Me, knowing how this podcast works and that almost every time they mention a solution, they're either outright wrong or half right at best, so most likely whatever happens will be none of this and is probably much worse:

Jonny and Alex: What if we create a character and slowly have him go through a corruption arc over five seasons which will inevitably lead him to be an unsympathetic person capable of choosing to destroy the world.

Martin: You can't do that.

Jonny and Alex: Why not?

Martin: I love him.

Jonny and Alex now writing the series with Jonmartin as the emotional core of it all where Jon ends up being sympathetic and lovable until the very end: Understandable have a nice day.

I am now convinced that in a reality where Jon and Martin grow old together that they would be the absolute bitchiest couple to ever exist. They would be in love and absolutely adore each other, but would roast the fuck out of everyone including and especially each other. They'd be so obnoxious and give no shits. They've earned the right to be sassy old men damn it.

I'm going to be consumed by the ending from a tragedy and horror angle for awhile.

The Web won. After all that, the Mother's plan was finished and the fears got to escape. Jon ended up a mystery. Martin had to kill Jon, the one thing he said he couldn't do. The fears as we know them are gone from their world, but they get to continue to grow and manifest and spread throughout the world, and this time they know what to do to continue doing it.

For our characters, they either got ambiguous or happy endings. But the horror lives on and it will continue living.

Jonmartin but they're all okay and they have a cat and it's really wholesome

MAG154 spoilers! (as in, speculation) this is what i consider “okay” okay

Jon wakes up to darkness.

That is fine. That is comfort. That is triumph: one day he'll get used to it but in the meantime, every morning he wakes up to darkness makes his heart beat faster in incredulous elation.

Some days Jon wakes up to cold and silence. That is fine; he knew that would be part of it. Those days are far from his favourite, but they are a price he is glad to pay, would gladly pay a thousandfold more often in exchange for just one of the other days.

Today, he has woken up to cold, which absolutely will not do, but not to silence, and so he drags himself out of the deserted bed and follows the purring down the hallway.

He doesn't need to drag his hand along the walls of their flat, these days, but he does it anyway because sometimes Martin pins up scraps of paper etched in braille, reminders to himself or bits of poetry or small messages to Jon, or all of those at once. A new sort of scavenger hunt for statements, one that isn't necessary because Jon has never felt that hunger again, but one he enjoys. Like keeping a curious cat entertained, Martin chuckled, once, which Jon protested a little, because there's already one cat in this flat, but only a little, because he doesn't mind and it doesn't matter and it's good, having his biggest problem be Martin's teasing.

Mrs. Reynolds is purring louder than the London Underground and Jon easily locates her on the sofa, and from there the hands petting her, and the chest she is snuggling against, and the mouth whispering sweet nothings to her, and perhaps he might be somewhat like a cat after all because he rather likes all those things as well.

Martin snorts softly and mumbles against Jon's lips: "Hey. Slept well?"

"Yes," Jon says.

ok so i KNOW we’ve all seen and collectively lost our minds over those multiple posts about the jonmartin parallels surrounding “I need you” and other quotes like them. and i KNOW that both of their use of “I need you” definitely has a ring of love language to it, of saying i love you without saying i love you, etc etc, that’s obvious. but can we talk about how Powerful it is that these two always come back to confessing that they need each other? that in moments of emotional intimacy, in moments of confession, of hoping to make a connection with the other, of fear or worry for the other person- that’s what they always go to? that at the end of the day, they need the other person? these two characters, both of who’s entire arcs the whole show thus far have been about isolating themselves, force themselves to admit, over and over again, that they need someone else? can we just talk about that for a second?

first you have jon, who up until this season was Constantly separating and isolating himself from literally everyone. in the first season, he pushed tim and sasha and martin away, he surrounded himself in his work, threw himself into the statements, and barricaded himself behind his skepticism. he didn’t let himself make connections with his assistants and coworkers (and this is Canon, just look at those quotes from martin and jon in the last few episodes, how they want to look back on “the good old days” before everything went to shit with nostalgia, but the days back then weren’t really that good. they were just less bad) and maybe it’s because jon already had a suspicion that the statements were real, maybe he wanted to keep the potential danger away from tim and martin and sasha, but i think season 1!Jon also thought he was better than them. he was the head archivist after all, and he told himself he was a staunch skeptic and looked down on the statement givers for their belief in the supernatural, and for the majority of season one, that included sasha, tim, and specifically martin. and yeah, its canon that jon’s skepticism was a defense mechanism, that he rebuffed all the potential for the statements to be real because if he admitted they could be real, then it would become dangerous, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t do it. then, you have season 2, where jon spends the entire time in a paranoia-fueled haze, where he refuses to trust anyone and pushes them all away as far as he can while still keeping (and excuse my ironic turn of phrase here) an eye on them. season 3 jon thinks he’s a monster, or turning into one at the very least, and is terrified of relying on people because every time he does, they turn against him (elias and his secrets, sasha being a not-them, basira believing him to be a suspect) or they get hurt (basira and daisy and melanie getting trapped in the archives, sasha getting taken by the not-them, tim and martin getting hurt in prentiss’s attack on the archive). up until season 4, jon consistently isolates himself, he doesn’t rely on other people, whether for their well being or his own. but over the course of season 4 (at least thus far) jon has tried to let people in, to trust those around him and rely on them when he needs to. he cuts melanie off from the slaughter, works alongside basira to investigate several cases, rescues daisy from the buried, and tries under multiple occasions to make contact with martin, to pull him away from peter lukas and the lonely. jonathan sims, who’s spent at least the last three years cutting himself off from as many people as he can, tells martin that he needs him, that he worries about him, that he trusts him and wants him to be ok. 

and then you have martin, and maybe pre-season 4 his isolation from the others wasn’t as self-inflicted as jon’s was, but he pulls himself away from the rest of the world, he threw himself into life at the archives, especially post season 1. and by the season 3 finale... he has nothing else. his mother is gone, sasha and tim are dead, basira and melanie tolerate him at best, elias is evil and in jail by martin’s hand, and jon is presumably dead. he is, literally, alone. so he joins with peter lukas and he tells himself it’s for the good of the others, for the good of the world, and he goes head first and willingly into the lonely. and then jon comes back, and against all odds, he keeps finding martin, keeps trying to talk to him, trying to forge and reforge connection with him. and martin says, “but then- Jon came back. And suddenly, I had a reason.” (mag158) and he admits, over and over again, that despite trying to pull away, despite trying not to let jon in, despite peter and the lonely and the extinction and everything else- he still needs jon. he still comes back to that one thing, even though he’s so, so tempted by the safety the lonely offers him, the quiet and the distance from the hurt; he still comes back to needing jon. to trusting him and relying on him. [JON: well, I’ll be here, if you ever need me. MARTIN: I hope so. (mag154) ] 

and now, with everything that’s happened in the last two episodes, it’s all finally coming to a head. martin admits to pulling away from the lonely, at least in some part, because of jon. jon willingly follows martin into the lonely, and decimates peter lukas to find him inside the lonely, against all odds. despite everything, all their trauma and anger and hurt and despite spending literally years pulling away from people to try and protect themselves- we finally see martin and jon find each other. in every sense of the word. “I need you,” Jon tells martin, together in the lonely, jon’s need to find martin was so great that he found him in a place who’s entire goal, the point of its existence is to keep people apart. that is how much they needed each other. they let themselves rely on someone else, to want them and trust them, even though they’ve both spent so long trying to be independent? trying to rely only on themselves? to pull away from everyone else? 

think about how powerful and wonderful it is that two characters who have been so consistently alone and isolated over the course of the show, when faced with the personification of pure, terrifying loneliness, look at it and say, “no.” and let themselves demand the thing- the person- they want. and that need is powerful enough to pull themselves out of the lonely, together.
