Apprentice's Rumination [short story]

Upon his deathbed, my mentor had this to say; "Apprentice, come close. Listen to my words. As conclusion sets upon my time in this world, I've no regrets. Life has given me gifts aplenty. The passions you wield within, take great pride in them just as I have mine. Though sun may seem to set upon them, know you've potential as-of-yet unseen. Glide along its path, follow it wherever it may take you. Know that its conclusion - like that of mine - will bring fulfillment in its wake. And know, it all means something in the end."

I loved him, though I can’t help but wish he had something more concrete to say.

Words scrawled upon notebook paper. December 15th, reads their date. Below them, their successor - dated December 27th. Its contents lie empty.

Lamplight. Textbooks piled miles high. Jittering in a paw; a pencil. The other holds a wand. Connected to these paws, a rabbit. Patterns and ideas they scribble from their books find themselves brought to life by wrist flicks and dancing motions of their wand - which target a wooden box, sealed shut with an enchanted padlock. A simple object. Concept easy to grasp, interaction spells easy to engage. Twinges of magic energy fire up in little flashes around the lock. The Apprentice’s motions grow frantic. The sparks vanish.

They thrust their pencil down upon the paper. The graphite shatters. Frustrated huffs carry them from their chair across the room. Magician's robes trail their every step, drooping inches off their frame.

Books clutter the room. Shelves filled with them, accented with little magic trinkets. Crystals of all shapes, glowing in all colors. In the corner, a pile of them - colors desaturated and glow snuffed out.

They slump down on their bed. Squeals from its frame protest their arrival. Moonlight speckles down upon them from a bedside window. Streams of light - particles of dust dancing within them - urge drained eyes to gaze out the glass pane. And they cannot find it in themselves to resist the call of looking out.

Out into the world. A world of sprawling industry. Like an infection, it grows over the land. Columns of smoke spew into the sky, suffocating the moon’s embrace. Roadways carve them apart like veins pulsing with the yellow and red glow of car lights.

Somewhere distant, farmland. The Apprentice sees it within their mind. Farmers tending to it with enchanted tools. Their lives, simple. Their tools, effective. That is, until the industry comes. It sweeps them aside. It devours their fertile lands and feeds them back great metal constructs which channel basic magic to tend to what little is left. The farmers take their tools and the crystals that power them, and they dispose of them.

Further still, a great pit dug into the earth. Trucks pulling to it, great baskets on their backs filled with crystals - both drained and active. And they dump them. The pit fills quickly. Mere moments and it's full. They bury it, replace earth on top of it and build over it with yet more factories. Then they leave it and start again elsewhere.

The home of a family, displaced from their farm. Warm sunshine, the chirping of birds. Plants rustle with the breeze. Their child comes home from school, bearing a fresh wand. It is unpolished, its surface threatens to inflict splinters and it is shaped closer to a curve than a straight line. Yet the child manages to levitate a cookie from the cookie jar when their parents aren’t looking. When they see what has been done, they scold the child. They take the child’s wand and sit them down with schoolwork and a pen. The wand is buried and lost somewhere in the woods.

The child ages years in the blink of an eye. Day after day they sit beside a conveyer belt. An artificial wand sits in their grasp. They need not move their arm for it to do its job; assembling more wands just like it. One after another. All the same. Cold, shiny metal. Fluorescent lights reflect off the surfaces of that which they assemble and burn a hole into their eyes.

Erosion.

Work days fade by, and again and again they return to their outer city home. But they don’t rest, no. They eat a meal and they leave home. Off away from the city they drive. Through fields speckled with growth & harvesting channelers. Into the woods. They keep going, deeper and deeper until they settle upon a cabin of wood and stone.

Inside is an old hare. He greets them with warmth and offers them a warm bowl of soup. But they are far too eager. They insist upon his collection of books. Chuckles cross his lips as he lets them at it. And there they stay, nights spent with their nose twitching at their favorite book - Wizarding; History & Purpose Through Time.

One day, the old hare presents them with a gift. A box, sealed behind an enchanted lock. Breaking it would require the fabrication of a spell, he explains. Quite simple. They dive back to the books. 

The Apprentice lifts their head. Wood weighs heavy in their paw, wood which they lift once again. A basic learner’s wand. They stare back over at their desk, at the box sitting upon it. Floorboards creak under their steps as they come back to it. Pages upon pages of notes lie in wait, but they direct their eyes back to the top.

It all means something in the end.

They close the notebook. All attention falls upon the box. Arm lifting, the apprentice allows their eyes to shut. They let their mind free. Boundaries crack and crumble and they explore back through the lands they’d opened before. They soar right over them this time. They soar right over and past them and pay only their end any mind. The smell of warm soup welcomes them to a place oh-so familiar.

Flurries of motion produce a flood of crackling energy. Freeform are their thoughts and their movements. Though thought is given, it takes a second seat to feeling. The feeling of that magical energy in the air that permeates all, the pumping of the blood through their body. The life they are granted the blessing of feeling.

The Apprentice’s ears twitch. Silence consumes the air, and still their eyes hesitate to open. They breathe, in and out. And then, they open their eyes.

The lock has come off, the chest popped open. And what lies within?

A wand. Aged lightly. It is unpolished, its surface threatens to inflict splinters and it is closer to a curve than a straight line. The Apprentice takes hold of it - and tears well up in eyes above a smiling pair of lips.

The temple was so old no one knew who had built it anymore. The village had lost these memories since long ago. All that remained were some vague stories that didn’t matter anymore. Barely anyone bothered to come, even by curiosity.

In the ancient times this was the temple of the god of the moss. Moss was useful for making sturdier walls, or lighting a fire. It was cheap and useful. This little convenience wasn't very important. Even the god of spoons was better considered. At least making a spoon was taking some skill, and had much more uses. So people forgot.

The temple was not beautiful. The temple was not impressive.

It was just a round structure so covered with moss that visitors were not able to distinguish its limits from those of the surrounding trees. All there was a bumpy, green form that wasn’t pleasant to the eyes. No one liked it; in fact, most people were embarrassed to recognize its existence. They made better things since. They prayed to stronger gods now.

Only the warden went every day – they were supposed to pray at dawn. They weren’t always doing it. Some skipped several days in a row, as no one would be there to catch them. Still, they kept on the tradition and cared enough for the old structure not to fall into ruin.

The last one was still a young boy. His predecessor had adopted him when he was a baby and had taught him all he knew. The boy loved his father dearly, and so was taking care of the temple as it was a cherished second home. As he lived far apart from the others, he had no idea that in the village, some strange rumors about the temple were getting stronger. It wasn't that the weather had been particularly bad; they all had known worse, and made do. It wasn't that wars had destroyed the fields either. It was a fact though, it' had been several years that the harvests hadn't been very good. The farmers were skilled, but it didn't seem to matter anymore. Seeds refused to grown properly, when they didn't rot. The village was forced to buy supplies from the others, and the prices were rising. They all were getting hungrier and poorer. To forget these dark times, they told stories. One was that the old, ugly, useless temple had a hidden treasure of gold. After that, it wasn't very long for things to happen.

When a group of grown men asked the young warden to let them in with forks and hammers and shovels, the boy was so surprised he stayed silent a moment, his hand clenching his broom on the threshold. He didn't know what happened. He always ate what he could find from the forest, and he’d always found enough berries, roots and plants. Looking at these frowns and these bad glints in their eyes, he wondered briefly if there had been a war. He was a little scared. He didn't move an inch.

“I can't let you in with your tools”, he said.

One of the grown men with a bald head signaled to the others to act. Two of them held the boy, and seeing that he was struggling, hit him on the back of his head. Leaving him, they forced the door and entered.

The temple had only one room, if you were generous enough to qualify it as such. It had no furniture, nothing to sit on, nothing to pray on. There was only the stone wall. If you had a very good eye, you could have guessed that the large green rock at the center of the room was some kind of altar, but that was all. There was nothing to search. The men tried, though. They tried so hard, you have to give that to them. They ripped off the ground covered with moss, feverishly digging, looking for a glint of gold. All of that in vain. The boy woke up in the destroyed temple with a bleeding head and wide eyes. He pulled himself up as well as he could, and once again he tried to stand against the group of men, asking them what the god had done to get them so angry.

“We don't care about your god,” said one of the men. “People say that there was a chest of emeralds under the altar long ago. What had become of it ?”

The answer was far too quick to be a lie:

“ It was a metaphor in a sacred text. It never really existed.”

The discussion, then the argument that followed is useless to report in detail. It was violent and brief. It ended with a hammer thrown at the boy. It missed its mark, but there were eight men with many cutting tools into their hands. They were all nice people, nicely taking care of their families and their friends, but a strange kind of rage had taken over them. It suddenly seemed to them that in hitting the young warden they avenged themselves and the people they knew from a strange kind of curse. Their hunger they couldn't control, but that fight was manageable. Under the pretext to make the boy tell the truth about the chest of emeralds, they hit him and broke his bones until he fell on the ground for good and stopped breathing. When they realized what they had done, they didn't feel any remorse. They only felt relieved and strangely vindicated, even if they'd found nothing. They turned around and left the bleeding corpse where it was, claiming that they had done their best to fix the situation.

On that, they had made a mistake.

What happened first was the famine. The food that was bought from other villages rotted when it was brought. Then strange illnesses became to happen. The people that were suffering from them said that it was difficult to breathe, as if the air itself was unhealthy. It was only after months – for the process had been so slow – that they discovered that everything around them had become green. The fields, the warehouses, the houses themselves, the furniture, the supplies, the well, nothing had been spared. The people who still lived tried to tore it out, but it grew again and again. People tried. People lost. They ran away. Eventually, the village had no living human left. The corpses left behind made excellent nourishment to the earth.

The boy was still at the center of the temple. Him too had been covered with moss. His wounds would have made the best doctor in the word sweat. As a matter of fact, no human would have looked at him and declared he had a chance to move again. But it wasn't a human who was with him. It examined the body and only saw broken cells.

Moss is very, very good at fixing broken cells.

The wounds were deep and numerous. It didn't matter. Moss is patient. Moss can take its time.

Long, long after all these events, the boy opened his eyes and looked around with surprise.

“Am I alive ?”

“Yes,” a voice answered. “Forever.”

The House.

I have been having a reoccurring place pop up in my dreams every so often.

I dream of a stone house with wood framing.

There is a very specific way to get to the house. First I walk down a natural dirt road. The road follows a river (river on the left) and it's beautiful Forrest scenery. Very green and lush. Peaceful with all the nature sounds and sun rays peeking thru the trees. On the other side of the path opposite the river (right side) is a rock wall. on the other side of the river ( far left) is a steep incline. It's basically like a gorge or canyon in a classic deciduous Forrest.

 

As I follow the path I eventually come to a sewage pipe that tightens near the end of it. I have no choice but to crawl. There is no way around it. It's where to rock wall on my right merges with the water. It's dark and damp.

When I emerge I still find myself on the dirt trail but the road curves ahead. The rock wall remains on the right side after I exit the tunnel and creates a fence barrier to the yard of the house meeting the road at a 90⁰ angle. If you curve with the road slightly there is a transparent wall of trees and brush, a simple log fence, a small embankment and also a small clearing that a path leads to the house property in an open grass feild . If you would continue to go straight after the bend in the road you come to a fork. In the middle of the fork is a huge mountain. The path on the left of the mountain wraps around  and follows the river. To the right of the fork is a bridge that follows the property line and eventually disappears around the mountain.

I have only tried once to leave taking the path to the right (over the bridge) and got lost trying to find my way home again. It lead me far into and up the mountains where i was attacked my bears (also a reoccurance in dreams). So I only use the sewage pipe entrance to come and go.

Back to the house. The house looks out of the 16th century and not very well kept. Once you enter the clearing its bright and sunny (rare for my dreams usually dream in muted twilight colors)  to the left is a man with an old wooden cart. He wears a long white sleeve shirt, sweat stained, and rolled up to his elbows. Brown suspenders and pants. He also wears a farmers hat. I haven't seen his face because his back is usually turned. He does not bother me or interact with me in anyway. The rest of the property is just open grassy feild. The house is two story. Made of gray stones and not very well kept. It's kind of falling apart. The framing of the doors and windows are oakwood with black iron fixtures. There are two windows on either side of the door and the same number to match on the top floor. I cannot see in the windows.

When I enter the house, I enter like I've been there before. As soon as you walk in it is crowed to the brim with stuff. It looks like an antique warehouse and a witches apothecary but someone clearly lives there. Old wood floors with cracks in them where dust and dirt is collecting. To the right is a wood stove surrounded by pots and pans. A red rug laid on the floor and somebody's boots drying by the fire. Hanging on the back wall are tools like axes and gardening tool. Anything a homesteader could ask for. Immediately in front of me are lots of herbs drying, books and cobwebs ,a table filled with freshly farmed food with the dirt still on it. To the left is a rickety staircase that leads to the second floor and an archway under the stairs that leads to a back room. The back room has a little more space to move with an old standing mirror, rocking chair, wooden wardrobe and dresser, and a single bed with white linen and a red plaid blanket folded neatly on the end. When you go upstairs the steps creek and are very steep and uneven. At the top all the rooms are open and filled with items on display. Very much like an antique warehouse. Everything is meant to be sold and has different vendors. It's a maze and everything seemingly connects. My favorite room to visit is the one that sells items like cleansing sage and crystals that's hidden near the back.

The inside of the house is extremely claustrophobic, dusty and dark. No sunlight enters the home and it's almost like the windows disappeared once you enter. There is just stuff everywhere. Sometimes it has other strangers browsing thru the items, sometimes it doesn't.

I have dreamt of this house on 4 occasions. The most recent one I almost came up with a name for it. I was trying to take someone new there and was trying so hard to remember the name, it was on the tip of my tongue. Alas all I got was it has 3 words or syllables in its title.

I also learned my best friend went with me one time to visit because in this dream he was helping me think of the name. ( He doesn't remember his dreams but I wonder if he has dreamt of it too. ) I didn't actually go to the house in my most recent dream but I was remembering how to get there and what it looked like on the inside to plan my next trip.

Born to a family of farmers on an idyllic, tropical, equatorial island on the Lyreca homeworld of Lyre, Ash grew up in a tropical paradise barely touched by humanity's somewhat botched uplift of the Lyreca. That was until an Earth based corporation decided the island would make a great spot for a spaceport. When Ash was still a child, she stood with her family outside their wooden shack of a home, as a flame shrouded, metal behemoth screamed down from the sky above. The colony ship was intended to land, then be dismantled, its superstructure used as the foundation for the spaceport. Instead, the colony ship came down far too hard, impacting the island with enough force that the resulting tremor destroyed almost every single native wooden building on the island, Ash's family home included.

In the aftermath of the disaster, the corporation decided to cut their losses: evacuating almost all of the crew of the colony ship, but abandoning the wreck and the equipment aboard.
