Ohhh! Veillon and Brandys with some deeeep edges and nice ice coverage in their midline. Their pattern wasn't as good, but they were RIGHT on their music for that whole program and really performed well. Another team I had never heard of but really enjoyed! Amazing packaging as well.

Sports Notes: Tessa Virtue-Scott Moir reunited
Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir will be at the Ilderton Skating Club’s 50th anniversary ice show Saturday evening (5:30 p.m. start time) at Ilderton Arena.
March 31, 2023
Tumblr media
Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir celebrate their gold medal win in the ice dance free program at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, on Feb. 20, 2018.
Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir will be at the Ilderton Skating Club’s 50th anniversary ice show Saturday evening (5:30 p.m. start time) at Ilderton Arena.
The 2010 and ‘18 Olympic champs, considered the greatest ice dance team in history, were first paired at the Ilderton club by Scott’s aunt Carol Moir when Tessa was seven and Scott was nine. Their partnership is one of the most successful and longest-running in figure skating annals.
The club also will hold two more shows at the rink Sunday (1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.).
Moir, now a successful local skating coach with the Ice Academy of Montreal’s Ontario campus in Komoka, was at the recently completed world figure skating championships in Saitama, Japan. Two of his pupils, Christina Carreira and Anthony Ponomarenko, finished in 10th place in the ice dance category.

I will miss Gravity and Aria, but I am glad he withdrew and hope ISU doesn't act too bad about it.
(Hopefully the optics of penalizing the number 1 men's figure skater who is defending GPF and Worlds (2 time) champion will convince them to not do anything)
Honestly I don't think there are any repercussions to fear. Shoma did not break any rules. Shoma is not doing an ice show at the dates of WTT and he wasn't withdrawn when he participated at SOI. Ofc Shoma withdrawing from WTT is a bummer for ISU and JSF as Shoma is undoubtedly their most popular and most decorated skater atm, but Shoma's injury is not new. He was carrying this injury since before Worlds. So it's not like the injury is an excuse he made up out of not wanting to participate. (Even ISU wrote articles on Shoma winning Worlds injured)
The ISU did the rule to avoid skaters rather skating in an ice show at the dates of the tournament instead of skating at the competition even though they could. It's supposed to be the best skaters at the event, not those who may want to participate.
Let's say lots of skaters are not actually looking forward to WTT after a long season (not saying this is the case with Shoma) and would rather start their off-season sooner than later. Quoting ice dancer Scott Moir at WTT 2012: "I hate this event" (there is a GIF of this but atm I don't find it) Also this event is always treated like some kind of fun event but with the ISU rule in place and that skaters are still able to receive personal best scores I don't think skaters feel as lighthearted about it as the event may seem from the outside.
I personally have mixed feelings about WTT as I have some dear memories from the events and it's great to see the fun and team support more openly than at other events, but bc it's a long season and bc of the ISU rules etc...for a supposedly "fun event" it carries a bit too much seriousness for my liking.

IAMO is coaching the Canadian junior champions because Carol and Alma Moir brought them up from the beginning- they’re Ilderton kids who were mediocre novices two years ago. They’re not a team Montreal sent to them, they’re a team the Moirs built from scratch. What I’m saying is that it’s quite obvious Montreal aren’t sending teams to Ontario if they think they’re going to be superstars - they turned CPom down at first when they didn’t look like becoming great. Right now Montreal treats Ontario like a feeder school. Maybe Scott is fine with that! But with Montreal being the established #1 school, if he wants his school to be on par then I think turning top international juniors into top seniors is the way to go - because right now he won’t get established great teams. That ruins Montreal’s business model!
Honestly, none of this sounds even remotely true (aside from the Canadian junior champions are Ilderton kids). There's a close very apparent collaboration between the Montreal and Ontario branches. Obviously Montreal branch is way more established, but the synergy between the schools is obvious and Scott often works with Montreal teams as well. If anything Montreal are doing the right thing by letting Ontario branch settle into things with time (which proves itself with the progress of CPom and to a lesser degree Hensen/Lickers). MIDA is a good example of a new school going way too deep over its head by getting several competitive US teams and faltering with many of them. Only B/S seem to have adjusted well to the school and they came in with Greg already as their coach if I remember correctly. Building a school takes time. Roamin have been coaching ice dance for ages (did is a vampire, you can see him in the k&c with the French team all the way back in 2008 worlds and likely before), Marie France and Partice coached very few teams at the beginning (FB/S, Adria and Sara) and then took on more teams (P/C, H/D, P/I, at some point L/LG) until they took on Tessa and Scott. At 2014 Olympics I.AM were training Hurtado/Diaz only, then in 2018 they had H/D, P/C, TS, L/LG. After 2018 it's when they really exploded and by the time we got to 2022 Olympics they had 11 teams at the Olympics.
I.AM Ontario getting time to grow is not them being "feeder school" and I would expect CPom's success which is hopefully on the horizon will make them bigger, especially post 2026 Olympics when teams are making changes.

Tessa Virtue & Scott Moir 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics Team vs Individual Event: Improvements & Analysis
youtube
I’ve been meaning to make an analysis of the improvements Tessa & Scott made from the team event to individual event in Pyeongchang for 2 years now because I have always been so impressed by it. I finally had the time and finished it! Here is the YouTube video along with comparison gifs. I didn’t color any of the gifs to insure that nothing messed with the viewing of their blades and ice marks.
Short Dance: 80. 51 (41.61 TES, 38.90 PCS) vs 83.67 (44.53 TES, 39.14 PCS)
Non-Touching Midline Step Sequence: 10.40 (7.10 BV, 3.30 GOE) vs 11.90 (8.60 BV, 3.30 GOE)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tessa & Scott received level 3 in the team event because Scott’s LFO-Choctaw (LFO to RBI, CW) was not credited due to his unclear right back inside exit edge. All 5 difficult steps and turns were credited for level 4 in the individual event since Scott showed a much clearer right back inside edge. Both received credit for the left forward outside entry edge already, but they also improved both the edge depth and held it longer.
Rhumba Pattern: 5.26 (3.80 BV, 1.46 GOE) vs 6.37 (5.00 BV, 1.37 GOE)
In the team event, Tessa & Scott received level 2 because they only got credit for 1/3 key points. In the individual event, they got level 4 and credit for 3/3 key points.
Key Points 1 & 2 (Lady Steps 11-13, Man Steps 11-13)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tessa did not receive credit for key point 1 in the team event due to not showing a clear enough right back outside edge (step 12). Her right back outside edge was clearer in the double choctaw in the individual event, so she received credit there. Scott received credit for key point 2 in both events.
Key Point 3 (BOTH Lady & Man Steps 16, 1-4 of Pattern Restart)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The flat left forward outside edge of Scott’s LFOIO change of edge (step 3 of the pattern restart) led to “no” on key point 3 in the team event. His left forward inside edge could have been clearer as well. In the individual event, Scott received credit by displaying a much deeper left forward outside edge. He also showed a clearer left forward inside edge and better free leg unison with Tessa. Tessa’s steps were clean in both the team and individual event.
Non-Key Points
Tumblr media
Tessa & Scott showed better free leg unison & height on the creative free leg movement of their left forward outside edge (step 5).
Tumblr media
Tessa & Scott showed bigger ice coverage on their RFI-Three Turn (step 14).
Partial Step Sequence: 11.43 (8.60 BV, 2.83 GOE) vs 11.74 (8.60 BV, 3.14 GOE)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tessa & Scott received level 4 in both the team and individual event as all 5 steps and turns were counted. However, they had higher GOE in the individual event due to superior ice coverage. This is most noticeable when comparing their proximity to the boards on each of their double twizzles.
Transitional Steps
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the team event, Tessa hops her three turn, leading to a loss of balance on her cross roll. Scott’s stability and edge quality is not as good on his cross steps in the team event as it was in the individual event. They executed the transitional steps between their synchronized twizzles and rotational lift perfectly in the individual event.
Free Dance: 118.10 (59.25 TES, 58.85 PCS) vs 122.40 (63.35 TES, 59.05 PCS)
Opening
Tumblr media
In Tessa & Scott’s free dance opening, Scott circles Tessa with an inside spread eagle as she attempts 5 rotations. In the team event, Tessa loses balance and struggles to complete all 5 rotations. They do the Moulin Rouge free dance opening perfectly in the individual event.
Circular Step Sequence: 10.09 (7.10 BV, 2.99 GOE) vs 11.59 (8.60 BV, 2.99 GOE)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the team event, Tessa & Scott received level 3 due to the initial blade placement of Scott’s right back inside edge on his LFO-Swing Choctaw (LFO to RBI, CW) not being clear enough. They received level 4 in the individual event as all 9 steps and turns were credited since Scott showed better initial blade placement on the right back inside edge of his LFO-Swing Choctaw. Although this doesn’t affect base value, he also swung his free leg higher and held the left forward outside edge longer, as well as holding a deeper right back inside edge longer to achieve better unison with the right back inside edge of Tessa’s RBO to RBI change of edge and RBI-Counter (RBI to RFI, CCW).
Rotational Lift: 5.96 (4.50 BV, 1.43 GOE) vs 6.21 (4.50 BV, 1.71 GOE)
Tumblr media
Tessa & Scott changed the position of their rotational lift to look less “suggestive” and more “aesthetically pleasing” in the team event. However, it made the lift much less impressive. Thankfully, they changed it back for the individual event, which led to higher GOE, a more enthusiastic audience response, greater speed, and a cleaner position.
Midline Step Sequence: 9.61 (7.10 BV, 2.51 GOE) vs 11.59 (8.60 BV, 2.99 GOE)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tessa & Scott received level 3 due to the left back outside entry of Tessa’s LBO-Mohawk (LBO to RFO, CW) not being clear enough. They received level 4 in the individual event as all 5 difficult steps and turns were credited. Tessa showed a deeper left back outside entry edge, as well as holding her right forward outside exit edge longer and swinging her free leg higher to achieve better unison with Scott’s free leg on his RFO-Swing Choctaw (RFO to LBI, CCW).

Bex's Book Corner #14
Tumblr media
And we're back!
I am once again doing monthly roundups of the books I've read in 2022. I've set a higher goal for myself this year: 58 books. I got off to a good start in January by reading a total of 6 books. I'm also doing the Popsugar Reading Challenge again because hey, why not?
Here's what I read in January:
1. On Top of Glass by Karina Manta
Karina Manta made history back in 2019 when her essay “I Can’t Hate My Body if I Love Hers” was published in the New York Times. Karina was the first female Team USA figure skater to come out as bisexual back in 2018.
Tumblr media
Her memoir, On Top of Glass, follows up on her essay with the full story of her coming of age as a figure skater and her struggle to find acceptance in a sport that hasn’t always been welcoming. As a lifelong figure skating fan, I found this to be a fascinating read. I loved learning more about skating culture, training, and everything else. Manta’s writing style is lively and engaging. Even when she was struggling with anxiety and body image, she found her way to make a mark on the sport with her partner, Joe Johnson. Together, they became the first known ice dancers where both members of the team were LGBT and both came out while they were still competing. Fun fact: she also went to the prom with Jason Brown!
You can see their final free dance, choreographed by Christopher Dean, on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCugp67NNmU
Popsugar Reading Challenge: A sapphic book (Manta is bisexual) or a book by a Latinx author (Manta’s father is Uruguyan)
Similar Books: Tessa and Scott: Our Journey from Childhood Dream to Gold by Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, One Life by Megan Rapinoe.
Content Warnings: discussion of anxiety, body dysmorphia, and disordered eating.
2. The Excalibur Curse by Kiersten White
This book is the conclusion of the Camelot Rising trilogy. And what a ride it’s been! I read the first instalment, The Guinevere Deception, way back in 2020. I’m a fan of Arthurian retellings and I’ve been very keen to see how the series would end.
In this retelling, Guinevere is a changeling: an unknown entity sent to Camelot by Merlin to protect Arthur with her forbidden magic. Guinevere faces many challenges over the course of the series - most of all, struggling to find a place in a world that would not accept her if they knew who she truly was. Many key figures from Arthurian legend are reimagined here, including Mordred, Morgana, Isolde, and a genderbent version of Lancelot. Just as Arthur has his knights, Guinevere has spent the series cultivating her own group of loyal and extraordinary women. Seeing them take matters into their own hands was extremely satisfying.
Tumblr media
Popsugar Reading Challenge: A book about someone leading a double life.
Similar Books: The Queen’s Rising duology by Rebecca Ross and Seven Endless Forests by April Genevieve Tucholke.
Content Warnings: Kidnapping, stabbing, drowning.
3. Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid
My first audiobook of the year and my second TJR book. I finally gave into the hype last year and read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, which I loved. There’s an interconnectedness between the two books: Mick Riva, the father of the Riva children at the centre of Malibu Rising, was one of the infamous seven husbands. Celia St. James also gets a shoutout.
The story is told in two timelines. It’s 1983, and the grownup Riva children are about to host the party of the year in their beachfront mansion. Between the hours of the day leading up to the party, we get flashbacks of the early years to set the scene. Their parents had a turbulent relationship. One of the kids has a different mother. Their dad was never there. But through it all, the kids had each other. Back in the present, the party starts and drama ensues: the siblings all have secrets. By the end of the party, all their dirty laundry will be aired.
TJR is the master of dual timelines. I was glued to this audio from start to finish.
Popsugar Reading Challenge: A book set in the 1980’s.
Similar Books: The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid, Concrete Rose by Angie Thomas.
Content Warnings: alcoholism, drowning, parental abandonment, fire.
4. People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry
This was one of those books I meant to read last year and didn’t get to. It’s also my third Emily Henry book. Like Malibu Rising before it, People We Meet on Vacation is told in dual timelines. In the present day, it’s been two years since the friendship breakup of Poppy and Alex: a pair of millennials who have been friends since college. They’ve gone on vacation together every year since they met. But two years ago, something happened. Chronological snippets of their past vacations are interspersed between the chapters and eventually a pattern begins to emerge. I kind of guessed what it was that broke them up, but let me tell you: the eventual reconciliation was excellent. Emily Henry nailed the best friends to lovers trope. And lucky for me, she has another book coming out this year!
Popsugar Reading Challenge: A book set during a holiday.
Similar Books: Beach Read by Emily Henry, The Ex-Talk by Rachel Lynn Solomon, and Much Ado About You by Suzanne Young.
Content Warnings: sexual content, brief mention of drug usage.
5. Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones
One of those classics I’ve been meaning to read for a long time. I watched the movie adaptation a couple of years ago and I loved it. I find that when I watch the movie first, I often like it better than the book - if I ever get around to reading the book at all. But this is one of those instances where I liked both equally. The movie is gorgeous and heartfelt. The book has a slightly different vibe, but it’s also enjoyable.
Tumblr media
There are some subplots that were cut from the film and because we get to spend more time with the characters, we really get to see them develop. I loved Sophie in both iterations. She’s a young woman turned into an old lady by a witch’s spell and she gives zero forks. She’s finally able to express herself. Howl is more rakish than he was in the movie, but I enjoyed him too. There were several subplots from the book that got cut from the movie, so it was nice to get more backstory about Sophie and Howl’s families as well. This ended up being one of those instances where I enjoyed the book and the movie equally.
Popsugar Reading Challenge: A book with an onomatopoeia in the title
Similar Books: Stardust by Neil Gaiman, A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. LeGuin
Content Warnings: death of a parent (off page)
6. Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim
I’m always here for retellings - especially fairytale retellings. Elizabeth Lim’s Six Crimson Cranes is loosely inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s Wild Swans, infused with East Asian folklore. It also takes place in the same fictional universe as her earlier Spin the Dawn duology, but you don’t need to read one to understand the other. The heroine of the story is Princess Shiori, the only sister in a family of royal brothers. She possesses magic in a land where magic has been forbidden. Her stepmother also has magic, and when she finds out about Shiori’s powers, she curses her and her brothers. But not everything is what it seems.
Shiori goes on a journey reminiscent of a Disney princess. I’ve always loved some of Hans Christian Andersen’s lesser known stories - The Snow Queen was a favourite of mine before Frozen came along. The Wild Swans is another story I’ve hoped to see a retelling of and I finally got it with Six Crimson Cranes. It preserves just enough of the original story while also being its own thing. Elizabeth Lim nailed it. Now I’m impatiently awaiting the sequel!
Popsugar Reading Challenge: A book about a secret
Similar Books: Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim, Jade Fire Gold by June C.L. Tan, The Swan Kingdom by Zoe Marriott.
Content Warnings: death of a parent (off page), animal death, blood, fire.
That's it for January! I'm two books ahead of my goal for this year, so we'll see how it goes.

What do you think of so many Moirs in the new satellite IAM school? I know they all coach but like not elite level right? Or is this temp till Scott can recruit more help?
I think it’s not really a surprise; the Moirs are a coaching family and they’ve all kept a skate in the rink.  I don’t know what their individual, literal coaching qualifications are, though of course they’ve used them for Western University, for synchro, for CanSkate (the wee littles and up) and of course, the ice dance teams we’ve all taken note of, now that Scott’s done some choreo.  But it’s entirely possible that any or all of them have passed coaching levels for beyond all these.  Scott is listed as the ‘head coach’, and I suppose we may never know how the work or responsibilities break down for sure.
I don’t particularly mean this towards you, anon, but it was something I was thinking about already; which is that I feel like people are already making mountains out of their expectations for this.  I mean, I could be wrong (I’ve been many times in the past), but I’m anticipating that it won’t be a sudden massive number of super-elite athletes.  Their regular skaters, and perhaps some new additions (though even that may wait until things settle down some with lockdowns and such), but schools can take some time to get established.  He’s got an extra boost, being associated with IAM, and you know, 5 Olympic medals.  But it’s a big deal to switch up coaching, training cities, etc. and skaters may take their time.  As well, quite frankly, even when you have senior skaters, many of them are not truly in contention for international podium results.  Even Gadbois didn’t ‘make it big’ until Papadakis and Cizeron’s 2014/2015 season and caused everyone to take notice and start the unexpected Montreal boom.  After all, until then, their skaters were 13th, 16th, and 29th at 2014 Worlds.  (Huh, I’m not sure I ever noticed that while PC jumped from 13 to 1 in one year, FB/S jumped from 29 - final not reached - to 11.)
Anyway, sorry for the ramble, but my point - coaching staff may change, because that happens, but we shouldn’t be assuming that this isn’t exactly what they want, right now, and we should be careful (again) with assuming that our expectations and ambitions coincide with theirs.  (And me included - for all I know, Scott wants a team of his own to win 2022.)

Olympic great Scott Moir credits coaches-turned-colleagues for rediscovering his love of skating
Gold medallist now head of Ice Academy of Montreal's satellite program in London, Ont.
September 1, 2022
Tumblr media
Scott Moir, seen here during an unveiling of his Canada's Walk of Fame Hometown Star in Ilderton, Ont., in 2019, has transitioned from his figure skating career to coaching and is now head of the Ice Academy of Montreal's satellite program in London, Ont. (Geoff Robins/The Canadian Press)
Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir came out of retirement to compete at the 2018 Olympics with a "stone cold" focus."T and I . . . we wanted to win, and nothing else," Moir said.
Their ferocious gold-medal pursuit led to a fierce push and pull with Montreal coaches Marie-France Dubreuil and Patrice Lauzon, whose focus was on the process and not the outcome.
"They helped us understand that [gold] actually wasn't the goal. Our goal was to be the best we could possibly be . . . but the double-edged sword of it is it allows you to be your best as well, when you have your priorities and you're connected with the joy of skating and why you started skating," Moir said Wednesday at Skate Canada's national team training camp.
"And the higher you get, the higher the pressure is. And you forget that so easily."
Virtue and Moir retired after winning gold at the 2018 Games as the most decorated ice dancers in history.
Dubreuil, Lauzon serve as inspiration
Moir hadn't considered coaching as a career, but he was so sold on the philosophy instilled by Dubreuil and Lauzon at the Ice Academy of Montreal (I.AM), he became the head of their satellite program in London, Ont.
"My time in Montreal changed . . . well, it changed my life. I know Tess feels the same way," Moir said. "I fell back in love with the sport again."
Of the 23 dance teams at the Beijing Olympics, Dubreuil and Lauzon, who captured back-to-back world silver medals before retiring in 2007, coached 10 of them at I.AM, including gold medallists Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron of France.
Dubreuil, Lauzon and former French skater Romain Haguenauer co-founded the academy in 2014. They had one team in the Sochi Olympics that year. They had four teams four years later in Pyeongchang, including Virtue and Moir.
In Beijing, country allegiances seemed to melt away between the 10 Montreal-based teams. Instead there were plenty of hugs and high-fives.
"We take care of the human being more than anything else," Lauzon said in Beijing. "I think that's what draws people in."
'His love for skating has not faded'
Haley Sales and Nikolas Wamsteeker, who are at this week's national team camp, are one of Moir's dance teams.
The two, who've twice been fourth at the Canadian championships, described Moir as a positive, high-energy coach who spends most of his time on the ice rather than behind the boards.
"His love for skating has not faded," Wamsteeker said.
They've noticed a shift in their skating since moving to London a year ago.
"The really unique thing about having a coach so fresh off the circuit was interesting, and more in tune with the modern kind of ice dance," said Sales. "I would say we've learned a lot more of the artistic side of skating, which we felt like we really needed."
"I'm starting to realize more and more of [Moir's influence] in my skating, watching the videos from years past it wasn't there," added Wamsteeker. "And it's hard to put my finger on it, but it's a fluidity, it's performance."
They're one of nine dance couples based in London. There are another 17 in the Montreal program.
While there's been criticism about coaching skaters who compete for countries other than Canada, Moir said the program works for the Canadians as well.
"We see the strength in the numbers . . . we believe that it makes our Canadian kids better, stronger," Moir said. "There are some people that it doesn't work for, which is fine. But usually it is life changing, and in this day and age, we need sport done in the right way more than ever. That's the whole commitment we made to each other. And hopefully, we can continue to uphold it."
'It's the little victories that I find extremely rewarding'
The 34-year-old Moir recently married longtime girlfriend Jaclyn Mascarin after COVID-19 twice threw a wrench into wedding plans. They have an 18-month-old daughter.
Moir's mom Alma and his aunt Carol, who were Virtue and Moir's first coaches, run the nearby Ilderton Skating Club, and can provide a developmental feeder system for dancers.
"So they're bringing up little teams, and they're also involved in the I.AM Ontario campus. So it's a nice little crossover that helps us," Moir said.
Moir, who often reaches out to Virtue if he has a skating question he can't figure out, said there's a big sense of satisfaction in the success of his athletes. But it comes in the moments away from competition.
"It's the little victories, and they mostly happen in training when you have a day and everything's clicking, and you're like, 'Oh, my God, I am actually having an impact!' I do have those moments," he said. "Sometimes it's the actual skills that they're getting, such as doing a perfect rocker turn that we've been working on forever.
"Most of the time, it's how the kids behave, and their skills that they'll take on to do whatever they do in the rest of their life — little things like being vulnerable, giving everything they have and even showing up on time and writing an email that they're supposed to.
"It's the little victories that I find extremely rewarding."

How did I not remember just how bad P/C come off in this article?!
https://ici.radio-canada.ca/sports/podium/107/guillaume-cizeron-gabriella-papadakis-patinage-artistique-danse-jeux-olympiques-pyeongchang-tessa-virtue-scott-moir-medaille-robe
There are a lot of things about it that bugs me, but the one thing that really got me was them questioning the gap in the FD score Tessa and Scott got between the team and the individual events.
“The dress, the composition of the panel of judges which some questioned, the fact that they had many more points than in the team competition for the same programs.”
The 4 points gap was due to them getting only level 3 for the two step sequences, once they got both up to level 4 it was an automatic 3 more points in base value which makes the real gap only a point of improvement. And the only person who questioned the judging was skating #1 corruption master - Didier. The petty in me would love to see them lose the gold again, not gonna lie.
