hozier really makes albums that are just like: here’s a song about how love is tragic love is death love is torturous oh but also it is the sustenance of life and we find reasons to endure all of that because we find another person who makes it wortwhile and there is beauty in the grip of love. now here’s a song with heavy social commentary on bigotry and corruption and western colonization and the death of languages and how fucked the world is sometimes oh but also we must build revolutions and fight back and there are countless who do and who have over time and there is hope, so much hope, hope of our own making that what is good and just will prevail. now here’s a song about nothing lasts and existence is futile but also god is it precious, so precious, and we must seize it by the neck and run with it. now here’s a song about transcendence and also would you love me if I were a worm? oh now here’s another song about love and death. and by the way I’m going to form a cohesive narrative throughout the album by taking inspiration from famous literary works, mythology, and concepts. no there are no breaks or intermissions in my album, no room to breathe at all. what do you mean you have whiplash. what is that.

one thing that drives me absolutely insane wild feral is the fact that hozier is not sick of playing take me to church. he plays it like it’s new every single time and without a doubt it moved the crowd in such immeasurable ways. i cannot speak enough to how refreshing it felt to be there and experience that alongside all of the other songs he played. he is gods gift to earth and we do not appreciate him enough.

Take Me To Church and Foreigner’s God are scathing critiques of organized religion, specifically the Catholic Church and the colonization of Ireland.

Moment’s Silence is about oral sex but it’s ALSO about how that specific sexual act is often distorted to a show of power rather than that of love.

Nina Cried Power is an homage to various (mostly Black) civil rights activists from the US and Ireland and a call to follow their path.

Be criticizes anti-migrant policies and Trump and his ilk.

Jackboot Jump is about the global wave of fascism and about protest and resistance.

Swan Upon Leda is about reproductive rights and the violent colonial oppression of Ireland and Palestine.

Eat Your Young is about the ruinous way the 1%/capitalism and arms dealers prioritize short-term profit over everything else to the detriment of the youth/99%

Butchered Tongue is about Irish and other indigenous languages being suppressed and erased by imperial powers.
