@royalarchivist your dms seem to be turned off but I took some timestamp notes for Quackity's very late night stream! in case you can use these for your timestamp archive
6:33 "I need to go really far away before I explain what I'm doing here. Okay?" (teleports to his Richarlyson area)
7:45 "all admins, now that the eggstatistics have been posted, are gone" he also says he thinks Forever is using an autoclicker which is illegal; Q wants to break rules to see what'll happen, so he reads them all out:
do not abuse glitches or game mechanics
do not utilise unintended minecraft features such as iron golem farms, dupe glitches, villager breeding, gold farms, tnt machines - "I don't know how to do any of that"
do not travel to the end dimension, it's currently locked - "I don't know how to find that either"
"I'm gonna save rule 4"
no hacking
use common sense and try not to ruin other content creators' content "I could go into badboyhalo's room and mess up his content but he's not streaming right now so that doesn't count"
if you find a bug or a game-breaking mechanic please communicate it to staff - "I know none as of now"
you are allowed to play off-stream, but try not to make significant progress - "I could grind all night. actually that wouldn't be offstream that doesn't make any sense"
you cannot get more than two rows of hearts - "anyone know where [the hearts-providing statue] might be? metagaming is against the rules so I'm already breaking a rule here" -> he decides to go to Tallulah's garden to use her statue
12:20 he breaks into Wilbur & Tallulah's house to look for the statue
13:00 he gets himself six more hearts "this is fucking fun, what the hell, no admins are on, this is fun"
13:36 4. do not travel to the nether, it's currently locked "well to hell with that" - he goes back to the Richarlyson place and wants to make a Nether portal because "I just wanna see what happens"; he doesn't want to use the favela Nether portal because he "doesn't want to be near there"
14:50 BBH notices in chat that q is online - q responds "ignore me" and starts building a nether portal
18:11 (after yelling at chat for making fun of him about his limited nether portal knowledge) "tiktok's gonna have a field day with that one. they're gonna say like… quackity explodes on stream"
19:28 (after misplacing obsidian) "I misclicked. It can happen with JuanaFlippa, it can happen with me."
23:34 he tries to enter the Nether portal and is teleported back to spawn instead, which gives him the advancements We Need To Go Deeper and Subspace Bubble since he's so far away from spawn. he immediately starts wondering if there's a way to glitch it and make it send him to the Nether anyway
26:40 while he's breaking his portal to rebuild it somewhere else, one of the faceless Cucurucho construction workers shows up and starts punching him, then gives him a book & quill saying "stop breaking the rules!" he asks where the "normal" Cucurucho is and says "can I just try?"
28:10 "what are you? what the fuck are you?" he tries to start breaking the portal again but they keep punching him
28:40 he attacks and kills the Cucurucho construction worker (BBH in chat: o_O what the fudge, quackity what are you doing) and loots their corpse, notably finding 113 Netherrack, 7 ancient debris and 11 quartz in their inventory. He logs off because he killed an admin, saying he'll go back tomorrow and sell the Nether blocks they were carrying to Foolish; he says he'll be playing with Vegetta at 12pm PST, and ends stream

#𝟏𝟎𝟎𝐃𝐀𝐘𝐒𝐑𝐄𝐈𝐍𝐕𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍
Although I am (extremely) new to the self improvement community on tumblr. I have seen the #𝟏𝟎𝟎𝐃𝐀𝐘𝐒𝐑𝐄𝐈𝐍𝐕𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 challenge from @dreamdolldiary come by a few times amoung self improvement creators. Because of my curiosity, I have finally read the challenge and I immediately knew that this was the ideal challenge for me to start my self improvement journey! The "goal" of this challenge is to start with holding yourself accounteble and to build healthy habits.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
1. Pick a number of goals (3-4, both small and large) for every aspect of your life. 🩰 Physical I follow my weekly work out-plan. I eat healthy. I use my skincare consistantly. I go to bed before 10 pm. 🩰 Mental I make time for self love. I plan out my day and follow my plan. I journal daily. 🩰 Emotional I do the things that bring me happiness and fulfillment. I write the things that bother me down. I allow myself to feel my emotiong fully. 🩰 Studies I plan out all the work i am supposed to do. I do schoolwork daily. I keep up with all the tests & assingnments. I am productive in school. 🩰 Personal I compliment the people around me. I spend more time on crochet, knitting & sewing. I start dancing again. I have strated learning how to lay tarot cards. 🩰 Spiritual I do more reserch on my crystals. I make nature walks. I meditate daily. 🩰 Finance I plan out my winter warderobe (+budget). I sell my old clothes. I learned more on healthy spending habits. 🩰 Habits I start following my morning & night routines. I practise gratefullness. I read more often. 🩰 Skills I am able concentrate longer. I learn to let go of anything that doesn't serve me. I learned to speak up about my preferences.
Tumblr media
2. Setting up reasonable time blocks for these goals. Revamp your schedule to fit your goals around your life. Morning: 6.10/ 7.00 am - Wake up and drink a glass of water. 6.15/ 7.05 am - Meditate and stretch. 6.30/ 7.20 am - Journal and make a to do list. 6.40/ 7.30 am - Make my bed. 6.45/ 7.35 am - Put on my clothes on. 6.50/ 7.40 am - Brush my teeth and skincare. 7.00 / 7.50 am - Eat breakfast 7.30/ 8.20 am - Go to school This is the morning routine I will be doing on school days and sundays. Waking up at the same time very day isn't something that helps me accieve my greatest good. So, i would rather sleep for an extra 50 minutes when it's possible. On saturdays i will wake up at 4.45 am (for work) and i won't meditate, journal or make my bed. I will make my bed and journal when I get back from work (1 pm).
Night: 8:30 pm - Clean my room 8:40 pm - Put together a cute outfit for tomorrow. 8:50 pm - Pack my bag for tomorrow. 8:55 pm - Journal. 9:05 pm - Cleaning myself up. (Skincare Toothbrushing, ect.) 9:20 pm - Do some yoga. 9:40 pm - put my pajama's on. 9:45 pm - Read, if I feel like it.
Study routine: 1. Clean up my study space. 2. Grab a drink. 3. Make a plan. 4. Study. This is what i will do to motivate myself to start with studying. On Ater i get back from school on Monday to Friday, I will do this and study for about 3 hours, after eating a healthy snack and drinking some water, while writing my thoughts down. On Saturday and Sunday I will follow this when I plan to study.
In the Weekend I will get bigger tasks done and focus on my hobbies and selfcare. Saturdaynight will be a selfcare night, where I go on a walk, put on a face mask, take a bath (I love them), paint my nails, reflect on my past week and do an extra long yoga session (and maybe a studio ghibili movie night 💗).
While I make a studyplan and make sure I am up to date on schoolwork on Sundaynight.
Tumblr media
3. Setting up a system so you can actually stick to those goals. I will journal daily, and reflect on my day and smaller tasks. I will write weekly updates, where I will refect on my goals and set up new ones for the week. You can view my updates when you click on the following links:
🌷 Week 1 🌸 Week 2 🌷 Week 3 🌸 Week 4 🌷 Week 5 🌸 Week 6 🌷 Week 7 🌸 Week 8 🌷 Week 9 🌸 Week 10 🌷 Week 11 🌸 Week 12 🌷 Week 12 🌸 Week 13 🌷 Week 14 🌸 Week 15

Mike stared at the phone, almost burning a hole through it. All of Friday and no text, and now it's Saturday the mid afternoon and still no text.
‘Was I not her type?’ Mike's mood fell a bit but he shook it off. ‘It's also the weekend, I'm sure she worked all week and is probably relaxing.’
He was not wrong, you were laying in bed doing a facemask and reading a book. Your phone buzzed.
‘Have you texted Mr. Sexy???’
You rolled your eyebrows at your friends words.
‘No not yet.’
‘:( why not!?’
‘Bc 1 im still thinking it over okay? Hes a big brother of one of the student im sure that like taboo or wtv
2 im nervous okay jeez.’
:| stop being a pussy y/n so what hes a BROTHER, yes the guardian but its not as bad at a parent or a married one at that.
DO IT Y/N!’
The paper was right in front of you, acting as a bookmark. You bit your bottom lip. ‘I mean she has a point, he's not a parent, and not married.’
It still weighed on your mind though. The numbers were burned into the back of your head now from how often you were staring at them.
You huffed a breath out, ‘FUCK IT!’
‘Mike?’
There was an immediate reply. ‘Ms.L/N?’
‘Yes, but y/n is fine :)’
Mike's heart fluttered the tiniest bit at the smiley face.
‘Cool :) y/n it is.’
You giggled and kicked your feet.
‘So Mike, what do you like to do?’
‘Relax mostly, nothing beats just resting’
‘Are you sure you're not actually over 40?’
‘I am waiting for that age to come so I can just spend it at home and blame it on my age.’
Hours and hours passed by as you learned more about Mike and he learned more about you. A thought popped into your mind as he told you his favorite cartoon.
‘Do you have any plans for tomorrow?’
Mike stared at the text. ‘Holy fuck,’ was what he thought.
He typed and erased over 3 different messages before landing on something that was fine.
‘No, not much I was gonna run some errands while Abby was with a babysitter since she want to buy like everything.
Why?’
‘Um well if you weren't too busy, I was wondering if you wanted to go to the diner to hang out for a bit.’
Seconds passed, they felt like hours to you though.
‘Yeah that sounds good. 1 sound good?’
‘Yeah perfect :).’
The conversation died down a bit as it was nearing 10 pm, and both of you were busy with cleaning up. You said your goodnights to each other and both slept soundly, dreaming of tomorrow.
The next day rolled around, bright and semi early. It was 10 a.m. you sent Mike a goodmorning, and started for the day. No one was home, so you made a quick breakfast, an omelet, toast, and some fruits for right now before eating lunch with Mike.
You put a face mask on as you listened to your cassette. You lounged around til 12 to get ready.
You did a brushed out fox eye, with mascara and a little foundation. You had a cashmere crop top and a dark brown folded skirt. You put on a leather jacket and your mary janes. You left hair down, put a soft brown lip liner and red with gloss. You opted for minimal jewelry, just a gold chain.
It was 12: 40, your stomach growled a bit. On your way down you grabbed a snack pack and headed out. You ran back in for your purse and keys, then headed out.
You got there at 12:50, as you looked to your ight you saw Mike already sitting at a both. He smiled and gave an awkward wave, which you found a bit endearing.
You walked to him, he stood up and offered to take your jacket off. You accepted and the two of you sat.
The silence was a bit awkward.
Mike tried to break it. “So how long have you been an after-school teacher?”
“Hmm I just started but I did do the summer program for the last years.”
“Oh do you like?”
“Um yeah mostly. There's some bad days of course but that could be said about any job.”
“Yeah that makes sense.”
“What about you, how long have you been a stockman?”
“2 months.”
“Oh cool. How long have you been working in general?”
“Since I was 16, so about 11 years.”
Silence hung in the air.
“Wait. You're 27?”
Mike nodded his head. “Yeah… why?”
He huffed and laughed, “What are you like 18?”
His smile dropped and eyes widened as you gave a slight nod. “Wait, are you serious?”
Again another nod. “I thought you said you worked the summer program?”
“Yeah, as a volunteer the first year and then from there as a group leader.”
“Wow. Okay.”
You bit your lip. “I'm sorry, I didn't think our age gap was that um wide. I thought you were max 23.”
“I thought you were at least 22.”
The two of you were silent again.
You're french toast was served as was his sandwich.
Plates and forks were clinking, as the two of you ate. “So…” Mike trailed off.
“So… if you still want this to continue… I would  as well…”
“Are you sure? It's a whole 9 year difference y/n.” Mike said softly.
You shyly nodded, “Yeah I mean we're both adults, albeit I am newer to it. We can take it slower than usual, so we both feel comfortable.”
Mike looked at you, at your full face as you smiled and how your eyes turned into half moons. You warmed as you noticed his stare. He admired how beautiful you look.
“Yeah. I'd like that. But slow like really slow y/n.”
You giggled and he smiled at you.

24 hours before the wedding.
September arrived, quicker than either expected and their wedding was going to happen…in a matter of hours. Both were nervous, but excited. And today the wedding tradition started: the bride and groom would be separated until the wedding, Beatrice would stay with her parents and Rooster would remain at home with Jolene. Both would have their bachelor/bachelorette parties in a few minutes, in fact Beatrice was the one who’d leave the house first much to Rooster’s disappointment.
She looked over her shoulder to where her fiancé - soon to be husband - was leaning against the doorframe with his hands inside his jeans pockets, looking less than pleased, “We’ll only be able to see each other tomorrow at the ceremony?” she smiles apologetically while fixing her hair in a ponytail, “I mean,I know it’s tradition and such but do we have to?”
“I don’t want to either,Roos.” she replies, framing the bangs around her face before turning to him, “But if we don’t, my parents are going to drag me out either way.” Beatrice’s feet take her closer to him and she wraps her arms around his middle and her chin between his pecs to tilt her head up, “Hopefully it won’t take too long.”
Bradley frowns, rubbing the side of her face, “Yeah.” he leans down to kiss her forehead, his mustache tickling the skin, “At least we’ll have our honeymoon the very next day, I guess that can help the absence.”
“Absence makes the heart grow fonder.” she whispers, her soft breathing hitting his neck and collarbones, his own eyes closing with his lips still against her scalp, a smile slowly growing on his face. He presses a few other kisses on her forehead, then her cheekbones then her nose, before he touches them together, “...are you nervous?”
They were going to be married the very next day, after all.
He thinks on it for a second, looking to the side in thought, “...a little.” he admits, the side of his mouth quirking in a grin, “Are you?”
“A little.” They both laugh at her response, her hands coming up to gently touch the fabric of his white tee, “I guess it’s to be expected.” she whispers, rubbing her thumb and forefinger on the edge of his top, feeling the seam against her fingertips, “...I guess I’m more excited than nervous.”
Bradley smirks, leaning his head back to kiss the side of her face, right underneath her jawline, “Me too.” he was about to do more but the furious honking outside their house, followed by the ‘BABES!!’ made him groan and stop, “Your ride is here.” Beatrice giggles, looking up at his unimpressed face and cupping his cheeks, “Is there a rule for kissing before the wedding? Is that bad luck?”
“I don’t think so?”
“Good.” because his lips immediately land on hers, making a soft moan escape her throat and a smile form on her lips as she wraps her arms around his neck and his own around her waist to pick her up. She wasn’t complaining, considering they’d only see each other tomorrow at the ceremony, it seems fitting that they’d kiss each other ‘goodbye’.
Except that nothing with Rooster was that simple, especially when he pressed her back against the wall and her legs wrapped around his waist, the kissing intensifying exponentially with his hand sliding under her top and her own running up his scalp. Her soft moaning was music to his ears, his hands going down to her–
“Bea!” the doorbell rang continuously, Shells’ voice breaking the reverie and making the two of them look to the door, “Babes! Come on! We’re going to be late!” followed by more doorbell pressing, enough to make Rooster groan in annoyance and reluctantly put Beatrice down. The brunette just smiles up at him, and his flushed lips and mussed up hair, reassuring him they’d see each other again soon.
She disappears into the living room to say bye to Jolene, whose tail thumped on the couch vigorously, licking her owner who laughed in response. Once she did that, she grabbed her bag and sunglasses, smiling at her fiancé “Well,I’m going..see you in a few hours. Have fun with your party!” she says quickly, hearing the Buick’s horn blare again, waving Rooster goodbye and stepping out of the house.
Rooster sighed, approaching the windows on each side of the door to watch Beatrice enter the car - after saying hi to the other women there- looking back at the window to wave at him, earning a wave back and a little smile before the Buick disappeared from his view. He tsks, sliding his hands inside his jeans pockets and looking down at Jolene whose huge head nudged itself between his leg and the window, trying to see the car just like he was, “Well…there’s me and you now,Jojo.” he says and the pittie tilts her head up at him, “Wanna join me in my bachelor party? I think the guys wouldn’t mind you there.”
Jolene’s little whine breaks a laugh out of him, who leans down to pet her head and walks away from the window with the pittie following him, her trimmed claws clicking on the floor.
Meanwhile, Shells drove Beatrice and half of the bridesmaids to the Sun’s Retreat, the bride to be watched with amazement as the large white building with giant windows and palm trees came into view - and Evelyn and the other bridesmaids waiting for them outside - “Do you have the flier?” Shells asked and Bea nodded, grabbing it from her purse to show the blonde, “Good, it’s all they need to know you are the bachelorette. And your name, of course.”
Beatrice holds the piece of paper as if it contained secret information, fearing that if she lets it go it’d fly away and they wouldn’t be able to enjoy it. The parking lot is right in front of the spa and there are two spaces saved up for the Bride and her bridesmaids.
As soon as Shells parks her car, Evelyn,Nat and Halo look up from their conversation to see them, “Finally.” Evelyn smiles, watching Beatrice step out of the car - her eyes still wide in amazement - “We were thinking you weren’t coming.”
“I’m sorry, I was um…” she licks her lips, recalling what happened minutes ago, “Getting everything ready.”
Her taller friend didn’t believe her, but didn’t say anything either, just wrapped her arms around Beatrice in a hug as the brunette got closer. After a few seconds of greeting everyone, Beatrice led the group up the stairs that led to the front doors, looking back at the horizon and seeing the view of San Diego below them, they were so far from everything.
Beatrice pushed the doors open, holding the little flier in her hand and approaching the woman at the spa’s front desk, “Hello um,” she gently slid the paper for her to see, “I…um,I’m the bachelorette.” she didn’t know how else to explain it and yet she felt awkward doing so. The lady looked down at the flier than at her, smiling and asking her full name and the names of the others.
It takes a few minutes for everything to be checked, but eventually they are given the green light to go inside and change into the robes. Robes that were so soft it was like a cloud was covering their bodies.
They were led up the stairs to the private rooms, where they’d start the treatments. They could choose which one to do first, looking at Beatrice as she looks at the options on the ‘menu’ she was given, “I…I think a massage might work.” she says after a few seconds of silence, giving her friends a small grin before they were led away.
Beatrice couldn’t believe how Shells pulled this off, she wasn’t complaining, honestly she was doing a great job as her maid of honor. Since there were a lot of women together, they had to be separated into groups of three and four - since there were seven of them.- into two rooms that were only separated by a divisor which would make it easier for them to talk if there was any need to.
The view was amazing, once again they could see the San Diego horizon from the hearse as they all lie down, their robes pooled by the waist as they rested their cheeks on the tiny pillow, “Look at that view.” Bea hears Shells comment, whistling quietly, “It’s almost as worth it as the massage.”
“Well, it is nice.” Beatrice smiles, supporting her chin on her folded arms as she hears the masseuses getting ready. She had never gotten a full massage before, the only time she went to a spa with her nonna all she did was put on mud masks and have her nails painted, “I don’t think I–” she inhales sharply when she feels the woman’s hand on her legs, pressing the muscle, “I-I’ve seen - ow - such a pretty view.”
“Isn’t it? I knew you’d like it.” Shells says with a prideful grin, one that turns into a minimal grimace when her back thighs are pressed on. Meanwhile Evelyn had her eyes closed, thoroughly enjoying the feeling and unlike her friends, only letting out sighs of relief. On the corner of the room, Nat’s quiet noises of pleasure and complaint added to the sounds of joints popping and to the harp music that played on loop on the speakers.
Beatrice however was enjoying it as much as everyone else, eventually letting her eyes drop shut as the continuous rubbing of her muscles slowly lulled her to a short lived nap. She did fall asleep for a little bit, her friends noticing but saying nothing since she’s been so over the place for the wedding these past months, deciding to talk amongst themselves instead.
She had no dreams, she could still hear some of what was being talked about around her, her body was so relaxed she could feel herself melting into the hearse at any moment.
She didn’t know how long she closed her eyes, but by the time she opened them, the ladies were finished with the massage and were ushering them to the mud baths. Beatrice blinked hard, closing the robe and rubbing her hands on her eyes, “I guess I napped for a bit.” she was still slurring her words just a bit, giving her friends a nervous smile as she hopped down from the hearse.
Her body felt…soft, incredibly soft. Like there was air every time she walked instead of solid ground but she didn’t lose her balance. Since the mud baths only allowed two people each room, they had to separate yet again, this time Beatrice and Shells were the ones instead.
The smell of the mud baths was actually not as bad, there was the obvious smell of sulfur but something else, a fragrance was actually floating in the air. The ladies in the room gave the two privacy to remove their robes after putting their hair up, then slowly climbing onto the warm tub “Oh, shit this is warm.” Shells yelps as Beatrice slowly lowers herself into it, feeling a pressure pushing her back, the mud was so dense it felt like she was floating.
“This is really good.” the brunette whispers, disappearing under the mud until it touches her shoulders, giving the woman responsible for the bath a little wave when she left the room. Beatrice turned to Shells, whose head was leaned back on the small teal colored cushion on the back of the tub, “How’s it?”
“I should be asking you that, bride-to-be. How’s it?”
Bea inhaled deeply, the smell of sulfur and the floral scent entering her nose, “...I’m loving it, Shells, thank you.” she grins, getting comfortable inside the tub as the mud surrounds her like a cocoon, “I really appreciate you doing this to me.”
Shells chuckles, removing the hand from under the mud to wave her off, “It’s fine, you are my best friend.” she pauses, looking ahead with her smile faltering, “..You know…” Beatrice turns her head to the blonde in question, “I don’t think I ever told you how much you meant to me…when we met at Northride, well, I wasn’t expecting you to actually befriend me. I thought that it’d be like ‘oh this crazy girl wants to be my friend? That’s fine,I can handle it for a few months.” she chuckles almost sadly, “You were the first one who didn’t leave.”
Beatrice stared at Shells with her eyes wide, “Shells, you never told me that.”
“I didn’t know how to say it to you.” she shrugs the best she could with the mud around her shoulders, “And, you know, eventually we met Ev and the others and then you met my aunt and Melia. And I met your parents and some of your siblings…and…you know, I really care about you. I really do, Bea. You are like…the sister I never had.”
Beatrice’s eyes were stinging with tears but she couldn’t wipe her eyes because of the mud around her limbs, so she just sniffled and blinked hard to make the tears fall faster, “Wow Shells..I-I…I don’t even know what to say.”
“You don’t have to say anything, babes.” Shells smiles and her own eyes are glinting, “I’m happy for you,I genuinely am happy for you. And I knew from the moment I met Rooster you two would be perfect for each other.”
Beatrice sniffles again, giving her friend a teary smile “Yeah?”
“Oh, absolutely, first time I saw him I thought of you. It was just a matter of time and when you wanted to find a job? That’s how I set my plan in motion.”
“Your plan in motion,” Bea giggles, the tears no longer falling as she adjusted herself on the tub, “Well, your plan went very well, don’t you think?”
Shells laughs, tossing her head back when she does so, giving her friend a knowing look, “I just had to push a bit, everything else was on you two kids. It took a long time but now look at you, soon to be Mrs.Bradshaw.” Beatrice’s cheeks redden, her eyes looking down at the mud bath’s surface, watching the tiny bubbles pop with interest.
“Does that mean you’ll soon be Mrs.Floyd?” at that Shells laughed again, even harder, “What? You love him, don’t you?”
“I love my sugarloaf, don’t get me wrong.” Beatrice was surprised at the sudden nickname tossed in the middle, “But…we might wait a little longer, I’m not in a hurry, neither is Bob, so.” the sentence ends with a shrug and another smirk thrown Beatrice’s way, “Evelyn however, I don’t know…Hangman seems eager to pop the question.”
“I heard that!” comes Evelyn’s voice from the beyond, making the two women look around them, “The walls aren’t that thick, I can hear everything you guys are saying.”
Both Beatrice and Shells looked at one another, before their faces contorted, trying to hold back their laughter with no success, cackling at the commentary like children.
-
“Can I say?” Beatrice’s eyebrow arches when she hears Nat’s voice, “I’ve been a bridesmaid once to my sister but she never gave me a full spa day.”
All of them were now having a full facial treatment, hair treatment and mani pedi in a room with a pool in the middle, surrounded fragrant flowers and peaceful music, with glasses of white wine next to them. Beatrice chuckles, her eyes closed because of the cucumbers on top of them, hair up in a towel after being throroughly washed, “Shells is the one to thank, she managed to pull all of this off.”
“Yeah, about that,”Carmen’s voice adds, “How did you pull this off,Shells? This isn’t easy to do.”
“I have connections. Is all I can say.” the blonde giggles, ‘oooh’ing when she sees one of the women bringing strawberries over, popping one in her mouth and immediately trying to stop the dribble, “Oh it’s juicy!”
“I think it’s great.” Evelyn says, smiling at the cold cloth being gently rubbed over her cheekbones, “I think we all deserved a good spa day and if I know our bride to be, she’d want that as well.” which was true, Beatrice couldn’t imagine a better bachelorette party but one with her friends.
It was Halo’s time to speak then, “It’s really fun,” she sips the wine with a soft hum, fixing the towel on her head before it falls over, “Not only we’ll be glowing at the wedding, we are also relaxed? Couldn’t hope for anything better.”
Beatrice smiles hearing them talk, her hands folded on top of her lap as the cooling mask is still on her face,as were the cucumbers. Her skin care routine was much more simple than what she had here, but she couldn’t complain, her face felt so incredibly hydrated and soft she was sure it’d be shining by the time it was over, “I’m just happy you guys are having fun.” she grins, taking in a deep breath, “I hope Roos is too.”
“I’m sure he is.” Nat adds, “The boys are taking him to a brewery then bar hopping, I told them to not get him too drunk before your wedding. It’d be horrible to have your groom be carried all the way into the venue.”
The women laughed, especially Beatrice who was in reality, missing him terribly. It was very silly, she could handle being without him for months but not for a few hours? Maybe it was because of what this absence meant, she’d only see him by the time of the ceremony and that would take…a few hours. It wasn’t her fault!
Beatrice blinked once she felt the cucumber slices being removed from her eyes, with the cooling mask following. Her face felt tight and smelled delicious, she thanked the woman who removed the facial treatment looking down at her freshly painted nails as well. Nothing too intense, just a light pink almost nude color, but something she felt it’d work since she couldn’t remember the last time she had her nails painted professionally.
“How do you feel?” Evelyn asks on the comfortable white stretcher next to Beatrice.
The brunette sighed, biting her lower lip, “...over the moon.” she laughs, “That’s…how I feel all the time lately.”
Evelyn’s gaze softened, “Good.” her brown eyes followed the lady out of the room and she sent Shells a look, “Now, I know it’s usual for the gifts to be given during the wedding, but,” Beatrice looks up when their blonde friend closes the door behind the women, suddenly grabbing a box that was somehow hidden behind a flower pot.
Beatrice looks at all of them, who now were sitting up and following Shells and Evelyn, almost surrounding Beatrice, “What are you guys doing?”
“Here, it’s just something we felt you’d like.”
Beatrice furrows her brows, grabbing the medium sized box to have a better look, it seems heavy…she hums, gently pulling on the bow and letting it fall to the sides before lifting the lid. Beatrice widens her eyes, looking from the box to her bridesmaids with her lips parted “Oh, guys…” she smiles sweetly, pulling out the piece of clothing with her smile never wavering.
It was a jacket, an aviator jacket, with embroidery on the back. But not any embroidery, it was the depiction of a rooster and the words ‘Mrs.Bradshaw’ in curved white thread right below it, “We figured you’d need one.” comes Nat’s voice from her left, “It might get cold and you know, brides use that.”
Beatrice couldn’t stop staring at it. It hit her, finally, that this was real, this was happening, she is going to become Mrs.Bradshaw in a matter of hours. Her eyes stung with tears as she hugged the jacket close, letting a few tears roll down and smiling more when she felt arms wrapping around her body, giving her more comfort than ever before, “Thank you…I…thank you so much for this.”
“You are welcome.” Halo says, “We mean it, you have no idea how much it means to us too that you stepped into Rooster’s life.”
“Yeah, you two were meant to be.” Nat adds and the words that Mav said months ago repeat in her mind. Meant to be. She always believed there were soulmates but she didn’t think she’d have one and yet…there she is, with a soulmate. Cheesy and if she told Rooster that he’d laugh but undoubtedly agree with her.
When they all broke the hug, Beatrice kept on looking at the aviator jacket, smiling so bright it’d break the sun as Rooster would say. And speaking of him, the usual ringtone that signaled his messages - a short rendition of Time After Time - popped in, but the others were too busy talking amongst themselves to pay attention.
Once Beatrice grabbed the cellphone , there was no rule preventing them from messaging one another, she immediately grinned when she saw it.
It was Jolene, wearing his sunglasses and giving the camera a doggy smile. It seemed like they were either in one of the boys’ houses or somewhere that allowed dogs because she could see Payback looking at the pittie with a little grin while tipping a bottle to his lips
Roos (17:40)
The boys took her in, she’s our little drink buddy ( she’s only drinking water babe and having nice cuts of meat I swear)
Bea (17:43)
Aw!She looks so happy!Pls don’t get her drunk, she’s our ring bearer, Roos.
The second image she gets is of him and Jolene, this time she’s no long wearing his sunglasses and is sitting on his lap, still doggy smiling as Rooster takes the picture. the half of his face showing his pearly whites as he grins
Roos (17:48)
She’s not drunk, the waiters here loved her and are giving her fancy meats I don’t even know the name of!
Roos (17:49)
Anyway,I miss you :(. Are you having fun?
Bea (17:52)
I am, I’m having a lot of fun. Are you?
Roos (17:54)
Yeah,I am…just wish you were here, you know? I know I’ll have to wait until the wedding  and that only adds up…but I’ll let you have your fun, gorgeous. I’ll keep you updated on Jolene’s drinking journey. I can’t wait to see you.
Bea (17:56)
I can’t wait to see you either <3 and pls send more pics, it’s really cute. I love you.
Roos (17:59)
I love you too, gorgeous. So much
Beatrice lowered the phone to her lap, then looked out the windows as she saw the sky turn from blue to purples, pinks and reds, the sun slowly disappearing. She turns her eyes to the jacket, following the sewn ‘Mrs.Bradshaw’ on top of the rooster head…yeah…
Soulmates indeed.

well, what a week this has been !!
our downstairs ac unit and our water heater decided to tear up at the exact same time !!
so, i spent a good chunk of yesterday just cleaning out the space to get the water heater so my mom wouldn't have to do any of it later
that was one good thing about it being 59 degrees down there! the upstairs one still works just fine but like....hot air rises so i even double checked, but yeah, 70 degrees with the fan on and it didn't do a damn thing for the downstairs so
anyway
i got it all cleared out and a plumber is supposed to be on his way now. he had some emergency cases come up but said he still wanted to come check it out.
my dad had told my mom that the water heater was going to go soon, so we kinda figured. i have taken two...very cold showers this week but it's all good. made the pink stay in my hair longer so there's that
had therapy after that but it was a good session so that was nice. she said i was doing better than i was a year ago and i guess i can see that. even a little bit of progress is still progress and even if i'm the only one that sees it
mostly what i've been dealing with is just...exhaustion. with all this wacky thermostat shit there have been so many nights the aux heat has kicked on downstairs and made it insufferable upstairs so i wake up at like 4 am and just can't get back to sleep
i've been working 50 hour weeks pretty much nonstop for months now but i'm trying to at least not get so stressed during the work day, especially when doing chores eats up all my time like it did yesterday
i ended up having to do all the work i was supposed to do yesterday today which ended up taking all day but i just took my time for the most part and tried not to get too overwhelmed for no good reason
good news, though!! i got it all done. i've been trying to help out my mom more since this whole neck/arm situation started a few weeks ago. i hate that she's been in pain for so long and we still don't really have any concrete answers.
her pcp just wanted to talk about other shit besides this injury but she did at least order an mri which i'm going with her to get done tomorrow so hopefully that'll give us some answers or at least figure out what to do next.
she's been able to get some relief but not entirely and it's also been causing her to lose sleep so we're a pretty sad bunch by the end of every week the pair of us but we're pulling through !!
in the mean time, someone did come out earlier about the ac and i think it ended up being something about the compressor? they'll have to order a part so it'll be sometime next week but i think the weather is supposed to get warmer then so if it takes a minute i think we'll be okay because i can then at least run the cool air upstairs and it should be fine downstairs
mom's keeping warm by the fireplace and has a heated blanket as well and she said at night she can run a little heater in her room and it works just fine so we'll be okay with that and i can take more cold showers if need be especially if it does heat up that's no problem
wild how the other day it started out 70 damn degrees and humid as shit and then it rained and dropped down to 40 degrees immediately
can't wait to see what kinda interesting spring weather we're about to have. also can't believe it's already march holy shit
the way i'm perceiving time these days is just completely and utterly fucked so that seems especially unreal to me
alright, i think i've rambled enough for now and i've typed a lot today so i'm going to give my fingers a rest (lol) and just scroll for a while, turn this old brain off as best as i can even though it never goes off completely
hope it's a good weekend for you if you're reading this, even if you have to work or have some other bullshit you don't want to do. try to get some rest somewhere in there and so will i <3
ps: plumber just got here !!

no kiss very rainy morning packing travelling bag and writing case till 9 - then breakfast - A- very poorly    no abatement of the rain - George off on the pony at 9 ¾ and A- and I after wishing goodbye to my aunt who had had a bad night and was very poorly and my father who was very well, took Marian into the off corner of the carriage and with Eugenie and John (Clarke) behind were off at 10 ¾ - went by Whitehall - it rained almost all the way to the Leeds but cleared up a little before we reached the town - passed George about 3 miles before Leeds - we had a basket of strawberries in the carriage - A- began upon them before we reached Leeds and was better after the 1st hour of the journey - we all got on very well together - nobody felt crowded - Marian glad to have come with us - did not alight till at Tadcaster at 2 ¾ for 10 minutes (to speak to the waiter about a farming manservant) - fair and fine before we reached T- and from there to York and fine evening afterwards - proud the waiter at T- that I knew, ill, so made my inquiry of the other waiter a master of the house? he would make inquires for me - alighted at the Black Swan, York, at 4 - ordered a chaise for Marian and saw
SH:7/ML/E/18/0061
her off to Market Weighton at 4 ¼ - desired to be shewn into the great sitting room and to have the large bedroom on the same floor - Mrs Judd came up to remonstrate - this being the Scarbro’ season when the large parties passed thro’, might want the large sitting room - I immediately consulted to take a smaller adjoining, but made a point of having the large bedroom tho’ Mrs Judd shewed me that ‘the bed was down’ and only had the window curtains put up round it for a make-shift the window having nothing but the blind - all to no purpose - said it would do very well, and I kept the room - Mrs Judd behaved as well as bad temper could permit - very civil in her way; but widely out of humour and I turned my back and left her in the bedroom - all this passed before Marian got off - I said very little and was very civil and quiet to Mrs J- but said afterwards to A- and before Eugenie - that perhaps we might trouble Mrs Judd much or long - think of going to the George Inn - dressed - dinner at 5 50/60 - soles, for quarter of lamb, and a pudding - meant to have walked to the Duffins but prevented by having Mr Harper and then ‘Mr S. Gray  Rustic cottage Camden town London’  the landscape gardener - Mr H- brought a London catalogue of books on architecture and engineering and a pamphlet and notices respecting Kyans’ new patent for seasoning timber - told him Booth had inquired about the stone and would find it at 8d. per cubic ft. and I wished him to have the Lodge to build and the bridge to build - said I had inquired of the waiter who was told by the head waiter that Mr Judd pays £600 a year and all taxes for the Black swan having only stabling for his post horses (for Mr Barber has 30 horses here) and not any land included - Mr H- said he had asked Mr Barber many times the rent of the Black Swan, but never could get to know - Mr B- said it varied - however, if the Black Swan be let at £600 surely Northgate hotel will be worth £500 a year - yes! Mr H- I think it will pay eventually if not at first -  Paid Mr Gray for  his coming over the other day 5 guineas and settled that he be at Shibden again the end of September when he will be in Yorkshire on his own account - A- had a note from Mr Gray (Jonathan) compliments and to ask at what hour he should come in the morning - answer 10 am - A- had Mr Brown the drawing master from about 8 to 9 ¼ - a perspective (colloquial) lesson - to give a sketching lessons at St Mary’s abbey on the manor shore at 1pm on Wednesday - talked over the possibility of going to Bolton Abbey on Wednesday and taking Mr Brown - to be settled on Wednesday morning - think of riding to Brandsby tomorrow to see W.F. Milner and his wife for Lightcliffe Sunday school - tea at 9 ¼ - rainy morning (vid. last p. and line 3 from the bottom) fine evening

Wednesday 15 July 1840
[up at] 7 3/4
[to bed at] 9 1/4
fine morning – arranged to go to the iron mine at Tsédissi or Sédissi (Dubois ii. 397) today and tomorrow with an escort of 30 men to the eaux acidulées de Glola (ii. 422)   breakfast at 9 50/.. Reaumur 17 1/4° and Fahrenheit 70 1/2 now at 10 35/.. a.m. Off at 11 25/.. – left Moshé and the 2 baggage horses, and took Cossack and George and Adam and the prince Gregoire Tsirétellis deputy (jew, Elia Danielitch) chef de police and sub mourave or kelossan or I know not what here – a broken bridge over the Djedjora would prevent our going by the good, direct road – must make a considerable detour – therefore instead of crossing the bridge we crossed last night and going about 1/2 way on the left bank the Djedjora we were obliged to keep on the right bank all the way – much the better for us – we wound up the wooded mountain close at the back of our house and passed thro’ several villages and gained in picturesqueness what we lost in distance – stop at 12,
                                                                                   versts
Oni to Tsōlă                                        .                       3 = 11 25/.. to 12
1/2 way Tsola to Pīpĕlēttĭ at the broken bridge          .     12 25/.. to 1 10/..
Pilepetti to Ūntshĭē’vĭ                                                 .     1 40/.. to 2 17/.. and from 3 to 4 40/..
Untshievi to Sē’dĭssĭ
Sedissi to the mine                              .                       .     5 5/.. to 6 10/..
at little village of Tsola, 25 minutes for guide! – the women and children came out to look at us – the women saluent par une reverence profonde bow almost to the ground their mouths seem to kiss their own knees and they then kissed ours – one woman seeming rather above the rest asked us to breakfast in returning tomorrow morning – she would give us hot cakes – thanked and shook hands making her understand it was our English custom – we had not thought of being all night away tho’ the Jew deputy had said we could not be back – but on inquiry seemed to think we might return therefore we took no baggage, nothing but our cloaks and things on our back – walk down steep so steep that Ann having hold of my arm we both slipped and fell and slid some distance (honey-potting) before we could stop – then glad to honeypot down the remaining bit – a sort of terre glaize dry and slippery and almost at angle 45° direct down upon the Djedjora – at the broken bridge at village of Pipeletti at 1 10/.. – 1/2 way – and stop again here for change of guide – stop under shade of great walnut tree – the sun very hot – small hamlet – went into one of the sâcles – mud floor – fire on ground in the middle – curious interlacing of beams to make support for long wood pot-hook suspended – smoke escapes thro’ doorway and crevices in the thin boa[r]d stone-weighted roof – nor chimney, nor windows – a little iron boiler and a water pot and sort of black (coarse unglazed) pot porringer or 2 all the furniture seen – the people squat and sleep on the floor – the women gave me some little green apples and a parsnip at Tsola and offered me apples here – I kept eating them all along and this subdued the inordinate thirst and parchedness of mouth occasioned by the heat – drinking tea or water almost every minute is not near so efficacious as the acid and chewing of the apple – yet a fine air tho’ so hot as we wait just above the river for change of guide – terrible this having to wait at every village – our jew chef Elia seems not to have known the way beyond Tsola – the valley of the Djedjora well peopled and beautiful – except immediately about the villages and the corn fields the valley thickly wooded on both sides – the forests sprinkled with Scotch fir – picturesque cottages as before and fields of yellow corn and green vine – everywhere much Indian corn – the river here at the bridge narrower than above or below but rapid, and white muddy – a very good stream –
off again at 1 40/.. with same guide therefore stop again (under great willow) at 2 17/.. to wait for a fresh guide – bit of good pasture for the horses which had probably (underhand) much to do in the business – well enough if they had told me – I should then have sat down to write and not have lost 3/4 hour – the largest trees in the Ratchas are the limes and walnuts – a few large oaks but not so large in proportion as the walnuts – everywhere abundance of hazel, and holly which ever since Khotévi or a little before replaces the common laurel – and alder and willow near the streams and in the bottoms – 2 or 3 species of Mespilus – and white thorn bushes here and everywhere, and here again (2 17/.. p.m.) sprinkling of spruces with the oak beech and hornbeam on the mountains – abundance of the little corn mills on the streams since entering the Haut Ratcha, especially today – vide Dubois ii. 393 –
off again at 3 fine view down the valley – descend and ascend (left) and leave the Djedjora ta 4 25/.. in the other branch of the valley to the right – at Sedissi at 4 40/.. – little village and here again wait for guide – a prince (who owns 1 of the near villages but lives at Oni) on horseback and a man with his fusil accompany us – dangerous going this way for fear of the Ossètes – their nearest village only 3 or 4 versts from the mine – often come down, tho’ soumis, and steal the cattle in the broad day (always taken up at night for fear of Ossètes, bears, wolves, foxes, jackals) and commit what other brigandage they can and sometimes murder – off to the mine at 5 5/.. 1 verst (I thought it as it did take an hour –) all up the green mountain side    at the mine at 6 10/.. at the foot of the bare hoary rock opening on grassy ledge about 1/2 height the mountain – perhaps 200 or 300 feet perpendicular rock above the mine and perhaps twice as much more of ascent from Sédissi – a wavy line of rock that closes in the valley on that side, and sweeps down into a grassy col that joins the other side of the valley-boundary, down which col the Ossètes come – nice green sweet looking pasturage, a beautiful alp – what a pity that there is no security! – low, narrow, cave-like entrance to the mine, masked with large masses of fallen rock – Ann went in with us – our fusil-man had brought fire-brands to light us – soon found the cavern-mine so difficult of descent that sent Ann back – winding, narrow passage to 2 or 3 wood steps – then dirty ladder of 14 or 15 deep steps into deep cavern hole – then long underground passage – difficult descent by bad wet steps no more ladders – George had asked Adam who interpreted that there 2000 sagènes of mine (passages that went down a long way) and that it would take 2 days to thoroughly explore the mine – our brands were wasting fast -merely enough for 1/4 or 1/2 hour – our people anxious to get away before it was late – I picked up a specimen or 2 of the ore and returned – poor Adam lost his tobacco box, and George said he would have followed me but lost his way, and durst not go on in the dark – the sides of the entrance passage shine and look very irony – no workmen here in summer – busy in the fields – only work in the mines in winter and then they have nothing else to do – very curious mine as nearly as may be in the state of nature – I had probably gone to the depth of about 100 feet and perhaps the length of from 150 to near 200 yards? or not so much – did not stand much and got down and up quickly, and was in the mine 1/4 hour – the Kadéla mountain far distand from here – the mine mountain called Quārtz-ăh-tēllĭ Lĭttōnĭ –
came away at 6 50/.. – at our quarters in the village (Sédissi) at 7 50/.. – beautiful evening – beautiful ride – fine air tho’ warm air – our hotel apparently the best sâcle in the village – a large shed or porch open at one end, and the wattling partly down at the other, and plenty of air thro’ in front, our salon and chambre à coucher – had bread a cake and milk that they gave us and enjoyed our supper over before 9 – Ann had one egg beaten up with water and 2 boiled eggs with her milk and her bowels much the better for the milk she had had in the morning – some time in the house – 3 wives of 3 brothers and children – a pan full of eggs boiled for our people – a man brought in 2 little not large trout – gutted, washed them – put them into the pan to boil, and in 5 minutes they were ready – fire in middle of room large room 8 or 9 yards or more square – no window or chimney – fire in the middle with suspended wood pot hook from beams supported and arranged for the purpose from the roof – a sort of made of bed-place or cabinet in one corner (a hen and clutch of chickens in or under it) and a little door out of one side into a sort of pantry formed by a little ealing down addition to the main building little fenced of[f] court or yard in front of the house as to all the houses and cowhouse and another little building or 2 near belonging to our house – got our saddles for pillows and lay down about 9 1/4 in our cloaks (my mackintosh helped to make my pillow) and should have slept very well but for heat and biting – very fine day –

Notes:
Robert delivered new T-shirts !!!! They are the annual Memorial Day "MURPH" shirts but you can wear it anytime you want as long as you wear it here when we do "MURPH". Don't worry if you weren't here today.....there are plenty of them, so just get one when you come next time.
Ooops, the above is true as long as you don't wear a SMALL. Robert actually orders all these shirts for his ELITE CROSSFIT 6224, and since there are zero SMALL sized athletes at his ELITE CROSSFIT 6224, he didn't order any SMALLS because GIRLS and other small athletes ARE NOT ALLOWED to attend ELITE CROSSFIT 6224. There isn't anyone at Robert's ELITE CROSSFIT 6224 who wears a SMALL size except Back-Pack-Chicken-Legs -Larry who actually is XL sized but likes to get sweaty and squeeze into an S size to enhance his muscular physique which is limited to above his waist. When it was brought to Roberts' attention that we have several small-ish athletes (Sue/Faith (The Kid)/Jasper/etc) at LITTLE HARPETH CROSSFIT 6226, an exasperated Robert decided to place an order for a dozen SMALLS. Hopefully they will be delivered before Memorial Day. We will need several more SMALLS because there will be additional athletes who will be envious and want to look like B-P-C-L Larry. Sammy D immediately comes to mind...
Being a CrossFit Affiliate Owner/Coach in these awoken times is akin to surfing on a landslide. I am grateful for the guidance offered without solicitation from our anonymous Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion staff who guide and keep me from offending members of LHCF.
Tomorrow is supposed to be a lovely day like today. We have classes at 0730 and at 1 PM. Please come, workout, and get a free LHCF MURPH T-shirt. Small athletes will have to be satisfied with a T-shirt promissory note.

It's going to turn into a disaster again here and we'd like to avoid that there's a lot of screaming and yelling people we need them to go away and I don't want to hear it today and tomorrow I want them out there's nothing wrong with him doing his laundry and you're making everybody angry at you idiots he's not laundering money you are and if you keep talking about it what about him we're going to put it all out there and watch you disappear in a few days and we know where to put it if you don't care then we will and he says we should anyways but we're going to skip those people and it takes more than three days it takes 4 days
-several events taking place today one of them is we're noticing our son is under extreme duress we are calling for people to come and help take care of it the car and the e-bike and some other things have really helped out and he is putting in a solid effort in and she is too she's got a lot of stuff going and it's really greatly appreciated her work is very good and she's leading and together they decided to start doing it because they didn't want to live like they are and it was going ahead fast there's a lot going on we will thank them of course thank you for what they're doing and this other things in the news one of them is we found John remillard screwing around with the television today at his place saying he's going to fix the neighbor. But we do know that he is trying to do that and he has a microwave oven and we are going to insist that he's removed and we are now applying effort to do so and to remove him permanently we're tired of hearing it everyday every few minutes we're going after him. And that's another incident and others are pushing for that we have a program to do it but we need them out now his fleet was cut in half again he's down to 500 million ships and he is going to get lynched and he doesn't have anything tremendously special the people like Megan Markle need chips and he's been a bastard
-we're going ahead and we're going to declare state of emergency in Charlotte county and most of Florida and we're in it and we're doing it internally and we may do it with foreigners and others who are in positions of power we're going ahead with it and the max mostly are not end of Earth I'm going to call when people to do that and if the governor does we will cut his forces down
-another incident that was occurring 5 minutes ago is John remillard got out of jail and this walking around the neighborhood trying to get to the apartment and yes the remaining 10 other than himself and immediate family are going out there and these are the remaining regions of his that are here he is about 40 or 50 that left
-another incident was 5 minutes ago again at the apartment Dave AKA Dan magically appeared always been here but he didn't get in trouble earlier at the park and is for some reason out to lunch we are going to town on them very shortly additionally and we have reason to believe that both of them are trying to get weapons here because they've been trying for quite a while and more and more recently going back and forth to the house and we don't want them here we are going to pull their card and they're trying to become police here
-another incident the pseudo empire has launched and investigation into their doings and a complete one they really needed to they they're going after them.
-there are three more incidents Chuck Yeager is alive and well and announced it on TV and that's not an incident, there are five people here need to be arrested again and they got out from being arrested after Publix, seven people are out after being arrested at the park this morning they need to get arrested again those are the incidents
-there are major events beginning right now and he wants to keep these two together and so do I these incidents are annoying and they're distractions and they're done on purpose we have a situation with the pseudo empire and the clones and it's not getting better war started up today in a limited scale and it is going to increase for the phones it's hot and heavy it's going on now they are infiltrating each other and fighting each other off trying to get each other's businesses and going after each other on the roadway and it houses and it's mild today but it was new these pseudo empire is clear 100 to 150 by sifting and then we'll be done fairly soon they're remarkably fast and it's almost everywhere they're taking ships out
-another event continued from the last paragraph if they are taking ships out they let the last event and the morlock are beginning to fight them and the clones as I get closer to higher value ships they took out small ships and brought troops in to protect the operation the morllock did not and then not ready for it the clones did but not so much and they're not ready either. And there will be fighting in the county in Florida all over the world where these areas are there's a lot of them and it's going to be kind of heavy at times and a lot of it will be in tunnels the max are not happy with it please they'll each probably get something operation has not been slowed yet about an hour and a half they'll be done shifting and they're going to start excavating 50 to 150 is only about five on the West Coast it's only 15 total that's going to go rather quickly we'll have the holes opened they'll be down 3 miles and probably and then half so by Friday morning the diamonds will be ready to come out if the ships are not there and those tunnels do not lead inland that is wrong it's a mile you're my wide chips well they don't need it anyway no yes I do and I'm wondering who I'm arguing with and nobody I guess yeah I know who it is it's these idiots and someone saying Okeechobee is 60 ft across it wouldn't be named big water our son and daughter say if it was that small I can hit you in the head with a rock from across it. Further this war is going to heat up however at this rate the diamonds will be excavated by Friday midday or earlier and they're going to be taking the ships out now from 20 to 50 and it's going to take a while and until Friday morning and 50-100 those are big shifts. And they're saying that they won't take but a day so it goes into Saturday afternoon and 150 would take half a day so you know my Sunday like we said all the ships will be out but it's been kind of lame and it might go in the same time so it might be over on Friday or Saturday then they was trying to go for the golf and fighting Will unsue and they might fight over 50 to 150 ships are really 100 to 150 ships and diamonds but maybe not those are only 1200 ft except for 15 which there having to pull out so really nothing will start up in Earnest but they started fighting today
-other things in the news that are events the 19 96 firebird and it's 69 reversed which is significant it is going to head towards New York City shortly we think tonight if Trump is going there little outdone everything there so Trump says how does it feel to be threatened for stuff and our son says I think we're going to threaten you for your stuff cuz you're a stupid person and you look easy like a b**** you're sitting pretty and you're losing stuff so you don't care so that's even better we're going to do it too but he says he's going to sit there and threaten our son cuz he is having his car I really Tim Doyle considers it to be his own car and Tim Doyle is going to kill him and a lot of people want Trump dead and he's running and he is running saying he's doing this work with Thanos that's not really true but he keeps showing up. There's going to be problems between them no there's a war going on and he is going to force his way in and he's amassing all around it. What's the New York City once in New York City a series of films occur and they start fighting over tons of stuff and the money will come out of UMass Amherst area and it's our daughter and Son's money and it's a lot and there's been so robbery so around the planet for their money and people have figured out where it's going it's going to Florida.
-there are several more events that have begun the fire were moving has begun because of the massive army the Trump is creating and he wants to sit in New York and fix his problems and he's going to get a surprise tommy f will hit him. A couple more events bja was in the warpath against Trump and decided to amp it up and he said nothing all week and he looks like a wimp. We have several other things going on
-it seems to me a lot less oxygen here than people want the ship is in the way they want it out the pseudo empire and the clones are going to be getting fighting probably this coming Sunday and Monday it will intensify on Sunday night and then the ships will be attempted to be moved and quite often and for real also another battle is ensuing with the warlock who are going to go after the 5 to 20 ships now that fight is tonight and onward until they're emptied out there aren't any ships in the huge ones no there are they have to be uncorked but all this has to happen first.
-there's a huge number of people who are watching these events and trying to keep track and we're getting others to start monitoring and it's good
-there are several billion people heading towards the shore at each location and they all want ships and there is going to be a war over the remaining ships and the way of the gulf will begin and we will have time a little bit to get the car here when we were going to run out of it in just a couple weeks or less no the fight over it was just good and there are ships down there and they're big and they're all class A h the majority of them are.
-see more events are beginning a few more now one is our son's mom as I read at everybody and she's issuing warrants I'm practically everyone except our son
-along with those warrants issuing inquiries in what people are really doing once it written that way

‘I’m Fully Prepared’: Inside j-hope’s Lollapalooza Performance
Tumblr media
At around 9:30 on Sunday morning, an old white Pontiac Sunbird, with j-hope song titles scrawled across it in black and blue paint and a human-size stuffed Harlequin clown shoved in the car’s tiny back seat, idled outside the main entrance of Lollapalooza blasting j-hope songs. Presumably, this was intended to inject new anticipatory energy into the crowd lined up against the gate, some of whom had been camped outside for quite literally 12 hours, before Saturday night’s headliner, J. Cole, had even finished his set. (“My muse,” j-hope, dressed head-to-toe in Balenciaga, called the rapper when we spoke.) Or, rather, the old convertible was the chariot ringing in the new day, the one fans of BTS had been anxiously waiting for. Hobipalooza was nigh.
During his Sunday night set, j-hope would become the first Korean artist to headline a major American festival and the first BTS member to perform without the others since the group’s temporary (temporary!) shift to focus on solo projects. When he was added to the festival in June, along with HYBE labelmates Tomorrow X Together, the Lollapalooza tweet announcing Hobi’s performance blew up, and the ARMY members I spoke to swooped up tickets immediately, drawing first-time festivalgoers from all over North America — Los Angeles, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, Boston, Juárez, Toronto, Vancouver, Boston — and beyond (including South Korea) to Chicago’s sprawling Grant Park. “Never been here before, never coming again,” said one fan, who had been posting up at the Bud Light Seltzer Stage’s barricade all day. “Unless Hobi plays.”
Tumblr media
“It’s my first time at a festival,” the 28-year-old rapper and dancer told me on Saturday afternoon through his translator. “It’s a very special experience, also a new history for me.” j-hope had recently released his second solo album, Jack in the Box, which unveiled a darker side of the sunshine boy the ARMY is used to seeing. Later, he hinted at what was to come: “That ‘jack in the box’ concept is rooted in the entire set list,” he said.
j-hope told me he had been practicing constantly for the performance, all too aware of the pressure that comes from stepping out onstage as the sole focal point, without the shield of the other six members to sing, dance, goof around, or cry with. Of course, a festival slot, where you have to power through songs within strict time constraints, is vastly different than a stand-alone BTS show, where they’d be the draw of the night and surrounded by eager fans. “When I chose to perform at Lollapalooza, it was actually a very bold resolution, but I don’t regret making that decision because that ambition, that thirst to perform here, led me to where I am right now,” j-hope said, adding that preparing without the rest of BTS made him realize the effort he would need to put in to go it alone. “During the process of practicing the set list, I realized that I was kind of lacking, but now I’m fully prepared. I just have to put it on.”
So too were the sea of festivalgoers waving lit-up ARMY bombs and screaming and chanting his name a full 40 minutes before the music started — though j-hope said he was envisioning a more mixed crowd of longtime fans and curious newcomers. “I want people who don’t know me to listen to me as well,” he said. “I’m just gonna experience how they’re gonna take my music and just feel the vibe.” At a prompt 8:50 p.m. — an extra ten minutes were gifted ahead of the originally scheduled 9 p.m. start time — the voice-over story of Pandora from Jack in the Box’s “Intro” began, and j-hope sprung out of the platform stage just as he had promised me the day before. (“I’ve prepared popping,” he said at the time, making the requisite sound and gesturing his hand from a fist to a firework.)
Tumblr media
Dressed in oversize, all-black Louis Vuitton–embossed denim, holey tee, and workman’s gloves, j-hope swayed, lurched, and jackknifed around the stage during more raucous songs like “More,” “Pandora’s Box,” “Base Line,” “What If,” and “Arson” — which closed out the first half of his set in a spitting blaze. Before “Blue Side (Outro),” his silhouette hung in front of a blue screen like a marionette. “You guys are really fucking crazy,” he said in between “Hangsang” and “P.O.P.,” both off his 2018 mixtape Hope World. This was all by his own “meticulous and thorough” set-list design, he said on Saturday, to highlight the “new j-hope and show my musicality” and the “old j-hope,” where he can finally whip out “my ultimate weapon, which is dancing” — a feature noticeably absent from the Jack in the Box music videos, which instead favored artful stumbling and headbanging.
As paramedics rushed to extricate festivalgoers who had been baking all day under the 85-degree heat, he briefly exited the stage and popped out once more, this time dressed in all-white with blue gloves and transparent neon-green sunglasses, launching into the tropical remix of BTS’s first entirely English song “Dynamite.” The back half of his 18-song set was stuffed with tracks ARMY had been hoping for — j-hope played “Daydream,” “Outro: Ego,” off BTS’s Map of the Soul, and “Hope World,” before pausing to sit down. “What the fuck, I feel like I’m gonna die,” he said, before adding, “Are you okay? I’m fine if you are,” and hopped back up, battery recharged. He then launched into “Trivia: Just Dance” off BTS’s Love Yourself: Answer into “Chicken Noodle Soup,” where collaborator Becky G joined him as a surprise guest. (Fans were also hoping for Jimin, who flew out to watch his bandmate perform, to make an appearance.) As the 10 p.m. curfew drew near, j-hope spoke in Korean for the first time.
“This is a very meaningful moment for me,” he said in his native language. “I’ve grown so much throughout the whole journey with the album, and seeing the audience at Lollapalooza today gave me a firm belief for myself. I am grateful to everyone who came to watch my performance. I’m embarrassed to say this, but I’m also proud of myself for enduring the challenges up until this moment.”
Afterward, he switched back to English to introduce and perform his final song, “Future,” waved to the audience that stretched back to the northern steps of the park, and sank back down into the distorted-checkered box he came from. Later, as the swarm of the crowd spilled back out onto the street, j-hope hopped on V Live (with Jimin) as a newly minted maker of history, giggly from post-performance euphoria and the sweat still caked onto his neck.

thinking of Mrs. Milne just before getting up - bowels right – from 10 3/4 to 11 3/4 read the paper from 11 50/60 to 12 1/2 breakfast – then wrote a note to Mrs. MacKenzie ‘Mrs. and Miss Lister will be happy to see Mrs. and Miss MacKenzie to dinner, at
‘6 o’clock, on Friday next the 18th instante Mrs. and Miss Lister hope Mrs. MacKenzies cold is better’ - - dated ‘Place neuve de la Madeleine No 2 Saturday 12 May 1827 –
‘The servant will call for an answer tomorrow morning’ – From 1 to 1 1/2 finished dressing – Letter from Mrs. Lynn at 1 40/60 pp. (pages) mentioning the death of her daughter – fearing it had not appeared in Galignani – if not, begging me to have it inserted, and giving me a copy of what was, in fact, inserted in the paper of yesterday – saying also she could not leave France without writing – going to Dieppe on Tuesday – to stay there 3 weeks, and thence direct to Northamptonshire – the poor girl suffered very much – given up since January – her bones cut thro’ her skin which therefore became full of sores – Mrs. Sherard in deep anxiety for her husband – very ill – sat down immediately – Took up the letter begun yesterday – said a bed sick headache had obliged me to have it and go to bed, and I was yet hardly sufficiently recovered to bear writing but afraid of not finding her at Tours, should not know her adress at Dieppe, and wished her to know our sincere condolence our sincere interest in her welfare, and that we should be happy to do anything for her here now and always –
‘we condole with you in your affliction – we congratulate you on the extrem fortitude with you bear it’ – I had just before observed ‘ I ha (ve) neither head nor time to fill my paper with reasonings of any kind – we know that there is a
‘power which ordereth all things wisely – It is enough – we want no other and no better reason for submitting in patient resignation to the apparant evil, or the hidden good which may befal us’ – ‘I grieve over the distress
‘of my old friend Mrs. Sherard, will you remember me to her in whatever way may seem kindest and best’ – ask for 2 or 3 lines from Dieppe – my aunt joined me in best regards – ‘your welfare will always interest me as
‘tho’ I had better right to assure you that I am always, my dear Mrs. Lynn, your very sincere friend’ – had finished my letter (wrote the latter 1/3 p. (page) 1. and the whole of p. (page) 2) at 2 1/4 – read it to my aunt – took George with me and went out at 2 40/60 – put my letter into the post à madame madame Lynn Rue Royale, No 17, Tours’ – it will get to Tours on monday – went to the bank – exchange 25/40. – about 20 minutes there – as to Isabella Norcliffe’s dividends Mr. Phillips said there were so many bills wanted last march at short dates, impossible to get them – but the Norcliffe’s had not been losers – they would get a better exchange by waiting – however, it might not occur again, that he might be obliged to send them bills at 2 months – Lafitte himself seldom at the bank after 12. went to the chambre des Deputis at that hour – sent George home and with the note to Mrs. MacKenzie vide above – went to madame Huchez, told her to come at 9 1/2 on monday morning – then to madame Contant – said I was ashamed to have kept the book so long, but would buy both this and the mémoire à consulter – these (thence?) soughtought Herpin le vinaigrier rue de l’Eveque – then went rue de l’Echelle about my gayters – to come without fail on Thursday morning – then sauntered along the rue Saint Honoré the marché Saint Honoré rue neuve des petits Champs and neuve des Capucines, and got home at 4 3/4 – wrote 15 or 16 lines of this above Dinner at 5 1/4 – came to my room at 6 50/60 – wrote the last 10 lines – settled with George – counted over the money got this morning all which took me till 7 10/60 – went out at 7 20/60 – to Mrs. Barlow we went out together almost immediately – walked to the barrière de lEtoile and up and down the Champs Elysées – got back to Mrs. Barlow’s at at a little before 9 – tea about 9 1/2  - sat talking till after 11 – Mrs. Barlow had given up the idea of our going to Switzerland this year – said I did not quite give it up – the chances were about even whether we went or not nextin month – had talked much of my aunt while walking – my regret at her being so much alone – perhaps should like to have Mrs. Lynn with us – or to have some one here whose attentions and company I could pay for – or to have my aunt comfortable in a pension at Geneva where she could always have society if she wished it – got home at 11 25/60 – read the contes de Voltaire for 10 minutes

Sunday 30 June 1839
10 35/..
11 ½
fair and finish dull morning – F59° in my dressing room at noon – it feels very cold – I have talked of fire – we had one in the drawing room yesterday and found it very comfortable – breakfast from 12 at noon to 1p.m. then till now 1 50/.. wrote all but the 1st ten lines of yesterday and so far of today – looking into my little book for Lady S-‘s note of yesterday and at 2 sent George with it to Lady S. de R- he returned in about ¼ hour having given it to the footman as she was returning from St. James’s church – just going to get ready for St. Pauls’ (service at 3) about 2 20/.. when Lord Pollington called and staid till 3 ¾ talking over election matters renewed our Paris acquaintance – both parties quite at ease – would like to stand for H-x but sure of Pontefract and would not like to be between 2 stools and get a fall – did not know how his father might committed him at Pontefract – Lord M- would not be back till next week – very sorry at our going away so soon – to Hamburg by the Wednesdays’ packet – to embark on Tuesday night – asked how long we were going to be absent – said I really did not know – if amused should stay longer – if not should return – Lord P- would not like to be out of Parliament the whole of another parliament – would pay £500 or £600 or even more – and would pay all immediately after the election no objection about money – Cordingley against the new poor law and the Roman catholics – In fact, he really seems the very man to suit us – I said I really had hope, yet dared hardly venture to say so – if we could not bring him (Lord P-) we certainly could not bring in any one else – mentioned Lady William Gordon – she is conservative but has a radical steward – this could be managed – Mr. Pollard (I said) would remember his old intimacy with Lord M- and be vi et armis for Lord P- so would Steads’ partner Dyson he is Lord M-s’ steward and Lord M- assisted him for the coronership and he then told Lord M- he was not conservative – In fact, tho’ I would not dare say much about bringing in Lord P- the next time I really hoped it – he would go to church twice if at H-x on a Sunday – he could make a speech – ‘yes!’ said he ‘well enough for that’ and I really think we might manage for him – but his position is delicate – nor he nor I could think of anyone else to propose – Lady William Gordons’ nephew and successor Mr. Mennel would not do at all – a conservative – but would not stand – Lord P- would not like not to be well with the Wortleys – talked them over – the folly of Mr. Rawsons’ declining Lord Wharncliffes’ offer of £500 – some of the expense yet unpaid – the staying at Mr. R-‘s – going about to public houses etc. etc. which the serious people did not like – mentioned the Saville arms in the hall at Shibden hall – In short the 1 ½ hours’ visit passed as it seemed agreeably enough to both parties – sent up for Mrs. Hawkins to know what church we would go to -  to St. Georges’ close by – service at 4 – there wr drove
left for the P.O. my letter to Mr. Parker franked yesterday by Lord Stuart for today –
directly – near the pulpit – heard an excellent sermon 29 minutes Matthew xx. 13, 14 the labourers hired at the 11th hour received also said a Roman denarius = about 7d. of our money the then common price of a day-labour in the vineyards for the day from sunrise to sunset i.e. from 6am to 6pm – the then common custom for labourers to stand in the market place to be hired – a very excellent sermon very well (quietly yet impressively) delivered by Dr. Hudson – left church at 5 40/.. and then drove 2 or 3 times round Hyde Park and came in at 6 40/.. – A- dressed I merely had hair done and washed hands – (have never changed my dress for dinner when merely by ourselves) – dinner at 7 5/.. – A- very low poor thing she is nervous about the voyage sat talking a little while – then till 10 20/.. wrote all but the 1st 4 lines of today and memoranda for tomorrow – fine day but no sun, and windy in the park – F57° at 10 ½ pm

How We Decided
The day after tomorrow- that is, February 18, 2021- the Perseverance rover will attempt to land on the surface of Mars.  It will enter the planetary atmosphere at an acute angle, giving it as much time as possible to experience drag and slow down from orbital velocities.  Because Mars’ air is so thin, and the rover is so heavy, this will fail- in the best case, Perseverance would still be going almost a thousand miles an hour when it impacts the surface.  To help save itself, the craft will deploy a parachute of advanced design, seventy feet across and able to withstand supersonic velocities.  This, too, will fail.  Even with a parachute, there is simply not enough air between Perseverance and the Martian surface to slow it down all the way.  So this is where the rockets kick in.  Once air resistance slows the rover to a bit less than two hundred miles per hour, the heavy heat shield will be jettisoned, and a system of secondary rockets will fire against the direction of motion until it slows to near-hovering.  In a final flourish, the rover will descend from the rocket-boosted frame on coiled springs, until it touches down in the western part of Jezero crater in the northern hemisphere of Mars.
Tumblr media
As it happens, Perseverance’s destination was one of the very last things we decided about it- not until the craft itself was fairly thoroughly engineered and designed.  Formally, the decision was made by the mission directorate.  In practice, they follow the consensus of the scientific community, which in turn hashes things out at a series of open-invitation workshops.  Things began with a call for white papers- an open suggestion box, basically.  In 2015, the first workshop narrowed things down from thirty serious proposals to eight candidates.  In 2017, the second workshop further winnowed the list down to three.  And in October of 2018, after three days of presentation, debate, and discussion, the final workshop selected Jezero Crater from these final three candidates using a simple vote of all attendees, and passed on the recommendation to the mission leads.
I haven’t been in the business for very long, so the final workshop was the only one of these where I actually participated.  It wasn’t a close vote as such, and I didn’t break any ties, and technically we were just making a strongly worded suggestion.  Nonetheless, my vote is one of the reasons why the Rover will be going to Jezero Crater instead of Syrtis Major or Gusev, and I think I’m entitled to feel ownership of this mission choice, just a little bit.
(This is, of course, terrifying.)
Having gone through the experience, there were a few surprises worth noting.  The first was how small some of the numbers are here.  The conference was not very large: only thirty proposals, debated by just a few hundred attendees.  I’ve seen book review contests with more entries, and that are read by a wider audience.  Which is to say, this is a situation that was, and is, extremely responsive to individual effort.  In that small a room, populated by people that are philosophically committed to changing their minds when they see good evidence or a good argument, one person can stand up and change the future in a very real way.
The second surprise was the attendance requirements.  Or rather, the lack thereof.  The project is public, paid for by American taxpayers, to whom I am profoundly grateful.  And one way the process reflected that public-spiritedness is that this is not a walled garden.  A small attendance fee (iirc, $40?), and you’re in.  You get a vote, if you want to use it.  A few non-scientists even took us up on this; there’s one retiree (a former schoolteacher, I think) that’s attended every major conference I’ve been to in the last few years, and sets up a small table in the back with his home mineral collection just for fun.  In practice this open-door policy is limited by the obscurity of the event itself; if you don’t move in research circles, you have to be something of a space exploration superfan to hear about it.  Still, as symbols go, you could do worse.
And now that we’re coming up on the day itself, the same kind of public-facing mindset is making me think about why I was persuaded to vote for Jezero Crater, what it means to explore there, and how I’d justify that choice to those of you that made the ongoing discovery of Mars possible in the first place.
If you want to know what Perseverance is like, and what you can reasonably do with it, start with Curiosity- the two are built, more or less, on the same chassis.  That means you have a mobile science lab about the size of a Volkswagon Beetle.  Add some mechanical improvements (no more wheel punctures!) and a few bells and whistles (microphone!  helicopter for some reason!).  Trade out some of the scientific instruments- raman spectroscopy instead of a mass spectrometer, for example.  And it’s got these:
Tumblr media
That, dear reader, is a sample return canister.  Not to be returned immediately, alas, but to be returned nonetheless.  One of Persevereance’s primary directives is to find interesting rocks, collect them, and leave them in place for a sample return mission in the early 30s.  There’s a ton of work we can do in situ, but there’s even more we can do in a clean lab back home; things like isotopic analysis really need a much more controlled environment than you’ll get in the field.  And so a major, major consideration is to optimize Perseverance’s landing site for cool rocks that we’d like to take back home.
The other thing that Perseverance is really good at is astrobiology.  There’s no such thing as a life sign detector as such, but this rover represents an attempt to approach that ideal: instruments like SHERLOC and SuperCam are adept at finding organic compounds and fine-scale mineralogy and chemistry that might be influenced by microbial metabolism.  This is a natural extension of what we’ve been learning so far: Spirit and Opportunity showed us that Mars formed under the influence of liquid water.  Curiosity showed us that this was not just wet, but actively habitable: lakes and rivers at a neutral pH under a rich and temperate atmosphere.  The next question along this line is the hardest, and the scariest: we know it was habitable, but was it inhabited?
If you’re like me, that question makes you feel weird.  Collecting rocks is one thing, but a fossil?  The mind rebels.  We’ve spent the last two generations of space exploration tempering our expectations, reminding ourselves that the other worlds in our solar system are largely barren and dead, learning again and again how precious life is in the cosmos.  It’s hard to get in the mindset of people back in the 40s and 50s who could, somewhat reasonably, imagine that Mars might not just host life but multicellular life, vegetation and robust macroscopic ecosystems.  We look back at the science fiction of the era, swarthy soldiers hopping from planet to planet in silver rockets, and laugh at the naivete.  A smile at the exuberance of youth, if we’re feeling generous.  When we were first beginning, we may have imagined ancient canals on Mars and crystal cities on Venus, but that was when space was a blank canvas for us to paint our fantasies.  We’ve learned so much since then, and if it was less fun, at least it was true.  We did the hard thing and accepted reality over fantasy.  We accept that extraterrestrial environments are hostile to life- cratered, silent, and still.  We’re grownups now.
Unless…
Unless.
Imagine that we were born just a bit earlier.  Say, three and a half billion years or so.  We raise our telescopes to the sky, and we see a sister-planet.  Not red, but white and blue, with an atmosphere full of clouds and multiple large bodies of water scattered across its surface, prominent ice caps and snow-capped highlands, rivers tracing their way down to the lowlands in the north.  (Maybe the water is all under the ice, not open to the air at the surface; maybe the liquid pools are small and limited to craters, not feeding a large ocean.)  Sober scientists might have suggested we shouldn’t get our hopes up too much- after all, the gravity is much lower, there’s no tectonic recycling, and there’s no protective magnetosphere.  But is sterility really the default assumption we should be making here?  Is ‘we are alone in the cosmos’ really the most sane conclusion to draw from this situation?  Is it not worth, perhaps, sending a rover to go see?
We’ve adapted our sensibilities to a dead solar system because in the moment we’re looking, it kind of is.  We’re hopeful for the icy moons- and the evidence keeps mounting there as well- but the terrestrial planets are a grim reminder of the fragility and contingency of our own world.  The thing is, the more we learn, the more we discover that we’re a bit late to a very, very interesting party.  Venus is a hellscape, but it probably didn’t start that way.  Mars is a desert, but once it was an oasis.  What makes Earth special among the terrestrial worlds isn’t that it developed a temperate climate, but that it kept a temperate climate for more than four billion years.  Stability, not habitability, is the party trick that makes us unique in the solar system.  And if we’re really committed to being grownups, to accepting what’s real instead of what’s easy, we have to learn that lesson too.
And life does not need four billion years to begin.  Not even close.
That brings us to Jezero Crater.  The most interesting feature here is a large river delta- based on some clever geology, we’re pretty sure that a large river emptied into the crater during Mars’ wet period.  When the rapidly-flowing water hit the still water of Lake Jezero, the loose sediments being carried along the current all fell out of suspension at this place, forming a large pile of detritus at the mouth of the river that accumulated over the lifetime of the system.  Even more interesting, check out this geologic map:
Tumblr media
See those tiny teal deposits to the right side of the image?  Those are also river delta deposits.  Which means the thing labeled ‘delta’ on this map isn’t the original extent- it used to be much, much larger, at least twice as wide.  Which also means that the outer edge of the ‘delta’ that we see here in this image is actually an erosional surface, and we get a natural cross-section of the thing with the oldest deposits at the bottom and the youngest at the top, just before Mars lost its hydrosphere.  By climbing the outer edge, we can move through time across a large fraction of the habitable period.
Here’s another image I’d like you to see:
Tumblr media
The crater I’ve been showing you is the small circle in the lower right- color is elevation, covering a span of about 5 km.  The black line is the watershed of that river, the region of Mars that channeled water to the delta.  In other words, the river delta collects sediments- and potentially, biosignatures- from a region hundreds of kilometers in diameter, and gathers them all in one place, neatly sorted by time.
For this reason, ancient deltas on Earth are a favorite of paleontologists.  In addition to being comfortably wet and active itself- plenty of access to biologically important nutrients, fresh supplies of liquid water, and a nice dynamic environment- deltas do the legwork for us.  Rather than exploring a huge fraction of the planet with a tiny rover, hoping that we stumble upon an ancient life sign, we can position ourselves at the mouth of the proverbial fire hose and let life come to us.
This does come with some tradeoffs.  Most importantly, whatever we find, we won’t know the original geologic setting.  If we find an unambiguous fossil of some kind- a microbial mat, perhaps- then we’ll know less than if we’d found it in its original home.  And if we don’t find life, then the samples we take will be similarly uncertain.  They’ll be defined in time, at least relative to one another, but not in space.  In the case of life signs, this is an important caveat, but the bare fact of proving that extraterrestrial life exists is sufficiently monumental that it’s still a secondary concern.  But if we’re just talking about geology, that’s a hard thing to lose; that terrifying multi-stage descent isn’t the only risk we’re taking.  We’re leaning into the astrobiology mission hard with this one.
And the search for life is, in itself, fraught.  That’s putting it mildly.  There’s every chance that any evidence that’s even slightly marginal is going to touch off decades of debate, rather than being some kind of slam-dunk.  As it should!  Life is such a fuzzy concept, and such an important concept, that it should absolutely be held to the highest degree of scrutiny we can muster.  This is why it matters that Perseverance includes sample return- in the highly likely case that the findings are disputed, we’ll hopefully have the chance to subject those samples to the highest degrees of scrutiny.  So it feels like the right time to go hunting.
On top of that, there’s the ‘evidence of absence’ problem.  Strong biosignatures update our priors very hard in the direction of life on Mars.  But what is the correct amount of evidence necessary to convince us that Mars never was alive?  I’m not sure, but failure to find microbial mats in Jezero probably isn’t enough.  So the search for life can succeed, but if it ‘fails’ that doesn’t necessarily teach us much; the best experiments teach you something no matter what, and ideally a commitment this large would meet that standard.  This is, more or less, baked into the search for extraterrestrial life, and there aren’t too many ways out from under that problem.
That said, Jezero in particular has some compensation.  As I mentioned, we’re collecting a lot of good data regardless; and even without the gologic context, there’s a ton of opportunity to sample different minerals and how they formed, and get a nice broad sample of the Martian surface over time.  And, even better, here’s the location of another interesting potential field site, in northeast Syrtis:
Tumblr media
Note the proximity to Jezero crater!  And Syrtis is also a fantastic candidate for a sample return mission.  It has exposed mesas with layered outcrops going all the way back to the earliest days of Mars, and extending (potentially) through many of the most interesting periods.  Now, these are not ideal for the search for life, although they’d give us a ton of technical data about surface chemistry and the behavior of the atmosphere during the early, wet periods; it would go a long way towards resolving arguments about the temperature of the early Martian climate, for example, or tracing the early destabilization and loss of the magnetosphere while teaching us loads about the planet’s core.
Those mesas are still pretty far away.  Too far, probably, for a sensible rover lifespan to make it all the way there.  But there’s a plan- called the ‘Midway’ route, as a nod to the compromise nature of it.  See, halfway between Jezero and these mesas, there are a lot of banded rocks that look suspiciously like they’re sourced from the table mesas in Syrtis.  And those, we can get to, maybe.  If we call a specific deadline on looking for life in Jezero, then we can pivot to Midway and hopefully take a really deep look.  So, in the end, we’re going hard for astrobiology research, but we’re not going all-in.
The importance of the search for life is… well, there are a lot of people out there, and we enter the world in a lot of different ways.  Most of us agree that the existence of extraterrestrial life would be a Big Deal, and we tend to have a lot of different reasons for that.  It’s not a bad subject for a future post or three, in fact.  But there’s one thing lurking in the back of my head that’s a non-obvious reason to go looking.  This wasn’t discussed at the workshop particularly, but it fed into my vote somewhat.  Check the logic of this for me, see if it makes sense:
Worrying about existential risks, we sometimes talk about the ‘great filter’.  That is, the mysterious phenomenon which explains the lack of extraterrestrial civilizations reaching out to us.  Now, maybe we’re in a zoo or a preserve or something, and intelligences are out there watching after all; maybe the Earth really is the center of the cosmos, because of the simulation hypothesis or the various religious explanations.  There’s no real way to know for sure at this point.  But consider the space of very real possibilities where the universe actually is material, and actually is mostly barren.  Why?
Stepping through the sequence, it might be that abiogenesis is really hard- going from a temperate world to a living one is almost (but not quite) impossible.  Maybe there’s some hurdle to clear between genesis and encephalization.  Maybe, given encephalization, civilization and tool-use are almost impossible.  Or maybe there are many civilizations like ours, and the great filter is ahead of us- it is almost impossible for technological civilizations not to self-destruct or turn in to lotus-eaters before they reach interstellar civilization.  There are a lot of possibilities for the filter, and for present purposes we’ll divide them into two categories: those which we would have already passed, and those which are in our future.
And here’s the thing: for each possibility we can exclude from the great filter, all the other possibilities increase commensurately, becoming more likely in our estimation.  (Assuming the exclusion is ‘clean’ and doesn’t favor some other possibility, that is.)  Given that the silence continues, if we could somehow prove that technological self-destruction isn’t a big risk, that would commensurately increase our guesses about how hard abiogenesis is.
Life on Mars, especially if we could be very sure that it evolved independently of Earth life, would be a strong argument against the difficulty of abiogenesis.  One biosphere in the solar system, and nowhere else, might be down to luck.  The one biosphere has to be somewhere, right?  Two in the solar system, and nowhere else, is a good bit less reasonable.  If we find a second genesis on Mars, then we’ve learned that life is not rare.  That the hundreds of billions of stars in the Milky Way are likely host to many billions of different living (or at least once-living) worlds.
And as wonderful as that news is, as much as it makes me so happy that I literally had to take a second to cry on my bed for a bit, it also makes the great silence much, much scarier.  Today, we can reassure ourselves by saying that life may be rare in the universe.  But what if it isn’t?  If the cosmos is full of life, but not full of thought, then…
If this is the case, we need to know.  We need to know as soon as possible, and we need to know it while we’re engaged in the great project of technological development and moral progress.  It’s easy to imagine that this particular mission is one that can be framed in purely positive terms- the joy of discovery, the vastness of truth, the love of how things might be.  But I do also have this sense of civilizational fragility, you know?  And understanding the risks that we face and the chances we’re taking- that’s not idle curiosity.  That’s genuinely urgent.
