Aaron Hotchner x Gender Neutral Reader
a/n: takes place after constellations and before through and through. this is just a fun little piece before i continue my descent into Ouchtown, USA with the ajf 100 arc. i am really excited to include more of these early-series ‘home scenes’ with the hotchners and reader!
an ajf fic that requires no context!
words: 2.6k warnings: language
summary: happy 3rd birthday, jack! it’s a family affair, in more ways than one.
masterlist | a joyful future masterlist | requests closed!
“So, how do you know the Hotchners?” A handsome man, probably just a little younger than Aaron (but significantly shorter), asks, filling his plate beside you.
“I work with Hotch - Aaron - Jack’s Dad - at the DoJ.” You keep your tone neutral, polite. There’s something off about him - he’s a little overeager, a little too comfortable in the Hotchner house.
“Ah,” he says. “A profiler.”
With a little laugh in your voice, you ask, “Are you familiar with the field?”
“Haley’s told me a little bit, but I wouldn’t call myself an expert, no.”
“I see. Do you know Haley well?”
“Yeah, my son is in Jack’s preschool class.” There’s still something he’s not telling you, but nevertheless, he sticks his hand out and you shuffle your plate to take it. “I’m Joseph. It’s nice to meet you.”
Joseph. Not Joe.
What happens if you call him Joe?
Pin that for later.
You introduce yourself and continue to make small talk for another few minutes, noting that he’s filled a second plate - you can only assume it’s for someone else.
Let’s keep an eye on this one...
+++
“I’m so happy you all could make it.”
You jolt back into your body after zoning out for a couple of minutes, finding yourself alone at one of the patio tables with Haley. A smile breaks across your face. “Me too.”
She snacks on a chip, delicately covering her mouth as she asks, “Is there anything exciting you’re all working on right now?”
Since when is Haley interested in cases?
“Kind of. I head out to Colorado with Emily and Spencer tomorrow to go visit a religious cult on a compound in the mountains.” She laughs, and you follow suit. “So, it’s the little things, I guess.”
“Very few things have changed, then?”
You nod, a knowing smile on your face. “Exactly.”
There’s quiet for a moment and your eyes wander across the yard out of habit, taking stock of all the preschoolers running around, their parents at the perimeter.
“Oh!” She sits forward, pulling her knee to her chest and propping her heel on the edge of her chair.
You look back at her expectantly.
“Did you like the book? Catch-22 is one of Aaron’s favorites. I think I wrote that in the note, but…” She gestures vaguely. “I thought it would be helpful.”
Smacking your hand to your forehead, you laugh a little. “Oh, it was! I completely forgot to send a thank-you note, Haley, I’m sorry.” You lean forward conspiratorially. “I loved it. It was such a thoughtful birthday present. Thank you”
Her nose scrunches up as she smiles. It’s adorable. “Good. I’m so glad.”
+++
“Are you seeing what I’m seeing?” Dave sidles up to you, eating a piece of cake.
You follow his gaze, where Haley, Joseph, and their boys are kicking a soccer ball around. Haley’s full of laughter and unnecessary touches, but that’s not a new observation.
You’ve had Joseph-not-Joe’s number since he first spoke with you. He seemed far too interested in getting to know the people close to Haley to be without ulterior motive.
“I’m seeing something. I’m not sure what it is, yet.” You take a sip of your drink, letting your eyes wander.
“Not for nothing,” Dave says, “and, of course, this stays between us -”
“Of course.”
“- But Aaron thought Haley was seeing someone before they got divorced, in the spring before you joined the team.”
You hum. “Interesting. Do you think this is the guy?”
This is definitely the guy.
“Well, there’s more to their relationship than ‘our kids go to preschool together,’ don’t you think?”
“Yeah, I do.” Your eyes wander to Aaron, who’s chatting with a couple of the parents, Emily at his side. He’s distracted, also focused on Haley and Joseph with the boys on the other side of the yard. “Give me a second, would you, Dave?” You absently hand him your drink as you cross over to the small cluster.
“Hey, Hotch,” you put a hand on his shoulder with an apologetic smile to the mom you just interrupted. “I think we have a little bit of a crisis in the kitchen. Can I steal you for a minute?”
With a grateful look only you and Emily pick up on, he says, “Sure.” With a rueful smile and wave to the other parents, he leaves Emily to her own devices. Much to her (and your) relief, JJ and Will are on their way, ready to save her from the inane conversation.
“What’s up?” Aaron asks, his brow just a little furrowed.
Triple checking that the house is empty, you lead him into the kitchen and lean against the counter, crossing your arms. “What’s going on with you?”
His eyes flicker around the room before settling back on you and his jaw is tight. Somehow, he’s still trying to avoid you when you’ve made it impossible. “What do you mean?”
You level him with a Really? look. “Tell me.”
“Fine.” He leans back and mirrors you, crossing his arms. With only a little bit of reluctance, he shares, “This is the first big event...thing since the divorce and I -” He huffs. “I don’t know how to be a divorced parent when I’m...in front of people? I don’t know.”
You cross the kitchen and lean against the counter beside him, the heels of your hands resting on the marble. “You’re not alone. We’re here with you and nobody expects you to be perfect.” You laugh lightly. “There are at least seven divorced couples out in your yard right now. Weirdly, it’s normal.”
He shrugs. “I guess.” His eyes wander to the window, where Haley and Joseph are still visible with some of the other parents, seated around one of the patio tables. Joseph’s arm rests casually on the back of Haley’s chair.
That’s it.
“What’s going on with those two?” You pointedly match his focus and Aaron sighs.
“Did I ever tell you I thought Haley was seeing someone before we were divorced?”
You shake your head, only a little thrilled he’s choosing to share this with you so soon after Dave read you into the secret.
“I think that’s the guy.”
“I was wondering about him, myself. He seemed a little…eager,” you say with a laugh.
Aaron rolls his eyes. “He thinks he’s subtle, but I’d also imagine it’s rough to be the mistress when the ex is an FBI profiler.”
You snort. “True.”
Aaron’s hand covers yours and you look down, the contact shooting a spark through your arm and down your spine.
Isn’t that the biggest cliche on the planet?
“Thank you,” he says. “Thank you for being here.”
You look up again, meeting his eyes. “You’re welcome.” With a smile, you add, “I’ll always be here to save you from suburban moms and your ex-wife’s boyfriends.”
The smile you get in return warms you from your scalp to your toes.
+++
A couple of hours have passed, and Aaron settles into his role as the birthday boy’s dad. He’s been particularly demonstrative with Jack, but it’s all genuine. He chased him around the yard, threw him over his shoulder, covered him in kisses, and just generally lavished him in all the love of which he’s bereft while away on cases.
It’s simultaneously weird and very normal to see him with that face-splitting grin. It looks at home there, and you wish you had the pleasure of seeing it more often.
Watching father and son together is something special. The resemblance is often uncanny, even more so now as Aaron has Jack propped on his hip, chatting away, almost nose-to-nose. You’re only aware of the soft smile on your face when Jessica, Haley’s sister, plops down beside you.
“Those two are something else, aren’t they?” She says with a little smile.
You nod. “Two peas in a pod, for sure.”
You’re both quiet for a moment, watching Haley jog up to the two of them, her cheeks flushed in the autumn chill. She lays a hand on Aaron’s arm as she speaks, her other hand rising to Jack’s face to rub some frosting off his cheek.
“How’s it been on his end? Being apart?”
You look over at Jess. “It’s been alright. He stays even later in the office, if you can believe it -”
“Is that even possible?”
“You’d be surprised,” you laugh. “I’ve been thinking about getting him a shock collar or something so I can train him to be home by eleven.”
She snorts. “That would be a sight, wouldn’t it?”
The two of you share a raucous bout of laughter, drawing the attention of both Aaron and Haley. Their confused looks only make you laugh harder, and pretty soon you and Jess are clutching each other for dear life.
You don’t know her well, but you imagine you’ll jump that hurdle. You’re already halfway there.
In fact, the original thought isn’t even that funny anymore - you’re just laughing for the sake of it. It feels good.
+++
You find yourself next to Haley as the cleanup proceedings begin. She’s got a little smile on her face, and you take a moment to admire just how lovely she is.
Haley, you think, is a bit like the sun. She’s bright, but will burn the shit out of you if you’re not careful.
She glances up at you, blue eyes warm in the waning October sunshine. “Thank you.”
You hold up handfuls of wrapping paper and shrug. “No problem. Happy to help.”
“No,” she laughs. “I mean thank you for looking out for Aaron.” She lowers her voice and leans in toward you. “I know he’s not always cooperative.”
You suppress a rueful smile. “Haley, I don’t -”
She lays a hand on your arm. “I know. Just…” Her eyes wander across the yard, where Aaron’s passing (a very pregnant) JJ a glass of water. “Thank you.”
“I wish I could say it was my pleasure but...” you pull a yikes face and it makes her laugh again.
+++
You end up spending much of your time together as she thanks guests and people start to go home. There’s a kind of camaraderie that develops between you and it feels like you’ve known each other for years.
Her temperament tells you a lot about Aaron. They way they must have functioned together through the years. They’re so different, complementary, but you can see how things could get heated fast between them (good or bad).
She’s surprisingly affectionate by nature, her fingers glancing over your shoulder to direct you to tasks you’ve offered to help with, pressing a kiss to her sister’s temple as she passed her on the porch, holding onto Aaron’s forearm when she’s talking to him, and most notably, embracing Joseph by his car as he leaves, lingering only a little longer than she should.
Nevertheless, you’re almost impressed by their restraint. You haven’t caught them on anything major, and it’s been close to eight hours since he arrived. You’re sure you haven’t seen the last of Joseph-not-Joe.
Haley wears her emotions on her face. She can’t hide a thing. It’s refreshing.
+++
You lean on the porch railing, enjoying the crispness of the early autumn evening. Dave stands beside you for a while in silence. When he’s had his fill of your tacit company, he kisses you on the cheek and bugs out with Spencer.
Will takes JJ home a few minutes later. There’s a little smile on your face as you watch her take his arm down the front path, leaning on him.
They’ll do well together.
Soon, everyone else is gone, and you’re only a little concerned you’ve overstayed your welcome. Jess tells you you’re being ridiculous as you rearrange the fridge for leftovers.
“When has my sister ever kicked anyone out of her house while they’re still of use?”
You take a moment, fighting a smile. “Thanks, Jess.”
“As far as I’m concerned, the BAU is part of my extended family.” She bumps your shoulder. “And family is always welcome in a Brooks house.”
+++
Even when it’s time for you to go home, it isn’t.
Jack almost breaks down in tears when you kneel to hug him goodbye, so you’re trapped. It’s not like you can leave him, right? Not when he holds you hostage with those big brown eyes.
Identical to Aaron’s.
Funny enough, you can’t deny him anything either.
Oh, that’s enough.
Haley catches you by the forearm as Jack runs back to his dad, who gently launches him onto the couch. “You can sneak out, if you want to go home. I’ll distract Jack.”
You raise your eyebrows. “And leave you without your buffer? Not a chance.”
You’re rewarded with another laugh and she lets you go, shaking her head. She can’t say you’re wrong. As much as she and Aaron can fitfully coexist on their own, it’s much more comfortable with you around.
Haley might love him, but she doesn’t always like him. You, for some reason, make it easier to like him.
She resolves to think a little more about that, for future reference.
About twenty minutes later, you assume your role as the buffer and land between Haley and Aaron on the couch, with Jessica on her other side. Jack’s stretched out across all of you, his head in his mom’s lap and his little arm hanging off the edge. You managed to find a movie he actually wanted to watch, but you suspect he’ll be long asleep by the time it’s over.
Aaron’s phone buzzes and he maneuvers it out of his pocket. Being nosy, you peer over him without disturbing Jack.
Strauss.
He answers it, quietly. “Hotchner.”
You can feel Haley’s disappointment and residual resentment without even looking at her.
He continues to speak in hushed tones, drawing little patterns on the back of Jack’s calves as he does so. “Ma’am, I’ll take care of that when I’m back in the office...No ma’am, I’m with my family at the moment...Yes...Thank you, ma’am...You too.” Aaron takes a second and silences his phone, stretching a little to set it on the end table.
You’re sure the rest of you are wearing matching expressions of shock.
“It can wait.” He shrugs like it’s nothing and turns his attention back to the screen.
Turning to look at Haley, you find her staring at Aaron with a kind of soft surprise and pride in her eyes. You feel a little like an intruder, so you drop your eyes to the back of Jack’s t-shirt under your fingertips.
In the rapidly-approaching darkness, Haley reaches for your hand and you take it, your hands landing on Jack’s little shoulder blade. You drop your head onto Aaron’s shoulder, leaning into the casual familiarity of the moment.
It’s nice to feel like family.
“Thank you,” he says. It’s hardly a breath, let alone speech.
You nod once. Anytime.
If either one of them asked, you’d keep them from tearing their heads off forever. It’s not a far reach from your everyday responsibilities, you already do it for Aaron and Derek. Trading out one temper for another is almost easy.
Aaron looks down the line when the credits start to roll, finding Jess and Haley with their eyes closed, leaning against each other. You’ve been out for a little while, now tucked under his arm where it’s stretched across the back of the couch. One of your hands still loosely holds Haley’s while the other rests on the middle of Jack’s back. His lips twitch up into a smile as he rests his head against the back of the couch.
Maybe it will be alright.

With Wings in All Black
After a tragic turn of events,  Kazama Kaori , AKA Hex,  has her  investigation swept out from under her by the #2 Pro Hero.  Reluctantly  she joins Hawks in the pursuit of justice. Life is turned upside down  as her  professional and personal lives start to blend.

__________
Three for Communion
After the welcome departure of June, the rest of the meeting was spent going over everything she had acquired investigating on her own with Duke, and Hawks.
All those missing were convicted of some crime at one time or another. All were relatively young, Takei Kenji being the oldest. All under-educated with dead-end jobs linking them to large crime syndicates. Strangely, after their disappearances the area noticed a steep decrease in reported criminal activity.
“At first I thought it was Vigilantes,” spoke Hex physically piecing together the  evidence on the large table in the conference room “But then Kenji reappeared. According to his mother he was acting differently.”
“People change.” offered Duke “Maybe he cleaned up his act?”
“Maybe so.” Hex paused shifting through her notes “But then this name came up.” she pulled the paper she had written ‘The Bard’ on.
“Who’s he?” asked Hawks, plucking the tab of the can he was holding. This was the first he was hearing about this mysterious figure.
“No idea” Hex shrugged. “I was hoping to catch some audio of Kenji talking about him at the bar last night but well.. you know…”
“Poor bastard” commented Duke shaking his head.
“You’re the one who found him right? I haven't read the report yet. How... did he die?” her voice dropped off.
Hex didn’t have much experience with the dead. She had been to one funeral in her life but her Deda had passed naturally, slipping away in the night. He had looked peaceful in a strange sort of way.
Hex doubted Kenji was at similar peace.
“Not the prettiest picture. Looked like he had been dumped where I found him. Very much like a statement but I’m no detective.” Duke leaned back in his chair clasping his hands on the table  “Anyway, he was nearly in pieces, strangely enough, whoever did him in left the hands.” He held his own up in a macabre example.
“Damage from the quirk is similar to the injuries a U.A.teacher sustained from a member of the L.O.V. when they attacked their training center last year.” added Hawks.
Nasty, Hex reminded herself to mentally brace for the pictures once she did get the postmortem report.
“So much for his quirk.” Hawks took the last gulp from his can then zoomed it towards the bin at the other end of the room with a feather. His tone equally normal and used to such violence.
Hex frowned, she never wanted this to be normal for her. But, those were thoughts for later. Now... new thoughts and possibilities ran through her mind.
“If the League is somehow involved...” brushing a hand through her hair tilting her head in thought.
Her seemingly random encounter with the number 2 Hero made a little more sense now. It would certainly help people feel at ease knowing that someone like Hawks was on the case but Hex doubted that word of Kenji’s death, or the other disappearances, would ever be publicly released.
If she didn’t know any better, and she did, Hawk’s involvement had to be something else. She sighed.
“And here I thought it was altruism that brought you to the case. If The League is involved of course the HPSC would have their best on cleanup duty instead of someone like me.”
“So jaded Hex.” Hawks chimed “A woman after my own heart. I know it’s not pretty but let’s make the most of it yeah?”
“Yeah yeah.” she shuffled through her notes once more looking for her quick looks at each missing person.
“So why kill Takei?” asked Duke
“You said it yourself, it looked like they were making a statement. Maybe if we can cross reference those missing with known league activity?” she paused, eyes darting back and forth between the papers trying to find the connection.
“Turf war?” she muttered to herself tapping her finger to her lower lip.
“I’ll have Mr. Condor look over these. If there’s a connection he’ll find it. The police are pulling the phone records for that burner. Should have those by tomorrow.” Hex assumed Mr. Condor was another one of Hawks’s sidekicks.
“Then we can start knocking on doors and knocking heads!” added Duke punching his palm. Hex nodded, feeling useful and confident for the first time since she started looking into this matter.
---------
She parted with the Hero’s some time later and posed to meet Mayu for a promised dinner with her advance pay June, her new manager, provided her.
The two sat at their table picking at their food and sipping their drinks.
Kaori listened to Mayu go on about a woman who kept coming to her bar and asking her out. She simply nodded and continued to listen to her friend go on about her much simpler life compared to her own.
“It’s going to be so weird without you around.”
“I’m barely at the apartment anyway. Just a few days here and there. Just like a regular 9-5 In a weird sort of way I guess.” Kaori chuckled. “I’m a commuter now.”
“Only you’re a commuter who kicks bad guy butt!” Mayu punched the air, “Seriously though. I know I’ll miss you, but like... Are you ok with this?”
Kaori sighed
“Not ideal, but it’s a means to an end.” She paused “Better get used to the idea of Hero reporters skulking around the apartment though.”
Mayu rolled her eyes and drummed her hands on the table.
“It’s not going to be that bad, besides,” she flicked her hair “I’m always ready for the paparazzi!”
Kaori laughed.
“Yeah you thrive off the attention. You’re like the neediest houseplant.”
“All the more reason for you to hurry up in Fukuoka and come home and drown me with your affection and company!”  Kaori playfully kicked her friends legs under the table.
“If you're going to be that lonely, invite a friend over.” shooting the bluenette a coy look.
“PB! How spicy of you to suggest” May shimmied her shoulders  but then dropped them “To be honest, I’m in a bit of a slump.” pouting, rolling a bit of napkin into a tight ball fiddling with it between her fingers.
“Well what about that girl you were talking about earlier? The one from the bar, you said she’s cute and you seem interested?”
“I don’t know.” she sighed “She’s said she’s just visiting- so nothing long term.”
“When has that stopped you before, Yu?” Kaori smirked, gnawing on the little straw in her drink. Mayu grinned in return.
“It hasn’t, but…I just-with my quirk she just seems so… it’s all muddy with sharp angles.”
“You really shouldn’t be using your quirk on strangers without their consent.” shooting her friend a stern look.
Mayu scoffed and held her wrists out.
“Arrest me then Hero.” Kaori swatted them away.
“Just do go prying where you shouldn’t be. I don’t want you to get in trouble.”
“Ah, I’ll be fine. If it gets that bad you’ll come save me right? Hero?” Mayu flicked the napkin ball at her best friend.
“Always, you brat.” Kaori tutted and tried to hide her smile.
“That’s me!” Mayu chirped “Think of the headlines PB!” another giggle.
“Local Hero saves hopelessly horny romantic who doesn't know how to leave well enough alone. More on page 3” Kaori sips her drink.
“Ha! Sounds about right. Oh!” she excitedly bounces in her seat “Then, then- the local tabloid will get hold of it and cast us as lovers. Our passionate affair revealed for all to see.”
“You have too much time to think of stuff like that Yu.” Mayu shrugged  cupping her cheeks in her hands.
“Well someone has to. I could be like your media guru. We should make you a twitter!”
“Ah pass.”
“Get with the times Hexy baby, all the pro’s have a twitter. Endevor has a twitter- your mom has a twitter!”
“Wait, seriously?” Kaori bobs her head back “How do you know my mom has a twitter?”
“We’re mutuals” she makes a little heart with her hands “Who else can I talk about my PB with?” Kaori sighs feeling her good mood sour.
“You mean spy on me.”  Mayu puffed up her cheeks and threw another napkin ball at her.
“Not spy, just talk. She misses you. Maybe you should…” Mayu trailed off knowing how gloomy Kaori got thinking about her parents. She watched Kaori press down her feathers at her neck then pinch her nose, eyes fixated on the condensation on her glass.
“I should call them huh?” Kaori seemed far away,  Mayu knew to tread carefully.
When she had first met Kaori she had felt so buried. She’s certain her family hates her. But how can they? How can anyone hate her when she always tries her hardest. Even if she’s hard on herself too.
Even with her quirk, Mayu doesn't know much about the situation. All she knows is that Kaori feels selfish and guilty about whatever happened.
“Well, I mean, yeah that’s a good idea!” Mayu encouraged “That way you can warm them to not reveal your adorable baby photos to the press!”
“I bet my mom would totally do that.” Kaori snorts leaning her elbows on the table and messes through her hair.
“You can tell them the good news too!” Noting her friends pessimistic, but open, demeanor.
“Well I wouldn’t call it good news Yu.”  Mayu waved her off.
“It is good news PB. You get to work with the number 2 Hero!”
“Hooray.” Kaori dryly cheered, not anywhere close to as excited as Mayu was on the subject.
“That’s the spirit PB.” Mayu laughed, used to Kaori’s glib humor but noted the strange far off look in her eyes. “Hmm? What’s up?”
Kaori blinked, regaining her focus.
“Just, thinking I guess. You’re right Yu.” Mayu beamed.
“I’m always right PB, ‘bout what?”
“My parents, I should call them. I’m sure dad already knows but…” she trailed off continuing to mess with her hair as Mayu looked at her expectantly “It’s nothing, it’s fine I’ll try to call them in the morning.” Kaori fumbled with her words not really sure how to articulate her feelings on the matter.
Mayu reached over and clasped her hands around Kaori’s.
“Personal growth, proud of you PB. Ooo, I’m so excited for you! You’re going to be the next big thing! I know it!” she let go of Kaori’s hands and clapped her fingers together, giddy,
“Pshh, yeah sure. ‘Introducing your new number 1 Hero, Hex!’” Kaori mocked in a dramatic announcer voice “No thank you.”
“Well maybe not number 1 or 2…or 3-” Kaori cut her off.
“Your confidence in me is humbling.” That caused Mayu to laugh.
“ All I want is your first piece of merchandise, OK? Remember I wear a ladies medium.”
“Oh jeesh, I don’t even want to think about stuff like that.” Kaori sighed “I bet the manager is already cooking up insane publicity stunts to make my life miserable.”
“It can’t be that bad?”  Kaori made a scrunched up face.
“Well, I didn’t make the best impression and came out swinging. She is determined to brand me.”
“Brand?” Mayu tilted her head. “like cattle? Weird...”
“Err, uh,  It’s Hero jargon. She wants to market me because I fit the aesthetic of the agency.”
“Ah, because bird.” Kaori nodded at Mayu’s simple but accurate reasoning “Oh that reminds me! I was looking up bird facts this morning.” Kaori rolled her eyes.
“Oh this’ll be good.” waving for her friend to continue.
“Did you know, “ Mayu started putting her most matter of fact face on “that crows and the red-tailed hawk are natural enemies.”
“Oh, I know.” Kaori responded in a knowing lilting tone. Recalling how her inner instincts itched at her brain last night to flee or call for backup at being alone and ambushed on the rooftop with a predator Hawks. But he was more man than bird and was decidedly not a threat to her. Annoying, yes. Intimidating, no.
“But!” Mayu started up again an even more exciting bird fact bubbling forth “But, ok. So red tailed hawks eat crows, poor babies. But a red shouldered hawk will work with crows to take down larger birds like owls and other birds of prey!” Mayu grinned and fluttered her eyes giving Kaori a coy look causing the dark haired woman to shake her head.
“Fine, I’ll bite. Which one is Hawks?” knowing that is where her friend was going with this entire line of thought.
“No clue, you’ll have to ask him for science.” she shrugged with a grin and a wink.
“Biology.” Kaori pointed trying to hide the small smirk hiding at the corner of her lips.
“Biology is still science! But I guess it doesn't matter friend, foe.  Either way sounds fun, though I personally would prefer being devoured.” Mayu rolled her eyes blissfully and Kaori felt a small flush on her neck kicking her friend's shin causing Mayu to laugh.
“And which would you prefer, Miss. Chickadee?” referring to the text she had spied that morning.
Kaori groaned and pressed her fingers to her eyes.
“Death.” Mayu cackled.
---------------------------------------
A woman wearing an American Hero Association pin on her collar sits going over her notes of her time in Japan. This cyclitic system changes nothing. The flaws and cracks crumbling its foundation. Yet it persists…
She was sent here to learn, to find the best way to expand their influences over Hero society.
Every mask she had come into contact with was so trusting. It was too easy to get them to talk, so easy she didn't even need to use her quirk to loosen their lips.
It was boring.
Boring, but still- Hakon needed her.
The front office buzzer signaled a visitor at the door. The hour was late but that didn’t matter. Her door was always open to any lost souls.
“Mr. Darma, please show our guest in.”
Ben Darma did not have an AHA pin on his collar, instead he sported one with an indigo triangle on it. His hair was much shorter than it was 7 months ago. He filled out his clothes much healthier and he felt-
He felt...
He felt!
He felt
Content.
He had been so lost, so wayward. Now he had everything he needed. Ben wanted to give other people what they deserved, what they needed....
Ben Darma has never had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Bard.
Soon. Ms. Alice promises. He was so close to ascending to the next level. Just a bit more dedication then his true potential could manifest.
“May I help you?” Ben had opened the door revealing a tired young woman.  She was anxiously tapping her foot as she finished off her cigarette. She was skinny, tired, but notably used.
By society, by others, by her own vices. She was perfect for Bard’s teachings.
“Err uh,” Naomi paused mid drag. Honestly she wasn’t expecting anyone to answer. She had felt foolish giving in a bit to her own despair tonight. Sick of bruising her knuckles in alleys, sick of dodging the police, her family.
The sweet lull of a new life,  a better life was too hopeful a promise to beat down into her subconscious tonight.
“Are you lost, miss?” the tall, well dressed man asked her.
“No, uh- I’m looking for Kenji? Is he here? He said he would be.”
The man before her was a foreigner though he spoke naturally. Sharp features that Naomi found attractive though his eyes were...unsettling. The hair at the back of her head stood up as she met his dull drooping gaze. Kenji had similar eyes though his were not so dark.
“Did Mr. Takei happen to give you his card?” He asked, unblinking. Naomi took another nervous drag from her cigarette and fished the now slightly rumpled business card out of her back pocket. The man took it from her and  quickly pressed out the folds in the card.
“Very good, would you like to come in miss?” the man finally moved out of the doorway and held a hand out gesturing her inside the dark office space.
Stomping out the butt of her cigarette Naomi stepped inside.
Kenji had called his organization a type of charity but this place didn’t look like any soup kitchen or halfway house she had ever seen. Her escort brought her through what looked like an office  towards a woman who was standing next to a desk. She was tall, lean with straw blond hair and the bluest eyes Naomi had ever seen.
“Welcome, are you lost?” the willow of a woman asked Naomi and she squinted pressing her lips into an unsure line. The question set her hair on edge again.
“No, not lost. I told your friend here, I’m looking for Kenji. He said he’d be here?” Naomi nervously tugged out her pack of smokes smacking the pack against her palm. The man stood behind her hands folded neatly and the blond woman eyed the pack of oral vices with an annoyed crease in her brow.
“Stop that.” the blond ordered and Naomi did.
How rude of her fidgeting like she was. She was a guest in this place, she would need to be taught better manners. She found herself thinking with a strange buzz at the back of her head.
“I’m sorry Kenji isn’t here at the moment but you are welcome to wait for him.” the AHA woman motioned towards a door at the back of the office. “There is food in the back as well as some medical supplies if you’d like to fix your hands.” Naori subconsciously brushed along the cracked skin and smatterings of dried blood(some hers, some not).
Naomi didn’t like the way her brain was fizzing. Her instincts were telling her something that she wasn’t quiet listening to.
“Ah, no thanks. Just wanted to talk to Kenji. It’s late anyway- I’ll come back tomorrow.” Naomi turned and was met with her tall angular faced escort.
“It’s no bother, please, stay.” Her mind buzzed again. Naomi thought they had  invited her in despite the late hour. Such hospitality should be respected and pursued to its fullest. How thoughtful.
“I-I suppose I could wait for a few minutes…” she turned away from the man and shuffled towards the woman who placed a hand on her lower back.
“Very good. Now, what’s your name, lost little girl?” the blond asked sweetly. “My name is Alice.”
Don’t be rude Naomi, Alice was being so polite and friendly it’s only natural to do the same.
“Naomi.”
“Well Naomi, Mr. Darma here will take you to get something to eat while you wait for Kenji, how does that sound?” Naomi opened her mouth as if to protest but Alice saw her eyes glaze over as her quirk worked and simply nodded.
“Mr. Darma, speaking of Kenji, he hasn’t checked in has he?” asked Alice as she went through the motions of unlocking the deceptively complex lock. Ben nodded.
“Correct ma'am, he is still working on the outreach mission you sent him on.”
Alice hummed ushering in both Ben and Naomi and closed the door behind them snapping the locks into place.
Alice supposed she should be concerned. After all, a lot of resources and effort went into making Mr. Takei presentable and useful for their needs. If she really needed to know where Kenji was she could always contact Hakon. But if she did that… her little passion project would be exposed and the punishment severe.
Such delicate deceptions took time.
She had to be confident that Mr. Takei’s mission would be successful, he would be back soon. Alice organized her notes and quickly cleaned her desk, done thinking about Kenji Takei for the evening.
Besides, she had a new project waiting to be shaped and molded.
Smoking was such a bad habit,
Alice smirked once again going through the motions of unlocking the door slipping into her workshop to find her new medium.
But such an easy one to break.

End Notes: oooo, very spooky. Anyway, I still have some stuff going on. If you follow me on tiktok I kinda explain a tiny bit what’s going on. But I hope you enjoyed this chapter I am unsure when part 4 will be up. I’ll try and post something to kind of fill the gaps until then though. Thanks for sticking with me.

7 Free day [Songs]
F!ve Christmasses
<*buckle up*>
A Christmas that never was
A - Another Christmas, Another empty house, Another reason,There is no Santa Claus, May all your Christmasses be white,Though mine are blue, It's just another Christmas without you
Buck took another swig from his glass that matched his eyes. Not that he could notice that with how watery they were now.
Who was he to ask them to stay though?
The music station he'd landed on was ironically perfect for how he felt but horrible at the same time.
What was he supposed to have told them even if he did? 'Take me with you'?
Buck looked at a picture of Christopher and Eddie from when they went to the zoo together a while back.
A ding interrupted the song as he saw Eddie had sent a message to everyone. It was a picture of Christopher smiling on his back holding a snowball. How cute?
A drop of water fell upon his screen and for a second Buck thought it was his A.C. until he realized no it was him.
Where did the empty hole in his chest come from?
It was just another couple of days then things would go back to normal. Right?
Maddie and Chimney were on their honeymoon. Hen and Karen had their new child who was warming to them and Denny. Bobby and Athena had May back with them and Harry and were celebrating Michael's recovery.
When would he finally be able to do something about his feeling?
Buck took the bottle and before he could have a second thought downed the half that was left, straight into the sink. He wouldn't put Bobby through seeing him like this, had to stop it now before. Just before.
He grabbed some water and began his trek up the stairs letting the darkness claim the lower floor.
Sip after slow sip Buck got his eye's clearer. He sent a "hope you're having fun, give my little bud a hug for me please" before silencing his phone.
Feeling emotional drained even when he'd done was nothing but sit around and cry for a bit Buck settled into bed. His comforter welcomed him not like a warm hug but as a hollow one.
12:01 am. The clock read. "Merry Christmas." He whispered to no one.
In the morning he'd be fine. He'd shower get to work and go to the party he'd been invited to later. Alone.
But for now he just needed to sleep. To forget about how miserable he felt for a couple of hours.
It wasn't anyone's fault.
Why did they have to leave?
He missed them so much. Did they miss him too? He wished they'd come back as his thoughts drifted into sleep.
A Christmas that was meant to be
β - Feeling Christmas all around, And I'm trying to play it cool, but it's hard to focus when I see you walking around the room, let it snow, it's blasting now, but I won't get in the mood, I'm avoiding every mistletoe until in know, it's true love that he thinks of, so next Christmas, I'm not all alone, boy
"Where did all the mistletoe go?" Chimney asked Hen as they walked upstairs.
Buck was sitting with Eddie. This two day Christmas was looking to be a dull one.
No very close or exciting calls but they weren't complaining on this Christmas eve. They'd be home for a bit tomorrow but back in later on in the day.
"Yeah. I noticed that too. Did Bobby tell you anything about it?" Eddie asked looking back at Buck.
"Huh? No. Maybe we lost a few last year or they were getting old and falling apart." Buck shrugged while sipping some hot chocolate Bobby made earlier.
They wouldn't find where Buck had stashed them. Well not till after Boxing day and it'd be too late by then. No kiss grenades this holiday season.
Eddie got up to get himself a cup as Buck's eyes never left him. Hen and Chim may have seen him but they didn't say anything though however painful it was to watch.
"So buck, you coming with Maddie and me for Christmas or ya got other plans?" Chim asked from hiding his hand of cards from Hen.
"Yeah. Probably party hop. Think Eddie's gonna have his abuela over and said I was welcome to swing by. How 'bout y'all Hen?"
"We're going to Athena's to drop off some gifts and visit for a bit then it's a movie marathon while watching Denny play with the new stuff he gets this year."
Eddie came back to sit by Buck taking a good warm gulp.
"Mhm. It's no Abuela hot chocolate but Bobby made it pretty good." He hummed sitting closer as they watched a rerun on t.v..
The alarm blared as Bobby came out of his office.
"Snow machine buried a guy who was drunk on the job. We're closest, let's go."
Buck didn't plan for the others finding the mistletoe hidden under spare heat blankets in the storeroom when they got back.
"Weren't you the last one on cleanup duty?" Hen said looking at him from over the box.
"Oh! That's where they were. I must have came to get something and forgot. Good thing too with all the cold and flu going around really." Buck looked anywhere but at the team as Bobby took the box and placed it in his arms.
"Well it's a good thing we found them before Christmas was over huh? Why don't you go finishing hanging them like I told you to before and I'll get started on dinner." His words left no room for protest even if buck never would anyways.
When he was done putting up the box Eddie laughed at him. "What's so funny?" Buck had to ask.
"This your way of telling people to kiss your ass?" Eddie asked pointing behind Buck.
He felt the mistletoe he'd forgotten in his back pocket. "No. I'm just distracted I guess" buck shook his head.
"You feeling okay?" Eddie asked coming over to feel his forehead.
"Don't dad me. I won't hear the end of it from Bobby." He joked.
"Can't wait to be off so we can relax with mi Abuela and Christopher tomorrow man."
"Well we've only got a couple hours. With any luck we'll be out before the next big call."
As fate would have it buck jinxed them with a house fire from someone deep frying their turkey in the middle of their dinner at the firehouse."I'm sorry." Buck said as they were on their way.
"Not your fault the universe likes picking the worst time Buck." With the fire out they were able to go home.
Buck went to his and picked up some clothes before going to spend the night at Eddie's to Chris's surprise. It was a good Christmas.
"Mistletoe Buck" Christopher shouted as he came back with popcorn before they opened a gift at midnight.
Buck froze as Eddie kissed his cheek then continued into the living room.
He winked at buck but before he could ask they were fully into opening all their gifts except the ones that Abuela would be bringing over. Buck had to ask him later if that was a one time thing.
A Christmas that almost wasn't
− · − ·  / I'll find my way back home, And light up every tree, We will hang our stockings for you and one for me, 'Cause Santa called me to make sure I'm prepared, He said "Pack your bags and tell them You'll be there",
Buck could put up with anything for them, he would put up with everything for them. Once he was done he'd be coming home.
His dad's passing right now was like one final act of spite against them. Buck didn't care about their inheritance, or the house, or the cars. But responsibility fell on him with mom gone and Maddie in her current state.
At least one of them had to come and with Maddie pregnant he'd bit the bullet. He always would.
Their dad wasn't some monster, more so a ghost before he was even dead. Buck barely remembered much of the time they spent together.
He'd been here since the beginning of December. One week became two and a half and he was getting desperate. With the funeral already long passed and only the house left he was glad they'd been understanding of Maddie skyping for the reading the will.
It was lucky someone already wanted the house and the cars weren't something he'd wanted buck to have anyways.
Now all he had to do was get to the airport for the first flight from Hershey to Los Angeles.
A snowstorm chose two days before Christmas to stop Buck's in his tracks. He stayed at the airport praying that he'd make it home but doubtful with what the news said.
He eyed one of the cleaning staff messing with a Christmas tree as he was throwing away his water.
"Come on. Please. Why do you do this every year?" The young guy had muttered as he tried turning it on again.
"Need some help?" Buck asked coming over.
"No. Sorry sir. The tree's just being finicky." He checked the plugs but it wasn't working.
"Have you seen if any of the bulbs are loose?" Buck asked whilst looking at it.
"What?!"
"If people touch it while walking by they could have messed up a bulb. All it takes is one sometimes to mess up a whole string of lights."
Buck helped him look as within a minute bits were back alight. "Holy shit. Sorry I didn't mean to say that. You know your stuff mister."
Buck laughed. He couldn't be more than a couple years older than this guy.
"Yeah. We used to have people decorate our house a lot. You pick up on things even if it's just watching people work." With that Buck moved back to his seat.
He looked at his phone to see a new message. It was a picture of Christopher standing next to a hanging shelf on the wall where their stockings were. His was on the other side of Chris's opposite Eddie.
"We miss you. Can't wait for you to get back. Christopher says to make sure to tell you we love you." Buck reads as he holds his phone closer to his chest as if it's the last source of warmth in a frozen land.
"Just my luck. Snowstorm. I'll tell you as soon as we're about to leave. I'm coming back, one way or another."
Buck fell asleep somehow in those chairs after securing his bag and phone.
He woke to a person dressed as Santa shaking his shoulder. "What?" He said groggy.
"Shh." They covered their lips and beckoned Buck to follow. Buck's body was on autopilot as he followed.
Santa silently pointing at a single present under the tree. Buck hesitated to pick it up and read his name.
As Santa urged him to open it with a wave of his hand, Buck did so.
It was a little ceramic firefighter figurine that looked like him. The kind you put in a little village on a table.
Buck looked up from his hand but Santa was gone. The next thing he noticed was waking up to people talking.
"Flight 811 now boarding." Buck jumped up too quickly as he moved to get in line. With the snowstorm subsiding even for a while he hoped they'd make it out.
He felt around for the figurine but it wasn't anywhere as he looked to where he was seated.
After texting Eddie that he'd had the weirdest dream but he had to turn off his phone soon for the flight the plane took off.
Buck made it home for Christmas eve with a few hours left to spare.
He got to the house just before 11 to Eddie already opening the door pulling him inside for a kiss.
"God I missed you."
"I missed you too. Both of you."
"Christopher's asleep. Take a shower and let's sleep. He's gonna love seeing you in the morning Buck." Eddie brought his bag over to their room as Buck hopped in the shower.
Buck was already asleep in the bed once he'd dried off in only his towel.
Eddie shook his head getting boxer briefs on him so Christopher wouldn't be seeing him naked in the morning. In their rush he couldn't ask Buck about his dream but it didn't sound bad so it could wait.
Christopher was shaking buck awake shouting you're finally back it's Christmas it's Christmas buck! It was the best way to wake up.
"Presents!" Christopher said only for Eddie to correct him.
"Breakfast first?" He said.
"Breakfast can wait. I want to see Christopher open my gift. How about only one then a breakfast break. I'll start it while you and your dad pick one each." Buck suggested kissing both of them as he got up to start.
Christopher opened a new video game as Eddie picked a dress shirt wrapped around a new thermos. Buck was given a present as he placed the food on the table. Inside was a new wallet with a gift card for one of their favorite restaurants in it.
After they quickly finished their eggs Buck went to check his stocking and froze when he looked down at the same figurine from his dream.
"Hmm. That's cute. Hey look Christopher we got our own too." Eddie said beside buck pulling their stockings to spill them out.
"I had a dream about this?"
"Your psychic?" Eddie joked.
"I dreamed Santa gave me this at the airport but I lost it." Buck said still staring at it with wonder.
"Santa brought you back just like I asked him Buck."Christopher said hugging him.
"Aww. You know I'd come back Christopher. Even if it was late I'd come back for you two." Buck said looking up at Eddie.
A knock at the door had Eddie moving to let their guests in.
A Christmas that could be
Д - singing to the deer in the sky, singing as they jingle, jingle, jingle tonight, singing to the moon, set it free, you're the angel on the top of my tree, singing to the spirit above, sing your heart out with all of your love, Santa's coming for us,
Eddie watched as the Christmas lights danced on Buck's face while they wheeled into the park set up.
"So a Santa Claus went dark side and now we've got a Krampus slasher on the loose?" Buck asked Cap while they drew closer to the crowd.
"No. The police have a very naughty Santa. We've got a stabbing victim and some decorations that have become a hazard so we need to clear them as much we can to prevent more injuries." Bobby said coming to a stop with the mess in view. Chimney and Hen pulled up beside them as they hopped out.
Eddie saw why there was a problem with finding the Santa it was like a mini convention. It unsettled him that whoever it was could possibly get away with it.
Hen was treating the stabbing victim while Chimney looked to see if any other bystanders were hurt.
"Buck, Eddie, we're getting this metal reindeer off her. Ma'am stay still until its completely off and we have you looked at. It doesn't seem you were cut too bad but you should still let us treat you. 1. 2. 3." Bobby ordered as they lifted the heavy lawn ornament.
"I'm fine that fucking reindeer isn't gonna kill me."
"I'm glad to hear you're still in high spirits miss but please let us have a look at you."
Chimney came over to check her after putting a neck brace.
"So these things were stacked?" Eddie asked as he and Buck moved the deer away from it being in the way or people touching it.
"Has to be some funky welding sculpture. Must have broken off when they bumped it too hard while evil Santa ran for it." Buck surmised.
"Alright! Santa's who have given statements and shown I.D. you are free to go. If you have any information on the assailant please call the department." Athena shouted before she came over.
"Hi Athena. Did they give a disruption." Bobby asked as she hugged him before pulling away.
"Caucasian male, thirty to forty but he'd got a forearm tattoo of a rabbit and a birthmark on his neck so that's something." Athena gestured.
"Hopefully y'all find him before he hurts someone else." Buck said.
"You know it. Strangest thing is no one in the crowd saw where he ran to. They were too shocked trying to help the victim which while making it harder is worth it since one of them was pre-med and helped as much as they could."
Buck moved with Eddie to try getting more of the heavy decorations further from the walking path that they'd been shoved into.
After they pushed the original reindeer sculpture and some other large decorations Buck heard Eddie before he felt himself being punched in the back of his head. "Ow! What the fuck?"
In the next few seconds things moved too fast. Buck whirled around to defend himself.
Eddie ran back closer from where he'd been going to regroup waiting for buck to catch up.
The anti Santa was suddenly there and pissed off. Buck got a good right hook in before there was suddenly blood.
Everyone froze or at least buck did as he took in what he saw. Eddie was finally over and checking buck before turning to the bad Santa.
A metal angel tree topper had fallen and lodged into his arm with its trumpet?
"Don't pull it out! You need to get to a hospital then you're under arrest." Eddie told him while his anger seemed to deflate.
Buck looked past Eddie's shielding him with his body while rubbing his head.
"You're under arrest. We're gonna get you treated and booked sir." Athena said coming over as the Santa gave up.
With him in cuffs and his arm wrapped until he'd gets to the hospital in a second ambulance things were finally calm again.
"Buck keep the ice. Chimney says you don't have a concussion but you feel the slightest bit bad I expect to be told." Bobby said while they packed up what little gear they used.
"Hey Eddie. Santa Claus is coming to Ow!" Buck said inside the truck earning a shake of Eddie's head while Bobby radioed that was a strike for Buck having a concussion earning a groan of I can't make bad jokes?
Eddie wanted to hit him for joking but that would contradict his desire of wanting to see buck hurt. "He was in the box. Guy must be a contortionist." Eddie told buck which only earned a shocked gasp from buck and a quiet no way.
Once they were back in the station he was watching Buck like a hawk along with Bobby as they waited for Hen and Chim.
"You know the last time someone looked at me that hard we had sex" buck joked trying to lighten the mood.
"Like you could handle me, especially right now." Eddie scoffed.
"I don't have a concussion! And I can handle a lot of things, you'd be surprised. Haven't gotten any complaints yet." Buck puffed his chest and wiggled an eyebrow.
"I'm not looking for a one night stand though buck." Eddie regretted how that sounded.
"Who said it's gotta be one. I may not be buck 1.0 but I've got his experience. Just don't go for random hookups anymore." Buck came over.
"Are you just asking me out because you got hit in the head?" Eddie turned to look buck in the eye.
"Maybe that punch was the kick in my ass i needed to finally ask you what I've been too scared to."
"Ask me later, after you're all good. If you still feel like it."
"I will. I'll ask you a million times if I have to. I'm serious. I've been thinking about us for a while I just didn't want to risk anything"
"Good. I look forward to you asking me out at the Christmas party Bobby's hosting with Athena."
With that they went back to sitting around waiting for the next call. Hen and chimney joined as Bobby finished their late lunch.
Buck wasn't lying. He'd ask Eddie again tomorrow and have Hen say he didn't have a concussion too.
But for now he was content to sit here together. At least it was out in the open now and there was hope.
How Christmas should be
5 - I found, what I was looking for, a love that's meant for me, a heart that's mine completely, knocked me right off my feet, and this year I will fall, with no worries at all, 'Cause you are near and everything's clear, you're all I need, underneath the tree
Buck felt electrified like a living Christmas light. Today was the day he'd finally put it out there. He thought Eddie felt something too and it felt right.
Once they were off he'd confess that he'd slowly been falling deeper and deeper in love with his best friend. He had to find out if they could be more.
Their shift had been long with only one major call of kids breaking a fire hydrant and causing havoc with multiple injuries but not too bad that anyone would need to be hospitalized.
As buck was getting ready for the shift to end and to tell Eddie about them the alarm blared.
The shift in temperature had caused the ground to unsettle and a couple to slide off a cliff.
They'd gotten the first woman up but her girlfriend was further down.
Buck repelled lower to get her as Eddie was set to descend with the other girl safe above now.
Buck got a harness on her and they began pulling her up along side him when a large rock fell towards them.
Before buck could think of anything else he moved to shield her and took a hit to his helmet.
Eddie screamed his name as they continued to pull her up.
Buck looked to be okay as he followed behind her being taken into Eddie's guidance.
Once they were topside Eddie was asking if buck was okay while Bobby and hen took the other girl.
"I'm fine dude. My helmet took the most of-"
Before buck could finish he was tumbling. He didn't know if it was his adrenaline leaving him or his injury finally feeling so painful but he felt as Eddie got him before he could full hit the ground.
With his helmet off they could see the lump forming.
"Damn it. Thank God you're off the blood thinners finally." He couldn't tell who said it but guessed it was Eddie.
"We'll take him in ourselves. Hen, the girls are good right?" Bobby said as they moved him over to the ambo.
"They only had a few minor scrapes. Chim and I got him. You two can follow." They were at the hospital in a blur. So much for today being the day. His plan was ruined.
"It's just a mild concussion. You'll be fine. Stay with us Buck" chimney said besides him on the way.
"It's ruined."
"What's ruined?"
"I was gonna tell Eddie"
"Tell him what? You've still got time, "
"That I-"
"Buck. BUCK open your eyes! buck buddy no, stay awake man."
He woke to Maddie sitting next to him on her phone as the tv was quiet.
"Good. You're awake." She said looking over. "You gave us a little scare."
"What time is it?"
"It's 10 thirty. You've been in here for a good two hours. Doctor says you'll be fine but don't want you pushing yourself too soon."
"I'm ruining Christmas"
"No. Christmas is fine. You might be out if your next results are good. Even if you did have to stay here, it's not a problem for us to visit you here or wait a couple days for you to get out." Maddie put a comforting hand on him.
"Is Eddie okay?"
"Why wouldn't he be? He's safe at home with Christopher. Its a little late to visit but if we're still here he said he'd stop by tomorrow. You aren't in pain and you're talking fine. Hopefully those are good enough signs towards you getting out."
The doctor explained more. Buck could leave now but they would suggest he stay. However if he's careful and being watched by others she felt he would be fine.
With Buck signed out Maddie and him got to her place where Chimney was waiting with a late dinner. "Dude I'm starving." Buck said smelling the food.
"You're always hungry Buck. Figures with how big you are your body needs the extra energy" chimney said as buck looked over to see his bag and gifts from his place in the living room.
"I got your stuff from work then wrung by yours after. You'll get to do what you said tomorrow after you rest." Chimney said knowing smirk on his face.
"What did buck say earlier?"
"Nothing mads."
"That he-"
"I had a concussion! Wasn't I a patient? Isn't this a breach of trust or something?"
"He might have said he needed to tell Eddie something." Chimney said earning an exaggerated face.
"Is that why you asked if he was okay at the hospital?"
"There's no breach of trust if you brought it up to her buck. And from what we've seen, concussion or not you two are obvious to everyone but yourselves."
"You really do have a boy crush."
"Stop calling it that. Sure Eddie's attractive, and. I may like him more than a friend should." Buck quieted at the end.
"Don't tell him this but I've caught him checking you out before." Chimney said.
"What?"
"Maybe it's not so one sided Buck. Just talk to him." Maddie looked at him with understand.
After that awkward but supportive dinner and some good sleep they were up and ready for the get together with the others.
Everyone promised to open their gifts together before some of them had duty later in the day.
Buck took a gulp of eggnog as he waited for a chance to talk to Eddie face to face.
He came in with Christopher and they helped get the gifts from Eddie's truck.
Once the kids were gleefully playing with their newest toys buck took the chance.
"Can I talk to you outside for a second?"
"Sure buck. Let me get my jacket."
So they took to the front as the kids were in the back and in Harry's room.
"Yesterday I was planning to tell you something important."
"Hen might have told me."
"What?"
"She just said we needed to talk. You said so in the ambulance before we had to leave you to finish our shift then it was too late to take Christopher for only a half hour before he needed to be in bed."
"Yeah. That's okay. It would have been nice but I still got to see him and give him my gift today." Buck said. "But about that. I know we're friends. I know I might come off as straight but I-."
"You're not the only one."
Buck continued on needed to get this out before realizing what Eddie said.
"I've been into guys before, I just haven't been into many, not as quickly as I was into you. I want that for us. I know that it might be hard but I feel like we could have something."
"I think. No. I know I'm in love with you. I'm willing to try this but I don't want to lose you." Eddie said pulling buck closer.
"You won't. I'll always be here. Its where I want to be with you. I love you two, both of you."
"We need to talk about other things. I have to tell you stuff you deserve to know and the truth."
"I'm here. Whenever you're ready. Now or tomorrow but soon if it's important. As long as we're in this together we've got as much time as you need."
Buck finally did something he'd been thinking about doing for a while. He kissed Eddie the way he wanted. The way he deserved to be kissed. They stayed there with their foreheads connected breathing as the cold air blew.
"I can't believe they knew about us wanting this." Buck admitted still holding Eddie thinking about going back in.
"I can. We see the others every day and if I look back it's been like this for a while. I felt like this."
"Let's go inside. The kids are probably already back in. I want to play with Chris's new jeep. He said he loved it because it looks like mine."
Eddie grabbed Buck's hand and led him in. They were joined at the hip like usual the rest of the afternoon. Christopher was as happy as could be and they were too.
Buck felt like this was what he'd been looking for for so long. They'd work together to make this relationship last. He was in it and he knew Eddie was too. "You feeling good Buck?" Athena asked sitting next to him.
"Better than I've ever been." Buck told her with a smile and he meant it. "Merry Christmas Athena"
"Merry Christmas Buck." She hugged him as Christopher came over with his new drone.
"Cool bud. But you know your not supposed to play with it in doors right?"
"I know buck. Thank you for the jeep."
"Sure thing superman." Buck scooted over for Christopher to sit between Eddie and him. He felt warmth fill him as Eddie and him listened to what Harry and Denny showed Christopher and played with him earlier.

My dream started with snow falling in August. While rare, this is something that HAS occurred in Russia before, so my first thought was to take a snap and post it on Tumblr to freak you guys out.
That didn't work out, because I died. Or rather was dead for a while now and didn't even realize that because of how monotonous my life have been lately. The first clue was the Devil coming in disguised as a colorful salesman who was trying to swindle me out of something immaterial for useless tat. I saw through his disguise abd forced him out of my apartment.
It was then that I noticed that the outside of my apartment didn't look right either. It was all dark with neon lights everywhere and definitely not an inside of an old Stalin-era complex. I tenatively went out and met a maid who takes care of the place and what looked like a rift in reality. I stared at it for a few seconds and just bluntly asked why nobody questioned something clearly paranormal. And I got my answer. We were all dead.
I slowly started to grow fond of living in this weird limbo. Neither heaven nor hell, it looked like a gigantic sprawling hotel/apartment complex with differently-themed sections that represented different types of people that lived there. Everyone got a room to themselves that was shaped by who they were before dying. Mine was full of dust, ancient photos, dirty dishes and broken down electronic gadgets in a state of half-repair. I didn't really question it or pondered on the meaning. Instead I got to know my neighbors.
The two main friends I made was an aviation engineer living in what looked like a tacky nightclub, permanently in the state of after-party cleanup and a teenage girl who lived in a 70s disco lounge, also by herself. The girl was killed by a maniac along with her parents at an ice-cream stand and she was very distraught that she couldn't find them here. The aviation guy just deflected any questions as to how he died.
Humans weren't the only inhabitants of this weird place. There was a couple of insect creatures living together that I went to play cards with. They took some of my hair if I lost. There were also other, more dangerous creatures who couldn't double-kill us, but it didn't stop them from trying. The aviation guy built weird Giger-esque contraptions to either tame or subdue them and I helped him with the hunts, mostly because it was fun. One day I found a door at the end of his club that lead to an old military-style air hangar with dozens of planes covered in white sheet. I also found the Devil here, now looking more like Baphomet, who nursed one of the creatures with his tit. The Devil sneered at me, but otherwise did nothing. The aviation guy shrugged this off as well.
And so our life after life continued. We solved some mysteries of the inhabitants, like a pizza place being used as a cover for some gladiatorial arena where rich people made grunts fight to death for their own amusement. It was full of cryptic codes and was really fun to pursue, but in the end, everyone involved was already dead. The best we could do is just isolate and ostracize them, I guess.
We also did street racing. Indoors. Somehow. The aviation guy made an absolutely ridiculous contraption that involved live rats being strapped to the hood and it fell apart mid-race and made the proud ace driver we challenged laugh so hard he refused to take our payment for losing.
The view out of the windows was fake and there wasn't that many windows to begin with. I never reached either the top or the bottom of the building, preferring to stay close to the people I liked. I spent a lot of time self-reflecting on my life and molding myself as a person.
So yeah. That was one hell of a dream.

Christmas dinner with Anne and Dan
This one was a joy to write, and I thought today was a good day to post it. Thank you @dugle for the prompt request! I hope you all enjoy :]
Rating: G
Word Count: ~1400
Title: Christmas Dinner
Eddie knew it was coming and had been actively avoiding Anne ever since Thanksgiving. But it was coming, and although he’d succeeded for two long weeks, he supposed he wasn’t all that surprised when he got home one night to find Anne waiting in front of his door. Without preamble, she shoved a stiff card in his hand with swirling black letters and silver and red foil edging it.
“Now come on, Anne—”
“You’re coming,” she said, cutting through his argument. Eddie huffed at her, causing Venom to press curiously at him though he ignored the alien because when dealing with Anne, he couldn’t afford to be distracted.
“You know, I’ve got work—”
“No, you don’t,” Anne said, catching him in the lie before he’d had time to even do a good job of it. “I called your boss to be sure.”
“Now that’s just rude.”
“You owe me, and honestly? It was Dan’s idea.”
Eddie made a face but knew when he’d lost. “That man is just too good.”
“He really is,” she said with clear warmth in her voice. “But honestly I liked the idea, so you were screwed either way.”
What’s she talking about, Eddie?
Again Eddie ignored Venom and tried one final time. “You guys don’t need to do this. Vee and I were just gonna get a microwave meal or something and stay in. We’d be perfectly fine.”
Anne made a face before pressing the card in his hand into his chest with a pointed thump.
“And that’s why you’re both coming. Microwave dinner, Eddie? Come on.”
Eddie shrugged and looked away. “I mean, it’s better than the alternative.”
“What’s the alternative?”
Venom manifested a face and grinned wickedly. “Heads.”
“Oh, no!” She glared at Eddie. “That settles it. You’re coming. Remember, dress nicely, okay? And you’d better make sure Venom’s presentable too.”
“Presentable?”
Eddie’s jaw dropped.
“What? Anne, you can’t be serious. He’s an alien for Christ’s sake. He’s goo!”
“Then make the goo presentable,” she’s replied with that smile that left no room for argument. “You hear that, Venom? And you’d both better be on your best behavior. I’m not having my Christmas dinner ruined because you two want to be idiots.”
“You don’t have to risk it at all,” Eddie pointed out, but all she did was shake her head at him and leave, the discussion settled and over.
Venom had looked curiously at Eddie as they’d entered their apartment. “Christmas dinner?”
“Yeah, it’s a thing with her.”
“But you two are not together anymore.”
Eddie had groaned, glancing at the card before tossing it on the counter. “I think she feels bad for us.”
“What’s there to feel bad about?” Venom replied. “We will be fine.”
“Somehow I don’t think she sees it that way,” he sighed. “No stopping it now.”
And that was why they were now standing outside her and Dan’s door with a bottle of decent wine in hand and Venom tucked around Eddie’s body to form the nicest suit Eddie had ever worn in his life, even if it was made of alien goo. No one had to know that, and Ann had said she wanted Venom presentable. She’d never said how.
Dan opened the door, a welcoming smile on his face. He wore a red sweater that was casual and seasonal and in the back of Eddie’s mind Venom grumbled that he’d have preferred to turn into something like that.
“Hey, you both made it.” Dan stepped aside, taking the offered wine and leading them to the dining room. “You’re just in time. We’re pretty much ready.”
“That’s great,” Eddie said, moving slow as he took in the decorations while also trying not to look too obvious doing so. It wasn’t so long ago that he was the one leading guests into a beautifully decorated house he’d helped create with Anne. But not this year and not this time, and out of the corner of his eye he saw Dan press a kiss into Anne’s cheek as they passed each other.
He wasn’t jealous or anything, not now, not of their relationship. They were good for each other, and unlike Eddie, he was pretty sure Dan would never hurt Anne. Definitely not like he had. Besides, he had Venom, and really they were just as great together. Things, in a weird, roundabout, completely unbelievable way had worked out for everyone. He just … missed this. The hominess of it all, and that it wasn’t his anymore, not like this.
That, more than anything, had been why he hadn’t wanted to come. And it had been easy because Venom hadn’t quite gotten it.
Eddie suspected his symbiote was beginning to understand as he developed a tentacle to look around himself, white eyes curious.
“It’s different from the last time we were here,” the alien said. “You took the outside decorations and brought them in. It’s nice.”
“What can I say? I like to decorate for the holidays.” Anne gestured to the table where food was already packed among the fine china and flutes of champagne. “Go ahead and sit.”
“Something smells good, Eddie,” Venom murmured next to his ear. Eddie gave him a soft snort.
“If you say so. Just looking, I don’t think there’s much here you’d like.” Eddie went to take a seat as Anne and Dan put on final touches, and he paused when he counted the settings. There were four, and he couldn’t help but cut his eyes around, Venom sinking back slightly to avoid detection. “Are you expecting someone else? How come you’ve set up for four?”
Anne’s eyebrows shot up. “Eddie. Venom. There are two of you.”
“Yeah,” Eddie replied. “But we share the same body.”
“We’ve only ever needed one place. I don’t need to be present to eat if Eddie’s doing it for us.”
“But that cuts one of you out when you do that,” Dan pointed out, taking his seat beside Anne. “And we invited you because we wanted you both here.”
“It’s the holidays,” Anne said. “And after everything we’ve been through together in the last year, well, you’re both welcome at our table. And that means you both get a spot.” Anne stared pointedly at Venom. “Just don’t drool too much, okay? If you do, you’re handling all of the cleanup when we’re done.”
If that was a joke or not – probably not – they didn’t know, mostly because they were too astonished to think about it. Since they had to lay low all the time, the only times they were ever acknowledged as individuals in the pair they made was when they were alone, or when Anne or Dan or Mrs. Chen brought them up in conversation. They’d never had anyone cater toward their unique circumstances and acknowledge them both.
Eddie and Venom looked at each other, surprise swimming laps between them.
“Oh,” Eddie said, slowly facing Anne and Dan where they watched. “Well. In that case … we’re happy to be here, and that you thought of us both.”
“Right,” Venom agreed, his tentacle slowly flowing toward the place that had been set up just for him. “Thank you for inviting us.”
Anne smiled a smile filled with confidence and pride, one that always made her more beautiful. The one that always meant things had worked out exactly as she’d wanted them to.
“Now that we’re all settled, let’s dig in. Oh, and Venom?”
“Yes, Anne?”
“Dan and I took your dietary preferences into consideration, so we made something special for you.”
Venom’s eyes widened, and Eddie tried not to make a face.
“I hope you didn’t, uh, get any heads or anything.”
Anne made a face at him but Dan laughed.
“No, nothing like that. But since I’ve been working with you both, I’ve developed a good idea of Venom’s needs and the way they might be applied to the kitchen. It’s steak, extra bloody, with a special chocolate sauce I made to accompany it.”
“Is that what I’ve been smelling?” Venom said, awe in his voice as the hunger between them grew enough to make even Eddie salivate. “Dan. I could kiss you.”
Dan shot a quick look at Anne, and Eddie couldn’t help himself. A laugh burst out of his chest and soon the entire table was filled with laughter and smiles and cheer, and Eddie supposed afterward that he’d thank Anne for inviting them after all.
