Danus Plexippus, the North American Monarch Butterfly. We see them constantly here in farm country Delmarva as they migrate south. These Lepidoptera advertise their unpalatable taste to predators with their bold orange and black coloring. * Starting in 1952, Citizen Scientists started tagging and tracking Monarch butterflies through their phenomenal migration. In 1975, this work led to the discovery of their Wintering ground in central Mexico. The Monarchs we are seeing now are the FOURTH generation born in 2018 and are heading up to 2750 miles (as far as from Canada) to Mexico. Let that sit a little with you - The ones flying south now are the great grandchildren of ones that flew north from Mexico last spring. There is a Monarch Monitoring Project based in Cape May, NJ - near here, that tracks their numbers as they migrate down the East Coast, a few stop in Virginia Beach for the winter, some stay in Florida, but many fly along the Gulf of Mexico into the central mountains of Mexico. * Each time I see one winging its way across the sky it makes me happy. Something so delicate, so tiny, on such a bold adventure. It gives me hope.
