You slowly circle the prisoner, tapping your baton against the gloved palm of your hand. In the dim light, you swear you see a drop of sweat trickle down his chest. He kneels on the ground of the cell, heels tucked underneath him and arms held behind his back. But he is not restrained.

"Are you ready for today's routine interrogation?"

"Y-Yes, ma'am..." He whispers in reverence.

You hum, "What was that? I couldn't hear you."

"Yes, ma'am!" He repeats instantly, voice wavering slightly less this time.

Subject CL204 from the Fourth Ward, Sector Six. He is a very unique specimen. Despite the intense distortions messing with his mind, he's more compliant than some of his counterparts from the lower threat Wards.

"Good." You praise him, walking over to your chair.

You take a seat and cross your legs. CL204 whimpers quietly.

"Speak your mind." You encourage him.

He fidgets in his spot, glancing between your face and the floor.

"Permission to approach?" He breathes out, finally.

"Granted."

As soon as the affirmation leaves your lips, he springs from his heels and crawls over towards you. He stops right in front of you, hovering his chin above your knee.

"Permission to..." He swallows thickly, "Touch? Please?"

You scan your eyes over him. He seems stable enough.

"...Granted." You allow carefully.

He lets out a shaky breath, arms wrapping around your legs as he rests his head on your knee.

"The chair is hard." He rambles, "You should sit more comfortable."

You squint your eyes at him. He's trying something. Nothing nefarious necessarily. But he is testing the waters, looking for something.

"Are you suggesting more furnishing for your cell?" You don't think that's what he's asking, but you feign ignorance.

"No! No." He replies quickly.

He rubs his hand over your shin. Though he is the one carressing you, this action is clearly calming to him.

He licks his lips, as if tasting the words before he speaks them, "I could be your cushion."

You're still not satisfied with his insinuations.

"I won't sit on your lap, prisoner." You state firmly.

He jolts away from you, as if burned. Though you don't follow, the grip on your baton tightens on reflex.

"Not on my lap, ma'am." He scoots back over to you, pressing his forehead against the tip of your boot, "On my back..."

Even though you're familiar with the suggestion, it takes you slightly by surprise in this situation. For a moment, you wonder if you should go along with his needy requests or if it'd be more beneficial to keep a distance. Still, you'd hate to make him feel as though you're punishing him. At his best, he is easily the most well-behaved of the Sixth Sector beasts.

You slowly get up from your chair and he immediately scuttles backwards to give you space. He wastes no time bracing himself on his arms, lowering his head as he awaits your next move. You turn around and seat yourself on his muscular back. He hisses, feeling the leather of your uniform stick to the bare skin of his back.

"You're right." You muse, "This is more comfortable."

You absentmindedly trace the tip of your baton over his tailbone. You can feel him shiver underneath you.

"Thank you, ma'am. Always a pleasure, ma'am." He says between uneven breaths.

Classic Caleb. So eager to serve, so eager to please. Even in this detoriated state, that part of him never changes.

"Who am I?" You deliver the usual question.

He whimpers your name.

"Excellent." You take off one of your gloves and rub your hand over the back of his neck.

He moans softly, reveling in the skin-on-skin contact.

"When was I last here?" You pause your hand to let him focus on answering your questions.

He starts muttering numbers. He's counting mealtimes to calculate the days.

"Eight days, ma'am." He concludes.

"Very good." You comb your fingers through his hair.

Despite practically melting under your touch, he makes for a sturdy and stable seat.

"What did I ask you last time?"

"You gave me notes. Asked me to identify the ones written by me."

You gently pull on his hair, massaging his scalp. You can feel him start to tremble lightly.

"Yes. And how did you do?"

He takes a moment before daring to answer, "Good?"

"That's right. You were a very good boy, Caleb."

The tremors intensify. You swiftly lift yourself off his back. As soon as your warmth leaves him, he lets out a pathetic cry and slumps to the ground. He whines your name, in a manner that sounds almost jovial and boyish.

"Who are you?" You finally ask him.

He blinks blearily at you, then smiles so softly it makes your chest tighten.

"I..."

You hold your breath.

"I'll always be... By your side."

The prisoner passes out.

Despite your best efforts and his great progress...

Another failure.

You stroke his hair. He looks almost peaceful like this, free from the shackles of madness for just a moment.

"Go to bed."

The limp body goes taut. Without awakening, the prisoner carefully stands up and makes his way to the mattress in his cell before laying down on it. His muscles relax again, command completed.

You almost wish he was always this sweet. Putty and pliant in your hands, craving if only the sound of your voice. And yet you still missed him. The Caleb that tried to tease you, despite knowing your icy demeanor. The Caleb that pushed back against you when he was being overprotective. But even this rabid dog before you shall be domesticated by you one day.

caleb would definitely be one whiney fucker though like he might be able to hold it together for a while when he first pushes into you, but after a few minutes, he'd get whimpery -- make these abortive little noises at the back of his throat every time he thrusts in, and you can tell he's trying to stop himself because god, it's so embarrassing, how he can't stop whining, but you just feel so good, and he's thought about it for so long -- wanted this for so long that he can't help himself -- makes the most debauched noises, swears under his breath, by your ear, groaning and grunting, whispering to you about how good you feel and how long he's wanted to do this, it's the only thing he's been able to think about.

"f-feels so good -- ngh --" he'd murmur, keening a bit as you clench down around him; he nearly blacks out thinking of your cunt milking his cock for all its worth.

"caleb -- caleb --" it's all you can do to manage out his name.

he buries his face in the crook of your neck, wonders how long it's been -- he really hopes that it hasn't only been a few minutes, even though to him it's felt like hours, time compressing in on itself, heat and slick and the lewd smack of skin on skin.

"sorry, sorry -- fuck -- m'gonna cum --" he hisses out, whining high in he back of his throat as he twitches inside you, spilling inside you in great hot spurts. you moan, lashes fluttering at the feel of him painting your walls.

"don't... don't apologize..." you pant, reaching up to comb a hand through his hair. he lets out a tiny chuckle, pulling back with flushed cheeks and a helpless smile.

"i just... couldn't help myself..."

you laugh, nodding, "yeah.... yeah i know."

It’s always been summer when he took you by the hand and dragged you out to watch fireworks. It’s always been summer when you sat under the stars while he babbled about the different constellations and going beyond the deep space tunnel. It’s always been summer when you looked up at him and realized that you want him by your side for the rest of your life, whatever that means.

It’s summer when Caleb gets down on one knee, a velvet box holding a silver ring in one hand, and asks:

“Will you marry me?”

Idk man thinking about Caleb and Astrid and breakdowns. How the one time we see her have a breakdown it's so neat and quiet and private in contrast to Caleb's messy, public, even violent breakdowns. Do you think she looks down on him for not being able to control it? Do you think she resents him because Trent still wants him back even after all of it and she could never get away with something like that (does the specter of the hysterical woman keep her up at night)? Does she envy him because that's what freed him? And does that just cause the resentment to pile even higher because she could never allow herself to fall to pieces like that? Because someone has to stay in control. Someone has to keep it together.

That "I am the parent and he's the child" line being entirely divorced from its context is the bane of my existence.

Veth says that to a group of people who are convinced that she is a child being manipulated by Caleb, who is her adult guardian. She's cornered, alone, and everyone is trying to tell her that she's being manipulated into acting against the group. It's an assertion of her agency and adulthood. It's a refutation of that specific misunderstanding of their relationship. She is saying that she's a grown ass adult who knowingly allies herself with Caleb above everyone else, and that Caleb is not controlling her.

Please for the love of god, put that line back in the context in came from or so help me.

EIGHTIES, Part I Requested by @papermint-airplane Starring Caleb and Lilith Vatore

I think this was a good decade for them. Most people thought the goths might be vampires anyway, so they blended right in.

Only Caleb was requested, but we all know they come as a package deal, and I must admit I was already working on these looks anyway. I initially had Caleb in more punk attire (e.g. patched leather jacket and Mohawk), but it just didn't feel like him. I got suggested this hair, and it all fell together then. I imagine this is when he first discovered that buttoning up shirts is an unnecessary expenditure of energy. I'm not sure if it reads as quintessentially '80s, but I think it's perfect for him. This might be my favorite version of them I've done so far, and I have some story plans brewing for this era that could involve crowd participation, so keep your eyes peeled. 👀

Thinking about Caleb and how so much of his story ends with him finding meaning in the temporary.

He spent so long chasing a way to bring his parents back, but in the end he had to accept that they were gone. They were temporary. He has his memories of them now, but that’s all. And he has to find peace with that and find a way to remember them fondly, even though they’re gone now, truly and completely.

He and Essek love each other dearly, but there will come a day when he will have lived his life and grown old and Essek will still be Essek. But even so, every moment they spend together is still meaningful. Even if it ends, it means something.

Just. Caleb and loving things even when they won’t last. Maybe because they won’t last.

one person said i should go through with this so let's go! i'm gonna split the albums in half to make the posts not as long. they are still going to be long. lyrics are in italics!

can't have it all: interesting one to start off! i feel like it kind of works, but i don't know how to work some of the more specific lines (i think you'll have a ring on your finger but not now, for example, which could work for something, i feel, but i haven't thought of it). but there's things like, my mind's made up, though my head still aches / and all my love you tried to take but / you can't have it all that just. really feel like they work with the themes of having to make awful choices and going through situations that take so much from them. could work for the finale choice even. you won't find me where you left me, no, i'm long gone / you can't bind me in the state you kept me for so long. which puts me in mind of like. all the ways they're trapped in situations where some of them are able to leave even if not all of them, like with the institute and the lonely and the web and the apocalypse. unfortuately they are often bound in horrors that are harder to leave. could work i think! 6/10.

the diving bell: on the entity side of things, very much readable as vast or buried with their whole shared custody of the ocean, or the general act of giving yourself fully to the fears. i will drown for you / sink to black from blue / and let the water win. like as a metaphor for a relationship it's very much one where the singer gives up everything in the process of loving something far greater than themself and drowns. i feel the need to mention jon's door with an ocean behind it metaphor, but it's hard to make it fully work for him given the line is i am not afraid to give you everything, and i feel like there's. definitely fear involved in that situation. only a few characters aren't somewhat afraid of their entities, though there's also some that are but might say or think they aren't. you could apply it to a relationship between characters, but none specifically come to mind that fit both the ocean theme and giving yourself up entirely? given the general entity themes work well but i have no specifics i've thought of, i'd say overall 5/10.

new colors: i have half a mind to climb up in the sky / and steal new colors away from the sun. like colours but if colours hated you? aside from that, it's like. don't tell me that i can't / i need this so damn bad. wanting new knowledge/experiences like that could be a little bit eye. needing it is a bit jon, even. referencing him destroying the dark sun potential. and of course there's the line i'd give up my sight to see, which can work from a few angles, depending on if the eye is the sight or the seeing. giving up the eye to get a clearer view on things or the other way around? can work with melanie literally giving up her sight to escape as well. i'd give up my air to breathe is not a line i instantly connected to the buried and daisy getting clarity there, but i got attached to the interpretation. can also be read as giving up their life, which makes it fit a whole lot of other situations too, which is good given the line repeats. then there's the second verse, folks round here are mean, spit fire and gasoline / but all i want is solitude. like yeah. that's pretty s4 martin. first line has desolation links but can work with the more negative times in the archives, or avatars in general with the context of the whole verse. a lot to work with here. this was a 7 at first but given i started planning an animatic in my mind the more i looked at it, it gets bumped up to an 8/10.

caleb trask: this song apparently references a book, which does add layers if you want to look further, but the context doesn't change the themes of the song itself, that your blood/past shouldn't hold you back from living. "when the azaleas bloom," he said / "when the flower blossoms spread / that's the day … / i'll love you" yeah. you can s4 jonmartin that. if you might then you may, there's no reason to live bound in chains / cause you're not alone, we're the daughters of sinners, we're the sons of saints. you could do fun character contrasts here. because there are so many characters who come from good or bad or complex places both in and out of the context of fears, enough that i am not listing them because it would be most of the cast. and many characters that hold themselves back from being happy because of all the horrors and guilt (though, no reason to live bound in chains could also be more sinister depending on context (like how helen discusses things in s5 especially)). so you got bad in your blood / brother, you're one of us. obviously there's not being alone in having a bad past, but it also brings to mind that moment in 185 where jon's like "you're one of us" to martin about being with the fears. blood don't mean nothing(/a thing) / in the end. this is gerry voice in 111. hi gerry you are one of the ones i thought about for the earlier line. gonna give this one 7/10!

counting sheep: are you sleeping, brother john? john like jonathan sims? he sure was sleeping (dreams) (coma). now this is interesting, and i think it might be the first where it works to twist the meaning a bit. you may think i've already done that but i feel like there's a difference between changing the literal things (making something about the fears instead of a metaphor or relationship etc) vs changing the emotions behind it, like if something in you's fast asleep / afraid to be who you will be / it's a losing battle, so why are you still fighting? is changed to, instead of being who you truly are, to becoming an avatar, then it becomes more negative. but it does very much work. this is what puts a character song on the hear me out cake to me (post i just reblogged if you need context). not the rating, but how much i'm willing to twist the the core of it to make that rating higher. this one may be on there for me. also the feign contentment for a while / that's all you know how to do lines feels early season martin to me. as well as the prentiss situation with morning comes a day too soon / you're back inside your tiny room / waiting for something, so good at doing nothing. the wool being off their eyes could relate more to learning about the fears maybe. or more like how it actually means in the song. even with tilting my head and having a beautiful mind there are parts that are harder to fit, but i like to think about it, so we're doing decimals now because. it does say jon. 5.5/10.

hole in the silver lining: ooo this one is interesting for tma. given the phrase refers to clouds, the themes could maybe lean more lonely with that, given the whole song is about pessimism. i might find nothing when i start looking / but i'll turn it over in my hands until / my fingers wear it through. the imagery here also puts me in mind of like, textiles, weaving, unravelling the wool of said cloud. so the visuals are quite web to me when i imagine them. given the web does tend to cause doubt, that's also fun. leave your doubt at the door / don't you take another step. there's lots of themes with doors. lots of themes with doubt. a quote from 139 about agnes came to mind so i looked for the episode where that was discussed and god. obsessed with jon's thoughts after the statement. "but I’m so full of doubt, it feels like there’s no room for anything else, and i'm sure martin is the same." "maybe… we’re the opposite of agnes. maybe our doubts are exactly what we need. if that’s the case, i’m an amazing chosen one." augh. so yeah. could work very well. love it. though given it's vague enough to work with quite a lot, it feels not quite specific enough for me to give higher than 8/10.

90 days isn’t enough.

These are the thoughts in my head as I watch you hunch over the table, putting together some new model kit you’d bought before you made your way here. You’d let yourself in with the key I gave you, walked right into my apartment like you did my heart so many years ago.

You glance up at me, eyes the color of sunrise meeting mine, and I inhale sharply. It’s odd because before, I’d never reacted in this way. I don’t really remember my breath stuttering nor my heart fluttering in our youth and yet everyday since you’ve been back, all I can think about is the way your breath had felt on my neck when we hugged for the first time in over a year.

You’d somehow grown taller. As if you needed to do that. And as if to prove my point, you break into a smile and stand, walking over to me and towering.

There’s a pinch in my neck as I tilt my head back to look up at you. I know you notice because I flinch just slightly and your smile twitches as if fighting to keep from widening.

“C’mon pipsqueak,” you call as you reach out. Your hand is warm around mine. Bigger. Always bigger. It’ll always be bigger because you’re older than me, you’ll remind me. For a moment I pause, glancing down at where your fingers are curled through mine.

“Pips,” you call again, a question in your tone and I smile. It feels like something blooms in my chest, a flower, my heart, affection? I’m not sure but seeing the look in your eyes has me on cloud 9. Since when had I yearned for your gaze to always be on me? Only be on me?

I see it in your face too. You feel the same things I do and you always say you’re better at pretending you don’t care but Caleb, deep down, I’ve always known of the affection you held for me. I’ve always known of my place in your heart.

“Caleb,” I call softly, watch the way affection blooms from your chest up to your face, turns your cheeks red at how gently I say your name.

“Thank you for coming home.”

Hmm... it's interesting how they made Luz wear a witch's cloak in Hunting Palisman - the episode where she introduces Flapjack to Hunter. This is also the episode where Hunter defies Belos by choosing Luz over him. He goes back to his palace empty-handed and he doesn't hand over Flapjack to Belos. Unbeknownst to Hunter, he is following Caleb's footsteps.

But then, in Hollow Mind, they made the choice to have Luz not wear her witches cloak - instead they made Luz wear a jacket with a giant "E" on it. They could have given Luz a completely different outfit like they did in Hunting Palisman. But they don't... they make her wear this specific jacket...

...They also make Hunter wear Caleb's symbol in Hollow Mind... an episode where Luz and Hunter are trapped in Philip's mind... where we can see paintings of the two most important characters in Philip's life - his brother and a witch from another world.

But I'm sure this is all unintentional.

Mhm, okay, I see... I see, very interesting. Here we have Caleb being lead away from Philip by a witch from another world after the brother's have a fall out. This fall out marks the point of no return for them, as Philip later kills Caleb out of anger.

Hunter and Philip's relationship completely deteriorates because of Luz, which leads to Philip's decision to kill Hunter. She shows Hunter Belos' true nature and she offers Hunter sanctuary at The Owl House right after he finds out Belos has been lying to him his whole life... Luz saves Hunter's life and changes it forever.

Total Drama Fic Rec Week day 5 time!

So, funny story about today. I may or may not have already recommended most of my favorite gen fics yesterday since more are under 2k words. oops.

So! i only have three recs this time!

First is the fic What is this Feeling? that focuses on Priya and Caleb's relationship in a not romantic context, which i am a big fan of. it also involves aroace Caleb which is one of my favorite headcanons, and the fic is generally sweet :p

Next is Devil Doesn't Bargain which is focused on Emma and Bowie reconnecting as friends post season 1 of the reboot, with Bowie helping Emma with her absolute garbage fire relationship with Chase post break-up. We need more of their friendship man :(

Finally is the first unfinished fic im recommending, Cracked Mirror. There's only two chapters out and it takes place during World Tour. it bounces from multiple different perspectives, but mostly centers on Noah, Gwen and Alejandro during the second chapter. Also all three are trans in some way, which is the main thing explored in the fic (well Alejandro hasn't realised it yet, but the author confirmed this was what they were going for). I just had to shout it out for being like the only work i've seen with a non binary Alejandro? also Gwen's enby and i think the way it's handled is awesome. Maybe this shoutout will lead to the fic getting an update? who knows!

idk im glad they didn't give us any actual details about caleb and evelyn beyond belos's memories and like. fifty-sixth-hand information from masha's story so audience members not paying attention would at least know who they are.

whatever nitty gritty details the audience comes up with on their own for what happened to these two would be infinitely more satisfying to them than what the show would have been able to depict in a flashback. especially working within what's appropriate for children's television.

caleb the person isn't important to the story anymore. the MEMORY of caleb, which belos has never let himself get over in 400 years, is the important thing. and you don't need to know much about caleb for that to work. and while i loved the parallels between the wittebanes and hunter and luz, as well as the clawthornes being a descendent of evelyn, i'm glad they never confirmed it, and it remains situational irony purely for the audience.

hunter's only connection with caleb is his DNA, which also ties back to belos's feelings. him befriending luz is something they did of their own volition. it's not because hunter is fated to play out every beat of caleb's life by virtue of being his clone. similarly, while i love a good hunter clawthorne, dell taking hunter as an apprentice and eda showing care towards him in s2 are because eda is kind to children and hunter independently had passion for palisman carving. it's not because they found out they were related, because the whole show is about found family.

having flashbacks to the real caleb and evelyn wouldn't have contributed anything to the story aside from fanservice. what matters is how belos feels about them. belos's ego and the desperation to be acknowledged by his puritan community and God aside, the idea of caleb haunts his every action. not the actual ghost of caleb-i've already discussed here why the idea of caleb's ghost literally haunting belos would be a poor writing decision. belos knew the person his brother actually was, killed him, and imagined a perfect version of him that he chased after for the next 350 years.

the tragedy is that the perfect version of caleb is unattainable, and now belos can never get the real caleb back. he refuses to acknowledge that caleb may have been flawed before the influence of evelyn. to phillip, everything he thinks is wrong about caleb is because he was corrupted by the boiling isles, and that's part of the reason he starts on a quest to kill all the witches. it's also why he makes so many grimwalkers. he desperately misses that ideal version of caleb, so he makes copies of caleb and plays family with them.

and belos loathes the grimwalkers. he kills them because he hates the magic they were made with. because he hates being reminded of his brother and what happened to him. and of course, he hates the grimwalkers for not meeting his expectations of what his "ideal" caleb would have been like. it's a fluid expectation that belos, subconsciously or not, changes as he goes, all in order to take out his anger on innocent children. he seems to recognize his enjoyment of harming the grimwalkers, though it's unknown if he understands the reason-which is that the "perfect" caleb will never exist, and likely never did. phillip's brother is gone forever, and it's all his fault.

and idk maybe in the writers minds caleb was a perfect brother and baby phillip was just a possessive little shit. or maybe it's the opposite and caleb messed up a lot in communicating with phillip on his relationship with evelyn. maybe evelyn was a perfectly nice girl who was perfectly supportive of caleb and phillip's choices or maybe she hated phillip and the other humans and did convince caleb to leave it all behind. it's a fascinating piece of backstory and i love seeing fanworks that talk about it! but anything more about caleb and evelyn that the creators add in canon would give actual context to their situation that we don't need! their story has been over for 350 years and dont affect any of the other characters beyond how it affects phillip!

nothing more about these two can be said that will contribute more to belos's character that isn't already conveyed with the barebones material we got in the show. this story isn't about "forbidden love," this is about how phillip was confronted with the fact that his brother found happiness outside of him, and that someone he's been taught since childhood to hate may not be all bad. it's about how he plugged his fingers in his ears in response to this and went on a 350 year long killing spree to prove to himself that he can never be in the wrong.

basically, i wouldn't go so far as to call caleb and evelyn's backstory "purposefully unexplained," but i definitely think the story is a lot stronger as it is than it would be if they did explain it all. not every detail of a story needs to have a word of god answer as to how it all went down. sometimes adding in unnecessary detail for completionism's sake just distracts from the point you're actually trying to convey. while there are a lot of things that i wished the show could have explored in more detail had it not been shortened, caleb and evelyn's story is not one of them.
