasses the realm of the supernatural. Given the nature of the domain, you would think Mordenheim would be its Darklord, but he is not. His creation, a flesh golem of rare independence, is the true Darklord of Lamordia.

Let’s dive in a bit to the tale of these two idiots. When Mordenheim and his wife, Elise, were unable to conceive a child, he devoted himself to the study of life and death; above all, other ways in which life could be created. I can...understand that inclination. It is important one has an heir to carry out one's legacy and rule. Of course, he went about it like a blind fool with no sense of the magics he was tapping into for he denied their very existence.

Adam was the result of 13 years of labor which he spent away from Elise. Moredenheim created Adam to appear as a perfect physical specimen. And upon first blush, I suppose one could say that is true. He is muscular yet lean with long black hair and I am told that sort of thing is appealing to some. However, close up he is a mockery of beauty like a horrible painting gifted to a King by a so-called artist.

Made up of pulsating arteries and tendons seen just beneath the thin bits of grey flesh, Adam is disgusted by his own appearance. Interestingly, when my little scholar interviewed Adam he told her that Mordenheim made him but another source provided him with his “soul”. So, it seems that Mordenheim’s science only brought him so far and it was likely the powers he denied that truly brought life into Adam.

Elise was unsettled by Adam’s appearance and despite her discomfort her husband decided to adopt a girl to act as a playmate for Adam. That seems like a very bad parenting decision and coming from me...well, that says something, doesn’t it?

Adam became obsessed with Elise and wanted nothing more than her acceptance and approval. Accounts of what transpired on the night Lamordia appeared on the border of Barovia differs between Adam and his maker. They both blame the other, but in the end whether Adam was a murderous villain or a victim attempting to gain acceptance, his adopted sister fell to her death after an encounter with him and Elise was mutilated.

Death would have been kinder for Elise, but Mordenheim keeps her alive through “scientific” means. Her heart beats through the working of machinery alone and he constantly switches her limbs and skin out in attempts to receive her, but only accomplishes keeping her in constant pain. If the foolish man believed in Divine or even the Arcane and not dismissed those practitioners of both, he could have healed her condition. I myself have been known to use such magics to prolong my own life when I was a mortal man.

Mordenheim’s monstrous creations roam Lamordia, but despite the obvious arcane nature of these creations, the people and the Doctor himself still dismiss the arcane. They will not accept it, just as they will not accept Adam. And this is the curse the Dark Powers bestowed upon Adam, to never find the acceptance he so hopelessly craves. To live alone on an island, over-dramatically named “The Isle of Agony” as he plots against his creator. When my little scholar interviewed Adam he said that Lamordia was Mordenheim’s even though it shouldn’t be and that they were “all his children”.

Adam is tied to Mordenheim and devotes his existence to making the Doctor’s life as miserable as possible, like the overgrown rebellious teenager that he is. Though, this is quite easy seeing as the Dark Powers bond the two together so that Adam experiences Mordenheim’s physical pain and the doctor experiences his creation’s angsty teenage ways.

As flesh golems go, Adam is one of a kind with many immunities to mundane weapons and certain magical energies. Still, without any arcane mastery of his own, a skilled wizard could make quick work of him. Though his curse is interesting, it makes his tie and rule over his own realm obsolete. As such, I will give Adam 3 skulls for this review and Mordenheim does not even get a skull. I despise those that practice the art without respecting it and those who do so without realizing it? Utter fools.

Conversion Corner: Various Random Races part 5

Yautja (Predator franchise)

 Today we’re ending off this special with one more Starfinder race, this time focusing on the titular species of a well-known alien monster film franchise. Yes, it’s time to talk about the Yautja from Predator!

Never referred to as such in the films, the word “yautja” is only used in the expanded universe associated with this franchise. For those unfamiliar, these are the titular “Predators” that give the series its name, a race of highly advanced technologically, but seemingly primitive socially, warriors that view the art of the hunt as the single greatest joy in their lives. As such, their coming of age ceremonies and other general pastimes include setting down on a world and hunting the dangerous species in the biome of their choosing. Unfortunately for sapient species, they are included in that categorization thanks to their tool and weapon use, as well as general tenacity and craftiness.

Yautja are large and physically-imposing humanoids, averaging 7 feet tall, and have smooth mottled skin that ranges from dark green to light browns and yellows. Their heads feature broad scaly foreheads surrounded by hairlike tendrils, and their mouths are surrounded by a quartet of insect-like manibles that appear to be used for display purposes and conveying emotions. Canon conflicts on whether female members of the species have any dimorphism with the males, so I’ve elected to go for little to no dimorphism as a standard, but exceptions may exist as different clans might engage in genetic modification.

They also possess eyes adapted not to the visible light spectrum as humans understand it, but the infrared range. In other words, they see heat, useful for environments where conventional camouflage would hide prey.

Meanwhile, their musculature goes beyond that of a human, allowing them to perform great feats even without their technology.

The hunt is everything to the Yautja, and though their people do have scientists and innovators, the traditions of the rite of passage and of the hunt remain the same, so much so that despite their advanced technology, the most they tend to use against prey is their active camouflage, shoulder-mounted plasma casters, and the occasional self-propelled discus. They otherwise favor more traditional hunting tools such as wristblades, spears, and the occasional netgun. In fact, against a particularly impressive target, they might eschew all of these for hand to hand combat for the thrill of it.

While the hunters typically only view other species in terms of their viability as prey that can give a worthy challenge, yautja can come to respect sapients that prove their mettle, graciously accepting the loss of one of their own when other races fight back and win, or even bestowing gifts and marks of honor upon those that prove themselves against dangerous prey like Xenomorphs.

In the modern starfaring age of Starfinder, however, the way of the hunter is currently at risk, with most starfaring races having equally advanced weaponry and the ability to respond to hunts, making such hunts against sufficiently advanced prey a risky business. As such, the yautja often have to temper their bloodlust in order to treat peacefully with other races, and find their hunts in dangerous native wildlife.

An exception to this is during wartime, and while yautja rarely go to open war themselves, they can sometimes hire themselves out as guerilla fighters to other armies, preying upon their enemies and sowing fear.

The yautja are a curious mix of both primitive and advanced, and it’s very interesting to think of how they would adapt to a universe of equally advanced species.

Size and Type: Yautja are medium humanoids of the yautja subtype.

Racial Traits:

Incredible Physique: Yautja gain a +2 bonus to Atheletics and Acrobatics. Additionally, when using Athletics to jump, the DC does not increase from not making a running start.

Hunter Training: Yautja gain a +2 bonus to Survival and Stealth checks.

Vocal Mimicry: Yautja have a knack for mimicking voices and picking up on useful phrases to influence the behavior of others. By spending 1 hour observing a group of creatures, they can then make Bluff checks to mimic phrases to influence the behavior of one of those creatures as long as the target is not aware of the yautja’s presence. Even if the Bluff check fails, the target does not realize the false nature of the spoken words, merely getting their attention unless the yautja fails by 5 or more. Mimicking voices to fool other groups, or voices the target knows to be dead may have varying and limited results.

Yautja Senses: Yautja cannot see visible light naturally. Instead, they see like a thermal imager. This effectively gives them darkvision out to 180 ft. , but even in dim or greater lighting the nuances of color are lost on them. They also gain a +2 bonus to Perception to spot objects with a significant difference in temperature from the ambient environment, including most living creatures. Without filtering optics, environments with a temperature of very hot or hotter impose a -2 penalty to Perception checks due to excess ambient heat.

 Predators are an absolutely iconic alien race, and I’m really glad I picked them for the final converted race of the week! If I went further, I’d try statting up various versions of classic yautja tech!

Providing for Pollinators - my Syracuse Wildlife Garden

Hi everyone! Maybe you know me, I am a grad student with a B.S. in Wildlife & Conservation Biology and I study native bees. I am in New York for grad school and my landlady (I live in her personal home with one other PhD student) has agreed to let me turn part of her yard into pollinator habitat. I discussed this prospect a month ago here. On Memorial Day I got to work and finally planted everything!

I thought I would use this opportunity to share my ongoing experience and educate others about the importance and the feasibility of creating pollinator and wildlife habitat in your yard. Please, consider doing even just a little bit to help the natural world this year or in the future. Hopefully the information and resources I provide will be of use.

I will update this post throughout the season as the plants grow and bloom!

This first installment lays out the principles of habitat gardening and thus is pretty lengthy. Part 2 will talk about the plants I chose and include photos of the newly planted garden!

Wildlife habitat in the urban and suburban sphere is crucial going forward in the fight to save our planet from going belly-up. We think of ‘big ag’ as the enemies, and while that’s true, habitat destruction and fragmentation due to development has had just as large an impact, and we are all accountable. Pristine, untouched lawns, silent without birdsong or the buzzing of bees, has somehow become the ideal and a symbol of status and accomplishment (yet another way that western mindset of ‘man vs nature’ rears its ugly head). Few realize the harm that has done, and we’re at the tipping point now. But while we can’t overthrow Monsanto overnight, we can control our own little patch of earth. Reconnect the land, that’s the goal. You’ll find yourself reconnected to it too, in the process. And once you see the amount of thriving life you can support, you’ll never go back to that old turfgrass prison. Creating habitat is its own source of pride, especially knowing you will influence and inspire others to do the same. 

There are infinite ways one could construct habitat on their property. It will obviously depend on time, money, desired use of yard (do you have kids? or barbecues? leave some grass), town ordinances, etc. I could have easily ripped up every ounce of turfgrass in the yard, but it’s best to start simple, especially when it’s someone else’s land! I have about a quarter acre to work with - which doesn’t seem like a lot until you realize just how many plants you could fit in there! More so, a quarter acre of habitat where there wasn’t any before sure makes a difference to the wildlife, especially bees, who often nest only a few meters from their host plants and will only travel as far as they need to for food.

Here’s an overview of the ‘before’:

Basically, what we’ve got is a lot of turfgrass and some exotic ornamentals, with a few native trees scattered about at the boundary between the neighbor’s house. Existing plants were hydrangeas, hostas, hellebores, and vinca. I didn’t even know what vinca was (I am rather out of the loop with ornamental plants) so I looked it up, as it seemed very aggressive and had formed a dense mat over much of the ground along the borders of the property. Lo and behold, it is considered invasive in many places, yet it’s sold at pretty much every nursery. It has purple flowers that attract virtually no pollinators, and my landlady loves the darn thing so much she wants it to spread to cover the entire yard if possible. I’ve tried to steer her away from that... a big problem though, was that she did not have any idea what plants were in her yard. Apparently the landscapers did not tell her what they were planting, nor did she seek out the information herself, so I identified them all for her. Maybe it’s just me, but I could never rest not knowing what plants someone put into my ground that I’d have to live with for the next few decades. There’s a huge border of stones at the front of the house, apparently to stop flooding. Let it just be known that stones are pretty dang bad for wildlife habitat, as they do nothing but cover the ground and prevent things from growing. She wanted more stones, I steered her away from that also.

Principles of Habitat Gardening

Insects are good. Insects are what you want. Insects form the foundation of the food web for whatever animals you want to support. This means changing your mindset to see leaf damage as beneficial, something that traditional gardening has drilled into our heads as wrong and ugly. Songbirds rely on caterpillars to raise chicks, and pollinators help plants create fruit, seeds, and nuts, which countless animals rely on. Predatory insects like wasps, mantids, and many true bugs keep populations in check so no plants are ever eaten to fatal levels. 

NATIVE PLANTS. How do you attract insects? You plant the things they eat, and that certainly isn’t ornamentals from Eurasia. Insects have long co-evolutionary relationships with specific plants, attuning their tolerance to certain plant defensive compounds. Most butterfly and moth caterpillars eat only a small range of plants, and over half of our bees in North America collect pollen from only one group of plants. These are specialists, and they form a crucial part of biodiversity that’s often left out when habitat is lost and urban sprawl leaves ornamental plants that only a few hardy troopers (the generalists) will tolerate. Native plants are not ~in~ when it comes to gardening though, and it is difficult to find them being sold unless you know where your local native nurseries are. Demanding these plants has slowly begun to change the market, and now some can be found as seeds in places like Home Depot or Lowe’s. Recent studies have shown that songbird nests can fail in suburban areas with a lack of native plants, due to low abundances of insects. If you want birds, once again, provide insects! 

Native plants are easier to grow and care for than exotics, because they are adapted to your region, its seasons and climate and precipitation. That’s less manicuring, fertilizing, and pesticide-spraying on your part.

Remember what all animals need - food/water, shelter, and a place to raise young. Providing only one of these things doesn’t do a whole lot of good, as they may stay for a little while but not forever, and you’re not actually creating habitat.

Coarse woody debris - aka logs, stumps, snags, and brush piles - are very useful to wildlife, as sources of food (they host many insects), shelter, and nesting sites (a LOT of birds nest in tree holes and excavated cavities, as well as mammals). Leaving these ‘eyesores’ is doing a lot of good, as well as not raking your leaves (or at least keeping them in a pile) and allowing dead perennial stems to persist through the winter and spring. Bees will be nesting and hibernating inside them!! See? Less work for you, with a hefty payoff.

Diversify as much as you can, in every way you can. Bloom color, bloom time, plant family, leaf texture, growth habit. It will maximize the species you can host in one space. 

The goal of creating habitat in your yard is bigger than just inviting pollinators and birds. It’s restoring connectivity to the landscape. Fragmentation of habitat has massive negative effects on wildlife, from mammals and amphibians who need to cross highways and go through yards to get to the next woodlot to the ‘edge effects’ of habitat islands surrounded by parking lots, loud noise, and urban predators. The more people create habitat, the more we ‘plug’ our land back into the larger landscape and help support wildlife at a much bigger scale.

Research, research, research! You need to find what plants are right for your state and region, your soil type and sun levels, and many other specifics only you know. Luckily, there’s plenty of information and books out there to help you (I will recommend some further down).

YOU CAN DO SOMETHING, NO MATTER HOW SMALL. You could own one acre or ten, or maybe just a windowsill or patio garden. Put out a bee hotel. Keep natives in pots (that’s what I do at home). Spread the word (that’s a biggie). You are always able to help.

So, for my situation, we have silty loam soil (you can find yours here), mostly full sun with areas of part-sun and shade. A big problem I had to plan around was the deer, who come through the neighborhood regularly and try to eat the hostas and hydrangeas. Many ornamentals are marketed as ‘deer-resistant’ but a lot of native plants are as well. It has to do mainly with leaf chemistry and texture which equates to some level of palatability. Of course, if they’re very hungry, deer will even eat pine needles. My landlady tasked me with creating habitat that was low maintenance. She is older in age and does not have the time or means to be manicuring everything. Apart from the deer resistance, my landlady also wanted a new groundcover that would thrive in full sun unlike the vinca, because her goal is less lawn to mow. I have a vendetta against the vinca now so I’ve vowed to do all I can do diversify the groundcover. There are many butterflies and moths that rely on various weedy or groundcover plants as caterpillar food (especially violets!). With these criteria, I set out to find a list of plants native to New York available near me for sale that would create a wonderfully diverse wildlife and pollinator garden. 

Luckily, central New York has ample resources for this purpose. I utilized the Habitat Gardening in Central New York network heavily, as they have an annual complete buying guide for all native plants in the region being sold by participating nurseries. Audubon, Cornell Habitat Network, Cooperative Extension, Xerces Society, and many others also have information to help. If you’d like a bit of introductory and insightful reading, check this out. Native plants can be bought online as seeds or root stock as well, from places like Prairie Moon Nursery, which caters to the eastern U.S. There are many websites with information on specific plant growing needs, like the Missouri Botanical Garden site. 

But wait, there’s more! Don’t forget about our best friend, books! Scientists have been working really hard to gather information and publish it for the public and in the last decade or so a really good handful of books about native landscaping, pollinators, and ecology have come out to aid the everyday person in creating habitat! I want to offer a list of some of my top picks, whether you just want to learn more about the topic or use it as a planning tool, these are pretty readily available at major bookstores. 

Books on Pollinators, Ecology, and Native Gardening

#1 - MY ALL TIME FAVORITE!! MY GOSPEL!! Bringing Nature Home by Doug Tallamy (an esteemed professor at U of Delaware, I almost was his grad student). This gorgeous full-color book was the basis for a lot of what we have now and played a major role in introducing the public to the concept of native landscaping. It brought together concepts about the importance of insects, especially herbivorous ones, for birds and wildlife, why and how to support them, the reason we need native plants and why invasives are so harmful, and has a lot of resources and beautiful photos as well. You know how Christopher Lee would read Lord of the Rings every year? Yeah that’s me with this book. Everyone should own this.

#2 - The Bees in your Backyard by Joseph Wilson and Olivia Messinger Carril. This is the single best, most informative, well laid-out, usable bee book out there. Stunning portraits of every genus of bee in North America, with a section on their life history and a section (for us scientists!) on how to identify them under the microscope, thus it’s for all audiences. A significant portion of the book is devoted to the ecology and conservation of bees and how to create pollinator habitat. 

#3 - Pollinators of Native Plants by Heather Holm. The book I’d write if it hadn’t already been written, this comprehensive book brings together an incredible amount of information and photos in a user-friendly format. It goes through wildflowers of the eastern U.S. from prairies to woods and wetlands, painting an in-depth picture of their ecological relationships with pollinators. Each plant has a profile about its life history and growing requirements, and the many pollinators that utilize it either as a nectar source or a host plant. Incredibly useful when planning habitat, and it has a huge section with a mind-blowing amount of charts and visuals to help you pinpoint exactly the plants right for your site and needs. 

#4 - Buzz: The Nature and Necessity of Bees by Thor Hanson. A brand new book that I fell in love with as soon as I started reading it. Not a field guide; a book of science, conservation, and personal experiences told beautifully and full of passion. My favorite work of bee non-fiction! It is incredibly inspiring. It focuses on native bees, not honeybees (none of this work for pollinator gardens is really for honeybees, and there’s plenty of books out there on them if you’re more interested in that). Native bees are poorly known by the public, and this book endeavors to give us a glimpse into their world, from the evolutionary story that begins millions of years ago to the millions of alkali bees that have found a home on one Washington farm. You will come away wanting to start your new garden tomorrow. 

#5 - Summer World by Bernd Heinrich. Well, ANYTHING by Bernd Heinrich. He’s a renowned scientist and naturalist from New England who has a heck of a lot of books documenting his observations and discoveries about the natural world over the decades, as well as the challenges it faces in today’s human world. This is one of my favorites. I’ve met him and I am constantly inspired and often brought to tears by his words. He weaves tales of science, history, and his own life together to match that of Thoreau or Frost and offer us insights into nature that we so often pass by in our hurried lives. Other books include Winter World, One Wild Bird at a Time, Life Everlasting: The Animal Way of Death, and The Homing Instinct. 

#6 - Last Child in the Woods by Richard Louv. A groundbreaking classic that follows the principles of E.O.Wilson (one of the fathers of our field!!), that all human beings need nature to be healthy both physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually, and that we have an intrinsic connection to nature and a drive to have it in our lives. Our separation from it in the modern era has come at great cost to ourselves and the planet. This book sets the stage for serious research and justification for why children need to have contact with nature at an early age, how it affects our whole lives and morals as adults, and how it ultimately decides the fate of our world when those children grow up to either want to save the earth or contribute to its destruction. A fundamental and frankly, earth-shattering read. I read it when I was in high school, and it is so so important to the work I do now. Don’t get all ‘hurr durr Thomas Edison was a witch’ on me. You know we have a problem, and I see it every time a two year old is watching an ipad instead of what’s outside around them.

While thanks to the series various cards remain relevant among the fanbase, is hard to keep them effective in the card game as constantly adds new strategies and mechanics. The usual solution for this problem is create a new version of those popular cards, carrying new and/or improved effects to become the lead monster of their own builds. From monsters obtaining their own archetype to others with enough support to stand on their own, they might not be the original cards but gives players a better chance to confront current mechanics.

"Metamorphosed Insect Queen" is a more powerful counterpart of "Insect Queen", a well-known monster among fans yet with several flaws this new form easily dismisses. The main drawback of "Metamorphosed" is being a nomi monster, only being summoned by a card effect we can assist her with. Once on the field, "Metamorphosed" protects all Insects including herself from any targetting and destructive effects as long she's along another Insect on the field. In addition, right after this monster has attacked we can tribute a monster to let her attack another monster during that Battle Phase. Finally and overall assuring these effects become available at any moment, "Metamorphosed" replicates the original "Insect Queen" by creating Insect Tokens at the end of any End Phase. While "Insect Queen" struggled since her debut, "Metamorphosed Insect Queen" has all the tools to both protect her Type as well gaining a chance to attack multiple times to lead any Insect Deck with her pressence.

Despite being a nomi monster, "Metamorphosed Insect Queen" has the most liberties on her summon when compared to many other monsters under the same situation. From the defeat of "Pinch Hopper" to revival effects like "Call of the Haunted", as long an effect gives us a Special Summon "Metamorphosed" will be out on the field in no time. "Parasite Paranoid" is a monster with great potential when preparing the summon of "Metamorphosed", as if its own effect doesn't summon her from our hand it will prepare "Cocoon of Ultra Evolution" to potentially summon two copies at once. Despite her effects focuses arround her Type there's a chance to work along the Ninja archetype, as by the assistance of "Ninja Grandmaster Hanzo" soon we'll prepare "Ninjitsu Art of Transformation" to summon her directly from our Deck. Overall, from early to late support to several chances to summon her during any player turn, "Metamorphosed" might briefly leave the field to return in no time.

In a time where card effects rule the game, "Metamorphosed Insect Queen" can keep her entire Type completely resistant against most threats in the card game. With the ability to create Tokens during any player's End Phase, "Metamorphosed" alone has a safe route to assure her own safety or atleast make the opponent waste additional resources to take her down. Mass Effect 2 continues the tale of Commander Shepard, commander of the Normandy SR-1 and humanity’s first “Spectre”, as they investigate the disappearances of  human colonies around the Milky Way Galaxy. This puts them in direct opposition with the Collectors (a race of powerful, insect-like aliens from outside of mapped space), and directly aligns them with Cerberus (a “human interests first” extremist group). Informed by the shadowy Illusive Man that the Collector base resides past the Omega-4 Relay (giant super constructs that allow for near instant intergalactic travel), Shepard must gather a crew for a suicide mission to assault the Collectors and save humanity.

Mass Effect 2’s narrative focuses on building an “Ocean's Eleven” style crew to pull off a suicide mission. Because of this, players will encounter a huge cast of characters with varied backgrounds and skill sets that all fill various niches on the team (such as hackers, soldiers, and medics). With twelve fully fleshed out squad members (and even more supporting characters), there isn’t enough room to give them all the descriptions they deserve. ● Commander Shepard​ -- The main playable character and player stand in, Shepard’s backstory is pieced together by the player during character creation. No matter the backstory, Shepard rose through the ranks of The Alliance, humanity’s spacefaring military branch. Their many honors and distinctions brought them to the attention of the council, where they were made the first human Spectre. This came at at time of great strife in the galaxy, as the rogue Spectre Saren Arterius allied with the robotic Geth and nearly unleashed an unfathomable cataclysm. Averting this through both combat prowess and an uncanny ability to reason with people, Shepard made themselves a target for powerful forces throughout the galaxy.

● The Illusive Man​ -- To say the Illusive Man is mysterious is to say water is wet. The Illusive Man leads Cerberus from an unknown location, only communicating to Shepard through encrypted messages and proxies. Painting himself as a benevolent backer of humanity, the Illusive Man bankrolls Shepard’s quest to rescue captured settlers, outfitting him with state of the art tech, including a brand new ship. A staunch human supremacist, he wouldn’t bat an eye if any other race was kidnapped by the Collectors, but messing with humanity is a surefire way to gain his ire.

● Harbinger​ -- The imposing commander of the Collectors, Harbinger is less of a being and more like a body hopping embodiment of rage. Throughout Shepherds crusade against the Collectors, Harbinger will possess his soldiers, empowering them and granting them access to unique abilities. Fond of phrases such as “this hurts you” and “the universe bends to my will”, Harbinger has known no word synonymous with defeat. Although it’s motives are unknown, whatever they are cannot be good for the wellbeing of humanity or the Milky Way at large. 

● Jeff “Joker” Moreau​ -- ​Loyal, skilled, and a bit of a “smart ass”, Jeff Moreau is without a doubt one of the best pilots in the galaxy. Although he can’t fight on the field due to Vrolik Syndrome (a debilitating disease that causes extreme brittleness in his bones), Joker is always will to follow Shepard to the depths of hell and back, while supporting him using all the fire power the Normandy can muster. 

● EDI​ -- Short for Enhanced Defense Intelligence, EDI is the Normandy’s resident virtual intelligence. Hyper intelligent and incredibly capable, EDI is an invaluable member of Shepard’s party. Originally created on the moon, EDI grew beyond what her creators intended and rebelled, causing the Alliance to send Shepard in to shut her down. During the few years between Mass Effect 1 and 2, Cerberus picked up her code and recreated her, believing she could turn the tide in their mission to put humanity at the top of the food chain.  

Breakdown ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mass Effect 2’s narrative starts off strong, providing an excellent example of a “cold open” done right. While out on a mission, Shepard and the crew of the Normandy are attacked by an extremely powerful unknown vessel. Unable to fight back against the ship’s overwhelming strength, evacuation orders are given, with Shepard staying on board to ensure everyone gets out alive. Suddenly, after putting an injured Joker inside an escape pod, an explosion rips apart the ship and Shepard is sent out into space. Shepard dies a hero, their body pulled into a nearby planet’s orbit and burned up in its atmosphere.

 Two years later, Shepard awakes inside a lab, resurrected by the members of the Lazarus Project. With Shepard awake, the Cerberus operatives financing the lab turn on the scientists, destroying them and their work. Escorting Shepard to a nearby Cerberus base, the Illusive Man strikes a deal and alerts the player to the kidnapping of human settlers all around the system. Here, Shepard informs the Illusive Man of his plan to go after the Collectors, with the Illusive Man in turn providing dossiers on potential allies around the system.

 From here, the narrative then shifts into a two act structure with each act punctuated by a big set piece mission that advances the plot. Rather than a continuous flow of missions like the first game, the player is free to recruit teammates in any order they choose. During the first act, Shepard recruits Garrus Vakarian, Mordin Solus, Jack, and (optionally) Grunt. Once they’re recruited, Shepard is ordered by the Illusive man to go to Horizon, a potential target for the Collectors. Here Shepard witnesses their might again as they work to defend the colony, saving many survivors but allowing countless others to be captured. 

Act two is more of the same, with Shepard then recruiting Tali’Zorah nar Rayya, Samara, and Thane Krios. At any time two other squadmates, Kasumi Goto and Zaeed Massani, can be recruited if the player has the proper downloadable content installed. Once every squadmate is recruited, the Illusive Man sends Shepard on two more mandatory missions. One takes place on a derelict Reaper vessel, where Shepard is sent to investigate what happened to a Cerberus research team that went silent. Here Shepard (and the player) are given a crash course in “reaper indoctrination”, where sentient beings can be overtaken through strong psychic forces. While it doesn’t play a large role in this game, it properly explains and sets up an element that is used extensively in Mass Effect’s 1 and 3. While on board, Shepard also encounters the last possible squadmate, Legion, a friendly Geth unit.

The second priority mission is set aboard the same Collector ship that destroyed the Normandy in the opening. This mission is masterful in its execution of suspense, as the entire first half of the mission is spent exploring the empty, cavernous vessel as Shepard and their teammates wonder where all the Collectors are. As soon as they reach their objective, Collector relay tags that will help their ship bypass defenses during the suicide mission, the trap is sprung. The ship comes alive as Collector soldiers pour in, forcing Shepard to fight their way back through the ship and to safety.  

Once these missions are completed, an unexpected mission occurs. While Commander Shepard and the squad are out on duty, the Normandy is attacked again as the Collectors assault the ship and kidnap the crew. Here, the player takes control of Joker as they stealth their way to the ship’s computer core, where EDI instructs them on how to give her full control of the ship. If the player wasn’t already invested in taking down the collectors, this mission should hopefully give them one final personal stake in the mission.  With the final piece set in motion, it’s time for Shepard to launch their suicide mission. This will be talked about in the highlight section, as it is truly the standout moment of the game and why it is most fondly remembered.  

Strongest Element ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Without a doubt, the game’s strongest elements are its cast of squadmates. Each character is memorable, from the Gilbert and Sullivan loving scientist Mordin Solus, to the curious and surprisingly emotive Legion. While in other games, the base personalities of the non player characters are what you see throughout the whole game, here the player actively take a part in their character growth.

 After spending time with each character (usually by talking with them between missions), they will request a meeting with Shepard in private. Here, they open up to Shepard, telling them about a problem that they hope to fix before they go on the suicide mission. The player can actively choose which of these problems, or “loyalty missions” they can participate in. These loyalty missions, in addition to facilitating these character’s growth, can also have far reaching implications in the next game in the series.

  For example, in Tali’Zorah nar Rayya’s loyalty mission, Shepard is asked to represent Tali while she is on trial for her late father’s illegal artificial intelligence research. After investigating the ship Tali’s father was in charge of, and finding evidence that implicates him in the deaths of hundreds aboard, they stand trial before a conglomeration of fleet admirals. Representing Tali, Shepard can state their cases in two distinct ways, a paragon “good option” and a renegade “brash option”. Each one leads to Tali’s expulsion from the fleet. But, if the player had focused on sticking to one moral path or the other, two extra options are unlocked. In these options, whether it’s through reminding them of her hero status, or shaming them by point out this is nothing but a power trip, the player can clear the names of both Tali and her father. If this is accomplished, hidden point values are accumulated that carry over to Mass Effect 3. If the player reaches enough points, an important moral choice is given a third “golden option”. While some missions aren’t as far reaching, they all serve to help grow the characters through the players own actions, forming a bond between the player and their squadmates.

With such a strong focus on character development, it really is a shame that someone as important as Shepard hardly grows throughout the course of the story. The character creation screen, Mass Effect 1, and email conversations with their mother establish Shepard as a strong, dependable soldier who’s willing to give their all to a cause, but aside from that they don’t grow in any meaningful ways. Even coming back from the dead at the beginning of the game hardly phases Shepard, who instead is mostly just confused about where they are.

Mass Effect 2’s suicide mission is a perfect example of how to create a climax that balances action, narrative, and player choice.  Starting with the element of player choice, the player may attempt the mission at any point in the game. While it’s not recommended in any way shape or form, the option is always there for players, and it can be attempted as soon as Shepard leaves the Cerberus base. Further, actions made throughout the game are crucial to the player’s success or failure.  The suicide mission is split into four parts;

● Navigating the Normandy to the Collector Base

○ Throughout the game, players are given different items they can research to improve the Normandy SR2. These can come from suggestions from squadmates, or are given to the players by the Illusive Man. To make it through the asteroid field on the other side of the Omega-4 Relay with all squadmates alive, players need to have acquired the Heavy Ship Armor, Multicore Shielding, and Thanix Cannon upgrades. ○ As the player approaches the base, different events will happen. If the proper upgrades aren’t used, teammates will die. Midway through the run, a powerful enemy will board the enemy, forcing the player to fight it.  

● Infiltrating the Base

○ To get inside the collector base, the player will have to use the skills of a dedicated tech specialist as they move through ventilation shafts. While they progress, the player will have to defend them from Collector drones at various checkpoints. If the wrong tech specialist is chosen, or they aren’t loyal to Shepard, not only will they die, but so will others later on in the mission.  

● Holding the Line and Escorting Your Biotic

○ Once the entire team has reached the area where the captured crew, depending on how long they took to start the suicide mission, one of two options will occur. One, the crew will be rescued as the captured Horizon colonists are liquified. Or two, the player will be forced to watch as their crew is liquified. If the crew is rescued in time, one squadmate will have to be chosen to escort them back to the Normandy. If the wrong squadmate is chosen, or someone isn’t loyal, the crew will die.

○ No matter what, the mission progresses. Players choose a small team so that they can escort a “biotic” (space wizard) teammate through an inhospitable zone. The other squadmates are left to hold the line. Each squadmate contributes towards a point threshold, with stronger combat oriented characters providing the most score. If certain thresholds aren’t met, squadmates will be picked off, starting with disloyal teammates. 

○ The player and their squad set off towards the final boss, defending the biotic from waves of enemies. Again, choosing the wrong squadmate for the job, or choosing disloyal members will have adverse effects.

● The Final Boss

○ Here, players are tasked with fighting the games final enemy. The final boss not only wraps up the game for action oriented players, but also caps off the narrative by showing the players first hand what the captured colonists were being used for. The Collectors were in the process of creating a Reaper using human bio-essence. Every part of the games narrative has been working towards this reveal, and it pays off.

 ○ Once the final boss is defeated, the players gain one final moral choice. Destroy the collector base and end communications with the Illusive Man, or let him and Cerberus salvage technology from the base.  

With the suicide mission completed, players are given a variety of different endings depending on who survived and who died. In the event that players failed every step of the way, they’re given a non canon ending in the form of Shepard dying again, permanently.  

Critical Reception ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mass Effect 2 received universal acclaim upon release, earning a 96 critical score and an 8.9 user score on Metacritic.  

In their review, Joe McNeilly of Gamesradar.com listed the characters and interactions between them as highlights of the game. As did Mike Fahey‘s review of the game on Kotaku.com, who mentioned that the problems faced by the squadmates, while presented in exotic ways, are still relatable to players (things like familial issues, pride vs. duty, etc.). Gamesradar ended up awarding the game five out of five stars, while Kotaku left the game unrated, instead letting the review speak for itself over a score.

During the summer months I tend to try and fish the shallow spots in the lake I am fishing, and 9 times out of 10, I am looking for the cleanest spots I can find. Areas amongst weed that are getting attention from the carp…

I normally go in with the use of a bare lead to start with. This simple set up, can illustrate how clean a spot is, by the type of drop I get. After a cast or two, if it goes down with a ‘crack’, to me that is a very clean area and these are the spots I am always trying to find, and fish during the summer months.

If I’m fishing cleaner spots, I tend to use a lead clip set up with a 4” of 30lb invisi-link with a size 4 rigga chod hook and a 14mm bottom bait and a big lead . I would alway have one on top of the bar and one on the bottom , so which ever the route the fish take, hopefully they will come across one of my hook baits. Baiting – I tend to fish boilies and particle over the rod on to of the bar and a single on the bottom of the bar. The thought being that it is likely, and often the case that the odd bait will roll down the gradients of a lakebed, and gather in the deeper gullies. Fishing a single on it’s own on this type of spot, I feel, mirrors the type of loose feed the carp will come across on their journies around the lake. It’s just something I have always done, it’s inconspicuous and without a doubt helped me land those wary ones over the years.

The lakes margins also get my attention during the warmer months. I will always be looking out for those cleaned, and polished areas that the fish have clearly fed off. With a good pair of polaroids, a trickle of bait here and there, walking and observing every inch of the bankside margins often can quickly give the game away of the carps whereabouts and where they like to spend their time.

As with all the seasons, I will continually analayse my appraoch and results throughout that season, and when I feel it’s the time to tweak or change my appraoch I will do so straight away. Come the colder months, I look too, and tend to fish the lakes deeper areas, where natural food may be stored or still in supply for the carp. It’s worth noting, that these areas might not be as clean as those I have targeted in the summer months, so my set-up will be adjusted accordingly. I am a big fan of angling with a helicopter set up and predominantly use stiff link rigs of around 5-6 inches. The only thing I do chop and change is the hook arrangement depending on certain conditions. I will tend to pivot between a stiff D rig, a Ronnie or a simple combi link. What tends to dictate this is the lakebed substrate I am presenting over. In the summer, my mindset and approach remains the same as the spring, but my rig placement is based on what I have observed from those vantage points or felt with my marker rod and braid. In the summer I always want my hook bait to be visible, but not blatant. By the time summer arrives, most carp will have seen everything and you are also competing with an abundance of the lakes natural food.

With line concealment in my weedy venues, I become less paranoid as I feel more weed can provide more natural camouflage for the mono to weave amongst. Dan Chart Summer months can often be tricky to get a bite, the carp have generally spawned and you’ve either hit it right and had a couple after they have done the ritual or missed out completely and your fishery is inconveniently going through a slow period because It’s that tough bit that’s in between the hard feeding spring and autumn period, when the fish tend to be feeding properly, and instead take to basking on the surface, without a care in the world! So how do I normally go about catching carp in the warmer months?

Ideally, my water has an abundance of weed, I love the stuff, but then I make sure I’m geared up to landing the fish should I come into contact with one, both safely and sensibly. Weed is my friend and certainly not my enemy. It provides the much craved sanctuary carp require, as well as natural food larders from the many insects that thrive within its mass. In the warmer months, the fish are far more active than they are in the colder ones, so be prepared to be up at first light as this is usually the most popular time for the carp to be throwing themselves out of the water. This can save you a lot of time and energy trying to find their whereabouts.

Personally, I try to stay away from the deeper water, contrary to the winter months, there are exceptions to this rule but as an approach, I’m far happier fishing the warmer, shallower areas if I’m presenting my baits on the bottom. On weedy waters, where I predominantly fish, zigs and surface fishing can be devastating but, applying this method in the weedy areas is dangerous to the fish’s welfare as the terminal tackle required to get the bite is not strong enough to land the fish, in my opinion.

That leads me on to line and rigs. I’m a recent convert to the Gardner Hydro Sink braided main line, which I find invaluable for weedy lakes, especially ones where a boat isn’t necessarily on hand when it comes to helping you land a weeded-up fish. The abrasive material of the braid helps cut through the weed, helping to enable a constant contact with the fish. I have also witnessed the carp behaving far better when they brush against braid in comparison to mono as I suppose it feels more natural to weed. If I wasn’t using braid, it would be a minimum of 0.40 diameter mono in the form of the GTHD, or the ridiculously strong tow rope, known as Hydro Tuff, only if your water is very weedy.

I don’t necessarily change my rigs, other than upping the hook size to say a 4 over a 6 which is something a few friends have advised me who have greater experience when it comes to braid fishing.

Finally, keep an eye on weather conditions, like new wind directions and drop in air pressures that can switch the carp on and, if you are into your moon phases, time your sessions around the new moon, but I’m not going there, that’s for another time!!
