i have a point to make but i need to establish some things first:

Crunchyroll have a hand in producing anime. what this means is being on production committees, ie being the financier of anime and having a big part in planning the anime itself

Crunchyroll produces a lot of anime

a lot of what Crunchyroll produces are isekai anime

Crunchyroll's audience is strictly international. primarily the US, but it servers a global market

with all that said: the endemic overproduction of isekai anime is because of their international popularity. anime like SAO and Shield Hero were huge successes for Crunchyroll, which has led to them recreating their popularity time and time again. in the Japanese web novel subculture that originally spawned the modern isekai genre, people have been moving away from isekai for years, but anime has yet to reflect that because isekai is being prioritized for adaptation due to its international popularity

all this to say: isekai is not a domestic phenomena for Japan. it's plenty popular there, yes, but a foreign company is behind its overproduction, and with the goal of international release. thus, the topic of isekai is more complicated than people give it credit for, and can't be simplified into simply "Japanese people are perverts" like so many people want to do

Yeah I dunno, I just kind of disliked the pacing of this entire episode. It missed the mark for me at every step.

Maybe its just because I've spent so much time with the two chapters being adapted, but there's just some weight that is missing in almost every scene. The lingering dread and the dark humor and the hope that things will be okay. The hugging too tightly to someone you can't hold on to. The refusal to engage directly with the truth.

The educational bone assembly minigame isn't just for a goof its about how bodies are delicate and incredibly specific in what they do and how they do it. The awe of it. The arduous task of rebuilding that in every detail.

Naruto was basically my first anime fandom when I was in middle school, it's THE reason that I made several deeply meaningful connections that I still have to this day, and it was My Thing through several of my formative years. I fell out of love with WC for a long time around OotS and Naruto filled that gap. (along with Another notorious thing that was coming out around that time but the Other thing wasn't AS impactful to me as naruto)

Aaaaand I got deeply emotionally attached to Sakura in particular. I adored her, she was my girlie, I was a total Sakura Stan and I would defend her honor like a knight in SHINING armor.

You do not understand how personal that woman is to me. Sakura Stanning was a major part of my personality when I was but a 'paw.

And let me tell YOU, Nonnie, nothing teaches you what disappointment feels like quite like experiencing the ending of Naruto Shippuden as it happened. Kids these days are incapable of being so profoundly emotionally destroyed as I was, after spending years brawling the misogyny of the late aughts to early 2010s, only for Sakura to end up as a forlorn housewife cooing for a stupid bastard emo to glance in her general direction. I was laid low by the warriors of the ancient world and their like is NOT in the world today, and THEN I was BUT YOUNG AND TENDER, BUT NOW I AM STRONG, STRONG, STRONG.

To this DAY my friends know that We Don't Talk About Bruno around Bones, unless you want to trigger a 5 hour unskippable cutscene in which I lose my marbles screaming about how the ending of Naruto and the war arc broadly betrays every theme that Kishimoto established previously. EVEN NOW, you have NO idea how much strength it's taking me to just drop it. I can hear the Doom music behind my ears, banging like a war drum, awakening a sleeper agent.

I am now a loyal vassal of My Lady Bumble. Yet, on rare occasion, I feel the calloused touch of my old sweet, and I yearn to defend her honor. It would be a cruel thing to put me on the two sides of the war within my heart.

i don't think people really understand just how much anime is being made, year after year, and just how bad the industry as a whole has gotten, so i had the thought that i should pull some data and demonstrate the first three years of the 90s vs the first three years of the 20s. to that end:

1990: 224 1991: 227 1992: 264

most of the anime in these years was either continuous long-running series like Dragon Ball or Doraemon or OVAs and movies. at most, a dozen new shows might start each season, and it could be as few as two or three new shows at a time. this really isn't a lot when you consider the scale of the industry and what shortcuts these productions could take by being long-term projects

now, for some more recent numbers, in fall 2022, there were 252 different anime being released at once. once again, including movies, OVAs, etc. in a single season, as much anime was being made than in entire years in the early 90s. and consider, too, that these don't get the production shortcuts of yesteryear, as most of these anime begin and end in a single season. it's much harsher work and workers are being forced even harder than ever before. not only is more anime being made, season after season,, but it's more difficult to do so, as well

for 2022 as a whole, there were 767 anime being released. that's over 3x as much anime was released in 1990. and the worst part is, at the time in the early 90s, that much anime was already considered unsustainable by older animators and the like. for context, in 1975, there were 43 anime that released that year. obviously, the industry has grown since then, and it can certainly manage more than that, but the modern numbers are completely unsustainable
