I think andromeda becomes ares’ friend actually. like she spends the last third of book 2 sleeping next to him, notably between howard and gregor at the very end, and goes to check on him between books 2 & 3, even hauling a very sick ares back to regalia (so she’s extremely strong) like I want to think she starts looking out for him and making sure he doesn’t sneak off again. I want to think ares gets more people in his corner

Andromeda’s girl was a daring flier, even with a supposed Potter clinging to her back. The both of them cast spells aimed at her and her husband. They dodged them effortlessly. She was at home in the sky, always had been. And Rodolphus had played Quidditch professionally for a little while. They’d be no match for them.

She was hunting tonight, and she’d have a body to present to her master before dawn. A weed that she would uproot.

Ok, with the Alola Dexholders winning the poll,

let’s start with them. I was in between them and the Kanto Dexholders mainly because Gen 7 was when we get to see the most alien-ish pokemon ever.

Now, before I select the first 10 aliens for his playlist, there are some rules I’m gonna have to state for all of the dexholders:

No OP aliens at the start for their first playlist (Way Big, Clockwork, Alien X, etc) unless some circumstances are there or they have some kind of niche.

Only aliens that Ben has canonically transformed in the original and reboot on-screen in the shows (just so I can have more options and be more accurate)

No 5 Years Later transformations (Also, I’m not counting Eon from Race Against Time)

When it comes to the Andromeda V, I will count them but substitutes will be made if possible.

Also, how I’m going to select the aliens based on their attributes, Pokémon teams and dexholder titles (or just a mishmash of all 3)

With that out of the way, let’s begin!

Starting with the boy from Kanto: Sun!

Now, Sun is clearly shown to be working mainly as a delivery boy. So that he could earn enough money to get his great grandfather’s island back. But that has switched to building the Poké Pelago instead. However, since his main job is working as a delivery boy, his first playlist should consist of aliens that could help in his delivery job. Therefore, the first alien I decide to give him is: XLR8 Fasttrack

The reason why I decided on Fasttrack is because he’s fast so he would be able to deliver packages more on time, and he would probably be able to run on water to deliver said packages

…

I know, I know. You’re all probably thinking: Why not XLR8? He’s faster than Fasttrack and more popular! Now let me explain why:

Fasttrack appears to be one of the more feline-based aliens, and since Sun has 2 cat Pokémon, I feel that it’s fitting.

Fasttrack is confirmed to be stronger than XLR8 so he could probably lift heavier parcels with ease.

XLR8 has claws which I feel that he would have some difficulty holding on to the packages. Fasttrack on the other hand does not have said drawback due to having more humanoid hands.

Now, with Fasttrack taking care of the land and sea (maybe), I think it’s best if I were to have an alien that can soar through the sky, I choose Jetray.

The main reason is because Sun would probably need to fly to get some packages across the globe (or just to save time). Plus, Jetray is confirmed to be able to, and I quote:

“Jetray is Ben’s fastest flier; he can fly at speeds several times the speed of sound.”

and

“Jetray is also fast enough to create sonic booms and enter hyperspace.”

Of course, Sun probably wouldn’t go this fast or else he’ll damage the packages, but he’ll probably work things out.

Next, another alien which would help Sun out in his deliveries is no doubt: Four Arms

Four Arms is only added purely because he has extra arms which would help out in carrying more packages. That’s it really. However, you could argue that Four Arms also loosely represents Sun’s dexholder title as the ‘Saver’, because of that one episode where Kevin bought a car made of pure taydenite, which is basically made out of money.

Speaking of money, considering that Sun now has Kiawe and two other employees at the end of the Sun and Moon arc,

He would probably have an alien which allows him to carry multiple packages, and what better alien than the splitting Splixson: Ditto

Now, considering that Ditto is able to split up into multiple copies, he’s able to deliver multiple packages at once which is very convenient for Sun.

Now, with all that said, we’ve got 4 aliens that helps with Sun’s job being a delivery boy. But what else is there? Well…Sun does get injured, like a lot. So, what better way to represent that with an alien that has extreme durability? Well, for Sun’s fourth alien, it’s The Worst.

Yup. The wobbuffet of Ben 10.

Now, why is he here? Well, atrocians (The Worst’s species) have confirmed to be nearly impervious to physical harm; he is able to withstand heavy physical attacks, and energy attacks. Which, definitely could’ve came in useful from the various times Sun was injured. Although, he would still feel pain.

Speaking of Sun being injured, what’s better than taking hits and not getting injured? Well, how about regeneration to top it off? Well, there’s only some aliens that has regeneration, but I feel one would suit Sun the most, that being: Lodestar

When going through the aliens that have regeneration, I feel that Lodestar suits Sun the best. With his magnetic abilities, he would be able to probably oppose the Aether Foundation by attracting anything that’s magnetic and throw it at them. He probably hates the Aether Foundation (specifically Faba) for taking his great grandfather’s island (at least, I think he hates it). So, he would probably use Lodestar to go on a revenge attack against the foundation. If not for Moon stopping him (hopefully).

Also, with Solgaleo being said as the embodiment of the Sun, but for some reason being steel type (I actually know why but I feel that it’s a bit long to explain). And since Lodestar is magnetic, it can attract steel.

Now, Lodestar is probably the one stretched the most when it comes to the aliens I chose, but this one makes more sense. Now, we know that Sun hates Faba with a burning passion. And some of us do. So what better alien to convey Sun’s rage against Faba and to represent his starter: Rath

So, that’s the reason. Also, I really want to see how I would write as Rath, and it was a lot of fun. I actually don’t know if Sun does hate Faba but it seems like he does, you can correct me later on, however, Rath still works because like I said, I am going to be influenced by their teams and Sun has an Incinerorar so it works. Plus, I could imagine the scene where when Faba reveals that all of Sun’s efforts were useless, Sun would just transform into Rath and yell out something like: “LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING FABA FROM THE AETHER FOUNDATION, RATH DOES NOT LIKE YOU WENT BACK IN YOUR DEAL, AND THAT MAKES RATH MAD!!!!!!”

Now, for Sun’s next alien, I was having a bit of a dilemma as of who to choose, but like I said, I’m going to be counting one of the mons on Sun’s team. In this case, Drachma. His Stakataka if you’re confused. Since Stakataka appears to be made out of sentient bricks, what better alien to represent that than: Bloxx. Who’s just sentient Lego.

Plus, Bloxx can shapeshift, so he could help in the delivery area.

Next, for his second-to last alien, again, I was stuck on who to choose. After a while, I decided on the Amperi: Amphibian

Now, why Amphibian? Well, according to the wiki, Amphibian is described as ‘a blue jellyfish-like alien’. And at one point, both Sun and Moon were stranded for 6 months in Ultra Deep Sea. And do you which Ultra Beast is found in there? Well, you guessed it, it’s the Nihilego.

Which are basically jellyfish-like pokemon. So, I suppose it works. Also, it loosely represents that both species can damage the nervous system, with Nihilego’s neurotoxins and Ultimate Aggregor shocking Grandpa Max so much that it damaged his nervous system. Loose, but it’s there.

Finally, for his last alien, I had the hardest time thinking of who to choose. At first I thought of Portaler since he has portal generation which does reference Ultra Wormholes, but he’s non-canon and even if he is, he would probably be too OP for the first playlist. Evidenced by 5YL putting him in the Powerhouse Playlist (the link for that version of Portaler is here).

I thought of it for a while, before eventually settling on the Galilean: Gravattack

With Gravattack being able to control gravity and that he’s a living planet, it makes sense that considering how otherworldly Ultra Beasts are, it’s as if they’re from another planet. Plus, in a hypothetical scenario, in the final fight against Ultra Necrozma, he would reveal that he has a 10th alien to his allies (they probably knew that Sun has the Omnitrix by this time) as most of them only thought he had 9. That would be a pretty badass fight I would like to see.

Flying

Return from the Veil Snippet.  

Harry’s enjoying visiting the Tonks’ house with Sirius, which includes flying for Harry.  This prompts Sirius to confess he was present for the tasks to see his flying.

Harry loved living at the cottage.  It felt warm and loving and just…like home.  He loved that he finally felt like he had home. It helped, of course, that he had someone who wanted to be around him, who cared about what he did, and who genuinely seemed to love him.  After they talked about life at the Dursleys and everything they’d been through, he felt that much more at ease with Sirius.  He knows that he can tell him and talk to him about anything and it’s a good feeling.  He couldn’t be happier than he is this summer.

He typically woke up earlier than Sirius, and cooked breakfast.  He didn’t mind cooking breakfast for the two of them the way that he didn’t enjoy it when he cooked for the Dursley’s all those years ago.  

         After breakfast, they went to the Tonkes, for some training for Harry while Sirius worked with Remus and Andromeda on the bullet holes plan.  It was early afternoon when Tonks and Harry went flying.

     Harry was currently flying around the yard with Tonks, who’s not nearly as skilled on a broom.  Although that didn’t matter.  To Harry, all that mattered was that he was in the air, flying again, after a year of being banned, it was amazing to be on his firebolt again.  Especially when Sirius let the practice snitch go, and he caught it within a minute.  He let it go and caught it again, repeatedly.  Tonks tried to beat him to it, but he was just too good.

         “Well, it’s a good thing you’ll be captain,” Sirius states as he lands.

         Harry laughs, “Well, I’m surprised it’s not Katie since we’ve been on the team for the same amount of time, and she’s technically older…and you know…wasn’t given a lifetime ban.”

         “You know it wasn’t actually legal what Umbridge did, right?  She can ban you from playing for the house team, but if you wanted to play professionally it was never going to stick, and stealing your firebolt…”

         “Like the ministry would care that she was doing illegal things.”

         Sirius frowns, since he knows about Umbridge’s attacks on Harry (having seen the scars and attempting to heal them to no avail), but he just throws an arm about Harry’s shoulder, and ignores the mention of her.  “Well, regardless, you’re an amazing flier.  Well, I knew that …I watched you your third year, and even fourth year against the dragon…but seriously, you were doing circles around Tonks, you caught the snitch a dozen times in an hour…you definitely deserve captain.”

         “Thanks for the vote of confidence…” Harry starts.  “Wait, you watched me at the first task?”

         “Of course I did.  I was already back in the country and living in that cave…I wasn’t going to wait for a letter…that’s too late to do anything, so I …snuck on the grounds and watched as Padfoot,” Sirius states.

         Harry smiles, “I wish I had known that.  Just knowing that I had more than Hermione in the stands…would have…made a lot of difference.”

         “I should’ve told you…I just…you were dealing with enough, that’s why I didn’t see you on the trips into Hogsmeade…until March.”

         Harry nods.  “It’s nice to reflect on it, now.”

         “Just another reason you’re a wonderful godfather, Padfoot,” Remus states.

         “Yeah…not everyone thinks that way…” Sirius trails off, and Harry knows he’s talking about the order and Mrs. Weasley.  Well, Harry didn’t care what anyone else thought, Sirius was a wonderfully amazing godfather.  The only adult that had ever truly been there for him.  The only adult Harry truly trusted from the beginning, and he wasn’t going to let the order’s or the Weasley parents’ opinions cause Sirius to doubt himself.

         “I do,” Harry says.  “And as your godson, I’m the only one that matters.”

         Sirius smiles, obviously happy that Harry thought so much of him.  

         “He’s right, Padfoot.  Only one hell of a godfather does what you did that year,” Remus states.  “And I have to apologize, Harry, I should have been there for you as well.”

         Harry nods, stiffly.  He’s trying to forgive and trust Remus, but it’s hard.  “It’s nice for you to apologize, but uh, well, it’s a little…pointless now.”  Although it helped.  After talking to Sirius and realizing his issues, Harry knew that he needed the acknowledgment that it wasn’t okay.

         Remus nods, “Well, since Sirius will be with you this year, I could write you instead…”

         “Me too!  Me too!” Tonks insists as she runs back from putting her broom in the shed.  She links her left arm with Harry’s right.  “I can be the big sister you never wanted.”

         Harry snorts, “How about you could be the big sister I always wanted?”

         She smirks, and her hair flashes a few different colors, “Even better!”

         Harry smiles, “And I would like that, Remus.  Hedwig might actually like me again if I start writing more. Sometimes, I think she gets affronted by my lack of using her.”

         “I agree.  Although we wouldn’t be able to share sensitive information… unless we encoded them like we were joking about the other night,” Harry offers.  

         “Or we can always use the mirrors that Prongslet forgot about…” Sirius says, trailing off, reminding Harry about the mess that could have been avoided had he known about the mirrors.  Harry frowns, upset at the reminder and a bit upset that he’s giving his mirror to Remus, but he could understand that it doesn’t make sense for Sirius to keep his when he’ll be at Harry’s side for the foreseeable future.

         “It wasn’t my fault!  You weren’t very clear, and I was worried that you’d so something reckless like barge into the castle and get yourself arrested or killed…I couldn’t lose you, so I… no matter how badly I wanted to talk to you…I just…didn’t …” Harry says, suddenly upset.  

         “Oh, kid, look at me,” Sirius says.  Stopping them in their tracks and looking directly Harry.  Harry looks up at him.  “I’m sorry that I made you think I would’ve done something stupid…and I’m sorry that you thought – that in a way – you lost me.  But I’m here now, and I’m not going anywhere, okay?”

         Harry nods.  Even after weeks of having Sirius by his side, he still dreamt of losing him, still worried he’d wake up one day and Sirius would be gone, still worried that somehow this was a dream.  Sirius often had to remind him that no matter what happened in the past, he would never leave him, again, but his fears were real.  He couldn’t shake those thoughts; those worries and he’s trying so hard to move on.

         “I want to hear you say it.”

         “I know you’re not going to leave me,” Harry says, automatically.  It was something he ended up saying nearly every day, at Sirius’ instance whenever he begins worrying again.  

         “Good.”  Sirius gives him a hug, and as odd as it is, Remus and Tonks join in.  

         Somehow, somehow, he knew it was true.  Despite his fears, Sirius wasn’t going anywhere, at least not without a fight.

they return to their book- a thick, leather bound tome of dark magic and spells- all written in andromeda’s own flowing script- the quiet of the early evening, and the warmth from the lingering summer, turns the world into something . . . almost magical. 

andromeda leans over, and kisses the tip of anya’s nose- more than content to enjoy this uninterrupted peacefulness for as long as they dare.

NYG1–AAT update/writing ranting

So I have this dilemma—not writer’s block necessarily but more too many ideas  floating around in my brain on any given day.

I have this scene.... that probably is unnecessary. And if you read writing advice out there it’s always to remove stuff that’s unnecessary to the story. It’s self indulgent. A small little tidbit that I feel adds to the Scott/Reyes dynamic but isn’t absolutely necessary to the plot or relationship. I’ve been really slow at updating AAT because when I’ve been working on it i’ve been working on the ending parts/third act instead of the next chapter. 

But I like adding these bits?  So for now it’s staying.... I might edit it out later. 

So here’s a bit of self indulgent writing:

From An Andromeda Tale, ch 57: Reyes POV. MReyder. Mass Effect Andromeda

Warnings for first draft. Scott still hates butterscotch flavoring. 

The noise and recoil of the machine was a whoosh thunk that seemed to reverberate in Reyes’ skull it was so loud and the stone under his feet vibrate as the gun spun up to full force and velocity. Scott finally pulled his arm back and it wasn’t a moment to soon, the biotic shield he’d been maintaining flickering in warning before failing and the blue light that had illuminated the area around both of them winking out. The ashen look to Scott’s skin form the glow of the molten rock around them was concerning as he slumped boneless behind the console, eyes falling shut but his chest visibly rising and falling to tell Reyes he still lived. 

In the chaotic cacophony of the turret taking out the tank Reyes managed to duck and weave his way back to Scott’s side, ignoring the explosion as the tank died that showered the area with shrapnel that miraculously didn’t hit him. “Scott?” He called his name as he crouched over him, protectively shielding Scott’s body with his own. 

No response. “Scott?” He asked, urgency and worry leaking into his voice. “Scott?” He repeated as his gloved hands cradled his face, thumb rubbing a smear of dirt across the cheek. 

Scott grunted in pain, his eyes open to mere azure slivers that seemed to glow in the dim light. “Scott?” Reyes called again, a question that he wasn’t sure of in his voice. 

“Pulled a bit too much at once,” Scott’s voice sounded rough. “Need a moment.  I’ll be good in a minute or two.”

Crouching protectively over Scott, Reyes took a shot at one of the robot fliers that dared to peek around a corner. In between shots, Reyes checked over Scott.  No obvious bullet holes or areas he was bleeding from. 

“Mr Vidal,” SAM spoke through his comm. “The pathfinder is correct—he just needs a moment.  If you would retrieve one of the protein bars it would be beneficial.”

“What?” Reyes asked even as he pulled a bar from his own pocket and tore the wrapper. 

“Low blood sugar from sustained biotic usage is a known hazard,” SAM instructed him. 

The wry smile that Scott gave him was tired but he didn’t drop the protein bar when Reyes offered it to him. “Butterscotch,” Scott grumbled as he chewed.  

“I take it that’s not your favorite flavor?” Reyes asked, squeezing off another shot. He could now hear Cora and Vetra making their way towards them.  There hadn’t been an appearance of any more of the tank-like robots. 

“Chocolate,” Scott admitted as he finished the bar, voice stronger already and eyes brighter. His breathing was easier too—Reyes noted.

“You have a sweet tooth?” He teased.

Scott rolled his eyes. “Who doesn’t like chocolate?”

Reyes found himself returning the smile, reassured that Scott was looking better. “Most I would assume.”

“Ah—be careful about assuming. You know what they say?” Scott got back up on his feet.

welcome to spontaneous tuc side character appreciation

since it’s tuc’s anniversary extravaganza I’d thought I’d share the list I made on my latest reread. this time we’re talking about andromeda because she’s known for the first three books and then drops off the face of existence. so here’s everything she’s done ever!

(disclaimer I’m not infallible so apologies if I missed anything. I cut out a few times where the bats were mentioned as a unit. enjoy!)

Chapter 8 - Andromeda is part of the battle on the beach, though she's not mentioned by name. Shed holds onto her wing until Perdita saves her. She sprays blood from her wounded wing and loses control. She’s caught by Shed’s feet and slams into the wall. She shakily carries gregor.

Chapter 9 - Mareth helps carry her to the hospital despite being injured. From then on, Mareth has to ride a different bat on the quest while Andromeda recovers.

Chapter 10 - Mareth introduces her to Gregor and she seems to have forgiven him and is honored to meet him. She is a chosen member for the quest.

Chapter 11 - She and Pandora huddle together without Ares. She sleeps near Mareth.

Chapter 12 - She helps tear apart the squid with her claws. She ends up with a couple of sucker marks along with Twitchtip.

Chapter 14 - She pulls the front of the boat with Aurora.

Chapter 15 - She stands guard while Mareth steers. She likes the taste of bluebits.

Chapter 16 - She drags the boat through the water. She no longer shuns Ares and all three bats huddle together. Gregor suspects it might be because she knows Aurora would choose Ares over her. They all sleep fitfully.

Chapter 17 - She lifts the front of the boat and catches Mareth and Howard. At some point Mareth is bitten and they dive for Twitchtip to sever her tail from a serpent. 

Chapter 18 - She hangs over Howard while he treats Mareth, folds her wings around him to warm him, and repeats “I must take him home” twice. 

Chapter 19 - She ruffles her wings when Gregor is revealed as a rager. She doesn’t want to injure Gregor and tells Howard they both need to get Mareth to Regalia. She says she could make the journey with a raft light enough to carry. Mareth is layed on her back with a blanket and she and Howard take off.

Chapter 25 - She is bound and ragged. She already thinks she’s guilty. Gregor says she knew he’d fight her if she didn’t leave. She shakes her wings at his testimony.

Chapter 26 - She dines with the others. It’s revealed she and Howard weren’t allowed medical care. She was “astonishing” and made the trek in 12 hours. She huddles with Ares between Gregor and Howard.

Chapter 27 - She sees Gregor off.

Chapter 7 - She’s in quarantine with Howard, playing chess. She looks healthy. She hurries to the glass, says something to Howard, and is ordered back to bed. Mareth says he doesn’t need a leg when he has her, but looks upset when he remembers she has the plague.

Chapter 10 - It’s revealed she and Howard carried Ares from his cave to the hospital, so she is STACKED.

Chapter 26 - She’s asleep in bed and has the purple bumps, but is being given the plague cure.

then as far as i know she disappears from time and space or something (joke) because she's never mentioned again. i guess she's still recovering from the plague and is probably with mareth in books 4-5, but either gregor never mentions her or she's just not there. either way she's a fun addition to the team and i'm glad she decided to give ares a chance. her bond with mareth is cool and he is my favorite character so any friend of his is a friend of mine, so to speak. like most of the other bats, she doesn't say much, but I'd say she seems sensible and protective. hope you learned something in my andromeda exposé :)

Anyway. Here’s the definitive power ranking of all minor characters* in the Underland Chronicles. It's quite long, because I tried to use every character.

Icarus -this DUUUUDE. This GUYYYYY. SUCKS! -“uh-oh looks like I’m infected with the plague better fly directly into a social gathering” -would be an anti-masker probably  0/10

Reekwell and Gushgore -Fangor and Shed part two, but unfunny this time. 1/10 y’all suck give me Fangor and Shed back

Purvox -Purvox is apparently a beautiful red spider who teaches Hazard how to “speak” Spinner. That’s cool. -that’s it. Why did Suzanne even feel the need to name her? I’m grateful for the extra details but 2/10

Ajax -mean. -nobody likes him -this is probably why he gets on so well with Solovet -some sort of flier general, it seems, which is pretty cool 2/10

Hero & Kent -twins, I guess that’s fun -they’re only like eight but they still Smirk Evilly. Good for them 2/10 just because there’s 2 of them

Anchel & Daphne -some randos Keeda mentions as dead. They probably had some sort of significance to be mentioned by name but We’ll Never Know. 2/10 RIP though. I’m sure you’re worth higher than this but I don’t even know who you are

Horatio -crony #1 -has a crush on Dulcet. Didn’t we all 3.5/10. Boosted solely by association with Dulcet

Marcus -crony #2 3/10

Wevox -thought her name was Weavox until I began writing this post -sort of “Was Margaret Thatcher a Girlboss?” vibes -“As it is, Vikus, we will not drink. Web them” is a RAW line and it bounces around my head sometimes -the spiders are clearly very crafty about their political relations but she was not going to hesitate for a MOMENT to consider the ramifications of killing the monarch of Regalia and we gotta respect that -docking points for the girlboss thing, though. 4/10

Stellovet -queen of insults you gotta be honest -had an INCREDIBLE amount of impact for only having like three lines. I remember being like 11 and reading so many fics on Fan Fiction Dot Net where she was a scheming villain -funny how Luxa thinks her endgame is just becoming a princess. She doesn’t care beyond that she just wants to be royalty 4/10

Chim -baby -ok she’s 5 -doesn’t do anything but look confused and help provide a gateway for Howard to look like a good person 5/10, for years of life. What’s even your name? Chimney?

Andromeda -she’s good. She is an Absolute Beast when she crosses the Waterway with Howard and Mareth, definitely saved Mareth’s life -loves Mareth very much :) -shuns Ares at first but comes around, we still gotta knock her for this though 5/10

Clawsin & Bloodlet & Ratriff -Some folks who go to Ripred’s side, Clawsin gets blinded from the Bane, Ratriff gets his arm ripped off by the Bane, it is what it is 5/10 collectively

Reflex -man’s got jokes -very helpful with the code -shoots streamers of silk around the room when they break it -came to Regalia secretly... secretly to whom? The spinners? The gnawers? Whatever, he’s a rebel either way -I had to look up his name though, so apparently not a lot of impact. Sorry Reflex 5/10

Treflex -announced he was joining the quest, then IMMEDIATELY died. Yes king give us nothing -made a good snack? Gross. 5/10

Cevian -the scene where they find her body is beautifully written and so heartbreaking. She’s the catalyst for the entire fourth book -gives Aurora the opportunity to make her first ever big impassioned speech. It’s what Aurora deserved -still, she doesn’t get any dialogue so I can’t vote her super high 5/10

Euripides -seems nice -always described as “Vikus’ big grey bat,” never just big bat, never just grey bat -tells Luxa to teach Gregor how to ride a bat because his neck is getting bruised lol -nice of him not to embarrass Gregor though 6/10 speak up for yourself, king

Pend -takes Boots back to Regalia after the moth brings her to the crawlers’ land -Vikus recognizes him by name which is really impressive since crawlers look pretty homogenous, although we are told Vikus is better than most at picking them out. Still, Pend is probably a high rolling crawler. 6/10

The scorpions -I know I’m supposed to be doing named characters but they’re pretty cool. The passage they’re in is a really fun read. Mad respect 6/10 I’ll see y’all in Scorpio szn, baby

Razor -showed SHAME and GUILT in the first book when he got called out by Ripred -raised Pearlpelt as if he was his own. In payment, Pearlpelt knocked him off a cliff and then tried to eat him to hide the evidence 6/10

Fangor and Shed -funny dudes. -apparently constantly drunk 6/10

Gox -Gox got shit DONE, okay? Gox got shit DONE. -would eat your carcass without a moment of hesitation. It’s fine. 6/10

Hermes -this guy is great! -brings Luxa her crown -gets seriously injured while protecting Lizzie on their way to Regalia -might be dead tbh no one ever says 7/10

Keeda -okay listen. Keeda’s great. Keeda is that warrior at the Battle of Marathon who ran all the way back to Athens to report their victory and immediately die, except Keeda was reporting that the gnawers were about to invade -listen I know she was dealing with some other stuff, but Vikus asks, “how many rats?” And she says “many. Many rats” ??? No estimate? “An army?” Whatever. We give her a pass. 7/10 RIP

Pandora -FUCK -her death was possibly the MOST disturbing passage I’ve ever read. I could see it so, so vividly in my head. Man I remember the horror -she just wanted to explore 7/10 but also 2/10 for emotional trauma

Queen Athena -ICONIC one-liner in Curse of the Warmbloods, absolutely demolishes the gnawers over their treatment of the nibblers -I’m really biased towards her because Athena is my favorite goddess -probably could’ve done more for Ares, especially as seeing she’s supposed to be perceptive and a really good judge of character and whatnot 7/10

Daedalus -flinches in fear when Boots says she’s gonna sing a for him, specifically -basically pledges his life to Lizzie in the event the Code Room is attacked so that’s very nice 7/10

Heronian -she’s in a full body cast, but that will not stop her. 8/10

Susannah -can we talk about how she lost both of her siblings and she just keeps trucking along? -REALLY wish we knew more about her -clearly Very Kind. Can you please ask your daughter to be nicer -takes really good care of everyone she comes across :) 8/10

Min -creaky old cockroach dance 9/10

Frill -was cool -taught everyone the marks of secret -taught Hamnet about pacifism and stuff too -I get the feeling she was wayyyyy more important to Hazard and Hamnet and their survival than Gregor’s narrative really dives into 9/10

Mr. Cormaci -nice man. Gave Gregor quarters. 10/10

Gregor’s grandma -cool lady, you can’t deny! -tells Gregor he can’t outrun his issues -has a super cool quilt -who IS Simon??? 10/10

Scalene, Euclidian, Root, Cube, and Newton -felt obligated to include all these kiddos because they are, in fact, named, even though none of them get any dialogue or anything else for that matter, really -Scalene was a little nibbler pup that found her mom in the Arena, Euclidian and Root are two more that the mom was looking for, Newton was one that no one claimed but some other guy was like “any of us will take him” which is :’) but also, so, so sad. -Cube was the pup Luxa named that ended up in the pit in the Firelands -Scalene and Newton survived a genocide and Euclidian which is baller any way you swing it 10/10

Chapter Nine: Quidditch Is What Brings Us Together Today

The Hogwarts Express seems different this time. It's where Scorpius and I say hello on September 1st and goodbye at the end of the school year. I guess this time’s just different because he lived with me for a month during the summer before his dad was deemed fit to live at home again. So there's that. But there's also the familiarity with going to Hogwarts on September 1st on the train that calms my nerves.

I haven't seen him in 3 weeks. Will he have dyed his hair like he did second year? Will he have cut his hair short? I inhale and exhale. Checking the time on my wristwatch I'm surprised when it clicks over to 10:57. Where's Scorpius? He's usually here by now. I look all around the platform, but I don't see any sign of his or his father's unique white-blond hair. I start to panic when the clock ticks to 10:58. Everyone still on the platform is wishing their child goodbye as they usher them onto the train.

Where is he?

I sigh in relief when he comes barreling through the brick wall and onto the station, pushing a trolley with his luggage and Andromeda. He slips past people, rolling his cart faster and faster to get across the platform.

He makes it on with a minute to spare.

I pet Gingersnap in between her ears while waiting for Scorpius to get to the compartment. “You’re so cute, aren’t you?” I press the pad of my finger to Gi’s nose.

The door opens, startling me.

“Hey,” says Scorpius, waving at me awkwardly.

“Hey! How was the rest of your summer?”

He shrugs. “It was alright. We did pretty normal things, like going to the opera.” He sets Andromeda’s cage down on the seat and unlatches it, letting her fly free around the compartment. She hops out, surveys her surroundings, then flies up to the luggage racks above our heads. She preens her wings, then lets her head rest in between her shoulders. Her body rocks slightly with every movement of the train.

I scoff. “I can’t believe she just settles right in like that.”

“Yeah,” he looks up at her. “It is pretty unbelievable.” He looks back at me and takes a seat on the red cushioned booth. “Anyway, how was your summer? Did you play any more quidditch with your family?”

I smile. “Yes, actually. We went over to Gramma and Grandpa Weasley’s house and we saw everyone right before school, so we had time to play a bunch of quidditch instead of doing any studying.”

“Wow.” He raises his eyebrow and teasingly says “You’re getting to be so rebellious. How dare you not like studying all the time?”

I laugh. “You actually gonna try out this year? I know you have rebellious tendencies of your own.”

Scorpius smirks. “Yep. Seeker. Will I see you there?”

I try to remain as nonchalant as possible. “Maybe,” I shrug.

....

“Join the Quidditch team!” Riley Aberforth, the new Ravenclaw Quidditch captain, stands in the common room, a pile of flyers in zir hands. “Plenty of openings!” One of last years’ beaters walks by, and ze throws a flyer at him and hexes it to stick to his clothes.

I feel a little bad- almost all of our old players graduated last year, and it’s hard to find people willing to juggle Quidditch and studies. “C’mon, Riley, now I’ll never get it off,” The beater complains, trying and failing to pull it off of his robe sleeve.

“That’s the idea,” Ze replies savagely, and he sighs.

“Hey-” Scorpius walks up to zir, scratching the back of his neck. “I was wondering when seeker sign-ups were?”

Aberforth looks immensely relieved. “Two weeks from now,” Ze said, passing a flier to him. “Don’t miss it.”

“Don’t worry, I won’t,” Scorpius says and throws a wink over his shoulder at me.

‘Shut up,’ I mouth at him, and he chuckles as he disappears into the boy’s dormitories.

I watch as Aberforth sticks a flier to the wall with a permanent sticking charm.

Maybe there'll be an easy chaser spot, I think.

…

I exhale and grip the handle of my broom tighter. Now that I’m here, everything seems exaggerated. I look to the stands at Scorpius. He waves, and I smile awkwardly, waving back. I’m really doing this.

Scorpius had been talking about trying out for seeker since he came over for the summer, but I only decided to try out for the chaser position three days before tryouts. It left me with a bit of a time crunch but, well, too late to worry about that now.

“And… start!” Aberforth throws the quaffle straight up into the air. One of the other chasers gets to it first- she dives and twists up in a move that I, luckily, recognize from years of playing with Albus and his sneaky tricks. I get the ball from her easily, and in a whirl of movement, I’ve already scored.

Aberforth blows zir whistle and looks impressed. “Good job, Weasley!”

I blush, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. “It’s nothing, really,” I try to avoid, and ze smirks.

“Precisely,” Ze says, and throws the quaffle in the air once more.

...

It’s my turn.

There are a few assembled people- a blonde girl with bright eyes, a boy with comically oversized glasses- but most notably is Lorcan Scamander, looking completely out of place and practically swimming in his borrowed gear.

“Lorcan?” I ask, bewildered. “What’re you doing here?”

He jumps, then puffs out his chest, glaring. “I have every right to be here as you do,” He says defensively.

“Right, of course,” I say, “It’s just you don’t really seem… the type.” He manages to look even more outraged. “I can fly!”

“Right,” I say.

He finally deflates a little. “I mean, I heard Rosie was trying out, so I figured… why not?”

I blink.

He crosses his arms.

I blink again.

“Right,” I repeat.

He huffs and opens his mouth, clearly readying to lecture me, but luckily, Aberforth blows on zir whistle, and he closes his mouth.

“Alright, everyone know the rules?” Ze calls, and there’s no way ze isn’t using a sonorous charm. Even zir lungs aren’t that big.

Most people nod, but I frown. “No,” I say.

Ze sighs sharply. “Basically, I’m going to release the snitch.” Ze opens zir hand to reveal the snitch, wings fluttering against zir palm. “When someone catches it, my wand will flash- like so.” Ze lets it go, only to catch it out of the air immediately. Zir wand flashes a bright blue light twice. “When you catch it, release it immediately.”

“Okay,” I say.

“Whoever catches it the most times wins,” Ze finishes. “Three… two… one… go!” Ze lets it go, and immediately it takes off, zipping up into the sky and blending into the cloud coverage in the span of a blink.

Everyone scrambles to their brooms, Lorcan nearly falling off, and the game begins.

...

An hour of rigorous gameplay and half an hour of random, unannounced bludger attacks later, the game is over.

The blonde girl comes first with 13 catches.

I come at a close second with 8.

The boy with the glasses is third with 5.

Two angry-looking boys yell at each other in what sounds like French with a tie of 3.

Lorcan catches a grand total of 1.

Disappointed, I go to leave, but Aberforth quickly catches up, grabbing onto the edge of my sleeve. “Hey, Malfoy, wait up.”

I stop and turn to zir. “What?”

“Listen, I know what I said, but I think you have potential,” Ze explains. “Would you like to take a Chaser position alongside Weasley?” When my eyes widen, ze smirks. “Don’t tell her yet, postings aren’t up until after keeper tryouts.”

“Yes, of course,” I exclaim. “Thank you so much!”

“Our secret,” Ze says with a wink, and then ze is gone, jogging back to meet with the winner

When I meet up with Rose, she looks sympathetic. “I’m sorry you didn’t get seeker,” She says.

“Eh,” I say with a shrug and a broad smile. “I think everything’s gonna work out.”

...

Rose zooms across the other side of the field as we both head for the goals. I manage to get near the keeper from Gryffindor who’s tall and burly and looks like he could be better suited as a beater with his large shoulders.

Rose passes the quaffle to me, and I throw it into the hoop.

“It’s only their fourth game of the season and they’re already tearing up the scoreboards-That’s another ten points to Ravenclaw!”

I feel a sense of pride when I look over at Rose. We’re doing it.  

We’re becoming awesome players. Not being able to play with Rose and her family was annoying, but now I actually get to play with her and some of her siblings are on the opposite team.

“It looks like Potter is diving towards something- has he spotted the golden snitch?” Jordan's voice booms across the fields. “Hare is going after it too and it looks like it’s gonna be a close call! Oh, and she pulls up right before hitting the ground-and Potter is down!”

I look down to where he’s crash-landed on the wet grass. He gets up on his broom and flies back up to where we are.

Good move, Hare.

The burly keeper throws the quaffle back into the game, and Rose and I set into motion, me going for the ball and her towards the goal. Finnigan from Gryffindor flies up and sends a bludger right for Rose. I can only see it hurtling towards her before shouting a warning.

“Watch out Rose!”

She ducks, but it still manages to hit her elbow, knocking her even more off balance. “Thanks!” She calls to me. She still has the quaffle held in her good hand. She flips herself right side on her broom and passes it to Aberforth, who scores the goal easily.

The game goes on and on, but it doesn’t drag by at all. The adrenaline keeps me watching every move my team makes and I follow the quaffle with my eyes and broom.

Bordeaux scores a point.

“That’s another 10 points to Ravenclaw, making  it 190-160 Ravenclaw,” says Jordan. “This is a close call for Gryffindor, who has won all of their games for the last 2 years.”

I pass the quaffle to Rose.

“And the game’s over! The Ravenclaw seeker has caught the snitch, ending Gryffindor’s streak. Good job, Alaska Hare and the rest of the Ravenclaw team!”

...

“Good job team!” Aberforth calls from the top of people. Ze’re crowd surfing. The crowd whoops.

“Ravenclaw! Ravenclaw! Ravenclaw!” They chant, and I join in. Adrenaline still rushes through my veins.

Scorpius makes his way over to me, two butterbeers in his hands.”Do you want one?”

I take it. “Thanks.”

“No prob.” He rests his back against the wall, taking a sip of his drink. “They’ve also got some roast beef sandwiches from the kitchens if you want one.”

“Sure. Where?” I look over to him. He has a moustache of foam on his upper lip. I giggle. “You might wanna wipe that off.” I point at it.

He blushes and wipes it off with his sleeve. “Better?”

“Yep. It’s all gone now.”

He sticks his free hand in his jeans pocket. “So, sandwiches?”

I follow him to the corner of the commons room, where people are munching on the food offered at the table. I grab a sandwich, and Scorpius grabs the same, plus an apple.

“Let’s go sit down.” I motion towards the seats. Most of them are occupied, but there’s half of a couch still open. I set my plate and drink on the table, and settle into the soft couch. Scorpius does the same.

“Is it bad that I wish there weren’t as many people celebrating in the commons?” He takes a bite of his apple.

I shrug. “I don’t think so?” We barely see almost the entire house in one place besides the great hall for meals. “It’s weird to have everyone in here.” Especially partying. Everyone either has a drink or food in their hands and are chatting. Though there is one person I can’t seem to find. “Where’s Hare?” I ask.

“Probably enjoying the peace of the library.” He sighs wistfully.

Haven Radiance

( Haven / Raid / Radiance )

Successor to the princess of friendship and daughter of a noble scholar, Haven is a knowledgeable young mare with a big heart. She may be quiet and reserved but shes very smart and doesn’t mind just saying what she thinks. Her talent is compromise, or more specifically... speaking peace with others. She’s basically the best ambassador in equestria. She also is one of the best fliers in the Wonderbolts Night-Division.

Haven doesn’t really like going to political meetings, even if thats her talent. She hates the pressure of it, the importance of one decision. But thats not the only reason she doesn’t like going. Its slightly because of Princess Asteria, daughter of Luna and successor to the throne and lead court mare of night.

Haven has a good relationship with her parents, and her brother. Her batpony-ness makes her proud, and her parentage even more.

- she doesn’t mind being in her mother’s shadow, it gives her less to stand out about.

- haven is an introvert.

- she is sorta in a relationship with Dawnovan.

- haven doesn’t really accept the fact she’s related to Asteria (unlike her brother).

-her best friend is Splendor Rain.

Asteria

( Aster )

Proud, prim, and definitely spoiled beyond reason. Asteria knows that, but she doesn’t really care. All she cares about is her family, her mother, her cousins, and even if she denies it.. her half siblings. As a foal, Aster was showered with gifts by her mother. Luna was determined to give her daughter the attention she never truly got as a filly, and as a result. Asteria and Luna were as close as could be.

Asteria was smart, and never let the power and spoiled-ness get to her head, or at least tried. When she found out about her father, and how he abandoned them for another.. she was heart broken. And even worse... he became the husband to Twilight Sparkle. Asteria’s own mentor in magic.

Past her daddy issues and such, Asteria is a pretty caring mare. Sure shes very pessimistic and judgemental but she does care. Her special talent, is... of course, raising the moon. But also creating art in the night sky. She does it so often that Luna had to rearrange the stars carefully so that her daughter wouldn’t change the course of the sky for sailors and Pegasi.

- Asteria does not get along with Haven, even if she wanted to. While she tolerates her (half) brother she cannot stand Haven.

>the two have a bitter rivalry, but if they did get along the nobles believe they’d be unstoppable when it comes to tactics and battle and rulling equestria itself.

- sometimes Asteria and Haven argue during meetings and Andromeda combines their ideas which makes ponies often believe that she’s smarter than them but in actuality she’s terrible at politics.

Overview Post: Astraeakind

The quick and dirty and non-in-universe explanation: this is the kind of alien that Lux is, that Cepheid is, that the Anthesphoria gang are. They come from the SC universe’s version of Andromeda, they’re basically tiny little stars with bodies around them. But that doesn’t cover what it means to call them that in context.

Astraea is a loaded word.

In a scientific sense, it’s a term for a group of several species with certain common traits: their bodies and minds are powered by a star-like fusion reaction, generally positioned as a pool of light in the head; they take in atmospheric gases through their bodies to sustain this reaction and will die if the reaction stops; they are colony dwelling and asexual, producing one reproductively capable “mother” for every several hundred sterile “maidens.”

These all evolved from a single ancestor species that lived in the vacuum of space, then at some point came down to the surfaces of planets--although they still live very much in harmony with space, and each of the now-biologically-diversified species (the blanket term covers hundreds, most of which have varied races and ethnicities within themselves) has its own spacefaring tradition dating back to ancient, if not prehistoric times.

This is the terminology they use for themselves--it’s distinct from their general terms for “person”/sentient being and bears no relation to the various words used for them by other civilizations in other galaxies. It’s come into common usage with their industrial revolution and the new intergalactic consciousness; as after all Andromeda is just one galaxy in the Local Group, and being that it’s home to the Local Group’s best builders and fliers of spaceships, the modern astraea identity is by necessity shippable anywhere. 

The translation--”star-maiden”--is conveniently straightforward to outsiders, particularly the binary-gendered civilizations they do business with, who perceive them as all-feminine. For them, “feminine” is a default that all other expressions, aesthetics, and roles exist within--it’s not quite accurate to say they have no concept of gender, because from an outside perspective, they DO have a concept that maps onto all other societies they encounter. Just as an earthling would perceive them as woman-like, they would perceive us as products of the inherent, matrilineal “universal femininity”--mothers, and those born from them that are just off from their mothers’ model.1

In addition to pulling the weight of this cultural framework, the word astraea serves a political purpose, at once strategically unifying and dividing: it connotes beings fitting the scientific and literal definitions while also being of a certain in-group; respectable, sober, Gravity-fearing Good Daughters to their colonies and their motherworlds. Clones are not in the in-group, ostensibly because they’re not born but made and supposed to only be for certain positions in life, but effectively to imply that they cannot be those things. Those from outside the inner dome of the galaxy (where the dominant culture’s dominance is most total) can be, but only if they fall in line. Obviously, carbon-based beings such as those that come from the milky way are also not in the in-group--which is a source of political identity for Andromedans--but there are clear justifications for sympathizing and cooperating with them. Unfortunately the most popular one is that doing so benefits the Andromedan ruling classes, who conspire with the equally-powerful patriarchies of our galaxy to generally monopolize, commodify, and homogenize the hell out of the supercluster.

All these various traits with all their varyingly negative and positive effects on the cosmos at large unite the diverse humanoids of Andromeda under a single banner, for better or for worse. The common identity is a weapon that can be wielded for multiple motives. It can enforce conformity, yet it can inspire collective action, especially as it’s increasingly claimed by those it was historically denied or applied dubiously to.

1This perception isn’t something they’re particularly trying to force on organic species--in fact they rarely try to force anything on organic species themselves, preferring instead to back up the also-organic Cadrian and Zephrian civilizations and be paid handsomely for it. Rather it’s a perception that they bring with them as a result of their own social context.
