Soooo first post ever and it is because i have gone down the #humansarespaceorcs rabbit hole, and my train of thought was:
Yes humans are weird and do strange things to survive. But more specifically we do weird things to our surroundings to survive, many different things.
What if, it has been a decade or two since the humans joined what ever coalition or council of aliens that work together and as a species they are mostly well known for their ability to grow crops under the worst circumstances (soil, climate anything) ofcourse the other deathworld apex predator human traits make the rounds but over time they seem to assume we cannot surprise them anymore.
Everyone knows that if a planet is ‘owned’ by a certain species they have to pay tax to the coalition, so planets that aren’t particularly useful are undesirable.
This particular planet p-jx-5£2 has been moved around endlessly, given with trade deals to get rid of it. P-jx-5£2 is 97% water, with a very high salt level so inhabitable for all developed aliens. Even though the atmosphere is a nice oxygen base and the gravitational pull allright most for the coalition members the fast spinning moon and the planets quick pace around its sun make the water move and tides switch every 2.5 hours keeping no land dry outside of low tide.
~~~~~~~~
The tall Avian alian il’trexz was elated this day was going to be great, a trade deal with the hardy humans and getting rid of a useless money drain, they didn’t have a clue what they were signing up for!
Turning towards the much smaller bipedal species standing in front of the window looking down on the blue planet that just came into their possession the strange creature mumbled something to them selves, frowning Il’trezx asks ‘im sorry what did you say, you spoke but the translator didn’t pick it up?’ The human (Steve) turned to him away from the window ‘my apologies, i was talking to myself, i said that we had to send the dutch.’ Il’trezx looked befuddled ‘the dutch? Is that some kind of animal?’
Steve threw his head back and made a series of sounds that ruffled the Avians feathers and had he not known it was a laugh it would have made him run for the hills ‘HA I’m going to tell Andreas you said that, no the Dutch is what call people from a country on earth that specialise in these kinds of climates, they’ve been begging for a challenge since they stopped the flooding on the umavi home world.’ With feathers puffed up Il’trezx wonders ‘and they are going to do what? This is an impossible planet’ immediately clasping his beak he looks a the human to see if he seemed angry at being swindled, but to his surprise Steve just looks at him ‘hm so you believe we can’t use this planet. Allright let’s make a bet.’ Interested Il’trezx leans in closer ‘what kind of bet?’ A predatory grin spreads on the bipedal aliens face ‘if we make less of this planet than the amount of tax we have to pay over it we will cover all trade costs for this quarter, insurance, travel all of it.’ Eagerly Il’trezx starts nodding ‘but’ Steve keeps going ‘if we do make more of this planet you will do the same.’
The bet is put onto paper and the higher ups of both parties also agree. In 5 years the Avians would be back and they would balance the costs to the benefits. When they departed Il’trezx says too Steve ‘you must have a lot of faith in these “dutch” ‘ the man grins teeth bared ‘ofcourse, after all they conquered water before’
The five years pass and stories have been going around of a new energy supplier from the humans, producing enough energy to run 78% of their ships and several facilities. Nobody seems to know where it is coming from but no new pollution is measured in any of these facilities. None of this bothers the Avians, after all humans come up with new things all the time.
The five years are up and Il’trezx is invited to the planet with a group of advisors and other officials, the planet which apparently they have renamed to ‘posy’ which is supposed to be short for some kind of sea god from their olden days.
On arrival the amount of coming and going baffles them massive groups of ships docking or docked and all somehow attached to wires that run into machines.
The planets change alone was awe inspiring, two cities on opposite sides of the planet and what seems like millions of weird blades attached to high poles every where. Strange wheels and long walls between towers rising from the rapidly moving waters.
This… this was their new energy source. They somehow made a battery of this uninhabitable planet and then built a home.
On the meeting place Steve is waiting with a man slightly taller than him. Spreading his arms the smaller human says ‘welcome to Poseidon, this is Andreas our main mechanic here. He has been here with planning since orbit 1.’
After the introductions were done Andreas led the group through what they called the Northern city and showed on his device the steps it took to get a foothold and how they proceeded from there, mentioning that many of these steps his home country had used thousands of year ago to gain land from sea, and energy from the movement of water and air. They specialised in this form of terra forming and it showed.
The Avians were astounded, not having realised that there was more than one kind of way the Humans had battled their environment even beating back the waters of their world.
Without a doubt the humans had won the bet and had another legend added to their name. More and more humans showed that with the right motivation they could settle right about anywhere.
********
So yea… my stupid little idea. Hopefully someone will enjoy it. I just liked the idea of specific cultures and stuff. specialising in certain things.
Edit: im amazed people seem to like it! If people have ideas or other cultures they think would baffle aliens, im certainly willing to try and write something
From the Ashes Infinity Comics #15: Pygmalion, Part 1
So, for those who are not aware - Infinity Comics are online-only comics distributed through Marvel Unlimited, their subscription based app and browser collection of comics. Regarded as 'inessential,' but still very much canon, the raft of Infinity Comics coming out of From the Ashes have been quite good, but I haven't seen fit to comment on them for a bit, until now, because . . .
Tumblr media
Let's go.
Tumblr media
For those not aware, Pygmalion is a famous novel by George Bernard Shaw, detailing the attempt by a phonetics professor called Henry Higgins to 'elevate' a Cockney flower-girl named Eliza Doolittle.
Intrigued by a bet that he could pass her off as a duchess through careful schooling, he decides to take her on, and though he succeeds, she ends up feeling marginalised and overlooked, treated as an object of gambling and curiosity rather than an individual in her own right, and though the play is best known for the 'culturing' of Eliza Doolittle, it is as much about the arrogance of Higgins, who is a thoroughly unpleasant and rude individual, in thinking that he has any ownership over Eliza for his education of her. He may have 'created' her, but he does not control her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Factory that the X-Men are living in at present must have really good central heating for Cyclops to be wearing basketball shorts and a crop top that short.
Beast is currently investigating some kind of issue with Magneto's chromosomes - to put it succinctly, he appears to be ageing rapidly, and does not have access to his X-gene at present. This is a continuation of the storyline in the previous Infinity arc, which focused on Magneto.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Something worth noting - this is the first acknowledgement of the fact that though Hank's body may be of roughly the same physical age as his original, his mind is considerably younger, situated at some point in his mid 20s. For someone who was always the oldest of the original X-Men, this is fairly significant.
Also worth noting - Hank joins the ranks of superheroes who are actively seeking therapy for their problems! Good on you, Hank! And good on you, too, Scott, for suggesting it. Though, perhaps, given recent developments in the mainline X-Men comics, you should take your own advice . . .
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The fact that Hank refers to himself as the only one left seemingly confirms that X-Force took care of the Beast clones who Beast Prime planted around various landmarks as part of the Ghost Calendars arc. Though they were defeated in their respective future timelines, I wasn't quite sure if they had been taken care of in the present as well. This seemingly confirms that they were.
Hank's therapist is Dr. Andrea Sterman, a supporting character from Jed MacKay's Moon Knight run, and a member of the Midnight Mission. Given that the writer, Alex Paknadel, confirmed on Twitter that he talked with Jed MacKay about making sure all the details for Hank's storyline would line up with the mainline X-Men book, I can only imagine this was done as a rather fun continuity nod.
Hank also refers to a Shi'ar warship, an avian alien race that the X-Men deal with on a regular basis. This makes sense, given that Hank was beamed aboard the Shi'ar imperial flagship during the events of Dark Phoenix Saga in 1981 - ancient history for us, but relatively fresh in Hank's mind, given his memories come from 1985.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hank, naturally, does himself a disservice here. Dark Beast was, assumedly, abducted at a relatively young age from his human parents, and indoctrinated by Mister Sinister as something of a protege - a protege living in perpetual fear of his mentor. He probably didn't have a chance to develop any kind of moral code divorced from the social Darwinist hellhole that is the Age of Apocalypse.
That being said, Hank probably lacks that context, and Dark Beast is unique among Age of Apocalypse denizens, not just for his unerringly cruel nature, having never shown any altruistic tendencies (unlike, say, AoA Cyclops or Nightcrawler), but also for his resilience. He persists, even now - though last seen in Immortal X-Men #9 as a head in a jar, he has come back from the dead at least twice before, and it is unlikely he is gone for good.
Fun fact - his appearance here is based on the costume he wore during his scrap with Emma Frost's X-Men team in a confrontation with Spider-Man and the Lizard. Though the X-Men naturally encountered him after this point, it's fun that this appearance by Dark Beast is considered iconic enough to be the 'definitive' look for him by this comic.
Hank's final remark, about 'Henry McCoy plus time equals atrocity,' is a sentiment often repeated on social media boards, and it's interesting to see it being internalised by Hank himself, given his unique perspective on the events that created his future self and the other potential timelines the X-Men files likely refer to.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mm. A lot to unpack here.
Hank's relationship with his X-gene has always been complicated, and the way he views it here, as essentially morphing him into a shape that he finds abhorrent, predatory, and beyond his control, is consistent with how Hank seemed to see himself during his feline mutation, which lasted from 2000 to 2013.
Though his feline phase is not referenced in this comic, beyond the 'over time, and with a little help, these became more pronounced,' (probably a reference to Sage's jumpstarting his secondary mutation) it assumedly would be in the files Hank has been using to catch up, and one has to wonder if he's been repeating some of the thought processes that made feline Hank such a uniquely neurotic version of the character.
It's also nice to see a canonisation of my long held fanon that Hank's X-gene is actively attempting to craft a form for him that is best suited for survival, a belief that Hank only hinted at back in Morrison's New X-Men, but which made sense, given the circumstances of his mutation in X-Treme X-Men.
That being said, Hank's own mind seemingly strays back to the night his furry mutation first manifested at the Brand Corporation in Amazing Adventures, where he flew into a berserker rage and nearly killed Carl Maddicks, which always seemed a little incongruous with how Hank was written in subsequent appearances in Avengers and Defenders, but which now seems to be retroactively made an expression of the brutality he was capable of during his feline phase.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The 'violent upheavals' Hank refers to here are likely his initial secondary mutation, and then his near-death experience when said mutation randomly destabilised in All-New X-Men. It could also be a reference to his numerous genetic troubles during X-Factor volume 1.
His opining that he found refuge in the life of the mind is very reminiscent of Hank's desire to find meaning in poetry, literature, art, humanity, in the wake of the changes in his body in both X-Factor and New X-Men. X-Factor #33 and New X-Men #117 both specifically reference his delight in the freedom to think, in opposition to the clouding of the mind that came with his Pestilence inflicted dumbing down, or his newly awakened predatory impulses.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ironically enough, Magneto is, aside from Simon Williams, the character with whom this version of Hank has shared the most panel time and dialogue, between his conversations in X-Men and previous From the Ashes Infinity Comics. It would appear that Max's need for a cure for his condition are fostering a necessarily stronger bond than Hank and Max have ever shared before in canon.
Precisely where the rest of the team is during the course of these events is unknown. If I had to guess, it's possible this might be set during the events of X-Men #2, where the rest of the team was attending to a mutant rescue in San Francisco, accounting for the lack of availability of the Marauder and a reliance on an old Quinjet.
Quite how Hank got his hands on said Quinjet is unknown, though it's possible it might be a holdover from Hank's Defender days, where he would regularly borrow a Quinjet from the Avengers, for purposes ranging from actual superhero missions to attending Patsy Walker's wedding.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Though this Hank's memories originate in closest proximity to the Defenders, and though that team did enjoy some degree of notoriety under Hank and Candy Southern's stewardship, the Avengers have always been where Hank was most popular in-universe, and he has had a habit of using that association to smooth things over in mutant related books, such as in X-Factor volume 1 and the 90s X-Men run.
Unfortunately, mutant rights are in a more dire state than ever before, with things having seemingly gotten only worse for them since the 1980s, and it's likely Hank didn't expect this level of hatred from normal civilians.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have, unfortunately, run out of images, so I'll be posting the last of this issue and my final thoughts and predictions in another post.
#BookRecommendation: Birds of the World: The Art of Elizabeth Gould by Andrea Hart & Ann Datta (2023)
“Artist and illustrator Elizabeth Gould is finally given the recognition she deserves in this gorgeous volume that includes hundreds of her stunning and scientifically precise illustrations of birds from nearly every continent. For all of her short life, Elizabeth Gould’s artistic career was appreciated through the lens of her husband, ornithologist John Gould, with whom she embarked on a series of ambitious projects to document and illustrate the birds of the world. Elizabeth played a crucial role in her husband’s lavish publications, creating beautifully detailed and historically significant accurate illustrations of over six hundred birds -many of which were new to science. However, Elizabeth’s role was not always fully credited and, following her tragic death aged only thirty-seven, her efforts and talent were nearly forgotten. This marvelous volume offers a new and timely tribute to Elizabeth’s reputation and skill. It opens with an introduction to her life and achievements that reflects the latest scholarship. Following is a geographically organized collection of full-color plates depicting birds from nineteenth-century Europe, South and Central America, Africa, Asia, and Australia including previously unpublished original artworks. Filled with the highest quality reproductions, this volume allows readers to appreciate first-hand Gould’s talent for capturing the unique character of each species and the beauty of avian diversity. At the same time it offers a valuable reconsideration of a woman who left a lasting legacy as one of the greatest bird painters of all time.”
Part 1
This story had been on my mind for a long time, and I finally got the time to write it! Please let me know if you liked it!
Long ago, in a land far away, there was an enchanted grove in a forest. The grove was home to a village of fairies – small, androgynous humanoid creatures with colourful wings on their backs, most often similar to those of insects. The fairies had made their home there in trees and bushes, weaving twigs and leaves together and creating beautiful but delicate burrows. They were magic, spawn of spirits and animals, and their sole purpose in life was to protect nature.
All was well in this fairy grove on most days. However, there wasn’t peace, not really.
A black sheep – or more likely, a black bird – lived there among them. While most fairies trace their lineage back to insects, this one was born of a magpie. She was taller than them by at least a thumb’s length, and like her avian heritage, she was a troublemaker. Due to her size and manoeuvrability in the air, the magpie would often harass the smaller fairies. Pulling on their legs, hair, and wings, stealing their food, verbally harassing them, and other pranks. The magpie was a nasty fellow, who unsurprisingly had little friends. She lived in a great oak on the edge of the village, claiming a big knothole as her home. It used to be that this tree was the middle of the community, but many of the other fairies relocated when their unpleasant neighbour moved in.
Years had gone by. The harassment never ceased.
Libelle, leader of the village, decided that she had to act.
‐‐-------<@>‐‐-------
“So, you want me to, what? Scare her?” Andreas asked, looking down at the little fairy standing next to where he sat in the clearing. His pants were slightly stained from mud and grass, as was often the case when the fairy’s human friend visited her.
“Yes,” Libelle answered. She was a perfect example of a textbook fairy. Her short hair was light brown and slightly wavy, her dress was handmade from rose petals, and her wings obviously resembled those of a dragonfly. Even her tan skin showed a slight ethereal shimmer. “She picks on us because we’re smaller. It’s time for her to get a taste of her own medicine!” Libelle jumped in the air, her wings dropping fairy dust everywhere as she flew up to Andreas’ face and grabbed onto his glasses.
“I’m not so sure about that, Belle.” The human said softly, as he held up his hands underneath the fairy to give her a better place to land. “I’m not really what you would call an, uh, intimidating person.” Andreas tucked his shaggy blonde hair behind his ears and adjusted his glasses. To say that he was shy was an understatement. Most young men his age had had quite a few brawls to their belt, but Andreas had never been interested in them. “Conflict-avoidant” was what some nicer people called him. “Wimp” or “coward” were terms he was used to.
Consolingly, Libelle placed her hand on his thumb. “Maybe to humans, but not to us little folk. Remember how terrified I was when we first met?”
“And you think I wasn’t?” He laughed. “I grew up hearing all kinds of stories about not angering the fairies of the woods, and there I was holding a crying one in my hands. I thought you were going to curse me!” Andreas thought back to that day years ago. He had been picking wild berries and accidentally grabbed a fistful of fairy instead. Both had been in shock as they locked eyes, but in the end, they had managed to somehow become friends instead.
“Curses aren’t real.” Libelle reminded him. “Witches can curse you. Fairies play tricks.”
“I didn’t know that back then, okay?” Andreas argued. “And as far as this ‘trick’ you have planned for this magpie goes, I’m not sure if it’s not a bit too much?”
Libelle patted his hand. “It’s fine. Not like animals are interested in hunting us. Also, no human ever comes to these woods. A few hours won’t hurt her.”
“If you say so…”
‐‐-------<@>‐‐-------
Libelle was at easy to find, gathering food at one of her usual spots. Dumb thing had a special connection or something to this one redcurrant bush, among others. Not that the magpie could ever relate to that. She didn’t have a special purpose or magic abilities like the other, insect-kind fairies. Couldn’t sprinkle stupid fairy dust wherever she went and make flowers bloom, or other nonsense. No, she was on this earth for one reason alone: To be an utter bastard.
Swooping in from above, the magpie grabbed Libelle from behind and put her in a headlock. “Why, hello there little one,” she taunted, pressing her claws into the ground to balance out the smaller fairy’s struggling. “Good old Libelle. My, you’re always such a nice little perfect picture book fairy, aren’t you? But what’s that?” The magpie let go of Libelle and shoved her to the ground. Quickly, she pressed one of her bird-like legs into the smaller one’s back, preventing her from getting up, and then picked up one of the dropped berries in front of the two. Slowly, she took a bite, but spit it out immediately. “Ew, disgusting!” The magpie dropped the berry in front of Libelle, then squashed it with her other foot. “For someone who is always so prim and proper, you have quite the sour appetite, little Libby. Something’s not right with you.” She laughed, high and catty.
Then suddenly, a whirlwind came crashing through the brambles and yanked the magpie off her victim.
“No, something’s not right with you!” A human yelled at her, holding her in both of his hands and was slightly shaking her back and forth. After a second of disorientation, the magpie began to struggle against his sweaty grip. “Yeah, sucks to get grabbed by someone bigger than you, doesn’t it?” He taunted the magpie with a smile.
Meanwhile, Libby had flown over to them, and had the audacity to land on the giant’s shoulder. Wearing a smug grin, she said, “Let me introduce to you my good friend, Andreas the human. He didn’t like it at all when I told him about your behaviour.”
The magpie wanted nothing more than to smack that stupid smile off her face, to pull on her wings until she screamed and cried. But for now, she kicked her feet against the human’s arms, scratching him until he flinched from the pain and red stained the torn fabric. Finally free, the magpie rose to the skies and flew in a wide circle above the two, before landing on a branch right above him. “Friend, eh? What, the little miss goody two-shoes took pity on a nasty bastard like you? Did she tell you that you’re gonna be a big hero?” The magpie looked down on the man, who still held his scratched-up arms. “Heroes usually aren’t uglier than a troll, and they don’t stink twice as bad, you useless sack of shit!”
That seemed to get a reaction out of the hideous brute. Good. “Am I wrong? You can’t amount to anything on your own with a face like that. Hah, I bet not even your mother loves you, having a revolting visage like you do.”
“Stop it, you- you vile bird!” The human protested, which made the magpie only more agitated. She rose to the skies again and circled right above the ugly giant, high enough that he couldn’t grab her.
“Troll! Ogre! I bet you trip over your own feet! You’re sweaty and you smell like you’re taking your daily bath in a sewer!” The magpie was yelling out insults at full blast, even daring to swoop down and pull on single strands of the man’s hair. “The fairy princess and the human orc, what a fitting pair!”
Then something happened as she swooped down again. Suddenly, she was restricted inside a… net! Had the bastard just played weak to lure her back in? “Let me go, you rotten, disgusting, vomit-inducing-“ the magpie kept swearing, all the while Libelle cheered and the human bound the net into a bag. Pulling and biting at the mesh proved fruitless. The assholes had somehow made one from pure iron.
“That’s what you get from being a vile, mean bully!” Libelle yelled gleefully, while her ugly friend fastened the net to a branch. “Maybe hanging here for a few hours will make you reconsider how you act with other people.” They turned around and walked away, leaving the magpie speechless for a second.
“You- How dare you! Libby you insolent idiot, come back right now! I will rip out your wings for this, do you get me?!”
‐‐-------<@>‐‐-------
They weren’t lying. Hours passed and nobody came back to free her. The magpie yelled insults and threats a few times in case anyone was near, but nobody appeared. Occasionally, some animals would come to check it out, but it wasn’t like they could help her. Being one with nature just wasn’t in it for her. Leave it to the stupid grove fairies to cuddle with squirrels and befriend sparrows. All the magpie got were a few crows curiously nipping at her until she hurled insults at them too. For the most part, the magpie was left hanging there alone. Not before long, lying on the wire net began to hurt. Worst of all, thanks to the bumbling human troll, one of her feathers was completely bent!
Then she heard it - there was the sound of a huge fool tumbling through the bushes and trampling the grass. “Finally there you are you gross idiot! I swear Libby, you and all your stupid little friends will-“ Standing before her at eye level wasn’t the ugly four eyes. This human was slender, refined, with long dark hair pulled back into a perfect ponytail. Actually, he wore glasses too. He seemed just as surprised as she was. “Who the fuck are you?!”
The human didn’t answer. Slowly, his lips curled into a smile as he kept staring at her. Somehow, it unnerved the magpie. “Hey asshole, I’m talking to you. Are you deaf?” A hand gloved in leather rose up to cup the underside of the net, while the other hand pulled out a knife and began cutting it lose. “Finally, at least you’re useful for something. Can’t believe I have to be rescued by some other human idiot.”
“Who said anything about ‘rescue’?” The human said calmly, his voice pleasant as if they were talking about the weather.
“What?” asked the magpie, confused. His expression did not falter as he kept working. The fairy now noticed that he wasn’t cutting the mesh – he was simply cutting the leash binding the net to the tree, while his other hand wasn’t just cupping her, it was gripping the loops. “No. No, you will let me go you prim and proper wannabe woodsman, you hear me? Do you know what will happen to you if you treat a fairy like this? I will curse you! I will course your wrinkly, hairy ass for at least 5 generations, you hear me?!”
The fingers holding onto the net suddenly yanked at it, making the magpie tumble. “Please, don’t take me for a fool, little fairy. I know that your kind does not do curses.” He yanked again and again, until finally, the leash broke. Before she could even look for an opening, the other hand dropped the knife and grabbed her out of the air. One of her wings was squished uncomfortably to her back, while the other one was stretched out, equally uncomfortable.
“You rotten bastard! Let me go this instant, or I will make your life hell. I don’t even need a curse to do it!” He ignored her, instead focusing on the wing in front of his face. Slowly, almost gently, his finger ran down the individual feathers, as if he was counting them. He stopped at the one that was bent. With one swift motion, he yanked it out.
The magpie screamed, clawing and thrashing against his grip, while the human dropped the bloody black-and-white feather to the ground. “I have no need for damaged tools,” he informed her, his stupid voice betraying no emotions.
“You’re the one that’s got some kind of damage!” She shouted at him, ready to hurl more insults at the human, until she noticed that he moved her to his bag. “No. No, I said no! You asshole, are you deaf?!”
“Oh shut up, will you? You’re the most foul-mouthed fairy I’ve ever seen!” He hissed, and with one hasty motion stuffed her into his bag. The human closed it shut, making sure that the trapped creature had no means to escape, before turning on his heels and walking back from where he came.
‐‐-------<@>‐‐-------
“Don’t you think that we may have left her there a bit too long?” The human worried loudly. They slowly walked – well, he walked; Libelle sat on his shoulder. The leaves of trees and bushes were cloaked in the golden light of the setting sun as they made their way through the forest
His fairy friend just shrugged. “Believe me, she once set up a honey trap that had Hummel and some others stuck to a tree for days before we could get them out. I think she got off easy.” Libelle jumped off his shoulder and flew around a tree and high into the sky. “Now, magpie, did you calm down a bit?”
There was no answer. In general, the area was way too quiet in general.
Andreas and Libelle shared a worried look, before running into the clearing. The very much silent and empty clearing. The magpie was gone.
“Oh no, she’s surely planning her revenge right now.” The fairy flew around, scanning the trees and bushes. “Magpie? Magpie! You can come out now, you know? I don’t care what you’ve got planned!”
Meanwhile, Andreas inspected where the magpie had been bound to. The branch was showing signs of damage, specifically scratches done with a blade. Then there was the fact that only the leather leash he had used was lying on the ground, definitely cut in two, and no sign of the actual iron wire net. The man knelt down and found a twisted and bent black-and-white feather lying on the ground. “I… I don’t think she’s still around here…” He whispered, horrified by the revelation of how their “little prank” had gone wrong.
“Wait, what are you saying? That she was-“ Libelle did not dare to finish that thought. She didn’t want it to be real. Sure, she wanted for the magpie to get a little payback, but not like that!
“It… seems like there’s been a human here,” Andreas spoke out the fact, his mouth dry. “And they probably cut her lose. And, I mean, it’s possible that they couldn’t free her from the net with the tools they hadat hand, but, uh…”
They both looked at the path of broken twigs and scattered leaves. Finally, Libelle broke the silence.
“Shit.”
HELLO CC FANDOM!!
A few folks and I over on one of the Criminal Case Discord Servers have been brainstorming a CC AU concept! We call it WildSide!CC (Or WS!CC, CC:WS, etc.), and it essentially involves various characters re-imagined as animal-people, set in a universe where humans have a few animal-like features (Like how catboys have tails and ears I guess?). Here's what we came up with:
Characters:
We only have a few characters so far, so bear (lol) with us!
(Season 1)
Nathan - Snow leopard, people just refer to him as a catboy though, which he doesn't really mind
Jones - Husky-Golden Retriever mix
Grace - Red Fox
Alex - Avian, specifically a Blue Jay
Ramírez - Honey Badger
Cathy - Axolotl
Tony - Tiger (no pun intended)
Chief King - Lion
Ginger - Secretary bird
Alden - Andean Cock-Of-The-Rock (🫵😂)
(Season 2)
Amy - Penguin
Frank - Brown Bear
Karen - White Peacock
Yann - Lobster
Roxie - Parrot
Hannah - Ram
Russell - Spider
Andrea - Panther
(Season 5)
Zoe - Shima Enaga
Martine - Lynx
Some helpful tips!
It's typically a little frowned upon to ask people (especially dogfolk) what "breed" they are. If they're open about it, they'll tell you. Otherwise it's kind of intrusive to ask.
No, catnip is not like weed for cats. Still, felinefolk with the gene that makes them respond to catnip are advised against using it in professional settings.
There are insect-people! The most common are beetlefolk.
Feral (normal) animals still exist, and are owned as pets. It's nothing weird to them.
Bird people have wings, though they’re not very useful: they’re there for warmth, or cosmetic purposes.
People who are "bigger" birds like eagles, vultures etc. can, with great effort, hover above ground for a few seconds but that's about it.
Mythical animals are allowed! Dragons, unicorns, etc.
Meowing at catfolk is seen as strange. Think of it as if you cooed at a grown adult.
Avians still molt! Some bird-parents like to keep the feathers they shed in “feather albums”.
Bird-people have bird-like feet but they're not as thin as regular bird’s. Same thickness as a human’s, but they have all the scales that birds do.
As babies, arachnids do have these sort of pseudo-limbs accompanying their actual human arms. These limbs are very spider-like, but they shed them after a while. It’s a little bit of a gross process, as they fall off like teeth, but it's better to let them shed these "legs", as taking them off manually is painful and can result in scarring if done too early.
OCs are allowed and encouraged! Be it you make a character for this AU specifically or take a fan character you already had and make them fit into the AU, that's completely fine! also please tag me if you do I'd love to see it
And, finally:
While this is, technically, a CC:WS "masterpost," don't take this as an end-all-be-all! If you want to add your own canon, switch up your favorite character's species, or divert from what we've stated here in any way, feel free! No hard limit, no rules other than to have fun :D
(big big shoutout to @transgnderflag for helping with species hcs AND organizing our brainstorms into a neat lil list!! :3)
Turkeys Can Swim—and Other Fun Facts For Thanksgiving Table Talk! There's Much More To America's Holiday Bird Than White and Dark Meat.
— Published: November 21, 2018 | Thursday November 23, 2023 | By Mark Strauss
Every year at Thanksgiving, families and friends gather to share personal stories and perhaps reflect on the early history of the United States. But aside from deciding whether to ask for seconds, not much is said about the guest of honor at the holiday table: the turkey. That’s a shame, since that big, tasty bird has left a significant mark on history, science, language, and culture. So maybe on this Thanksgiving, take a moment to appreciate the turkey’s story with these remarkable facts and anecdotes gathered from across the centuries.
Alpha Turkeys 🦃🦃🦃
After an exhaustive study of wild turkeys in southeastern Texas, researchers were startled to discover that the community of birds is “characterized by an astonishing degree of social stratification, greater than had previously been seen in any society of vertebrates short of man.”
“The Social Order of Turkeys,” published in the June 1971 issue of Scientific American, described an avian dystopia where the permanent status of each individual is determined in the first years of its life. Young males, for instance, engage in a grueling two-hour battle. The victor gains alpha male status and the right to bully the vanquished turkey for as long as it lives. During breeding season, the dominant males gather together and literally strut their stuff in unison before the females, like a scene out of West Side Story. But despite the synchronous display, only the most dominant of the alpha male turkeys—six out of 170—are allowed to mate.
Turkeys 🦃🦃🦃 Among the Maya
"For the Maya, turkeys were quintessential animals for feasting and for sacrificial offerings,” writes University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee art historian Andrea Stone. The reverence for the turkey among the ancient Maya is apparent in their stunning artistic depictions of the bird—with its characteristic drooping wattle—on vases and in codices. Historians had long thought that the Maya had domesticated the turkey sometime between A.D. 250 and 1000, but upon closer examination of turkey bones found in the ancient city of El Mirador, researchers at the University of Florida concluded that the Maya had domesticated the birds a thousand years earlier than previously estimated.
Text found in the Dresden Codex reveal that the Maya cooked turkey tamales. If you’d like to add a little spice to your traditional Thanksgiving meal, chef Julie Powell has re-created the recipe.
Watch Your Language
Considering that it was once deemed indecent for a woman to expose her ankles, we shouldn’t be surprised that prurient diners adopted anatomical euphemisms while serving turkey and other poultry.
In the mid-1800s, the term “drumstick” entered popular use to avoid the scandal of expressing desire for a bird’s lower leg. Likewise, according to culinary historian Mark Morton, “Prudery was also the impetus behind the adoption of the terms ‘white meat’ and ‘dark meat,’ which arose in the 1870s as euphemisms for the breast and legs.”
All-Star Athletes
Look! Up in the sky! Wild turkeys can fly short distances at 40 to 50 miles an hour. (Domestic turkeys can’t, a factoid that was used to great comedic effect in the famous Thanksgiving episode of WKRP in Cincinnati.) Wild turkeys can also run 12 miles an hour and, completing the triathlon, they are actually adept swimmers. They move through the water by tucking their wings in close, spreading their tails, and kicking.
Granted, wild turkeys don’t swim often. As John James Audubon wrote in 1831, “I have been told by a friend that a person residing in Philadelphia had a hearty laugh on hearing that I had described the Wild Turkey as swimming for some distance, when it had accidentally fallen into the water. But be assured, kind reader, almost every species of land-bird is capable of swimming on such occasions, and you may easily satisfy yourself as to the accuracy of my statement by throwing a Turkey, a Common Fowl, or any other bird into the water.” (Actually, please don’t do that.)
Ben Franklin and the National Bird
Although the esteemed Founding Father once declared the wild turkey to be more virtuous than the bald eagle, there’s scant evidence that he preferred it as the national symbol of his new country.
Franklin’s feathers got ruffled when, in 1783, he learned that the Society of the Cincinnati—a group of officers under the command of George Washington—wanted to establish a hereditary order of merit, to be passed down from oldest son to oldest son. Franklin, a fifth-generation youngest son, expressed disdain for the officers and their aristocratic trappings, including their choice of the eagle as the emblem for their badge.
In a letter to his daughter, Sarah Bache, he wrote, “For my own part I wish the bald eagle had not been chosen as the representative of our country. He is a bird of bad moral character. He does not get his living honestly … For in truth, the turkey is in comparison a much more respectable bird, and withal a true original native of America.”
But did Franklin truly regret the eagle as the national symbol? As author Elizabeth Gawthrop Riely writes in the journal Gastronomica, “The sober historian must be skeptical. After all, eight years earlier, in 1776, he himself had served on the committee with Jefferson and Adams when the turkey was not chosen, and at other instances Franklin used the eagle rather than the turkey as an emblem. No other evidence in the vast Franklin archive mentions his support of the turkey as national bird.”
More likely Franklin, knowing that his lengthy letter would probably be published in U.S. newspapers, singled out the eagle as part of a larger cautionary tale against creating aristocratic institutions.
The Turkey-in-Chief
The tradition of sending a Thanksgiving turkey to the White House began during the administration of President Ulysses S. Grant, who was gifted with a 34-pound bird by Rhode Island Senator H.B. Anthony on behalf of turkey growers in his state.
However, Cornell University anthropologist Magnus Fiskesjö writes that the formal custom of pardoning a Thanksgiving turkey began in Alabama, “where the ceremony was first invented in the 1940s as a governor’s ritual,” before it was “exported to the capital.”
John F. Kennedy is sometimes credited with the first presidential pardon of a turkey when he declared, "Let's keep him going." According to the White House Historical Association, “The formalities of pardoning a turkey gelled by 1989, when George H. W. Bush, with animal rights activists picketing nearby, quipped,"'Reprieve,' ‘keep him going,’ or ‘pardon’: It's all the same for the turkey, as long as he doesn't end up on the president's holiday table.”
Talking Turkey 🦃
Turkeys produce several different distinct sounds beyond their famous gobble (more of an ill-obble-obble-obble), which is uttered to attract females and establish territory. Other “words” in the turkey lexicon: a contact call that sounds like a yelp (keouk, keouk, keouk), an alarm (putt), and a cluck that’s used as an assembly note (kut).
A Wily Opponent
While domesticated turkeys are regarded as docile dullards, hunters across the centuries, including Theodore Roosevelt, have deemed the bird’s feral brethren to be cunning adversaries.
“The wild turkey is, in every way, the king of American game birds,” the future president wrote in 1893. “[It] really deserves a place beside the deer; to kill a wary old gobbler with the small-bore rifle, by fair still-hunting, is a triumph for the best sportsman.”
Born to be Wild
Concerns that wild turkeys might become extinct peaked in the early 20th century, when the U.S. government released dire statistics on their declining numbers nationwide. “These are diminishing so fast that 1920 will see the finish of the turkey tribe unless the authorities take a hand,” declared an editorial in the December 19, 1912, issue of the Aberdeen Herald.
Some sought to save the bird through a raise-and-release program. “The experiment is being made in California, and also in New York State, where the Game Breeders’ association (an influential and wealthy organization of public spirited men), is already raising wild turkeys on a considerable scale on its breeding farms, some hundreds of the birds having been trapped in Virginia and the Carolinas for this purpose,” reported the El Paso Herald on November 25, 1911.
But the game-farm idea was a failure. "Turkeys that were raised in those situations did not have the opportunity for the hen to teach what predators would eat them,” explained James Earl Kennamer of the National Wild Turkey Federation in Edgefield, South Carolina. “It was like taking a kid out of New York City and putting him in the woods and saying, 'Go hunt.' They didn't know what to do."
The turning point came in 1951 when wildlife biologists in South Carolina devised a method of capturing wild turkeys with a net shot from a cannon—enabling the biologists to release them into habitats where wild turkeys were scarce or nonexistent. By 1973 the wild turkey population had rebounded to 1.5 million, and today it numbers nearly seven million.
New research into the minds of crows has revealed a jaw-dropping finding: the canny corvids aren't just clever - they also possess a form of consciousness, able to be consciously aware of the world around them in the present. In other words, they have subjective experiences.
This is called primary, or sensory, consciousness, and it had only previously been demonstrated in primates - which means we now may have to rethink our understanding of how consciousness arises, in addition to reconsidering the avian brain.
"The results of our study opens up a new way of looking at the evolution of awareness and its neurobiological constraints," said animal physiologist Andreas Nieder of the University of Tübingen.
The Old World
Tumblr media
(A note: every land has their own unique magic some can use, but those magics don't travel well Likewise, every land has their own means of sacrificing to the Powers to ensure their survival.)
Andreas Cluster: an alliance of islands whose magic let them read the thoughts of each others. Those with it could not go near outsiders, however. (Their collective sacrifice to the Powers was and remains the ability to read or write.)
Curéhain: a land inside the Jagged Walls. Not well known as it was hard to get to and they sacrificed their own royal line to the Powers, which other lands thought was a bit mad. It was rather old and quite isolated.
Elshom: an alliance of islands mostly at peace, because it was very hard for them to die. All of them had their magic, which healed almost any wound and sickness one was not born with, and they traded to find ways to give their lives meaning. (They sacrifice to the Powers the ability to feel pain.)
Empty Ports: Rather barren land used for farm animals and little more. No magic exists here.
Inner Ring/Outer Ring: the centre of all trade and power in the old world, due to the alliance between all thousand islands and use of sea magic that came at a hgh, high price. Their sailors were famed; their fishing trawlers feared.
Jagged Walls: A continent of mountains and cliffs that made for poor posts; mostly ignored.
Moving Isles: glaciers.
Pebble Isles: Smaller isles that mostly kept to themselves. They had the magic to kill with a glance, so were left alone.
Ruin Wood: a continent decimated to make fishing vessels.
Scaloun: an alliance of islands whose magic manifested as extra limbs and allowed those with them to do more than others could. All avian life was sacrificed to the Powers when possible.
Screer: a series of sometimes-real islands whose inhabitants were adept at illusions. The price they paid to the Powers was to be about as uncreative as it is possible to be.
Sky Death: home of flying people who defended their fishing rights and land viciously. Little is known about them, nor how many survived the Turning.
The Broken Arrow: a landmass turned into islands; they were a solid source of trade and their magic was to reshape the islands. There are no cities and no one can remain still for long, their sacrifice to the Powers.
