i dislike mondays. ugh. but because monday is piano day i wanna know do any of the sides play an instrument?? & how did they react when virgil showed up, how long did it take for them to become comfortable? -🌙
i cant think of the instruments atm hshshhs i dont wanna mix concepts
how the light sides reacted when virgil showed up and how they decided virgil could move in permanently
TWs: angst (hurt/comfort style), anxiety attack mentioned, mention of abuse (in mentioning that this is NOT abuse)
virgil arrived trembling very late on an autumn night
logan was already asleep and roman was in his room doing something, only patton heard the gentle tentative knock on their front door
when he pulled the door open, he saw what looked like a child with a large backpack hurrying away from the door, so he called out "excuse me? Did you knock?" and it isnt until the person freezes and turns around that patton realises it's virgil - one of the sides he hasnt actually seen in YEARS
virgil hugs himself tightly, scratching harshly at his hoodie sleeves, mouth opening and closing wordlessly, not able to speak to someone so unfamiliar
patton can see tear tracks on his cheeks
"hey, kiddo, do you wanna come inside?" patton asks very gently, holding the door open as wide as it will go and taking a step back to give virgil space
it takes a good few moments of virgils eyes darting between the door and pattons shoulder and the sidewalk behind him and his feet but eventually he tiptoes up to the house and hesitates a moment before stepping into the warmth
as he passes by patton is reminded of how young virgil is compared to all of them, he's so small, just above five foot patton reckons, with lanky legs and the slightest baby fat on his cheeks still - he's only 16 if patton remembers correctly. last time he saw virgil was when he was 10.
he's different sure, his hair is no longer white but dyed a dull black, hes taller and clearly wearing makeup - and either he lost his freckles or he owns very thick foundation - but patton recognises the tentative tiptoe walk and the way he looks at the ground and hugs himself. he's still the same vulnerable child patton wished he could have seen more of all those years ago were it not for janus distancing the dark sides from them all
virgil is shaking like a leaf and still hasnt spoken (patton has never heard him speak besides whispered one or two words phrases to janus when they used to all attend meetings together) but patton guides him through to the kitchen quietly and makes him some chamomile tea which he knows is meant to be good for anxiety
he doesnt get much of an idea of why virgil is there since he still hasnt spoken a word - patton doesnt know at this point that virgil is autistic or selectively mute - but he knows that there must be a reason that paranoia felt the safest place to be was a totally new environement. something must have happened at home
he doesnt actually ask virgil what happened, knowing if he wanted to say he would, and simply tells him that he is safe and nothing will hurt him here. its late, if he would like patton can drive him back ((virgil instantly goes wide eyed and teary and shakes his head and breathes faster - patton holds his hand up and gently continues)) but if not then he can stay the night and they can talk in the morning
theres no negative response to that so once virgil has finished with his tea (only drinking about a third of it) patton shows him to the spare room, points out where the bathroom is, and gets him settled
((continues below cut))
it isnt until the next morning at breakfast that patton informs logan and roman what happened and that virgil is still in the room upstairs. roman is completely offended that it happened without any prior warning, that an intruder snuck under his nose, and logan is merely shocked and curious as to what happened.
i wont develop on that first day much more at the moment - but essentially the sides can only be outside of their own abode for 7 days (rounded up to midnight on the last day). if they are in the OTHER house (subconscious or conscious) by the time that week is up, their function will adjust and be reassigned to that part of the mind
virgil stays for six days - after the second day he was comfortable enough around patton to speak to him if they were on their own, but not at length. mostly whispering and never more than a sentence at a time. he told patton that he had a fight with janus and that he didnt want to be in that house anymore but he didnt share any details.
patton didnt feel he NEEDED details. if virgil felt uncomfortable in that house he didnt see why virgil should be made to stay there.
roman refused to speak to virgil the entire time he stayed there
on the seventh day of virgil staying with them, logan tried to speak to him in the morning, explaining that he must go back to the other house before midnight, thats just how its meant to be. it triggered virgil to have an anxiety attack right there in the living room and logan very bewildered helped him get through it.
patton took virgil back up to the spare room and reassured him that if virgil didnt want to do something he didnt have to - that included living with the others. virgil whispered that this is how things are meant to be - repeating logans words - and patton was internally furious. he told virgil he would soeak to the other two
that evening in the last couple of hours before virgil is due to either go back or be destined to stay with them forever, patton has logan and roman sat in the kitchen and refuses to give up his case
i wrote this dialogue a few months ago but this is where it begins:
P: He's just a child!
R: He's hardly an innocent little lamb, Pat
P: Don't you two remember being 16? Roman when you were that young you were still in school, you still had braces
R, blushing: No need to reminsce...
P: Logan when you were sixteen he hadn't even been created yet, not for another year. You were still figuring out how the mindscape worked!
L: I... was it really so long ago?
P: And when I was sixteen Roman and-- they were still-- *sigh* We were all just children. We were confused and scared but at least we knew where we belonged.
L, gently: Patton. He belongs in the subconscious with the others
P: You're both ignoring the fact that the must be a reason why he doesn't want to be there anymore. Why he doesn't want to be with them
R, angry and ready to fight: Are you suggesting they abused him??
P: No!! No, he said thats not it--
L: The mindscape would have alerted us in some way. And we are all essentially facets of Thomas; even if we all behave differently and hold different values, it is not in any of our natures to be maliciously cruel.
R: then what did patton mean?
P: I mean you know what the others are like. How they behave, how they live. Virgil has been with us for six days now and I can't be the only one who's noticed how different he is from the rest of them. He's quiet and cautious and gentle. He's frightened
L: Janus and Remus are not above feeling fear
P: I know but... He obviously doesn't feel safe with them. He doesn't fit in there
R: Well he doesn't fit in here either!! We've already got our dynamic all worked out - The brains, the brawn, and the beauty! A fourth doesnt fit into that!
P: well then we'll adapt so he does fit in
R scoffs and storms toward the closed kitchen door
P: Roman, please--
R opens the door and everyone freezes to see Virgil stumble back from it, clearly having been listening to their conversation
P: Oh kiddo... We were just--
R, bitter: Eavesdropping, huh?
V remains silent and glares at romans feet, hugging himself tightly
R: see, paranoia can't even look me in the eyes! He's obviously up to--
V: virgil
R, shocked because its the first time he has heard V speak and its quiet: what?
V: n-not paranoia. virgil.
everyone is silent and V immediately regrets speaking. he turns and hurries back up to the spare room
L looks from where V ran away, back at P's dejected look, and nods to himself, taking a deep breath
R sees this and instantly knows what it means - Logan has made his mind up. and what he says goes
R, sarcastic: great
R storms out and runs up to his room, slamming the door hard enough for P and L to feel it rumble from downstairs
After a moment P starts to stand up to go check on R and V. Then L's hand stops him
L: He can stay
P looks at L, eyes full to the brim with tears, looking so so hopeful and relieved. he sinks back to his chair and takes L's hand tightly
P: really?!
L nods and pulls his hand from P's hold: Really. If the mindscape thought it necessary to Thomas' psyche it could have prevented Virgil from even finding his way here. But it didn't
P wipes at his eyes and smiles wobbily
L: And we do have a spare bedroom. Which honestly always baffled me, I didn't request it of the mindscape... I daresay this may be the exact reason we were equipped with a four-bedroom house
P gasps: You mean this was destiny??
L: That is a highly emotionally charged way of putting it. But yes quite possibly
P sniffles and instantly pulls Logan into a tight hug. L very awkwardly returns it, then pulls back
P: Logan thank you so SO much, you have no idea--
L: I have one condition though
P instantly nods and looks at L very intently with a big smile
L, hesitating: You need to inform Janus before midnight
P's smile drops. his eyes drift to the digital clock on the oven - 23:34
L: At exactly midnight the change will be made permanent. While this was within Virgil's right to have a say in the matter, Janus is still his legal guardian. He--
P: he deserves to know...
L, sympathetic: I can handle telling Roman and--
P, desperate: I want to tell Virgil!
L, smiling softly: as you wish
...
23:42
P holds the telephone to his ear and dials janus' number. It only rings once
J: Hello? Virgil??
P: It- It's Patton.
J: Is virgil still there??
P: yes he-
J: For goodness sake Patton, do you have any idea what day it is, what time it is!! He was only supposed to stay a few nights!
P: I--
J: are you dropping him off? Do I need to pick him up?? I'll get in the car right now
P: Janus, I'm sorry he-
J: is he hurt?!
P: No! No he's not hurt
J: Then why the hell isn't he back yet! You know we don't have much longer!!
P: Janus-
J: I swear to GOD if anythinf has happened to him-
P: he isnt coming back
J: ... what?
P: Virgil, um... He's staying here. For good
J:
P: Janus, I--
*janus hangs up*
Patton stays frozen, hand over his mouth and eyes burning with unshed tears. he slowly lowers the phone back to the table, then sees movement in the corner of his eye. he gasps and quickly looks up.
virgil is standing just around the corner and jumps at pattons reaction, clearly highly strung. patton smiles reassuringly despite the tears in his eyes. "hey kiddo. sorry if i scared you"
virgil shrugs a little stiffly. it makes his backpack fall down his arm - and patton realises virgil has packed all his things in his bag again
"um.. do i- do i need to walk?" virgil asks, shaky and small
patton bites his lip and very slowly and carefully approaches virgil, stopping when virgil took a step back
"do you want to go back?" patton asks sincerely
virgil shakes his head immediately, strongly
patton nods to himself, but still prompts "are you completely sure?"
virgil slumps a little, voice even quieter. "i-i can go if you want"
"no" patton quickly says "no kiddo, i didnt mean that at all. youre allowed to stay if you want to"
virgil actually meets pattons eyes for the first time in his life - only for a second, but it blows patton away a little - "really??"
patton smiles sadly. "really really" then he turns serious. this is a serious matter after all. "but its permanent, okay? and if you change your mind or not thats completely fine but you have to do it in the next-" he checks his phone "-7 minutes so that I have enough time to drive you back"
virgil blinks hard and takes a big measured breath at that. he even sways a little and patton holds his arms out - not touching virgil but offering him something to hold if he needs to
virgil tentatively holds onto the sleeve of pattons fleece. "can, um... am i allowed to sit down?"
"of course, kiddo, come on" and patton leads him to the living room
they sit on the couch, just a couple of feet between them. by virgils doing - pat sat down first and let virgil sit wherever he pleased. when virgil didnt take the seat furthest and instead sat right next to pstton, the older side knew virgil must need comfort
and for the next few minutes virgil just sat and breathed a little too shallow and fast and looked at his phone every moment to check the time. it was the longest few minutes of either of their lives, sitting in silence and waiting for virgil to make up his mind
at least thats what patton thought, until he saw the time reading 23:58
it was well past the time they had to leave if they could get virgil back in time. virgil wasnt making up his mind - he was counting down the seconds until he was officially free from the subconscious
and then the clock hits midnight and virgil goes deadly tense and still, as if he's waiting for his phone to blow up in his face or something. neither of them moves or speaks, its been silent for minutes but this is deafening
but after a minute or two with no exploding phone or whatever else virgil expected, he breathes a big shaky sigh. he looks hesitantly up at patton, eyes falling just to the right of his head to avoid eye contact "is-is that it?"
patton nods slowly, a little stunned himself. "i guess so. do you feel any different?"
virgil blinks and frowns. then whispers "i'm... anxiety."
"you feel anxious?"
virgil picks at a loos thread on his ripped jeans. "y-yeah but... but my function"
"oh!" patton gasps, not knowing what else to say. he goes for reassurance. "well that's okay. whatever you are, you're still virgil."
"i... do i live here now?" virgil whispers, and the hope and relief in his voice is just too much for patton not to smile
"you live here now" he assures, feeling his heart swell when he sees the tiniest hint of a smile pull at virgils lips - the first sign of joy he's shown since being there
"can i please hug you virgil?" he asks
virgil hesitates, ducking his head a little, but then he nods very subtly.
patton carefully scooches closer on the couch and hunches down to wrap his arms around virgil firmly but softly. virgil is tense in his hold, so patton only hugs him for a brief moment before pulling away and smiling down at him
"welcome home kiddo" he whispers
...
so as you can see patton clearly warms up to virgil quickly - it doesnt take logan much longer though virgil is intimidated by him at first and they dont get very close for at least a year. roman hardly speaks to virgil for weeks, and beyond that their interactions are limited to arguments and insults for at least two years. it isnt until virgils third year living there when he helps roman realise he has undiagnosed adhd that they start to get along more, albeit reluctantly at first
i do know a lot more about this time period in the au (and some of it is written) so if you have more questions pls do ask!

Do you still do trolls requests?? If so could I get a cute dickory x yodel troll reader where they reunite after the world tour and everyone’s like awwwwe
ABSOLUTELY!
Throughout you childhood, things had been a little rough. Thing was being a yodel troll, you were expected to be as loud as possible without causing a landslide. That was tough because you lived in the mountains. Little you had a voice louder than any other, and it was killing you inside that you couldn't use it. Then one day it started to change. There was one family that was always coming and going. A father and his two sons. He used to have a girl too, but you hadn't seen her in a while. The father was named Mouse Whiskers. Made sense since he was short and his hair had a way of pointing out and curving up a little. His younger son, Hickory, had his hair, but grew much taller and bulkier. Towering over his older father and older brother. The older son was named Dickory. He was short like his father, but had long hair that had a bit of a natural flow to it. You talked to them when they were there, quickly befriending the older one. The three of you would hang out and have all sorts of fun together. One day, you and Hickory were talking while Hickory played with his toy horses and you were trying to fix his wild hair.
"Now that I think about it, I've never heard you yodel that much. Why?" Dickory asked. You let out a sigh.
"Its not because I don't want to. Its that I'm to good at it."
"Excuse me?" Dickory gave you a confused look.
"I'm way to loud. I would have to hold myself back or I'd cause an avalanche." You explained.
"Oh. But that doesn't mean you can't yodel at all." Dickory pointed out.
"I hate holding myself back. Its really difficult and honestly I'd rather not make any kind of music at all if I have to hold myself back." You said. "I feel like I'm holding myself as a prisoner." You gave up on Hickory's hair. Dickory hummed and looked at one of Hickory's horses. He picked it up and held it in front of you.
"You see this horse?" He asked you. You nodded. "Now imagine the entire neck and head gone, and replace that with the top half of a troll." Dickory said.
"Uh, pardon me?" You asked.
"That's a country troll!" Hickory exclaimed.
"SHHHHSHSH!" Dickory shushed Hickory and looked around. "We're not supposed to tell anyone but...there are other kinds of music that exist out there. A whole bunch! There's Pop, Funk, Techno, Reggaeton, Hard Rock, and so many more! Including Country. We haven't just been traveling. We've been visiting our mom in Lonesome Flats. She's a Country Troll. You live with your auntie right?" Dickory asked.
"Uh...yeah. But she doesnt watch me. I once left for a whole week and she had ni clue. I just have a bed there." You said.
"Then come with us on our next trip. We'll take you to Lonesome Flats and you could live their instead! You won't have to worry about being to loud or causing landslides. Though you'd have to sing Country instead of Yodeling and you'd be expected to be a hard worker." Dickory explained.
"Are you kidding!?! Yes! Absolutely!" You exclaimed and hugged him. "Thank you, Dickory. You're the best." You said and kissed him on the cheek. You didn't notice his blush.
The very next day, you hid inside of the wagon as the family made their way to Lonesome Flats.
"(Y/N), come on out. We're here." Dickory said. You tumbled out onto the dirt.
"Woah." You said as you looked at the small town. "This is where your mama lives?" You asked. Dickory nodded.
"Yeah...though I haven't seen her yet...she usually meets us here." You and Dickory wondered off in different directions. You walked towards the center of the town where there seemed to be a party of some sorts. Dickory wasn't kidding. These trolls were half troll and half horse. It was so cool! You saw a little Country troll with red hair and a green tail around your age. She was dancing and seemed to be enjoying herself. You skipped up to her and tapped her on the shoulder. She rurned to you in surprise.
"Hi, I'm (Y/N)." You said.
"Well Howdy, (Y/N)! My name is Delta Dawn. Nice to meet ya!" Delta held out her hand. You shook it. "What brings you out here to Lonesome Flats?" Delta asked.
"Well...I was hoping to move here." You said.
"Move here? Dontcha have a mama and papa?" She asked. You shook your head. "Oh. Well I can talk to my papa. He's the mayor round here. He might just be able to help you out. She said and galloped away. You looked around to fund Dickory and Hickory, but you didn't see them anywhere. You skipped up to a random country troll and asked if they knew where they went.
"Them Yodelers? Ah. Their mama died. So their papa took em and left. Good riddance."
"Dickory is gone?" You asked.
"Yeah. Why? He was a friend of yours or something?" He asked. You nodded and walked away. Their was a feeling in your chest that was hard to describe. It felt like there was a weight and it hurt inside. It didn't physically hurt but...it did? You were confused.
"I fall to pieces." You began singing. "How can I be just your friend? You want me to forget, pretend that we never met!" Your voice became louder. Thankfully, you had walked away far enough from the other trolls so that they couldn't hear you. "And I'll try I'LL TRY! BUT I HAVEN'T YET! NOW YOUR GONE! And I fall to pieces." You sang.
Delta Dawn talked to her papa. You told him everything about how and why you came. He decided to take you in as his own. The three of you bonded and you fit right in as the younger daughter. Delta made sure than you didn't live in her shadow and pushed you to yodel in front of the others and NEVER hold back. You sang and yodeled until your throat was sore. The Country trolls absolutely adored your voice and were impressed by how loud you could be. You missed Dickory and his little brother. You thought about him every night. You were still sad you never got to say goodbye or thank him. It was all because of him you were a yodeling country troll.
You grew into a strong woman. There was never a man or woman who caught your heart like Hickory once did, so you had an egg on your own and had a little baby girl. You ended up naming her Clampers. She'd spend a lot of time with you, her aunt Delta, and your cousin Growly Pete. She was a wild one and would sometimes ate random objects. You still loved her anyways. You were surprised to find her born with four legs instead of two like you, but you had to assume it was bbecause you grew up in Country, so her body adapted to it before she hatched. She spent time with Delta a lot since you'd scout the outskirts of Lonesome Flats for predators and such. You were the one who showed Delta the letter from Barb after a weird looking bat gave it too you. You rounded up more of the Country trolls to prepare for the attack and left Clampers with Delta. Your voice almost stopped Barb.
Almost.
"CLAMPERS! DELTA!" You screamed. You couldn't do anything but watch in horror as Barb turned everyone, including your sister and precious little girl into rock zombies. You were kept tied in chains near the center of the stage. Barb was pointing her guitar towards you.
"Don't worry. You're joining them." Barb said.
"No!" A voice called out and a small figure jumped out in front of you. When they broke out of the rock, you couldnt believe it. There was no way. They turned towards you. Their red eyes staring straight into your soul.
"Dickory?" You whispered. You were in so much shock, you hadn't realized that there was a fight going on onstage until the strings were broken amd drained you of your color. You fell to the ground, feeling weak. The chains slipped off and you felt gourseld being sat up.
"Mama?" Clampers asked, sitting in your lap. You held her in your arms and looked to see Dickory helping you up.
"Dickory?" You asked.
"I'm here, (Y/N)." Dickory said. You pressed your forehead against his and sighed, closing your eyes. Then you heard it, your heartbeats. You looked at the crowd and saw everyone's hearts lighting up and making music. You chuckled. Of course. I mean, you yodeled without a yodeling string, right? Delta Dawn made her way over to you and the four of you started to line up with the other leaders as you all started to sing. Even Hickory left the crowd to join you onstage. You didn't hold back a single bit. You sang and laughed with you childhood friends, just like old times.
"I missed you two so much!" You hugged both of them after the song was over.
"Yeah, we missed ya too." Hickory said.
"Look at you! Youve grown so big!" You giggled and then turned to Dickory. "And you, haven't changed a bit." You smiled at him.
"Really? Not at all?" Dickory smirked.
"Nope. Your still short as hell. And handsome. I guess you did grow more hair though." You laughed.
"Haha! That's what I thought waitwhat?" Dickory asked. Before he knew it, you picked him up and kissed him. He completely melted into it.
"EWW! MAMA!" Clampers exclaimed.
"Aww thats so cute!" You heard Queen Poppy say. You realized that everyone was looking in your direction and "Awwing" at the two of you.
"Well, if you take out all the people staring, I could get used to this." Dickory pulled you back into the kiss.
"Ah jeez get a room." Hickory rolled his eyes and walked away.
I apologize for it being so long, but if I'm doing a request, I freaking COMMIT to it. Though I admit I MIGHT have gone a teeny bit over the top with this? I hope you still enjoy though.

You felt the irritating sound ringing in your ear, making your ears more sensitive, but you continued dancing on the center of the dance floor with a cute boy you couldn't even remember his name.
It was the last party of the summer before school, which you honestly didn't know why you were at. You were new.
You moved here at the beginning of the summer. Being a new student when it was your last year was tough. You didn't see the point but your parents needed the change. You didn't want it. You wanted your old friends. You considered yourself fairly popular at your last school. Not by choice for the matter, it was just the people you got along with.
Anyway here you were at some foreign party with foreign people. Suhyun was one of your neighbors and you got close immensely, for the two months you've been here.
She's a senior as well but the bad thing was, this is her going away party. She was moving in a few days. Right before the school year starts. At first you felt releaved that you would know at least one person going into this ratchet school but of course, nothing could go your way.
She told you earlier, when you were sober, that she would introduce you to all her friends and help you feel more comfortable but you knew by Monday, they would all forget you anyway.
You felt like you were a decent person but you always had a slow start with people. You would avoid anyone and everyone, unless they showed in interest in you. Other wise, what's the point.
But there was the boy. The boy you were dancing with who showed interest but you had an uneasy feeling about him. One you couldn't read, but there was something about him that pulled you to him.
It all started when Suhyun introduced you to him. Only 2 hours ago.
"So this school is full of assholes but you will adapt." She said giving you your first drink of the night.
"Hey Miyeon, get a room!" Suhyun shouted across the room. "That is Miyeon and Ju-ne. I set them up last year and now look at them." She gloated
The doorbell rung, signaling more people to enter the already crowded party. As soon as the people passed through, something caught her attention outside.
"Hey assholes, are you coming in or what?"
You followed her outside to see the commotion. She was talking to a few guys goofing off.
"Is she speaking to us?" One boy said sarcastically.
"She's speaking to us not you." The other boy spoke causing Suhyun to roll her eyes.
"I'm talking to all of you, even you Hanbin."
"She must be drunk." The boy next to him spoke.
"I had 4 months to get over it." She shrugged. "Now get your ass's in here."
"Oh by the way, that is Bobby, Dk, Yunhyeong, and Hanbin.....my ex."
Oh now the random conversation suddenly made sense.
You looked back and noticed the boy smile at you sweetly.
And that's where it all began. Fast forward to you working up a sweat on the dance floor next to the boy. The boy that you learned was named Hanbin. The ex of your new friend and off limits. She didn't have to tell you but you were loyal when it came to girl code.
Here you were breaking it anyway, but in your defence you weren't in your right mind. The alcohol had taken over and you hoped things wouldn't take off.
-
"You will be fine." It was the day before school started and the official last day of Suhyun. Her parents were putting the last of their things in the moving truck. "I told Miyeon to help you find your classes."
You nodded. "And I have something to help you get by." She looked around for her parents and snuck something out of her pocket. She placed it in your hand and once you saw it you cheeks lit up immediately.
"A condom?" You questioned. "Why?"
"To not get pregnant stupid."
"I understand that thanks." You said sarcastically. "But I have self control."
"I don't know, it didn't seem that way a few nights ago." She smirked. You honestly didn't even remember. The last thing was you puking your brains out.
"What do you mean? What happened."
"You were in a three way make out session."
"No."
She nodded while biting her lip. "Don't worry I took you away before something else happened. You were all drunk so I wouldn't be surprised if any of you remember."
Who was it? Was it the boy?
"So you're giving me one condom?"
"Jeez girl."
"I didn't mean it like that." You laughed.
"Just be careful, these boys......can be a little wild."
You nodded and finally gave her a good bye hug.
-
You hesitate to step out of your father's car. "Can I just be homeschooled?"
"I know it's scary starting a new school, but at least it's the first day, you don't have to worry about catching up in any classes."
"That wouldn't matter anyway, j get good grades." You smiled.
"I know." He caressed your cheek. "Now go before you're late."
"Okay." You finally got out. You walked up to the office to get your schedule. You saw no sign of Miyeon. Typical.
As you were walking to the class you bumbed into someone dropping your books. Cliche but it actually happened. You looked seeing the boy. The boy from the party. The boy that smiled at you. And the boy that was dancing with you.
"(Y/L/N) (Y/N)" He said picking up your books.
"Kim Hanbin."
"You remember my name." He smiled.
"How could I forget, I had a lovely chat with your ex." You teased. You were really dying on the inside but you didn't want to show him fear. Suhyun told you he's a popular kid and he's trouble so the last thing you wanted was to be on his radar for bullying.
Hanbin rolled his eyes playfully. "I wondered what she had to say."
"She told me to stay away from you."
"Whys that?" He arched his eyebrows.
"She said you smell." A small smile started to form.
"I smell huh?" He smiled. "I hope that doesnt bother you."
What? You knew she was kidding but anyways, why should you care? You were new and he was popular. Why were you on his radar so quickly?
"Why would it bother me?" You said as your voice dimmed.
"I would like to ask you out, but if you turn me down because I stink, I might be heart broken." He held his heart in pain.
You blushed instantly.
Why was he making you feel mushy inside? You barely knew him. You honestly wanted to accept his offer but....girl code.
"Can I think about it?" You scrunched up your face in innocence. You didn't want to make him feel bad. You didn't want to say no but you couldn't say yes either.
"Oh no, my horrible odor has let me down once again." He said dramatically causing you to laugh. "I promise I will smell better tomorrow and I hope that changes your mind."
"Maybe." You smiled.
"There you are (Y/N)." You heard Miyeon call your name. Maybe she was helping you after all.
"I'll see you later." Hanbin walked off, smiling one last time.
"Why was he talking to you?" She asked.
"He wanted to help me find my classes." You lied.
She huffed. "That doesn't sound like him."
"Stay away from him, he's trouble." She continued.
"Okay." It was your first day and you already could sense the drama. You were never one to get dragged in, just watched from the side lines. You wanted to enjoy your last high school year, not be sucked into whatever mystery lies within these walls.
Was this boy worth it?
-
Later on when you got home, Suhyun called you in a facechat call. You already missed her.
"Soooo, how was your first day?" She asked.
You started to blush thinking about Hanbin. You knew it was wrong but you already felt your crush forming.
"I know that look who is he?"
"There is no he." You shrugged.
"Just spit it out."
You felt guilty. "Okay so I kind of got asked out by this boy...."
"On your first day? Which boy?" She was leaning forward more interested.
You bit your lip with a painful expression.
"Oh." Was all she said.
You didn't even have to tell her. "Hanbin wasn't it?"
"Don't even worry, I said no." You lied.
"Why did you do that?" She shrugged.
What? You were beyond confused and your expression gave it away. "Because he's your ex."
"So? We broke up."
"Um...girl code."
"If you want to go out with him, I'm giving you permission." She said like it was nothing.
You just stared off into space confused. "(Y/N) our feelings for each other are long gone......go have fun with him. I don't care."
"Really?"
"Sure." She laughed.
Then you both hung up the call. You had a big smile on your face just thinking of the boy. But that smile quickly faded just thinking about everything. Why did they even break up?
Stay away from him he's trouble. Stay away from him he's trouble.
That's all you ever heard since that party when you first laid eyes on him.
Was there something you weren't seeing?
-
You had your guard up during school the whole next day which was making you flinch at every little thing. You thought about it all night. Maybe you should stay away from him. The signs were clearly there but you just wanted to know all the mystery behind it. Was he that bad?
"(Y/N)." You jumped as you heard a sudden voice. "Hi." He gave you that award winning smile.
"Hi." You tugged your hair behind your ear.
"I smell clean, I promise." Why was he being so sweet to your face if he was so called trouble?
You couldn't help but blush and shake your head. "That was a joke you know."
"What?" He said in a sarcastic shock. "You mean I could of taken you out last night?"
Stop blushing!
"Look, if you don't want to go out I understand." He laughed. "But I want to get to know you anyways."
"Its not that." You simply said. "I wanted to talk to Suhyun first."
"Oh, I get it....researching."
"No." You pushed him. "Girls don't date their friends ex's, it's code." You shrugged.
"Okay." He leaned closer. "So does that mean...."
Your heart was beating a mile a minute. Should you say yes? One date, it couldn't hurt. You can see what he was all about and why people were so pessimistic about him.
"Okay." Your voice was barely audible.
"Was that a yes?" He held his heart again in relief. "She said yes."
"Stop being so loud." You giggled covering your face.
"I'll pick you up around 8." He smiled.
You started to walk away to your class with your face as red as ever.
"You won't regret this (Y/N) (Y/L/N). I promise." He called after you.
Okay people were staring. You even saw a few girls give you a disgusted look. The bad thing was, if he was so popular, there's a chance he could pull you into that crowd and it could turn out good or bad. You just hope you were cautions of what you were getting into.
-
You felt like you can picture his whole life in a simple second. Perfect athlete with a scholarship waiting at the end of his graduation. A perfect family proud of his every achievement. Always had the perfect grades and girlfriend to bring home. Money.
But you couldn't be ever so wrong.
After school Hanbin said goodbye to Bobby as he reached his apartment. "Do you want me to go in there with you?"
He looked out the window. "No, I'll be okay."
"Do you need money? I can help you get a car."
"My mom wouldn't even let me save enough money to get one. She'll find an excuse for something more important to spend it on."
"A car is important." Bobby sighed. "You can just live with me until school is over man."
"Thank you but I can't leave my mom with that asshole." Hanbin finally got out and walked up to his apartment.
He opened his door and saw Jaesun sitting on the couch with an empty beer in his hand. His mom was no where in site.
"Where's my mom?"
"She's out buying my stuff." He said.
Hanbin glared at him before walking past. "Hey B.I hand me a beer."
"You aren't allowed to call me that." He said with attitude.
"What do you want me to call You? Pabo? Just get the beer."
He didn't he walked past to his room and locked the door. He could hear him approach the door with a bang and jiggled the handle seeing it was locked. Jaesun laughed humorsly, then his tone went dark. "You better learn to respect me boy."
"Fuck you." Hanbin grunted to himself.
He didn't even come out once he heard him mom come home. "Hanbin please come out."
He was sensitive when it came to his mom. He opened the door and saw his mom and gave her a hug. "What is this I hear you ignoring Jaesun?"
He pulled away. "Sorry I chose not to be his slave." He said loudly getting Jaesun's attention.
"What the fuck did you say to me?" He got up. "You can't respect me you can get out of my home."
"This isn't your home, me and my mom lived here first, you evaded."
Jaesun walked over angrily.
"Okay stop." Ms. Kim stood in between them. "You need to chill out and you need to chill out."
"Why do you always take his side." Hanbin said disappointed with his face flustered.
His mother looked up at him. "I'm not taking sides." Then she stepped away and made her way to the kitchen.
Jaesun pushed Hanbin into the wall roughly. "You speak that way to me again, your mother isn't going to stop me from teaching you a lesson."
He kept his mouth shut, but gave him a dark glare. Jaesun just laughed it off and went back to his couch. Hanbin grabbed his shoes and his jacket and made his way to the door. "Where are you going I'm making dinner?" His mom stopped him.
"Out." He said harsh.
"You don have to feed that brat hun. More for us."
Hanbin just ignored the low life and continued on his way.
He was on his way to pick you up. He knew where you lived since you were Suhyun's neighbor. The town wasn't that big so walking wasn't a big deal. He looked at your house for a bit, seeing how nice and cozy it was. Something he always wanted.
He walked up to the door and knocked gently. A nice women opened up the door with a confused but genuine smile. "Hello."
"Hi is (Y/N)-"
"I'm coming." You ran down the stairs and out the door.
"(Y/N)?" Your mother stopped you.
"I'm sorry, mom this is Hanbin and Hanbin this is my mom....okay let's go." You grabbed his hand and tried to make a run for it.
"You are going on a date and you didn't tell me? I feel like I should go over some ground rules."
You rolled your eyes in annoyance. "Mom please no."
Hanbin smiled. This was the warm and closness to a family he only dreamed about.
"I want you back by 10, no drinking, no drugs, no sex."
"Oh my God, please stop, I know common sense."
"Okay." She gave a warning look to Hanbin but smiled at the end.
"Thank you Mrs. (Y/L/N)."
"Where's your car?" You asked.
"I don't have a car?" He said with a smile.
"You smell that nice but you don't have a car."
Hanbin rolled his eyes playfully.
You were surprised really. You were sure he had money. He was popular, charming, super attractive. You were sure he had his life made.
"I'm working on getting one." He said hopeful.
"No problem. I like walking."
He smiled at your surprise response. All he wanted was to impress you and he was sure not having a car would be a disappointment. But you were more different then he thought.
You both stopped at a cafe at the end of the block. "What would you like?"
"A hot chocolate and..."
"How about that giant chocolate cookie we can share." Hanbin suggested.
"Okay." You smiled.
"Hey B.I." A guy greeted as soon as you approached the counter. You recognized him from the party a few nights ago. Yunhyeong.
"Hey....can we get...." He ordered.
"You want to find us a spot?" Hanbin asked and you nodded looking around.
Hanbin looked through his wallet and Yunhyeong stopped him. "Its okay man."
"Thank you."
"She took it again?" He asked.
Hanbin nooded. "She needed to buy food."
"Doesn't Jaesun keep a jar of money in his closet?" He asked.
"Its money for his stash....He would literally kill me if I took it." Hanbin shook his head aggravated.
"Tell your mom to kick him out."
"I've tried, she said we wouldn't make it without him, he pays for the bills and shit."
"Then why is she taking your money?" Yunhyeong was aggravated with his friends living situation.
"She's afraid to ask him."
"Hey I found the perfect spot." You clinged onto his shoulder.
Hanbin just smiled sweetly.
"Here you go." Yunhyeong gave you the food. "Thank you....really."
"No problem, Hanbin remember what I said. Okay."
He nodded and went back with you.
"Your friend seems sweet." You said as you sat down.
"Oh no, did I lose you to him?" His playful attitude was back.
"Shut up." You giggled. "You didn't have to pay for me you know."
Hanbin looked down, but acted like nothing was wrong. "What kind of guy would let his date pay?"
"This isn't the 50's anymore, we can pay sometimes to." You leaned against your hand.
"Fine, you can pay for the next date." He smirked.
"Who says I'm going on another date with you." You teased.
"Ow." He held his heart in pain again.
"I'll let you know at the end." You blushed.
"How's it going so far?"
"Pretty good, but it's anyone's game." You bit your lip.
He was still holding his heart as he felt it beating faster. "You really are something else (Y/N)....You make my heart hurt."
"Stop, you're so corny."
"No really feel." He moved over to your side of the booth.
"Get out." You tried to push him.
"Feel." He grabbed your hand and he led it to his heart. He smiled seeing you blush. You felt his heart beating and you felt chills as he was so close to you. You looked up seeing his beautiful smile.
He leaned in slowly. You couldn't move as you felt his breath on yours. You knew he was going to kiss you any second and you felt like a nervous wreck. You have never had your first kiss yet and you knew you were going to be terrible. You slowly backed out and saw the confused look on his face.
"Its a little too early, don't you think?"
"You're right." He laughed. "This is what you do to me (Y/N) (Y/L/N)." He grabbed your hand and grabbed the bag with the cookie.
"Where are we going?"
"Somewhere more private." He said.
You felt more butterflies explode. "Um."
"Not in that way, I heard your mother."
He took you to the local park. "Let me push you." He said as you sat on the swing.
He pushed you gently a few times and after a few minutes he stopped you looking over you as you looked up. The tension was tight once again and you could tell he was really eager to kiss you.
"Lets go up there." You smiled as you got up quickly but something tugged on your shirt. The swing chain was caught and your shirt already started ripping.
"Oh no, you're trapped." He tried to get your shirt out. "Here I think I see-"
He tugged and quickly stopped as your shirt was tearing in half. He looked at you in shock. "I'm so sorry."
You felt a little upset but it was just a shirt. "Here." He took off his jacket and handed it over to you. You took off your shirt and threw it, leaving you in your bra.
"Look, I'm taking my clothes off for you in our first date." You teased.
It was his turn to blush.
You pulled on his jacket and continued to have your fun. You climbed to the top of the slide and watched him climb up after you. You tried to cross over to net bridge but he caught you quickly, sending you both to the floor. The net was shaky, especially with the both of you but you felt comfortable.
This time he was too quick to place his lips on yours. You stiffen up but you found yourself moving against him naturally. He took control which was all the better. Your lips were tingling. You never imagined your first kiss being like this. His hand followed up his jacket, placing them up and down your hip.
The kiss was getting more intense as the time passed. He pulled away but moved down to your neck. The butterflies in your stomach was unreal. You have never experienced anything like this before and you almost felt like you were going to fall apart. He stopped suddenly and leaned up to look at you.
"I'm sorry."
"For What?"
"Moving so quickly....I didn't even ask you how you felt."
"I'm fine Hanbin." You reassured.
He looked at his phone real quick. "Its 9:30 we better get moving." But before he put his phone away, he kissed your cheek taking a cute photo.
He helped you up and you were quick to go on your way. You shared your giant cookie on the whole way back to your house. He found out more about you and he was sweet as ever. He cared to know about your likes and dislikes that by the time you reach your house, you felt disappointed you didn't get to ask about him.
"Next time." He smiled. "Thank you for letting me take you out (Y/N)."
He leaned in closer. "Thank you for not smelling."
He laughed. "Is that going to be our thing now?"
You nodded. He leaned in more bringing his lips towards yours once again. It was hard to describe, but he really did take your breath away.
-
The next day you felt your whole way light up as you stepped in school wearing his jacket. You wanted to return it, so you made sure to have it on you.
He saw you and came up right behind you quickly. "Hey." He kissed your passionately.
"Here." You were about to take off the jacket but he stopped you. "You keep it." He smiled.
"Yo B.I." His friends were on the other end of the hall, making googly eyes at the both of you.
"I'll let you get to class, you might not want to meet these assholes." He laughed.
"Okay." You had to get to your locker anyway.
As you did you saw his friends grabbing his phone away and Hanbin tried to get it back. "Yo send this to me."
"No come on." He wanted but was being playful. You didn't know what was going on but ignored it anyway and went back to class.
As you say there waiting for class to begin you heard people getting text messages near by and start to stare at you. What was going on?
"(Y/N)?" Miyeon asked you and you grabbed her phone and saw that picture of you and Hanbin tangled in the net with your bra clearly showing out of his jacket.
This was your worst nightmare and it was all because of him.

The Freshman: 2-1
Book 2 - 1 Chapter 1: Winter in Hartfeld
Masterlist - go here for other chapters and related original fics
Disclaimer: The following are fics (adaptations from actual game chapters AND original works) to Choices: The Freshman and The Sophomore stories. It is a fictional adaptation. I (we) do not work for Pixelberry Studios, the game developer or own the rights to the characters Chris Powell, Nicole or any other IN GAME character. All of the ORIGINAL characters, storylines and events were developed for my adaptation of The Freshman story.
Comments: I enjoyed playing Choices The Freshman… and then I found this awesome group of people and their works - I’ve loved it all, very much so. Deciding that I wanted more interaction than the options allowed, I’ve gone through the first book, chapter by chapter (omg painfully slow) to follow the story (95-99% I’d say) and add to it as I felt would benefit. Now I am doing the same to Book 2 as well.
Basically, I wanted to include certain things that weren’t really full fic worthy, adding more substance to the story. However, I did add some full size fic moments also… some are included in cannon chapters and some are their own full chapters in between. I wanted to see MC and Chris through their freshman year… with more angst, fluff, sweetness, real life and overall detail. So, if you like that pairing then you’ll be satisfied, otherwise sorry James & Kaitlyn fans lol. I even added some parts from Chris’s POV, so that we have a chance to see what he’s thinking, knowing what she experienced.
NSFW moments in future chapters - Mature Readers Only Please
Paring: MC x Chris
POV: ~MC~ or ~Chris~
~MC~
Morning finally comes for the last day of Winter Break. MC is sad, but also beyond excited to get back to Hartfeld. She’s missed her family and friends while at school, but now what she misses more than anything is a single person. The thought baffles her mind, but she accepts it with a warm embrace as it just feels right.
Early yesterday, she told her mom that she wants to get to Hartfeld bright and early, which was slightly different than the original plan. That mornings text from Chris might have had something to do with it, seeing how just thinking about the text makes her stomach flip. MC assumes her mom knows why, but she doesn't care. She just wants to get there, to see her friends, and to see Chris. The only thing she wishes she could change would be to bring Max. Leaving him gets harder every time.
Her bags were packed and ready before she went to sleep the night before, so when the alarm went off this morning she was easily jumping out of bed and getting dressed within minutes. She did take a moment to send a ‘Good Morning, handsome’ text to Chris, beating him to the punch, a rare win for her over the Winter Break.
Even With all of her preparations, her mother moves slowly around the house, as if she had nowhere to go all day. MC was trying not to become furious with her, but her mother knows she wants to get back to Hartfeld. She internally grumbles about losing her truck to her dad. He had to sell his car after he lost his job, and since she wasn't using her truck during first quarter, he commandeered it. Now she was actually without wheels, something she hoping to have soon at Hartfeld. She wasn't going to give up though, she would find a way.
After a few minutes of following her mother around pointlessly, MC drops to the sofa with a huff. That's when she notices a message from Chris.
‘Morning, beautiful. Decided to sleep in huh?’ She can see the smirk on his face when he typed it. She quickly checks the time and sees that it's only just now about 9 a.m. She frowns and wonders what he means. Then it hits her. He's been on the road for hours at this point, how could she forget. He had asked her last night when she was going to leave in the morning, and now she knows why - he left in time to meet her at Hartfeld.
The crease in her brow deepens when she counts back the hours to guess at his departure time. She frowns and sends him a message. ‘You better not be texting while driving. And OMG, what time did you leave?!’
She quickly shakes her head and sends another. ‘Don't answer that. Don't text while driving. Dont read this!’
MC smacks her palm to her forehead lightly and rubs down her face when she realizes what she just did. Clearly, she’s not thinking straight. Maybe she didn't get enough sleep, or maybe she's distracted. Suddenly her phone rings, making her about jump out of her skin. She quickly lifts it to see who it is and grins when she sees Chris’s picture.
She jumps up from the sofa and bolts to her room, narrowly missing her mother as they pass in the hall. She blindly kicks her door shut with her foot as she answers the call. “You better not be driving Christopher Powell.”
She hears him laugh lightly on the other side. “I wouldn't dream of it. I promised… a long time ago. Do I need to prove it?”
MC shakes her head even though he can't see it. “No. I trust you.”
“Good. Now, what are all these texts about… you made me pull over. I have a hot date to keep.” She can hear the grin as he says the last sentence.
“What time did you leave this morning?! You should have taken your time… it's such a long drive.”
“Nah, I’ve got good coffee and let's just say I’m highly motivated to start the new quarter…”
She laughs. “Oh yeah? And why is that exactly…”
“I’ll let you assume what you will.” He laughs but gets quiet when he hears Max bark. “Are you… are you still at home?”
She sighs. “YES. My mother won’t hurry up… I’ve been ready to leave since last night.” She grumbles.
Chris laughs. “Well, that's alright. Gives me time to get settled and ready for you when you get there.”
“Ready for me, huh?” MC lowers her voice, teasing Chris.
He doesn't miss it, letting a frustrating sigh out over the phone. “MC…”
“Whaaaat…” She asks innocently.
He doesnt fall for it. “Okay, thats enough from you. I’m going to get moving again. Message me when you get close. I’ll be there in less than a minute, kay?”
She smiles, knowing he speaks the truth. “Alright… See you soon, captain.”
"I cant wait, baby… you guys drive safe.”
“You too, please.”
They hang up and MC immediately feels relieved. Even though she wanted to leave at least an hour ago, she knows it won't be long before she gets to see Chris again. She lays there for a minute before her door flies open suddenly, her mom leaning against the frame dramatically.
“I'm late, I'm late. For a very important date. No time to say ‘Hello, Goodbye’. I'm late, I'm late, I'm late!” Her mother sings, ending with a chuckle as MC throws a pillow at her head. “So ungrateful... “ She scoffs as she turns and disappears down the hall, her voice fading as she yells back. “Well, are we leaving today or what…”
MC doesn't hesitate as she jumps off her bed and runs down the hall to catch up. The drive back was pleasant, the pair discussing school, movies and books as well as other interests they share to pass the time. It makes the time fly, and MC is grateful for it. She enjoys talking with her mom, but she dearly wants to get back.
It's the first official day of winter quarter at Hartefeld. MC’s mom parks her blue SUV in one of the campus parking lots and gets out to help her with the luggage. “Brrrr! It's so cold here! Good thing I took you shopping for winter clothes, huh? Told you you’d need them.”
MC closes the passenger door and heads towards the back to meet her mom. She’s dressed in a soft grey sweater, fluffy black scarf and a dark green army style jacket with a fuzzy hood. She has knee high brown leather boots on top of her skinny jeans, helping her stay warm. Her hair's a little longer than before the break, but not enough to consider a cut quiet yet, otherwise she looks exactly the same.
As her mom opens the back hatch, MC pulls out her duffle bag and drops it on the ground, giving her mom a goofy grin. “Yup, I’m eternally grateful, Mom. And it’s not like I didn't need them at home. It’s just about as cold at our house.”
Her mom closes the door and sighs as she brushes her hands off on her pants. “Yes, I believe you are correct. I probably just miss some of the places we lived before. We had so many warmer options in the past. The were much more agreeable than our home now during the winter.” She sighs and shakes her head. “So… are you glad to be back?” MC can see the mixed happiness and sadness in her mom's eyes.
She gives her a big smile. “Of course! Partying all day, every day.” She holds her smile, trying to appear completely serious.
Her mother's mouth falls open. “Is that all you've been doing?”
MC keeps a straight face, her smile unwavering. “Well, that and petty crimes. I’m trying to stay well-rounded. It's always good to diversify you know.”
Her mother snorts at her. “Very funny. Just make sure you take full advantage of your time here, okay? These are important years.” She reaches for MC to give her a friendly pinch, but she dodges just in time, laughing at her mom.
MC sighs when she jumps far enough away, rolling her eyes. “I know, mother…”
She turns and looks around the snow-covered campus, shielding her eyes against the reflected winter sunlight on the snow. When she turns back to her mother, she receives a knowing smile.
“Let me guess… looking for that special someone?” She laughs softly.
MC shakes her head at her mother, suddenly regretting telling her more about Chris over the break. A huge grin splits her face as she looks down at her duffle. “Maybe…”
“So, is it, you know… official? I know you young people ‘don't do labels,’ but you did go to formal together. And then you guys took those two trips together, right?” Her mother prods. “I’d say that's pretty official.”
MC gives her mom a look, hoping she will drop it, as she and Chris have yet to have that type of talk. Sure they had spent hours, almost daily, talking and texting, sending snapchats and facetiming… for weeks during winter break. Not to mention their time spent together… first to California and then to the National Championship, both thanks to a Hartfeld alumni.
Her thoughts pause for a moment as details from both trips flash through her mind, her neck starting to flush towards her cheeks. There was never a good time to bring it up, at least not from her point of view so far. And even though Chris had said what he did the night before the championship, she wasn't sure if he was ready to lock down and label the thing.
“Well, if your trip to L.A. or to the championship game together is any indication, I’d say you mean a lot to him.” She flashes MC an honest smile. “Might be time to get official, MC.” She gives her daughter a playful bump, shoulder to shoulder.
Just then MC spots Chris approaching through the snow. He was right. It only took him about a minute to get there after she sent the last text. He waves at her, a big cheesy smile on his face. She immediately feels warm as his eyes roam over her body and search her face. She has been beyond excited to see him, in the flesh, again. But she had no idea it would affect her physically like this.
Her heart starts beating faster and her palms begin to sweat, even in the cool crisp air. None of it changes her smile though as it continues to grow with every step he takes towards her. She watches his chest flex under his henley, smirking to herself as she just knew he would wear it today. Chris knows how much she loves it on him, so his wearing it now is very intentional.
Her mom steps next to her and does not hide the fact that she's staring. “Wow, the pictures you showed me did not do him justice…”
MC quickly tears her eyes from Chris and glares wide eyed at her mother. “Mom! Just…be cool!”
Her mother’s eyes go wide and she covers her mouth. “Sorry!”
Chris jogs over and sweeps MC up in a big hug. She wraps her arms around his neck as he spins her around, staring into her eyes the whole time. He appears to be completely unaware of the audience next to him, having eyes only for MC since he spotted her from across the field.
MC laughs and squeezes her arms around his neck. “Whoa! Down, boy!”
Chris chuckles and gently lowers her to the ground, keeping his arms wrapped tightly around her. “Sorry… just happy to see you.” His 6’3” frame folds around her slightly shorter one, only slightly having to lower his head to make contact with her forehead as he stares into her eyes.
He loosens his grip on her, turning to face her mom, finally noticing her presence next to them. He holds out his hand and gives her a friendly smile. “Hi, you must be MC’s mom. I’m Chris.”
MC watches as her mother gushes over her… ‘Well, you can't call him your boyfriend, MC…’ she suddenly thinks to herself. She sees her mother's face become giddy as she shakes his hand.
“So handsome! And a strong grip, too…” She smirks.
MC’s face flushes. “Mom, what did I just say?! You're gonna creep the poor guy out…”
Chris turns his head to face her and tilts to the side, clearly amused. “Heh, no harm done. I certainly don't mind being called handsome.” His eyebrows pop once to show his amusement.
“I’m starting to see why MC never shut up about you the whole time she was home…” Her mom continues, causing MC’s face to flush an even deeper red as she snaps her eyes over to glare at her.
Chris turns his gaze away from her mother and back towards MC’s blushing face. “Really?” His smile expands like a sponge in water.
“I wouldn't mind hearing what she had to say, exactly…” MC watches as his mischievous eyes sink to her lips momentarily before they pop back up to hers.
MC sucks in a deep breath and grinds her teeth, quickly whipping her head towards her mother. “Agghh, stop! This meet-and-greet is officially over. Goodbye, mom.”
She starts pushing her mother towards her SUV, eager to split the two up.
“All right, I’ll leave you two alone. It was nice to finally meet you, Chris.” She waves at him as she opens her car door. “MC, make sure to call home at least once, okay?”
MC forces a huge smile and quickly responds. “I’ll do my best. Bye!”
Her mom waves one more time before getting into the SUV. “Bye, sweetheart.”
She turns to Chris and watches him flash her a cocky grin as he shoulders her duffel bag.
“C’mon, let’s get you back to the suite. Everyone’s been dying to see you.” He wraps his free arm around her shoulder, pulling her close.
“Aww… I think I need some alone time with you first…” She lifts her hand up to his chest and runs it up around his neck. She can feel him softly groan at the contact.
It has only been four days since she last saw Chris, then another three weeks before that. Well, in person anyway. They had communicated daily since they last saw each other at the dorm the day after they returned from California. She remembers how much he hated doing that, leaving her alone to wait for her ride while he began his long journey home. She made him do it though, not wanting him to get tired or have issues on the trip back. So she forced him to leave. She never let him know at the time, but she hated that part too.
He pulls her closer, nuzzling next to her ear. “I was thinking the same thing. But I’m pretty sure they’re gonna grab you as soon as you walk in the door.”
She flashes him a flirtatious smile. “I guess we’ll just have to stay out here a while longer then…” She lifts up a little to press her lips against Chris’s, running both her hands up and around his neck into his hair.
He closes his eyes and melts into her lips, only speaking briefly when they break for a breath of air. “Guess so…”
He drops her bag in the snow and leans closer to kiss her deeply, wrapping both arms around her and holding her impossibly close. After what feels like hours, they finally break apart and gaze into each other’s eyes for a long second. Chris smiles at her as he leans close to her ear, kissing her neck softly a few times.
“Let’s finish this later. Our suitemates will kill me if I keep you away from them any longer.” He quietly says into her warm skin.
MC smirks at him. “Well, I wouldn't want that.” She steps back, breaking the embrace and grabs his hand. “Let’s go say hi.”
She squeezes the same hand and he quickly scoops up her bag and flings it back onto his free shoulder. The two of them walk slowly across the campus towards their suite, enjoying their time together, hand in hand. As they cross the quad, MC spots a glamorous young woman looking around campus, clearly lost.
She makes eye contact with MC and hurries over to them as they draw nearer with an ingratiating smile on her face. “Hi there, you couldn't possibly direct me toward the faculty offices, could you?”
Chris turns to look at MC. “I think you're a little more familiar with those than I am, right, MC?”
The woman takes a step back, her mouth suddenly agape. “Hold up… you’re MC?!”
MC cautiously glances at Chris, his brow furrowed as he listens to the strange interaction. “Uh… yes.” She finally spits out, her eyebrows coming together as she studies the woman. “Do I know you?”
The stranger gives her a sickeningly sweet smile. “Not yet… but I certainly know you.”
The woman looks sidelong at Chris, a sly grin tugging at the corner of her mouth. “So… that must make you Chris.”
Chris raises an eyebrow at her, shifting uncomfortably next to MC as he gives the woman a crazy look. “How did you--”
The stranger interrupts him before he can finish as she eyes them both. “I should’ve recognized you both sooner. You're exactly like I pictured…”
She smirks. “You know what? I think I can find my own way from here. My friend just texted me directions.”
A bewildered look crosses MC’s face. “Uh… okay.”
The young woman hustles off, throwing a last lingering look over her shoulder at the stunned pair. They both watch her for a moment, waiting for her to be well out of hearing range before Chris turns his befuddled face to hers.
“Um… who was that?” He blinks a few times.
She frowns at him. “Your guess is as good as mine…”
They both watch her disappear in silence before looking at each other one last time, simultaneously shrugging and starting their journey again. They arrive at the suite to find Zack and Tyler in their usual spot on the couch, their eyes glued to the videogame on the TV.
Tyler looks up first and smiles. “Hey, MC! Long time no see!”
Zack quickly looks up and flashes her his usual grin. “Sup, doll! I’d get up and hug you and all that, but…” His eyes jump back to the screen as he tilts his head to it.
MC snorts at him and laughs. “Don't worry. I can see you're really busy.”
Chris just shakes his head and chuckles. “Have you guys moved at all today?”
Tyler suddenly looks perplexed as he tries to sort through his memories. “I think I got up to go to the bathroom? But don't quote me on that.” He purses his lips and nods.
“That's it? Respect.” MC laughs at their craziness.
Zack grins. “We’re in the zone. We’ve achieved a state of serious flow.”
Tyler bounces in his seat, clearly excited. “We’re this close to beating Yothag, Thrall of Xelia! This is the furthest we’ve ever gotten!”
MC looks at them both with endearment and a little bit of sarcasm. “I’m very happy for you both. Are Abbie and Kaitlyn here?”
Just then, Kaitlyn pops her head out from the back hallway, a big smile on her face. “MC! I thought I heard your voice… come here!”
Kaitlyn runs over and wraps her up in a tight hug, pulling her from Chris’s warm embrace. He winks at her and takes her bag down the hall to her room. Over Kaitlyn's shoulder, MC sees Abbie coming out of her room, passing Chris in the hallway, clearly excited to see her as well.
“Hey, MC!” Her shy friend waves at her with a smile.
“Abbie! Aw, it’s so good to see you guys. I really missed you over break.” She flashes them a huge smile.
Kaitlyn takes a step back and bounces a little on her toes. “Same! Now, enough small talk… Abbie has some serious gossip to share, don't you, Abbie?”
Abbie is caught off guard by Kaitlyn's sudden question. “Oh, uh…” She glances over at Tyler and tries and fails to hide a smile. “I might…”
MC can't help but let her grin spread across her face as she lowers her voice a little. “Ooh, you and Tyler? Tell me everything! I know you guys went to formal together. I assume things went pretty well after that?”
Abbie blushes. “You assume correctly.” She glances at Tyler once more before continuing. “We didn't end up meeting up over break, but we did talk online a lot. And on the phone. And on video chat.”
“Aw, Abbie! Are you two finally together for real now?” MC pauses, suddenly excited at the idea.
Abbie blushes and catches Tyler’s eye, raising her voice so he can hear. “What do you think, Tyler? Are we together?”
He briefly looks up from his game with a adorably cute grin. “Totally.”
MC suddenly taps Abbie on the arm to make her turn back to her. “Wait, video chat… no clothes or clothes?” She quietly jokes with her friend.
“Oh my god MC!” Abbie’s mouth falls open and she swats at MC.
Kaitlyn turns to grin at Abbie. “You didn't answer the question, Abbie…”
Abbie snorts at them both before she grins again. “Clothes, obviously.” She clears her throat. “It is way too soon for… that.”
Tyler perks up and looks away from his game. “Too soon for what?” He eyes her curiously.
Zack elbows him and nods towards the TV. “Dude, focus!”
Tyler looks back at the screen just as Yothag, Thrall of Xelia devours his character with one snap of his spectral jaws.
“Nooooo!” Tyler wails.
The controller falls from Zacks limp hand as he sighs and pouts. “Game over, man.” He turns to MC. “See what I have to deal with, MC? Ever since these two got back from break, they’ve been making googly eyes at each other.” He humorously glares at Tyler. “It's completely throwing off Tyler’s game!”
MC raises her eyebrow at him. “This is exactly what you wanted Zack…”
He looks at her for a moment and then shrugs, a small grin slipping across his lips. “Eh…”
MC, Kaitlyn, and Abbie sit down on the couch while Tyler powers off the game console.
“Speaking of game, hows your love life going, Zack?” MC wiggles her eyebrows as she shoulder bumps her best friend. “You and Brandon were the hottest couple at formal if I remember correctly.”
Zack quickly throws his hand up. “Oh, we’re still the hottest couple at basically any social function. Except now it's a little more ...official.” His eyebrows jump slightly at the word.
MC raises an eyebrow at him, surprised that two of her good friends are now officially seeing someone. “Seriously?”
Chris reenters the room just in time to hear Zacks news. “Nice one, man!”
Zack flashes Chris a big smile. “Thanks! He’ll be coming to our party later, actually.”
“Ooh, that reminds me. We’re throwing a party tonight. You down?” Kaitlyn turns towards MC.
MC nods at her bubbly friend, ready to start the new quarter with a great time. “Definitely.”
Just then, MC’s phone vibrates. She looks down to see a text from Professor Vasquez. ‘Looked out my window and saw you performing your characteristic woe-is-me shuffle across the quad. Report to my office ASAP.’
MC sighs and glares at her phone. “Wow, I haven't even been back five minutes…”
Her phone buzzes again, and she glances down to see a winky face emoji on screen, immediately confusing her. “What the..?”
She almost instantly receives another text. ‘Disregard. New phone. I’m not used to this contemptible touch screen technology.’
Abbie notices the change in her mood and frowns a little. “Everything okay, MC?”
MC sighs. “Only if you define ‘okay’ as Vasquez suddenly having the ability to text me orders at all hours of the day…”
She shakes her head and stands. “I guess I’d better go see what he wants. See you guys later…”
As she heads towards the door, Chris follows, taking her hand in his. “Wait up just one sec, MC…” He lightly tugs on her hand to slow her down.
She turns and looks into his eyes, curious. “What’s up?”
“I know Vasquez is expecting you and all, but… I was thinking maybe I could walk you over?” He holds her gaze and gives her a small smile.
“Plus, there’s some kind of winter festival going down in the park… There’ll be hot cocoa, live music, chestnuts roasting on an open fire…” His grin grows.
“Sounds pretty romantic, right? And we still haven't had much of a chance to catch up…” He gives her hand a gentle squeeze and rubs his thumb over her knuckles slowly his eyes searching hers.
She looks at him for a moment, watching the corner of his lip curl higher. The look he's giving her makes her toes tingle. She doesn't want to go to see Vasquez, she wants to be with Chris, wherever that is. Especially when he gives her that look. Her heart beats harder in response as a small smile appears on her lips.
“Okay. Let’s go check out the festival. I’ve never said no to hot cocoa, and I’m not about to start.” She takes a step closer to him. “And… you're pretty cool, too.”
“I’ll take it.” He grins and shifts closer, running his free hand around the side of her neck, his thumb running across the edge of her jaw as he leans in for a soft kiss.
They separate only to put their jackets and shoes on before heading outside. Once downstairs and outside of the dorm, the pair cross the quad to the park. Her arm is hooked through his,  while she snuggles close in the crisp air. They stop by the frozen fountain and look down at the glistening ice. Chris turns to MC and grins as the smell of roasting chestnuts and hot cocoa reaches them both.
“It seems like a long time ago since we had a slip ‘n slide set up here.” MC stares into the ice as the memories of their first day at Hartfeld float through her mind; the first day she met all of her amazing new friends. The first day she met Chris.
“Yeah. The campus looks so different.” Chris takes a long deep breath and closes his eyes for a moment, absorbing the wonderful aromas.
MC watches him as they stand there for a moment longer before he opens his eyes and they begin to slowly walk down the main path. She has learned that this is his favorite time of year, as it was one subject they thoroughly covered during their winter break conversations. She loves that he gets so excited about the holidays, spending time with his family and friends and just the overall magic of this time of year.
While she has a good time with her own friends and family, after meeting the guys on the championship trip, MC almost wishes she could have been with him in Cherryfield over the last few weeks. His friends seem like great people from everything she’s seen so far. And if Chris is that close to them, she knows they are. Ryan and Ethan already feel like her best friends.
Then there is his family, who sound beyond adorable from all the random things Chris had told her over the break. She wants to meet them so badly, because she knows that it will help her see an entirely new level to Chris.
He finally opens his eyes and tilts his head to look into hers. “Aren't you glad you decided to come with me?”
She can't help but stare back, his deep blues pulling her in. “Definitely.”
MC glances down at the snowy path, reflecting on her memories. “I guess a lot has changed since fall quarter.” She speaks softly.
~Chris~
Chris grins at her when she looks up. “Not everything.” Chris shifts their arms to hold her hand in his, before leading her over to a nearby booth, where a student volunteer fills two styrofoam cups with hot chocolate and hands them roasted chestnuts.
Chris lets go of MC’s hand to quickly grab the offered cups and stuff the bag in his pocket. “Thanks man.”
He turns to MC and hands her a cup before they continue their walk. Clutching their new steaming cups of hot cocoa, MC and Chris walk further into the park. The soft strains of holiday music fading into the distance as they settle onto a private bench.
Chris blows onto his hot cocoa softly as he watches MC, his eyes bright with enjoyment. She licks her lips in between sips, and he watches intently. He wants to be that cup of hot chocolate right now. He wants to taste her lips, knowing they would be doubly sweet with the chocolate on them. She sees him staring and blushes a little before turning her eyes away for a moment.
“Mmm… maybe it's just because I’m freezing, but this is the best thing I’ve ever tasted.” MC clutches the cup tightly between her hands, her eyes shifting up to his briefly before she turns them away again, her expression fun and flirty.
“If you’re cold, it's the perfect time for me to give you your Christmas gift.” Chris reaches into his back pocket and produces a crinkled package. “I, uh, wrapped it myself.” He chuckles.
He hands it to MC with a lopsided grin. She holds it close for a moment, looking into his happy eyes as she takes in a long breath. She quickly looks down and tears open the paper to reveal a pair of soft, wool gloves.
“Wow… these are the softest gloves I’ve ever owned! And they’re just the right size...” She looks over to him after she puts them on, clearly impressed with how perfect they are.
“I can't take all of the credit for that.” Chris laughs. “I got them at the clothing shop where my mom works… I showed her a picture of you, and she was able to guess your size.”
He watches her face as she hears his words. He wants her to know that he’s told his mom about her, that he's confident in his feelings to not only tell his mom about her, but ask for input.
~MC~
MC’s face warms as she realizes that Chris must have talked about her to his mom after they returned from Nationals. “That’s a pretty neat trick.”
He flashes her a soft smile. “I’ll tell her you said that.”
“I didn't realize your mom works in a clothing store. I haven't really heard that many stories about your life back home…” She looks up at him sweetly, indirectly asking him for more information as curiosity gets the best of her.
“I... “ Chris frowns suddenly. “I don't like to talk about it. But, I’ll tell you anything you want to know.” He stands and offers his arm to MC.
She happily takes it and they start walking slowly down the path. As they take a few silent steps she wonders if she’s hit a nerve. He clearly isn't excited to share something, but she has no idea what it is.
She gives him a small smile, carefully choosing her words as to hopefully avoid a sore spot. “What about your family?”
Chris looks down to the ground as he begins to answer her question. “Let’s see… there’s me. My mom. My brother Kyle is 10, and my sister Jo is 8.”
MC smiles. She remembers him talking about them some over the break, but he never went into much detail. She wonders why he is so guarded. “They seem pretty awesome...”
He turns his eyes to hers, his own a little melancholy although he gives her a small smile. “They really are.”
“So you had a good break?” She raises her eyebrows as she squeezes his arm, trying to be supportive.
“It was great to see my family. It always is. I gave my little sister a game ball signed by the whole team…” He begins to chuckle. “She and my little brother promptly went outside to play with it in the snow.”
“Sounds like she's a trouble.” MC laughs.
He shakes his head and grins through a scoff. “You don't know the half of it.”
MC hesitates, sensing some tension about the one person left unmentioned. “Your dad--”
Chris clears his throat and looks up and down the path to an unknown distance. “Was a long haul trucker.”
MC’s voice becomes quiet as she looks over at him carefully, unsure what he means. “‘Was’?”
“Let’s…” Chris sighs and shakes his head, quickly replacing his frown with his normal happy smile. “...not get into that today. It’s a happy day.”
He turns to look deep into her eyes, his plea obvious inside them. “My mom, Kyle, and Jo are everything to me.”
She gives him an understanding nod and rubs his upper arm. “Can you tell me more about your hometown?”
He nods, happy to oblige. “Cherryfield, Maine. The blueberry capital of the world.”
She blinks a few times. “So why is it called… nevermind. Wait, is that why you like blueberries so much?” She grins at him, receiving the same in return as they both recall their strong blueberry muffin bond.
“Maybe?” He laughs.
“I’d love to take you there sometime. Its beautiful…” He pauses and looks away, almost as if ashamed. “...but also dirt poor. There’s the high school, a tiny downtown, and exactly two restaurants.”
He turns to look at MC, a hint of sadness swimming in his eyes. “If I couldn't throw a football, I’d probably still be there, scraping by like most of the guys I went to school with. I’m not going to lie. It was hard to be back home. Now that I’ve seen more of the world, my town looks awfully small. It’s beautiful, of course… but the people are dirt poor, and mostly unhappy.”
He stays quiet for a moment as he searches her face. It doesn't take long for his grin to grow as he looks at her. “And… of course, I missed you.”
“You did, huh?” She tilts her head, curious about his statement.
“What’s with the slack jaw?” He raises an eyebrow at her.
She clears her throat. “It’s just… I feel like I know you so well in certain ways. The two of us have had some uh, great… moments together…”
She feels her face flush warm. “But… we still don't know much about each other's past.” Her eyes flick back and forth across his eyes, trying to learn whatever she can.
Chris lets out a long sigh and looks forward again, away from her searching eyes. “Trust me, it’s not important. My past is the least interesting thing about me.”
“I’m sure that's not true, Chris.” She playfully bumps him as they walk, hoping to get some type of reaction from his suddenly stoic demeanor. “But for the sake of enjoying this date, I’m going to let you off the hook for now.”
~Chris~
When he turns to look at her with a grin she winks at him and he laughs. “Lucky me.” He watches MC, his eyes bright with enjoyment.
She can't help but giggle at his expression. “What are you smiling about?”
He clears his throat and looks away bashfully for a second before he musters up the courage to look back into her eyes and hold the gaze this time. “I guess I’m just happy. I told you. I uh…” He reaches over and covers her smaller hand with his much his larger and warmer one before he shrugs slightly. “I just… missed you.”
“We talked or whatever, like everyday… ” She gives him a curious look before she continues,
“And then there was Nationals…” They both grin cheekily at each other, causing her to full on blush and look down at their connected hands as he lets out a soft laugh.
“Okay, I missed you, too. Winter break was too long. Even with the trip last week...” She looks up and bites her lower lip as she locks eyes with him.
“Yeah I know, we did talk… and text… and FaceTime a little…” He shakes his head and laughs, his entire body shifting with embarrassment. “But it’s not the same.”
He squeezes her hand and clears his throat before changing the subject. “Anyway, what kind of stuff did you do the rest of the time?”
She looks at him for a few seconds, watching as he forces his body to relax. “Hmm, I caught up with my high school friends some, but you knew that. There were some parties… and we watched an old movie that we can't seem to let go.” She laughs. “Spent time with the family of course.”
“How did that go? Is everyone doing good?” Chris inquires with sincerity.
MC lets out a weak laugh. “It was… mostly good.” She frowns a little. “Well, the job I told you that my dad got… it was only temporary. He still hasn't found permanent work, but my mom was able to get her old job back at least.”
Chris frowns as he picks up on her demeanor. “Well, that’s good, right?”
She gives him a small smile. “Yeah… but it’s just enough to support them. She’s not exactly making college tuition money. They sold his car and had to take my little truck for now too, so he can continue looking for work.”
He takes his hand off hers to wrap his arm across her shoulders and pull her close, kissing her on the temple. “I hate to hear that, I’m sorry. But you still have Vasquez though, right?”
“Yeah… right.” She frowns.
Chris pulls her even closer, squeezing her upper arm with the hand he wrapped around her shoulders. He leans over and lays his forehead against her temple before he softly speaks. “It will be okay, MC. I promise. Just like first quarter, we will figure it out.”
She lets out a long sigh. “Thanks Chris. Sorry for getting mopey…”
He winks at her when he straightens up and she looks into his eyes. “No reason to be sorry.”
MC quickly thinks of something else to change the subject. “So, besides what I saw myself… how was your break? Did your family have a good Christmas?”
He laughs as memories begin to cut across his thoughts. “Yeah, you could say that.”
“Do you have any pictures?” She looks at him hopefully.
He raises his eyebrow and laughs. “Ayuh, I have a few…” He pulls out his phone and swipes through his photo stream.
“Here’s my brother and sister… making dinner on Christmas Eve.” He grins as he shows her the picture he took with them behind him, selfie style.
MC smiles as he recalls that night and the mess they made. She listens to him intently, smiling hard at his faint accent as he reviews the events of the night.
He turns to see her face and stops, his left eyebrow arching up sharply. “What?”
Chris then lets out a short knowing laugh. “Are you laughing at the way I speak again…”
She shakes her head. “I’m not laughing. I love it.”
“Oh, you love it…” He smirks at her as she blushes after realizing her word choice.
She tries to shrug it off, making him feel butterflies for a moment as he watches her backpedal hard. He decides that she can bring up his accent anytime as long as she continues to look at him the same way.
“Well, my family doesn't really have any accent. We’ve moved around too much over the years and they came from all over. So I uh, I think yours is... neat.”
He pulls her close. “See, I think that's neat. You're a chameleon. You can go anywhere and blend in. No one will ask you where you're from.”
“It's really not that obvious, yanno… Sorry if I’m bothering you.” She gives him a sweet half smile-frown.
“You could never bother me, MC. I love that you like to listen to my voice…” He says it in a slow, husky tone as he gives her a flirty look, making her laugh again.
He instantly knows that her laugh is and will always be, his favorite sound. Something he will forever love to hear daily. He takes the moment to nuzzle into her neck right near her ear, receiving a shiver in response, making his lower abdomen tighten in return, sliding his arm from her shoulders down around her waist as they slowly continue to stroll down the path.
~MC~
She asks to see more pictures and he obliges, scrolling through more images of his family and of course, all of his friends. Some she recognizes from FaceTime calls and from their trip to the championship. She can’t wait to meet the others and hang out with Ryan and Ethan again.
He stops on a particular picture when MC puts her hand on his. “Oh my god… you guys are so cute.”
She studies a picture Chris tells her his mom took. It’s of Chris and his siblings on the couch after they had fallen asleep together. Chris in the middle with his head leaning slightly over the back, his mouth slightly open because of the odd angle. His brother Kyle is on his right, leaning on Chris’s shoulder. His sister Jo is tucked under his arm on his left, snuggled up as close as she could possibly get with his arm wrapped protectively around her. All three are passed out, bundled tightly together, the Christmas tree sparkling in a blur behind them.
She looks up and sees Chris studying her face, a small smile on his lips. “I would love for you to meet them someday. They are great kids. Pretty sure they are going to make me look bad as they grow up…” He lets out a hearty laugh.
She shakes her head at him and pulls his arm tighter around her waist. “I don't think that's actually possible.”
A sad look crosses his face for a moment but he pushes it away and lets out a huff of air. “Heh. Yeah…”
MC picks up on his mood shift and nudges him slightly with her shoulder. He gives her a quick grin and he starts scrolling again. She jumps next to him suddenly.
“Wait! Go back!” She demands, almost knocking the phone from his hand.
He stops and gives her an odd look before he slowly starts scrolling through his pictures backwards. When he pulls up a particular shot she lunges at his phone, excitedly grabbing it with both hands. She studies the picture with wide eyes, etching it into her memory as much as possible.
“Who took this?” She holds it up to him and he laughs and looks away, a faint red tint creeping up his neck.
“Uh, Jo did… My little sis-ta.” He smirks as he leans closer and purposefully enunciates the way he says sister as MC giggles and continues to evaluate the picture.
The picture is of Chris, on a shore in Maine during a sunrise. He’s facing the barely visible sun as it creeps into view, lighting his front while the rest of him remains in a dark shadow, creating drastic contrast. His sister must have snuck up on him to take the picture, because his focus is way off into the distance, almost like he's searching for the sun itself. He appears deep in thought, but happy at the same time. She finally looks up and finds him studying her face again. This time with an odd look on his own.
Tumblr media
 “What?” She asks apprehensively.
He tilts his head. “Just curious… of what you're thinking about?”
She looks back at the picture, still holding his phone in her hands. “I guess I’m wondering, what you were thinking of here. How she managed to sneak up on you like that. It must have been something…” She looks over at him. “Do you remember?”
~Chris~
Chris lets out a small laugh. “Ayuh, I remember.” He lays on a thick accent to purposefully make her smile again while he stalls for a moment, trying to decide how, or possibly if he should answer truthfully. “Jo kept trying to get me to tell her for the rest of break after she took it. But I never told her...”
MC must sense his hesitation because she scrambles to retract her question. “It’s okay, if you um… If you don't want to say. I just think it's a nice picture…” She quickly hands him his phone and shyly looks forward, avoiding his heated gaze.
Chris stops walking then, tugging her until she stops as well from his arm wrapped around her waist. He holds the phone up in front of his face to study the picture for a moment before he shifts it directly into MC’s line of sight. He tilts his head towards her slightly, his arm tightly wrapped around her, before he speaks.
“I don't mind. If you really want to know.” He looks at her as he speaks slowly. “I was thinking of you.” He watches her swallow hard, absorbing what he just said about the picture.
She eventually turns to look at him, her voice quiet and soft. “Can I have it?”
Chris smiles warmly at her, his eyes crinkling at the corners as his happiness grows. “Of course.”
He pulls his phone back and sends her the image through text. MC smiles as she hears her phone ding with the message notification.
She unwraps herself from his arm and grabs his hand before pulling him into the snowy quad. “Come on. We’re at a winter fair! let's do some winter stuff.”
Chris gestures to a group of students knee deep in the thickest snow banks in the area. “How about we build a snowman?”
She nods and stops to look at them before turning to him. “Sure thing… but I’m fresh out of magic top hats.”
He laughs, instantly getting the reference. “Gah, I love that movie.” He chuckles. “Guess we’ll have to use our imaginations instead.” Chris hunkers down and starts packing snow together.
MC quickly kneels beside him to help. “We can use two of the chestnuts for his eyes! We can name him… Mr. Chestnut.”
Chris doesn't even try to hide his laughter, enjoying her goofy sense of humor. “Wow. How creative.”
He effortlessly lifts two sizable balls of snow onto the largest, stacking them perfectly. He watches her as she moves around the snowman, her face soft and happy, making his chest swell.
MC gives him a mock pout. “Hey! You’re going to hurt his feelings!” She packs snow between the sections, securing the snowman’s upper body and head.
Chris returns with a mock apology as he pats the snowman on the head. “Aw. Poor guy. Sorry, Mr. Chestnut.”
~MC~
MC notices Chris shivering slightly as he finishes putting the finishing touches on the snowman with his bare hands. She suddenly feels horrible.
“I didn't realize it since I was wearing gloves… but your hands must be freezing! Maybe you can wear my gloves?” She quickly takes them off and hands them to Chris.
He looks at her thankfully but gives her a sweet smile from the offer. “But these gloves are the perfect size for you. My big hands won't even come close to fitting.” He gives her a wink.
MC frowns. “Oh, yeah.”
She shakes her head and sighs, thinking of another way to warm him.
Chris gently grabs her wrists and puts the gloves back in her hands. “Please put these back on. I couldn't stand to watch you shiver. Even for a second.”
MC blushes as he holds her gaze with a very serious look, daring her to disobey. She smiles and shakes her head while she puts them back on, racking her brain for another solution. Then it hits her and she takes a step closer to him.
“Quick! Put your hands inside my coat.” She unbuttons her jacket and opens it to him as she eliminates all the space between them.
Chris looks at her with concern. “Are you sure?”
MC frowns at him and raises her voice slightly, very worried about his hands. “Just do it!”
Chris snaps to and reaches under her coat around her body, his icy hands touch her warm skin as they run along her waist, pulling the hem of her shirt up. He grimaces as she feels his hands pull the warmth from her soft skin almost instantly.
MC gasps as if the air was sucked straight from her lungs at the ice cold contact. “So… c-cold!”
Chris flinches and begins to remove his hands quickly. “You told me to do this!”
She swiftly grabs his retreating hands through her jacket and holds them to her skin as she shudders for a moment, trying to focus on something other than his frozen digits. “I… I know.”
She takes a few breaths in and out, clenching her eyes shut for a moment before she looks up to meet his very concerned eyes. She shakes her head to let him know it is okay and leans in, wrapping him with her own arms, holding them together chest to chest. He sighs and leans his cheek against her’s as they stand like that for a few minutes, his hands finally starting to warm up. She lets out a light laugh once she can start to feel his fingers move again, no longer the ice sculptures they were just minutes prior. She leans back and looks into his eyes, now softer but still full of concern.
“This is… actually starting to feel nice.” She feels Chris relax against her finally, looking at her somewhat apologetically.
~Chris~
She sucks in a quick breath as he begins to move his fingers around under her shirt, familiarizing themselves with her soft skin again. She looks deep into his eyes as Chris continues to blindly explore. He struggles not to react to the memories that start to pop into his head. Memories of the last time he touched her like this in his hotel room only a few days prior.
“I almost forgot how much I missed you touching me.” A small grin cracks across his face as she continues, “Almost.”
Chris pulls his now normalized hands out from under MC’s jacket and away from her warm skin, knowing he can't continue down this path here and now. He helps her button her jacket again as she struggles with her new gloves. She gives up with a huff and stands there, watching him dutifully button each one with a smirk, until she is warm and cozy again.
“Let’s get some more cocoa. It will help warm us up.” Chris grabs her hand and they both run back to the cocoa stand for fresh cups.
Chris takes a long sip after blowing across the top a little. “That feels so… good…” He sighs and cherishes the warm cup in his hands.
MC watches him over her own cup as she takes a sip as well. “Careful. You’re going to make me jealous of a cocoa cup.”
He lowers the cup and gives her a sultry look. “Maybe you should be.”
They both start softly laughing as they keep eye contact while finishing their cocoa, each peering over their steaming paper cups and drinking through playful grins. After a few minutes they finish their second cups and toss them in the trash as they pass by on their walk. They end up near the string quartet that begins to play a winter waltz as they move to a quieter part of the path.
Chris slows down and turns towards her, making her stop as well. He lightly cups her cheek in his hand and rubs his thumb over her bottom lip as he gazes into her eyes. His voice becomes very low as his expression turns serious.
“When I got home after nationals, I had a nightmare, you know…” He swallows hard and takes a deep breath. “In it, I showed up here today, and you didn't exist. Everything we’d shared last quarter and over the break… it had only been an illusion.”
He squeezes her hand, trying to force the panicky feeling from his body. Even thinking about it now was making him feel like it just happened, that she isn't real even though he’s holding her right now. He takes a deep breath.
“I woke up in a cold sweat, picked up my phone, and scrolled through my photos until I found one of you.” Chris gives her a weak smile.
~MC~
“Aww, Chris…” MC smiles softly at him, feeling the anxiety rolling off him, making her chest tighten as he continues.
“And then I knew you were real. And I took a deep breath and went back to bed.” He lets out a held breath of air, his bangs moving a little from the force.
He hesitates for a moment before suddenly leaning in and kissing her hard on the lips, his stubble lightly caressing her cheek. She only stays stunned for a fraction of a second from his swift invasion of her lips, quickly giving in and forcefully kissing him back in return. She can feel the power behind his kiss, his need to prove that she’s real and actually here, in his arms. So she gives it to him.
She lets him in when he asks, his tongue soft but demanding with hers. She matches his exuberance as he becomes excited with her level of participation, and she makes sure he knows it is real. She reaches up behind his neck, holding him close to her with one hand and running her fingers through the hair on the base of his neck with the other. When he pulls back, his eyes are a familiar deep blue, cutting straight through her with raw intensity.
“We… should find somewhere… private.” Chris holds her close, leaning his forehead to hers, trying to slow his breathing as he closes his eyes, forcing himself to focus.
She does the same, forcing herself to breathe slowly, trying to lower her elevated heart rate while her head spins. They hold each other tightly for a while, almost as if they are afraid they might disappear.
Disrupting their moment, MC’s phone beeps again with another text. She sighs and almost pitches it down the snowy path, knowing exactly who it is without looking. She squeezes it tightly before Chris gently grabs her hands with soft pressure, silently asking her to let go and relax.
She looks to him then, finding his focused stare as he gives her a reassuring hug. “Later tonight. We’ll make up for lost time. I promise.”
He gives her an excited smile. “I’m going to hold you to that.”
They walk back towards the quad hand in hand. They split off at a certain point on the path, each going their separate ways; Chris back to the suite and MC towards Vasquez’s office. Chris doesn't let her leave without a quick kiss to her temple as he hugs her close. MC swears she can still feel tension in him and makes a mental note to talk to him later. He glances over his shoulder at her one last time just when she does the same to him. They both smile warmly before turning back towards their destinations.
As MC walks into Vasquez’s office she is immediately addressed by the professor. “MC. What took you so long? I’ve been waiting for… Hrrrk.”
He suddenly bends over and coughs into a handkerchief. When he pulls it away, she notices a red spot bleeding through the white cloth. He quickly stuffs the handkerchief in his pocket before James can see it. James does however hear the cough and consequently finds the professor folded over.
Concern instantly covers his face. “Professor, are you--”
Vasquez quickly cuts him off. “I’m fine. James, could you get me a glass of water?”
James lingers for a moment, his eyes glancing back and forth between the professor and MC. He then frowns before nodding and walking out of the room.
MC frowns at Professor Vasquez when his eyes meet hers. “You need to tell him.”
He glares at her. “Don't you dare try to tell me what I need to do. You need to remember who's in charge here… who holds your future in the palm of his hands.”
“Well… I’m sorry.” She sighs, feeling defeated from this situation.
He stands up straighter and eyes her suspiciously. “Interesting. Last quarter, you would have barked back some insult at me. Perhaps you’re capable of evolving as a character.”
Her face scrunches up in irritation. “I’m not a character. I’m a person.”
He lets out a small chuckle. “Whatever you say…” He clears his throat and looks back down at his desk. “Back to your question. I’ll tell James when the moment is right.”
She rolls her eyes and frowns. “You mean when it causes the most drama?”
He snorts at her. “No… when I’m ready.”
Just then, the office door bursts open, and the young woman from before enters with James at her heels.
“Professor Vasquez. How nice to finally meet you in person.” She extends her hand towards him. “Let me introduce myself… I’m Yasmin Udoka.”
James quickly comes around her and places himself between them. “I’m sorry, Professor. I tried to tell her you were busy, but--”
Yasmin waves him away. “It’s my job to push for what I want, James. It’s what makes me the best agent in Manhattan.”
Professor Vasquez looks at her less than amused. “I’m afraid you're about forty years too late to sign me. I already have an agent, Charles Wallace!”
She smiles sweetly at him. “Charlie retired on Tuesday. I took over his client list and jumped on the first flight here. I used the flight to catch up on your latest book. Very provocative stuff. Especially the MC character.”
MC quickly turns to glare at the professor. “Vasquez! You actually named your character MC?”
He scoffs at her. “You should be grateful! You’re being immortalized in a work of classic literature!”
Yasmin smiles at MC in a way she doesn't like. “If half the stories I read are true, you’ve had quite an interesting freshman year so far…”
MC’s eyes narrow a little. “Oh yeah? What exactly did he write about me?”
Yasmin's smile becomes even more twisted and unappealing to MC. “Oh, I wish I could tell you, but I couldn't possibly violate Vasquez’s trust like that.”
MC glares at them both. “I guess I’ll just have to wait for the book to come out like everyone else…”
Professor Vasquez ignores her response. “On to business. What do you want, Yasmin?”
“First, a little bookkeeping We need to renew publication rights for Winter in July. That includes going digital! I’m afraid no one reads print anymore, dear…” She holds her hand up to look at her nails.
Vasquez quickly snaps his eyes up from his desk and glares at her. “Don't patronize me. Just because our entire culture’s sinking into a morass of shallow self-absorption doesn’t mean I have to help the slide.”
She walks over towards his desk, digging in her bag for a stack of papers. “All I need is your signature, Enrique. Then you can go back to your ivory tower and sneer all you want.” She holds the document out across his desk.
“I… I’m not ready to sign. I need to think about it.” He gruffly replies, quickly looking away from her extended hand.
She pulls it back towards her, taken by surprise. “What’s there to think about? Your book sales could double or even triple if we release Winter in July on digital platforms.”
MC and James share a worried look from their places on opposite sides of the room. They already know why the professor doesn't want to sign, not to mention that he will probably get upset if she keeps pushing.
“I said I need to think about it, okay? As far as I’m concerned, the matter is closed for discussion.” He gives Yasmin a serious glare. “I’d rather focus on finishing The Freshman. Hopefully it will serve as a cautionary tale to today's youth.”
MC sneers at him from her spot in the room. “Yeah… a cautionary tale. As in… never trust your professor.”
“You’ve clearly misidentified the theme of my book, MC. Whether you trust me or not is a moot point. You have to work for me.” He looks at her, his face devoid of emotion.
“So it’s a book about the way millennials are subjugated by a corrupt power structure set up by your generation?” She grinds out between clenched teeth.
“Interesting take. I like that angle…” Professor Vasquez smirks. “But… it still ignores the main character’s central flaws.”
“What flaws? I bet you can't even come up with one example.” MC is tired of holding back.
After being ridiculed as nothing other than a character in his book, pure substance for his story, she's had enough. Now she's seething.
“Actually, I’ve got half a book’s worth of examples. And by the end of the year, I should have enough to finish this thing. He gives her a haughty smile.
Yasmin frowns. “I take that to mean, you don't have any more pages for me?”
“Actually… I’m getting an idea for my next chapter now… of course, this is going to require a bit of ‘help’ from MC and James.”
James takes a step back, his face clearly showing his disagreement with the plan. “Whoa, whoa, whoa. Leave me out of this. I’m your mentee, not your puppet.”
He flashes MC an apologetic smile as he realizes what he just said. She rolls her eyes and crosses her arms as she glares at the professor.
Vasquez gives him an eerie smile. “Hear me out.” James and MC share worried looks.
“There’s a nice benefit in this for you, if you play your cards right.” He clears his throat. “Here’s my proposal: MC is going to put on James’s play, here on campus, next week.”
The other three all look at each other with shocked confused glances.
“And Yasmin here is going to watch. If she likes it, she’ll take James on as a client.” Professor Vasquez finishes with enthusiasm as MC and James stare at each other in shock.
Yasmin’s eyebrows lift as her eyes widen with surprise. “I will?”
“Think of the drama! James’s future on the line… an agent out to land her first client after inheriting a bunch of literary dinosaurs… And at the center of it all, a girl who risks losing her scholarship and getting thrown out of school.” He chuckles to himself as his eyes lock with MC’s.
Yasmin grins. “That does sound compelling. Very well, then. I accept.”
They shake hands over his desk before she turns towards James. “I’ll look forward to watching your play, Mr. Ashton. It had better be worth my time.”
MC takes a step forward, her expression showing her concern. “How am I supposed to put on a play just like that? I don’t even know any actors!”
Professor Vasquez gives her a blank look. “Oh, you won't be using actors, MC… The stars of this play will be a few of my favorite characters… you and your friends.” His eyes narrow as his grin grows.

i thought i’d give a little bit of a backround description to my ocs (well, at least publicly post about them for the first time ever) as well as a little bit of info for my story.
im kinda nervous making this post because i just hold this concept and characters VERY CLOSE to my heart. this is something i’ve been developing and working on since i was 12 years old, and i guess i can get a little over-protective of it.
i dont really trust anyone enough to tell my ideas to (mostly out of fear and unconfidence in myself) but i figured, its something i need to let out eventually, and this is probably the best format to do so. so here goes, i’ll post this under a read more
this is a very brief description of things, so there’s a lot that im leaving out, but i wanted to make this simplified anyway:
a little bit of info on the setting of my story; the story starts out in New York City. it takes place in the year 2085, in a dystopian-like future, 28 years after a mysterious alien-like creature, dubbed by the public as “lotus eaters” show up and leach onto humans, ultimately killing and possessing them as cannibalistic zombies. over time, humans have slowly learned to adapt with them, such as never going outside at night time (when they roam around) safeguarding their homes, etc. despite this, they still baffle scientists, such as their origins and behaviors. there’s also been a significant human population decline since their appearance.
from all of this, a small subculture of young, typically orphaned street gangs have emerged, with most of them living amongst the major cities. here’s a brief description and backround of one of these gangs and their members:
Marley: DOB: May 9th, 2068 (age 17)
Marley is the oldest and most rational of the group. she doesnt lose her temper nearly as much as the others, and shes almost always shown to have a very calm demeanor, talking with a very gentle voice. she always observes situations thoroughly before coming to a conclusion, which can be annoying to the others when they’re in a desperate situation and would rather act fast. however, this makes her a very logical person. despite this, deep down inside behind her calming nature, she can hold a deep rage that could be set off only in intense situations, like if her friends are getting severely hurt. this can cause her to be in an irrational state of violent hatred. Marley is the only one who goes out of her way to get an education. in her free time, she does homework, and she shows up at her local high school once a week to turn it all in.
fun facts: Marley has light brown, short hair that curls lightly around her face. shes asexual, and lacks having any sort of romantic feelings, only strong platonic feelings for her friends, who are like a family to her. her father was a well-known, respected scientist who hid her existence from the world in order to protect her from people who condemned him and his research.
Roxanne: DOB: July 12th, 2069 (age 16)
Roxanne is the most emotional and stubborn of the group. this causes her to act out very fast, and going into immediate “fight mode” when in battle. shes very brash and isint afraid to speak whats on her mind, no matter how obscene her thoughts may be. however, she cares deeply for her friends, and will do anything to protect any of them. she has a strong, protective, “motherly instinct” when it comes to them. shes terrified of the ones she loves abandoning her, due in part to the trauma caused from her mother dying when she was 7. she’s afraid of losing anyone else, so she latches on to the ones she cares about, but yet is afraid to get close with anyone new.
fun facts: Roxanne is half chinese, half european. she has noticeably long natural eyelashes. its implied a few times that shes bisexual. she does have an ex boyfriend, named Curtis, who she still cares for deeply. her red diamond necklace she wears around her neck belonged to her mother, who gave it to her before she died. it’s the only memento she has of her mom, and she wears it at all times in order to never forget her. she is especially fond of Rhapsody, whom she thinks of as if she were her daughter. shes extremely protective of her. her favorite food is flan.
Maggie: DOB: January 28th, 2070 (age 15)
Maggie has a rather rambunctious, yet wise-cracking personality. shes never afraid to lighten up the mood, or to point out the obvious in situations. despite this, she can become paranoid very easily, and often acts frantic and irrational when in such a state. she’s especially doting of May, her twin sister. her and May were in a severe house fire, which damaged half of her lower body below her neck. her and May were the only survivors. both their parents, older sister and younger brother were all killed. because of this, she thinks of May as her “other half” and would feel incomplete and empty as a person if she werent around.
fun facts: Maggie is the older twin of May, by one minute. after she joined the gang, she stylized her hair as a beehive, and dyed her naturally blonde hair blue. she covers up most of her burn scars with her clothes, however, her left hand is completely scarred and exposed.
May: DOB: January 28th, 2070 (age 15)
May is the complete opposite of her sister. she’s the kind of person that tries to avoid conflict as much as possible, and is not the leader type. she prefers to stay in the backround and observe others without taking on the action of responsibility. this is in due to her low self esteem and confidence she has in herself. despite how she feels of herself, shes very trustworthy to everyone, and is always there to protect one of her friends back. shes also noteworthy for somehow always being able to detect danger, such as if an arrow was being shot out of nowhere, she could move her, or anyone, out of harms way. due to the fire disaster she went through, her right side of her face is completely damaged, including her eye. although shes not completely blind, her vision in her right eye is very blurred. her appearance adds nothing but more fuel for her already low opinion of herself. she is also very doting on Maggie, for the same reasons.
fun facts: May is one minute younger than Maggie. she’s kept her natural blonde hair color, but wears it in a dreadlock-like style. she uses her hair to completely cover the damaged side of her face. she wears a huge, purple beanie-like hat that reaches all the way from the top of her head, to almost completely covering her back.
Rhapsody: DOB: December 21st, 2072 (age 12 going on 13)
Rhapsody still has the typical curious attitude of a little kid. due to her poor upbringing, she’s a rather “slow” person, and never even learned how to read. she can become overwhelmed in confusing situations, and react nervously to them. she’s notable for being extremely tall (standing at 5′10) and “mature” looking for her age, which often times gets her mistaken for being much older than she really is. this can cause stress and confusion to her, making her a rather “awkward” characters. despite this, she’s shown to be very sly and have a tricky side to her, especially in combat. she shows very little remorse for enemies, and often times makes sure they die slow and painful deaths. this paints a disturbing, masochist-type side to her usual sweet and cheerful attitude.
fun facts: Rhapsody is the tallest of the five girls, and most “well endowed” despite being the youngest. she is equally as fond of Roxanne, since they grew up with each other and knew each other the longest, since after Roxannes mother died. she has long, sandy blonde hair that she wears in a high ponytail with a scrunchie. she’s noteworthy for being especially skilled with swords in battle. she loves stuffed animals.

How to answer the most common nutrition questions like a boss: A cheat sheet for helping anyone hone their eating habits.
If you love nutrition, health, and fitness — or you’re already a professional in one of these fields — you probably get a LOT of diet- and nutrition-related questions from friends, family, clients, and/or patients.
That’s why we created this cheat sheet, with evidence-based, easy-to-understand answers to the most common questions, all of which are covered in our newly updated Precision Nutrition Level 1 Certification program.
++++
If you’re a health and fitness professional, no doubt you get a ton of diet- and nutrition-related questions.
Heck, even if you’re just really passionate about health and fitness, you’re probably getting questions all the time.
Coming up with the right answers can be difficult, because:
The right answer depends on who the asker is. Young athlete? Middle-aged man? Sixty-something woman? Whether you’re actively coaching, or you just have a diverse social network, the questions will run the gamut.
There are so many facets of nutrition. Macronutrients, micronutrients, supplements, pesticides, GMOs… where do you start?
There’s a TON of confusion about nutrition “truths.” Is red wine saving your life, or killing you? What about red meat? Eggs? And how ’bout that new plant-based diet?
The truth is, there is no one-size-fits-all answer to any nutrition question.
However, if you build a strong foundation of nutrition knowledge, you can:
learn how to accurately determine each person’s individual needs,
understand how targeted nutrition can support their goals, and
get better results for them, confidently and reliably.
With this article, you’ll start to build that foundation.
Here we’ll cover:
what’s really behind the most common nutrition questions,
why each person’s unique physiology matters,
how each person’s situation can help determine your response,
how to handle diet trends (Paleo, carb-phobia, etc.), and
how you can incorporate this knowledge… starting today.
Of course, this “cheat sheet” is just a start. There’s so much more you can learn.
That’s why devote the entire first unit of our newly updated Precision Nutrition Level 1 Certification — 300 pages, 8 chapters, 8 comprehensive video lectures — to the most crucial elements of nutrition science.
That includes the most up-to-date findings in cell physiology, digestion, energy transfer, nutrient biochemistry, and more.
And, in case you’re wondering, the other 300 pages, 9 chapters, and 9 video lectures are devoted to the art of nutrition coaching.
That includes the most up-to-date findings in change psychology and the latest things we’ve learned having coached over 100,000 clients.
So…
If you want to learn, we’re here to teach.
If you feel excited and inspired by what you learn today, and you’d like to learn more about the program, please put your name on our Precision Nutrition Level 1 Certification presale list below.
We’re excited and inspired too.
We recently updated the program with the latest research, and enhanced it with a new workbook/study guide, over 35 new client assessment forms and questionnaires, and 17 brand-new animated videos.
The program opens up on Wednesday, April 3rd.
Since we only take a limited number of students, and the program sells out every time, we recommend adding your name to our presale list below. When you do, you get the chance to sign up 24 hours before everyone else. Even better, you’ll save up to 33% off the general price of the program.
Double win.
For now, let’s get started with some of the most common nutrition questions, including:
Question #1: “I’m new to this whole nutrition thing. Where do I start?” Question #2: “What’s the best diet to follow?” Question #3: “Is counting calories important for weight loss?” Question #4: “Should I avoid carbs?” Question #5: “Should I avoid grains?” Question #6: “What (and when) should I eat around my workouts?” Question #7: Should I drink less alcohol? Question #8: “Does the Paleo Diet live up to the hype?” Question #9: Should I do a detox or juice cleanse? Question #10: “Do sleep habits and stress really affect nutrition?” Question #11: How should I eat to get six-pack abs?”
Question #1 “I’m new to this whole nutrition thing. Where do I start?”
Answer: Let’s start by eliminating nutritional deficiencies.
This one is always interesting, because no one ever wants to believe they have nutritional deficiencies.
People might not want to hear it at first, but nutrition beginners don’t need a major diet overhaul on day one. They don’t need to “go Paleo” or “eliminate sugar.”
As their coach, your first step should be to open newbie clients’ eyes to the fact that they probably have one or more nutritional deficiencies (seriously — more than 80 percent of the population has at least one).
Until nutritional deficiencies are removed, the body simply won’t function properly — and that makes any health or fitness goal a lot harder.
So, to eliminate deficiencies, your first order of business is to help the person find workable strategies for rounding out the diet, so they get:
a bit more protein,
ample vitamins and minerals,
sufficient healthy fats, and
more water.
Tell them that you’re going to help them establish optimal eating habits one step at a time. Then talk through some strategies: Find out which of the nutritional areas listed above will be most challenging for them (for example, some of the beginners we work with don’t know how to cook meat). That’s the problem you’re going to help them solve first.
Once nutritional deficiencies are addressed, you can start to focus on things like food quality and portions.
What to say when the person seems impatient? Explain: “This process isn’t slow; it’s systematic. It focuses on the things that are in your way right now. Once they’re eliminated, progress happens fast.”

Question #2 “What’s the best diet to follow?”
Answer: There is no “best diet.”
As you emerge as a health, fitness, and nutrition expert, everyone’s going to want to know: Which dietary “camp” do you belong to?
The best coaches maintain a neutral position on this. If you can, strive to be a nutritional agnostic: someone who doesn’t subscribe to any one dietary philosophy.
Why? All dietary protocols have their pros and cons. What works best for one person won’t work best for another. Also: A diet that has worked best for someone in the past won’t necessarily be what works best for them moving forward.
Tell your client or patient that you’re going to help them find the approach to eating that works best for them right now, whether it be Paleo or vegan, high-carb or low-carb, tight budget or unlimited funds — or some blend of all of these.
The truth is, the human body is amazingly adaptable to a vast array of diets, so the best diet is the one that:
matches the person’s unique physiology,
includes foods they enjoy enough to follow consistently, and
is realistic for them in terms of life logistics and budget.
Indeed, you can make people lean, strong, and healthy on a plant-based or a meat-based diet. You can help improve their health with organic, free-range foods and with conventional foods. They can lose weight on a low food budget or an unlimited one.
It just takes a little know-how and a system for using the best practices across all diets.

Question #3 “Is counting calories important for weight loss?”
Answer: For many people, calorie counting may be more of a hassle than it’s worth. The good news: There is a better way.
Weight management is a simple equation: Eat more than you burn, and you gain weight. Eat less and you lose weight.
But the physiology behind “calories in, calories out” is actually much more complex and dynamic than most people realize. Plus, it’s imprecise; we estimate that there’s typically an error of up to 25 percent on the ‘calories in’ side, and on the ‘calories out’ side.
Beyond that, counting calories is an external system (outside of your body). In essence, people who count calories are less likely to see lasting results because they’re outsourcing appetite awareness to the food-label gods. To really win at portion control, coach your clients or patients on tuning into their internal hunger signals.
For these reasons, and more, we tell our clients that for most people, counting calories is a lot of work for very little benefit.
(Interestingly, most clients become elated when they realize they can get the body transformation they want without ever counting calories again.)
Instead of calorie counting, we recommend a hand-measure system for portion sizes. Here how it works:
Your palm determines your protein portions.
Your fist determines your veggie portions.
Your cupped hand determines your carb portions.
Your thumb determines your fat portions.
This system counts your calories for you, and gets your macronutrients lined up too, without having to do any annoying food-label math.
Plus, your hands are portable — they go wherever you go, making portion-sizing very convenient. In addition, your hands are generally scaled to your size — the bigger you are, the bigger your hands, so the more food you need and the more food you get.
Clients typically get the hang of this system within a week of learning it; then we help them monitor results and tweak as needed.

Question #4 “Should I avoid carbs?”
Answer: No; but let’s make sure you’re getting the right kind of carbs.
Ask almost anyone what they need to do to lose a few pounds, and they’ll probably say: “Cut back on carbs.” As a professional in a health/fitness field, you’ve probably heard it dozens of times.
However, most folks would do best eating a moderate amount of quality carbs—whole grains (when tolerated), fruit, potatoes, sweet potatoes, beans and legumes, etc. (We emphasize moderate, of course).
For men, this usually means about 1-2 cupped handfuls per meal. And women, about 1 cupped handful per meal.
Of course, the needs of each individual may differ, based on their size, activity level, goals, and genetics.
But, bottom line, carbs are not inherently fattening, especially whole food sources. And getting adequate carbs can help most clients exercise harder and recover better, optimizing progress.
Yep, this is a controversial position to take. But it works. And while avoiding carbs may facilitate rapid weight loss initially, we’ve found that it’s not practical (or necessary) for long-term success for most people.

Question #5 “Should I avoid grains?”
Answer: No; most people trying to stay lean do best with a reasonable amount of whole grains.
Grain discussions are really trendy right now, as many people have suggested they’re dietary enemy #1 and should be completely eliminated. This is hot news as, just ten years ago, they were supposedly one of the healthiest foods on the planet.
From our perspective, grains aren’t as evil as they’ve been made out to be by the Paleo and Whole30 camps. At the same time, they aren’t the superfood vegans and macrobiotic eaters suggest either.
Bottom line: While you don’t need to eat grains, unless you have celiac disease or a FODMAP intolerance, there is absolutely no need to avoid them. (And even in those two scenarios, it’s only specific grains you need to worry about).
Most people follow a better, more health-promoting diet if they’re allowed grains in reasonable amounts, along with a wide array of other non-grain carb sources like fruit, potatoes, sweet potatoes, beans, lentils, etc.
Remember, it’s the ability to follow a diet consistently over time that provides the greatest results, regardless of what that diet is. And unless you’re intolerant, there’s no good reason to totally exclude certain foods, especially foods you enjoy.

Settling the great grain debate: Can wheat and other grains fit into a healthy—and sane—diet?
Question #6: “What (and when) should I eat around my workouts?”
Answer: It depends on your goals. Let’s talk about those… then we can come up with specific recommendations for you.
If you train athletes, this is a really common question. But lots of non-athletes are curious too.
Contrary to popular media, most folks are best served by eating good quality whole foods in reasonable amounts, without having to focus on specific workout nutrition products or protocols.
So you can advise non-athlete level clients to eat a normal, balanced meal 1-2 hours before and after exercise. This will provide adequate protein and carbs to both fuel the workout and maximize recovery/adaption.
However, if you coach advanced, hard-training clients or athletes, tell them you’re going to help with their unique workout-nutrition needs.
Endurance athletes, bodybuilders, or those looking to maximize muscle gain could add a protein and carbohydrate drink during their workout. We usually recommend about 15 g of protein and 30-45 g of carbohydrate per hour of exercise.
Physique competitors, as well as people trying to maximize fat loss, could add essential amino acids (or branched chain amino acids) during their workout. We usually recommend 5-15 g of EAA (or BCAA) per hour of exercise.
In the end, rather than having one stock answer here, you need to be clear about who you’re working with.

Question #7 Should I drink less alcohol?
Answer: If optimal health and fitness is your priority, consider reevaluating your drinking habits.
People may balk at that answer initially, but once you lay out the facts and make it clear that you’re not telling them not to drink, their ears will open.
There’s a lot of confusion about whether drinking is good for you or not. That’s mainly because the news media likes to play up new studies revealing the possible cardiovascular benefits of alcohol.
But the truth is, no one really knows who will benefit from light to moderate alcohol consumption. Meanwhile, any level of drinking (even “moderate”) comes with health risks that should be considered.
Heavy drinking — more than 7 drinks a week for women and more than 14 per week for men — increases the risk for a long list of health problems involving the heart, brain, immunity, hormones, liver, and metabolism.
But even light to moderate drinking can affect sleep, appetite, and decision making — which absolutely can have a negative impact on your clients’ health and fitness goals.
Still, drinking is an undeniable part of culture, and when enjoyed reasonably it can be delicious and fun.
Tell your clients or patients that you’re going to help them sort out their priorities to determine the best level of drinking for them. Then encourage them to track their drinking habits — and how their drinking habits make them feel physically and psychologically — for a couple weeks.
Most drinkers consume a lot more alcohol than they think, and when they stop to evaluate, many decide on their own that it would feel better to cut back.

Question #8 “Does the Paleo Diet live up to the hype?”
Answer: Mostly, yes. But not for the reasons you think.
The Paleo Diet is one of the most popular nutrition approaches in the world right now. There’s no doubt that it works for many people. However, the reason it works has little to do with the story the Paleo proponents tell (evolutionary adaptation, inflammation, etc.).
Here’s the deal. Paleo does work for a lot of people because it emphasizes mostly whole-food sources of lean protein, vegetables, fruits, and healthy fats.
However, while Paleo is starting to incorporate more high-quality carbs, grass-fed dairy, red wine, and other things that used to be “off limits” — the diet can still be too restrictive for some folks.
In the end, Paleo likely gets more right than wrong. And if people want to follow it, you can help them do it in a sane, reasonable, sustainable manner.
But for most, it’s unnecessary to follow such a strict dietary ideology. You can take the good from the Paleo approach and get rid of the silly dogma.

Question #9 Should I do a detox or juice cleanse?
Answer: Probably not; most popular detox diets don’t remove toxins or lead to fat loss.
Lots of people are worried about the effect of modern lifestyle factors like poor nutrition, sleep deprivation, stress, and environmental pollutants on their health.
So you probably get a fair number of questions about detox diets and juice cleanses, which have come into vogue as an efficient way to (supposedly) lose weight and rid the body of impurities.
But detox diets don’t clean out toxins or help you lose body fat. In fact, detox diets can work against these goals by bypassing the body’s natural detoxification systems and creating a feast-or-famine cycle of eating.
Among many problems, detoxes and cleanses often:
are protein deficient,
are extremely low in energy,
cause unhealthy blood-sugar swings,
cause GI tract dysfunction, and
lead to a yoyo of restrictive eating and overcompensation.
If doing a juice cleanse or detox diet helps a person get ready to make further helpful and sustainable changes in their life, OK. Just coach them through a cautious and monitored protocol.
However, we prefer helping them build life-long skills and incorporate daily practices to improve their health, performance, and body composition without extreme (and unsustainable) things like detoxes and cleanses.

Question #10 “Do sleep habits and stress really affect nutrition?”
Answer: Yes, but those effects vary from person to person, as do the best sleep and stress management strategies.
Sleep is just as important as nutrition and exercise when it comes to improving your health, performance, and body composition.
Clients and patients should be coached through:
creating a sleep routine, including having a regular schedule,
limiting alcohol and caffeine, especially in the afternoon/evening,
choosing de-stressing activities before bed,
setting an appropriate room temperature for sleep,
making the room dark,
keeping the room quiet, and
waking up appropriately, with light exposure and soft noise.
As for stress, it’s all about finding the sweet spot. Too much stress, or the wrong kind, can harm our health. Yet stress can also be a positive force in our lives, keeping us focused, alert, and at the top of our game.
It all depends on what kind of stress it is, how prepared we are to meet it — and how we view it.
Since stress affects the mind, body, and behavior in many ways, everyone experiences stress differently. Each of us has a unique “recovery zone,” whether that’s physical or psychological, and our recovery zone depends on several factors.
It is critical to teach people strategies and skills to view and handle their own stress load appropriately. The following can increase stress tolerance or diminish stress load:
meditation or yoga
outdoor time
snuggling a pet
listening to relaxing music
deep breathing
drinking green tea

Question #11 How should I eat to get six-pack abs?”
Answer: First let’s explore whether a six pack is worth the trade-offs.
To answer this one, you first have to know if six-pack abs are really what your client wants. (And if they’re prepared to do what it takes.)
Getting ripped abs is a much bigger undertaking than most people realize. There are definite benefits to getting that lean (<10 percent for most men, and <20 percent for most women), but there are real trade-offs too.
Alcohol, processed foods, and desserts all need to be severely limited if you’re trying to lose fat and show off a washboard stomach. Social situations often become difficult. Other interests and hobbies may need to decrease.
However, if clients really want to get a six-pack in the healthiest possible way, they’ll need to follow these principles 90-95 percent of the time:
eat protein and vegetables at every meal,
include healthy fats at most meals,
eat a small amount of carbs post-workout only,
limit carbs at all other meals,
exercise intensely 4-5 times per week, and
get at least 8 hours of sleep each night.
Armed with this information, you can have an honest conversation about whether your clients want the six-pack badly enough. (Or if they’d settle for moderately lean and healthy without giving up some of the other things they enjoy).

Twelve Thai boys had scarcely been rescued from a flooded cave by divers and Thai Navy SEALS before the intention to shoot a movie adaptation was announced by PureFlix, the production and distribution company that focuses on faith-market releases like the God’s Not Dead series and The Case for Christ.
A day later, a second film about the events was announced, this time helmed by Jon M. Chu (director of the upcoming Crazy Rich Asians) and produced by LA-based Ivanhoe Pictures. Ivanhoe’s president announced that the company had been selected by the Thai Navy and Thailand’s government to develop the film.
It’s not uncommon for multiple movies or TV shows about the same person or real event to come out around the same time. Think of 2006, when both Oliver Stone’s World Trade Center and Paul Greengrass’s United 93 came out. Or 2016, when the documentary O.J.: Made in America and the scripted TV show The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story were both released. It happens a lot.
And this rescue story, which garnered weeks of high-profile news coverage and captivated people around the world, will inspire more than just these two films. For instance, Deadline reported that Discovery Inc. ordered a documentary about the rescue mission to first air on Friday, July 13 — just days after the rescue — and the Wall Street Journal noted that books are likely on the way, too.
But these two “fiction” films attracted particular attention because of questions about how the story would be approached by the two companies, fueled partly by comments Chu made on Twitter about “whitewashing,” as well as competing efforts to obtain the rights to the story — and the realities about who owns those rights.
On Wednesday, Chu — who is Chinese-American — weighed in via Twitter, confirming his intention to make his own film in response. In his tweets, Chu suggested that Hollywood might “whitewash” the story.
“That won’t happen or we’ll give them hell,” he wrote, saying that “anyone thinking about the story better approach it right & respectfully.”
And though Chu didn’t name Pure Flix specifically in the tweets, the timing suggested it was in response to the company’s announcement about its intention to make the film.
I refuse to let Hollywood #whitewashout the Thai Cave rescue story! No way. Not on our watch. That won’t happen or we’ll give them hell. There’s a beautiful story abt human beings saving other human beings. So anyone thinking abt the story better approach it right & respectfully.
— Jon M. Chu (@jonmchu) July 11, 2018
Its a bit early 2truly discuss but the biggest lesson I learned frm making #CrazyRichAsians is that we must tell our stories especially the important ones so history doesnt get it wrong. This one is too important 2 let others dictate who the real heroes are https://t.co/ZmnSBFvPI3
— Jon M. Chu (@jonmchu) July 12, 2018
We have the power to not only MAKE history but be the historians that RECORD it too. So that it’s told correctly and respectfully. Couldn’t just sit here watching how others would “interpret” this important story. https://t.co/kRv5k9plDU
— Jon M. Chu (@jonmchu) July 12, 2018
Reached by email for comment on Thursday, Chu’s publicist said that “his tweet is his statement.”
For his part, Pure Flix producer and founding partner Michael Scott said in a video posted to Twitter that his goal was to make an inspiring movie, but not necessarily a “Christian movie.” According to company reps, the company intends to produce the film through Pinnacle Peak, Pure Flix’s more mainstream brand.
Reached via email in Thailand, Scott explained why he was interested in the project. “This story has a personal connection for me, as my wife (who is from Thailand) knew Navy Seal Saman Kunan who died during the rescue,” Scott wrote. “I spend many months here a year, and it was incredible to see a miracle happen with these young boys and the rescuers.”

Scott reiterated that Pure Flix’s intention was not to make the movie “for one specific ‘religious’ audience … Often times people try to turn a story meant to inspire into a political statement, or with a specific agenda in mind. As we pursue this opportunity, we are considering how to keep the film authentic to what occurred and who was involved.”
Though Pure Flix has been the target of some criticism (including from me) for elements of its movies, there’s nothing in its history that would specifically suggest it would “whitewash” the rescue story. Nor is Pure Flix a “Hollywood” studio by any real definition of the term — it often produces and distributes its films itself, outside the entertainment mainstream, and its streaming service consists largely of films and TV shows that aren’t part of the entertainment produced by Hollywood’s biggest studios.
That makes Chu’s tweets a little curious. But there’s a history behind them, whether or not Pure Flix is the right target.
As Vox’s Joss Fong and Christophe Haubursin explain in this video, Hollywood has a history of not just giving Asian roles to white actors, but also using those roles to mock Asian people:
Hollywood’s best Asian roles still go to white people
The most recent instance of “whitewashing” controversy roiled in 2016, when Scarlett Johansson was cast as Motoko Kusanagi, the Japanese lead character in Ghost in the Shell adapted from Masamune Shirow’s manga. The film’s producers chose to make the main characters more white rather than casting Asian actors for the roles — a practice that seems remarkably backward in the 21st century.
Though the term “whitewashing” is usually applied to casting, Chu may also have been alluding to Hollywood’s history of making “white savior” movies, in which stories about people of color or in distant lands are supposedly made more “relatable” to an American audience by inserting a white and often American figure into the story who saves the day. That criticism was leveled, for instance, against The Great Wall, a film about Chinese people that kind of randomly inserted Matt Damon into the story, too. (The film turned out to be a dud, if an eye-popping one.)
And although a number of the divers who helped rescue the boys from the cave were white Europeans, the story is, fundamentally, a Thai story with Thai protagonists; the ex-SEAL who died in the rescue attempt was Thai as well.
So it’s likely that in saying that “we have the power to not only make history but be the historians who record it,” Chu is worried the film will center the outsiders who came to help rather than the community at the heart of the story.
But whether or not whitewashing is ultimately part of the PureFlix project, Chu’s comments did attract attention to Ivanhoe Pictures’s version of the story. And that brings another consideration into play: Who owns the rights to this story? Can there be two Thai cave rescue movies at once?
The short answer: Yes, and it’s likely they will.
David A.R. White, co-founder of PureFlix, told the Wall Street Journal that the company was pursuing life rights from some of the people involved. “You get their stories, and then it’s a matter of making sure the writer can tell the story in a dramatic and inspirational way,” he told the WSJ. “At the same time, these stories still have to be entertaining and moving.”
“My co-producer Adam Smith and I are in the initial phases of producing and gathering information,” Scott confirmed by email. “We are talking to several people about the film release and considering a partnership, if it makes sense.”
For its part, Ivanhoe Pictures is in talks with “the most senior officials in Thailand, both on provincial and national levels, about the rescue project,” according to Variety
“If it’s a newsworthy event. If the story’s fact, then nobody owns that story,” entertainment and intellectual property lawyer Stephen Rodner explained by phone. Rodner, senior counsel at Pryor Cashman in New York, has long worked with clients seeking to adapt true stories for the screen.
To put it simply, Rodner said, any newsworthy story is fair game, at least under US law. Even a public figure can’t block someone from making a movie about his or her life, though Rodner notes that “the one thing you can’t do is libel anybody in the film.”
However, the private details of an individual’s life, as well as elements of the story that were not publicly reported, are not as readily available. To gain access to those, a production company would need to find ways to make deals with individuals and entities involved in the story.
It all boils down to access. Because Ivanhoe Pictures is working with the Thai Navy and the country’s government, for instance, they may have access to people, places, and information more easily in making the film.
And at least under US law, acquiring life rights can give the filmmakers access to information that may be private. “I assume they could make a contract with the people involved and get information that nobody else has,” Rodner said. “They can also, by contract, have them not cooperate” with any other production, noting that the people under question in this case are not US citizens and thus the laws may vary some.
But “as far as making a film on a newsworthy event, anybody could do it,” Rodner noted. And there’s no way for one production to block another from happening, unless one screenplay blatantly rips off another. Publicly reported news stories are fair game to anyone.
Given the commercial value of the story, there’s a strong possibility that both films could go ahead, and maybe even be released around the same time.
Rescue workers at the cave on July 4, days before the rescue succeeded. Linh Pham/Getty Images
And that’s a smart business move. As critic Lara Zarum wrote in the Village Voice following the release of Clint Eastwood’s The 15:17 to Paris, Hollywood has always had a fascination with quickly retelling tales of heroism, stretching back to the 1930s. Since 9/11, those stories have taken on a particularly triumphal and patriotic cast for Americans, in movies like Lone Survivor and American Sniper.
But, as she notes, “the acceleration of this process over the past decade means more and more people absorb these incidents not through reporting but through the prism of Hollywood convention, with all the mythologizing and smoothing-over of inconvenient bumps that implies.”
It’s possible that’s what Chu is worried about: that the movie version of the rescue story will become the version of the story in people’s minds, and that it may displace the Thai community who rallied around the rescue attempt in favor of a white savior.
For their part, PureFlix sees the film as an inspirational tale anyone could appreciate. “I believe this story demonstrates all the elements audiences long for — hope in the midst of tragedy, a miraculous story, the determination of the boys, their coach and the rescuers. It exemplifies the power of the human spirit,” Scott wrote. “This was an event every parent could identify with and that united our world as we all prayed for a miraculous outcome, and one we received.”
Making a movie takes a while, so we won’t know the results right away. But for now, the race to bend the Thai cave rescue saga into a captivating big-screen spectacle is on.

++++

READ MORE:
Carb controversy: Why low-carb diets have got it all wrong.
The ketogenic diet: Does it live up to the hype?
