United against this sickening trade, concerned citizens and organisations around the world urged the EU and US to back the ban, after neither supported the initial vote. Although the US still chose, shamefully, not to support the ban, the EU did so subject to an amendment that the export of elephants outside their natural range be permitted if it could be shown to help conservation of wild populations. This would require the agreement of the CITES Animal Committee, and also thankfully involve consultation with the IUCN African Elephant Specialist Group who have already indicated there is no conservation benefit in doing so. . For the next 6 months, up to 227 whales will be killed, including bryde's whales, minke whales and sei whales. Japan no longer part of the International Whaling Commission (IWC), hunters will kill whales not in international waters, but within 200 nautical miles of the country’s coast. Despite a huge decline in Japan’s consumption of whale meat over the past 50+ years, the Fisheries Agency has reportedly allocated around $463 million to support whaling this year. Colorado joins New Jersey, Hawaii, and California with bans. Our thanks to the bill sponsors, Senators Ginal and Zenzinger, and Representatives Duran and Froelich, ADI local supporters, Colorado Voters for Animals, and Animal-Free Circus Colorado in getting this legislation passed. Disappointingly, a late amendment which ADI opposed, exempts county fairs. We will be asking supporters to write to county fair boards to ask them not to book animal circuses. The only way to end the suffering of wild animals in circuses in every state, and avoid potential loopholes is the federal bill the Traveling Exotic Animal and Public Safety Protection Act (TEAPSPA). Authors of a recent study are warning that in order to avoid loss of #seaice, we need to “aggressively” reduce greenhouse gas rise. Without action, the study describes the explicit costs to #polarbears. Polar bears need sea ice to catch seals, therefore the continued rise in #globalwarming and reduction in sea ice is expected to lead to the bears’ decline, across their range. Published in Nature Climate Change, the study reviewed data on polar bear food sources and space needs between 1979 and 2016. It concluded that high levels of #greenhousegases in the atmosphere will lead to “steeply declining reproduction and survival”, with only small numbers of bears remaining by 2100. #Animalagriculture emits 14.5% of human-induced greenhouse gas emissions, more than the transportation sector, and is responsible for 44% of methane emissions. ARCTIC OCEAN CHANGING SO FAST, SCIENTISTS CAN BARELY KEEP UP. Canadian federal scientists and Inuit observers have reported that the #Canada basin in the #ArcticOcean is in a state of flux, affecting ocean currents, habits and the types of animals living there. Due to #climatechange and #humanactivity, the basin is altering so fast that scientists haven’t had time to identify the species living in the basin and how they’re being impacted. Compared to 2003, the basin is 33% less salty and around 30% more acidic, which can dissolve the shells of small mollusks. Increased Arctic shipping is also disruptive to animals like #seals and #whales, the noise masking sounds they use to communicate. We may not always know it, but the everyday choices we make can help or harm our planet. Effectively, a green light for US hunters to import trophies. Trophy hunting destroys genetic diversity and social structures of #wild populations and is unquestionably detrimental to species survival.
