John K. King Used and Rare Books

I had a wonderful walk today on this beautiful 55 degree afternoon!
I hopped off the Fort/Cass People Mover and made my way over to Lafayette Street to visit John K. King Books, one of my favorite places to spend a few hours. The largest bookstore in Michigan, John K. King features four levels of books to peruse; you'll find everything from the classics to art, film, spirituality, and even artwork.
After leaving the store, I walked down Lafayette and enjoyed some of Desiree Kelly's vibrant pieces, one of my favorite artists in Detroit.

Animal Farm: A Cautionary Tale of Revolution and Subjugation
Here's a book review: Animal Farm: A Cautionary Tale of Revolution and Subjugation.
Is there really freedom from tyranny? an article by Puja Goyal “The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.“ – Animal Farm, by George Orwell. In George Orwell’s allegorical masterpiece, Animal Farm, the depiction of the demise of human conduct and the subsequent rise of non-human species…

Finding Freedom in Speaking Up
August 3, 2023
Today is another workday, but I feel more energetic since I rested yesterday when I was out sick, even though I wasn't that sick, haha. As soon as I got out of bed, I knew the first task I'd work on. After breakfast and getting ready, I started on that specific task, and I must say, my motivation is coming back, all thanks to Doc. Margie's Management plan.
Delegating tasks is easier now, and I have fewer worries. The only major trigger at work today is my OC tendencies. During a call, a colleague's screen presentation wasn't perfectly aligned, and it bothered me. I wanted to request control of his screen to align the codes. It might sound funny, but I scored high on an OCD test. I shared this with a close friend at the office who knows I'm undergoing psychotherapy. She cracked a joke about it, and we laughed together. Surprisingly, voicing it out helped me; the urge to align his codes faded away, and I let it slide.
Our management team faces various challenges: projects closing soon, overworked staff, utilization, and revenue targets. I can feel the stress and pressure, but voicing out my feelings helps release some of the tension and makes it feel shared within the management. Today, I opened up to all the managers about how stressed and pressured I feel. Since I'm not usually open about my feelings, they were surprised and appreciated my honesty.
I'm also stepping out of my comfort zone by inviting a friend I haven't seen in a while to our house, so we can get ready together and attend a wedding. I'm anxious about our interaction, but I'll embrace being more sociable and just go with the flow. Who knows, it might not be awkward, and we could enjoy catching up while dressing up.
Positive Talk:
- Let your worries be heard; a little voice goes a long way!
- Don't keep everything inside; there are caring ears waiting to listen.
- You're not forever stuck with those quirks; they're just for now, and they can totally get better! 😉
- No need to force the talk; let it flow naturally like a sweet melody.
- Inhale, exhale - all will be A-okay! 💕

There are instances when you read a random book and find it really appealing to your senses,  but for the moment you can't clearly fathom the source of the delight, and you ponder over it casually for a while, and suddenly you are like "hell yeah this was the reason, this is what I was waiting for, this is the type of book that interests me". To realise one's taste in reading, as any other self-reflections, is truly a matter of joy. And this is truly quite a great milestone (or a stepping stone, I'm not sure) in his reading career. In a world where there are millions of books and writers, and countless genres, and a reader who is vexed by the idea of what utilitarian choice he can make, it's truly relaxing to finally fix on one and be able to discriminate among the possibilities and confidently venture into what he chose. 1984 is one such book that helped me in finding my type. With its ominous, dystopian setting, compelling characters and its bold use of various tropes and elements to intensify the plot, such as the Thought police, Telescreens, Newspeak and the different ironical ministries, the book was dissecting the performance and propaganda of totalitarian regimes (no wonder why it got banned once). Such a presentation of brutal historical facts through fictional and symbolic means was unprecedented in my readings until then. My fondness for the book brought me to the realisation that books with a political understructure and those concerning the ideas like power, ideology, identity and the sorts are of my interest. I need my mind to be disturbed than relaxed. I need to delve deep into the harsh realities that those in power, the Big brothers and their bureaucrats, make the fellow citizens to go through, their oppressions, interpellations, the propaganda, and all the sorts of force the state brings to 'discipline' its subjects. What makes 1984 the best of its kind, apart from its subject matter, is the way it emphasises its political and ideological thrusts through its careful introduction of linguistics, sexual, corporeal and psychological elements into the plot. #georgeorwell #1984 #animalfarm #bookstagram #book #writing #october #darkacademia #reading https://www.instagram.com/p/CjU61xNB5HK/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The pig’s blood
By Julieta Calil and Valetina Milano
Synopsis: What if the pig’s blood thrown at Carrie in her prom, from Stephen King’s novel, was Napoleon’s and Squealer’s? Carrie’s school mates would have trespassed Animal Farm and killed the drunk Napoleon and Squealer as he was the first pig spotted. They would have collected his blood, put it in a bucket, hung it at the ceiling above the stage, where Carrie was supposed to be crowned, and dropped it with a rope, sparking her to kill almost everyone on the scene. After the pigs’ bodies had been found, Benjamin and Clover would start a rebellion.
It was a chilly night in May, 1976, in a little town in Maine, called Chamberlain. An old  '61 Biscayne drove up a treacherous road, driven by Billy Nolan, the leader of a teenage gang in the town, wearing a black motorcycle jacket and pegged jeans and greasy hair. The car carried his friends, Jackie Talbot, Henry Blake, Steve Deighan, and the Garson brothers, Kenny and Lou, who squeezed in the worn out leather seats.
“Are you sure Animal Farm is the best for us to go to? I have heard awful stories about this farm’s animals'' - Kenny Garson mumbled.
“What? You can’t actually believe those, how would animals take over a farm?” - Billy asked with an annoyed face.
“Well, from what I have heard, they even trade with other farms” - Henry said as they made a turn, now facing Animal Farm.
The smell of fresh earth grew heavy as they entered the farm. Billy stopped the car and the six boys jumped out of it. They opened the trunk and pulled out a machete and two tin buckets.
“Look! I think I see two pigs lying there” - Steve whispered.
“Wait, are they wearing suits?” - Talbot asked in disbelief, as the gang walked closer to it.
“That’s crazy, they really are!” - A stunned Lou Garson said.
“Let’s just do it already!” - Billy said impatiently.
Without a second thought, he swung down the machete on one of the pig’s throat, smiling maniacally as he did so, while the other boys either watched in shock or deviated their looks.
“Quick! The bucket!” - Billy said, pulling it from Lou Garson’s hands, and placing it where the gushing blood fell.
Billy urged someone to kill the other pig, but none of the boys volunteered and so, he swung the machete a second time. After filling both buckets, they drove off in the Biscayne.
---
The pigs who lay in front of the house in the farm, were called Napoleon and Squealer, the first being who ran Animal Farm, or, as it appeared to be now, actually The Manor Farm. They had had a very agitated night, with a lot of drinking and gambling with the other pigs on the farm and men from surrounding farms, who had either gone to sleep in their rooms or went back to their houses. Napoleon and Squealer were tipsily singing the farm’s new anthem on the porch, when the first tripped and, too drunk to get up, fell asleep right there. Squealer, tired, followed suit and lay on the wooden floor.
They didn’t even wake up when the blade cut through their throats. They were both sleeping like rocks and it all happened too quick.
Early in the morning after the murder, the dogs woke up and sniffed around, looking for Napoleon. Soon, they found him and Squealer and let out a cry. Two of them went to tell the other pigs and three others went sniffing around the farm, trying to find the guilty of the murders.
The dogs sensed men’s smell, but couldn’t trace it after the driveway. When the other pigs heard the news, they didn’t take long to run off, afraid of encountering a similar fate. Where to? Nobody knew.
All the animals were shocked to find out what had happened. Most broke up in despair and couldn’t wrap their heads around the murders. They were scared and felt lost. What would they do with no pigs to guide them?
---
Chris Hargensen was delighted to hear from Billy, her boyfriend, that the plan had worked out. She was very mad with Carrie, who was the reason she couldn’t attend the Spring Prom.
“Pig blood for a pig. That’s great.” - Chris said, smiling just like Billy had when killing the pigs.
They hung the buckets above the stage when no one was looking, switched student’s ballots to vote for Carrie and Tommy for prom queen and king and left. The couple rented a room in The Cavalier, a little tavern close to the Ewen High School.
About that, Carrie dressed herself with a red dress she sewed herself. Her mother had seen her trying it earlier and urged her to take it off and burn, because, according to her, it was sinful.
Carrie, then, waited anxiously in the living room, fearing it was all a big joke. Why would Tommy Ross, one of the most popular guys of Ewen High School, who dated Sue Snell, one of the most popular girls, would ask her, the ugly freak, to the prom? She had, of course, pondered about it many times after the invitation.
But then, she heard the doorbell. And there he was, Tommy Ross in flesh and bone, standing in front of her. They stared at each other for a while. Finally, not knowing what to say, Carrie asked:
“Do you like it?”
"You look beautiful" - Tommy said sincerely.
When they got to the school, Carrie felt tense, but, after a while loosened up. People were being nice to her. She was actually feeling happy. They passed around ballots for the students to vote for the prom’s king and queen, and Tommy and Carrie voted for themselves. Carrie knew they wouldn’t win. While everyone liked Tommy, no one liked her.
But then, she heard her and Tommy’s names be called. They were prom queen and king. She couldn’t believe it, while she was pulled to the stage by Tommy. She cracked a big smile in front of the microphone, still in shock.
But the happiness didn’t last and Carrie was soon covered in pig’s blood. Tommy collapsed dead on the floor, after being hit in the head by one of the buckets. She took a while to process what had happened. She saw the students start laughing and pointing at her and started crying. She felt stupid, she should have known. She got furious. And then, she felt out of control.
The hose sprayed water at the microphone and people were electrocuted. The doors of the gymnasium shut. And soon, everything was on fire.
---
The Manor Farm turned back again to Animal Farm. The barn had been painted over and the Manor house had been shut. Just after the initial shock had settled, the animals went back to working, not knowing what else to do.
They soon found out that they didn’t have to work as much as they used to when the pigs were in charge, while still being able to produce enough food for them all. Actually - more than enough. They started working only three days a week, with only six hours of efficient work a day. The animals were well rested, fed and happy.
It seemed like the start of the revolution, only but better. They went back to singing the Beasts of England, chanting it loudly and happily before and after work and in mornings and nights of their days of rest.
---
Few survived that awful night in the Ewen High School. Carrie was not between them. Sue Snell turned out to be the only alive witness of the events of the Spring Prom, which became known all over the world.

What if Animal Farm was tweeted by Mollie?
Guido Estefano
Theo Forlani
Synopsis
What if the whole story of the animal farm was told from the perspective of Mollie, a shy mare, who's afraid of the other animal's judgment? Would people actually like her ideas and comments about what was happening in the story that she shared on her Twitter account? Yes, she knew how to use the internet from the beggining.

~Meet the Pigs Series~ Meet Midnight! I absolutely love this photo I got. He is really hard to get pictures of being solid black and I finally got him with some detail! He is Timber's half brother from the same litter. You might think, "How is that possible?" His mom Amaretto had 8 piglets, 7 of them had one dad Kenny who was a Tuahuru and little Midnight had a completely different dad who was named Believe the Hype and was a Tutaki! We DNA test all piglets and this how we know "who the daddy" is. If you have been following all my posts. I started the Meet the Pigs Series at the start of February and today you have officially met all 24 of our pigs! To recap, we have 8 boars covering 7 bloodlines and 14 breeding females covering 10 bloodlines and 2 house pigs, Ripley and Riley, who are both spayed. Thank you so much for following along! . . . . . . #mixedfarming #raisingpigs #kunekunepigsofinstagram #smallfarming #farmadventures #homesteadingskills #kunekunepig #rarebreeds #kunekunepigs #pigsofinsta #farmlifeisthebestlife #happypig #homesteaders #farmsofinstagram #smallfarms #kunekune #farmphotography #localfarmers #animalfarm #piglife #lifeonthefarm #pigstagram #piglets #homesteadlife #smallfarm #rarebreed #farminglife #farmerlife #farms #pigsofinstagram (at Halbert Farm Kunekune Pigs) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp-vKsNOC8Z/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
