Animating the World: Doodle Mango's Creative Journey
Why use animation instead of real-time video? Here are a few reasons:
Control: With animation, you have complete control over every aspect of your video, resulting in a more polished and professional final product that perfectly matches your brand.
Flexibility: Animation allows you to visualize concepts and ideas that may be difficult or impossible to capture on film, so you can create anything you can imagine.
Cost-effective: Animation offers a more cost-effective alternative that can deliver even better results. Plus, animated content can often be repurposed and used across multiple channels and platforms.
Consistency: Animated content can help build a stronger brand identity

Martin did an interview about the Our Blue and Green World and I found some pretty neat stuff worth discussing.

MORE PROOF THAT CHRIS DOES INDEED GET COLD EASILY!!! (or at least gets cold easier than Martin)
Tumblr media
These are pretty neat references not gonna lie. Even if I didn't notice it the first time.

The change of pace for Wild Kratts does slightly concern me but at least according to Martin, Wild Kratts isn't ending anytime soon, yay! I wonder what's in store

Did Nobuhiro Watsuki say Aoshi and Misao get together? [Rurouni Kenshin]
kaorou999@youtube: actually, i heard that mr watsuki (the creator of samurai x) said in an interview that Aoshi and Misao do get together, im glad for that!!!
Chrno34@youtube: Yup, at the San Diego Comic Con of '06, a fan asked him if Misao and Aoshi got married and confirmed it.
Summoner [email protected]: Btw, all the Aoshi/Misao stuff comes from the fact I asked Watsuki at the 2006 Comic Con if they get married, Source: http://ladysarah92.blogspot.com/2009/11/
In Comic-con 2006 Nobuhiro Watsuki was a guest and was interviewed - As for Watsuki, he answered a wide range of questions. He talked about his inspirations and what made his decision to become a manga creator easier, such as a childhood appreciation of Doraemon and his apprenticeship with the manga creator Takeshi Obata, best known in the US for his work on the title Death Note. When pressed for his favorite character, besides the obvious selection of Kenshin himself, Shishio was a close second. People kept on wanting to talk about the anime, especially Watsuki’s involvement in it, not only of the Rurouni Kenshin series but the one of his most recent series Buso Renkin that has yet to be shown on Japanese television. They did have a clip of it there and showed it. Regarding his involvement with the anime, he checks the scripts and the character designs, and is involved with the selection of the voice actors. “I remember when my daughter was going through it,” recalls Bill Motz, a long-time Disney animation writer who has worked on shows like Kim Possible, Phineas and Ferb, and Big Hero 6: The Series. “And the timing is all different. You have friends who are blossoming way early, and other ones who look eternally 10-years-old. I remember with my daughter, her friends would suddenly sprout up and be twice as tall, and she always felt like she was left behind in some respects. When you are impacted by puberty, or when you finally get your period, all those things, it's a big life change, and it can really change the dynamics between your friendships and even how you relate with your family.”
So, when Motz and friend Bob Roth – another veteran Disney animation writer and producer – were first planning to approach Disney about incorporating a whole episode on periods in their series The Ghost and Molly McGee’s second season, the two co-creators were, understandably, nervous.
“We were all prepared to go to war,” says Roth. “But Disney was supportive from the moment they first heard the idea. We've seen a real shift over the course of our careers about the kinds of topics we can discuss and incorporate into the show. And I'm so grateful for that, because it makes the storytelling that much more fun and authentic and real.”
“We're delighted that we actually get to have this kind of conversation [on the show] and a little surprised that it hasn't been a bigger topic sooner,” notes Motz. “This is a key part of the human experience. And a lot of Pete's journey is in that episode, which is very reflective of my own. After all, our wish was for this to be a show for families. And we hoped that families could see themselves in it.”
“It's an opportunity for dialogue,” says Motz. “It's a way to initiate conversation. Parents always wonder when they're going to have certain talks with their kids about certain things and it seems so awkward and inorganic in how you try to bring it up. But if you have something that you could watch together and react to together, it makes it easier.”
Roth adds, “We’re the modern day, ‘How to talk to your kids,’ guide. Let's not pack these things away into the corner and pretend they don't exist.”
About the episode ¨Period Piece¨ tackling periods. Respect for the creators and the team for including these topics in the show.

Adventure Time: Making Filler Meaningful
For contractual reasons this post has to be anime related so to comply with that:
“Adventure time is a very anime inspired cartoon, even the creator has said some of his inspirations are My Neighbor Totoro and Akira” [https://www.awn.com/animationworld/time-some-adventure-pendleton-ward ].
*Also filler is a common problem in anime so that topic is related too.
With all of the above said i'm going to talk about my objective here; When I watched adventure time complete for the first time something that I loved about the series was that the ability to retcon things seamlessly, stuff that hadn’t a purpose before now have an in-lore reason to be, like the fact Finn uses a bunny hat was just a design choice for the character but later was established that humans used animal hats like those to protect their necks from vampires, or things like one of the most powerful characters that appeared (even recently in the sequel Fionna & Cake) is GOLBetty, whom you can trace the origin to al episode of season 1, where plot of that episode is just about how Finn becomes a giant foot and struggles in that form. The series always finds ways to take throwaway jokes from 3 seasons ago and converts them on useful lore pieces, making them some kind of “retroactive foreshadowing”, so I got the idea to make a little experiment, I'm going to watch some Adventure Time filler episodes and then i'm going to say why they are important, worth watching or at least how they are interesting in the context of the whole series.
  Here are my ground rules:
-Im just going to watch episodes from season 1 to have a reasonable scope
-I'm going to watch it on Netflix because it's easier for me at the moment, it shouldn’t affect anything but sometimes the platform uses different season orders (I think it uses production order instead of release order) so maybe some episodes are out of order or have different numeration from what you can find in other places, just refer to the episode name in that case.
-To define whats filler and what isn’t I’m using this community curated list [https://gist.github.com/CharlieScarver/ef5d6f43a7c3b63ec1cc4dbce66f5579] I'm going to watch every S1 episode that's it’s not mentioned here, so I'm not watching the episodes marked as “interesting filler” (but the fact that category exists kinda proves my point already)
-I'm going to comment what I think it's valuable from the episode based on my own memory of the series and then I'm going to use the Wiki to see if I can provide some additional detail.
-Im not going to explain the plot of the episode, just the things I think are interesting.
-Im assuming you know the main characters.
Last considerations: There are going to be spoilers of course and also I know filler in cartoons and filler in anime are different, cause anime seasons are shorter and more story driven while cartoons like adventure time just exists for a while before they become episodic. I think I had to acknowledge that, maybe it's a little weird to call the first episode filler, but I don't think it changes any of my points.
Episode 1, Slumber Party Panic: The first scene explains a lot of the world doing very little; there are candy people, there is a kingdom, and the princess is very intelligent and does science, now she is trying to revive people (they become zombies). Basically establishes we are looking at a weird mix of medieval/fantasy society and some touches of science fiction, also zombies are a recurrent thing during the series and they are a good representation of the apocalyptic themes that are also present.
The episode also shows us the personality of the Princes Bubblegum (PB), where she lies when she thinks is better for their citizens, Finn realizes that PB maybe isn't the best person in the world very late in the series but we see that from the first episode.
As a bonus Jake and Lady Rainicorn aren't a couple yet, but they are a little flirty. After Finn sends them to play seven minutes in heaven they are quite happy together.
Episode 4, The Jiggler: I think the whole point of this episode was to make a musical episode, this is the first time we see Finn sing, but it is a constant and a staple of the series later, also (this is going to be the BIGGEST SPOILER POSSIBLE HERE for almost no reason) literally on the last episode the biggest villain is defeated with everyone singing a song, so music shouldn’t be underestimated.
Episode 6, Tree Trunks: She appeared as a background character before but this is the debut episode of Tree Trunks, she is a very beloved character and has so much importance in the story that I can't mention all of the things she has made, but just as an example she becomes the adoptive mother of the baby reincarnation of the Lich, one of the most evil and powerful villains of the series. This is just the perfect episode to learn about her.
As an additional, a direct quote from the Wiki: “At the beginning of the episode Finn makes the statement of “I’d catch a shooting star and travel to outer space and fight space monsters,” when asked by Tree Trunks what he would do if he could do anything. This is heavily reminiscent of the events of the episode “The Comet” in season 6, episode 4.”
This is a throwaway line that literally foreshadows the season 6 finale.
Episode 11, Wizard: We already have seen some magical things, but here we see some rules of the magic system of the world, the most important thing is that apparently anyone can learn how to do magic or at least you can be very easily bestowed magic, in one side that means that magic users in general aren’t a threat just because they know magic, but in the other hand it means anyone can be a powerful wizard even if no one expects it.
To be honest I didn’t remember this episode that much, but it's very fun and I has my favorite example of “Retroactive Foreshadowing”, because for some of context Finn losing his arm its written in his destiny (one of his pasts lives had her arm taken away, Farmworld Finn has a mechanical prosthesis and when Finn goes to pillow world his arm is replaced to) so I dont think its a coincidence that Finn casts a spell called “Vorpal Hand” that transforms his arm into a sword just like the Grass Sword does in the future (*The Grass Sword arc eventually converges into the Akira reference lol).
Episode 13, City of Thieves: For this episode I don't think the is much to connect to the future but its really good, but also I think you could do a parallel with the final episode, where Finn is in a situation where it seems impossible to move forward without making some morally dubious thing but he still tries cause he is really pure of heart.
Episode 14, Witch Garden: The most important thing here is the first time we are told that Jake got his powers from somewhere else and it's not normal for dogs like him to be magical. Here we are told Jake got the powers from magical mud, but later on the series we discover the powers come from Jake’s alien ascendance.
Episode 17, When Wedding Bells Thaw: Not the first, but one of the first appearances of Ice King, a full episode dedicated to him and even thought he brainwashed a princess in this episode, this is the first time we see a friendly approach from Ice King to Finn and Jake, hanging out, talking about his insecurities, even being nervous about the wedding he arranged, this is the first glance of humanity behind Ice King’s persona and perhaps there is more than just an incompetent villain. By now I’m so accustomed to the Simon version of Ice King that seen him in this form makes me a little sad, in this episode there's a glance of hope
Episode 19, The Duke: I have to admit this episode is kinda mid, but it shows to us the relation PB has with other kingdoms. Even though here PB hates the Duke, he is seen as an ally to her in the final episode of the series.
Also in this episode appears one of the two recurrent Squirrel secondary characters, which is a little weird thing to say even for adventure time, but whatever. I’d have to nickles…
Episode 20, Donny: This the first episode where BMO talks, and they is the best character so that's a pretty good reason to watch it, but this is also the second minor mention of the Cosmic Owl, stating for the first time its connection with destiny and it works very well to establish him as a know creature of the world before the episode where he is an important plot point, that makes the world more believable in my opinion.
Here the Why-wolves use the word “Egress” which is a little recurrent joke of the series.
Episode 22, Dungeon: This episode centers on the relation of Finn & Jake as adventurers, it explores how Finn could survive a dungeon without Jake, here that is just an idea and has to be with Finn’s pride more than anything, but in the future Jake is going to die before Finn and how he confronts the world without his best friend its a genuine concern that's explored many times; in the main series, in the distant lands spin-off and even in Fiona & Cake

Kind habits invite us to pay attention and carry out small actions that, even though they may seem imperceptible, have the power to generate a significant impact on our environment and the people around us. A warm hug, a sincere greeting, a gesture of gratitude, or simply putting ourselves in someone else's shoes to understand their perspective, strengthen human bonds and cultivate our empathy. Every choice we make has repercussions beyond ourselves. Our actions affect the world and those around us. Recognizing this interdependence drives us to act with responsibility and awareness. Thus, with each kind habit we cultivate, we weave the magic of transformation and leave a footprint that cares for and protects our planet. Small actions, big changes!

Forefront Post 7 |The Windshield Wiper 2022
youtube
The Windshield Wiper is a very personal and particular vision of Love and relationships. Presented by Pastel and crafted by the talented Alberto Mielgo, this work showcases his distinct vision as a writer, director, and designer. Produced by Pinkman. tv and Leo Sanchez Studio, it stands as a testament to Mielgo's matured creative direction
Alberto Mielgo is a very mature director who has worked on many notable productions including Harry Potter, Love and Death Robot and Spider-Man. This work was before 2023's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, but it can be seen in this trailer that this short film influenced much of his subsequent work in superhero films. Over time, he has developed a unique personal style that has been used successfully.
The film is a multi-dimensional digital animation that reflects Mielgo's creativity to go beyond the limitations of a single production tool. The film uses a combination of painted backgrounds and a harmonious mix of 2D and 3D elements to achieve a visual synergy between the modern and the retro. Notably, Mielgo employs certain shots that mimic live-action cinematography techniques, capturing the natural way in which a scene shakes and moves.
In contrast to creators who aim for surrealistic narratives and novel cinematic languages, Mirgo prefers the design of real scenes. This tendency may be attributed to his early experience in filmmaking. However, he boldly uses unconventional camera angles to effectively convey the emotional flow of his narrative. In addition, this work abandons a linear narrative approach in favour of a multifaceted narrative that writes multiple perspectives together. Rather than a single, overarching plot thread, it resembles an essay exploring perspectives, similar to an academic exploration of the multi-faceted nature of love.
Mielgo is an established director, full of experience and insights to offer. Whether it's production techniques, visual language or multi-dimensional storytelling, his work provides invaluable learning opportunities. I recognise my limitations as a writer and producer of experimental animation, and I greatly appreciate Mielgo's exceptional visual expression and storytelling. While my current project tends towards narrative-driven content, I've had challenges with script development and transitioning to polished storyboards. As a result, I am more able to learn and appreciate more from this film.

Practice 1: Update 11
Today was the day for the Police station illustration of the montage video in the practice 1, memory and nostalgia.
The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse NoneMore Productions, Bad Robot Productions, Apple Original Films This is recently released animated short film by Charlie Mackesy, Peter Baynton. Based on the lovely illustrated book by Charlie Mackesy. The book is international bestseller and conveyed great thoughts to world. This movie just released this December and runs only 34 minutes. The Author of the book, Charlie Mackesy tried to give a feel good qualities like compassion and hope through his illustrations. For animating the story they treated animation also in the same way like the drawings. This movie gives great insights on simple living, greatness in small things. story tells about a lost kid, a rat who loves the cakes, a haunted, vigilant fox and a strong horse. This sketching like strokes giving characters lot of flow and beauty of traditional 2D animation. The easy flowing high quality animated film impressed me a lot very recently. I’m more into compositing and this film has well executed its frame compositions and lot of references are there.

Visual Development & Style Considerations
As this was all about light and dark I focused on tone as a key charactersitic of my characters.
The Batman background reference I had previously discussed and its relevance to painting. This gave me the idea to revisit some Rembrandt paintings, the one below gave me some useful ideas.
Tumblr media
The key idea I started to think about was the way shadows create a blur and how this lack of clarity is important as it is accurate to the real world. In the dark, our eyes cannot see detail, so everything begins to blur and colours mix as definition is lost. The more contrast there is, the more detail should disappear and the subject is lost in the background.
I also started to research lighting techniques and used this tutorial which explains how to break down characters into basic shapes to effectively add lighting to them
youtube
With a new understanding of lighting principles I began to sketch out my character, I wanted to use greys for my character and background as I watched the movie Frozen and thought the Trolls palette would work well for my cavemen
Tumblr media
and I wanted my cavemen to be beefy so I refereanced Wreck-It Ralph and Baymax from Big Hero 6, especially this early drawing of the character by Shiyoon Kim
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
I wanted the expressiveness of Scooby Doo, Homer Simpson and the characters in Edd Ed n Eddy so started with the face with the previous referances in mind, to help me come up with some possible character differences I used the 7 Dwarfs names for inspiration but very loosely.
I developed the idea of having my characters hyperventilate as seen on the right of the drawing, as well as coming up with a new idea of having the characters hair burn off from fire and transition into a modern human. This took a lot of inspiration from sexy Squidward from Spongebob.
From this point I was happy with my characters faces and ability to express goofy emotions and emit confused grunts so I moved on to the full body shots.
I sketched out a rough character with a similar body type to Ralph and Baymax and used sculptures of Neanderthals as a reference, as I had a pretty good idea of what I hoped to create, I found this was a pretty smooth process.
Tumblr media
As you can see I started with the rough sketch, broke it down into simple shapes and then started to colour it. I like this character design a lot. The palette of blues with a harsh red light against a background of noise worked the way I had hoped (although I didn't light the character very realistically...). Hopefully the lighting, grain density and overall contrast between character and background can change dynamically when I get to animating, but for the time being, I left this character here.

Love, Death & Robot: Volume 2 (2021) is an adult animated anthology series streaming on Netflix. It is created by Tim Miler, produced by Blur Studio and supervised by Jennifer Yuh Nelson. It consists of stand alone episodes that explore a variety of genres, including humour, horror, science fiction, and fantasy. These episodes are created by several animation studios from various countries and each one contains a unique plot and animation. Each episode has a connection to the subjects covered in the title. But not every episode covers all three subjects.
Each episode can be considered a separate animated short film that differs from one another in terms of subject matter, visual style, and narrative elements. This animated series' collaborative creative process makes it innovative. Due to the collaborative efforts of numerous artists, different creative approaches and concepts are used to express the same theme in various stories. Each story is distinct and this type of creation is quite uncommon. This series demonstrates variety and diversity in terms of artistic mediums, artistic expressions, artistic narratives, aesthetics, and other features as every artist has a distinctive personal style. From the groundbreaking visuals, whether they be stylized so every frame is its own work of art or hyper-realistic like a PlayStation 5 cut scene to the short story-esque plots, some of which are actually adapted from famous science fiction literature.
Following the same theme that is Love, death and robots, this series show different people's perspectives and innovative approaches. Since the film deals with science fiction, it can be stated that the entire animated series has established a vast science fiction universe. The audience's imagination is expanded by the vast array of possibilities in this world. The reason for this is because every artist has a unique understanding. When diferent viewpoints are combined, the boundaries of science fiction are pushed and the audience is presented with a variety of made-up worlds, each of which has a unique sensory impact on them. According to Gutierrez (2021), each episode in Love, Death, & Robot influences how the reader sees the world. Its like looking at reality from different perspectives. I believe that this type of worldview presented from several perspectives has a unique impact when used in the collaborative creation mode.
The majority of animations have unique world views, and each of these world views is based on a certain world system. The fact that love death + robot is a diverse world system made by various artists is a benefit. Audiences are drawn in by this system, declaring it to be startling.
This collaborative work of different artists on the same theme therefore offers a very varied experience to the audiences. I believe it is worthwhile to investigate this creative mode as it is becoming quite popular among the audiences. The audience will experience a number of shocks, including thinking, perception, and aesthetics, all at once. In my future practice, I might think about creating different short stories with different artstyle following the same theme and see how well it goes.
