the thing abt tsugimi ohba interviews is that sometimes i think he genuinely does not know why he does the things he does. like him responding to the theory that L knows capoeira by saying his thought process was that that was just how a person would fight while handcuffed like.... no it wasnt. that couldnt have been his thought process because light is also handcuffed in that scene but he's punching. but no one questions it and it probably felt like the right decision at the time because it makes sense that L would fight in an unusual way and light would fight in a more typical way. i ofc dont think the capoeira thing was secretly intentional but like it was proabably something more like that L fighting w his legs feels more natural with the way L tends to carry himself (like later in that scene he's crouching and doing the wrist-above-hands thing). but ofc thats a lot harder to explain both to urself an in an interview than "handcuff fighting". the capoeria v handcuff fighting thing isnt actually that important to me though im just using this as an example to say that like. death of the author aside jus cuz tsugumi ohba says he did something for a particular reason or w particular intention doesnt mean hes right. like yea sometimes the author meant x and we can ignore that an interpret y but othertimes people just dont actually remember why they wrote a certain thing. i think sometimes artists find something that works and dont necessarily know why it works or what exactly they found

usually when a character does Bad Things in a narrative (espec if they're not the protagonist) it is Portrayed As Bad so people who enjoy the character Likely Know They Are Bad

& either way harassing people over enjoying a fictional character is just really childish

if you don't like the character, that is perfectly valid. but there's never any reason to characterise everyone who likes said character as Evil, and/or imply they condone the character's negative actions.

also sometimes i look at internet discourse and it's like people want morally grey characters but then turn around when "morally grey" is not always "i have my own rules but i still make all the right choices !!" some of y'all just need to admit you just like good characters that's fine not everyone is into the spice it's ok to like that good protagonist energy
